Cheri Oteri breathed bracing fresh air into the seasons she appeared on Saturday Night Live, and created memorable characters both absurd and delightful. This 78-minute disc contains samples of some of her signature performances, including the preternaturally peppy cheerleader, Arianna, paired with a strapping Will Ferrell. (Ever tried to lead a cheer at the team's…swim meet? Arianna never met a challenge she couldn't conquer.) Oteri also takes on media icon Barbara Walters, satirized decades earlier by the incomparable Gilda Radner as Baba Wawa. Oteri's impersonation both pays homage to Radner's and takes it to a new level of absurdity; Oteri's Walters is a randy, name-dropping old coot who doesn't miss a beat--or an opportunity to aggrandize herself ("I was horseback riding the other day with Saddam Hussein…"). Don't miss the brief skit where Walters tries to have phone sex with a nonplussed Tom Brokaw. Other signature characters include Oteri's Judge Judy and the prescription hound Collette (appearing here in a priceless bit with John Goodman as a flummoxed pharmacist). And of course, the abusive Burger Castle counter chick Nadeen, who shoots down every customer request with a "Simma down, now!" Extras include audition and dress rehearsal footage, and an audio commentary by Oteri. --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Ya best simmah!.......2007-06-28

This is one of my favorite SNL DVDs. I've always wondered why these DVDs weren't longer; they could easily fit twice the skits on one disc. Still, they chose Cheri's material well: Nadeen's "simmah" skit with Tobey Maguire, Collette's prescription chase with John Goodman, Cheri's horny wife to Chris Kattan's horny husband with Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the classic Mrs. Delvecchio skit with Christopher Walken...not to mention 2 awesome cheerleader sketches. All of these characters had other great skits as well (the horny husband and wife buying a car from Ben Affleck was priceless) but this is a solid 80 minutes of comedy for a great price. Pick one up - you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Mad TV rips her off.......2007-05-11

Has anyone else noticed how the female performers on MadTV consistently do characters which are essentially ripoffs of the ones Cheri did better when she was on SNL?

3 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMEDIANE - POOR CHOISE OF SKITS.......2007-01-17

I LOVE CHERI OTERI. SHE'S GOT A LOT OF TALENT AND IS A RIOT TO WATCH. WHAT DISSAPOINTS ME THOUGH IS THE INDIVIDUAL COLLECTION THAT SNL HAS RELEASED AS "THE BEST OF" WHEN ALL OF US KNOW THERE ARE BESTS THAT ARE
SURPRISINGLY MISSING FROM THESE DVD'S AND MEDIOCRE ONES ARE PRESENTED. COME ON GUYS, GET ON THE BALL!

5 out of 5 stars MORE CHERI OTERI.......2007-01-03

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A WHOLE VIDEO OF NOTHING MORE THAN:
1) OVER MEDICATED GEEZER
2) SIMMA DOWN NAH
3) CHEERLEADER

SHE'S THE BEST AND SNL HAS TANKED SINCE SHE LEFT.
COME BACK CHERI !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Simma Down Nah!.......2006-11-18

Taco! Burrito! What's that under your Speedo?

I love Cheri Oteri's characters! She was always someone I looked forward to seeing on SNL during her era on the show, and I was very sad when she left. I was so excited to see this at the video store last week, I picked it up without hesitation. Her Barbara Walters bits are great, and of course Arianna is great, too. My favorite is still Nadine, though. I can't help but laugh every time I see the Burger Castle skit. I hope they put the other Nadine skits on another dvd along with other classic Cheri performances. Everyone needs to go out and get this one today!

