5 out of 5 stars Way to go Disney!.......2007-07-02

The picture quality and sound quality of this movie are amazing on Blu-Ray! Way better than I had hoped, I show it to anyone who does not know what Blu-Ray is or ask me is there a difference on Blu-Ray!
The Uncompressed audio track is a Hundred times better than Dolby Digital, the movie comes alive!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-07-01

I must say I like the second part better than the first one. The story and characters were amazing. Uncompressed sound is heaven so use a surround sound system! The graphics were pretty good and overall it's a great movie to watch and to collect on Blu ray.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray Heaven.......2007-06-30

The video transfer on this BD is definitely one that would be classed as reference material. I have watched it a few times now with my PS3 set to 1080P feeding my JVC HD1 1080P projector and the picture quality is the bees knees.

Even with my ageing Denon AVR-2802 I can quite clearly hear the quality of the audio. I am expecting to take delivery of the new Onkyo 875 in the next few weeks which I am sure will give me a better idea of how good the audio transfer really is. Suffice to say that with my current equipment I believe the audio transfer is up there with the best available.

Product Description

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.

Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars awesome movie.......2007-07-02

awesome sequel to the first one! i love the special effects in this one with Davy Jones and the Kraken! also, jack sparrow was hilarious as always! :D

5 out of 5 stars Another great movie to add to your collection.......2007-06-27

This movie had me sitting on the edge of my chair throughout it. Once again, all of the cast plays an outstanding role. The whole object of this movie is to get the keys from Davy Jones to get to Dead Mans Chest. Its an awesome movie. I recomend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Stands alone!.......2007-06-27

FUN! I always look at sequels from at least two angles: as a sequel and as a movie without a predesessor. This movie can easily stand alone.

5 out of 5 stars With a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum - this show's a lotta fun!.......2007-06-26

I finally sat down and watched this DVD - I have no idea why I waited so long, I'm a Johnny Depp fan and love the way he lives and breaths his characters. He is especially believable as Jack Sparrow - lovable despite his tendency to think predominantly of his own well-being or how to line his pockets.

A good bit of time has passed since the previous movie and the East India Trade company has moved into the area; bringing with it the detestable Lord Beckett, who has Will arrested on his wedding day and drags him to the site - where Elizabeth forlornly sits in the rain, in her wedding dress - in chains. And proceeds to arrest Elizabeth as well. What does he want? He wants Jack Sparrow's compass and he's willing to make a deal to get it - he will send Will out to find Sparrow and get the compass in exchange for a pardon for Sparrow and leniency for Will and Elizabeth.

The movie has amazing special effects - like the first movie, the crew of the antagonistic ship is completely crewed by "monsters," requiring extensive special effects. Personally, I liked the special effects in this movie better - I was fascinated by the constant movement on many of the characters. The kraken was also pretty cool, especially toward the end where you get to see the main body and mouth of the "beastie," as Jack puts it.

This movie does end on a bit of a cliff-hanger, with a bit of a surprise thrown at us right at the end that I certainly didn't see coming. I will definitely be looking forward to watching "At World's End" once it is released to DVD. A recommend from me for anyone who enjoys a good adventure flick, some fun sword fights (love the water-mill scene - shades of a hamster wheel, anyone??) and terrific special effects. Not for the people who prefer to be intellectually challenged or go to "theatres" to see "films" - this is definitely a movie ;-) Get it, watch it, enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As The First But Still Fun To Watch........2007-06-25

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest is not as good as the first but still worth watching. The story is full of holes and slightly hard to follow at times but the acting is still great. I just cannot get enough of Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow as a flamboyant pirate. If you saw the first movie you need to see this one. If you havent seen the first yet, go back and view that one before this movie.

