Directed by and starring Jackie Chan, and set in 1930s Hong Kong, Miracles is a gangster film that is equal parts comedy and action film, with a touch of melodrama thrown in for good measure. Chan stars as a young man who rescues a dying crime boss in 1930s Hong Kong. When the boss passes away, he is tapped to become the new leader. He attributes his good luck to an old rose seller and the roses he buys off of her. To pay her back for all of his good fortune, he helps her pretend to be a wealthy socialite, just as she had described herself in letters to her daughter in order to help impress her daughter's wealthy fiancé and not queer their upcoming marriage. The plot is lifted from Frank Capra's Lady for a Day (1933), which Capra remade in 1961 as Pocketful of Miracles. Of course, like all Jackie Chan films, this movie contains more--and more innovative--fight scenes than Capra could ever dream of. Two set pieces in particular are stunning: A big fight in a restaurant and the final battle in the warehouse of a rope factory. Along the way, Chan throws in a musical number inspired by Busby Berkeley and a whole lotta heart, making this a well-rounded and entertaining film, which Chan himself has allegedly referred to as his favorite. --Andy Spletzer

You don't need to know anything about hockey to be moved by this hourlong documentary about one of the greatest upsets in sports history: the United States' defeat of the vaunted Russian Olympic hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The film recounts the David vs. Goliath matchup between the Americans (essentially a group of college kids molded into a team by coach Herb Brooks, also the U.S. hockey coach in the 2002 Olympic games) and the Russians, professionals who had won four straight Olympic golds. The story is retold in interviews with the people who lived it, including Brooks and several of the American players, sportscaster Al Michaels (who uttered the title line as the game ended), and key Russian players. Do You Believe in Miracles? is a solid blend of sports and history that focuses on the human element in one of the great underdog victories of all time. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle.......2007-05-14

this is a great documentary of the 180 US team. the insight was invaluable. It was wonderful to relive this great moment in American sports.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the memories!.......2007-05-04

A beautifully done documentary in honor of what had to be one of the greatest sports moments in US history. The Al Michaels yelp "Do you believe in miracles?" still brings tears to my eyes so many years later. The documentary is fleshed out with insightful interviews, and it is just as nice to see that victory in 2007 as it was in 1980.

5 out of 5 stars A Slice of Americana.......2007-01-20

Every American should own a copy of "Do You Believe in Miracles?"

Patriotism is what this movie is all about!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Story of "Miracle of Ice".......2006-09-07

For those of you who saw the movie, Miracle, this is a great follow up with the real players and coaches. It covers every game the USA hockey played to win the gold medal. As Al Michals says in the film, "Everyone forgets that the US team had to win one more game after beating the Russians." With interviews with the players from both teams, you really get a sense of how much impact there was from a hockey game.

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary, but I need the whole game.......2006-08-01

This was probably the greatest sports upset ever (at least American). No need to rehash what others have said, except for I want this game, the gold medal final, and medal ceremony on DVD. Every anniversary I check to see if it came out. The 20th and 25th anniversaries have past, and I'm not sure it's ever going to come out. This game brings a tear to my eye, because it was so amazing. It shows the true passion of sports.

4 out of 5 stars Great Archival Resource on the history of music and culture.......2007-05-22

This was a great documentary on preserving the historic contribution Motown made to the evolution of American music in the late 1950s through the 1970s. First person accounts by Smokey Robinson and the original Miracles add great value to archival documentation. A must see for all who not only love good music but understand the significant contribution of the Motown sound.

5 out of 5 stars Brought back good memories.......2007-05-14

If you are a fan of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles this is a must have!!!To see Smokey with two of the surviving Miracles was heart warming. The music and the stories just took me back to the "good ole days",when Motown was king and Smokey was it's reigning prince.I'm glad I bought it and would encourage any Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' fan to do the same.

