The title character is a mild-mannered film editor at a big motion picture company who is reassigned to their "Splatter and Gore" department to work on their highly successful "Loose Limbs" series. The horrific violence in those films drives him insane and he starts killing people in the style of the movie villains. You might think that Evil Ed is a moralistic tale warning us of the dangers of horror films, but the filmmakers are having way too much fun to bother with that. It's really more a satire of horror films, the movie business, SWAT teams, and what-have-you that combines gleeful mayhem, a witty visual style, and Scandinavian angst. All the actors in this Swedish-made film spoke their lines in English, but their voices were dubbed for this American release. Hard-core splatter fans may find it a little light on the gore, but hey, any movie that starts with a guy blowing off his own head with a hand grenade can't be all bad. Trivia factoid: The title is a play on Evil Dead, and the name of Ed's tyrannical producer, Sam Campbell, salutes that film's director, Sam Raimi, and star, Bruce Campbell. --Geof Miller
Description
He's Eerie, he's Edcitable and his temper is Edsplosive.... He's "Evil Ed." From the bowels of a movie studio editing room, the demons that inhabit the world's most gory movies scramble Ed's brain until he starts butchering more than scenery. His rampage of exploding heads and flying limbs make this gorefest truly splatterific.

During the 1980s, one cartoon series ruled the airwaves... The Transformers. This paragon of consumerism was created with a dual purpose--to entertain and to galvanize children to buy the toys. Somewhere along the line, the show became a cult favorite, so in 1986 they fashioned an epic tale of good versus evil specifically for the big screen. The result looked vaguely like an animated remake of Star Wars. Who are the Transformers? The good guys are the Autobots: Optimus Prime, SoundWave, Jazz, Ultra Magnus, and many more. Their mortal enemies are the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron and StarScream. The Autobots must save their home planet from an evil entity known as Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). At the same time, they must defend themselves from an all-out attack from the Decepticons. Along the way, lives are lost, battles are fought, and a new Autobot leader is born as another dies. The story and action never stop in a thrilling ride that often makes you forget that you're watching an '80s cartoon with inferior graphics. The violence will also come as a mild shock to those who haven't seen this film for a while--definitely a movie for the 8 and over audience. For those who grew up on this series, this is a movie that must be watched. Unlike cartoon serials before and after, The Transformers relied on solid stories and interesting characters, a manifesto the film itself upholds with gusto and grace while also being morally responsible. Don't underestimate this movie; there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars Compare this to the latest movie (2007) and this one RULES! .......2007-07-04

To be perfectly clear here, this review is CO-WRITTEN by a person who loved Transformers when they were at the height of their popularity. If you had a kid like that, your house was probably filled with various transformers, some of which linked together to make one HUGE transformer.

I never fully appreciated the appeal of these toys but their power, their magic was indisputable. Day and night, they were a favorite toy, providing hours of imaginative play. If you were crazy about Transformers (or had a kid who was) you should relate to this review.

Anyway, according to my co-writer, who still has a serious attack of nostalgia when it comes to Transformers, the newest movie "sucks" and this old version "rules". I'll concede to his opinion. I do know that the toys became popular after the tv show became a favorite of kids and, from that point on, names like Optimus Prime and Decepticon rolled off the tongues of my kids (all males) as they started collecting them like mad.

Anyway, if you found the newest movie a disappointment, give this one a try. It certainly held the attention of a group of adult males who were suffering from some serious nostalgia (and disappointment) after seeing the newest movie. This one relieved some of that pain.

So take that for what its worth - and see what YOU think.

5 out of 5 stars Still a great film........2007-07-01

This has to be one of the best animated movies from my childhood. Nothing brings back such a glorious 80's sensation like this movie does. Naturally, I am probably a little biased because I grew up watching the Transformers cartoon and playing with the toys. But if anyone else did that like I did then they know this movie is the thing to have.

I won't give away any plot but I will say that this movie definately has some high points. The battle between Prime and Megatron is great, the music totally fits with the film and in no way (at least in my opinion) dates it, and the creators actually had the guts to kill off a lot of established characters. Add some great voice acting in with those points and you have a great animated film.

This is a great purchase for any Transformers fan, or any Sci-fi person.

