Holy camp site, Batman! After a fabulously successful season on TV, the campy comic book adventure hit the big screen, complete with painful puns, outrageous supervillains, and fights punctuated with word balloons sporting such onomatopoeic syllables as "Pow!," "Thud!," and "Blammo!" Adam West's wooden Batman is the cowled vigilante alter ego of straight-arrow millionaire Bruce Wayne and Bruce Ward's Robin (a.k.a. Dick Grayson, Bruce's young collegiate protégé) his overeager sidekick in hot pants. Together they battle an unholy alliance of Gotham City's greatest criminals: the Joker (Cesar Romero, whooping up a storm), the Riddler (giggling Frank Gorshin), the Penguin (cackling Burgess Meredith), and the purr-fectly sexy Catwoman (Lee Meriwether slinking in a skin-tight black bodysuit). The criminals are, naturally, out to conquer the world, but with a little help from their unending supply of utility belt devices (bat shark repellent, anyone?), our dynamic duo thwarts their nefarious plans at every turn. Since the TV show ran under 30 minutes an episode (with commercials), the 105-minute film runs a little thin--a little camp goes a long way--but fans of the small-screen show will enjoy the spoofing tone throughout. Leslie H. Martinson directs Lorenzo Semple's screenplay like a big-budget TV episode minus the cliffhanger endings. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight, As Campy As Ever!.......2007-04-15

The film adaptation of the hit ABC series of the 1960's has it all. Action, danger, romance, and comedy! Adam West and Burt Ward were at their best as Batman and Robin, Lee Meriwether was just as sexy as the Catwoman than Julie Newmar(who was unable to appear in the film due to a prior commitment), and Cesar Romero, Burgess Meridith and Frank Gorshin was hilariously excellent as the villains. The special features in the DVD has a mini-documentary featuring Adam and Burt talking about their days on the set of the Batman movie, and there's also a tour of the 1966 Batmobile as told by the man who made it possible, George Barris. I love this film, I have not seen it in years. It may not be the TV series that we wished for, but it is close enough!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for chidren.......2007-04-01

My 3 year old grandson loves Batman and Scooby Doo, so this couldn't have been better. He watches it over and over and is thoroughly entertained. It can fill up a rainy afternoon with fun and enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC PIECE OF HOKINESS.......2007-02-10

I like everything Batman, except for the sequels that followed the 1989 movie, and this is one of the best incarnations. Though it looks cheesy by todays standards, that's really what they were shooting for back in 1966. I loved the bonus features and especially the commentary by Adam West and Burt Ward who let the viewers know that they also were'nt taking this seriously. My favorite is when Batman and Robin are trying to separate the dehydrated dust and are wearing doctors masks and aprons and Adam West says "look at these two idiots." Also if the execs at Fox are reading these reviews, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ON HANDS AND KNEES, release the show on DVD!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Series is Better.......2007-01-21

I'm not a big fan of the dark, unhinged Batman of today. I prefer the Detective Comics of the 1930s-1960s. I have always loved the classic, campy "Batman" (1966-1968) series starring Adam West and Burt Ward.
Fox's movie is more and more illogical the older I get. Much of the events that took place in the feature film happened by chance. Alfred, Aunt Harriet, Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara have almost no part in the film. But overall, with the five most famous super villains--the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and the Catwoman--the film was a satisfactory one, even though it was extremely zany. I hope that Fox or whoever has the decency to release the TV series on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Nostalgia!.......2007-01-17

I had the pleasure of watching this movie -- and the accompanying TV series -- in two different, but equally enjoyable, phases: First, as a 4th grader when they were first released in the 60s -- when I took them at face value as super hero adventure stories; and later, as an adult, reveling in the campy humor and the droll, dead-pan delivery of Adam West. This is a very corny movie -- but in a good way! Lots of fun. I especially enjoyed watching it while listening to the commentary by West and Burt Ward.
And by the way, though I'm not a kid any more, I still want that Batmobile in my garage, and want to take the Bat Boat out for a high-speed run on the lake!

Description

"Right from the opening montage that juxtaposed scenes from the duo's careers and other world events, the message was clear-Simon & Garfunkel were sharing this show with their generation." (David Wild, Liner Notes) For an entire generation, the concert event of the new millennium was the 2003 Old Friends tour from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Their first national concert tour in two decades, performing songs that rank among the most memorable of the '60s, was a sold-out sensation in more ethan 30 cities across the country. Now many of those unforgettable performances are heard on the DVD Old Friends Live On Stage, as well as a 2-CD set and a Deluxe Edition with both the DVD and the CD's. The songs of Simon & Garfunkel have never sounded better.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-04-28

This DVD concert is soooo good. It is a an awesome musical journey back in time allowing the listener to experience some of the best folk songs every written. The stage, song choice, lighting, sound, etc. resulted in a mesmerizing show. "Bridge over troubled Waters" gave me Goosebumps. Buy it and re-live songs you know through a great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Great live for all region.......2007-02-01

I enjoyed this live a lot. Though I felt a little strange just after the beginning (probably mainly due to slow tempo of the songs), I found myself grooving as the show goes on!

Note that this is NOT the region 1 only disc. All region is supported.

3 out of 5 stars Simon & Garfunkel Old Friends.......2007-01-07

When I go to or purchase a concert, I like the artists to sing their songs as they were recorded. That's the way I fell in love with the music. So when I watched this dvd, it wasn't impressed. The Central Park concert was better in my opinion because, in general, they stuck to the original style of the songs. The quality of the picture, along with the fact that they are much younger, is also better.

5 out of 5 stars Old Friends or Central Park?.......2006-06-19

I own this DVD as well as the Concert in the Park DVD; I was also at both concerts -- each had a different feel, and each DVD has a different feel. Several reviewers have compared the two DVDs and, like most of them, I prefer the "Old Friends" DVD, which isn't to say that the Central Park concert is not worth owning.

The sound quality of Old Friends is superior, but that may be a function of the venue as well as of the updated recording technology -- at an outdoor concert, some of the sound is lost to the open air, while at a place like Madison Square Garden the sound is contained by the venue, and thus feels richer.