4 out of 5 stars smokey robinson-review 1963-1987.......2007-05-06

I really enjoyed seeing smokey and the other members recall their heyday. My family and I have followed smokey and the group throughout their stellar careers. I had hoped for more performances, maybe there will be other videos that showcase this tremenous group and other smokey solo performances.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracles at their best.......2007-04-05

This DVD is a must see for all music fans, not just Motown fans. The interviews with the three remaining original Miracles are absolutely fantastic and very informative. The footage is vintage and even though I have a lot of old clips of the group dating back to 1965, there still was a great deal included that I had never seen. Buy this DVD, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Ordinary.......2007-02-09

Good enough chick flick- very Daniel Steele and full of hope for people. The point is that there are a lot of foster kids out there that need good homes, however, this one was a little over the top with perfect Jaclyn being rich and oops finding the right bio daddy, falling in love and everyone is so happy without any baggage after living such lonely, unloved, damaged lives.

The movie was ok. The end was poor I was expeting more. Overall a good movie.

Just viewed tape and I am very upset with its remastering or copying.Tape is choppy and shuts out most of the music in the movie .I also made the mistake of buying it in wide-screen. This is one of my favorite movies and I will now have to reorder it and count my losses with the price of the tape I have.

This was great years ago as a child and still is even in todays standards. Highly recomend for the family, fast paced.

5 out of 5 stars Bette Davis' portrayal of Apple Annie is pure magic!.......2007-03-19

Frank Capra's remake of his 1940 "Lady For A Day," is a mix of a Christmas story, Cinderella, and a 1920's gangster tale, all rolled into one! Bette Davis is excellent as a gin guzzling bag lady named Apple Annie, who has a daughter (named Louise and played sweetly by lovely Ann-Margaret) living in Spain, of whom she has never seen (except for an 8 X 10 photograph that Annie lovingly keeps in her room) since sending her there to be schooled. It isn't clear or even explained how the girl got to Spain or why that particular country was selected for Louise's schooling. Annie sends money to Louise, and collects much of it from her streetwise peddler friends, all of who she has named as Louise's Godparents. When Annie receives a letter from Louise, telling her she is bringing her fiancé' to meet her mother, Annie is devasted! Enter Mob boss "Dave the Dude" (Glenn Ford), his nightclub lady friend Queenie Martin (Hope Lange) and mob clown Peter Falk. Annie's peddler friends, along with Queenie, talk Dave into making Annie a lady of society. Dave pulls some strings and even gets Annie a penthouse suite! "Pocketful of Miracles" is a delightful story filled with sentiment, laughs, and magic! Watch as the gang transforms Annie from a street corner hag into a lady of high society. As mob member Junior delares when first seeing Annie's transformation, "She's like a cockroach what turned into a butterfly." Exactly! Hope Lange is great as Queenie Martin and Glenn Ford's "Dave the Dude" is excellent as the Mob Boss who believes Annie's apples are his key to good luck. This one belongs in every dvd collector's library of classic films, especially fans of Bette Davis and Hope Lange. It's truly special. The dvd transfer is flawless and the audio is good and clear. Dvd includes the movie trailer. This one is especially fun to watch during the Christmas holidays and will put you in the Holiday spirit!

4 out of 5 stars Glenn Ford as a Soft-Hearted Gangster?.......2007-01-30

Ok, I'm not too sure Ford really nails his role, though he certainly tries his best.

But otherwise this is a heartwarming, enjoyable New York-during-the-holidays kind of film, with a stellar cast including Bette Davis in a signature role and a very funny Peter Falk as Ford's "primitive" sidekick.

This film has all of Capra's trademark moments, a wonderful Cinderella story enlivened by the setting and the great supporting characters. Though you could easily trim 20 or so minutes, this film is a treat that has gotten better with age.

5 out of 5 stars Great Acting and Very Fun.......2007-01-29

Wonderful story line that's hard to watch without laughing. Great acting as Glenn Ford and Betty Davis try to pull off a great scam for the benefit of Davis' movie daughter. A great movie for the whole family.

