A Superficial Portrait Of A Major Hollywood Power Broker-- "The Last Mogul" Is An Interesting, But Incomplete, Documentary.......2007-03-19
Anyone that knows me will tell you right away--I love film. So when a documentary or fictional movie about the film industry rolls around, I'm ready for it. So I was eager to see "The Last Mogul" about Lew Wasserman--a notorious agent who navigated the intricacies of Hollywood for decades rising to the level of a studio chieftain. While Wasserman's story is an interesting one, this documentary raises just about as many questions as it answers.
As Wasserman did not grant interviews and left no written document of his life, we are able to gather nothing of significance from the man himself. Rather we are granted a rather superficial portrait of someone who was undoubtedly a major power player in Hollywood--but it's hard to delineate how much of his story is truth and how much is legend. The substance, however, of this film is provided by friends and cronies of Wasserman and it is clearly a lovefest. If this documentary is to be believed, Wasserman was a maverick unlike anyone else. He single-handedly created Ronald Reagan as a politician, he created the Universal Studios empire that is known today (originating public tours, etc.), he was the first agent to master profit participation in films for his clients, and many other revolutionary methods that agents and studios have pilfered from this one incredible man.
I'm not trying to downplay Wasserman's significance, I'm just suggesting that the documentary is a tad one-sided. For example, as Wasserman took over Universal--it is clear that he had lost touch with modern movies to a certain extent. So what did he do? He stepped aside to let younger talent breathe life into the studio. An astute business decision, to be sure, that gave rise to many of the biggest pictures of the mid-seventies including "Jaws" and "American Graffiti." But the film would have it both ways--mentioning Wasserman's lack of involvement and then giving him credit for the artistic and commercial merit of these films.
Regardless, I was still intrigued by Wasserman's story. With reputed mob connections which aren't fully explored in the film, Wasserman courted his share of controversy. From his well-documented temper to his trouble with the law (his practices as an agent were dismantled by the government because they were considered monopolies), it's a colorful story. But lacking any input from Wasserman, we lack any real insight--any real truth. If you like Hollywood history, check this out--but it succeeds more for entertainment than for actual information. KGHarris, 03/07.
Why was this movie even made? Last Mogul is Lame-O!.......2007-02-16
When the film business has to resort to making tedious biographical movies about its pencil pushers and accountants (Lew Wasserman, head of MCA), you know it has as much culturance relevance as a Sunday newspaper insert from Wal-Mart. The worst sign of a boring, bromide of a movie is when Larry King turns up in the first five minutes to offer his asinine comments. This movie is heavy on interviews of kneecap-kissing milquetoasts, and short of anything interesting. It's a talkfest among a wrinkle-room of blowhards pontificating about how powerful Lew (Who?) Wasserman was back in the day of this and that, and so what? This film is great for any nostalgia fan who longs for the day when a company executive could push his secretaries around all day without fear of a sexual harassment suit. Bo-ring!!!!
Superficial but informative and nice to watch.......2007-01-03
Now I know that Lew Wasserman was a very powerful and influential personality, that his sphere of influence surpassed the world of showbusiness. (According to this movie he practically created Ronald Reagan as a politician). But I still do not understand in what way he influenced society, which would be interesting to know - but which maybe is a subject to deep and complex for a filmed documentary. This movie is well made (great musical soundtrack) and certainly entertaining. Even in old age Mr Wasserman was an attractive and telegenic man - it almost seems a pity he only acted behind the set.
THE REAL GODFATHER IN HOLLYWOOD!.......2006-12-26
For those that thought Marlon Brando was the only "Godfather" in Hollywood, this dvd will introduce you to the real one -Lew Wasserman.
Super-agent, super-mogul and super-powerful. From Cleveland to Hollywood to the White House, this documentary lays out the life of a man through those that knew, loved and feared him. Lew was not a man that gave many interviews, least none on film and he was not one to write things down either. He firmly believed in keeping an ultra-low profile, unless you had to deal with him personally and then -watch out!