Though Simon & Garfunkel were backed up by a band in both concerts, the Central Park concert is more folky, with a peaceful outdoor concert feel (which is exactly what it was). The Old Friends concert, on the other hand, often seems to emphasize the rock aspect of "Folk Rock," which is a nice change from the Simon & Garfunkel sound I'm used to hearing. Its venue, better sound quality, and lighting effects, also give it more drama. On a flatscreen TV with excellent sound, the Old Friends concert provides the richer experience. My choice of which to watch, however, depends on my mood: I was at the Central Park concert the day before my first day of highschool, so if I'm feeling nostalgic I'll watch the Park concert; if I want more of an energetic, arena feel, I'll watch Old Friends.

As far as I remember, the only song they did at the Garden that was cut from the DVD was the Everly Brothers' "Let it Be Me." This isn't a big deal for me, though I'm sure some Everly Brothers fans aren't happy.

Other than this, there's little I can add to what's already been said about this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Words fail me!.......2006-05-26

These guys are awesome together. Someone should be writing new material and throwing it at Simon & Garfunkel to get them back together making music that we can all enjoy as much as their old stuff.

If there is anyone today who can play, sing, enjoy, perform, or compose music as good as this, I want to know who it is. Being from New Zealand, we don't get many opportunities to listen to music like this. I could have bought it here for NZ$40, but I saw it at Amazon for US$15 so ordered it without even a preview. Wow! It's 1:00am over her and I've just finished watching and listening the whole concert through, it was an absolute blast.

If good music makes you smile, sing along, and punch the air with joy, then you must have this DVD. I hope Simon & Garfunkel read this review and it encourages them to start afresh, because the world needs them to keep on!

Decades after the death of drummer John Bonham and, for all intents and purposes, the demise of the group, Led Zeppelin's popularity continues unabated--and why not, as long as they keep coming up with offerings as worthy as No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Unledded. Originally released on CD in 1994 and then in a remastered version simultaneously with this DVD, the 115-minute program (including bonus footage) was recorded on a London soundstage, in the hills of Snowdonia, Wales, and outdoors in Marrakech, Morocco. It finds guitarist Page, vocalist Plant, and an array of other musicians performing some new material, but for the most part, the repertoire focuses on their Led Zep legacy--not a surprise, considering that what they did together in that group was better than anything they've done separately, including some pretty good Plant solo efforts and Page's regrettable stint as a member of the Firm. Yet instead of simply parroting their Zeppelin period (and relying on tired warhorses like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love"), they've given the music new life, adding exotic instruments like the bodhran (an Irish drum) and the hurdy-gurdy (played by cranking a rosined wheel against a set of strings) to less familiar fare like "The Battle of Evermore" and "Gallow's Pole." Add to that three brilliant new songs performed with a quartet of Moroccan players, a full complement of strings from the London Metropolitan Orchestra (on "Since I've Been Loving You" and others), and a host of Egyptian percussion and strings on an epic version of "Kashmir" (also from the London session), and you've got a world music blend that is at times genuinely thrilling--especially for those with 5.1 Surround Sound capability. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT.......2007-02-07

If you would like to read my full review of this historic concert, please refer to the original 1994 CD album entitled "NO QUARTER" JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT UNLEDDED.

In my opinion, this live concert DVD which was filmed and broadcasted by MTV in 1994 as part of the new Unledded series, is a true testament and a wonderful tribute to a great band that was truly ahead of its time.

Please note that I am partially reviewing the new 2004 DVD release for this pre-review which should be included with my 1994 CD album review.

Please note that this historic concert is a celebration of LED ZEPPELIN'S music and is not in any way a LED ZEPPELIN reunion.

When you see and listen to certain live concert footage sequences such as the songs "Thank You," "What Is And What Should Never Be," "Since I've Been Loving You," "Gallows Pole," "Four Sticks" and the blistering breathtaking "Kashmir," PAGE & PLANT take LED ZEPPELIN'S Rocker's to another level and add more to the LED ZEPPELIN legend.

Also on this DVD edition, you will get to see and hear new mellower Rockin' rendition versions of LED ZEPPELIN'S most sacred classic songs such as the beautiful "The Rain Song," "Nobody's Fault But Mine," the breathtaking "No Quarter," "The Battle Of Evermore," "That's The Way" and the new beautiful PAGE/PLANT composition entitled "Wonderful One" which was written and dedicated to Plant's late son Karac Plant who died of a deadly virus during LED ZEPPELIN'S 1977 World Tour.

Overall, this is one hell of a concert which helps PAGE & PLANT set the record that has been haunting them for so many years, straight once and for all. As we all well remember, the LED ZEPPELIN saga and legend ended tragically in 1980. If you're not familiar with what happened towards the end of LED ZEPPELIN'S career, please refer to my review of LED ZEPPELIN'S last recorded studio CD album "IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR" released in 1979.

In my opinion, PAGE & PLANT were destined to reunite in order to change the bad note that ended LED ZEPPELIN'S glorious career and laid the band to rest permanently. This bad note was the result of the untimely death of John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham in September 1980. With this new PAGE & PLANT reunion band along with the recruitment comprising of Charlie Jones on bass and Michael Lee on drums, this new line-up has a more new fresh youthful look and has a lifeforce sound filled with raw power and energy that gives LED ZEPPELIN'S music a new sound not heard before. When you close your eyes, you can actually feel the spiritual presence of the late great John Bonham playing through Michael Lee's body and soul and transferring it to Lee's drum kit. With your eyes still closed, you also get the feeling that the spirit of LED ZEPPELIN is alive and performing one more time. I highly recommend that all of you, LED ZEPPELIN fan or not, to purchase this very special priceless gem. This DVD is Rock n' Roll history in the making and highlights the historic reunion of one of Rock's most beloved artists, MR. JIMMY PAGE & MR. ROBERT PLANT. So here's to you Jimmy & Robert. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my pre-review of my other original PAGE & PLANT review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT RULES. R.I.P Mr. John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham. R.I.P. LED ZEPPELIN (1968-1980) Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!.......2007-01-05

I bought this for my grandson's friend (age 15) who is a huge Led Zep fan. He literally jumped for joy! We all sat down to watch it and I was as enthralled as he was. It's a great dvd...music, settings, singing...it's got it all.