A Mighty Wind
There's A Mighty Wind a-blowin', along with the gales of laughter you'll get from Christopher Guest's third exercise in brilliant "mockumentary." After tackling small-town theatricals in Waiting for Guffman and obsessive dog-show contestants in Best in Show, Guest and his reliable stable of repertory players (including Fred Willard, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban) apply their improvisational genius to a latter-day reunion of fictional '60s-era folk singers, a comedic goldmine that Guest first explored 30 years earlier on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Collaborating with costar and cowriter Eugene Levy (who gives the film's funniest performance), Guest is so delicate in his satirical approach that the laughs aren't always obvious, and the subtlety can be as wistful (as in Catherine O'Hara's performance as Levy's auto-harpist partner) as it is hilarious. Some may wish for more blatant comedy, but that would compromise the genuine affection that Guest & Co. have for the music they're spoofing. --Jeff Shannon

Best in Show
Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman, turns his comic eye on another little world that takes itself a bit too seriously: the world of competitive dog shows. Best in Show follows a clutch of dog owners as they prepare and preen their dogs to win a national competition. They include the yuppie pair (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) who fear they've traumatized their Weimaraner by having sex in front of him; a suburban husband and wife (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) with a terrier and a long history of previous lovers on the wife's part; the Southern owner of a bloodhound (Guest himself) with aspirations as a ventriloquist; and many more. Following the same "mockumentary" format of Spinal Tap and Guffman, Best in Show takes in some of the dog show officials, the manager of a nearby hotel that allows dogs to stay there, and the commentators of the competition (a particularly knockout comic turn by Fred Willard as an oafish announcer). The movie manages to paint an affectionate portrait of its quirky characters without ever losing sight of the ridiculousness of their obsessive world. Almost all of the scenes were created through improvisation. While lacking the overall focus of a written script, Best in Show captures hilarious and absurd aspects of human behavior that could never be written down. The movie's success is a testament to both the talent of the actors and Guest's discerning eye. --Bret Fetzer

Waiting for Guffman
One of the funniest films in many a moon was hiding at art house theaters in 1998. Former Saturday Night Live comedian and Spinal Tap member Christopher Guest creates the ultimate parody of small-town dramatics, Waiting for Guffman. Corky St. Claire (Guest), an overwhelming drama director hiding out in Blaine, Missouri, thinks he has found the vehicle to put him back on Broadway: the city's 150th anniversary play, Red, White, and Blaine. As rehearsals start, we learn of the town's history ("the stool capital of the world") including a brush with a UFO. The mockumentary follows the various townsfolk wishing for stardom: Parker Posey as a Dairy Queen clerk, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard as stage-struck travel agents, Matthew Keeslar as the town's bad boy, and Eugene Levy (who cowrote the film with Guest) as a dentist who dreams of glory on the stage. The film is a hoot from beginning to end, and be sure to watch the closing credits. Fans of Guest's deft dry humor should not miss his other parody of the entertainment world, The Big Picture (Kevin Bacon as a student filmmaker who goes to Hollywood). --Doug Thomas

Description

A MIGHTY WIND: Documentary-style Comedy. Christopher Guest follows up his acclaimed ensemble comedies Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman with a docu-comedy about three folk groups from the 60s who reunite for a memorial concert in New York City following the death of a legendary folk manager. BEST IN SHOW: The tension is palpable, the excitement is mounting and the heady scent of competition is in the air as hundreds of eager contestants from across America prepare to take part in what is undoubtedly one of the greatest events of their lives -- the Mayflower Dog Show. WAITING FOR GUFFMAN: A town of Blaine, Missouri is preparing for celebrations of its 150th anniversary. Corky St.Clair, an off-off-off-off-off-Broadway director is putting together an amateur theater show about the town's history, starring a local dentist, a couple of travel agents, a Dairy Queen waitress, and a car repairman. He invites a Broadway theater critic Mr. Guffman to see the opening night of the show

5 out of 5 stars You either love it or hate it----and I love it.......2007-01-03

I admit to an unexplained fondness for clever parody and satire. These three films by Christopher Guest fall right into my slot. Each highlights a different form of unwarranted self-importance, but rarely crosses the line of easy insults or demeaning caricature. The realism is ----well, very real (although it doesn't go to 11 as in an earlier semi-related film).

