They just don't make musicals like this any more. There are some who would be grateful for that--the plot is but a flimsy excuse to string together song and dance numbers. Some of us, however, love big, splashy, overdone musical scenes, of which there are many. Glittering stage numbers showcase a commanding Barbra Streisand as Dolly Levy, a New York matchmaker who can find a mate for anyone. Anyone but herself, that is. Determined to marry wealthy Walter Matthau, she lures him out of Yonkers and sets about wooing him.
Don't worry about the lack of a solid story or Gene Kelly's pedestrian direction. Watch instead for the musical numbers and the lavish costumes. Listen to Jerry Herman's score, and dance around the living room when a sequined Streisand arrives in a club as Louis Armstrong strikes up the title tune for her benefit. (Just pull the shades first.) Based on Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker, Hello, Dolly! won Academy Awards for best sound, art direction, and musical score. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Customer Reviews:
A great musical.......2007-05-21
Although Streisand was a little too young to play the lead she made a note worthy lead. But it was the songs and choreogragphy that made this an excellent movie.
Wonderful Movie.......2007-05-08
I had watched this movie many times on TCM in letterbox. I even recorded it. Amazon offered it at half price so I jump on it. The bonus features are well worth it. This Movie is real. Not a bunch of CGI crap. Appreciate it for what it is. A marvel and masterpiece.
Hello...Dolly fans!.......2007-04-01
"Hey Mr. Armstine...here I am" and i loved this movie. Its got everything a musical should have, and more with barbra in it. Its a recommend for anyone with a song in there hearts.
Dolly Reigns supreme.......2007-03-10
There has been much talk over the years about Streisand being too young for the role. Who cares? This is a Hollywood classic proving some movies will remain popular forever. Fantastixc production numbers, costuming and art direction. Put on your Sunday clothes and check out Dolly. It is a great film. Barbra at her musical best.
Hello Dolly.......2007-03-09
I love Barbra Streisand. She didn't disapoint me with this movie. She is great. I really enjoy this movie and am happy to add it to my DVD library. Highly reccomend.

The Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection consists of the three volumes previously released on DVD plus a never-before-available fourth disc, The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays. The first three discs deliver what the title promises: historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards starting in the 1960s and into the new millennium. Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon performing "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago and "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees; John Raitt singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There"; Alfred Drake singing Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"); a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach performing Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"; and 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow."
The second and third volumes feature newer, fully staged performances that are almost indistinguishable from an actual show, including scenes from splashy, high-energy revivals such as Anything Goes (Patti LuPone and company performing the title tune) and Guys and Dolls (the fabulous "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat"), and new shows such as Grand Hotel (Michael Jeter and Brent Barrett in a gloriously exuberant "Take a Glass Together"), Les Miserables ("One Day More"), La Cage aux Folles (George Hearn solo and with a chorus line in drag in "I Am What I Am"), Ragtime (the opening number), and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Kristin Chenoweth's "My New Philosophy"). The new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals are also represented by the likes of the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now").
The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays features 19 of the dramatic and comedy excerpts showcased on the Tony Awards telecasts between 1969 and 2001. From 1969 are James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in The Great White Hope and Art Carney in Lovers, and other performances include Maggie Smith and Margaret Tyzack in Lettice and Lovage (1990), John Lithgow and B.D. Wong in M. Butterfly (1988), Joan Allen and Peter Friedman in The Heidi Chronicles (1988), and Joe Mantegna and Ron Silver in Speed-the-Plow (1988). The performances aren't specifically organized by date or performer, but the collection concludes with four excerpts from August Wilson works followed by three Shakespearean works. The excerpts are brief, lasting 2-3 minutes each, and even though each segment is introduced by a narrator, this format clearly works better for musicals than it does for plays. Regardless, it remains a rare chance to see stage performances that for the most part are not available on home video. Collectors who already own the three musical volumes, however, will have to weigh how badly they want The Plays when they consider mostly duplicating their purchase with the Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection. --David Horiuchi

Classic Broadway Shows.......2007-03-30
Almost every show on this DVD is a favorite of mine and has been for many years. It's great to have these true treasures at your beck and call through this DVD. Some of these talented performers will never be seen again. I am very, very happy with this DVD. beti schwartz
Broadway Stars.......2007-03-20
Broadway stars abound in these DVDs. There is a wonderful variety of clips and the narrations and interviews are good, as well. Such talent! Gregory Hines, Robert Goulet, Richard Kiley, Julie Andrews, and more and more to knock you off your feet. Don't pass this up!
