The spirit of Beavis and Butthead lives on in "Pure Energy! Pure Rock!", the first collection of Behind the Music that Sucks, Heavy.com's always irreverent, occasionally humorous spoofs of VH-1's Behind the Music series. Whether that's a good thing or not will most likely depend on your age (16 or below would be ideal) and level of tolerance for jejune, puerile, and above all obvious shots at easy targets. The main problem is that Behind the Music is itself so inherently, absurdly amusing--and yet its tales of success, ruination, and redemption are also true, which has the dual result of making them oddly compelling and rendering broad parodies like Behind the Music that Sucks pretty much superfluous.
That said, it should also be noted that some of the 10 segments here (there are also a couple of bonus features, including the "American Suck Countdown") can be fairly funny, and definitely off the wall, as Behind the Music that Sucks takes pot shots at the narcissism of Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, Kiss's Jewish upbringing, Kid Rock's strident white-trash stupidity, Fred Durst's (of Limp Bizkit) obsession with Celine Dion, and plenty more. In the end, though, the formula of "Drugs, Failure, Kinky Sex and Caffiene" [sic], with its limited animation and endless supply of butt "jokes" and references to animal sex, sexually transmitted diseases, masturbation, and so on, will prove wearisome to all but the hopelessly brain dead. The one saving grace is that at around three minutes each, at least the segments are mercifully brief. --Sam Graham

Raunchy but Right on.......2001-07-27
I'm not particularly fond of profanity, but in this case I can overlook it for the most part. The "victims" here are some of the WORST mega-popular acts in recent memory; from the obnoxious [...] rappers Kid Rock & Limp Bizkit (or however you spell that stupid name) to the pretentious, screeching noise made by Bald Billy & his Smashing Pumpkins (now mercifully disbanded) and Garbage (an appropriate moniker, indeed), they all get the stuffing beat out of them for their collective worthlessness. Great tape to play at a party; just hope no one actually likes any of these. Even if they do, they just might change their mind after seeing this video. After all, how much of that screeching caterwauling from Billy Pumpkin can anyone take?
Waste of money.......2001-06-09
I've seen behind the music that sucks on heavy.com for a while now as well as on Much Music TV. Do we really need to buy the DVD? Well if it's only [money] used, fine, but even at that low price, it seems a bit of a waste. Stupid humor is actually tough to create, there is a fine line between the subtle genius of say "Dumb and Dumber" and a total idiot making lots of poop jokes because he sees that they're in better made material. And this is my point. This video has hopped itself on the sophmoric bandwagon but hasn't added anything to the party other than bad animation. The last episode 'Behind the Local Band' (a made up one) is the funniest thing on the DVD -- which goes to show you that they're trying too hard to be funny by making fun of Britney Spears, but when left to their own devices, they actually do have good imaginations. Two stars just for the fake band segment. No stars for bad voice acting and poor menu's.
BTMTS rulez.......2001-05-31
I say that this DVD rulez with a capital Z...I use a Z because it is crazy much like the jokes in the DVD series. I loved it and I want the world to know so they can be part of this.