5 out of 5 stars awesome stuff.......2006-12-27

first off: why does everyone think this is Led Zeppelin? IT'S NOT! Perhaps the reason John Paul Jones wasn't asked to join in was due to the fact that his inclusion would cause world-wide hailings of a Led Zeppelin reunion, which this IS NOT. sure, having Jones along would not necessarily make this a performance of Led Zeppelin (that can never happen, Zeppelin is comprised solely of Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham, and nobody else), but the rabid attention of the press and fans would cause the whole thing to be misconstrued into something it wasn't. With that being said, this performance by PAGE & PLANT is superb.

2 out of 5 stars Jimmy Page on xanax.......2006-11-07

Very disapointed. Couldn't even watch the whole thing. Led Z moves me, this tapes left me cold.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2006-11-03

Three places, three atmospheres, but only one powerful musical experience. Balanced and beautiful Moroccan and Indian elements interact with Jimmy Page's guitar and Robert Plant's voice in these incredible live performances of Led Zeppelin's best, and Page y Plant's beginnings.

This feature-length tape began as a three-episode story line on the animated TV series, a superhero crossover where Bruce Wayne visits Metropolis and the Dark Knight meets the Man of Steel for the first time. The two heroes mix like oil and water, the law-and-order Superman suspicious of Batman's rather ruthless methods; but they form an uneasy partnership when Lex Luthor and the Joker team up to take on the duo. To add a personal dimension to the already edgy rivalry, Wayne romances Lois Lane under Clark Kent's very nose. The stylized animation and sharp design of the TV series give the limited animation a sleek, smooth quality and an energetic sense of movement. Timothy Daly supplies the voices for Clark Kent and (in a deeper register) Superman, with Kevin Conroy performing the same vocal trick for Bruce Wayne/Batman; but Dana Delany only has to worry about one persona as Lois Lane. The once-and-future Luke Skywalker, cult film star turned voice actor Mark Hamill, provides the Joker's cackling banter. --Sean Axmaker.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cartoon movies I've ever watched.......2007-04-23

Just thought you'd like to know, this movie was actually shown in 2 episodes of the Superman, the animated series. So if you're looking to buy the entire Superman,TAS, which I HIGHLY recommend, then DON'T BUY this movie as you'll be buying it twice! Getting back to this review. What else can be said but that it was a great great movie! Pairing superman & batman and both finding out each other secret identity. Plus the battle both Superman & Batman had with Luthor & the Joker was classic! I won't tell you what Batmen went up against in this movie, but it was verry similar to a battle that another well known superhero, Spiderman, had. Either way, it was a great battle and one of the best parts of this movie. The Lois Lane storyline was good also. It wasn't too violent so I watched this with my then 5 year old son and he LOVED IT! After it was done, he wanted to see it again. All I can say is that this cartoon brought back alot of memories of long ago when superhero cartoons were fun to watch. It wasn't watered down or politically corrected like the SuperFriends were, because you were able to see the heros using ALL of their powers. If you're a fan of good superhero cartoons, then this cartoon, (which again, you can see in it's entirety in the Superman, TAS)is well worth buying!

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-03-08

Bought this for my son who is 4 and he loved the interaction between Batman and Superman. As a mom, i found it interesting and not boring at all. Joker is really funny. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars When two heroes meet at last!.......2006-12-15

The Joker (voiced by Mark Hamil) has hatched an evil scheme as he finds a special object that contains kryptonite as he heads to Metropolis to make a deal with Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown) to help take down Superman (voiced by Tim Daley). Bruce Wayne (voiced by Kevin Conroy) heads down to Metropolis to track him down as he meets Clark Kent and falls for the lovely Lois Lane as only he as Batman along with Superman can foil Luthor's and Joker's diabolical plan.

Wonderfully animated and fantastic full length feature animated movie that finally has the two greatest superheroes from DC meeting each other for the first time in animation. Bruce Timm (producer and co-director of the Batman and Superman 90's cartoons) has done it again with another winner in the Batman animated movie chronicles combining it with his "Superman The Animated Series", fans of both heroes shouldn't miss this movie.

The DVD doesn't offer much extras except for a game, interview, music montage, trailers and cast and crew info but if your into Batman and Superman get this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Anyone up for a LIVE-ACTION "Batman/Superman Movie"?.......2006-11-30

I am. Anyway, to start out it's good fun to see Superman (Tim Daly) and Batman (Kevin Conroy) team up in one movie. There's nothing extra on the VHS version as far as trailers are concerned. But you can still enjoy the movie. "The New Batman Adventures" is much more violent than "Batman: the Animated Series", as for "Superman: The Animated Series" is less offensive than "TNBA" (if at all).

Trivia: Did you know that this movie was originaly three episodes of "Superman: The Animated Series" titled "World's Finest"?

5 out of 5 stars The Batman/Superman movie is really good!.......2006-10-01

The Batman/Superman movie is really good! Batman/ Bruce Wane comes to Metropolis to make a business deal with Lex Luthor. Bruce Wayne is also in Metropolis becuase he wants to date Lois Lane. This story creates tension between Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane. Meanwhile the Joker and Harley Quinn are free and they make deal with Lex Luthor to get rid of Superman! This is great animated movie! Bruce Timm did a good job with the story and characters! Highly Recommended! A+

It's not what you'd call high art, but there are some highly enjoyable moments in this nicely packaged box set, featuring nine complete shows (plus ample bonus material) spread out over three discs.

Beginning as a summer replacement in 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour earned its own regular time slot that same year, running for three straight seasons and then returning in 1976 (as The Sonny & Cher Show), after the couple's divorce. The show's formula, which had already been established both onstage and on the small screen (their '69 pilot episode is among the extra features), includes plenty of music (duets, Cher's solo performances in typically outlandish Bob Mackie gowns, various guest shots); lots of shtick (consisting mostly of Cher's put-downs of the minimally talented but good-natured Sonny); and sketches and skits (ranging from lame to inspired, including a mock-opera based on All in the Family and starring Metropolitan Opera tenor Robert Merrill as a warbling Archie Bunker). Guests range from the obvious (TV stalwarts like Harvey Korman, Ruth Buzzi, and Don Knotts) to the downright weird (then-California governor Ronald Reagan). It's all fairly middlebrow, but Sonny & Cher's unpretentious, unself-conscious charm carries it; and once in a while everything congeals into one surreally entertaining package, like the '72 show featuring the Jackson 5 (led, of course, by Michael, who was then 14 and still apparently normal), who are followed to the stage by Reagan (telling jokes, sort of) and singer-actor Howard Keel, veteran of numerous movie musicals.