The master of the deal, he personally managed client Ronald Reagan and remade him as the "Great Communicator". From the Screen Actor's Guild presidency, to the Governorship of California and finally the ultimate starring role playing the White House. And Wasserman was supposed to be the Democratic half of the MCA team. That is the Music Corporation of America, which Lew really elevated out of the band booking business, into the biggest talent agency ever seen. It's all here, along with the "real" tour of Universal Studios. The one that the tram guides are not allowed to talk about. But overall, Lew Wasserman comes out of this pretty well considering his "alleged" mob affliations. A necessary evil that at least got things done and maintained some kind of order in Hollywood. Ruthlessly shrewd, cunning and even at times sentimental, he created the monster that has become the new Hollywood. Where it's all about the deal and the packaging of style over substance.
May I suggest for those that want to learn more and see everything laid out and documented in black & white, a few good books on Amazon- "Mr. & Mrs. Hollywood" by Kathleen Sharp; "The Last Mogul" book that is by Dennis McDougal; "When Hollywood Had A King" by Connie Bruck and finally the investigative expose that blazed the way "Dark Victory -Reagan, MCA & The Mob" by Dan Moldea!
THE ULTIMATE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE ABOUT HOLLYWOOD.......2006-06-04
I saw this film when it opened in New York after receiving a mention in Vanity Fair. The movie takes the best of The Player and The Kid Stays in The Picture and becomes even better. If you love Hollywood, this is the movie about how everything started. It is jammed packed with priceless ovitz, evans, zanuck and tons of others. I loved it. This is a must have for any movie lover collection.

Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining, engaging inside Hollywood tale.......2005-12-06
For the student of film history, or the newcomer to the world of early Hollywood, this engrossing portrait provides plenty of memorable material. The filmmaker is the grandson of the movie's subject, and the honor of profiling the man is well-balanced with an editorial eye. The archival material is great, and this is well worth seeing.
Great Film for Movie History Buffs.......2001-09-04
Not only is this a really informative piece that is entertaining and thoughtful, it is made by someone personally connected to the subject. This comes through, and really involves us in the story of the documentary. Movie history buffs should definitely check this one out.

Description
The jungle is a jinx for Tarz & Jane, Cheeta & Boy when the fearless but overweight King of the Jungle gets his manhood bitten off. Yup, after climbing down the aluminum ladder from his tree house and losing a wrestling match with Cheeta the Obnoxious Ape (played by a guy in one of the world's worst gorilla suits), Tarz attacks a menacing croc who makes off with his member. Ouch! Naturally, Jane is terribly upset. Especially since she's horny as hell and isn't satisfied with Boy, a dim-witted dork who stopped being a boy years ago: "Boy is fastest gun in the jungle!" So Boy suggests they visit the mysterious Wango-Wango tribe whose sexual magic might make Tarz a man again. Aided by Wanda, a Great White Huntress played by notorious adult-film star Georgina Spelvin, they venture to the land of the Wango-Wango to get Tarz a new tool in this outrageously dumb dirty-joke of a jungle film. Plus: Over in the next jungle, you'll find Tarzun and the Valley of Lust - a "Storefront-Theater" classic - in which a younger, more virile Jungle Man does battle with an even worse-looking man-in-a-monkey-suit before lowering the loin-cloth for both Jayne, his platinum-blonde squeeze, and Meena, a jungle goddess who succors Tarzun's groin after the klutz swings smack into the trunk of a tree. Obviously, Edgar Rice Burroughs these ain't.

Save your money.......2007-06-05
Save your money . . . your own imagination is better! This was about as low budget as you can go.
Like naked dudes?.......2006-06-13
NUDITY: We get alot more story here than sex. But everyone does get naked full frontal. But its more guys than girls! What's up with that. Lots of naked black guys with huge shafts flopping in the breeze. We get about 6 differnt girls in both movies go nude. We get some bush, overal not bad. Its very zany comedy.
The second movie has a sex scene at the begining that is REAL, no way that was simulated, but you don't see any penetration. Again Tarzan walks around nude too much, with his noodle in the wind. Both sex scenes in the second movie looked like they were hardcore but cut short for this DVD.
I give it 4 stars because you get some naked bush, but it could have been better. The picture quality on the second movie is very bad.
NOT a candidate for the Oscar but............2006-03-19
If you liked this, check out Toby Radloff staring in "Killer Nerd". Another twisted low budget flick.. Guess the best way to describe Tarz/Jane/Boy/Cheetah: Vintage Stag Film complete with buttered popcorn ;)

If you find another source..........2007-01-10
If you find another source for this movie, pursue it!
