Writer-director-actress Julie Davis is a mix of Bonnie Hunt and Jennifer Aniston. In her 2002 comedy Amy's O (also called Amy's Orgasm), Davis plays Amy Mandell, the bestselling self-help author of Why Love Doesn't Work, which is full of her theories on the fundamentally unstable nature of relationships--only she herself hasn't been in one in years. But when she's interviewed by an arrogant radio shock jock named Matthew Starr (Nick Chinlund), sparks fly, and Amy suddenly has to examine her theories in the real world. The title of Amy's O suggests a sex-centered story; in fact, what separates this movie from most romantic comedies is that it explores not only falling in love, but the hurdles of sustaining a relationship after the romance has peaked. The movie skirts sitcom territory, but has enough heart to give it merit. --Bret Fetzer

The much-loved novels of C.S. Forester come to life in Captain Horatio Hornblower, a solid, engrossing seafaring tale. Forester himself worked on the script for the 1951 film, which mines its plot from three Hornblower books. Set during the Napoleonic era, the movie kicks off by steering British captain Hornblower (Gregory Peck) into the middle of a nimble cat-and-mouse game with anti-Spanish rebels in the New World--only to find that in the months since he set sail from Old Blighty, national alliances have changed, causing a reversal in his original mission. The action later shifts to Europe, and throughout there is a love story involving a noblewoman (Virginia Mayo) who takes unexpected lodging aboard Hornblower's ship. The film has an intelligence that keeps it watchable, although it's definitely not one of the more buoyant films of the robust director Raoul Walsh. Perhaps the movie falls short of classic status because of the casting: its sober nature might stem from the personality of Gregory Peck, who looks marvelous but remains stolid throughout, while Virginia Mayo is, well, Virginia Mayo, a league away from British aristocracy. The sea battles don't have the technical dazzle of Master and Commander but they look acceptable for their time, and the movie's fondness for detail is gratifying. Forester's tales later became a series of British TV programs, with Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. --Robert Horton

Description

Screen legend Gregory Peck brings to life C.S. Forester's classic nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower. Hornblower battles the French and the Spanish forces during the Napoleonic wars, but also finds time for romance in this story from director Raoul Walsh.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-06-08

Captain Horatio Hornblower is an already older but still excellent movie.
Historicaly is this movie more correct than the Hornblower series.
It is also a movie that you can watch relaxed, without the sometimes -to fast-present-day camera vieuw changes that gives you a headache.
For their time the ships have been constructed very nice.

4 out of 5 stars movie review.......2007-05-26

Gregory Peck does a great job in projecting command authority as captain of a warship. Virginia Mayo is more than a pretty face. She is convincing as she falls in love with Peck and the movie's conclusion leaves you with a nice warm feeling. The battle scenes between the vintage ships were very well done. A good way to spend an evening.

5 out of 5 stars Good Portrayal of C. S. Foresters H. Hornblower.......2007-05-14

This motion picture captures the essence of three of Foresters books: "Beat to Quarters", "Ship of the Line", and "Flying Colours", though there are some inaccuracies and portions left out. This movie is about a time in the world when honor and integrity were paramount. If you like the A&E series on Hornblower, you will probably like this movie. Conversely, if you like this movie, you will probably like the A&E series as well.

5 out of 5 stars Long Wait.......2007-05-13

I've been waiting years for this to come out on dvd. Read all the books as a kid. Saw the movie years ago. Thanks and keep them comming.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent nautical adventure.......2007-05-09

One of the better sea-faring adventures to be found on DVD. Terrific color, some slam-bang sea battles, splendid cast and Virginia Mayo is stunning in some shots.
This film blends a couple of the classic Hornblower novels into a worthy film effort. And some of the best sounding cannon shots you will find on film.
Well worth buying and finally on DVD in all it's colorful glory. Go ahead, get some sea foam in your face. Enjoy.

After viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon. Sixtysome years later, the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film. The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of its recent hits. Disney's Tarzan doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa. What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music (the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters) and the remarkable animation. Deep Canvas, a 3-D technology, was developed for the film, creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees, often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs. The usual foray of sidekicks, including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie O'Donnell, should keep the little ones aptly entertained. The two lead voices, Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane, are inspired choices. Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points (the last third) and makes Tarzan's initial connection with all things human (including Jane) delicious entertainment. Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films, but as cookie-cutter entertainment, Tarzan makes a pretty good treat. (Ages 5 and up) --Doug Thomas

Description

Swing into action and adventure with Disney's original classic, TARZAN(R), packed with fun-filled bonus features and award-winning music such as the memorable "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Trashin' The Camp." Disney's magnificent animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's story of the ape man begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. Even though he is shunned as a "hairless wonder" by their leader, Tarzan is accepted by the gorillas and raised as one of their own. Together with his wisecracking ape buddy Terk and neurotic elephant pal Tantor, Tarzan learns how to "surf" and swing through the trees and survive in the animal kingdom. His "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he knows and loves with his gorilla family. Filled with humor, heart, and hilarious fun, TARZAN is an unforgettable adventure you'll watch again and again.~~TARZAN(R) Owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. And Used by Permission. 2 out of 5 stars Not quite funny, entertaining, or clever enough.......2007-06-05

Besides the opening and ending scenes, this movie is full of mediocre one-liners and wacky antics that just aren't funny enough to warrant an hour and a half of your life. That, along with the meaningless story line, leaves very little to redeem this movie. Don't waste your time unless this is your flavor of humor.

3 out of 5 stars Wishy Washy .......2007-05-28

I rated this as "wishy washy" because I would never recommend this movie to someone who I didn't know had an affinity for gratuitous humor. However, I would definitely show the first fifteen minutes to anyone who enjoys spoof hilarity. The first fifteen are probably the most hilarious I have ever viewed. Even my husband, who might be considered more prudish than myself, enjoyed the initial part of this movie. It is too bad they couldn't keep it up. Instead they filled the movie with such humor to be had in a bad Adam Sandler film or Reno 911.

However, it will play on pcs and laptops, so all is not lost.

A devastating investigation into the pedophilia scandals tearing apart the Catholic Church, Deliver Us From Evil begins by looking into one priest, Father Oliver O'Grady, who agreed to be interviewed by journalist/filmmaker Amy Berg. O'Grady's genial calm is at first ingratiating, until he begins to describe his crimes with an unsettling sociopathic detachment. But O'Grady's blithe interview is only half of the story, as the documentary also unveils how church superiors covered up O'Grady's crimes and shuffled him from diocese to diocese in northern California, finally placing him in an unsupervised position of authority in a small town, where he sexually assaulted dozens of children; the video deposition of Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahoney is a grotesque portrait in brittle denial. What makes Deliver Us From Evil crucial viewing, however, are the remarkable interviews with a few of the victims (now adults) and their parents, whose stories are wrenching and riveting. With the support of a priest seeking to reform the church, two of the victims actually go to the Pope, seeking some form of help in addressing O'Grady's crimes. This stunningly potent documentary combines raw feeling with lucid and persuasive discussions of the reasons for--and disturbing breadth of--this crisis within the Church. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

The true story of the most notorious pedophile priest in the modern history of the Catholic church.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where is Jesus in all this?.......2007-06-08

This film is harrowing and heartbreaking. O'Grady is a pure psychopath. His light, airy descriptions of the horrors he inflicted on dozens of children as young as nine months old is chilling. He is incapable of truly understanding that he has done anything wrong, instead tut-tutting the damage he wrought as merely "unfotunate events" or "tragic occurrences", somehow removed from himself.

The man is clearly damaged goods, broken and lacking in empathy: in short, a textbook psychopath, happy to be the centre of attention...

But O'Grady is not the real villain, as vile as he is. No, the real evil here is the Roman Catholic hierarchy and their lust for power and money who enable the destrcution of innocent children in the thousands. From John Paul II, through Joseph Ratzinger, formerly Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the current Pope, down to the execrable Cardinal Mahony, we see people who have the audacity to say they speak for God and follow Christ while knowingly allowing the rape of children to protect their worldly power.

