From Lucy-tormented Hollywood A-listers and bongo-propelled production numbers to archival goodies such as long-lost footage, there is much to love in this collection of all 13 episodes from The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show (also known as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour). Following I Love Lucy's sixth and final season, these monthly (give or take) specials reunited America with Ricky and Lucy (and Keith Thibodeaux's adorable Little Ricky, still living the country life in Connecticut. The expanded, hour-long format allowed for celebrity guest stars and excursions to far-flung locales, such as Japan and Mexico. Not matter where they go, Lucy can always be counted on to act, in Desi's words, "a little crazy in the head," which is how she winds up masquerading as Ernie Kovacs' chauffeur in "Lucy Meets the Moustache" (an episode making its home-video debut), dangling Milton Berle from a construction crane in "Milton Berle Hides Out at the Ricardos," or sparking a uranium uproar in Las Vegas in "Lucy Hunts Uranium."

A highlight of this set is the first-ever home video release of the uncut version of "Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana," a flashback episode in which Lucy meets Ricky on a "maiden voyage" to Cuba. She also meets future best friend Ethel (Vivian Vance) and her new husband Fred (a toupeed William Frawley), and goes overboard for her first celebrity sighting, Rudy Vallee. Because these episodes do not play as often in syndication, they seem fresher than their endlessly re-run counterparts. They are full of delights for movie, TV, and Lucy buffs, among them, Fred MacMurray getting "Uranium" fever, Maurice Chevalier singing "Yankee Doodle Boy" in the "Mexico" episode, prolific character actor Sid Melton as a bellboy in the "Alaska" episode, and a va-voom Vance decked out as maid and a dance hall girl, respectively, in the "The Celebrity Next Door" and "Milton Berle" episodes. Among this set's prodigious bonus features include 1951 color footage that an audience member surreptitiously filmed, rediscovered scenes that were cut from the original broadcasts, and a filmed presentation to Westinghouse, which sponsored the series. If you don't add this to your library, you have some 'splainin' to do. --Donald Liebenson

Description

The I Love Lucy Hour Shows is a series of hour-long specials that aired from 1957-1960 that continued the I Love Lucy saga. Housewife Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) lives in Westport Connecticut, with her bandleader husband, Ricky ( real-life husband Desi Arnaz,) and their son, Ricky Jr. (Keith Theibodeaux.) Always nearby are the couple's best friends Fred and Ethel Mertz (William Frawley and Vivian Vance.) Ricky's job as an entertainer requires him to travel a lot. As a result, he often takes Lucy, little Ricky, and the Mertzes with him to such far-off places as Japan and Mexico. Ricky's career also allows him to meet many famous celebrities, from Betty Grable to Ida Lupino. Of course, when Lucy meets up with these celebrities, chaos naturally ensues.

5 out of 5 stars Lucy Desi Comedy Hour - THE COMPLETE SERIES.......2007-06-28

If you just looked at this product or own the DVD'S, you know that the show is relly the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour. I got a little disapointed when they titled it "I Love Lucy" - don't get the wrong impression, I have been a fan of this show since in began in 1958, but what disapointed me was they did not title in "The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" I pre-ordered this item months in advance like any life long Lucy fan probably did, and I have watched all of the episodes countless times since March 13, 2007. I am happy they released it on DVD, just not what they title it. If you own the item, or look closely at the picture, it will say "The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" in small print. Also, I do not understand why they made the box small, so, look at the I Love Lucy sets, they are 4 DVD sets and the box is HUGE, this set in 4 DVD'S, but the box is so small. The show ran for three years with a total of 13 episodes. Starring Lucille Ball, Dezi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley.
Anyway, if you stuck to reading this review this long, I will stop complaining of the company who released this. The last episode in this set with the guest star, Ernie Kovacs was the last episode Lucille Ball played her famous character, Lucy Ricardo. Also, the day after filming the last episode, Lucille Ball divorced Desi Arnaz. Again, if you stuck to reading this review, I hope it was helpful, and if it wasn't I am sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing left out.......2007-06-14

Up until now, the first episode "How Ricky & Lucy Met" with Ann Sothern & Cesar Romero omitted the original opening and closing with Hedda Hopper.

Lots of trivia & scenes left out on video tape are all there now. Plus there's some color footage.

I had invested a hefty amount of money to get these episodes on video tape. I debated a lot about replacing them on DVD. I'm glad I replaced them. Every Lucy fan needs this DVD collection.

