As an esteemed television journalist put out to pasture by the networks and faced with the engagement of her son, Jane Fonda is fierce, funny, and ready to rumble as the title character in Monster-in-Law in a way that the rest of the film itself never really is. Jennifer Lopez, the film's other above-the-title star, is set to marry handsome, wealthy Michael Vartan but has one helluva time dealing with his insanely possessive mother. The result is pretty much what you'd expect--lots of snarls and slapstick and an easy, kisses-all-around conclusion, though it is surprising (and maybe a little disheartening) to watch Fonda throw herself into such disposable comedy with such gusto. Director Robert Luketic, who slept while Reese Witherspoon tottered off with his Legally Blonde, once again relies solely on the assembled talent: He leaves a high-wattage Lopez playing things a little too cute, a reedy Vartan looking visibly disinterested, and canny comedian Wanda Sykes making what she can--which, luckily, is a lot--of her role as Fonda's wisecracking personal assistant (the type of black sidekick role that's an indication of how creakily formulaic the film is). See it for Fonda, if you feel like it, then wish her a better engagement in the future. --Steve Wiecking

An overall entertaining movie........2007-06-25

With a star-filled cast and a promising, yet predictable storyline, is Monster-in-Law any good? I, surprisingly, enjoyed it although there are some flaws.

So what's this movie about? Basically, a woman named Charlie falls in love with a man named Kevin. During Charlie's first meeting with her soon to be mother-in-law, Viola, Charlie pops the question, completing surprising his mother. The rest of the movie has Viola attempting to break up the couple while Charlie fights back.

What's to like about this movie? First of all, there are quite a few good actors/actresses in this film. We have Jennifer Lopez (Charlie), Michael Vartan (Kevin), Jane Fonda (Viola), and Wanda Sykes (Viola's assistant). I personally don't care for Miss Lopez but I enjoyed watching Michael, Jane, and Wanda for different reasons. Second, there's quite a few laugh-worthy scenes. Most jokes are typical but a few unpredictable jokes had me laughing out loud. Third, there weren't any dull points and I was eager to find out what happened in the next scene. Oftentimes with romantic comedies such as this film, I'm bored halfway through the movie. Thankfully, this movie was very entertaining and didn't bore me whatsoever.

And what's not to like? As other reviewers have said, it's predictable. However, you wouldn't want the movie to end any other way so this didn't bother me too much. Second, don't expect this movie to be Oscar-worthy. It's entertaining but certainly not ground-breaking.

If you're looking for a no-frills romantic comedy with decent acting, Monster-in-Law is it.

BAD,BAD,BAD!.......2007-06-20

Being a world class Jennifer Lopez fan it pains me to say this, but this movie is terrible! I can only echo another reviewer and wonder how two major Hollywood stars can get talked into or talk themselves into doing something this bad. I gave it one star because you have to in order to do a review. The DVD package comes with two DVD's; the second being deleted scenes,outtakes, etc.. Watch this one and throw the movie away!

Jane Fonda + Jennifer Lopez = LOL.......2007-05-04

Once you watch this movie, you will have a new outlook on your own in-laws. Hopefully. lol Jane Fonda really shines in this movie. She made this movie great!!! She is the perfect Monster-In-Law.......

Monster in Law was very entertaining to me. It was funny and had it's serious moments, the ending was quite predictable but I really thought it was well done.

Bruce Bruce, not fat Bruce, not Big Bruce, not Big Boy, not Fat Boy, thats Bruce Bruce. Bruce Bruce is one of the funniest men in America. This Platinum Comedy Series dvd comes along with a cd version of the "concert". It is definitely worth the money. Great buy, and wonderful comedian.

He's funny on comic view but he's hilarious in stand up.......2006-01-19

Bruce Bruce went to work when he was working on this stand up. You hear some of the same stuff you hear in other stand up's but nobody can compare to his unique delivery. Bruce also speaks on some subjects dealing with his family and this is stuff that the old school can really relate to but the younger crowd can't do anything but crack up at it. The jokes he told I couldn't really tell on Amazon.com but trust me you haven't heard this before. If you want to see some original stand up comedy then get this. What he does on comic view doesn't even compare to what's on this DVD. Maybe this will help, Bruce's platinum series is almost as good as Chappelles platinum Killin Them Softly.