Bonus features include 2003 audio commentary by a nostalgic Cher, interviews with the producers, the '69 pilot, bios, discographies, and a show history. The DVD set also comes with a music-only CD, featuring live performances of "The Beat Goes On" and "I Got You Babe." --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Variety TV Show Gold.......2007-01-04

If you haven't seen a TV variety show, this is the one to see. Music, comedy and technical effects of the day made this show a "must see."

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-12-11

Sonny and Cher were one of the best variety show duos ever to inhabit TV land, so I was saddened that this DVD collections is not really the "best" that they've done.

Don't get me wrong, there are many great clips in here... but... the producers of this DVD package have decided to include full shows (with lots of boring stuff I didn't really care about) instead of concentrating on the star, Cher!

What I would like to see is a 'best of' compilation with all the best guest-stars, musical numbers, outfits, etc...

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Variety Show.......2006-11-30

As far as I'm concerned, these two set the bar for the slew of variety shows that followed in the 70's (though I'm well aware there were predecessors). Their opening song and banter were always entertaining. The skits were actually funny (most of the time) and who didn't love the medley portion of the show (complete with matching outfits and Sonny busting out some lame dance moves). They had really good writers, regulars (including Steve Martin and Teri Garr), great guest stars, and groovy clothes that put the Brady Bunch to shame. Little Chastity closed out the show with them, and it was just a nice little, sweet family (little did we know).
However, as an elementary aged child at the time, I had an odd crush on Sonny Bono (which to this day I will never live down with the family). I get a big kick out of watching this 70's time capsule (and call me crazy, but I still thik Sonny was a cute little guy). My only complaint is that they didn't put the show out in individual seasons. I realize it's hard to get the rights to the music, but I'd love to at least see the 1st three seasons in their entirety....I can do without the post divorce show (though the skits were funny--it didn't gel). Shame it didn't work out between these two--they worked really well together during their relationship.

4 out of 5 stars "Set is Fabulous with the Exception of Final Season!".......2006-05-14

I have been wanting to buy this set for a long, long time since I grew up anxiously awaiting each and every episode of The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour AND the Cher Show. Since I hadn't seen any of the episodes (like commentator Cher) since their original run in the early seventies,I noticed some good (and bad) stuff about the show.

The first season was a dress rehearsal in many ways; the editing was sloppy and continual "laughing" breakups from the lead couple during most of the skits got to be annoying after awhile. The best season seemed to be in 1973 with the episodes where Chastity comes out at the start of each show and newsworthy skits are performed on a cartoon train. You don't see the "cue cards" in the audience as much during the opening singing and monologues and Cher's vocals and delivery are more polished than in the first season especially. Sonny still stinks however (LOL) ... can't seem to act without looking off to the side to read his lines off the cue cards which director Art Fisher should have done something about but obviously didn't for one reason or another.

My favorite segements of the show are the "Vamp number," Lady Luck (another type of "Vamp sequence" in Season 3 ), Laverne at the Laundromat. (Cher was SO FUNNY along with Terri Garr and this showed her natural inclination towards comedy and acting) I really enjoyed watching a manic Sonny share the spotlight with "the hippest woman on earth" during the musical performances with their band backing them(which the final reunion season lacked incidentally)-their medley of "Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show" and "Tamborine Man"-SO COOL!!!! On the sour side the "Opera" skits with Morgan Freeman annoyed the heck out of me as well as Sonny's Pizza. Cher's solos were very good-faves include "Half Breed," "Way of Love," and "Am I Blue?"
The first two discs were good to great especially disc 2!!

My only complaint is the chemistry and work on Disc 3 and the show they did after both their solo shows went off the air. They lacked the chemistry of the earlier shows playing it safe (of course they were divorced but they could have worked a little harder for an audience and ratings) the opening songs were only fair, the "Cutesie News" was totally stupid, liked the "War of the Sexes" with Sonny acting the sissy man he was (LOL) and Cher being very K.D. Lang....haha!! This season did not have them singing together which I really missed and Cher's solo's had her dressed to the nine's in typical Bob Mackie extravagant outfits but song selections for her were mediocre at best.

I loved Sonny and Cher-wish the CHER SHOW would come out in it's entirety as I thought she did a GREAT JOB on her own and that it was better than Sonny and Cher actually and more relaxed in many ways. She underestimated herself I think-however I would love to see all the original Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour episodes-Seasons 1 to 3 on disc-I will pass on the last show they did together. It just showed indifference and the writing and rapport was just not the same.

No offense to this great site but I would never pay almost 50 bucks for this-got it for half that somewhere else-maybe I'd pay it for for all the shows but not for nine episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Please Make a Season By Season DVD.......2006-04-30

I would give anything to have every season of each show from The First Season to the last season when they came back after their divorce. I would also love to have The Cher SHow on a season by season (What was it 2 seasons?) Anyway, I was so impressed by her when I was a child. I would entertain my family doing impressions of her singing (and yes, I can still sound like her LOL) from Dark Lady to Gypsies, Tramps, ad Theives and the opening monologue. The gowns and make up and jewelry are my favorite and why I love Bob Mackie and Carol Burnette Shows as well!!!!My daughter is 3 and she loves to watch these DVD's. I have both the Ultimate and the Christmas Collection. So please, whoever has the rights, put them out there in their entirety. The Sonny and Cher Show, the Sonny and Cher Comedy Revue, and The Cher Show.