3 out of 5 stars The pinnacle of the Transformers.......2007-06-15

My 3 stars pertains more to this new release than the movie. The movie gets a 5 without a doubt, but for me this special edition wasn't very special. My best friend was the one to buy this and I'm glad he did because to me, its a waste. Since I already own the original and I'm satisfied with that. I wont beat on a dead horse cause most of the reviewers went in very deep detail with the wide screen format and how cut and cropped this new release is. I was hoping for some deleted or newly added scenes to the movie and all of the original commercials even concerning the toyline. This was the only cartoon in the 80's that mattered to me. So I was really disappointed with the extras. However for those who has never seen this movie or have no knowledge of the original Transformers I'll try to be brief with it.

First off, If your new or looking for that nostalgic feeling you had years ago. Then I recommend buying the seasons. The seasons contain all of the character development of the Transformers before the movie. If you watch this just to rekindle some old fond memeories, its possible you may hate this and you won't give a damn about any of the characters, because they didn't get the chance to grow on you. You didn't experiance most of the heroics of several Autobots and what made them legends. Most importantly you won't feel the sorrow of watching some of the characters killed off or already on the ground destroyed. You will definitly never truly understand or appreciate the power struggle between Megatron and Starscream. So I advice those to watch seasons 1 and 2 to get a much better experiance of the movie. I'm not saying you have to watch the episodes. But I noticed some of the undeserved 1 star reviews concerning the movie itself was because people didn't know the characters.

Now for the movie itself. The Autobots and Decepticons continue their billion + years of war. This conflict was pretty brutal and saw the end of several characters that made the first 2 seasons milestones. New characters were developed and a brand new threat arised that jeopardized the existance of both waring armies. The animation is the absolute best you will see from anything Transformers. The 80's soundtrack was cool for that time. I just don't enjoy it the way I used too.

Transformers was and still is my favorite cartoon of the 80's. In fact this is the only one that I own and was able to sit down, watch, and enjoy. As far as I'm concerned I'll never get rid of it. This cartoon is timeless. And it can very easily stand up to or knock off just about everything that is out now, came out, and ready to comeout. And thats not just in my opinion either. I feel if you already own the original then this is good for a rental just to see the extras. If you want 2 copies of this movie than good for you. However, should you ever decide to purchase the complete Transformers collection. Also add Beast Wars and Beast Machines to your collection. You cannot go wrong with these.

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-06-12

My boys love the Transformers Movie. I have no complaints. It arrived timely and in good condition.

The off-Broadway comedy-horror-musical hit that ran for years makes a successful transfer to film with a bevy of big-name cameos and two perfectly cast leads. Rick Moranis is the nebbish Seymour, who pines for flower-girl Audrey (Ellen Greene) while living in the basement of florist Mr. Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia). Things start turning around for Seymour, though, after he buys a little plant during a solar eclipse, christens it Audrey II, and discovers that it likes to drink blood. Soon enough, though, Seymour finds out that Audrey II, now grown to epic proportions, is in actuality a "mean green mother from outer space" that is hell-bent on world domination. Based on the 1960 Roger Corman cheapie that featured a young Jack Nicholson, Little Shop boasts a hilarious, amazing score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who would go on to revitalize Disney's animation arm with The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Greene, the lone holdover from the original cast, is a ravishing, goofy Audrey, whose awkward demeanor belies a voice that could knock Ethel Merman off her feet. She's ably matched by Moranis, whose lack of a singing voice is perfectly in sync with Seymour's nerdiness. And Levi Stubbs Jr. of the Four Tops provides the lowdown, nasty-minded voice of Audrey II; his rendition of the Oscar-nominated "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" is a showstopper. As for those celebrity cameos, Steve Martin's sadistic dentist is a masterful creation, as is Bill Murray's masochistic patient; John Candy, James Belushi, and Christopher Guest also pop up. And there was never a lovelier and funkier Greek chorus than the three Motown-fueled girls (Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell) who appear throughout the film. --Mark Englehart

i love this movie it is fun and funny it has comedy and action and murder a evil plant what more could you ask for

4 out of 5 stars Like the movie...not the singing.......2007-05-18

This is a pretty good movie, except for all the singing....I know it's that type of movie, but I don't care for it. But I love the plot!

