The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong coproduction, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to Dr. No) is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class martial artists puts this film in a category well above Lee's primitive Hong Kong productions. Unfortunately he's off the screen for large chunks of time as American maverick competitors (and champion martial artists) John Saxon and Jim Kelly take center stage, but once the fighting starts Lee takes over. The tournament setting provides an ample display of martial arts mastery of many styles and climaxes with a huge free-for-all, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted Han in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Probably the best known of Bruce Lee's films, this one has a great cast of supporting actors who were skilled martial artists in their own style.Lot's of great action and a great display of Bruce's unsurpassed skill. Excellent quality of video and audio. This is one of the best remastered films I've seen.
Enter the Dragon.......2007-07-03
"Dragon" breathes fire for purely one reason: the riveting presence of Lee, whose personal charisma and particularly ferocious brand of martial arts made him an international star. Part James Bond-style thriller, part Hong Kong chop-socky extravaganza, "Dragon" was Lee's last film, and quite justifiably his most popular. His battle with the gargantuan fighter Bolo (Sze) is a head-turning highlight, as is the scrappy brawl between real-life karate champions John Saxon and Jim Kelly, playing shady ex-pat Americans. But the film's climax, a harrowing confrontation between Lee and the deadly, claw-fisted Han in a hall of mirrors, turns this kung-fu classic into an extravagant Asian treat.

Well, this movie had a profound impact on me. I discovered Bruce Lee shortly after his death, and then he became my childhood hero. Yes, I had all the posters and all the books. I even studied Wing Chun as an adolescent, just like he did. Speaking of which, it is amazing to me that until his last breath he never really abandoned that style of fighting, despite all his experimentation and despite founding Jeet Kune Do. Leaving aside the opening scene in which he mostly adopts Mui Thai (Kickboxing), and with remarkable prescience, Ultimate Fighting type mixed martial arts, the rest of the film in terms of his hand fighting is strictly Wing Chun: all the trapping hands and short, precise, practical movements and techniques are virtually 100% Wing Chun.
Now, was this Bruce Lee's best film? Well, in some ways in terms of production value it was. But if you pay close attention to Fists of Fury (also known as The Chinese Connection), and Return of the Dragon, you'll find that the production value of those two weren't that far behind ETD, and in some cases was better. Production wise, nothing in ETD can compare with the battle with Chuck Norris in the Coliseum in the climactic scene from Return of the Dragon. Similarly, in Fists of Fury, the battle in the Japanese Karate dojo along with the fight against the big European towards the end are as good, if not better than anything in Enter the Dragon. The one poorly produced film made by Bruce Lee would be The Big Boss, his first on his return to Hong Kong. Although, that too had some scintillating and spectacular fight scenes.
In terms of Bruce Lee himself, I'm afraid to say he was past his prime at this juncture. Remarkable, powerful and masterful yes, but somewhat past the prime he demonstrated in his earlier films. Martial Arts, in the end, is an athletic endeavor, and athletes generally reach their prime in their mid to late 20s and pass it as they approach 30 and beyond. And, of course, Bruce Lee was under an extreme amount of pressure. This would be his make or break film. If it failed he would be finished in Hollywood, if it succeeded he would finally take his place among the Hollywood elite whom he alternately admired, envied and detested. In addition to that, there were guys coming out of the woodwork wanting to fight him and claim the singular distinction of being the one guy who kicked Bruce Lee's butt. When he couldn't avoid it, he actually had a couple of real fights on set during the making of this film, and he didn't dissapoint. There was no fancy stuff, his opponents were quickly and ruthlessly dispatched. Had he lost any of those fights his career would be over.
All in all this film is a classic. It has some of the most brutal and beautiful hand to hand fight sequences ever committed to film. The battles are at once fantastical and savagely realistic. There is a minimum of fakery here, which at the time was the hallmark of Kung fu movies. And while Bruce Lee would always add fancy kicking to his film repertoire, many of his techniques here are in fact practical and commonsensical, and would work on the street if executed by a decent fighter.
Enter the Dragon is the only Bruce Lee film in which we hear his real voice. And it was finally the big budget, relatively carefully made Kung-fu movie everyone was clamoring for. But the greatest compliment I can pay this film is that after having watched it dozens of times over the last 30+ years, I can still watch it over and over again.
The man the myth, the legend........2007-04-02
Bruce Lee was a cult figure/phenomenon that may never be explained, a martial artist, a philosopher, a movie star. This movie I have always thought was his finest effort and showed the more thoughtful introspective side. The original scene with the shaolin,priest was cut out but it really gives you some of his thoughts on Zen and Fighting. Its great that it was put back in. I have to agree with others that in this movie Bruce was beginning to look sick and may have been slowly dying, his face was drawn and he was carrying to little body fat. The speed and power was evident and this is a great movie with a great story.
bruce lee's best...........2007-03-19
i have a lot of bruce lee's work but this is his finest hour... the plot and the movie have the best script and the supporting actors are very good... it also had the best cinematology, great locations... excellent dvd with bruce lee at his best in all categories!!!