I now have the COMPLETE "I Love Lucy" collection. I'm glad I do

5 out of 5 stars Keep Lucy Coming!!.......2007-05-28

I own this dvd collection and am really happy with it.
I just hope that this release prompts season set releases.
Please vote for ALL of Lucy's remaining shows to be released as season set dvds at tvshowsondvdcom. We now have complete sets of I Love Lucy and The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour. We just need The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, and Life with Lucy.

3 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor!!!.......2007-05-27

I have longed for years to have (I confess, even to SEE) "The Celebrity Next Door", and how did my heart leap for joy when I discovered that my time had finally arrived! When the set arrived, I fell at once upon this episode as if I were being reunited with a dear old friend, long since given up for lost ... only to discover to my dismay that the episode I was watching was ... NOT COMPLETE!!! And, in fact, that the cuts had not, IMHO, been terribly well-considered (lines are missing upon which later jokes depend, as in the case of the Strawberry Allergy, or Fred's Butler-Walk). I have not watched any of the other episodes, so I cannot testify directly, but how can one expect they have not met a similar fate? On the other hand, I am in no way nearly as familiar with any of them, and so I may perhaps at least hope to enjoy the bliss of ignorance!
For the moment, however, I am left feeling rather flat.

5 out of 5 stars This Show, by any Name, is Just as Funny.......2007-05-25

After six successful seasons of I LOVE LUCY, Desi wanted to slow down and try other things. But, since I LOVE LUCY was such a huge hit, CBS wanted to keep it going. So they reached a compromise. They would do three or four hour long episodes of the show for the next few years instead of the weekly half hour shows. The resulting show has had many names over the years, but not matter what you call it, it is funny.

The set up is exactly the same. In fact, it feels like we never left. The Ricardos and the Mertzes are living in Connecticut. But Ricky's band's appearances lets them travel the world. And they also meet up with all kinds of famous people. That's right; every one of these thirteen episodes features a famous guest star or two. And you just know that when Lucy gets around a celebrity, chaos ensues.

There are several highlights to the set. "The Celebrity Next Door" is hysterical as Lucy tries to get new neighbor Tallulah Bankhead to help with the PTA benefit. Later on, she goes the same route with Milton Berle and tries to help him finish his book. When Paul Douglas starts a new morning show, Lucy lands a job as his "Girl Friday." But does she really want a job? And a USO show in San Diego leads to all kinds of border crossing problems that end with Lucy fighting a bull.

About the only show here I don't like is "Lucy Goes to Alaska." A long section is made up of a sketch that she does with comic Red Skelton. It was funny for a while, but goes on too long. And the rest of the plot just isn't that funny.

But that's the only low point. The rest of the shows are wonderfully funny. Any Lucy fan will laugh the entire way through them.

And this set is great as well. The thirteen hour long shows are preserved on four discs. And they look and sound great. The special features are nothing new for the TV show, and that's not a bad thing. We get information on the guest cast, and since I've never heard of some of these stars, that's great. Additionally, we get the flubs, deleted scenes, and original opening and closing that were standard on the other sets. For something different, we get the 40 minute sponsor presentation that Desilu studio did for new sponsor Westinghouse and some color home movies of the set from 1951.

There are some real gems in this set. And I'm thrilled to have it to complete my I LOVE LUCY collection.

The producers of The "I Love Lucy" 50th Anniversary Special had a tough assignment, and they triumphantly rose to the occasion. Ostensibly a vehicle for a fan-selected list of top 10 favorite "I Love Lucy" episodes (available in the Best of I Love Lucy Collection), this 2001 special covers all the requisite territory with a solid sense of history and affectionate nostalgia, combining loving reminiscence and commentary (by such luminaries as Lily Tomlin, Barbara Walters, and Dick Van Dyke) with vintage clips from the selected episodes. More substantial segments demonstrate the deeper significance of the Lucy phenomenon past and present, from Desi Arnaz's influential impact on Latino culture in America to Lucy's historic onscreen pregnancy. When surviving children Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. visit their mother's childhood home, their emotions are as genuine as I Love Lucy's cultural importance, adding gentle tears to an abundance of laughter. As valentines go, this anniversary couldn't be more special. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Die Hard Lucy Fan - Pay Attention.......2007-01-15

For those of us that follow the life and times of Lucy and Desi this DVD has some film footage that I had not seen in any other compilation. This includes interviews with Lucy and Desi Jr and a return to Lucy's hometown, Jamestown.