5 out of 5 stars The second best musical of all times.......2007-05-15

I first saw this when I was about 12. I hated it at first because I wasn't mature enough to watch it with out having nightmares. Luckely after occasionaly watching it over a period of about two years I final was able to to watch the whole movie from beginiing to end without stopping except for bathroom breaks. If you saw the original black and white version of this made in the sixties and the off brodway play which ran four about four years in New York. I also thought I would inform you that the whole alternate first ending is not include on this dvd. The al;ternate nding was only avilable for about the first three days the dvd was avilable for sale on line and in stores when it first came out. Unfortunately Mr. Griffen had not given approval to have the alternate ending included on the dvd so only fragments of it remain on the second release of it. When young rick morransis discovers a mystery planet trouble some comes up. Can rick tame this blood thirst monster will he is forced to murder to feed it;s growing hunger. I also thought I'd inform you that two of the members of this cast are currently decased. John Candy died from a heart prtoblem I belive it was shorly after his role as Barf in spaceballs the famous spoof of the starwars triology that came out after this. In addition shortly before the dvd release vincent Garden also passed away. Can seymor control this monster of nature and what fate lies in store for the human race. Find out in thrilling action packed hillarious finally. This movie should be fine for kids 13 and up due to mild gory images mild rude humor mild violence in a couple of parts, intensity and occasional inapropriate language at the begining, middle and the end of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Funny with a great Soundtrack!.......2007-04-06

I'm not crazy about musicals, but if the music's right and the story's tight, then I can be sold. I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it and I still love it today. I also admire the original by Roger Corman. Who can resist a giant wise cracking plant that eats people and sings! Gotta love it.

5 out of 5 stars Humorously Devious.......2007-03-23

I have nothing but respect for the puppeteers who controlled dear Audrey II. That plant ran the show, no doubt about it.

As musicals go this is one of the greatest, only second to Rocky Horror.

Rick Moranis is brilliant, and Ellen Greene has such an amazingly deep voice for such a tiny woman.

The three women singing throughout the movie gave me chills with every note. The vocal in this film are surprising and beautiful.

The story itself is brilliantly funny and horrific, it will have you laughing and cowering at the same time.

A true classic and worth watching...again, and again and again.

Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-11-10

This movie is great - I wish a sequel had been made, as was originally planned. It would have been nice if the DVD had been anamorphic, but otherwise it is a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Great for me!.......2006-11-05

I always liked this movie, a simple idea with a great out come. A good story of good verses evil, with a cool strap on rocket. Now i get to enjoy this movie when ever i please.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific entertainment.......2006-08-23

(4.5/5 stars) This is a fantasy film set during World War II, with the Nazis chasing jet-propelled backpack technology that will enable their airmen to land in enemy territory. There is even a mock Nazi propaganda film to illustrate the awesome power of this new weapon. In fact, the film really blurs fantasy with reality, with appearances by W.C. Fields and Cab Calloway, among others. Timothy Dalton plays Neville Sinclair, an actor whose life bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Errol Flynn's. Fiction mixed with reality can be amusing because it offers an imaginative alternative to straight fiction and non-fiction. On the other hand, "The Da Vinci Code," "JFK" and the current Bush administration have all proven mixing fantasy and reality can produce downright ugly results. There is some very good action as The Rocketeer, played by the dashing and handsome Bill Campbell, eludes the Nazis and attempts to foil their plot. Jennifer Connelly is radiant as his love interest, Jenny Blake. This is the type of movie where gray areas do not exist; everything is either black or white, good or bad. Along with excellent sets, wardrobes, styles, etc., this aids the film in establishing its nostalgic, 1940s feel. This is a very fun movie for most of the family. Even though there is little objectionable material, some themes might be better suited for ages ten and up.

2 out of 5 stars Corny, clunky, a deserved turkey of the early 90s........2006-07-15

The Rocketeer is the cinematic version of all the faux-Deco buildings that have been erected in recent years around Los Angeles, particularly the Miracle Mile area. It's wafer-thin nostalgia masks a chintzy story that can't stand on its own two feet.

The plotting of The Rocketeer is sound enough for adolescent fare. Unfortunately, the characters are totally uninspired and the dialogue atrocious. Worse still is the execution of the material. Every actor is miscast and thoroughly lacking in charisma. Bill Campbell -- ever hear of him anymore? He overacts every single scene. Timothy Dalton? Hammy. Jennifer Connelly is the only one to come out unscathed.

The direction is beyond weak. When The Rocketeer appears at the nightclub it is so poorly staged, so cloyingly "goofy" that it extinguishes the promise of anything remotely thrilling from happening. Add to this foul mixture a horrendous James Horner score... you get the idea. Still, some nice set design and an effective animated film-within-a-film make for a couple high points.

