4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Set.......2007-03-21

Despite the packaging - (disks pilled on top of each other so to get at the bottom disk you have to first remove the ones on top.) Very inconvientient to manage. Because of the packiaging I had to rate the set as a 4, but if I was just rating the transfers themselves I would have given it a 5. This is the best transfer of the movies included that I have ever seen. My Favorite Brunette and Road to Bali were especially good - video sharp and clear - sound acceptible for movies of this age. The color on Bali was especially good - others I've seen had very poor, washed out colors. I have been completely happy with this set and would not hesitate to recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Bob Hope Movie Collection.......2007-01-18

I enjoyed the movies but the case it came in was really terrible so many disc's in a very badly designed holder. I am afraid they will become scratched!

4 out of 5 stars Great Set---Bad Packaging.......2007-01-17

If you're a fan of Bob Hope-then this is a great buy. Some Classics here including The Lemon Drop Kid, Seven Little Foys, 2 Road Movies ( Rio & Bali ) plus some of Hope's later-and lesser efforts, i.e. How to Commit Marriage etc.
Though not a fan of these later movies they're still interesting to watch, but it's the earlier stuff that makes this set well worth owning-and the price cannot be beaten.
The only drawback is that because of the budget price-tag the set is presented with five double-sided discs virtually stacked on top of each other making them easily damaged if not careful.
However, having said that, I'm very happy with this package at such a bargain price. Highly recommended.

MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE: Ronnie Jackson is a baby photographer who gets framed for murder. A mysterious femme fatale (Dorothy Lamour) asks him to locate her missing uncle, mistaking Ronnie for the gumshoe detective Sam McCloud. This detective genre spoof also stars horror legends Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney.
ROAD TO BALI: In an attempt to avoid disastrous marriage proposals, two entertainers leave Melbourne and begin working as divers. Their work takes them to a tropical island - Bali, where they meet a bombshell princess and, forgetting the mess they barely avoided, vie with each other for her favours.

5 out of 5 stars Hope in his prime.......2007-06-12

Some of the gags would be timlier and better understoon if this was the late 1940s. All the same, this is one of Hope's best comedies and shows why he is an icon among comedians and comic actors. Amazingly, although he was already in his early forties when he made this classic comedy, he would continue to entertain for almost another 60 years.

Baby boomers who only remember Hope as that "square guy" their parents watched on NBC in the 1960s and 1970s can get a true appreciation of Hope's talents in this film. For Gen'X'ers and Gen Y'ers, who may know little or nothing of Hope, this film is an excellent introduct.

3 out of 5 stars Good Bod Hope Comedy.......2007-05-15

Good but not great. Typical Bob Hope. I think 3.5 stars would be right

5 out of 5 stars "You see, I wanted to be a detective too. It only took brains, courage, and a gun... and I had the gun. ".......2006-06-26

The film opens in San Quentin, with the warden granting the imprisoned Ronnie Jackson the privelege of telling his story to a bevy of reporters before he is executed. As Ronnie spins his tale, the camera pans back in time to San Francisco as Ronnie plies his baby photography trade. Ronnie has always wanted to be a part of the McCloud Detective Agency. He gets a chance when McCloud is away and the Baroness Carlotta Montay assumes Ronnie is a real private eye and hires him to search for her missing husband (later, she changes it to a missing uncle). Soon, Ronnie is nose-deep in side-splitting danger, mysterious maps, escapades in a brooding mansion and a shady sanitorium, and potentially crazy brunettes.

With this 1947 thriller-comedy, Bob Hope is back in perilous surroundings. But, this time, his allegiance is shifted from his favorite blonde, Madeleine Carroll, to his favorite brunette, Dorothy Lamour. The look of this film is very dark, with many scenes taking place at night or in very dim locations. Everyone but Bob plays it straight and, if not for Bob's constant barrage of humor, this easily could have been a typical film noir. As it is, old Ski-nose zanily spins plenty of detective cliches.

Dorothy Lamour teams up again with familiar co-star Bob in this "Road"-less enterprise and makes the most of her sarong-free femme fatale role. There's a certain comfort level between Dorothy and Bob that translates very well onto the film. But just when you think this movie is Crosby-bereft, guess who has a cameo somewhere in the film? Charles Dingle, Frank Puglia and John Hoyt have nice supporting roles, with Lon Chaney Jr. and the great but creepy Peter Lorre rounding off the cast nicely. Alan Ladd also has a tiny but amusing cameo.