Not for the faint-hearted. Baise-Moi defies categories--it features pornographic sex scenes and violent shootings, but it won't fit anyone's definition of an erotic thriller. After separately committing murders, two French women join together in a spree of crime and sex. Because both have endured abuse at the hands of men, the movie seems to start as a self-righteous parable--but the women's actions quickly degenerate into amoral, near random killings, with women shot as casually as men. One reviewer described Baise-Moi as "Thelma & Louise with actual penetration," but it's actually Thelma & Louise without Hollywood sentiment. By refusing to condemn or justify the protagonists' actions, and by depicting both sex and violence with unglamorous realism, Baise-Moi forces the viewer to respond in the most contradictory and basic ways. You may find the lead characters surprisingly sympathetic. Jarring, unsettling, and well worth watching. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Like a train wreck in slow motion.......2007-06-10

I found it intriguing that Karen Lancaume later committed suicide, which may offer some insight into the lives of the characters in the film. The film appears to have been made by the types of characters it depicts, there is a strong sense of numbness and desperation. The main characters are disconnected. It's ironic the film makers decided to exploit the actresses in a film about two women who rage against their own exploitation. Scenes come across as forced, literally and figuratively, and there is constant music throughout, possibly to trick you into thinking you're watching something worthwhile. The soundtrack is pretty good. The film quality is poor, the "porn" scenes are very brief and unerotic, and the acting is unconvincing. I had a much more enjoyable time watching the uncut version of Doom Generation.

5 out of 5 stars Pulls no punches.......2007-04-30

This is a well-acted film that doesn't pull the punches when depicting sex scenes. This makes the film all the more striking. A woman is raped and we see the actual penetration, the spit used for lubrication and the like.

Scenes like this might appear in porno flicks, but here they serve to show it as it really is, not a fade out or left to our imagination.

If REAL sex- close up- offends you, don't get this film. But if you want to see what a movie can be with no cut scenes and the betrayal of sex close up and often brutal, see it!

4 out of 5 stars ...powerful rape murder chaos..........2007-04-15

as all others have noted it is a pretty hardcore movie one that you are never sure how others will react to it... it has recieved both good and negative reviews... I quite enjoyed its frank honest brutal portrayal of violence and sex...it does at times feel like a porn movie with all its explicit sex scenes including male masturbation, fellatio, cunnilingus and actual intercourse(vaginal penetration)...the rape scene was brutal but very realistic and the ensuing violence graphic and uncompromiising...it is definetly not a movie for everyone...not erotic or sensual...but for fans of graphic sex and violence this might be up your alley...

3 out of 5 stars Gritty isn't always good........2007-01-31

Gritty, really gritty films are a rarity in mainstream film. Not that this film is mainstream mind you, it's an independent punk film that means to shock, and it does to a degree. Now in all fairness, gritty isn't easy to do, and this film has its share of shortcomings.

Altogether it felt very amateur. At times I couldn't help but feel like I was watching a b-movie. The cinematography is lacking and the dialogue is lame in most scenes. After a strong opening (the rape scene), I found myself getting bored about 30 minutes in, but it did pick up near the end. A somewhat diverse punk soundtrack helps to keep this film together.

Some are saying "this is an important film and must be seen," but I disagree. In this case Hollywood did it better than these indie filmmakers, art house loses and Thelma and Louise wins. Thelma and Louise was maybe not so much a pure expression of feminist anger, but it still does a good job of putting the woman in the position of power, and kept the audience smiling throughout. Baise-Moi puts the female in a physical and sexual place of power, and does it very explicitly. In short, gritty doesn't always mean better.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-01-04

I THINK THIS MOVIE WILL HURT A VERY SENSITIVE FEELINGS, BUT IF YOU ARE READY TO SEE EVERYTHING THEN THIS MOVIE IS FOR YOU. I WILL EVEN THINK THIS IS THE KIND OF EROTIC MOVIE TO WATCH WITH YOUR HUSBAND ON A RAINY NIGHT.

3 out of 5 stars Acceptable movie.......2007-06-13

Well, I got to admit it is not the best movie from these guys.
Lucky for me that I friend of mine bought from me. Didn't like very much...

2 out of 5 stars Barely OK...........2007-05-07

This is not a particularly good movie, even for die hard Cheech and Chong fans. I really like their first 4 films, and this one starts out pretty well. It has that slow, leisurely feel that the other Tommy Chong directed films do, and some of the scenes are hilarious, but it's a cheat at the end, where they just fill out the film with a 20 minute concert. While much of the concert footage is good, it feels tacked on. Cheech and Chong just wanted to pad their film out to a feature length running time with it. There are some surreal moments in the film, which makes it interesting, but overall it's really disappointing because of how they just seem to quit at the end of the film. It's really lazy, haphazard, and just plain unprofessional.

4 out of 5 stars Another great Cheech & Chong film.......2006-03-09

Not as good as the first one, but still pretty funny. As far as I can tell, there's not a whole lot of plot happening. But it's a great movie all the same. I really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT !.......2006-01-31

As usual these guys will make you laugh your guts out, no need to say more...go for it!

2 out of 5 stars Only a few more laughs.......2005-01-17

By the time I came to this movie, I had already gotten there first three. Up in Smoke was fantastic, Next Movie was great, Nice Dreams was good, this was was pretty poor. They get pretty desparate at some points here, and they constantly repeat chracters we've seen already.
The Low points are when they attempt to impersonate two homosexuals (badly), the astronaut which is Cheech miming for 3 minutes of in space, and then pretentds to jerk off at the end. Also, when they got to "Harry Palms" masterbating Champion, that was about as low and unfunny as you could get, just awful. All the points in the stand-up go on about a minute too long, including the fake nightclub. The people laughing at Cheech doing a redneck, had to have been payed actors.
There are some good points... not that many though. Maybe the wrestling scene, and some of the scene with Chong recording with a videocamera in the hotel room. They don't seem to do much in this. I wanted something different, which is what I got, but I didn't think it would be this horrible. These guys can do better.

5 out of 5 stars The Road Warriors Were the BEST.......2007-04-20

Great DVD for any true Road Warriors fan. I remember watching some of the matches on the DVD as a kid. I thought I'd never get to see those again. The nostalgia and background info on the Warriors makes this a must have.

5 out of 5 stars What a DVD!.......2006-11-24

I was a Road Warrior fan back when they were in the AWA. In fact I have an original VHS tape they released of them when they were in the AWA. SO to see this coming out was great. The documentary was almost tear jerking in the end and the extras are awesome. They have matches from Georgia Championship Wrestling, NWA, AWA, Japan, WCW, and the WWF/WWE. I loved it and I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RUSH!!!.......2006-07-10

If you only know the Legion Of Doom as the team of Heidenrich & Animal...then you really need to peep this one because the ORIGINAL Road Warriors are one of the greatest tag teams of all time. In a time where promotions were based around single wrestlers, they became the attraction people wanted & payed to see. Roadwarrior Hawk, Roadwarrior Animal, and manager Precious Paul Ellering...the Road Warriors.