The intense soundtrack of Boiler Room is a fitting underscore for this movie, which pulses with the vigor of young, rich, amoral men wreaking havoc. This is not the antisocietal havoc of Fight Club, but the more deliberate mayhem that comes from greed run amok. The testosterone-junkie brokers of J.T. Marlin (the only female in the office is Abby, the receptionist and love interest, played by Nia Long) are out to make the sale, and whether that sale is legal or ethical doesn't matter.
Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams.
Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money. --Jenny Brown

Vin Deisel wimps out in this movie. At the end when the FBI is gonna raid the office he should kick butt!! He doesn't, so it sucks. The best scene is where the Boss tells one of the Stockbrokers that he can't sit down ever again! He has to stand until he makes a sale hahaha. Ben Affleck isn't as good as Alec Baldwin in Glen Gary GlenRoss. He tries to be, but can't. It just isn't good enough of a performance to equal Mr. Baldwin's. Vin Deisel should shoot people with machine guns in the film. He should shoot Affleck hahaha. Go Triple X!!
Good Movie.......2007-05-14
I spent some time in the car business at one point in my life and I developed an appreciation for taking what is yours and making it mine. With that said, if you liked Wall Street and Rouge Trader, then this 90's movie with a similiar storyline should find its way into your collection. For the price, you can't really go wrong.
Good, but cannot overcome "Wall Street".......2006-07-20
Both "Wall Street" and "Boiler Room" have the same moral outline. In both movies, young, ambitious, and smart individuals are looking to make an enormous amount of money in the quickest time possible. Both are doing it on the stock market. Both want to make their fathers proud, and both quickly learn that the only way to get the fast "wall street" money is to get it illegally. Once they realize they are committing crimes, they do it anyway. Then, of course, comes a braking point. Both movies open with shots of New-York city. Only in the "Boiler Room", the soundtrack is rap music. That shows us the evolution of time since "Wall Street" came out. Well, the tastes in music changed, that's for sure, but no change occurred in human nature. "Greed is good", said Gordon Gekko. Greed still reigns supreme in "Boiler Room".
The love story does not end anywhere in "Boiler Room". In this story, the love interest is not a whore and does not like him for the money. And she really needs the job. In this movie, she is a positive character, whereas in "Wall Street", the love interest is a negative character.
Also, in both movies, we do not see the main characters really enjoying their new found wealth. Yeah, Bud Fox did buy a nice apartment, but we never see him free of worry, free of self-doubt and guilt. The same applies for Seth.
Vin Diesel, an excellent actor, ads flavor to the movie, along with Jamie Kennedy and a bunch of other young actors trying to prove themselves. Ben Affleck is in the movie too, although you only see him once or twice and the movie could have gone on without him. That's too bad. I don't know why he agreed to such a mediocre part.
Overall, an enjoyable, easy to follow movie. Not as glamorous, not as flashy, but gets the point across. However, not able to surpass "Wall Street".
Boiler Room May Boil Your Nerves.......2006-07-10
Some folks might rent or buy this DVD for its well known names, but Vin Disel and Ben Afflec play very small roles It is Giovanni Ribsi that shines. He plays a young college drop out, who turns to an in-house, illegal gambling den to help him release his inner rage and built up anxieties towards his demanding father.

But it is his discovery of a Boiler Room operation hawking non-existent stocks and bonds for non-existent companies that really steers this movie.
Fantastic interactions between the main character, and Vin Disel character. I appreciated the relationship beteen Giovanni and the secretary character, but I felt it was under-developed and weak. Could have been left out, or developed better.
I saw this one in the theater, and now own on DVD, and would recommend it to any Pre-MBA student, or Wall Street wannabe. It is great training.

This movie gives you the chills, it reminds you of the all-time classic ''Wall-Street'' with Bud Fox & Gordon Gecko. Only this time it is played by Seth Davis as Bud Fox. Boiler Room has an all-star cast with Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Nia Long, & Ben Affleck... If you haven't seen this film, you are missing out, it is unforgettable and it is one of those keeper DVD's to have in your collection. - Chad Castorina

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed.
The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon

I remember first time I watched this film in movie theatre when it was released to the first theatrical events, I left the room really disappointed. I felt that Floyd had lost one great opportunity of creating a masterpiece of images and music. By that time we all were still under the impact of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album a real masterpiece and there was a great expectation about the film, but I have to confess, I had an insight that it wasn't to happen and why I affirm this, because one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life was my decision of watching the worst film of all times, a film called "Fame" or "Infamous if you like", and guess who was the director of this ridiculous film, yes Alan Parker, so I couldn't expect nothing better from this guy really. Can you all remember good films this guy has been done? Well, no, so do I! It was really a disaster this choice, but how we cannot change what happened, I only can give three stars for the few really good moments this film has, like that of "Goodbye blue sky" and I'm sure this great moments is much more because of the music than the image itself, no, one thing we have to say and recognize "the work of Gerald Scarfe is a real work of genius" he was with Pink Floyd since the creation of the fantastic "The Wall" artwork. Can you all imagine if this film had been done by Ridley Scott with the help of Gerald Scarfe, wow, simply no comments... It would have been a truly masterpiece!
A one hour thirty minute music video.......2007-04-03
And not a great one, by any measure. While I'm sure the Pink Floyd fan boys will slobber all over this and proclaim its genius, the truth is that it's really pretty boring. Random trivial war images, check. Random trivial teen angst and rebellion images, check. Random trivial drug lifestyle images, check. Random trivial imagery of fascist oppression. Hooray! It's paint by numbers anti-establishment. FIGHT THE INSTITUTION! I guess this explains why Pink Floyd zealots have a long standing reputation of excessive drug use, you'd have to be toasted in order to find brilliance here. No dialogue and a non-linear story line makes it so the film is really nothing but a long music video, which like most videos depends on symbolic imagery, and we learn that film isn't Roger Water's medium. Instead of four or five music videos (which is how it would probably be done today) from a solid album, they made one huge video from a concept album. Actually a great idea and quite progressive for the time. But it's still boring. I guess if I'm pressed to say something truly positive about the film, it set a strong precedent that music videos have the potential, as a medium, to do something very special, above and beyond what the song itself could do. That music videos can be something more than just performance/concert videos. Of course, it just showed the potential, it didn't actualize that potential.
Usually, with any criticism of Pink Floyd, you can expect the usual diatribes from the fan base about how you just don't get it, it's over your head, beyond your grasp, blah blah blah, but the sad truth is, there's just nothing here. It's just plain boring.
There's nothing. Well, except maybe we learn that someone in Pink Floyd has serious mommy issues. And even as the film bores you to tears, the music really is fantastic. In fact the music is so great it really does illustrates how they tried so hard, and fell so far short with the film. Buy the album, forget the film! The music alone salvages three stars for this, the album itself rates much higher.
And really, the flower scene? Just lame.
One Stunning Movie1.......2007-03-22
Pink Floyd's the Wall is not your typical rock concert like Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar, but is an allegorical story about a rock star who is descending into madness. Each bad event in his life helps to add another "brick" into the wall of insanity that he, Pink, is building around himself to shut out the real world. While Pink is fictional, he embodies in part the story of real-life Pink Floyd member Sid Barrett whose LSD induced behavior ultimately got him removed from the band and elements of the way Roger Waters was was beginning to feel after touring for a long while which led to his writing The Wall.
At turns grim, weird, bloody, violent, a bit sexy, and even a little bit funny, this movie is very compelling to watch even though it's not as easy to understand (for instance, the marching hammers). Yet, the lyrics of the accompanying Pink Floyd music helps to hold everything together so that the sum of the parts is much greater than the individual parts of this movie. I only gave it four stars instead of five because of the letterbox format that cuts away half of the screen if youhave a small TV set. If you had a huge projection screen it would be a different matter. While DVD offers more features, if you want to see the picture in all of its glory, then until a full screen version comes out (if there isn't one already) it's best to get the VHS version.
Classic.....Takes me back to childhood.......2007-02-15
I was born in the early 70's so I became familiar with Pink Floyd music before ever seeing this movie. I had listened to all my dad's Pink Floyd records secretly while he was at work because he'd never let us listen to them with all the graphic language and adult themes. Then one day my step-brother said there was a Pink Floyd movie called "The Wall" and we got a copy of it to watch. What a great thrill that was!
I own the special edition DVD and it gives me great pleasure to watch this movie on my 62" flatscreen tv with surround sound.

She recognizes Roark's nobility, but fears he has no chance "in a world where beauty, genius and greatness have no chance." Rand did little to dilute her polemics for the screen, resulting in melodramatic scenes that border on high camp, such as Roark and Francon's rather sexually charged discussion about limestone. Rand practiced what she preached. According to a bonus featurette about the making of the film, she refused to trim Roark's then-unprecedented six-minute courtroom speech in which he defends his actions. Even for those who don't adhere to her philosophy, The Fountainhead does offer something rarely seen on screens these days, a man of unshakable principles. And Hollywood could sure note Rand's object lesson about the perils of mediocrity and catering to "the mob." I don't remember how many times I have read the book, but I do remember the first time I watched this movie many years ago and the impression it left in me. Many years later, my daughter in law gave two presents on a father's day, the book and a rental copy of the movie. A few years later I purchased it on DVD to last me forever.
This movie is 100% a copy of the book.

I'm not a big Gary Cooper fan but he absolutely excels as an idealistic architect, probably loosely based on Frank Lloyd Wright. It's fun to watch Patricia Neal as a young beauty. This was a big budget film and had several Hollywood leading people in supporting roles. Filmed in black and white, based on the famous novel of the same name by Ayn Rand.

