I had never seen a Lum and Abner film before this one and found it to be quite a nice surprise. The humor may be low-brow but much the same as the Ma and Pa Kettle series, it is often hilarious. In this one the seasoned duo from Pine Ridge become the toast of Wahington!

It all begins when Abner (Norris Goff) invents a formula for synthetic rubber during the war years and follows the urging of a radio personality to bring the invention to Washington. Before they leave there is a humorous explosion from another experiment of Abners and an explanation of the "point system" by Lum (Chester Lauck) regarding the running of their general store that will bring some laughs.

Washington is all booked up but Lum and Abner find a bed to sleep in that is very comfy. The problem involves its location, and that's all I can say. It brings about one of the funniest moments in this likable and entertaining entry in the series.

The boys find themselves on a park bench dispensing their homespun wisdom about earthworms and other matters and soon every powerful mover in Washington is seeking their advice. Abner loses his memory after a bump on the head, however, and it's back to Pine Ridge for the boys.

All turns out well, of course, in this fun little film with many amusing moments and some genuine laughs. Fans of Ma and Pa Kettle will also love Lum and Abner in this fun little "B" series entry. A real gem.

I grew up listening to the Lum and Abner Show on radio, and am therefore intimately familiar with the characters. So This Is Washington is a brilliantly made film that accurately represents the grassroots comedy/wisdom angle that Lum Edwards (Chester Lauck) and Abner Peabody (Norris Goff) portrayed so effectively in the radio shows. One may be tempted to believe that this is little more than corn-fed comedy, but it soon becomes evident that there are deep insights hidden in the Sitcom setting. The theme of a fantastic invention that can help the war effort is obviously only a vehicle to showcase the talents of this immortal pair over the unique backdrop of the nation's capital.

As the film progresses, we witness a definite emotional impact on the lives that Lum and Abner touch. The message could well be that we, the driven citizens, tend to make life so complicated that we overlook the most logical solutions to our problems. You will be inspired and entertained by director Ray McCarey's timelessly engaging vintage movie from A2ZCDS.

The guy who made this movie also made little rasclals episodes and several Laurel and Hardy movies and it shows. This is an hour of old slapstic humor. Either you get it or you don't. I like this type of thing so I was laughing all night while watching two country idiots trying to make sense of the big city. A barell of laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Babes In The Woods.......2006-05-23

This is a classic story of country bumpkins who have a good idea but need to go the "Big City" in order to get it inot the hands of the right people. Of course, because they don't understand that city at all they make a lot of obvious mistakes that serve as comic fodder and to move the plot along. Like all Hollywood movies of this time there is a happy ending and they are able to get rich while also helping the war effort. There is a lot of silliness, but who needs a serious film all the time?