The victims of the horror are shut out, ignored and belittled by a callous corporation whose executives presume to be spiritually superior while hiding behind lawyers.

The mindset of the world's first multinational corporation is illuminated by the courageous Father thomas Doyle who labours on behalf of the victims, but is unable even to get a letter from the victims past the Vatican guards.

Of course, no Chuch officials agree to be interviewed...

The documentary is a masterpiece. It is a gripping and maddening glimpse into the mind of a psychopath and a chilling illustration of Matthew 7:

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."

Our old pal George Bush shows up like a dirty shirt to comfort the comfortable and afflict the afflicted.

    Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Power and Money Corrupt (again).......2007-06-05

Apart from 10 minutes in which the filmmakers and the film's protagonist make a lame attempt to explain WHY priests are likely to sexually offend, this movie is brilliant and should be viewed by parents, church leaders of any faith, politicians, psychologists and law enforcement officials. In other words, just about everyone. It is yet another tale of power and money corrupting (supposedly) good men. Father O'Grady is a sick puppy who of course should be behind one set of bars or another (either jail or a mental ward of some sort), but his superiors who allowed him to continue his ways will, I think, someday occupy a special place in hell. Using the church, the business of saving souls, to attain power, and allowing children and families to be torn apart in order to reach that power, is nothing short of evil.

Those of us who call ourselves Catholics should all demand that Rome admit its mistakes, apologize to all victims and set a strict standard of turning all criminals within the church over to law enforcement officials. Hiding behind the church to allow criminals to prey on children can not be accepted.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacrifice of Father Thomas Doyle.......2007-06-04

Deliver Us From Evil portrays how the Catholic Church grossly mismanaged the crisis of pedophilia within its hierarchy. It depicts how the victims of Father Oliver O'Grady continued to suffer as a result of being sexual abused. The experiences of the Jyono family are particularly touching, especially when Bob, the father, confesses that he no longer believes in God because of the terrible things that happened to Ann, his daughter.

O'Grady was a very odd character. He seemed childish and naïve to believe that his victims would come to see him and perhaps forgive him. Quite surprisingly, he admitted that he was sexually abused as a child by a priest and by his older brother. Of course, this fact does not excuse what he did.

As the documentary reveals, Pope Benedict XVI led the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (formerly known as the Inquisition) from 1981 to 2005, and one of his duties was to protect children from being harmed by priests. Unfortunately, he did a very poor job, and numerous lawsuits have been brought against the Church as a result. He was "accused of conspiracy to cover up sexual abuse" in the US and was granted "immunity from prosecution" by President Bush.

The inability of Church officials to appropriately address this crisis remains bewildering. Some have suggested that their negligence was a consequence of fear as well as the culture of secrecy that exists among the clergy. Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating compared their attitude of silence and concealment to that of La Cosa Nostra. As Jason Berry and Gerald Renner note, "the great sin in ecclesiastical culture was to violate its ethos of secrecy. Cardinals take an oath to the pope to safeguard the church from scandal -- to prevent bad information from becoming public." The suggestion by Auxiliary Bishop James Quinn in 1990 that the Church hide the records of its sexual offenders in the Vatican embassy because it has diplomatic immunity did not help matters.

Father Thomas Doyle and two others wrote in 1985 a secret report for the bishops, warning of a national scandal if sound policy was not adopted to handle the problem of sexual abuse. They predicted that the Church would face "extremely serious financial consequences" and "significant injury" to its image and estimated that "total projected losses for the decade" might reach $1 billion. Moreover, they warned that "in this sophisticated society, a media policy of silence implies either necessary secrecy or cover up."

Contrary to the 1985 report, the bishops declined to establish a national crisis intervention team. Naturally, the problems the Church deferred still haunt it today. Given its stringent moral code, the Church was regarded by a growing number of people as hypocritical and negligent because it allowed its clerics to physically and mentally abuse its followers.