All the characters are clearly drawn from real life. Although employing many of the same actors in diverse roles, the films allow each individual improv performer to shine a unique light that fully illuminates the target subjects. My two 20-ish daugthers and I often quote from these films. The biting wit is timeless. Outstanding talent, craftsmanship, and creativity forms the heart of all these stories. Very, very funny stuff.

5 out of 5 stars i've talked about brittish comedy at its best but now here's american comedy at its best.......2006-08-18

great and hillarious!!! a mighty wind, best in show, waiting for guffman...i have watched theses movies countless times and it still shockes me how funny and side splitting these perfectly hillarious movies are!!!

a must get for everyone out there!!!

4 out of 5 stars great films, poor packaging.......2005-02-04

The DVDs are great. They have lots of great extras, including commentary on additional scenes, insightful commentary in general, cast bios, etc. I was disappointed in the packaging -- flimsy cardboard and are smaller than more traditional packages.

I received these as a gift, and I think that as a gift, they are great.

I have watched these films over and over again and enjoy them each time. The acting is incredible and it amazes me that it's improvised -- the actors make it look so easy, which means it must be difficult! In A Mighty Wind, all the actors sing and play their own instruments, with some learning just for this film. Great dedication to their artform.

5 out of 5 stars Three great movies, but what's so special about the price?.......2004-01-12

I'm tempted to dock one star mainly because you'd actually pay LESS buying them separately than in this "special" package. ($14.99 each for Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, $23.76 for Mighty Wind = $53.74). The three-fer costs over $55. What gives? Well, I suppose you save something on shipping.

Regardless, these three films are easily worth the money at either price.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movies, Terrible Presentation.......2004-01-09

Boo, Warner Brothers!!!

You've taken three amazing movies and packaged them terribly.

I was extremely excited to have received this "box set" for Christmas, until I unwrapped it. It's three seperate loose DVDs with no box to tie them all together. And to add insult to injury, all of the DVDs are encased in the old-school type packaging with the cheap cardboard cover and black "snap" latch.

Very disappointing. Warner Brothers SUCKS! They really need to work on how they showcase their work on DVD in the future. They could take a real hint from New Line which always releases their best films with pride and flair.

As far as the movies go, they are amazing and packed with extras. It's just sad that they would call this a collection and not treat it as such.

The envelope-pushing cartoons created by Robert Smigel for "Saturday TV Funhouse" on Saturday Night Live are tasteless, crass, borderline offensive, and almost universally hilarious. This disc collects two dozen of the best, and viewing them together makes for a deliciously warped vision of Smigel and a relentlessly silly prism through which to view American pop culture. Case in point: The action-adventure heroes Ace and Gary, "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" (voiced, with deadpan earnestness, by Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert), are actually pretty unambiguous, but the joke is played just straight enough--while fighting to save the earth, they always allocate time to accessorize--and to pat one another on the bum for a job well done. In "Bambi 2002," Disney is roasted for its policy of pulling choice children's titles from the marketplace and releasing instead direct-to-video sequels that may not be up to the level of the original. In the "sequel," Bambi's mom is OK ("it was just a head wound, son"), and Bambi and his forest posse are hip-hop kids fighting terrorists in their spare time. "Remember, kids," the TV announcer intones, "it's all the Bambi you'll get for 10 years." Other highlights include the cartoon beauty contest "Are You Hot?" (in which Strawberry Shortcake beats out Betty Boop for sex appeal), and the black-and-white industrial training film "Sexual Harassment and You," which advises employees on the three rules for trysting with a co-worker while avoiding a sexual harassment lawsuit: 1. Be Handsome. 2. Be Attractive. and 3. Don't be unattractive. Elsewhere, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are skewered by their own words, and Michael Jackson reappears as a Hanna-Barbera creation--and still manages to be creepy. Extras include commentaries by Smigel, Carell, Colbert, Al Franken, James Carville, and others, as well as extra cartoon snippets and original art and storyboards. --A.T. Hurley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Your Average SNL Special........2007-01-18