The documentry starts with stories of Hawk & Animal growing up & working out at the gym which lead to them being trained as wrestlers. The evolution of their look & characters are discussed along with their relationship with manager Paul Ellering. Their stints in both Georgia Championship Wrestling and the AWA including fueds with famous teams like The Crusher & Baron Von Raschke, Fabolous Freebirds, Midnight Express, Four Horsemen, and the Koloffs are looked at in detail along with funny stories about Dick The Brusier & The Crusher and the Fabolous Ones. Their first run in the WWE goes over the fued with Demolition and if they were Road Warrior imitatiors & their historic SummerSlam '91 match. But just like everything in life, all good things must come to an end and that's where this documentry starts to go downhill as Hawk's problems & actions outside the ring led to the breakup of the Road Warriors, a brief discussion of the Japanese version of the Road Warriors, and their return to WCW that didn't work out well. Returning to WWE as L.O.D. 2000, the entire storyline involving Droz, and the death of Roadwarrior Hawk round out this documentry.

DVD extras are spread amongst two disc as various interviews, 3 Confidental pieces, additional comments from Michael Hayes & Paul Ellering, and the old school Road Warriors music video are here in addition to various matches from their career. In addition to three "squash" matches (including one featuring a young Arn Anderson) where they just destroyed their opponetts are matches with alternative commentary with Jim Ross & Animal facing wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan & Tenryn, Bisco Brothers, Magnum T.A. & Ronnie Garvin in the Crockett Cup finals, and their AWA title win against Baron Von Raschke & The Crusher. Larry & Curt "Mr. Perfect" Henning, Fabolous Freebirds, the Koloffs in a chain match, two matches featuring the Midnight Express (including the Starrcade Scaffold match), Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard, Demolition, their SummerSlam '91 title victory against Nasty Boys, Hart Foundation, Money Inc., Sting & Lex Luger, and their final tag team title victory against Godwinns round out the additional matches on this DVD set.

Bottom line is that if you are a fan of tag team wrestling & classic "old school" footage then this DVD is a necessity.

5 out of 5 stars Wrestling Must Have!.......2006-04-25

This DVD is another example of how the WWF (not WWE!) is bring back classic wrestling to long time fans. This DVD chronicals the history of the Road Warriors from their beginnings to end. It is great to see the real inside information on the team straight from Animal, Paul Ellering and others close to them. A great DVD! The only thing I would have like to see more of is the TBS interviews and the time they jumped Dusty Rhoades and put the spike in his eye.

I don't think I find any matches against the Steiner Brothers. I also hope to get some of their early matches in the AWA. Some of the early matches included on this volume are not that "extraordinary." There are no matches against Sgt Slaughter, Crusher Blackwell, Greg Gagne, Jim Brunzell, Steiner Brothers, Samoan Swat Team, Fantastics, Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez, Tower of Doom matches, etc. The match where they teamed with Sting and turned against him after the match would be essential. More matches from their numerous Japan tours would be great. I want to watch the match where they won the NWA International tag team championship in Japan and brought the belts back to the US. I had watched a few matches where a Power Warrior substituted for Animal and wrestled along side Hawk against the Steiners. There were also matches where Animal and Hawk wrestled against The Great Muta and Rick Steiner. I remember reading Japanese wrestling magazines showing the Road Warriors went fishing with the New Japan Pro Wrestling stars Muta, Chono, etc. with the Steiners. There was also a match where the RW teamed up with Hulk Hogan against Sting, Dr Death Steve Williams and Terry Gordy. Back in the US, there was a singles match where Ric Flair supposedly use a spike from Animal's shoulder pad on Animal's eye. I also want to see how the Powers of Pain hurt Animal's eye in a weight-lifting showdown(?) that resulted in surgery. There was a cage match where they were wrestling against the Samoan Swat Team (I think), and suddenly the Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) stormed in and put handcuff on Animal and threw Hawk into the cage bursting him open. If my memory was right, that led to an unlikely match later: RW + Midnight Express vs. SST + Freebirds. There was also a match against Dr Death Steve Williams and Mike Rotundo (or Terry Gordy) where Nikita Koloff was the guest referee. In a NWA studio taping, Ric Flair was wrestling in the ring, Hawk interfered and attacked Flair. When Animal tried to enter the ring, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson hit him from behind. Then they piledrived him on the concrete floor outside the ring. After that, they ganged up on Hawk and both were left unconscious. I really missed those 80's matches where the Road Warriors slided into the ring and just kept pounding and throwing their opponents around. These were not in this volume. I would also like to see Sunny. Hopefully they will be included in an upcoming Road Warriors DVD.

The Dark Knight and his cohorts Robin and Batgirl do battle with a scarily sympathetic archvillain in this superior animated movie that both kids and adults can watch without feeling insulted. While not quite as inspired as the previous Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which is still the best portrayal of the title character ever to grace the screen), this well-plotted, awesomely stylish wall-to-wall actioner perfectly captures the fundamental essence of the classic comics, and makes the treatment of the same characters in the painful live-action Batman & Robin look even more ineptly misguided. Simply put, this is how the Masked Manhunter of Gotham should be depicted. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Freeze...did he really do anything criminal?.......2007-02-13

I truly enjoyed this particular Batman episode. It was action-packed. The animation and graphics were just fantastic!

Mr. Freeze, a.k.a Victor Fries, is somewhere in the Artic, along with his wife, Nora, who is in a cyrogenic (sp?) state. Nora is suffering from some heart disease. Mr. Freeze, who truly loves his wife, has put her in a capsule to slow down the disease until a cure has been found.

However, when something happens that threatened the health of Nora, Mr. Freeze must act fast to save her life. Mr. Freeze stalks Gotham City, along with his 2 polar bears. He kidnaps a doctor, a former colleague of Mr. Freeze. With the doctor's help, they were able to pinpoint who shares the same rare blood type as Nora's...and that is Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl.

Dick Grayson (Robin) and Barbara are out on a date at a swing dance club. Mr. Freeze attacks the place and kidnaps Barbara. Dick tries to save Barbara but ultimately fails.