Yet the most depressing aspect of Deliver Us From Evil is the sacrifice of Father Doyle, a subject not extensively examined by the filmmakers. For breaking the unwritten rule of getting too close to scandal, he was dismissed from the Vatican embassy in 1986 and lost his faculty position at Catholic University. Daniel Wakin of the New York Times writes that Doyle was "quietly removed from his job as an Air Force chaplain" in 2004 by Archbishop Edwin O'Brien, and many believe the decision stemmed from Doyle's outspoken support for sexually abused victims. A man of great moral courage, Doyle remains committed to helping victims and their families, calling the sexual abuse "rape and brutalization of the person's body" and also of "their soul [...] and the anguish and all that goes with that are still there."

3 out of 5 stars A powerful film diluted by excess and lack of focus.......2007-05-28

As I write this, there are already eighteen reviews on Amazon.com, so I have to ask myself whether, after reading them all, I should post a nineteenth. Obviously, I decided I should, largely because so many of the reviews here are so passionate, often owing to the statuses of the reviewers. Indeed, when one ersatz reviewer prefaces a review with "I have not seen the movie," another is a spokesperson for the Catholic Church, and a third edited the film in question, there is a need for more reviews from people who have no personal involvement with the film or its subject except for membership in the human race.

"Deliver Us from Evil" is a remarkable film in at least one salient respect. Prominent in the film is Father Oliver O'Grady, who, by his own admission, molested children while he was a priest in California. What makes his presence so remarkable is that he recounts many of his deeds in an almost stoic fashion and at length. (Thankfully, though, his accounts as they appear in the film are generally not graphic in detail--with the exception of one scene.) O'Grady appears in scene after scene in the film, all of them filmed, I assume, in Ireland, where O'Grady is free after having served seven years in prison in the United States.

We also meet some of the now-adult victims of clergy molestation. One in particular stands out, though I hasten to add that she stands out from the others primarily because of the time the film spends with her and her parents. I do not doubt that the other victims, including those not shown or named, have harrowing stories, but Ann Jyono's case is especially poignant. Her parents were interviewed extensively for the film, and their comments, especially her father's, are deeply painful to watch. For example, there is one scene in which Mr. Jyono tearfully recalls that his daughter refused to tell him what was happening to her because he had said previously that he would kill anyone who hurt her, thus leading her to remain silent lest her father keep his promise and endanger his soul.

"Deliver Us from Evil" is about more than the victims and one molester, though. It is about institutions: the church itself and the priesthood. Indeed, the film spends a great deal of time and effort assigning blame to Cardinal Roger Mahoney of Los Angeles and even the current pope. The charges range from allegations that the church deliberately shuffled pedophile priests from parish to parish, never allowing the new parish to know what it was getting, to more general claims that the church seems more concerned with its finances than with the victims here. On this point, the film loses some steam and some credibility. It may be that every accusation in the film is true--I have no way of knowing--, but what comes through is so one-sided that I had to wonder how much really was true. Granted, the end of the film tells us that the Catholic Church declined to be interviewed, but one cannot help but wonder what responses church officials might have to some of the claims in the film. What we do see of church officials comes through depositions, and here, too, questions arise. Depositions are long, boring, and sometimes contentious affairs, so a few hand-picked minutes of footage is almost certainly misleading in one way or another.

The weakest aspect of "Deliver Us from Evil" is its tendency to offer hypotheses regarding the cause of the molestation. Is it the celibacy requirement for priests, which, the film assures us, has no scriptural support and was created so that the church could gain priests' property when the priests died? Is it, as the film hints, a case of abuse begetting abuse? The film's 103-minute run time is simply insufficient for these issues, especially when there is nobody to defend, say, the celibacy requirement. Instead of a debate, we get one-sided opinions. Certainly I do not begrudge people their opinions, but when the film advances, without opposition, the argument that the celibacy requirement, since it states that all sex for priests is bad, effaces the line between sex with a consenting adult and molestation, there are problems. Is the argument really that men who would otherwise form healthy sexual relationships with adults if they were allowed instead form them with children? If not, what exactly is the point? We never learn since the film just includes this claim without elaboration.