At this stage of his career, Bob Hope had already perfected his screen persona of cowardly, self-deprecating funnyman. As usual, the jokes come in fast and furious, in strafe-like fashion. My Favorite Brunette is yet another excellent showcase for Bob's natural timing and hilarious one-liners.

Ironically, the funniest line of the movie is uttered not by Bob Hope, but by a state trooper (threatening Hope): "If you bother us again, I'll personally punch you in the nose so hard it will look like other peoples' noses." The second funniest line is said by Bob Hope as he reaches up into a chandelier and pulls out a champagne bottle: "Aha! Ray Milland's been here!" (If you don't get that, check out The Lost Weekend.)

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad DVD........2006-03-22

A wonderful movie, but the DVD quality is truly bad. First, the opening credits are cut off of both sides! Which means that the scenes are also badly trimmed. Second, the picture quality is faded and grainy. The film splices show and make the picture jump. Third, the sound is horrible, low and fuzzy.
Other classic movies from this era which I own are in pristine condition. I can only conclude that the original print was in poor shape and that the transfer to DVD was very poorly done. 5 stars content, 1 star quality: rating 3 stars. This is the version released by Madacy.

4 out of 5 stars A little too cynical for my tastes.......2005-10-03

I agree this film is too close to being a real crime drama. I don't care for the death lovers who want so badly to see Ronnie Jackson (Hope) get lynched. That part of the movie always bothered me. But it is only a movie! As most of the film
is told in flashback you can't be sure that the events took place actually just as being described. So if it is already stereotypical that can be why.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best from two of the best.......2005-05-23

How's this for a double helping of classic comedy from two of America's most revered entertainers? Arguably, His Girl Friday and My Favorite Brunette feature the best of both Cary Grant and Bob Hope, respectively.

With Howard Hawks in the director's chair and Cary Grant in the lead role, you're pretty much guaranteed to have a good time. His Girl Friday comes at you a mile a minute, with dialogue that starts out at break-neck speed and never slows down and more humorous moments than you can find time to laugh at. It's an unusual romantic comedy, given the fact that Cary Grant's character is a little less than noble (he is a rather ruthless newspaper man, after all) and the nice guy in the picture is lucky to finish at all, but there's still something endearing about the whole relationship between Walter Burns (Grant) and his former ace reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), who also happens to be his ex-wife. Hildy is due to get married in less than 24 hours, and Burns is desperate to win her back - for the newspaper as well as himself. This battle of the sexes turns into one of the most impressive battles of wits the big screen has ever seen, and the whole wild and crazy story makes for an extraordinary experience.

Grant and Russell demonstrate remarkable chemistry together, which is a necessity given the fact that their characters are divorced and know each other's ways so well. Poor Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy), Hildy's mild-mannered fiancé, is overwhelmed by the charm and manipulations of the remarkable Walter Burns. Even Hildy falls prey to his spontaneously elaborate schemes, finding herself agreeing to do one last story before leaving the newspaper business for good. That story, about a timid little man guilty of shooting a policeman whose forthcoming execution is being exploited as a triumph of law and order over anarchists and Reds, explodes in the hours leading up to the scheduled hanging, as the murderer escapes and ultimately provides the paper with a scoop that even the imaginative Burns could hardly have engineered on his own.

His Girl Friday is all about the dialogue. There are more words spoken during this ninety-minute film than you will find in any handful of other motion pictures. Grant and Russell really are remarkable, as most scenes go on for many minutes without either actor breaking stride. All of the minor characters jump in and out at the same unstoppable pace, and many are the times multiple characters are speaking to different people simultaneously. This is nothing less than an elaborate circus of vocalization, and it is all you as the viewer can do to keep up with everything that is going on. Burns and Hildy may have little time to think, but that doesn't stop them from unleashing words of great wit, innuendo, sarcasm, comic genius, and even a couple of in-jokes one on top of the other. Meanwhile, the script becomes much more complicated than I expected, as the murderer awaiting the gallows escapes, the corruption of the police and local government is made manifest, a woman tries to kill herself, and Hildy's husband-to-be and his mother find themselves victimized by Burns' ruthless schemes to keep Hildy right where she belongs.