This disappointment from Jim Jarmusch stars Johnny Depp in a mystery-Western about a 19th-century accountant named William Blake, who spends nearly all his money getting to a hellish mud town in the old West and ends up penniless and doomstruck in the wilderness. A benevolent if goofy Native American (Gary Farmer) takes an interest in guiding Blake on a quest for identity in his earthly journey, but the film is really just a string of endless shtick about inbred woodsmen, dumb lawmen, and a trio of irritable killers. With Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Alfred Molina, and a noodling soundtrack by Neil Young. --Tom Keogh

Description

Johnny Depp (CHOCOLAT) delivers a remarkable performance in this highly acclaimed tale of adventure and intrigue in the wild, wild west! A young man in search of a fresh start, William Blake (Depp) embarks on an exciting journey to a new town ... never realizing the danger that lies ahead. But when a heated love triangle ends in double murder, Blake finds himself a wanted man, running scared -- until a mysterious loner teaches him to face the dangers that follow a "dead man." With an outstanding supporting cast including Gabriel Byrne (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) and Robert Mitchum (CAPE FEAR), and a sizzling soundtrack, DEAD MAN is another motion picture triumph from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!.......2007-06-19

If you are a real free thinker than this movie is for you. If you need to have everything scripted and compartmentalized than this movie is not for you. The story line and soundtrack are a perfect marriage. Watch this movie when you are not distracted and can concentrate on the subtle dialogue ... Some pretty cool stuff here. Great characters. This film plays itself out like a hazy dream. Not everybody's cup of team, but it sure is mine. I can't think of another film that approaches this dream state.

4 out of 5 stars Dead Man.......2007-06-11

Johnny Depp. I have never been disappointed by Johnny Depp on the screen. Not an action packed thriller, but if you don't "PAUSE" before leaving the room and don't rewind you'll miss something.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorites.......2007-05-16

I also think that Amazon should be ashamed of allowing their reviewer to give such a negative review. I can see if the guy had given an abundance of details to support the reasons why he hated the film so much, but to rattle off a couple of generalities about "Dead Man" is atrocious of him.

I loved "Dead Man." I just saw "Pirates of the Carribean 2," and I'm glad that great actors like Johnny Depp are allowed to flex their creative muscle in real roles instead of cookie-cutter Hollywood roles. I do admit to anyone interested in viewing "Dead Man" that so far, the majority of people I attempted to introudce the film to did not like it. This movie is made for a very particular audience, and I'm not sure if even the director can pin-point exactly who this audience is.

I loved everything about this movie, even the black & white, and I normally hate black & white movies. But "Dead Man" in color would have killed so much of the effect. I loved the characters, like Nobody, and the ruthless bounty hunters. Johnny Depp plays one of the most tragic individuals introduced to audiences in a long time.

This movie could not have been better. I consider it to be a masterpiece of art.

5 out of 5 stars Not a single extraneous shot.......2007-05-06

I just finished watching this movie again and was really surprised to see the negative review given by Tom Keogh of Amazon (whoever he is). If Tom can only describe the superficial events of the story without recognizing the broader themes, then he is really missing out. I am always amazed at how much storytelling punch Jim Jarmusch manages to pack into so few scenes- minimalism at its best. He encapsulates the human experience in just a few short strokes- the innocence of the young as they make their way out into the world, taking the first long journey alone, seeing new & strange lands/people, encountering the decadence of the city, treachery in big business, enduring ridicule, sharing fragile dreams with another and seeing those dreams slip away. In the end, William Blake is transformed from innocence to maturity and understands the necessity and tragedy of it. Chances are pretty good that Tom Keogh did not understand that the dead baby deer was a symbol of William Blake's lost innocence; much less some of the other metaphors presented here. A great, great movie.

5 out of 5 stars my FAVORITE MOVIE!.......2007-05-03

What else can I say. I loved it start to finnish.

Bolstered by the success of 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, the Resident Evil movies and the hit remake of his own Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented with Land of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985's Day of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classic Night of the Living Dead: Zombies (also known as "stenches" for their rotting odor) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter of Suspiria director Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired, Land of the Dead benefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie, Land of the Dead delivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars fun on a bun in the sun with a gun.......2007-05-30

I'll preface this by saying that I just paid a rather embarrassing amount for an enormous Land of the Dead poster (we're talking six feet high, here). That's just one example. I guess you could say I like this film just a little bit.