Almost Perfect.......2007-02-27
I saw this on PBS and immediately decided to buy myself a copy!
While these excerpts are not from the broadway shows themselves, they are from the Tony Awards and are therefore, 'live.' And it's just wonderful to experience the level of 'energy' that great actors project when performing live on a stage.
There are a couple of songs that I don't particularly care for myself (Worst Pies in London), but most are wonderful, and the performances, while not 100% flawless (this WAS filmed live) are almost all engaging.
A few comments:
Yul Brenner manages to project more energy just standing there in the background than his co-star singing her heart out in "Shall We Dance." She is, alas, a fairly indifferent actress, and is overwhelmed by her enormous dress!
Lip-synced or no, Robert Preston in "Music Man" is wonderful. As is Joel Grey's fabulous MC in "Caberet." Again, it's all about energy.
I'd honestly never even heard of Patti Lapone before I saw this show, but she blew me away with her powerful voice. (Evita.)
"All that Jazz" and "Nowadays" from "Chicago" is, alas, much too short, but delightful.
The most unintentionally funny bit -- Twiggy looking either utterly bored or utterly terrified (but completely out of character, regardless) as she struggles with a simple dance routine in "Kicking the Clouds Away," (From "My One and Only.") She must have not realized that the camera had her in close up ...
Recommend this 100%
Finally some good music!.......2007-01-24
I loved this collection especially because there will really never again be a group of such talented performers and writers. The people nowadays just don't have the talent!
Met my expectations.......2007-01-16
I saw part of the Broadway's Lost Treasure Collection during a Public TV Fundraiser. I ordered it for myself and sent a second collection to a friend for a Christmas gift. The collection is well worth the money.

The third volume of Broadway's Lost Treasures continues to mine historic stage performances from the vaults of the Tony Award telecasts. For fans who are used to experiencing musicals only through audio recordings, the benefits are two-fold. First, you can see great stars performing classic songs on stage, including Alfred Drake (Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"), Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston (Damn Yankees' "Whatever Lola Wants"), and a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach (Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"). Second, you can see more recent, fully staged performances of numbers from shows that you may not have seen on Broadway or on tour, including the opening number of Ragtime, Kristin Chenoweth (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown's "My New Philosophy"), and especially the new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals such as the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), Black and Blue ("T'ain't Nobody's Business if I Do"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now," though it would have been nice to see one of the bigger numbers like "Slap That Bass" or "I Got Rhythm"). As with previous Treasures, the older performances tend to be minimally staged, one notable exception being the relatively obscure How Now, Dow Jones (1968) getting a set, costumes, and choreography.