The comedy at Saturday Night Live comes and goes in spurts and currently (Jan. 2007) it is rare for an episode, let alone an entire season, to be all that funny. However, for over a decade there is one portion of the show that has remained consistently funny and that is when one of Robert Smigel's Saturday TV Funhouse cartoons air. The Saturday TV Funhouse cartoon first began showing up on SNL in the mid-1990s. The cartoons have always been a welcome break in the usual format of the show and when first seen brought a new dimension of comedy to the famed sketch-comedy series, the type of witty satire that first made SNL a staple of American culture.

THE BEST OF SATURDAY TV FUNHOUSE was a special that aired on SNL in spring of 2006. The special was a collection of some of the best Saturday TV Funhouse cartoons ever. From the Award-winning (I think it was even nominated for an Emmy) "Saddam and Osama" to the Ambiguously Gay Due and X-Presidents cartoon, THE BEST OF SATURDAY TV FUNHOUSE DVD is filled with hilarious, short snippets of satirical animation that both critique and comment on our society and culture. Some of the cartoons are nothing more than teasing nostalgia, such as the "Globetrotters Christmas" episode (found on the special features) or "The New Adventures of Mr. T." Others are clearly aimed at ridiculing powerful corporations in attempt to awaken public awareness, such as the many Disney parodies found on the disc--"Inside the Disney Vault" and "Titey" are the best of these--and the Schoolhouse Rock spoof, "Conspiracy Theory Rock" that shows the corruption of powerful media companies such as NBC. Other gems on the disc include "Smurfette" and "The Narrator That Ruined Christmas" and the delightful "Santa and the States" found on the special features.

There are many, many, many funny cartoons found on this disc. It's something that anyone whom is a fan of good SNL or satirical animation, e.g. THE SIMPSONS, SOUTH PARK, or ROBOT CHICKEN, will probably enjoy. I enjoyed almost all of the cartoons on the disc. However, I only purchased the disc because of one cartoon that is contained: "Fun With Real Audio Christmas". As Robert Smigel points out on the commentary, this is the most popular Saturday TV Funhouse cartoon of them all. The cartoon involves Jesus and the Peanuts, but its message is universal and isn't just limited to Christians are Charles Schultz fans. I remember watching the cartoon the first time it aired. Watching SNL was a rare occurrence for me then, but for whatever reason I saw the "Fun With Real Audio Christmas" and it stuck to me. Like the images from certain television specials, lines from popular movies, are snippets of overplayed songs, the cartoon has always remained with me. This DVD is worth owning for that one little cartoon alone and everything else is just bonus.

The DVD includes over an hour of extra cartoons, some of which are even better than the ones in the main feature. The entire main feature has a commentary mostly with Smigel and his chief animators. However, other guests, such as Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert, also comment at parts. Surprisingly, most of the extra cartoons also include commentary.

4 out of 5 stars Outrageous.......2007-01-13

'A fine collection of cartoon humor as Robert Smigel attempts to offend everyone possible. Some of this is almost cruelly funny. I had seen most of these over the years and now enjoy holding them on one collection. The SNL "Best of Commercial Parodies," is a comparable bookend collection. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Own for Any SNL Fan.......2006-12-28

Saturday TV Funhouse has consistently been the best part of SNL for the past few years now. Focused, topical, biting, smart, and hilarious, Robert Smigel and company knock it out of the park on a regular basis. So naturally, when I saw that Universal was releasing a DVD of the special that Smigel prepared for an off week in 2006, I jumped at the oppurtunity to add it to my collection.

