They both fall for the same vivacious island princess while contending with all sorts of jungle dangers, including cannibalistic natives!

Not Captivating.......2007-04-08

I was predisposed to like this film, but was disappointed in the weakness of the plot and the hackneyed one-line put downs constantly exchanged between the two protangonists. It starts with the two vaudeville stars doing their routine on stage, while in the wings a girl is waiting with her dad for a "shotgun" style wedding for either of the two. They escape, leaving Australia looking for any kind of available employment. It turns out deep sea diving is the sole remaining option.

Princess Lala, who is half Scottish becomes the romantic target of both suitors. The indingenous people arrange a marriage ceremony whereby both men are going to marry her, although neither realize they are sharing a bride. This plan is destroyed by another authority on the island who wants to make her his latest bride to add to his collection. It's at this point that the plot breaks down and it seems they wanted to just end the script in the alloted time.

Cameo appearances by well-known movie stars of the era are interspersed. If you don't watch carefully you'll miss them however. The most creative part is the conclusion.

Road to Bali.......2007-03-16

Got it very fast and it is a great movie. Of course with old Blue eyes and Bob Hope. It had to be.

Forgettable.......2007-02-12

The plot was OK, but the songs were forgettable--almost painful--and the dancing was amateurish. I found myself fast forwarding through a lot. However, the comedic exchanges between Bing and Bob were fun.

Slapstick with a Setting Reminiscent of Gilligan's Island.......2007-01-17

Two comedians entertain us. While traveling, one sleeps below the train (risky!). When playing on bagpipes and in Scottish suits, they kick each other. There are other humorous scenes throughout this flick.

They land on a tropical island somewhere in the southern Pacific Ocean. Each one assumes that he will be the one to marry Princess Lalah. And, similar to the characters in Gilligan's Island, they have to deal with such things as wild beasts (in this case, the affections of a gorilla), natives and their poison darts, an angry volcano, and the imminent prospect of being beheaded. So who actually gets to marry Princess Lalah? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.

Road to Bali 1952.......2006-04-19

Bob Hope (1903-2003) and Bing Crosby (1903-1977) and Dorothy Lamour (1914-1996) team up their Sixht "Road" picture . Road to Bali , which was the only film in the series to be shot in color . Hope and Crosby stars as two out-of-work vauville performers who are on the lam . The two are hired by a South seas prince as deep-sea divers in order to recover a buried treasure .They meet beautiful Princess Lala (Lamour) and vie for hear affections . Of course,the boy run into the usual perils such as cannibals , a big squid and nomerous cameos from some of Hollywoods biggest stars . Director Hal Walker (1896-1972) was no stranger to the three actors , having directed the trio in ( Road to Etopia 1946) . The final "Road" picture (Road to Hong Kong 1962), would be released 10 years later with Lamour only making a brief Cameo appereance . This Movie are a gem and the only edition transfer in high Quality , there is several released version , this is the best ,Highly recommended

The Inspector General - Kaye plays a drifter who wanders into a town with a thoroughly corrupt city government and is mistaken for the "Inspector General" sent by Napoleon to clean up corrupt politicians. Danny Kaye is very funny in a goofy slapstick kind of way, and the mistaken identity is milked for every laugh it's worth. This is a good one and both the audio and video are in good shape. This film is black and white despite the color poster shown on the box.

The Medicine Man - Jack Benny plays a dishonest "doctor" of a medicine show who falls in love with a storekeeper's daughter just as her abusive father decides to marry her off to a wealthy older man. This is a pretty good movie, though I found the romance a little shallow and unbelievable. The thing is... it is *not* a comedy. It stars Jack Benny and I guess that's why it's on this disk, but he isn't trying for laughs in this film. The audio and video are both good quality.

WARNING! 2nd movie is actually "Reaching For the Moon".......2005-09-14

Due to error by Family Value the second movie here is actually "Reaching For the Moon" (1930) with Douglas Fairbanks of Robin hood fame. One of only 5 talkies he did at the pinacle of his career. Its actually the better of the 2 movies and the actual transfer runs 6 minutes longer than the typical 65 minutes! There are no beginning titles though! The plot is outstanding: Wall Street wizard, Larry Day (Fairbanks), is a financial genius but an incompetent with women. Entranced with a beautiful young woman, he takes lessons from his valet on the subject of womanizing, then follows her on an ocean voyage, where cocktails, laced with a "love potion," work their magic. He then loses his fortune in the market crash, and feels he has also lost his girl. The young lady, however, is not blind to the fine young man inside the awkward exterior.

Three stars for the quality, five stars for the movie.......2005-11-30

During the latter part of his career, Bob Hope's reputation as a comic legend was tarnished by a series of truly wretched motion pictures and television specials. But from the late-'30s through the mid-'50s, Hope was one of the most reliable laugh-getters in the business, and his best films from this period (THE GHOST BREAKERS, THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE, ROAD TO UTOPIA, MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE, SON OF PALEFACE, etc.) stand as a testament to his comedic genius.

MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE is one of Hope's funniest comedies, and would normally serve as a perfect introduction to his film work. The operative word here is "would"...if only a nice copy were available on DVD. However, this is one of those ubiquitous "public domain" titles that suffers from poor representation due to the substandard prints utilized by distributors. Good quality copies of ROAD TO BALI, another public domain Hope title, are available (Brentwood has an excellent one), while all the versions I've seen of MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE (from Brentwood, Madacy, Alpha, Front Row, etc.) are taken from worn, grainy-looking 16mm prints.

This Genius Entertainment release, which I found at a Dollar Store, is the best DVD edition I've seen, faint praise that it is. At least the folks at Genius had access to a clean print with reasonably good (though far from perfect) picture and sound quality. Their version even has the original Paramount Pictures logo (other DVD copies are taken from the later "California National" reissue). As for the film itself, Hope is at his hilarious peak as Ronnie Jackson, a baby photographer who turns private eye when he meets the title femme fatale (Dorothy Lamour). It's a wonderful satire of '40s film noir mysteries, with a first-rate supporting cast that includes Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney, John Hoyt, and Reginald Denny...plus cameo appearances by two of Paramount's biggest stars of the era.

Also on this Double Feature disc is ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD, a compilation of scenes from the short musical comedies Bing Crosby made for producer Mack Sennett during the early 1930s. This "tribute" was foisted on the public in the late '40s, after Crosby had long established himself as a reigning box-office champion. It's a curio at best, although fans will be fascinated by this glimpse of Der Bingle at the start of his movie career. Since the real attraction here is MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE, ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD can be looked upon as an extended supplement.