Two other performances don't have quite the sizzle they could have. Julie Andrews performs three songs from her Lerner & Loewe canon (My Fair Lady's "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" and "I Could Have Danced All Night" and the title song from Camelot), but they're not vintage; they're from the 1991 awards. (The cover art showing a young Andrews is thus misleading.) Ethel Merman also performs a medley of three touchstone songs (Girl Crazy's "I Got Rhythm," Call Me Madam's "You're Just in Love," and Gypsy's "Everything's Coming Up Roses"), but in 1978, almost two decades after her last great role in Gypsy. But any Merman footage is rare, and this was before Andrews's infamous vocal troubles, so it's still enjoyable, even stirring, to see these distinctive and distinguished artists. Really, any disappointment with the Broadway's Lost Treasures series is only quibbling, as fans are lucky to have this footage available at all. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
A good volume 3.......2006-11-15
I now have all 3 volumes of this particular set, and like the other ones, it has its' ups and downs. Ups?? Definitely "My New Philosophy" by Kristin Chenowith from the revival of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"; Jonathan Pryce doing "The American Dream" from "Miss Saigon"; the late (and most definitely great) Jerry Orbach doing "She Likes Basketball" from "Promises, Promises" (so that is what he looked like in 1968), Zero Mostel doing "Comedy Tonight" from "Forum". The downs?? Desi Arnaz's song was much too short, Roert Goulet singing "The Happy Time" (is that the best they could find for him?)
But the best part is that for the younger Broadway fans is that this volume, like the others, lets them see the greats of Broadway at their best. And it reminds the rest of us just how much fun it was to watch the Tony Awards then.
It's ok........2006-07-31
I only bought this one for the song by Jerry Orbach. The first 2 DVDs were better.
The Broadway add-on.......2006-07-18
If you own Broadway Treasures II, it might be a good idea to round out your collection with Part III. This DVD is not as good as Broadways's Golden Era and Broadway Treasures II, but it's worth the purchase price to have the full collection.
Lost treasures? Some aren't even 5 years old!.......2006-06-07
This rather chaotic collection of broadcasts from the Tony Awards is -- by far -- the weakest of the three.
Firstly, how can a somewhat confusing collection of snippets from the 2002 revival of Into the Woods be a lost treasure only a few years later? If you wanted to include something from the show, why not use the original production, instead?
All in all, almost half of the performances are less than 15 years old. Some of which deserve to be included in this series (such as the haunting opening number from Ragtime or Chita Revera's "Where You Are" from Kiss of the Spider Woman), but perhaps in later editions.
There are some performances that are ... curious ... selections, at best. Such as an incomprehensible medly fomr Rose Marie, which hasn't played on Broadway since the 1920s. Then again, it was introduced by Robert Goulet, who performed in it. (Something that gives me the giggles is that a troup of male-voiced Canadian Mounties have got bosoms and lipstick, showing that it was obviously lip-synched.) Another example would be the production number "Step to the Rear" from How Now, Dow Jones. This seems to be included only because Tommy Tune was in the chorus (and it was introduced by Tommy Tune).
Then again, the clips taken from the 1971 Tony broadcast (to honor previous Tony-winning musicals) are disappointingly short (like Gwen Verdon performing "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees) because of the time they originally played. Watching Zero Mostel in a toga over his tux performing a shortened "Comedy Tonight" was wonderful, even if it did seem like a tease because of its brevity.
Other gems include contrasting Ethel Merman's and Angela Lansbury's versions of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from Gypsy and the late Jerry Orbach's "She Likes Basketball" from Promises, Promises.
All in all, this is a welcome edition to the library of a hardcore Broadway musical fan. For the general public, though, I highly recommend the first two volumes of this series instead.
highs and lows.......2006-05-01
This DVD has some very ho-hum material, so unmemorable that I can't recall what I want to say about it. I agree with other reviewers that the lip-synched Angela Lansbury is quite lame. However, can we talk about why I bought it?
The 42nd street number is everything you expect from broadway--the ultimate huge tap number.
Debbie Allen's performance of "America" is quite satisfying.
I cried tears of nostalgia listening to Julie Andrew reprise Camelot and My Fair Lady.
The Fosse Number (Sing, Sing Sing)is so very, very Fosse.
After viewing the title number from Ragtime, I will now have to move heaven and earth to see the show.
But....this DVD is worth owning for the soul-stirring performance of Michel Bell singing "Ol' Man River" in Showboat. Bass voices are not known for their clarity, but this guy is simply amazing. The beauty and passion of this performance is overwhelming. The harmony of the cast is gorgeous.