Several never before told stories are included and guest star interviews are insightful and well done.

DVD quality is excellent and the production is equally superb.

5 out of 5 stars Touching, Tear-Jerking, Totally Terrific!.......2005-09-24

I've always been a fan of anything with the "Queen of Comedy"--but this had to be The Best!! Seeing other celebs give their views of how I LOVE LUCY impacted development of TV was good, but this rare showing of Lucie & Desi Jr. together made it terrific! There was NOTHING "STAGED" about the children's love for their parents! Desi Jr's emotions at seeing his mother's birthplace for the first time was so heartfelt; and their blend in "Patria" honoring their Dad was just great!) Having them in this tender (& lovingly emotional) family tribute made this the "creme-de-la-creme" for me!
This tribute is a true gem--not just to great actors, but showing the bond of love that makes a family. "FAMILY"--just one wonderful value that made us love the series then--and why WE STILL LOVE LUCY today!!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the Greatest Show of all Time!!.......2003-04-20

I LOVE LUCY!! This show was really a big hit. It was bigger than big. In this video they go behind the scenes of "I Love Lucy." They even go to Jamestown, New York to show you where Lucille ball grew up. They talk about Lucy and Rickys childhood backgrounds. This is full of information that any Lucy fan would find interresting if you don't know it already. Its worth the money. They even have celebrities who talk about what they thought about the show with Whoopi Goldberg starting out the video. This is for any Lucy fan. They also count down the top 10 most popular Lucy episodes in the video. Get it while you can. Its worth it!! This is suppose to be the VHS version.

5 out of 5 stars A resonse for "A viewer from Zhukovsky, Russia ".......2003-02-11

Read the descriptions of items before you buy them. It clearly says "...with vintage clips from the selected episodes..." Clips does not mean full episodes. Personally, I thought this was an excellent DVD about the history of "I Love Lucy." And guess what, reviewer from Russia, in order to have a history video, you must have information on the actors. This video provides accurate information about all aspects of the show, characters, actors, and the actors' personal lives. The very special part is that they got Lucie and Desi Jr., the children of Lucy and Desi, to comment on the show and on their parents, as well as sing a revitalization of "Babalu." A must have for any "I Love Lucy" enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars LOVING LUCY'S LEGACY.......2003-01-20

As much an homage as it is a documentary, "The `I Love Lucy' 50th Anniversary Special" is ideal for those who would love to find out just why the legacy of Lucy lives on. The special features vintage clips from some of Lucy's funniest and famous skits, as well as interviews with those performers who have been inspired and influenced by the red-hot redhead, including Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Paul Rodriquez, Lily Tomlin and Dick Van Dyke. Some of the guests will surprise you, such as Antonio Banderas, Andy Garcia and Larry King. [One interesting sidenote: Roseanne Barr Arnold makes an appearance, yet in past interviews, Arnold was quick to boast about how much she did not love Lucy. Time for penance, Rosie?] Original "I Love Lucy" writers Madelyn Pugh Davis, Bob Carroll Junior and Bob Schiller, as well as other crew members, shed some insider insights into the Lucy legend. Desi Arnaz's genius is also honored, with a look at his Cuban
background and influence on Latin music in the United States. Latin music sensation does a knock-'em dead "Babalu," on a stylized set so reminiscent of The Tropicana. Perhaps most touching is the visit Lucie Arnaz and Desi Junior make to Lucy's birthplace, Jamestown, New York ... it is Desi's first visit, and the camera doesn't shy away from the emotional experience. Add to that Desi and Lucie singing "Patria" ("Homeland"), a tune
especially written for the special, with multi-Grammy winner Auturo Sandoval on trumpet. Just marvelous!

5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST collection of The Lucy Show out there!.......2007-05-08

The Lucy Show has been available on DVD for years. You can usually find the DVDs in Dollar Stores or bargain bins. Generally, there are 2 to 8 episodes on each disc. I have spent years trying to collect as many episodes of this show on DVD as I could. Scouring these terrible quality DVDs, trying to figure out which episodes I had and which ones I needed, I came to the conclusion that there seemed to be just a small number of Lucy Shows available. From that small amount, these independently owned, far from perfect DVD companies just seem to pick episodes at random to release.