4 out of 5 stars In many ways, what "Raiders" should have been..........2006-07-14

There's a great deal more attention to period detail in "The Rocketeer" -- the clothing, hair styles on men, even the language used, all are more reminiscent of 1930's serials than anything Spielberg did. Not an indictment of Spielberg's work, just a partial explanation for why I enjoyed "The Rocketeer" so much. It's a love letter to Hollywood and to early aviation, and if you actually know a little about these two subjects the movie makes a lot more sense.

One reviewer stated he found the concept of Nazi spies and soldiers in Hollywood hard to believe -- yet the German Abwehr did drop several spies by parachute into the West country of England. All were ill-prepared and captured almost immediately, but clearly the idea was out there. As for soldiers, note that the Hindenberg carried Nazi soldiers regularly, and in 1938 we weren't at war.

The same reviewer also found the giant assassin unbelievable, but this movie _is_ a fantasy, after all, and the character is clearly based not only on the appearance of the real 1930's and 40's actor Rondo Hatton, but on the kind of character he frequently portrayed.

The movie also gets props for using Howard Hughes as a central character, and not only a Zeppelin, but an autogyro as well, in the climactic scenes!

No, this isn't a quickie, direct-to-video sequel, cashing in on the success of the 1977 animated hit about adventurous mice, but a full-blown theatrical effort. This time around, Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) is trying to pop the question to Bianca (Eva Gabor) when they're summoned to Australia, where a young boy has been kidnapped by a pallid, gray-faced poacher (who looks like and is voiced by George C. Scott). Wilbur, a chatterbox of an albatross (John Candy, replacing the late Jim Jordan's character Orville), and Jake (Tristan Rogers), a kangaroo mouse--Bernard is jealous of the dashing rodent--assist the Rescuers in saving the day and imparting a mild environmental message. The film opens with an absolutely breathtaking aerial sequence--this was made near the beginning of Disney's animation renaissance--so impressive it would seem the story, literally, has nowhere else to go but down, but some smart gags, excellent animation, and rollicking adventures ensue. So why isn't it better known? It had the bad luck to open, in 1990, opposite another kids' film--Home Alone. --David Kronke

5 out of 5 stars If you dont like this, your no true Disney fan........2007-05-01

This was a superb entry in the Disney canon. The best sequel to a animated feature as well. Faithful and underrated. This is great people, Walt Disney would have been proud.

5 out of 5 stars sooooooooooooooo good.......2007-04-21

5 out of 5 stars Happy with my order .......2007-03-12

I received my DVD in a timely manner and was package so it would not get damage, i would differently order again from the sender

3 out of 5 stars I remember this better.......2007-01-15

Released a full 13 years after the original, The Rescuers Down Under was the first Disney sequel, but was also considered a failure at the box office, which stopped Disney releasing later sequels theatrically. Hence, the reason why Disney now have a long line of straight-to-DVD sequels, which no one ever buys, and all end up in the bargain bin.

This is definitely my favourite out of the two Rescuers movies, mainly cos I was going through a fascination with Australian accents at the time - and why I later moved on to watching Home & Away and Neighbours - but it was so colourful, and bright. And the Australian accents. I remembered this more before seeing it than I did the original, even though it must have been the same amount of time (years) since I'd seen them.

It's a shame there were never more in the series, but because of the death of Eva Gabor (Miss Biana) in 1995, they were never made, and the two movies never became Disney classics.

Listen out also for the late and sorely missed John Candy, voicing Wilbur, the brother of Orville from the first one. He's hilarious as Wilbur.

Other reviewers have mentioned various flaws in the film (Cody's lack of Australian accent for example), but for me, I have to remain loyal. You can keep your Emperor's New Groove, Brother Bear, and the awful sequels to Cinderella & Little Mermaid (which are now two a piece by the way!), I'll have this over the rest of them any day.

Our favorite American hero has returned in this rerelease of the now cult-classic G.I. Joe movie from 1987. Once again G.I. Joe must protect the world from total obliteration. Cobra, the deadliest of foes and leader of an underground race of snake people, is proving to be a great threat to humankind. After spending many generations underground, he plans to take over the world again (with the help of his evil foes Pythona and Serpentor) by releasing deadly spores into the atmosphere. These spores can transform all life into the weakest of creatures, which means humans could potentially devolve into amoebas. However, in order to accomplish this, Cobra must acquire the Broadcast Energy Transmitter. (The BET activates the spores.) Luckily G.I. Joe is there to stop Cobra and his evil army. There are terrific fight scenes in which nobody gets hurt (like in all great A-Team episodes) and the cartoon style is true to the G.I. Joe character. All your favorite G.I. Joe characters are here, including Falcon, Bazooka, Alpine, Duke, Snowjob, and Roadblock. Starring voices also help lend a hand: Don Johnson, Burgess Meredith, and Sergeant Slaughter. Forever and always G.I. Joe will be "fighting for freedom wherever there's trouble, over land and sea and air!" --Samantha Allen Storey