I've never read Ayn Rand, and this Grand Guignol monodrama doesn't inspire me to start now-- the subtlety of a jackhammer (including an *actual* one), the extreme one-dimensionality of virtually all aspects of this movie, the confusion of intransigence with principles, and the naive suggestion that all that is mainstream is inherently bad and all that is non-conformist is inherently good, paints an outrageously cartoon world. It is a fairy tale that only those who choose to "play the victim" (of society) would find appealing.
In spite of all that (actually, mostly *because* of it) I give it three stars. It does have 1) great production value, 2) quite a bit of laugh-out-loud unintentional burlesque and 3) instills a total amazement that anyone could ever take this remotely seriously even as a metaphor or morality play.
It is in fact, Le Théâtre de l'Absurde which, if intentional would have done Camus proud. I shudder to think that Rand's outlook on life in society was truly as vacuous as is suggested by this movie. But she wrote the screenplay, and apparently had *complete control* so it's not like one can blame someone else for its shallow idealisms. All this makes the claims that "the book is a lot better," rather faint praise, IMHO.

Groundbreaking all around..........2007-03-16
While the book was groundbreaking and continues to be one of the most successful sellers in American literature, the film version also was significant in its own right. Its technological innovations continue to be discussed in film classes, however the photography, building sets, philosophical dialog, and minimalist romanticism make this a pleasantly fascinating watch for any viewer who has ground down their teeth while enduring the schlock pouring out of Hollywood over the past several years.

Frequently given short shrift as a blue movie (which it is) and as mindless (which it isn't), director Adrian Lyne's follow-up to Flashdance (insert own joke here) is a thoughtful, smutty film about a bad sexual relationship. It follows the two-month affair between Elizabeth, an art-gallery dealer, and John, a Wall Street exec. The relationship spirals downward into raunchier sex (filmed, by the way, quite nicely) but principally is about two adults doing adult things but not acting anything like real adults. Attempts at actual human connection, about the longing to be "good," are present here and make this an above-average erotic film. Rourke is just honing his scumbag, bad-boy persona; but it doesn't overwhelm. Lots and lots of Kim Basinger. --Keith Simanton

BDSM Movie.......2007-06-20
This is not your average soft porn - this movie is about a BDSM relationship. If you don't know what that stands for, this may not be the movie for you. If you do, this is one of the best you'll ever see. The seduction and the energy between these two is incredible. Kim Basinger's striptease, performed to Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On," is absolutely classic. They even managed to make the midnight snack scene hot, even though I kept thinking, "Who's going to clean that up?"
This film has a well-deserved cult status in the genre. If you're able to appreciate the beauty of this type of relationship, the only real disappointment is the way the movie ends.
If you love the story, I would also recommend the book this was based on, Nine and a Half Weeks: A Memoir of a Love Affair. However, if you find the ending of this movie depressing, you definitely don't want to see the sequel, Another 9 1/2 Weeks, unless you just can't get enough of Mickey Rourke scowling.

pre-pro boxer face are very sexy indeed. My problem was with Elizabeth (Kim), with this type of encounter, either you're into it or your're not. Don't try to make it anything else than it is. Either enjoy it or leave. Which is what she did at the end. Once this type of relationship is exposed to light it dies, because it was all an illusion anyway. But very erotic. Enjoy!

The physical dvd itself is encased in a rather flimsy cardboard and plastic folder. The opening scenes looked like the transfer to dvd was made not from a master but rather from some well-worn film salvaged from a cellar. Beyond these superficial but distracting esthetics (I guess you get what you pay for) the movie starts out with reasonable characters and circumstances. The mental and emotional submission is gradual, calculated, and believable. Unfortunately, the movie seems to go downhill very quickly after Basinger's first violently achieved submission to Rourke -- or perhaps Basinger's plight just became too unmistakably sad and relevant for the movie's message to be well-received. Any possible maturation in Rourke's character as hinted by the end of the movie is weakly developed at best.

Perfect style of movie, perfect match of actors - that makes big value of film. Very sensual movie that have nothing to do with all bad things that was said about it.
5 stars for actors, scenario, directing and perfect act.

What a great line from Hot Shots 2!! This movie was great. Sheen gets thrown in the slammer, and Douglass acts like a big shot the whole movie. Ten piece suits and a lot of other stuff. Sheen probably became a garbage man like in the movie, "Men At Work" after being released from prison.

The film avoids as much as possible the sentimental side of things and concentrates on the financial depth of the business. There is a slight touch of romanticism with the cover-girl, sorry home decorator. There is a little bit more feeling with the father, maybe because the father is playing the father and the son is playing the son, though it remains essentially business, in this case union business. Then there is nothing but buying and selling, owning and dumping, saving and killing, and the game is only pleasant if it is always both together. To kill one by saving another and to buy one in order to make the other sell and then buy him out. Even the police and justice are used that way. I expose you to the police to humiliate you and have you arrested, but then you trap me for the police with a tape-recorder and you will get a rap on the fingers from the judge while I will get to prison. When you know that that I was the one who wanted to kill a certain company that that you decided to save by having it bought by the sworn enemy of that I, you understand what inside business and inside dealing and inside embezzling and inside anything you want means. Just read or watch American Psycho, Unrated Version, and you will have the schizophrenic reading of the same situation. This film is maybe slightly too technical, but it is the way we are totally messed up in our lives by a bunch of psychopaths who have enough money to buy the federal government out of the federal reserve at Fort Knox, or vice versa, which might even be funnier. As Gekko said so simply: "You're not naive enough to think we are in a democracy. It's the free market." And we are the bait to catch the fish or the fish caught by the hook, or even maybe nothing but the hook itself to catch the shark.