Finally, I stumbled upon this collection and realized that these 30 episodes are all that is available of The Lucy Show on DVD at this point. I purchased this set, hoping that the quality was good enough that I could get rid of my old scattershot Lucy Show DVDs and replace them with this small, comprehensive 3-disc set. Lo and behold, I was right! Out of all the different DVD releases I have found of the Lucy Show, this one is by far the best. Not only does it offer EVERY EPISODE that is available to the public (as of this writing), but it is also by FAR the best in terms of picture and sound quality. Now, don't get me wrong, the picture and sound are FAR from perfect; these public domain episodes will probably never look as good as the official I Love Lucy and Here's Lucy releases, which are pristine. Quality is perfectly acceptable, however, and definitely watchable. Until Paramount, or whoever owns the rights to this series, officially releases it season by season on DVD, this is the best we Lucy fans can get. Check out some of the other reviews for lists of the episodes; I see no need to take up space with that here since previous reviewers have already done it. Just know that the HILARIOUS episode Viv Visits Lucy is here on disc 3 and it is worth the price of the set by itself!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ANY REAL COLLECTOR OF LUCY TV SHOWS AND MEMORABILIA. IT IS THE BEST WE HAVE FOR NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Best sitcom of all time.......2007-03-18

"The Lucy Show" is the best sitcom of all time and is much underrated. We've all been I Love Lucy'd to death but by the time this show came around Lucille Ball had achieved perfection. It's all here...slapstick, hilarity, physical comedy. For fans of this show you will love it. If you have never seen it you will fall in love with it.

5 out of 5 stars "The Lucy Show" Not digitally remastered, but the best set so far.......2007-01-03

Deciding which Lucy Show set is the best set on Amazon at the best price, look no further this is the set to buy because you get it all. This set is the cheapest and you get more episodes! Why? I don't know.

This set contains all 30 epiodes that have been released on dvd, because there has only been 30 episodes that have been put out on dvd so far and that is what you get here is the complete shows. I wish they would start making them by the Season's and hopefully they will soon, so that we can own all of the shows in a digitally remastered version.

The quality of these dvd's are ok and they are not the worse that I have seen of "The Lucy Show" but they are no where near remastered. Amazon has several sets of "The Lucy Show" dvd's but this one is defintely the best set to buy, as some dvd's on here you only get 8 episodes for more than this costs and the quality is not better than this set. Don't get ripped off! Again you get every episode that is out on the market of "The Lucy Show" for a very low cost at a pretty good quality. I was very impressed with these shows when I got them home!! I almost didn't pay attention while ordering online and I would have bought the 8 episodes for fifeteen bucks which costs more than this set and you get less episodes, it is also for sale on Amazon as others that are not as good as this set.

This collection also has my favorite episode where Lucy and Viv put in a shower and get locked in and the water fills up, this is a laugh out loud fun episode! You will get some of both The Lucy and the kids episodes and the Lucy and Mr.Mooney episodes! Here are all the great episodes that come in this set, I am still amazed at this great price on Amazon for all the episodes that are included.

2 out of 5 stars Until they get it right . . ........2006-07-31

The Lucy Show will probably be released on DVD in season packages someday. At this time what is available is a ridiculous number of `best of' collections. This dirt-cheap collection is one option, if you want a large dose of the wacky redhead. Unfortunately the video quality is very poor, comparable to bad VHS. Images are blurry, flat and oversaturated. While the quality is horrible, you do get 30 episodes on 3 DVD's for a low price.

For fans, the episodes should bring back some warm memories. Lucy had wonderful chemistry with her costars, having worked with them before. Spunky Vivian Vance was a comic genius in her own right. Though sometimes a reluctant participant, Viv still found herself taking part in Lucy's nuttiest schemes. Gale Gordon was wonderful as Lucy's boss, Mr. Mooney. Beneath the vanity and gruff bluster, you always knew was a pretty good guy. Gordon seemed to really enjoy over the top, physical comedy. Later, quirky Mary Jane Croft replaced Viv as Lucy's sidekick.

Though no `best of' collection will satisfy every fan, most of these episodes are among the more memorable ones. The problem here is that the emphasis is a bit too heavy towards the later episodes in the series. Just two are from the period when Viv and Lucy's kids were on the show. The episodes from the early years are almost entirely omitted. A little more balance would have been nice. The standout episodes are:

Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower. Always a `do it yourselfer', Lucy and Viv attempt to save money by installing a shower. Needless to say, the project is an overflowing disaster. A truly classic Lucy and Viv misadventure.