BTW, I saw him perform it live on stage in the musical. When the number ended, no one clapped for a span of few seconds. All that could be heard in the Fabulous Fox were sniffles---coming from all the audience members who were moved to tears. True story.

Broadway's Lost Treasures delivers what the title promises: 21 historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards between 1967 and 1986. (Five were not included when the program was broadcast on PBS in 2003.) Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts (Yul Brynner in The King and I, Robert Preston in The Music Man, Joel Grey in Cabaret) seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera perform "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago, or John Raitt, a stage legend who's woefully underrepresented on film, singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There." The most electrifying excerpt is from Evita, anchored by the powerhouse trio of Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin, and Bob Gunton, the most surprising is Julie Andrews singing "Send in the Clowns" (she wasn't in the cast of A Little Night Music), and the most touching is a 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow." An indispensable record of a quintessential American art form. --David Horiuchi

This Kundalini Yoga DVD moves, breathes, stretches, and works!
Customer Reviews:
Totaly addicted!!!!.......2007-02-20
This type of yoga is absolutely awsome. Ana and Ravi are such an inspiration. I feel exhillerated after doing this workout. I realy feel like I am doing my body good and have actally began eating much healthier since starting this workout. You feel so good after doing this DVD you WANT to eat better. Some other reviewer compared this DVD to Shiva Rea. Shiva Rea is good, but I do not feel as good after doing Shiva Rea and with Shiva I am always looking at the clock and I feel bored. there is no boredom doing Ana and Ravis DVD. You will not regret this purchase. I feel like i glow on the inside and on the out.
Not the best of Ravi and Ana.......2007-01-10
I have almost all of their DVDs and love them to pieces. This DVD is the least rigorous and transforming of their DVDs. Try the others instead.
Really Powerful Stuff.......2006-12-31
Kundalini yoga does great things for loosening my spine. I love all forms of yoga but Kundalini is my firm favorite for the number of unusual poses and sequences that work the body and mind on so many levels. The best thing about Kundalini Yoga is you actually get all that yoga has too offer (stress relief, flexibility, shaping, meditation) and everything else covered like cardio, low impact, and strengthening, etc..
This one ,like Fat Free Yoga, has four short sets (by the way Fat Free Yoga is excellent as well - a staple of mine)
As with all the Ana & Ravi DVD's you can practically do the whole thing with your eyes closed the instruction is so clear.
I have all their new ones ( in fact, now that I have this and Cleanse my collection is complete!) this is one of the first DVD's that Ana makes an appearance in and I miss her talking like she does in the newer ones. Still, she is gorgous, has
great camera presence, beautiful form, and is a joy to practice along with!
I highly recommend any of the Ana & Ravi DVDs.
What are ya'll thinking?.......2006-12-24
I've read so many good reviews, so I thought I should try it. I am an advanced yoga addict and was looking forward to something new. This just aint it. Most of it is some sort of lame meditation, way too short to be meaningful. Just an excuse to stop the workout and catch your breath. For the workout itself, well, it's more like aerobics than yoga. You might twist your neck and shoulders while doing it. I'm sure it's good for something but it didn't make me feel at all like a real yoga practice would do (try Shiva Rea, now that's perfection). Not the same relaxation and ease. Just bad, very bad. Waste of money.
Great stuff.......2006-08-16
This is a very interesting practice. I am just getting back into yoga after years of a break. I was a bit skeptical about the breathing and techniques. When all was said and done I hadn't felt that good in a long, long time.

DJ Shadow Live.......2007-05-12
Looked for this in stores and could never find it. Awesome dvd. Comes with the same cd. Organ Donor is great. No songs with IB but what can you do.
Awesome performance, well presented.......2007-01-12
I'd heard the audio from this release, but knew that I needed the DVD to get the extra tracks. I was also eager to see DJ Shadow perform his material live and see what was involved in the production of live music from recordings while mixing, using samples, turntables, cd DJ stations, etc.