Oliver Stone's Best FIlm..........2007-02-27
Oliver Stone is one of my favorite "Hollywood" filmmakers, and I have enjoyed many of his movies over time. While I haven't seen a few of his works, he has given more than his share of fine cinema from his beginnings, and I count "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," "JFK," and "Nixon" as among his better efforts, and I applaud and repeatedly watch parts of all of these. However, to me, Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" is, overall, his best.
For one thing, it avoids a lot of the overlength and filler in many of his other films, as well as his sometimes uncomfortable mixture of fact and fiction/speculation. "Wall Street" is pretty much a standard length and mainstream studio production, and while, as in almost all Stone films, it has a message to preach, in this one, he goes for a much lighter, more obscure, and subtle but just as powerful approach. And while this is fiction, and does not really deal with actual known historical or present-day people, the message here, both moral and profound, seems as timely these days as when the movie was first released in the 80's. That "morality" message posits that pursuit of profits and materialistic riches above any/most other considerations, especially above individual human integrity and decency, is an eventually losing proposition for any truly decent, thinking person, with true integrity.
Being a more "conventional" film, the "morality message" here may pass way over a lot of people's heads, especially those Oliver Stone haters who've never seen this and/or who are automatically turned off to any Oliver Stone effort, but the message remains Stone's most powerful, if obscure. And this is a must see, and Stone's overall best movie.
Charlie Sheen, (and to a lesser extent, his real life father and cinematic icon Martin Sheen, who amazingly enough plays the main character's real life father), as well as an outstanding performance by oscar-winning Michael Douglas, and other acting gems, as well as a fast-pace, little filler, linear plot and execution, add up to something really special.
The junior Sheen plays an up and coming and hoping, Wall Street, poor, "player" wannabe, who works as a going nowhere fast financial investments seller within the legal stock market system, whose main goal is to get close to one of the real players in the American financial market. After much effort, he finally and with dogged persistence, gets a short "meeting" with an all powerful, super-rich, almost legendary established player in the form of Michael Douglas.
Selling his soul early on, "Bud" (Charlie Sheen) soon begins to throw aside all of his roots and basic decent, moral upbringings, as well as the fate of his father and many decent working folks, in order to happily fall under the spell of his sociopathic leader/teacher (Gordon Gekko - Douglas), and enjoys enormous financial "success" within the philosophy of his indecent mentor. For awhile, the almost religious mantra of Gekko's "greed is good" more than succeeds, but for a short time only.
Before long, Sheen finds himself in a swank upper-east side Manhattan apartment, with money and the company of a beautiful, intelligent, but shallow girl (the best that can be bought), and sees a promising future as a true Wall Street player and wealthy corporate parasite. Trouble is, he loses his soul and moral fiber somewhere along the way, and realizes that for all his material gains, he has hurt the real people closest to him, and has betrayed them and his own self as well.
While Oliver Stone could've resolved and ended the film in a way he might've these days (strangely and sadly and even more so the same as it ever was concerning rich versus poor, haves versus have-nots, etc.), when corporate interests and money hunger rules over substance, he gives us instead a character who finally and deeply realizes the evil he has helped create, and does something about it.
If only the true humanitarian message and morals of this film could be realized and understood by our present day corporations, CEO's, power brokers, and by our indecent PTB and politician/law-makers (and the superficial and sensationalist-driven mainstream media and Hollywood elite), this world would be, I believe, a lot better one in which to live.
This is a film as topical as anything since, unfortunately, but the lessons have yet to be learned, and if anything, the PTB (powers that be) have only since gained more and more, at the expense of others less fortunate. For those viewing this as simply a pretty decent flick, without any heavy moral undertones, it is still Stone's most satisfying and easily understood filmic experience. In addition however, for those who read between the lines, and truly get the under-the-surface morality message here, it simply but powerfully renders upon the viewer a deep questioning of what "success" really is, and at what acceptable cost.
"Wall Street" was produced in the 80's, but its message and power, seem as true today as ever. Unlike so many other murky or over the top Oliver Stone films though, it remains, and probably will for some time, the definitive cinematic morality play from one of America's greatest filmmakers. Its message is clear, upon repeated viewings, and that is that reality is, we are all in this together, we sink and/or swim together, and harming others in the pursuit of selfish gain, is a moral philosophy doomed to spiritual and individual failure, in the end. No matter how great the temporary materialistic gains.
If you only see one Oliver Stone film in your life, let it be his best, in my view, this one. If its subtle but sublime morality message does not grab you at first, it probably will eventually, as you think about it more and more later on.
Arguably Oliver Stone's best film.......2007-02-19
Wall Street is the story of young, naive stockbroker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) who is too impatient to go through the right channels to success and instead lets him impatience get him in trouble. Sick of cold calling, Bud Fox goes straight for the big fish... in this case, Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) an entrepreuneur who is often written about in Fortune magazine, aka the Bible. When Bud gets involved with Gordon, before he knows it he's losing all his inhibitions, caring nothing about the consequences of his actions, and is involved in an insider trading scam that threatens to ruin his family.
Wall Street is arguably Oliver Stone's best film, and has the solid acting, stellar film quality, and impressive use of light and sound to earn itself the title. It's even more relevant in the insider trading obsessed climate of the early 21st century, and I think its tale of backstabbing and betrayal will--sadly--always have a place in modern society. Charlie Sheen shines as a naive, impatient young buck who refuses to take the necessary time to achieve success on his own and instead is willing to cut any corners on the path to fame and fortune. Michael Douglas plays the villain perfectly, without remorse and with no qualms about who gets crushed in the process. For anyone who enjoys Oliver Stone films or impressive drama with a solid cast, I'd recommend Wall Street.

Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is the quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night. Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty diapers. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack's predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of movie romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage's perfect match as Jack's idealized but imperfect wife, and the movie's appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It's a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy, and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. --Jeff Shannon

This is an inspriation movie that helps you take pause in your life and consider possibility. Nicolas Cage has once again done an excellent job of taking the character and making them real. This is a movie that I share with my family and that we all enjoy and talk about. It's in my library and shall remain their for quite some time.
Truly disappointing; leaves a bad taste.......2007-03-26
This is the typical film that looks uplifting when you see it, but that when afterwards you start thinking about it, you realize how phony and manipulative it is. Here, Nicolas Cage is an arrogant yuppie businessman in Manhattan, who one day wakes up and finds himself in a paralell world, living a supposedly dreadful life in suburban New Jersey with his wife (her former girlfriend, in his previous life) and his (previously non existent) kids. The beautiful Tea Leoni, as the wife, deserved better than to be in this movie. The movie chastises the main character for not raising a family, yet the film shows family life as dreadful. The idea that Nicolas Cage had to sacrifice a family in order to get ahead in business is also phony. Most male yuppies are married; it's the women that usually have to made those sacrifices. Also, this movie is supposedly critical of heartless capitalism, yet it ends up celebrating it.

I don't know how many married guys can recall it, but I know the exact time I decided to finally take the plunge with my then-girlfriend (now my wife). It was about an hour after I watched Nicolas Cage's Family Man, a full-wonder story about a wealthy Wall Street guy, Jack, given a glimpse of the non-wealthy life he could have lived had he not gotten on a plane and be separated from his then-girlfriend almost 2 decades ago.
The transitional moments, from big-time dealer to small-time salesman, are hilarious. Used to waking up alone or with girls he just met, Jack wakes up with a wife and two kids and a dog jumping all over him. He rushes away to his sky-scraper to see his name - next to President - replaced by his junior. He tries to get into premium condo but the doorman doesn't recognize him and blocks his entrance. He struggles to change his baby son's, Josh, diapers. He has to ask his daugher, Annie, what the after-school S.O.Ps' are. He curses when his junior appears on TV shaking hands with a two corporate presidents whose merger his (ex-)company has arranged.
But then Jack learns - or discovers - the joy of loving and living in spite of financial want, in spite of the no-cushion savings, in spite of not having that suit which makes him "feel like a man" (but which requires taking out his kids' education fund). He misses his trappings of status but grows to love Kate, Annie and Josh more than anything in the world. The quote at the start, by Arnie his friend, captures Jack's seizing and holding on to a family he knows he loves without having to figure out entirely this new world he's been thrown into.
Sorrow beckons, though, when he realises he has to 'leave' this dream-like alternate reality which he started out hating but ended up cherishing. When the moment comes, it's full of dread, because he's back to his old super-wealthy but no-family life. He drives to the house belong to "him and Kate" but there's just a guy there who doesn't know any Kate. The real Kate is now a hot-shot lawyer, who's just packing up and about to transfer to Paris.
Final drama arrives when Jack rushes to the airport looking for Kate, and trying to stop her before she flies off. Remember we are already in the "real world" and Jack has stopped 'dreaming'.
He creates some commotion because Kate is already at the departure gate and about to board, and she keeps saying, "Jack, do you need closure?" which is probably what any woman would say if her boyfriend from 15 years ago, started pestering her about what "could have been". Kate then turns towards the gate and walks away. Jack is about to give up when he suddenly turns to Kate and desperately cries out to describe the alternate reality he's lived through with an alternate her:
"We have a house in Jersey. We have two kids, Annie and Josh. Annie's not much of a violin player, but she tries real hard. She's a little precocious, but that's only because she says what's on her mind. And when she smiles...
"And Josh, he has your eyes. He doesn't say much, but we know he's smart. He's always got his eyes open, he's always watching us. Sometimes you can look at him and you just know he's learning something new. It's like witnessing a miracle.
"The house is a mess but it's ours. After 122 more payments, it's going to be ours. And you, you're a non-profit lawyer. That's right, you're completely non-profit, but that doesn't seem to bother you.
"And we're in love. After 13 years of marriage we're still unbelievably in love. You won't even let me touch you until I've said it. I sing to you. Not all the time, but definitely on special occasions. We've dealt with our share of surprises and made a lot of sacrifices but we've stayed together.
"You see, you're a better person than I am. And it made me a better person to be around you. I don't know, maybe it was just all a dream. Maybe I went to bed one lonely night in December and I imagined it all. But I swear, nothing has ever felt more real.
"And if you get on that plane right now, it'll disappear forever. I know we could both go on with our lives and we'd both be fine, but I've seen what we could be like together. And I choose us."
Little did Cage & Co. know that six years later, there would be another movie with another husband, another wife and another two kids (plus another dog which looked like the dog in Family Man). This movie is also about family and getting a glimpse into a major What-If. Whilst Cage started out in a scenario he did enjoy and ended back in the same situation he later detested, the main character of this movie starts out being "tired with his life", but ends back in the same situation an entirely changed man, thoroughly grateful for the life he has (as opposed to the life he thought he had lost).
I'm talking about Adam Sandler's Click. But I won't ruin two movies at one go (smile), so I'll end with the theme which unites these two masterpieces: Family is first, the job is completely secondary. Never take for granted the ones who love you, no matter what riches beckon and no matter how attractive alternatives may appear to be.
Cute Movie.......2007-03-13
I LOVE movies and have an ever increasing, eclectic collection. This is a movie that I like to watch if I want to smile. It's a feel good movie I think, a nice family film. A man has a chance to explore one "what if" of his life, and he expereinces the ups and downs of family life. The older daughter is just the cutest and when she knows theres something different about him and assumes he's an alien and says welcome to Earth, so cute! I think the ending is a little strange but it's good that it's not a "perfect" predictable canned ending.