It has been called chi (Chinese), ki (Japanese), prana (Indian), mana (Hawaiian), pneuma (stoics), spritus (Roman), rlung (Tibetan), More recently we've heard the terms: subtle energy, the field, bioenergy, zero point field and the force. In this 90 minute lecture Dr. Miller explores this mysterious energy and the links between ancient wisdom and modern day science using his life long study of the esoteric and science as his basis. 5 out of 5 stars Small Miracles and big miracle in cinema........2006-12-14

I became totally absorbed in the movie the moment I began to watch it. For fear of revealing to much and ruining it for you, let me just say your heart will be warmed and you might even become a better person for watching this terrific piece of cinematic wonder. Highly Recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Small Miracles a Heartwarming Story Set in Beautiful Wales.......2006-11-10

This film was originally titled The Testimony of Taliesin Jones. It is named for the hero, a little Welsh boy whose mother leaves his farm family for a life in town. His experiences are touching, and seem to involve a gift of healing.

Delightful, beautiful, deserves to be better known than it is.

4 out of 5 stars A little-known but wonderful film about faith.......2006-08-31

This film has much to recommend it to both Christians and non-Christians as it tackles the issues of faith and what happens to that faith when things don't work out the way a person wants them to.

At first Taliesin isn't sure why he believes in God, but he knows that he does believe. Then he sees what he considers to be tangible evidence of God in the form of miracles, especially the healing of his own warts, only to have those miracles cease and his faith thrown into crisis. This movie exposes the view of 'God as a vending machine' that many people seem to have today. They believe that a person can put in his 75 cents worth of prayer and his miracle should be released to him. Thankfully, Taliesin's piano teacher, a faith 'healer', readily admits that his prayers don't always work, though that doesn't mean that God doesn't listen or doesn't care. The fact is that if God did heal someone or resurrect a person every time He was asked to, then no one would ever die.

True faith means living with the fact of troubles in life and the awareness of our eventual death, and yet still believing that God is good, cares for us, and has made provision for both our earthly and eternal lives through Jesus. Taliesin's true healing, and the bigger miracle, is when he comes to realize these things and is able to come to grips with the fact that his mother will not be returning to the family. I think the filmmakers may have missed out on an attempt to emphasize this point again with the final scene. In this scene the class bully asks Taliesin to pray for the healing of one of his fingers which was half-severed off. The viewer gets the idea that the bully also has emotional scars which need healing far worse than his finger does; however, I admit that to protract this scene and re-emphasize a point already made might well have been heavy-handed (or even ham-handed), so I can't fault them too much for this.

The bottom line, again, is that for both believers and non-believers, this movie demonstrates what faith is: it is "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).

3 out of 5 stars Correction for Product Detail - this movie doesn't have CC.......2006-06-25

I can't review the movie itself except correction. Amazon.com has this movie as closed-captioned under Product Details (Format field). Really, this movie doesn't have it. I have to return the DVD for refund.

3 out of 5 stars a religious movie, not a mainstream movie.......2006-05-06

Much as the religious reviewers below would like non-religious people to see and like this movie, the fact remains that this is a religious movie, a softcore religious movie, yes, but a religious movie nonetheless. Non-religious people will not be impressed or moved by this adolescent's struggles with whether God exists or whether faith-healing works. Religious people will be hoping he believes these things. Nonreligious people will be hoping he gets over it and grows up. You can't please both audiences.

We are also told that this movie is "character-driven". This term has become a standard excuse for making a movie boring. The fact is that a character-driven movie does not have to be boring. This is simply a myth (a lie) that inept moviemakers have concocted because they don't know how to make a movie interesting without resort to the genre techniques of action, etc. They need to learn more about screenwriting so that they can make a movie interesting without action, fireworks or whatever--not hide behind magic words like "character-driven."

Small Miracles is slow--very slow--but not dull. The slice of life is an interesting one--at least for Americans who are not familiar with current life in Wales or wherever. None of the characters is particularly appealing or particularly interesting, but they are realistic enough. Making them one or the other would have helped the movie enormously. Again, screenwriter ineptitude must be blamed.

The blurb writer says the movie contains "coming-of-age" material (read, girls) and bullying. There is in fact no romantic interest in the movie and hardly any interaction with schoolmates. He does get punched out, but no more. The blurb writer was right, though. The movie would have been better with these elements.