In the end, it may be that the problem is simply too big for one film. By trying to touch on so many different aspects, the filmmakers lose their focus and produce a film with far less power than it could have had. There is still a great deal of raw emotion here, but it is nonetheless diluted. And that's a real shame, because there are two scenes at the end of the film, both involving the Jyono family, that demonstrate what the film could have been. In one, Ann Jyono and another victim travel to the Vatican in the hope of delivering a letter to the Pope only to be turned away. In another, Mr. Jyono, seated next to his daughter, announces with firm belief that there is no god and the Bible is all written by men. There are so many aspects to this statement and the obvious loss of faith that are significant, but perhaps none more so than the fact that as he makes these statements, Ann sobs silently next to him.

4 out of 5 stars Priests Should Marry.......2007-05-19

This movie banned in Singapore and DVD not allowed because of its truthful exposure of pedaphelia by Catholic priests. My mother was catholic but I never received parochrial training and stopped going to church at age 10, and so escaped what might have happed to me.

Oliver O'Grady is a monster should should be in Jail for life. Cardinal Mahoney should be in Jail too.

If you are Catholic and have children, watch this DVD or keep your kids away from priests unless you are present at all times.

I am glad this fildm was shown in Australia where I watched it.

HBO caused a stir when it aired If These Walls Could Talk, a portrait of three women from three generations (all who occupied the same house at various times) who had unwanted pregnancies. HBO utilizes the same gimmick in the sequel, this time telling the story of women who love women.

The three stories of If These Walls Could Talk 2 are uneven. Far and away the most powerful and moving story is the first, taking place in 1961, starring Vanessa Redgrave as a woman "widowed" when her partner of 50 years suddenly dies. Redgrave is phenomenal, and her piece alone makes this sequel worth watching. The 1972 portion stars Michelle Williams, who finds dealing with the sexual politics of the gay community increasingly more complex when she falls in love with a boyish woman (played by Chloë Sevigny). The most modern piece, taking place in 2000, portrays a contemporary lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) determined to have a baby. The light nature of the story detracts from the more serious issues of the earlier segments. Despite the mixed fare, HBO once again proves itself on the cutting edge of moviemaking, with this rather daring film that will both provoke and entertain. --Jenny Brown

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-16

I love this film- it hits on numerous isssues without being too preachy. At different points, the film is funny, cute, serious, hot, and numerous other things. It's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars HBO Rocks Part 2.......2007-01-14

This was an HBO original movie broadcast in 2000. This movie follows three lesbian stories in three different time periods. Vanessa Redgrave stars as a lesbian widow in 1961. Chloe Sevigny and Michelle Williams star as feminists in 1971. Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres star as a modern day lesbian couple trying to have a baby. I found the story of Vanessa Redgrave to be the most touching. It speaks to the need for legal rights for same sex couples and a need for understanding.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-23

A beautiful, touching movie. Well directed and acted. The first story with Vanessa Redgrave is very touching. All three stories have a completely different view of lesbians and are very good. The third story with Ellen & Sharon is very humorous. With stars like Vanessa, Ellen & Sharon, how can this be anything but a very worthwhile film and well acted.

5 out of 5 stars IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2.......2006-11-06

I LOVE THIS MOVIE A BIT MORE THAN #1 MOVIE "IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK", MAYBE CAUSE MORE UP TO DATE, AND MORE I COULD RELATE TO BEING IN MY LATE 40'S. BUT I COULD DEFINATELY RELATE WITH EACH OF THE PERIODS IN THIS MOVIE. THEY ALL SEEMED SO REAL TO ME. I COULD WATCH THIS MOVIE OVER AND OVER, WHICH I DO. ALL THE TIME.

4 out of 5 stars Two out of three ain't bad........2006-09-07

If These Walls Could Talk 2 explores female same sex relationships in different eras, but in the same house.