Batman and Robin investigate immediately. Their investigation led them to discover why Mr. Freeze is in town and why Barbara has been kidnapped. The problem is where is Barbara hidden. Time is essential.

At first, you'll look at Mr. Freeze as this vicious villian. However, after reflecting, you'll see that he shares the same frustration like the rest of us on the medical system. His wife is slowly dying. She can be saved with some medical treatment. However, the waiting list is long. The cure has yet to be discovered, despite the donations of millions of dollars. In the end, Mr. Freeze was simply a desperate man who wanted to save his wife.

My favorite part was the end, where everyone is helping each other despite what damages have been done. However, was it enough to save Nora? That's for you to watch and find out.

*SubZero* is one of the best animated shows that I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Piece That Spotlights Dick Grayson.......2007-02-11

Mr. Freeze is up to his old tricks again. For the last time, he's going to try and save the life of his comatose wife through criminal means.

Victor Fries, now turned into the tragically cold Mr. Freeze, enlists the help of a villainous master surgeon to conduct an organ transplant on his wife Nora. When there are no available organs, Freeze commands him to GET one. And the one person in Gotham who matches Nora's blood type is Barbara Gordon, secretly Batgirl.

The early minutes of the film present us with a posh shindig, to which Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson are invited. They show up looking dapper in their tuxedoes, both with one thing on their minds but in different ways. Bruce is womanizing the beautiful female guests and Dick is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the object of his affections: Barbara.

Dick and Barbara begin what one can only call a budding romance, which stays canon with comic book lore. While the two always flirted and hinted at becoming involved during their adolescence, they never really started dating until reaching their early 20's.

Sometime later while Dick and Barbara are on a date at a swing dance club, Mr. Freeze has tracked her down, bringing along two fierce polar bears as "henchmen." They tear up the place and Dick does a pretty good job trying to protect Barbara, but I know he's better than the display he put on. He's Robin for crying out loud and I expected more of a fight. "Pretty good" just isn't good enough for Batman's second as far as I'm concerned. So, to make a long story short, after a tricky car/motorcycle chase through the outskirts of Gotham Hills, Freeze gets away with his hostage.

Of course, Batman and Robin eventually sniff out their whereabouts through sheer detective work, which is nice to see from time to time. Just as Barbara is on the verge of escape, she hits a wall and the Dynamic Duo have to officially bail her out of trouble. The last sequence is absolutely beautiful. Everyone is trapped on an oil refinery in the middle of the Atlantic and, through negligence and dramatic influence on part of the writers, it's going to explode soon. Fighting fires, polar bears, Mr. Freeze and a trigger-happy doctor, Batman, Robin and Barbara Gordon manage to save themselves, the day, and a few lives in one spectacular finish with a happy ending.

The artwork is sometimes good, sometimes wonderful. I had the feeling that there was a different artist in the first half than in the second - with the second half being better by leaps and bounds. It was almost as if there's a seperate person handling the animation when Dick and Bruce are in costume. Either way, no real complaints here. The story was dead on and the voice-work presented the usual kick-butt results that we've come to expect from the Batman cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real Batman and Robin if Tim Buton would have cotinued it........2007-01-21

If Tim Burton and Michael Keaton would have continued the live action films or aleast Christopher Nolan (from Batman Begins) this would be the real Batman and Robin. In my opinion this should have replaced Batman and Robin, and came on the big screen. It has everything you want in a Batman film. It has a gothic dark gritty look like Batman, Batman Returns, and the all famous Batman Mask of the Phantasm. It also has a good story, nice action and touch ups on the animation, a very good dialog & atmospere. So if you have Batman and Robin, and don't really like it much get rid of it and replace it with a real Batman film called Batman and Mr.Freeze Sub Zero.

4 out of 5 stars Winter...has come at last!.......2007-01-04

This movie is the second animated feature from the Batman series. As far as movie plot is concerned, Mr. Freeze's wife is on her last leg, some sort of heart failure has put her life in danger. Freeze not being one to be put on a waiting list decides that since there isn't a living donor available, he'll make his own out of a live one, Barbara Gordon. Enter both Batman and Robin(who was either still with the circus or at college in Mask of the Phantasm), step up to stop Freeze.

As far as the animated Batman movies go, I've never truly disappointed, I'm just not a big Mr. Freeze fan. My personal favorite villian is the Joker, but I don't even really consider Freeze a villian up until the Gotham Knights series. He's just an incredibly intelligent man pushed by his world into his current position. However, if you want good animation, and really good story, and Excellent voice acting, then this is your movie.

If you haven't even heard of the animated series, I'd recommend a few episodes first, or Mask of the Phantasm.

'Till Amazon asks me to do this again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better "Batman" movies.......2006-09-28

"Subzero" is one of my favorite "Batman" movies, because of Mr. Freeze. Using traditional 2D animation, 3D CGI (Which looked cheesy) and a good story, they created a perfect conclusion to "Batman: The Animated Series". I didn't expect much since it was a direct-to-video release, but it was a theatrical-type movie that was very good. Overall, this is a must buy/rent.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars : margot/rudolf 's swan lake !!!!.......2007-07-04

i hv own this swan lake dvd for three yrs, but never thought about writing a review until now, why?
after i bought the dvd ( margot/rudof ), and watching it almost a dozen times either by myself or introduce it to a female friend, it ALWAYS made me cry at the end of act IV, never fail.
so,last week, i spent 40,000 of my precious united award miles, flew almost 12 hrs ( two stops, delayed 2 and 3 hrs here and there, etc)from california to new york to see ABT's ( american ballet theatre ) swan lake procuction at lincoln center.
boy, I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!
why? as usual:
act I's folk dance, i can tolerate it like everyone else,
act II ,III i wasn't very happy with it already, but, i still have hope for the final act,but then when it comes to
act IV, the production has cut it almost into half !
what a shame.
hence, i recommand margot/rudof 's "swan lake" to anyone who is interested in purchasing a good dvd, never an " ABT " swan lake :)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Nureyev DVDs.......2007-06-01

This Swan Lake is one of the best I have ever seen. Though the Nureyev staging is very different from the "typical" staging, his performance is unrivaled. He carries the Pas de Cinq in Act I and does an amazing job in the Black Swan Pas de Deux of Act III. Fonteyn is also very good, though she is admittedly past the peak of her career. For all Nureyev fans, this is his best commercially available performance.