First, the bad: many people will NOT like the ending. A character makes a decision that has caused no end of controversy. I also winced a little, as I surely would not have done the same thing, but it is something decidedly different from other films of its ilk. Other characters make decisions that, again, many of us would not have made, given the circumstances. Some will dislike zombies with weapons and the concept of "thinking" zombies to begin with. This seems to tie in with "Day", which is also much reviled in some circles for a lot of the same reasons. I completely understand the reasoning behind it all, which is why I'm listing these aspects as flaws.

That aside... the special effects are fantastic, the atmosphere is perfect and the characters and dialogue are fun. I love Charlie so much I could just die, twice. If you've seen "Land" and it's your only exposure to Robert Joy, you owe it to yourself to seek out more of the films he appears in. He is a highly underrated talent.

In some ways, it may not be the strongest of the "Dead" films, but there's no denying that it's fun to watch. Plenty of gore, cool-looking zombies, and cinematography that sails right past "good" and plops squarely upon "so sexy I could eat it".

Also, and it has little to do with the film as a whole, but Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are just delightful as the zombies chained to the swingset in the photo booth. I want to pinch their rotten cheeks.

I can't get much gushier than that. I love "Land" so much that it's shameful, and for the most part I try to keep it to myself, since so many people seem to despise it with a passion that far outstrips my own. I know not everyone will agree, but hey, maybe the filmmakers would be glad to know how happy they've made at least one person. Which is a lot. Huge amounts of happy. It's just good slasher zombie fun with heart and guts (and entrails. which gives it extra guts, just for good measure.)

Three cheers for Romero! I've still not entirely lost faith. Here's hoping that "Diary" will be as much of a joyride.

5 out of 5 stars Romero evolves!.......2007-05-17

Many people, Romero fans and average zombie fans alike, have come out against this movie. "It's dumb" "That's not what would happen?" "It doesn't make sense?"

From one perspective, the opinions are justified. From another side, its blasphemous to speak out against the father of the modern zombie movie.

"Land of the Dead" provides a unique evolution of the zombie movie from the founding father himself. The story is massively gory, with zombie feasts spread throughout. One is reminiscent of the project apartment scene from the original "Dawn...", but jacked up about 10 notches from its '70's counterpart.

In regards to the zombies "thinking/feeling", many have forgotten that Romero has touched on the exact same subject in the original "Day..." with the unforgetable "Bub". This only takes that theme and builds on it to a shockingly beautiful crescendo. Eugene Clark is brilliant in his portrayal of the "Gas Station Zombie", Dennis Hopper is fantastic as the fat cat capitalist ignoring the problem, John Leguizamo provides a sympathetic protagonist against Asia Argento and Simon Baker.

There is plenty of gore and zombies getting shot with high-powered weaponry, including "Dead Reckoning", the original name of the movie. There is also plenty of overt commentary on American society. No Romero movie would be complete without it.

There is also an outstanding scene with a mass of zombies that rivals any mass zombie rising in a graveyard.

The movie is excellent, and one must approach it with an open mind.

Trust George.

4 out of 5 stars "I have bad dreams...just look at me, you can tell I have terrible dreams...".......2007-05-12

While George Romero's third film in the "Dead" trilogy, "Day Of The Dead," gained an increasing degree of critical acclaim in the years following its theatrical release, "Land Of The Dead" feels more like the natural finale to the series. It's not a "horror film" in the traditional sense...more like an apocalyptic science fiction piece out of the pages of "Heavy Metal" magazine in its peak years. At the center of the action is rich characterization, with a cast of oddballs and misfits adding up to a satisfying whole: Simon Baker's "Riley Denbo," John Leguizamo's "Cholo," Dennis Hopper's villain "Kauffman," Asia Argento's magnificent anti-heroine "Slack," Robert Joy's "Charlie," the loyal sidekick to Riley, and Pedro Miguel Arce's understated powerhouse "Pillsbury." In terms of special effects, there are some things in "Land of the Dead" you haven't seen before. I won't offer spoilers, but trust me...you'll see new things. There's also a reliance on CGI computer effects...discussed by Romero in the disc's extras...that are hit and miss, but were necessary evils due to the film's budget. I've found that repeated viewings of the film reveal subtle layers and nuances. "Night Of The Living Dead" and "Dawn Of The Dead" were trend-setting, rule-breaking films. "Land Of The Dead" is simply a solid Romero film. For this viewer, that's good enough. Look for cameo appearances by the "Shaun Of The Dead" guys as zombies.