I liked the movie very much, and saw it first produced on Showtime Entertainment. This copy appears to be burn made from someone's TV set.
Good movie for cheesy fun films, poor quality recording.
BIG LOW-BROW LAUGHS!.......2006-01-30
This movie is hilarious. Danny Devito is a thug with Hollywood dreams, and his mob-ties make them all come true. Just imagine the endless possabilities! Absolutely stupid-funny!
"I didn't make a move on you for four days. If that isn't love, I don't know what is...".......2005-09-20
So what happens when a mobbed up New Jersey trucking magnate comes to California with dreams of becoming a TV producer? He uses his `influence' to manipulate the system and get one of the highest rated shows of all time...that's the premise behind The Mogul (1984), a made for cable TV show...you know, back when I saw this on cable, it was called "The Ratings Game". Written by Michael Barrie and Jim Mulholland, both former writers for The David Letterman Show and directed by Danny DeVito (he also stars in the movie), features his wife Rhea Perlman ("Cheers"). Also appearing is an extensive list of notables including Gerrit Graham (Used Cars), Barry Corbin (Urban Cowboy), Louis Giambalvo (Weekend at Bernie's), Ronny Graham (Spaceballs), Huntz Hall (The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters), Vincent `Mr. Vargas' Schiavelli (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), Kevin McCarthy (UHF), George "Norm' Wendt ("Cheers"), Michael Richards (UHF), noted columnist Army Archerd (Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood), Jason Hervey ("The Wonder Years"), Tracey Walter (Repo Man), Jerry Seinfeld ("Seinfeld"), ESPN sportscaster Roy Firestone, Jayne Meadows ("The New Steve Allen Show"), and Steve Allen prolific composer, writer, and talk show host.
DeVito plays Vic De Salvo, a recent transplant to California from New Jersey. Seems Vic and his family have made a good deal of dough from their trucking enterprise, but Vic has aspirations of becoming a big time TV producer, yet he can't get any interest in his treatments. After being thrown out of nearly every major television studio, he tries MBC, a network struggling with exceptionally poor ratings (and their new fall line up ain't looking so hot). They're doing so poorly in fact, the president of the network, Parker Braithwaite (Graham) informs his executive in charge of programming of his impending termination. In retaliation, the executive gives Vic a deal based on the fact he knows Vic's show will be a bomb. Around this time we meet Francine Kester (Perlman), employee of Computron, the company that supplies the oh so important ratings to the industry...the higher a show is rated (meaning, the more people watching), the more money the network airing the show can charge for advertising. Anyway, Vic throws a celebratory party, one that Francine attends (she's the only one to show up) after snagging her boss's (McCarthy) invitation, and Vic and Francine hit it off. Soon taping of Vic's show, Sittin' Pretty, begins, with Vic as the director and star, and the network executives, seeing what a potential disaster the show is, decide to air it against impossible competition so that when it fails miserably, they can cancel it and get out of their contract with Vic...but Vic has a plan...with Francine's help, Vic gets the top secret names of viewing household in key, viewing areas, gets the families out of their houses, and installs his thugs so that his show will garner high ratings. The plan works, Vic is given free reign on the network, and his programming choices are interesting, to say the least. Things seem to be going well, but soon allegations surface, and the authorities begin to investigate...