With the title of family man I did not think they would put the "F" word in the movie. It would have been an excellent movie if it were swear free.

For anyone who views holiday gatherings with equal parts joy and dread, The Family Stone offers plenty of comedy to identify with. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha's slapstick premise begins when Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings his fiancé Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) home to meet his family for Christmas. It's an instant disaster when parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) agree with their gay, deaf son Thad (Ty Giordano, who is actually hearing impaired), pot-smoking son Ben (Luke Wilson) and daughters Amy (Rachel McAdams) and Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser) that Meredith is way too uptight to be welcomed into their family. Meredith recruits her sister Julie (Claire Danes) to help her thaw the Stone family cold front, and after building a solid emotional foundation for his holiday comedy, Bezucha starts to stack the deck with plot developments that, while heartwarming, border on the absurd. You either go with the movie's flow or you don't, and with this appealing cast (featuring some really nice work by Keaton, Nelson, Parker and Danes) it's easy to forgive Bezucha's unlikely blend of yuletide cheer, petty animosities, and romantic tables turned in the blink of an eye. Toss in a case of terminal illness and you've got a sad-happy tearjerker that works in spite of itself. If you don't recognize at least part of your own holiday clan in The Family Stone, you probably haven't been paying attention. --Jeff Shannon

This movie has a great cast and is funny and serious at the same time, has a great family story that is typical of todays families that seem to get together only once or twice a year. I have watched it several times already and have enjoy it each time I watch it.

With 167 reviews in the can already, I can only say that I really hated this movie. Thankfully, I saw it on DVD and was able to stop whenever I wanted, which was often. The movie was simply overdone to the point of viewer exhaustion. If you have to see it, rent it or catch it on a movie channel. Don't waste your money on this bad flick.
Wonderful, quirky, unexpectedly touching film.......2007-05-23
Anybody who has a family that is "different" or has had to go through hard times together will appreciate this movie. All of the reviews that spoke about this movie being "unrealistic" should really get a clue. Realistic is very relative (there are some families where the kids go nuts and murder the parents - would that have been more realistic?). I thought the family dynamics in this film were excellent and well-acted.
It is easy to see why the family Stone doesn't like the eldest son's prospective fiance, Meredith (played by SJP to a "T"), because in the beginning she is so, well, unlikeable! Its easy to believe that the family's opinion of Meredith is so heavily influenced by the youngest daughter Amy (played by my favorite actress Rachel McAdams, and anyone who has said, "who is she" should see the amazing movie "The Notebook"), who met Meredith at a prior time and didn't like her. Why? Because how many times has your sister/brother/daughter gone on about a person that they don't like and has made you dislike them? This is because you tend to side with the person, who, DUH, you've known all your life as opposed to someone you've never even met.
Some of the plot lines may have been a bit far-fetched, i.e. the brother falling for his girlfriend's sister and the girlfriend falling for her boyfriend's brother in the matter of a day. But what this really meant to illustrate, is, that a) you never know when you are going to find true love b) you shouldn't walk away from it just because it may not be the perfect timing c)life is too short to spend it with the wrong person. I thought the scene with Meredith's sister Julie (played by Claire Danes who looked beautiful in this movie) and Everett (the oldest son) where she talks about the man with the "hole in his heart" is really a foreshadowing metaphor for Everett, who is with Meredith but is obviously walking around with a big hole in his heart that needs to be filled.
Addressing the terminal illness part - if you watched the movie you know that the mother is dying of breast cancer (DUH for all the people who asked, "what kind of cancer is she even dying from anyway"). The scene that OBVIOUSLY demonstrates that is when she opens her shirt to reveal her mastectomy scar. While some people were offended by that, the fact that she is not ashamed of this disfigurement and that her husband isn't turned off by it just demonstrates the depth of their love for each other. Other reviews have remarked that well, she looked healthy, which I think is just an absurd remark. The movie didn't show her on a treadmill for God's sakes. It even shows her napping in the middle of the day. People are so over-critical. I'm sure nobody wanted to be beat over the head with overwrought scenes of the mother showing how ill she was. Plus she was trying to keep it a secret from her children.
The last scene that I'm going to get on my soapbox about is the Christmas Eve dinner scene. The one where Meredith makes the well-intentioned but cruel remark about the gay son Thad not being "normal" and being "challenged" because of his sexual orientation. People are outraged because they thought the family's reaction to her statement was too mean. And I challenge everyone who thinks that to put themselves in that family's shoes. I have a deaf mother and I am fiercely overprotective of her, even to a fault. Our culture is not friendly to people who are different - everyone knows that. Is it so hard to believe that a close-knit family like the stones would overreact when an outsider criticizes a family member? Especially one that has probably had to deal with more than his share throughout his life?
Sorry for the novel. I just get so irritated when people criticize things without truly thinking it through. This is an excellent movie and I highly recommend it.