The first story deals with an old woman who loses her longtime lover due to a fall from a ladder and the eventual death. The dead woman's son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter show up and basically take what is lawfully theirs, the house and its possessions. The old woman is left with nothing and is forced to start over somewhere else despite being in her 60s. I kept thinking to myself, all of this could have been avoided had the dead woman made a will. This story basically deals with how same sex couples don't have the same legal rights. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays the left-behind lover, can't even visit her companion in the hospital room because she's not a relative or spouse. This was definitely the heartwrenching one of the three vignettes.

The second story takes place during the women's feminist movement. Some college lesbian girls go to a gay bar where one of them, Michelle Williams, meets Chloe Sevigny and a romance develops. The only thing, Sevigny's character is butch. And Williams' friends have a problem with a woman acting like a man in order to live the lesbian lifestyle. They see it as defeating the purpose of being a lesbian in the first place. Pretty good performances all around. Nia Long and Natasha Leonne are in the story: both who have played lesbians in other movies.

The third segment deals with a lesbian couple trying to have a baby. It stars Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone. This one is boring. All you see is frantic anticipation and turkey basters. There is a surprising steamy sex scene. It's surprising because I never thought a sex scene with Ellen Degeneres could be steamy. I applaud Anne Heche as a director for being able to pull that off. But, it's still a less compelling story than the other two.

All in all, If These Walls...2 is a good movie. It's certainly more tolerable than its predecessor.

A classic fable gets fused with War of the Worlds in Disney's Chicken Little. In the small town of Oakey Oaks, young Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff, Garden State) struggles to live down the embarrassment of having once thought the sky was falling. But when he gets struck again by a hexagonal, sky-camouflaged, hi-tech doohickey, he and his friends Ugly Duckling (Joan Cusack, School of Rock), Runt of the Litter (Steve Zahn, Sahara), and Fish Out of Water discover that aliens are preparing to invade Earth--but since no one believed Chicken Little the first time, why would they believe him now? Though kids will enjoy the bright whizz-bang action sequences of Chicken Little, discerning parents will find the movie tedious. Technically, it has the computer animation quality of Pixar--but with none of their intelligence, heart, or simple storytelling skill. The basic idea of connecting the fable to aliens is amusing, but the script routinely bogs down in clumsy father-son issues that seem like material edited out of Finding Nemo. The jokes rarely have anything to do with the characters, but are mostly pop-culture references that are sadly out of date. The action sequences were obviously created with the inevitable video game in mind, for which the movie is little more than an advertisement. Chicken Little falls flat. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good "Cute" Movie - 3.7.......2007-06-29

Some of it is a little ridiculous to absurd and that is why the movie is "cute". The writers definitely had to stretch their imagination too much to come up with some of the ideas in the film; yet it was an interesting take on the Chicken Little story. It does keep you interested. When you find out certain things your reaciton is "Oh you've got to be kidding". There are some very funny scenes, particularly towards the end. You've gotta like the Chicken Little at the end, he's COOL! I will watch it again and probably include it in my library for my young children to watch.

    5 out of 5 stars highly entertaining.......2007-06-20

Highly enjoyable. Fun twist on the old. Getting tired of the Disney formula (child missing one or both parent(s)disfunctional and/or ignorant
parent or family member(s) raising misunderstood child)
Love the fact that being yourelf and not conforming to the stereotypical cheerleader and jock theme is encouraged throughout the movie. The characters had depth and personality, the animation was fun, the jokes and little remarks kept the movie rolling. Most younger kids won't get the jokes, or the references but then again kids aren't usually even paying attention to those details. It was just fun to watch.

    5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-05-27

This is a great movie for the young and old. It has a great story line and is funny. A good DVD buy.

5 out of 5 stars More Chicken Little.......2007-04-11

A deft balance between special effects, comedy, and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbor kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. A generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended), and entertaining outing. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars great movie with funny and scary scenes.......2007-03-25

i think this is a very cool movie. it has very scary scenes (like the scene with Antie and the scorpion-- almost made me cry...), and very funny scenes (like the one where the dog starts making rick spin on the rope-- that made me fall to the floor, it was so funny!!!)

all in all, i thought this was a very good movie. i give it a one million star rating!