One technical problem: the sound. The volume jumps ten decibels in some scenes--enough to damage your speakers--whereas in the other scenes the characters murmur their lines so quietly that you have to turn up your volume to hear them. Add the problems contributed by the dialect, and you've got your work cut out for you just to understand what they are saying (and I'm usually quite adept at picking up dialects, especially those from the British Isles).

The visuals used to try to show the imaginings of the boy were klutzy--flying dragons maybe for a child of five. The memory moments were also clumsily handled.

Bottom line: Don't even think of seeing this movie unless you are religious. Even then, I don't guarantee that you will especially like it. It's a lightweight, drab movie with a mildly interesting setting and no characters to speak of.

Instead of a history of the spectacular Niagara Falls, this IMAX presentation, whose format is, oddly enough, pan-and-scan instead of widescreen, resorts to re-enactments of Niagara's mythology. Though the film incorporates some breathtaking cinematography that emphasizes the splendor and awesome scope of the falls, director Kieth Merrill, who has helmed several other films in the IMAX library (Wolves), focuses on the legends that prevail rather than the wonder of the place itself. We see cheesy reinterpretations of the people of Niagara, "the thunder beings who lived under the great falls," as they send a maiden, "the chosen one," over the edge in a canoe. Equally odd is a scene of Annie Taylor and her pet cat, who tackled the falls in a barrel at the turn of the century. Consequently, this is one of the lesser IMAX features. This truly extraordinary wonder deserves a better platform, yet even in this imperfect examination, its beauty and power can't be repressed and ultimately it's what we remember most after the film ends. --Paula Nechak

    5 out of 5 stars A Diehard Niagara Fan.......2007-02-21

After seeing this movie on the IMAX screen, I just had to own it. It's not the same, obviously, because of the size of my TV screen but it's still a good movie.

1 out of 5 stars Why did the kitten change color?.......2006-01-26

Repetitive amateur and boring recreations- someone in the crowd points and yells "Look over there- it's {fill in what went over the falls here}!" - mar this dvd. Recreations are fine when they are done well, but not in this movie. There some truly stunning shots of the falls, but they are too few and too brief. The real mystery of the falls is that Annie's cat, a small black kitten when it goes into the barrel, comes out of the barrel at the bottom of the falls as a larger and obviously older white cat- huh? Save your money!

1 out of 5 stars ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz....... so boring.......2005-10-03

This is a badly produced IMAX film. There is a tale with mediocre imaging and sound... what a waste of time and money!

4 out of 5 stars A Majestic Presentation ==True to the Title and A Nice Study.......2001-08-30

In the IMAX tradition, this is a beautiful presentation. I have seen Niagara-Miracles,Myths,& Magic at the IMAX theater in Niagara Falls and now own this spectacular film on DVD. Kieth Merrill admittedly stays true to his title and provides not only the spectacular and dramatic views of the falls and rapids below, but tells the story of the rich history of the region. It is an attempt to provide a snapshot of the region and its people in this well done film. Each tale unwinds a different, but significant part of the history that makes the Niagara so enchanting. The video transfer is average with quite a bit of film artifact, but this does not significantly detract from the overall picture. The audio is Dolby and well done, though somewhat less spectacular than other IMAX DVDs (MacGillivray features in particular). The 'Making of...' added feature is of fair video quality with much film artifact. The commentary is very brief by Merrill and does not add much to the overall featurette. My three most favorite sequences (all factually true) are the child over the falls, Miss Taylor over the falls, and the delivery of the steamboat down river(no models used in this one). Dramatic cinematography is used with carefully designed props and nice acting to make these events very realistic. I felt as if I have witnessed them for myself! This feature will be much better appreciated by those who have experienced some of Niagara for themselves, as no film will ever capture its scale and majesty. Newcomers will have a nice introduction to the beauty and hopefully will be able to experience the magic in person.

    2 out of 5 stars A Story So Simple.......2001-06-04

Your five your old child could have wrote it. This is what I don't like about Imax films. They try to tell a story but it is so elementry you wonder what is the purpose. If you can not tell a interesting story why try. Niagra is certainly a beautiful place; but the movie would have been better serve if they went the educational, historical, adventure or eye candy route. Instead we are treated to a story a seconed grader would appreciate at the expense of some beautiful photography.