Simply put, it's one of the smartest DVD purchases I've ever made. Not only for the program, highlights of which include 'Saddam and Osama' and 'The X-Presidents,' but for the additional HOUR of extra cartoons (including the controversial 'Conspiracy Theory Rock') and the "All-Star" commentary, which is one of the best I've ever heard: it's intelligent, insightful, and funny in its own right.

This is a must own for any fan of Robert Smigel, TV Funhouse, or SNL period.

5 out of 5 stars Where is the first Michael Jackson cartoon?.......2006-12-22

...the one where he's trying to catapult himself into the kiddie pool in the compound and ends up reaming himself (to his delight) on the flagpole? The one with Marlon Brando? What kind of rights issues kept that one off the DVD, but not the second one that's in this collection. Also, I hope the Speed Racer parody with George Clooney and the Paparazzi can clear rights sometime in the future. Otherwise, an essential companion to the season sets, which won't be getting around to the Funhouse-era anytime soon--perhaps ever.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly hilarious and a great value.......2006-12-06

While Saturday Night Live certainly seems to have its periods of peaks and lows, a segment that is always a highlight when it is included on the program is the Saturday TV Funhouse cartoon shorts written by Robert Smigel. Short and subversive, every cartoon is guaranteed at least one laugh (and often many more).

This disc features a "Best Of" special that aired on television last season that runs for about an hour and a half, as well as about another hour of "bonus" cartoons. Highlights include the Ambiguously Gay Duo, X-Presidents, and Fun with Real Audio shorts as a whole, as well as the "Saddam and Osama" and "Inside the Disney Vault" segments. Also of note is the commentary by Smigel who is accompanied by guests pertaining to which short is being aired, ranging from Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert (the Ambiguously Gay Duo) to Al Franken and Mr. T. This runs throughout the entire feature segment and--to my surprise and delight--many of the "bonus" cartoons are also accompanied by commentary.

Some shorts are funnier than others, and some of the "extra" cartoons were better than ones included in the featured program, but all in all you are paying $15 for over two and a half hours of hilarious content PLUS a good two hours of commentary. I wish a little more had been included regarding the production process of the cartoons themselves, but I'm a film buff and that kind of thing interests me.

Not a perfect set by any means, but apart from buying a full season of the better television comedies (South Park, Arrested Development, Seinfeld, The Simpsons) you're not likely to find more laughs or variety of jokes in a single purchase. For the price of the latest lame "rom-com" that's been dumped on the public this year, you can have a truly worthwhile collection of comedy.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The really really big sheww.......2006-06-12

Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands and told us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'
Ed would begin that way introducing the celebrities and warming us for Toppo Gigio the Little Italian Mouse or for , a young man from Memphis , Tennessee ( Ed could hardly hide the distaste as he pronounced the words ) Elvis Presley. "
The video contains records of some of the highlight performances, and also an interview with Ed and his wife Sylvia.
Highlights are wonderful, but my sense is that putting together a package in which the complete shows as they came on at the time would give a dimension no excerpts can.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but there is better out there.......2005-02-18

I am a big fan of stand up comedy. I like seeing the comics grow into other roles (Eddie Murphy, DL Hughley, Cedric, Bernie Mac and others) I love the timing, quick wit, and delivery style of comics and there is nothing (well only one other thing) that can ease your mind of your troubles better than laughter.

This DVD is very good but there is better out there. Monique is a the top of her game right now she is raw (not as raw as in the Queens of Comedy) but she is on it. It would have been nice to have more of her in this, but she is very funny. The other comics are good but if you want funny all the way through the DVD of Latham Entertainment Presents with Bruce Bruce, Sommore,Earthquake, J.Anthony Brown and Ricky Smiley is much funnier. From funniest to least funny is Esau (he keeps a straight face while telling funny stories) Chris Spencer (suprisingly funny) DeRay (appeared in Barbershop, lots of cussing and ruff humor) and Doug (he was cool but maybe it was his material for me) Buy it used if you really want it otherwise look at other stuff......NOTE: Rodney Perry IS NOT doing a routine in this he is only the co-host.