4 out of 5 stars Rick Moranis's best film yet! besides Ghostbusters of course.......2007-02-10

In this film Joe johnson director makes a movie about kids getting shrunk and spend days in the backyard it seems like a jungle to them! And it shows a close up of what lives in the grass of the back or front yards! like they run into giant Ants, giants Squrpions, and giant bees + other things that seem small to us YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! Also see these films Honey I blew up th kid & Honey we shrunk ourselves

    5 out of 5 stars A Sci-Fi Adventure For The Whole Family.......2007-01-19

This movie has a cartoon proceeding it. Actually, the part of the film that is not suitable for children happens to be the cartoon (Roger Rabbit).

This was an excellent science fiction story. It was thrilling, and well written. There was one scene early in the movie that was forgotten, until a later scene, and then it sent chills down my spine knowing what was next.

I would highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Full Screen is Better!.......2007-01-09

I have both full-screen (Zone 1) and wide-screen (UK) versions and have found that it(Zone 2) seems to be a fake widescreen. The black bars seem to crop upper and lower parts of the screen, on which left and right sides are not added at all.

    Trust me, buy this one...

4 out of 5 stars Honey, You Gotta Buy This Movie .......2006-12-08

In this Disney classic (not exactly), Rick Moranis stars as a absent-minded professor (It's Disney, of course) who invents a shrinking machine
that he thinks will make him money, but instead, shrinks his kids!
Some of the characters/actors are fun, but Moranis sounds too dramatic
for his own good, though he does make up some funny lines and scenes along the way.

    You film buffs should know:

This was actually filmed in Mexico (don't worry, you won't hear any
    ranchera music in the process).

Writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks) makes a huge leap in sophistication with this strong story about a comic-book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams) and actually gets his wish that she love him, too. Their relationship is attacked, however, by his business partner (Jason Lee), who pulls a very unsubtle Iago act to cast doubt over the whole affair. The film has the same sense of insiderness as Clerks--this time, Smith takes us within the arcane, funny world of comic-book cultism--but the themes of jealousy, deceit, and the high price of growing up enough to truly care for someone make this a very satisfying movie. --Tom Keogh

    Description

Chasing Amy is the third installment in the "New Jersey Trilogy" from award-winning writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma). Cult comic-book artist Holden (Ben Affleck) falls in love with fellow artist Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), only to be thwarted by her sexuality, the disdain of his best friend Banky (Jason Lee), and his own misgivings about himself. Filled with Smith's unique ear for dialogue and insight into relationships, Chasing Amy offers a thoughtful, funny look at how perceptions alter lives, and how obsession and self-doubt skew reality.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith's best film..........2007-05-18

Chasing Amy, the third film in Kevin Smith's classic New Jersey trilogy (along with Clerks and Mallrats), just might be the best of the bunch. It packs Smith's usual envelope-pushing dialogue about sex, relationships, etc. and showcases some great comic performances. If you're feeling tired of boring Hollywood fare, Chasing Amy provides a refreshing slap in the face.

Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, Bounce) plays Holden McNeil, a comic book artist who's still looking for the right woman. While attending a comic-book convention with his roommate and Bluntman & Chronic co-creator Banky (Jason Lee, Almost Famous), he meets Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), and they quickly hit it off. Holden is convinced that he's met future girlfriend material. However, there is one minor problem: She's lesbian, a fact that's conveyed in a hilarious bar scene.

After he gets over his initial shock concerning her lesbian preferences, Holden enters into a fast frienship with Alyssa. Their close bond is a source of tension between Holden and Banky, who believes that she's bad news (and perhaps is a bit jealous). As Holden and Alyssa's relationship becomes more intimate, he must also come to grips with her wild past. Whether or not you buy into the film's surprising resolution, there's no denying that it's a ballsy one.