Very pleased with this DVD and the content therein.
Incredible music, fantastic value!.......2006-11-14
I'm a recent fan of DJ Shadow and like any new music that I fall in love with I get obsessed and start collecting *everything* related to the music/band/artist. Sometimes my purchases are just for nostaligia's sake other times I turn up a real gem.
THIS is a REAL GEM!
I won't go into fine detail about what makes his music special or a breakdown of each song... if you are reading this then you probably already know his music and other reviewers have covered the edgy "live" quality of the tracks. Let me just say this DVD is a MUST-HAVE for any Shadow fan. No disappointments here! But I will go a bit into the value of this particular DVD/CD combo...
Not only do you get a ton of live concert DVD with unmatched visuals but you get a 21 track CD of the concert to boot! Be sure not to miss the "special features" section either! Just the first two tracks in this section alone is worth half the price of the DVD... throw in a complete and utterly fantastic CD that would normally sell for what... $15? And you can pretty much consider the excellent DVD concert as a freebe! Best value since I picked up Korn's CD "Greatest Hits Vol.1" that included a fantastic (although short) concert DVD from the famous CBGB's in New York (worth the price of the CD alone!)
Wish I had a living room big enough to have the kind of party this DVD was made for. Superb.
by far the best live album in this genre of all time.......2006-03-30
recently ive been on a live album kick searching for my favorite artists best (or any) live releases. i first saw this cd/dvd combo at tower records and instantly got it and i can say it is the greatest dj-ing ive ever heard. the astral beats and atmospheres that is a dj shadow production sound perfect as he mashes tracks together andn scratches the hell out of his collection. the cd contains the entire show minus a few tracks but its reeeeeeeeeal long. thinking that the dvd isnt much is wrong because the visuals to each song make the entire performance surreal. its fantastic. if you have ...endtroducing (which you should have!) and or the private press buy this NOW!
Satisfaction.......2005-02-10
Well as you can see all the reviews are 4 stars or better! I've been a fan of Shadow since like 98 or 99, i'll try to give an objective review! This item is well worth the money for Shadow fans or trip-hop fans or DJ fans! I highly suggest you check out any single song by Shadow before you buy this item, his music is not very conventional to any genre...even trip-hop which doesn't really have a standard sound! If you like a song, you'll like them all and this product!
The DVD's main show is like an hour and half long live performance by Shadow! Its a cross section of every one of his albums, but songs mixed with each other in amazing combinations! With on-stage visuals (most are cued to the music) which are often editted to show on your screen clearly! You also get some other bonus performances of Shadow with Numark and Cut Chemist (I think) which is interesting!
The CD is a shortened version of the same main performance on the DVD! I like this because i'd want to listen to it without a dvd player!
This dvd/cd set is a really great reward for any of his fans in that you get to hear everything mixed in new ways while actually seeing how he does his thing! (Example: he blends What Does Your Soul Look Like 2 with Bloodstain) Then there's also the on-stage and on-screen visuals! Just in case anybody is worried about the sound quality, being that this is video of a live performance, fear not! The sound quality on the DVD and on the CD sounds as clear as studio production!
As far as mildly interested people that aren't really fans of Shadow, I suggest you get any one of Shadow's albums or DL a song or two so you know what the music sounds like! Its not really conventional to any genre!
*if my use of exclamation points makes this review seem less sincere, i apologize! please re-read and substitute periods for the exclamation points! Or for an entirely new spin on it, try using question marks at the end of each sentence! it really sounds less sincere that way!

Talent Wasted..........2006-04-29
Wow! What am amazing waste of time and money. This movie is awfull. There is a reason it only made $2 million. The only people who saw it were the extra's and their families so they could point themselves out in the film.
Boring!.......2005-10-30
The reviews of this movie were so good that I bought it.
What a mistake.
Don't buy it, rent it if you want to waste 2 hours of your time.