This movie kind of reminded me of an overly long, semi-funny SCTV skit. It had some truly funny moments, but as a whole, it's just a tepid comedy. Some may call it a scathing satire of the television industry, but it always seemed to me that wasn't an industry that needed poking fun at, as it's kind of a joke unto itself...but then that's just my opinion. The characters are colorful, but ultimately shallow enough for the viewer to take little, or no interest in what happens, other than sitting around waiting for the next comedic bit. DeVito's character was probably the worst, being a particularly lame stereotype at best, and it's not that I'm hung up on the `political correctness' or lack thereof, but rather then fact it was just so lame. The funniest, and most memorable characters to me were Vic's extremely effeminate assistant/secretary Skip, played perfectly by Vincent Schiavelli, and Cap'n Andy, longtime children's show host recently fired by the network, played by Ronny Graham. In one scene, after Vic sells his original show to the network, wants to have a bash, so he tells Skip to set it up and invite as many A-list individuals as he can think of, to which Skip replies in a lispy tone "In that case, Chuck Heston is a must!". Another really funny line occurs near the beginning as Gerrit Graham's character of the MBC exec calls the ratings company to complain that their sampling plan is flawed because it doesn't include segments of the population who tune into his network, like prisoners and those in psychiatric facilities "We get a lot of fan mail from mental institutions." The best bits in this film occur once Vic becomes a powerful network exec and begins developing TV shows like Nunzio's Girls, a show about a street hustler and his women, a Remington Steele knockoff featuring Vic's spindly nephew, and a children's cartoon show titled The Goombas, which is basically The Sopranos, if they were cartoon fish. This last one provides some of the funniest bits only because it doesn't play off like it was made for children...in one segment the cartoon fish hoodlums are in trouble with their bookie, and the head Goomba, in the voice of Vic, calls another a `dumb b*stard'...it's much funnier on the screen than here. There is a certain amount of enjoyment in the movie, besides a couple of characters and a few bits, in that of recognizing all the famous and soon to be famous faces. All in all it's a middling outing with a few, really funny bits, but not enough to make me recommend anyone run out and buy it...a passable rental, perhaps...
The fullscreen picture quality on this Legacy Entertainment Inc. DVD release is so so...there's a few areas with slight pixilation issues (itty bitty squares appear on the screen briefly), indicating perhaps the transfer wasn't as smooth as it could have been, and quality of the picture itself is kind of mushy, meaning it could have been a lot better, and the same could be said of the Dolby Digital mono audio. It was passable, but not as good as it could have been...the DVD does feature an interactive menu and chapter stops, and lists a feature to `Play the Trailer'. Turns out it's not a trailer for this film, but a cheap looking montage of scenes highlighting other Legacy DVD releases, many featuring now big name stars in films they were in before they made it big.

Don't buy this title!!.......2005-08-22
This title is the bootleg title for a film called the The Ratings Game. I'm no sure why Amazon is selling this on their web site.
The quality of this DVD is terrible, I was suspicious when I got it. The DVD case
and the DVD itself look like they were home made.
Having said all this, knockoff or not this is a bad film with a lot of big names in it.
It's like they were trying to make something campy and failed big time. I expected more of Danny DeVito.
Could this movie be made today?.......2003-08-25
A small gem made by Danny Devito in the '80s. It's a made for TV movie that mocks TV itself. One wonders if corporate media would let anyone get away with this today. Devito plays a small time mafia man with aspirations to be a sit com writer. A fired TV exec, to get revenge on his network, signs Devito to a contract as his last official act. Devito's sitcom is a rip off of threes company. The premise is a hunky guy who lives with two big breasted blondes. However, Devito casts himself in the lead. The network is horrified about the deal and tells Devito the contract is null and void if the ratings [are bad]. So they schedule the show to run up against the All Star Game. Devito realizes he's [in trouble]. So he gets his gangster buddies to abduct key Neilson's families and send them on a horrifying "cruise". He then gets some low level thugs to sit in their homes and watch his show. The sitcom wracks up record ratings against the All Star game. Suddenly Devito is hailed as a creative genius and given free creative control at the network. All his TV shows, however, seem to be based on his limit life. He creates a Saturday cartoon for kids called The Goombas, about a couple guys that spend all their time wagering over pool and farting ("Who cut a flounder?") He creates Charlie's Angelsesque show called Nuzio's Girls about three street walkers. The movie has a cameo by Seinfeld's Michael Richards (Kramer). Like many of the characters Richards played on ABC's Fridays, Richards yet again plays a Kramer like character. All in all a cute little film.

Product Description
NASTC's new instructional DVDs offer the user the ability to navigate through specific training tips for moguls and steeps on volume 1. They were created by NASTC director/2-time PSIA National Demonstration Team member Chris Fellows for intermediate, advanced, and expert alpine skiers. These instructional DVDs were made to compliment what you learn in The North American Ski Training Centers curriculum of courses. These DVD's are different than any other skiing DVD. They are a companion to the NASTC methodologies and instruction received at our camps. It is a specific learning tool that will serve as a reference and reminder of the course content. It also serves to introduce people to the ski education opportunities available at NASTC. Via demonstrations, teaching progression, and tips, Chris provides the same all mountain tactical advice he uses to prepare his students for challenging off-piste terrain. As a two time member of the PSIA National Alpine Team, Chris knows how to make complicated concepts simple. Come explore the diverse mountain landscape with Chris as he provides effective solutions to many technique and equipment challenges. Additional perks on the DVDs include detailed step-by-step trainer notes providing in-depth analysis of skiing tactics, photo montages, awesome video, and equipment tips.