What a Movie.......2007-04-04
Although marketed to be another awkward comedy like what poor Ben Stiller had to face in Meet the Parents, The Family Stone is anything, but simply eccentric. Yes, the fiance is uptight, grating and at times humorless, but this movie is far less about uncomfortable comedy than about uncomfortable reality. In truth, its an intense drama about life, love, growing up, growing old and facing death with only your family(as dysfunctional as everyone's are)to hold it all back with you. Superb performances from the unconventional cast and Diane Keaton's character is especially nuanced and heart-breaking in her depth and courage.

The Wall (Live in Berlin) seemed uninspired and gimmicky in 1990 but looks and sounds terrifically compelling on DVD, thanks to its vivid image quality and greatly improved audio mixes. The freshly mineswept Potsdamer platz--a once-thriving plaza destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943--proved the perfect place to mark the opening of the Berlin Wall with an all-star production of Pink Floyd's magnum opus: a Wall for a wall. An unlikely assemblage of musicians augments Roger Waters's impressive house band (led by guitarist Rick DiFonzo and organ wizard Nick Glennie-Smith), with everyone from the Scorpions to Joni Mitchell to the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Army getting in on the rock-opera action. Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, James Galway, Thomas Dolby, and Albert Finney all turn in tasty cameos, while Sinead O'Connor looks unaccountably aloof in "Mother." The documentary is thorough and juicy, and producer Tony Hollingsworth offers an above-par essay in the booklet. --Michael Mikesell

I saw part of this late one night while half asleep and searched for more than a year to find it. Highly reccomend to anyone who is a Floyd fan. Or a fan of Rock Opera's.
Great Cover to a great album.......2007-06-08
This is a great DVD.
It becomes greater once you read the album notes.
One can only imagine the feeling that those who attemped the concert felt considering it was done after the Berlin Wall was torn down.

I love Pink Floyd/Roger Waters stuff (In The Flesh Live is my favorite concert DVD) but I'd avoided this for years because, frankly, I didn't want to see The Wall done by a bunch of people not even remotely connected to Roger Waters' music (Scorpions, Jerry Hall, Cyndi Lauper, etc). Finally I gave in and what a surprise! Not only is the stage show an unbelievable spectacle to behold but the music and performers are great. Van Morrison, Scorpions, Cyndi Lauper, Ute Lemper, Bryan Adams, Paul Carrack, Sinead O'Connor,etc., all do really good jobs with the songs they are given. The only two performances that I didn't care for were Joni Mitchell (Goodbye Blue Sky) and Jerry Hall (Are All These Your Guitars?). Joni Mitchell's voice is very good but she embellishes a little too much for my taste and Jerry Hall's speaking part was a bit too over the top. Other than that, my only disappointment is that this is in (it's original) fullscreen version. An anamorphic 16x9 presentation (it is cropped however from the fullscreen) does exist on The Wall: Live In Berlin (Special Edition) but this disc is either a) a non-Region 1 disc or b) no longer unavailable. The 5.1 sound was very good but lacked a bit in the low end. Overall, the concert is spectacular, the performers are really good, the audio is great, and the video is average. The documentary is worth watching, too. I was completely overwhelmed with how good this concert really was and only regret not having gotten the disc sooner.

This title is a must have for any pink floyd fan. Worth every penny. This concert is a must see since it was the rarest of all pink floyd concerts."At least in my book".