3 out of 5 stars 90s Schtick - some good moments.......2004-10-16

These are clipped from A&E's Live at the Improv - total of 6 individual volumes, each with different talent, available also as a boxed set. Each concentrates on a 5-7 min. set comprising basically the most famous premises from each comic. Not necessarily a great or comprehensive collection, but nice as an intro. to each comic's particular style. Paula kvetches and headlines/MC, Martin Lawrence's ears before he had them pinned, personally pretty happy to see Dennis Leary included.

Description

In four decades, Zagreb Film of Yugoslavia produced 600 animated films, winning more than 400 international awards. The studio quickly became famous for a unique animation style that became known as "the Zagreb school." One of the pioneering distinctions was that its filmmakers wrote, designed, and directed their own films, resulting in boldly entertaining cartoons unified in design, tone and message. This volume includes Be Careful What You Wish For, fourteen stories of irony, double cross, and mystery. Some are hilarious, some poignant, all memorable. The Classic Collection includes seven animated films representative of Zagreb's most unique offerings.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quality Stuff.......2006-08-20

This selection of Yugoslavian animation is enjoyable viewing. I noticed a review for one of the other collections gripes about this work not coming close enough to shows like "The Simpsons". This disc is not recommended for an audience expecting American TV animation. It is, however, potentially very interesting viewing for students of international animation and fillm.

1 out of 5 stars MISREPRESENTATION.......2007-03-27

THIS DVD HAD A VERY SHORT SEINFELD JOKE AND THE REST WERE VERY
MEDIOCRE COMEDIANS. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PURCHASE.

1 out of 5 stars My true rating is half-star at best.......2007-02-08

Buyer beware, especially Seinfeld fans. Heed the other reviews. Seinfeld has a 2-minute clip. To be honest, I haven't even really watched most of the other chapters. As soon as I realized that Seinfeld was a mere two minutes of this rip-off, I signed right on and wrote this. Thanks a whole bunch, Improv and Koch Vision.

1 out of 5 stars Teaser DVD.......2006-09-26

As expected from a "compilation" from a company trying to make money from big names. The whole thing clocks in about 44 min! (Approx. 60 min in the cover; I guess that includes the credits!!) The acts were good but its all like a teaser trailer. Seinfeld gets about a minutes worth. I liked Ray Romano's piece.
Just too short! Rent it!

Each concentrates on a 5-7 min. set comprising basically the most famous premises from each comic. Not necessarily a great or comprehensive collection, but nice as an intro. to each comic's particular style. Liked the early Norm and Ray work, and the vintage Tim Allen.

In addressing the prior reviewers - don't buy this expecting a full set from each comic - it wouldn't fit on a 60 min. video. But if you want a 'flavor' of what each comic can do, or does, this is perfectly plausible. I agree Seinfeld's features are way better, but this is more like comic scene studies than full feature presentation. Know what you're buying first.

1 out of 5 stars Donýt waste your time and money.......2003-11-25

The description (and probably original intent) of this collection of stand-up material is promising: footage of comedians at a well-known club. Unfortunately, all was lost in the editing.

Only small snippets are shown from each comedian. First of all, this destroys much of the effort of these comedians to craft a good act. Jokes out of context are often not funny. A good comedian will organize his/her material for the best effect. By grabbing small sections of various acts, the benefits of this effort is completely lost. In the case of this collection, it seems that the editor picked out snippets that were not particularly good IN context. The end result is you see each comedian for 1-2 minutes and they are not even funny for that short period.

I daresay that most people seeing this collection on television would change channels rather quickly. This collection is not worth the time it takes to watch let alone the cost of the DVD.

Curly Howard on the cover...I've just told you the funniest moment of this DVD. These are the color shorts that most Stooge fans wish would just go away. They are not funny, but rather sad. Kinda like Willie Mays playing the outfield in skates in 1973.