Smith's writing is so sharp that almost any actor (or non-actor) can come off looking good. That said, Jason Lee gives a classic comic performance, spouting off numerous un-PC lines, whether introducing a young toddler to his collection of porn magazines or asking Alyssa about her lesbian habits: "Since you like chicks, do you just look at yourself naked in the mirror all the time?" Affleck delivers solid work in a gutsy role. How much you like or hate Joey Lauren Adams will depend heavily on how you cope with her nasal, high-pitched voice.

Of course, a Kevin Smith film wouldn't be complete without the presence of Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith himself), and their scene is a keeper. While dining with Holden at a restaurant, the two offer relationship advice that's alternately poignant and hilarious.

With a writer/director as daring as Kevin Smith, odds are there will be some scenes in his films that you won't like. However, that's a small price to pay for the many hilarious scenes you do get, and it's also part of the reason that Chasing Amy rewards repeat viewings.

3 out of 5 stars An almost mature film from Kevin Smith..........2007-04-04

This is Kevin Smith's best film. It isn't perfect, but it has a lot of real emotion in it, even though Smith nearly ruins it with his usual oversexed, Generation X schtick. I think the reason this film works well for the most part is that it's really quite sincere in its best moments. Kevin Smith was dating Joey Lauren Adams (the lead actress here) at the time, and had problems dealing with her past. So he made this film as a cathartic experience, and maybe that was good for him to do so (even though him and Joey broke up, so it kind of all was for naught...oops). Anyway, you really believe Ben Affleck falls in love with Joey here, and his scene where he declares his love feels very real and sincere (something Gen X types like Smith are NOT known for). But when Joey just gives up being a lesbian right away for Affleck, it doesn't really feel authentic. Her character was a bit of a whore when she was young, she found lesbianism, now Affleck brings her back to straightdom? It's not entirely believable, but Affleck (in probably his only decent performance before he became a celebrity) is rather believable in this scene. And in the scenes immediately following it, Joey's character seems to be really in love with Affleck. Unfortunately, Smith throws in too many over the top sexual references (the scene where Joey Adams and Jason Lee talk about oral sex injuries is ridiculous and just there to be "in your face"), and the scene where Ben Affleck proposes a menage a trois between Jason Lee and Joey is ridiculous. Affleck somehow gets the idea in his head that Jason Lee has been in love with him his whole life (despite Lee talking about his oral sex injuries with women earlier on), which is completely out of place with his character. Affleck proposes this in front of a TV playing "video aquarium" for some reason. But I really like the ending of this film. It's left totally open, and Smith should be commended for ending the film like that. The film is a bit of a mess, with some questionable character motivations, but it has its good moments, and it's Smith's best film in my opinion.

    5 out of 5 stars A must own DVD.......2007-03-16

This is one of my all time favorite movies; I have probably seen it over 10 times and I still don't get bored with it. Great dialouge and very believable and beautifully flawed characters. Joey Lauren Adams shines in this and it's the only movie I like Ben Affleck in. But be warned, this movie might break your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith in a nutshell........2007-02-27

It perfectly blends his potty mouth with sensitivity and good dialogue. This one and Jersey Girl is widely hated by the typical fans, but they're missing out. It's an unpopular formula that turns many away. You get the ones who like dick and fart jokes who don't appreciate the romance, and you get the other half who like the romance but hate the off-color jokes. For those of you with a taste for both,I reccomend this.

5 out of 5 stars An ingenious comedy with a residual sadness .......2007-01-27

Chasing Amy is an intimate look at relationships and the uncompromising effect of regret. It is extremely rare to watch a comedy that will actually make you think.
This is by far Kevin Smith's most personal movie. It's low budget, the acting is bad (yes even by Ben Affleck), but it's still really enjoyable. Plus, the message is huge--follow your heart and ignore the distractions.
Holden(Affleck)is a comic book artist who falls in love with Alyssa(Adams), a woman who might have a questionable past. Then some rumors surface and her past endeavors start to become quite intrusive to him. Holden's insecurities boil over and puts their happy relationship in deep jeopardy.
This movie is hilarious, touching, and thought-provoking. A one-of-a-kind film.