2 out of 5 stars The worst of the bunch.......2007-05-11

I can't believe that this movie was directed by the same man who did the previous "Dead" movies which were so awesome. The first thirty minutes of this were okay but then it just went down from there. Mr. Romero, to save face, please make another attempt at a decent zombie flick. You don't want this last film to be what you're known for!

Few movies, documentary or otherwise, capture the relaxed exuberance of Dave Chappelle's Block Party. This is Chappelle's first project since his show on Comedy Central received so much popular and critical attention that he apparently had a psychological meltdown and fled to Africa to escape. You can still see a hint of weariness and wariness in his eyes--but even more you can see his relief to be launching a project that bears no expectations. Funded by his own money and free to all who attended, Chappelle set up a secret concert location in Brooklyn and pulled together a musical lineup of stellar acts, including Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Mos Def, Jill Scott, Common, the Roots, Dead Prez, and the reunion of the Fugees, all of whom give vibrant performances. But Block Party doesn't just capture the show; at least a third of the movie is Chappelle wandering around Brooklyn or the Ohio neighborhood where he lives and interacting with the people he meets, many of whom he gives free tickets for the show. These scenes, combined with footage of the performers rehearsing or just gassing around before the show, offer a sense that for Chappelle performing is just an extension of his everyday life; that he takes just as much pleasure from goofing around with one person as he does goofing around in front of hundreds or thousands. Putting together this event becomes a unique self-portrait as well as an experience that rejuvenated Chappelle. If you surrender to the vitality of the show and Chappelle's loose comic jazz, you may find it rejuvenating too. --Bret Fetzer

Its more a concert than a comedy video, I was specting more time on air by Chapelle, but the invited singuers are great one. Gotta love soul.....

Dave's Video is really a party & a cool look a the whole production thing

4 out of 5 stars The Chappelle you wernt expecting.......2007-04-26

I really enjoyed seeing a different side to Dave. I agree with most reviewers that this movie is not really funny by any means, but it gave me a new light to the comedian. There is a serious and very respectable side to Mr. Chappelle and i feel he is the next big comedian to hit our generation. I never knew Chappelles understanding and respect for jazz music and his dedication to learning Round Midnight by the great Monk. He brings up almost "almost" a philosophical way of looking at how comedians and musicians intertwine. I enjoyed it, the replay value isn't there though. There was not enough footage of the music performances. It could have been set up into 2 parts i felt, The Concert, and than his little documentary, but it wasnt set up like that. Overall i gained some respect for Dave after seeing this

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could've been there too!.......2007-03-22

It's as if someone downloaded one of my dreams. If I were to wish for a dream movie, this would be it. Not only does it have concert performances by some of my favourite hip-hop and neo-soul artistes ever - Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, The Roots, dead prez, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, just to name a few - it's all presented by my favourite comedian ever (well, maybe apart from Chris Rock), the fantastic Dave Chappelle. The movie was shown on TV here a few weeks ago and after seeing it the once, I just knew I had to see it again and ordered the DVD immediately.

Basically, we get to follow Dave as he returns to his hometown in Ohio to pass out invitations to his block party in Brooklyn, New York, including to an entire college or high school marching band. We get to see how he puts the show together and finally, we get to see the show itself. All the while, Dave peppers the movie here and there with his unique and inimitable humour.

Watching the movie, I was reminded of several things: One, how powerful hip-hop music is and how I need to try and get out and see more concerts before I'm finally too old to do so; Two, how beautiful and talented black people are; And three, how I need to get a couple of CDs added to my collection, particularly Erykah Badu's Worldwide Underground and Cody Chesnutt's The Headphone Masterpiece. I might actually get the soundtrack to the movie while I'm at it.