Rip Off.......2006-01-15
This is nothing but a advertsiment for North American SkiTraining Center - sold as an instructional video. The actual information contained in the DVD is laughable - 5 minutes maybe. Unbelievable.
tips for advanced skiers.......2005-12-31
As the title suggested, this DVD focuses on "tactics", which is different from techniques but equally important. For advanced skiers who have mastered the technical part of a good turn, tactics are the next set of skills they need to work on in order to conquer the whole mountain.
The DVD contains drills, tips, and demos to help you made better tactical choices when you ski moguls and steeps. The feature that I like the best is the "step by step trainer notes". It breakdown the movements into different stages and provides a summary & picture for each. I wish I can print those out and bring them to the slope!
Overall, the DVD is more valuable for advanced skiers than intermediate skiers. Intermediate skiers who haven't quite able to make a solid turn will find it difficult to perform some of the drills accurately.
Real Tips for Real Skiers.......2005-12-03
Chris Fellows is the real deal, you don't get to the PSIA demo team unless you are an elite skier and, more importantly, an elite teacher. I have a personal bias because I have trained with Chris through his North American Ski Training Center programs and have first hand experience as to his exceptional skills in both these areas. A total learning experience involves real world coaching, video analysis and feedback, post training follow up and a reference library of tips, tactics and advice that the eager student can use to extend their learning away from their coach. With this set of DVD's Fellows has completed his NASTC curriculum while at the same time offering a stand alone product that is extremely valuable to the passionate skier who is unable to spend the whole winter in the mountains training. The DVD's are full of nuggets of wisdom, simply explained and precisely demonstrated so that they can easily be implemented the next time you are facing real ski terrain. For some these are a refresher tips or a better way to do something they are already doing, for most they will be the "light bulb moment" that solves on the mountain challenges they have been struggling with for years. Either way they are fun to watch and will enhance your relationship with the mountain the next time you click in and point `em down!
Great Value for Skiers trying to get to the next level.......2005-11-30
If you are an expert skier you may not need the tips that the video provides. However, if you are planning on taking any lessons this season, or you are a skier that is trying to become more advanced, this video will definitely save you money and help you improve. For a lot less than a 1 hour private lesson, you get a bunch of drills and specific focuses for you to try out and work on the next time you ski. In fact, if you take the time to try out all the things presented and worked towards actually mastering them, not only will your skiing improve, but you will have gotten many hours of lessons out of it.
You really can't take a video up on the mountain with you to teach you to ski. That's another reason I like this style of instruction - focused drills with clear objectives, clearly presented and demonstrated. The simple concepts and ideas presented in the video are easy to remember and I am actually able to recall them when I am skiing without having to take a bunch of notes with me.
Overall, I think it's a great value ...
Nice Title, but no Substance.......2005-10-13
Don't waste your money. I am checking Amazon's return policy. This DVD is exceedingly bad. The description says that the viewer has the ability to navigate through the DVD. The problem is that there are about 4 subtopics on moguls and 6 subtopics on steeps. Each is about one minute. The creator has compiled about 10 ski tips into a DVD and is palming it off as a full instructional video. Where is the substance, guys?
Maybe I am spoiled, having purchased "Breakthrough on Skis II, Bumps and Powder". Admittedly "Breakthrough" is a tough act to follow, but "All Mountain Skiing Tactics" is not worth watching, let alone paying $20 bucks for it.

Family friendly entertainment. Juggling, Vaudville-like comedy trio. The New York Times calls it: "Good natured, high spirited silly fun...a theatrical experience bubbling with constant humor. Footloose, Fanciful, Free-Spirited."
Customer Reviews:
Great fun for the whole family.......2005-12-12
I saw this show live in NYC with my kids. We were very impressed, so when the DVD came out I got it straight away.
It's a juggling show - three rather odd guys juggle all kinds of things. Some of those things are actually flaming! And there is one very neat trick that one of these guys does with his feet, but you need to see it to believe it.
It is absolutely dazzling.