Lucy meets John Wayne - Few but Lucy could get `The Duke' to appear on a TV sitcom. Lucy disrupts production on movie set, contributing the immortal line `Pushing up daisies', before being asked to leave.

Main Street USA - A celebration of America's small towns, Lucy leads the fight to preserve a way of life.

Lucy Gets Caught in the Draft - Victim of a draft board mix up, `Lou C Carmichael' is told to report for Army induction.

Lucy Meets Robert Goulet - Lucy enters a friend in a Robert Goulet look alike contest, submitting a life-sized cowboy photo.

Lucy Gets Jack Benny's Account: The famous funny man was a close friend and frequent guest on Lucy's various projects. This episode plays up Benny's reputation as a compulsive tightwad.

Lucy Meets the Berles: In this classic, Lucy gets hired as Uncle Miltie's housekeeper. Overhearing Berle rehearsing a script with lovely Ruta Lee, Lucy believes that he is cheating on his wife, and takes action.

Lucy the Bean Queen - Never one to pass up a good deal, Lucy takes advantage of a double your money back refund offer on canned beans, to raise cash to buy furniture. Aided by Mary Jane, Lucy corners the local canned bean market.

The numerous `best of' collections for The Lucy Show often feature the same episodes, so compare them carefully before you buy. In this case, weigh the poor quality against the low price for 30 episodes. Lucy's fans might also want to look at the compilation for Here's Lucy, which features 24 remastered episodes, bonus material, and extensive commentaries by Lucy's kids, Lucille Arnaz Luckinbill and Desi Arnaz Jr. Very well done, this set is fabulous. Hopefully both The Lucy Show, and Here's Lucy will be available in full season sets of similar quality someday, and make the current best of collections superfluous.

4 out of 5 stars My Lucy Review.......2006-04-22

This collection was great! I really thought I was going to end up with a terrible collection. However, the picture and sound quality was awesome! The reason I thought this was going to be a terrible collection is because I have purchased other collections from this company and the picture and sound was distorted. Anyway, if you love Lucy, and we all do, then this collection is definitely for you.

2 out of 5 stars Please release the entire series, not all of these collections........2006-07-24

I have a couple of the Lucy collections, and they are a lot of fun; however, they are random selections and Lucy's work deserves complete, season-by-season collections, with extras!

      5 out of 5 stars Laugh a minute.......2006-11-26

Not sure why everyone is k'vetching. I've got the set and the picture and audio are perfect. The shows are hilarious and if you're a Lucy fan you're going to love it.

1 out of 5 stars Worst video quality on a DVD I've ever seen!.......2006-10-01

I bought these singly for $5.00 a piece from a bargain bin. They simply are unwatchable. Do not waste your money on these DVDs from Delta or Laserlight. They are complete garbage!

1 out of 5 stars I want the Connetticut (sp) shows.......2006-04-30

I am trying to find the series runs of the Danfield, CT days with Viv, Lucy, her kids, Cris and Jerry, and Viv's son. I would love to have the Christmas episodes. PPPPPPLLLLLLLLLEEEEEAAASSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEE quit boxing the same old ones and calling it The Lucy Show. I would love to have all of the seasons starting with the Danfield days to the California days, but in sequence!!!!!Also, I would love to have the whole Here's Lucy Seasons.

1 out of 5 stars POOR DVD NOT WORTH THE EXHORBITANT PRICE HERE!!!.......2005-08-20

I bought this DVD collection and was very, very disappointed. Not only because of the high price, but because the transfers are poor and the episodes are NOT intact. There are several scenes missing in each episodes. Any true Lucy fan knows this. The choice of episodes here are also not the best. One of the worst episodes "Lucy the Fight Manager" with Don Rickles (an annoying presence), has NOT ONE funny moment in the entire episode. Save your money until the people in charge of putting out "The Lucy Show" decide to put it out season by season in a complete, remastered, decent quality product.

      3 out of 5 stars Question?.......2005-03-18

Anyone know if the episodes featuring Ethel Merman and Joan Crawford will ever make it to DVD? Have they already been released? If so, which set(s) do they appear?

This Lucy disk has kept me laughing since the time I saw it. Lucille Ball performs wonderfully as usual in her setting. Anytime I'm down, I watch this disk, and it always lifts my spirits. I can almost recite the lines, but the lightheartedness is catching. I garauntee satisfaction with this movie.