But more than anything else, I was reminded of the fact that Dave Chappelle is probably one of the funniest, most engaging and most charming comedians of our time. I love him to death. He says it was the "best single day" of his career and I believe him. He really seemed to relish the opportunity to put the show together for people, many of whom might never have had the opportunity to attend such an event.

It was also particularly interesting to see The Fugees on stage but while all three members gave a good performance, Lauryn Hill's heart didn't seem to be in it at all. Later on when she spoke to camera, her eyes just seemed dead.

The DVD has some pretty cool extras. Extended music acts, (you can play the movie either in its original format or with the extended concert performances), A short documentary "The Ohio Players: The Bus Ride", and two others "September in Brooklyn" and "The Making of Block Party".

I can't seem to get the subtitles to work on the main movie though but that's no big thing. I'm so glad I bought this DVD and can already see myself playing it over and over and never getting tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I were there!.......2007-01-19

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. I love just about everything Dave Chappelle does. I loved it soooo much I bought the CD too.

5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable zombie flick.......2007-06-30

As zombie flicks go this one was, in my personal opinion, very thought out and executed. Okay, so you can't really grab someone by the hair and rip their head off along with their spinal chord, but that's what the fiction genre is all about.

If there's going to be a sequel somewhere down the road, I hope it's not by some fly by night 'B' company who just slaps any old thing together.

5 stars for great affects, acting, and all around entertainment.

1 out of 5 stars stupid.......2007-01-20

This movie is so stupid. Ok... Zombies are already dead and that means their brains are not much use for being smart. But for some reason the zombies are trying to be smart. So freakin' stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Darn good zombie flick... with a message!?.......2007-01-05

Land of the Dead is the spiritual successor of Romero's previous Zombie films, ending with Day of the Dead too many years ago.

When I learned they would be using computer generated imagery for some of the special effects, I sort of cringed. Computer created blood and gore effects I've seen in other releases have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I can happily report that with a few exceptions the CG created imagery works really well. The only scene I can think of as being slightly disappointing is the scene involving the zombie in the liquor store. I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone, but I'll leave it at there is a scene that involves some bloody spray that just looked unnatural to me. All of the other effects, such as zombie heads being removed from their bodies and so on looked about as realistic as normal effects. In fact I'd say the scenes that involved disembodied parts worked better this way given that the body parts were real; helped by the creative use of blue/green screen effects.

As with Romero's previous zombie works, this movie can be enjoyed for the gorey simplicity it contains or for those looking for something with a deeper meaning, something that requires some thought, you can glean deeper meanings on many of the things presented here as well. Romero says it best when he calls Dennis Hopper's character the zombie infested world's equivalent of Donald Rumsfeld.

So if you're looking for a film with a creepy atmosphere and plenty of gore, or are looking for an action oriented film with a message, Land of the Dead is worthy of a viewing.

Being given the HD version, as well as the SD version on a single disc is certainly a bonus over purchasing the DVD only version, despite the price difference. I don't have an HD-DVD player yet so my views concentrate on the SD version which looks good (but certainly no replacement for HD) for an SD release.

4 out of 5 stars A fitting sequal for the Dead series.......2007-01-04

Land of the Dead is a very good sequal to the original Dead trilogy. In HD it looks really good plus you get the film in regular definition on the other side which is a very cool thing. The extras are the same as the DVD version and none of them are in HD which is a bummer but 90% of the HD discs out there are like that.

4 out of 5 stars George A. Romero proves that zombies still creep us out.......2006-08-07

We should have known that if George A. Romero was going to go back to the well of the living dead another time he was going to come up with something different. What "George A. Romero's Land of the Dead" (the director's name goes up top so you know this is not merely another remake of one of his zombie films, like last year's "Dawn of the Dead") offers is two variations on the familiar theme. The first is in this brave new world humanity has found a way of perpetuating the old divide between the "haves" and "haves not," even when there are all those zombies out there suggest it should now be "us" versus "them." Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) has set up Fiddler's Green, a luxury high rise on an island between a couple of rivers (think the location of Three River Stadium in Romero's old stomping ground of Pittsburgh even though the movie is shot in Toronto). There the "haves" live while the rest of the island has the "have nots," some of whom are hired as mercenaries to go out into the world and bring back "necessities." Apparently money still matters in the "Land of the Dead," or perhaps people are merely trying to hold on to the old way of life, because the poor are not listening to those advocating going and taking away from the rich.