Love Nola? Get it!.......2005-04-11
Great performance from Peter Faulk. Many familiar faces in the large cast. Most of the hilarious lines are uttered as part of the radio soap written by Faulk's character, Pedro Carmichael. Seems Pedro has issues with Albanians. Pedro has issues, period. Great scenes shot in and around New Orleans, fab music from Mr. Marsalis. Overlooked, underrated movie.
Fair movie, the real star is Wynton Marsalis's soundtrack.......2004-05-25
The movie is a bit of a mess, hard to follow at times, hard to know when to laugh, or if we are laughing, should we be?
Peter Falk stars as a 1950's script writer for a New Orleans radio station's soap operas. Apparently he dislikes Albanians and allows his radio soap operas to take strange detours into jokes at the expense of Albanians.
The movie also has a movie within a movie involving a romance between 36-year old Barbara Hershey and 21-years young Keanu Reeves.
The real star of the movie is the city of New Orleans and the amazing soundtrack of Wynton Marsalis. He really did a hell of a job with his compositions, but hey the guy is from New Orleans -- who better to set loose to write a soundtrack about his home city.
Very Entertaining! 5 stars movie!.......2004-02-27
This movie is delightful to watch. Keanu Reeves is great in this movie - very charming and fun to watch. I like his character a lot as a 21-year old college boy (very believable). My favorite part in the movie is when Martin was w/ his aunt Julie in a cafeteria - telling her about his dreams, of Paris, etc. Barbara Hershey and Peter Falk are such great actors. I highly recommend this movie.

Circus is an appropriate title for this busy British three-ring caper film. John Hannah is the amiable ringmaster, a gambling junkie and "the smartest man I know" according to all his acquaintances. Which doesn't quite explain why everyone targets him as a patsy in their elaborate scams and schemes. There are plots aplenty here: frumpy accountant Peter Stormare hires Hannah to murder his wife and then videotapes the deed for collateral in a blackmail scheme. Upwardly mobile thug Brian Conley pressures Hannah to run his casino while plotting his demise. Sexy Famke Janssen puts on her slinky best femme fatale pose as Hannah's girlfriend with a questionable past, playing the players against one another. That past catches up with her when Fred Ward, an old partner in crime she abandoned holding the bag years back, arrives for payback. Almost too clever for its own good, Circus is an ingeniously engineered mercenary free-for-all thick with secret alliances, double-crosses, hidden identities, and a plot that twists into a new direction every five minutes. What it misses in all the self-conscious plotting is a human equation. Hannah's grinning, easygoing attitude and Janssen's sultry air of mystery help fill out the characters, but the only real satisfaction coming at the end of this crack caper is its sheer logistic perfection. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
A clear winner, in all arenas some may not stomach the concept.......2007-05-30
CIRCUS (2000), is a movie that very few people in North America know
about, because of its British origin, and cast, which is unfortunate,
considering the quality, the story, and the sequence of events that
will have people's jaws dropping over 90 mins, with considerable
amusement, and some shock.
Once more, Famke Janssen reprises her "eye-candy" role as the token
hot girl, as was the case in Made or Rounders, for example.
The story deals with characters in the British underworld, For that
reason alone, it may turn off, scare off the majority of viewers who
think they'll have to hold their noses as they watch the silver
screen. Some may doubt of the entertainment value possible or feel
righteous in rejecting it on account of the theme. However, if that
were the case, how to explain the success of the Godfather, or Agatha
Cristie's movies, Perry Mason, etc. ?
Especially enjoyable, is the peppering of a sense of humor throught
the script is, as is the discerning taste in the music selected in
the proper moments, and the surprisingly good taste in the choice of
filming locations. e.g a famous seaside resort in the UK, a beach, a
garden party at a wealthy billionaire's estate, the numerous night
scenes skillfully filmed. All this is done so as to not depress the
viewer, or instill negativity notwithstanding the simultaneous
brutality of the characters throughout the first half of the movie.