5 out of 5 stars A Lass Unparalleled!.......2007-01-21

I first saw Fonteyn in a live performance in 1968. Of course I had seen her on television but was not prepared for the impact of a theatre experience.I was stunned. She was dancing in Giselle with Nureyev. Their performance was sublime.

Nureyev had transformed the role of the male dancer, but it was Fonteyn in my opinion who held the essence of ballet. So of course I bought this video as a record of her art.

At first viewing I found the close up Nureyev a little narcisstic but this did not detract from the quality of the first act.

I was overwhelemed with the dancing in act two and the rapport between Odette and Siegfried has never been matched. Fonteyn's dancing is simple, precise, and without affectation. There is no over extension which one sees today and which I find rather more suitable to the gymnasium then the stage. Her placement is extraordinary, the poise of her head and lovely port de bras that has even tho this day no equal. As an example see her in Les Sylphides in the Prelude solo (An Evening with the Royal Ballet) when just running her arms move as though there are no bones!

Her first entrance captures the whole essence of the ballet. A swan queen who has been tranformed into a graceful young maiden. One is not aware of technique so wll absorbed is it into the whole performance; wonderful arabesques and balances culminating in the great pas de deux which should be mandatory viewing for any aspiring Odette. Not to be copied but as an inspiration for elegiac dancing.

In the third act Fonteyn subtley portrays the role of Odile-with flashing eyes and and a different poise of her head. After all Siegfried has to be able to recognise that this must be Odette, the woman to whom he has sworn undying love in act two. So Odile cannot be the complete opposite in character. This Fontyen shows as no other. Her solo dancing has just the right amount of speed and attack coupled with wonderful turns and balances.

In the final act we see the renunion of Odette and Siegfried and the glorious dancing and emotion builds to the tragic ending of Siegfired drowning in the lake and the hopelessness of Odette as she realises that all is lost.

This version of the ballet is a complete blending of dance and dramatic interpretation of a timeless story and not to be missed by anyone who loves the magic of dance.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Very Favorite Swan Lakes........2006-06-15

Nureyev had a wonderfully keen practical and artistic sense of how to produce the classical ballets. Among other things, he realized the merits of enlarging the role of the male dancer, as did Balanchine, his quote to the contrary notwithstanding!(Male dancers who danced for him that I have trained with, tell me that when he said ballet is all about women, he was mostly referring to the concept of partnering, where the woman is prominently displayed; he enjoyed working with male dancers very much, as we can see in his choreography.) In this version, both principal dancers are given a great deal of choreography and, as one would expect from one of the world's most famous ballet duos, they dance magnificently! Margot Fonteyn was always the quintessential ballerina, both on stage and off. She was also a great balletic actress and did not like to be disturbed backstage during a ballet because she would stay in character. She always peformed at her best, right up to the end of her very long career.
Some people have been surprised at the closeup of Nureyev in this at the begining of the first act; it shows the starkness of his makeup. Actually, this type of makeup is often used for this role, but we usually don't see it in closeup! It looks good at a distance. It is all part of the fantasy aspect of Swan Lake.
Especially noteworthy is the adagio Nureyev dances at the end of act one. Many dancers have bought this version just to see and study this! It is one of the greatest moments in classical ballet!
Nureyev's handling of the corps de ballet is also fantastic. I loved the geometric patterns he sets for them. The corps also dances with great precision and passion.
The only subdued aspect of this version is that of the Rothbart character. He is reduced to just a character role here. Nureyev liked to have important character, non-dancing , roles in his ballets for balance, no doubt.
This recent transfer by DG is marvelous, both visually and acoustically. I highly recommend this classic performance as a traditional Swan Lake.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed review.......2005-12-29

Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. No other ballet partnership is as legendary -- the fiery Russian defector and the graceful, aging English ballerina formed a bond on and off the stage that for several years practically defined romantic ballet. Thus, for this very reason, hardcore balletomanes should get this dvd. Many of us (including me) were too young to have seen Nureyev and Fonteyn live, so these videos are the only example to dissect the legendary partnership. However, caveat emptor: this is NOT a "typical" Swan Lake by any means. You can argue that there is no "typical" Swan Lake -- the original production in 1877 was a failure. Some of the music went missing. After Tchaikovksy's death, the choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov restaged Swan Lake, and that version more or less is the Swan Lake audiences know today. There's lots of music, so most versions of Swan Lake
use the "traditional" pieces.

Nevertheless, there are some different traditions of Swan Lake. In the Russian productions, the outcome is usually "happy" -- Rothbart is killed, and Siegfried and Odette are alive. In the productions used "everywhere else," Odette and Siegfried leap into the lake, and are reunited in the otherworld. I prefer the second ending personally, because I think it better matches both the story (the happy ending was enforced by the Tsar, and seems tacked on), and the music as well.

Rudolf Nureyev's 1966 film, however, is unlike any other Swan Lake I've ever seen. First of all, from the opening closeup (of Siegfried in blue eyeshadow and red lipstick) you realize this film is not going to follow Balanchine (and classical ballet's) creed of "ballet is woman." The first act is redesigned to incorporate a lot of solos and dance opportunities for Siegfried (Nureyev). The first act usually ends with Siegfried picking up his bow and arrow and going hunting with Benno. In this film, there is a long elegiac solo for Siegfried (using music that's usually used in act 2). Since this solo has since become rather common in Swan Lake productions, it doesn't bother me that much. Actually, in this version of Swan Lake, there is no Benno, so one of the things missing from this Swan Lake is the first act Pas de Trois.

More bothersome is Act 2. Nureyev dares to tinker with the famous Act II choreography by Lev Ivanov. In the famous Odette/Siegfried Adagio, the melody is repeated with the cello, but this repeat is rather abruptly interrupted by a solo for Siegfried. Most of the famous "Love Duet" is there but I don't like the sudden switch to a solo for Siegfried. I prefer the "traditional" ending to the pas de deux.

And one also notices that Fonteyn, as graceful and lovely as she is, is at times unable to cope with the famously demanding Odette/Odile role. For instance, Odette's solo in Act II usually ends with a series of turns and then Odette stands on poi