Consequently, humanity has found a way to survive. You can compare the more active approach of "Land of the Dead" with the mall rats of "Dawn of the Dead," who found a passive means of existence. Kaufman has built Dead Reckoning, a gigantic armored vehicle that leads foraging parties out into the world. These parties are led by Riley (Simon Baker), whose primary goal is getting everybody back alive, which does not always happen. That is because he works with Cholo (John Leguizamo), who has a different idea of necessities, one attuned to the fine tastes of Kaufman. Both men believe they are on their last mission at the start of this 2005 film, Riley because he will have now earned enough to pay for a car to get out of town and Cholo because he believes he has now earned the chance to move on up to Fiddler's Green. Both are wrong and that sets up the conflict to come.

This is where the second variation comes into play. Kaufman not only created a high rise where the "haves" are protected from that "have nots," some of whom actually help the "haves" have even more, but the entire island is zombie proof. This forces Romero to change the zombie part of the equation, and so we are introduced to Big Daddy (Eugene Clark), who runs a gas station and has a moment akin to when the ape looks at the thigh bone in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Just to help us along the voice over at the start of the film warn us that if the zombies ever develop anything approaching rudimentary thinking skills that would be a bad thing, a very bad thing indeed. So, of course, that is what happens. After all, if you can have bad humans, then you can have good zombies (Joss Whedon has convinced me being dead does not make a character inherently bad).

Having a zombie to root for is quite a different experience, but Romero also delivers on the guts and gore when the zombies go into their patented feeding frenzy. The narrative can offer all the sly social satire it wants, we watch these movies to be disgusted by the bloody scenes of cannibalism. The people Romero hires to do makeup and special effects are clearly on the cutting edge when it comes to this type of work. Even when you watch the DVD special features and you see what they are doing in bright light most of it will still creep you out, so the scenes in the film shot at night or in the shadows with the liberal application of blood and other things it is even worse (which is a good thing in a zombie movie).

The bottom line is that Romero delivers just what his fans want with this movie so that there is not a problem with failing to meet expectations. No, "Land of the Dead" is not the best of the bunch, but for my money nothing will surpass the original "Night of the Living Dead." The important thing is that here we are four films into the series, limiting ourselves to just the Romero helmed ones, and the series is certainly going a lot strong than the other comparable horror series, all of which have been abandoned by their creators (which is either a cause or effect). Final Note: Look for Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright of "Shaun of the Dead" fame as the photo booth zombies in one of the classic cameos of the early 21st century.

The way they portrayed Freddy with his mask was just no good. At the time it came out there should have been better effects and costumes though out the movie, overall disappointing but you should still see it if you are a die hard Elm Street fan.

5 out of 5 stars It takes a woman to go farther than a father.......2007-02-15

It takes a woman to bring about this sixth episode. Rachel Talalay revives Freddy and gives him a new dimension. First he is revived through a boy and we may think we are back to the second episode. Wrong. We all start this sixth stage in our trip in a plane and then the nightmare comes. The boy finds himself in a teenage shelter, in other words a prison for teenagers because Freddy's target is the female psychiatrist. They all believe the boy is Freddy's son. Wrong again. The boy is only the caretaker of one mission : bring the female psychiatrist to Springwood which is only two miles away. There Freddy will get three more victims, all boys. He definitely is a male-child molester more than a female-child abuser. But this time, with the help of another psychiatrist, male and black, the woman is going to get into Freddy's head, which is possible because she is his daughter and she has plenty of common recollections with him. She gets him out of the dreamscape in which he is protected and overpowerful and gets him into the real world where he is mortal. The final fight will lead to his absolute annihilation with his own claws and a good old stick of dynamite, his own penetrating and raping tools turned back onto him with the penis-like dynamite stick as a cherry to top it of, and he finally loses his cherry. The film though is more interesting than just that. First it is modern, it has grown up along with the world and we have electronic games, colour TV, consoles of all types, hearing aids and many other modern gadgets. Second it has also followed the growth of teenagers as an age group and the teenagers in the film are from our modern time : they are definitely rebellious, have been marginalized by drugs and many other things, including the abuse from their parents, and are now controled by the police and other judicial institutions for delinquent teenagers. They are at least neurotic and can become psychotic in a minute, in the wink of a dream, when the real world becomes virtual, dreamlike, or even inexistant. But the film enables us to discover Freddy in his real life. He was married and had a daughter and yet at the same time had been the victim of adults and had developed a complete tolerance to any suffering. And here Rachel Talalay plays with us and introduces a blue-beard recollection in Freddy's daughter's discovering her father's torture chamber. Finally the technique used in the film has been updated to all kinds of modern special effects. This sixth episode though wants to be the end of the saga in its title and in its closing scene and song, though the last picture is still one of Freddy himself standing upright on his feet. It is well known that the strongest nightmares are forever and ever and ever again.