His Girl Friday is an inspired example of moviemaking at its best, a classic that demands multiple viewings and loses none of its edge over the ensuing decades since its 1940 release. Not only is the film a real hoot to watch, it's a strange sort of pleasure to sit back and enjoy a host of extraordinary actors performing at the very tops of their games.

In My Favorite Brunette (1947), Bob Hope plays a baby photographer who dreams of becoming a detective. When an exotic brunette by the name of Carlotta Montay (Dorothy Lamour) mistakes him for a detective, he decides to throw caution to the wind and handle her case himself. A detective only needs smarts, courage, and a gun, and he has a gun; he has even invented a camera that takes pictures through keyholes. Carlotta says her husband is missing, although she later changes her story to say it is her uncle. When Jackson comes out to the house, he meets the missing uncle and starts to believe Carlotta is rowing upstream without a paddle, but Ronnie Jackson (Bob Hope) is not one to leave a gorgeous brunette in distress. To him, being a detective basically involves making time with beautiful female clients. Soon, as there really are all sorts of thug-induced shenanigans going on, Jackson is in over his head, eventually finding himself framed for a murder he didn't commit.

My Favorite Brunette features vintage Bob Hope comedy. He has one-liners for even the darkest of occasions; he even complains jokingly about his last meal when he is locked up in the hoosegow awaiting execution. Dorothy Lamour's character remains serious and reserved throughout, but this doesn't slow Bob Hope down, as he quite easily carries the movie's load of comedy single-handedly. As always with Hope, the comedy comes out in so many ways, particularly in the facial expressions; I don't think the man could ever have been not funny if he tried. The ending of this movie screams deus ex machina, but it really doesn't matter. My Favorite Brunette features an hour and a half of Bob Hope comedy in its most concentrated and effective form, guaranteeing a ton of laughs for anyone with a funny bone in his/her body. There's even a very special dessert at the end of this comedic buffet, as Bing Crosby puts in a quick but noteworthy appearance.

5 out of 5 stars MARENGO COMPLETES RESTORATION.......2006-02-15

Marengo Films has just completed our second restoration of My Favorite Brunette. The older version of this film has been replaced and we believe our customers will welcome the change.

Our company spent thousands of dollars last year replacing several our our company's early prints with better products. DVD software, sound design software and editing software has changed since we first encoded this particular film. We have actively used these new tools and new prints to upgrade our product line.

We believe our customers will be thrilled with both prints.

We appreciate your business and as always we guarantee satisfaction of our products.

          Best regards,

4 out of 5 stars THESE TITLES DESERVE MAJOR RESTORATION.......2006-01-21

My Favorite Brunette is an extremely well acted and funny movie. The image/sound quality of the films on this Marengo DVD is better than average and the great material makes any defect less noticeable.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Bob Hope.......2003-08-28

It is a joy to watch Bob Hope anytime. He was a great American and both of these films are really fun to watch. Road to Bali is an excellent print and My Favorite Brunette is obviously a little less so, but it is still a very nice print... probably a "B". I found both films up to par, the studio has cleaned the sound on them and for the money this DVD is a very nice bargan.

2 out of 5 stars Daniel J. Filice was right.......2003-03-29

I bought the DVD on the recommendation of the person who blessed Marengo Films. She must have been in their employ. The print from which my old Goodtimes tape of "My Favorite Brunette" was made was much cleaner. It's the one I'll keep.

          4 out of 5 stars This disc is a 50/50 proposition........2003-01-28

I'm a huge Bob Hope fan. I have many of his films on tape and DVD. "My Favorite Brunette" was always one of my favorite Bob Hope films. I have an old tape version of "Brunette" that he personally signed for me many years ago. After reading reviews of how great Morengo Films did with this DVD, I readily bought this disc. I was really excited about the prospect of a "Brunette" transfer that would finally be better than the cruddy verison I have on tape or the copy I taped off of The Disney Channel. I can't say how disappointed I was in "Brunette" on this DVD. I swear the film must have been run through a dust bowl before it was transferred. My Disney Channel copy was ten times better, so either a better print exists somewhere or Disney spent time and money making their copy much cleaner. Makes me wonder how much worse the other DVD releases are of "Brunette." "Bali" was just fine on this DVD. Oh well, at least I don't need to rewind a tape.