Also appreciated, are the subtitles so as to better understand the
English accents and the widescreen release.
A head's up to some audiences, who may find objectionable behavior,
the cutting off of fingers, the eating a ear off a victim, brutality,
extorsion, grifting, horse races and cards gambling, the repeated
setting up of "houses of mirrors" by expert con men on their marks,
with even their cohorts not suspecting anything until they fall in
the traps, not to mention the overall unproductive lives that the
characters seem to be leading in this strange world of their own.
The director consciously decided as added spice, select vehicles,
Rolls Royce, Austin Mini, Mercedez Benz 80's vintage, Citroen from
the 70's, etc. The editing is also impeccable as the action is
non-stop, freely flowing coherently from one scene to the next until
the end.
With a mix of action outdoors, and indoors, and a successful human
touch present from start to finish, the script was crafted skillfully
enough to not allow the audience to mull over the insidious
underlying behaviors too closely.
However, what makes this story totally unrealistic, is that the law
is entirely absent. However, with only 90 mins, this is
understandable. Overall, CIRCUS is a clear winner, in all arenas of
evaluation, with the caveat, of course, that some may not stomach the
concept.
Circus.......2007-03-20
Pay close attention, you'll need to. The story winds around so many loops, it's tough to figure out where the story will go, and who is playing whom. If you like a mystery with a twist, you'll like this.
Here's to Circus.......2005-06-13
Forget Usual Suspects, forget Guy Ritchie or Pulp-Fictionesque movies. CIRCUS outweighs films like Confidence or other con/affair-like plots. Mind-entertaining, spectacular, interesting, hard-to-crack. Worth if you like to use to solve riddles, if you're a bit sick of sour as two-week milk american con-movies. Thumbs up! Hannah, Izzard and Jannsen do it!
Too Many Twists: A Failed British Gangster Movie.......2005-05-26
Many have described CIRCUS as being in the tradition of other British-gangster films, such as SNATCH and LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS. If this is so, it is a tradition that not only has been lost and forgotten by the time CIRCUS started rolling its camera, it has been trampled upon as well by the time it hit the big screen. While there were some entertaining moments in this film, I was completely bowled over with the "amateur" feel the film serves up right from the start. As to be expected, there are a mess of twists and turns in the plot. In fact, every five minutes finds us chasing down a new lead. While some films can pull this off, CIRCUS falls beneath the weight of the maze it tries to weave. The problem with a film that has too many twists is that you are sure halfway through the movie of how it will end: exactly as you thought at the beginning. Thus, in the end, I was not surprised by the logic of CIRCUS, nor was I impressed by it.
While I will not completely sink this movie, I think that you can pick up many more that are "in the tradition" that not only do the tradition justice but also create something new and exciting. You'll find none of that here.
3 3/4 stars.......2004-11-21
In the tradition of Snatch and twisty caper British films everywhere, Rob Walker's film Circus finally flipped its way across my screen today.
With the delicious Josh Hannah, a cameo by the fabulous Eddie Izzard, and a whole heap of talented actors, I expected a bit more. The fault was with the story however, which twisted and turned itself right back to the obvious conclusion. I never doubted my theory on it from the beginning and I was right. It is a fun watch though and while some of the gags are tired- big man, small car- I enjoyed the basic plot. The characters are likeable, the story is fun, and its visually appealing. Definitely worth a watch.