4 out of 5 stars a bit of a let down.......2007-02-04

i heard through the grapevine that this was a 3-D movie, which intrigued me. upon purchasing this DVD, i found that this is not the 3-D version. the SFX in this movie bite, but only because they were meant to be in three dimensions.

it is a bit of a lame focal point, but the 3-d glasses play a part in the movie (don't worry, i won't spoil how!) but it would have been better to have both the 3-d and regular versions in this DVD. I then discovered that the Freddy box set has the original 3-d version with special edition glasses, which pissed me off no short of pissing, right after i completed my own 'nightmare' collection... oh well...

at least i got the special edition of the first 'nightmare'

2 out of 5 stars ok, for the money.......2007-01-10

The movie has too many cameo's or how ever it is spelled, I dont like this Freddy or the second Movie the rest our good though.

1 out of 5 stars The Franchise's Dead- The Final Nightmare.......2006-12-29

It is 10 years later (though after what is never mentioned) and Springwood has lost all it's children to Freddy (Robert Englund). Now he is looking for his long lost daughter Maggie (played by Lisa Zane), who as it turns out, is a youth councilor. After many deaths and Maggie goes into Freddy's dreams to discover the secret of destroying him, and brings him out of the dreams and finally kills him, for ever and ever; or at least until the next sequel.

This movie is the absolute pits. I hate to say it, because making movie, no matter good or bad, is hard work. But it just fails on every level. As a horror movie it's a joke; as a fantasy it's dull; and as a comedy (which they could have went for with a quick rewrite) it's just boring with stupid jokes and sight gags that are just too sick to be funny. In part 5 I said Freddy was his own worst enemy, but here he is just another cog in the broken down machine. In life Freddy was a child killer, and yet he never hurt his daughter, easily the kid he had the most opportunity to mess with? Then there was the cameos; Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper (as Freddy's abusive step-father) was OK, at least not annoying. Rosanne and Tom Arnold was way too much for me though. The only saving grace was Yaphet Kotto, who played a psychologist who specializes in dream manipulation, a skill that comes in handy. Lisa Zane was a good actress in "L.A. Law", but here she dose not convince me, or even act surprised with her startling revelation. The dream sequences are the absolute worst of the series, with Freddy riding a broom like the Wicked Witch of the West, or the stupid Nintendo death scene. And oh boy, the 3D sequence. If you don't have the glasses you're going to have a bad headache after watching it.

This movie was so bad on every level that a few years later Wes Craven came back to put the series back on track. This one is for die hard Freddy fans only; one of which I thought I was until Freddy died.

1 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2006-06-19

It was sort of funny...I guess. The people at the Broken Angel House were a trip, for sure. Ha! And I like all types of humor and I watch the Chapelle Show. I laugh at all kinds of people, white, black, hispanic, middle eastern, asian, you name it. We all have our foibles...our eccentricities...our ways...It keeps things interesting and it's always good for a laugh. However, one of the rap groups took it too far. They just kept on with the white bashing which I am prepared to believe was aimed at "the man" and not me personally. It was just a little much, you know? But I will still watch Dave, cuz he's just funny. I'm rich, b*tch!