Only a handful of independent animators have ever attempted a feature-length film, and it's regrettable that Bill Plympton's first effort isn't more successful. His extremely limited style of animation--he uses about one-third fewer drawings than Saturday morning kidvid shows--worked for his short films, but it simply can't sustain an audience's interest for more than an hour. The limits of the visuals might be less noticeable if the story were more interesting. Del, an aspiring songwriter, needs to come up with a hit in a hurry, so he can marry Didi, a secretary at Mega Music. He visits the weird town of Flooby Nooby where he hears people singing various songs--which he takes and passes off as own. At times, Plympton seems to be trying for the upbeat tone of the old Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musicals, but those films about "amateurs" relied on very talented professional performers and songwriters. The songs in The Tune range from amateurish pastiches to utter doggerel. Watching The Tune is only slightly more entertaining than spending 69 minutes in a sensory deprivation tank. --Charles Solomon

Mind Blowing Animation.......2005-04-11
Bill plymptons first full length movie is finally on dvd and its so good. The animation is the classic style of morphing and it never fails to stop entertaing. If your a fan of mature animation or plymptons this is a must have
Plympton for ALL Ages.......2004-11-27
Bill Plympton's hand-drawn colored pencil cartoons are a joy to look at, and very funny with their multitudes of visual puns. But unfortunately most of his films are really for more mature audiences than can be shown in a classroom setting. This is the one DVD of Plympton's that is entirely appropriate for young audiences. Kids like the silly songs and weird roaming story. It is also an excellent example of economizing animation production with cycles and "moving holds." I wish they would package it with his short film "Your Face" which is also great for kids as an example of how animation can be used to change something normal --a face-- into a million variations of funny and strange.
Funny Animation, Great Tunes.......2002-03-14
This full length film is highly recommended for Bill Plympton fans or fans of edgy animation. A solid effort from one of America's most distinctive animation artists.
For the most part "The Tune seems to be a collection of Bill Plympton's shorter animations strung together with the aid of a thin storyline. The story is a sweet one, of love and what it means to give someone a song. But the main character is a little cloying, and it's hard to care much about what happens to him and his girl. That being said, the peripheral characters, who star in the musical numbers, are much more interesting. The animations are outstanding and easily stand on their own. They seem to have been done at different times, in different styles, and it seems like not all these bits were aware they were gonna become a part of this movie. As a result each has a slightly different look, and color palette, which adds to the interest of the film.
Plympton's signature pencil sketch style is jumpy, wierd, disorienting and hilarious. Heads fold in half, split in two, and turn inside out. Characters morph into representations of the lyrics while they sing. The Wiseman's bald head grows funny hats by the dozens while a twangy countrified guitar does speed-solos. Serious tango partners share dumb jokes.
Each scene (for the most part) is based on a song, and the music is very catchy. I bought the soundtrack and still sing "Isn't It Good Again" and "Dance All Day" to myself frequently.
This is not your standard animated movie. It's intended audience is adults, though it's certainly not "dirty" and kids could enjoy most sections of this. At most, sex is hinted at, as when a hotdog enthusiastically leaps into a hotdog bun. Pretty obvious, and amusing, but at the same time fairly innocuous. Also, we get to see a moment of naked animated bums at the end of "Dance All Day." Nothing your average kid can't handle.
In fullscreen, about an hour long. Regrettably, the sound is slightly muddy, and like most of Plmyptons releases, it's short on special features (there are none) and DVD production values aren't the highest. But this flick is certainly worth seeing on it's own merits.
Brilliant and distinctive animated musical.......2001-12-26
I was astonished to read ...(this website's) in-house review trashing The Tune. It's one of the most innovative animated musical films of all time. I saw in the early 90s and couldn't get it out of my mind. Finally purchased the soundtrack a few years ago, and it's one of my favorites, with tunes rooted in a dozen genres, from surfer music and rural blues to slick Vegas show tunes, Sondheim-type musings, and commercial country--about the only thing The Tune skips is opera! Bill Plympton's jittery animation works perfectly.
Just amazing...the second time 'round..........2001-09-15
If you've only watched this movie once then you haven't experienced it. You need to watch it again because it is then when you'll discover its brilliance. Believe me, the first time I hated it, then I was forced to watch it again, and it now is one of my favorite movies of all times. Great songs, great story, great animation. Plympton and McElheron are geniouses! Please appreciate this movie as much as I do.