Description

A 40,000-year-old race of snake people resurface, and with help of Serpentor, Desto, Baroness and Dr. Mindbender, plan to eliminate all of mankind and rebuild Cobrala. Once rulers of Earth, the Snake people were driven underground by ice-age temperatures. While in exile, they developed a plant whose spores turn ordinary men into mindless, weak animals. The key to their plan is G.I. Joe's secret project--the Broadcast Energy Emitter. Only this device generates enough heat so that the spores can mature. Humankind's very existance depends on G.I. Joe, but are they strong enough, smart enough, cunning enough to fight a warrior race with 40,000 years of experience?

3 out of 5 stars Was never and still not a fan of G.I. Joe.......2007-06-15

Overall, I hate G.I.Joe. I dont own the seasons. I hate anything that contains a whole lot of shooting and nobody is ever shot. And if they were shot, it was never, ever, fatally. If there's ammo flying. Animated or otherwise, I want to see people shot dead! GI Joe never gave me that. And there was no blood. With that being said. I pretty much thought this movie was decent. Because it had a little blood. It continued with Cobra fighting for world domination. And with the Joes trying to stop them.

I dont know about others, but I liked the dark setting of this one. And that opening was to die for. This movie delivers more with the action. There is fisticuffs all over this movie. The story in my opinion is a mixed bag. They do a good job in my opinion with the origin of Cobra the organization and Cobra Commander himself. The plot leading up to the end was ok at best. This is what dragged the movie down alot for me. The new characters on both sides just weren't very likable. Tell you how popular they were. Except for Falcon, none of them made an appearance in the episodes after the movie. 'Nuff said.

Well GI JOE the Movie should appeal to most fans. I thought it was alright even though I'm not a fan of GI Joe. This is the only thing of GI Joe in my collection. If you love the series then pick this up. But to those who are new to this should probably rent it. If you didn't follow the seasons its possible you won't enjoy this the same way a fan would because you don't know the characters. Still if your looking for a movie full of fistfights, you might not be disappointed with this.

5 out of 5 stars A fun time for Joe Fans.......2006-11-06

This movie had its problems, but looking at it now I see a lot of fun. I remember as a kid I didn't like some of the things that happened in the movie. Now I see it as a good mix of G.I. Joe and science fiction two things I have always loved. I never thought of G.I. Joe as science fiction as a kid, but looking back I wonder how I missed all the the super science G.I. Joe had in it. The move's big flaw is that the characters from the show were not used that much in it. They focused on new characters who we didn't get enough time to really care about like we did the old favorites. Still, it is a movie all Joe fans should see. I have shown it to some who have never seen an episode of G.I. Joe and they loved it. It got them to look at the other episodes. Check it out... and... Yo Joe!

3 out of 5 stars Got to get tough Yo Joe!.......2005-09-06

In the 80s cartoon graduation went something like this... He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, and Ninja Turtles. Yes there were other shows you may have seen, even other shows you may have enjoyed more, but there is no denying that if you were a boy between 5 - 11 these were the shows you mainly remember watching.

G.I. Joe is the series for the patriotic gung-ho attitude of freedom over communism that the 80s really flaunted with stuff like Rocky 4 and the Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi "coke wars". G.I. Joe is also one of the corniest yet lovable animated shows of that time. The series was a constant hit or miss. You either had brilliant shows with plausible plots (like Cobra ruining the oil supply) or farfetched fantasy (The Egyptian gods episode).

So what was G.I. Joe the movie? Well you take the brilliance and mix it with the bizzare and you get Cobra-la. If you take it as is the movie is really action packed and fun, but unfortunately it's supposed to be an awesome American military force that fights terrorism. Instead it looks like "Alien vs Predator" meets "Starship Troopers".

The public service annoucements are the one saving grace. They are truly entertaining and more memorable than the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad America can't do nothing this creative anymore. Japan could teach this young generation something!.......2005-08-08

This movie change the way we look at cartoon's forever. Kids were blown away by the animation the way the drawing's were so mature looking and not cartoony. Back then U.S.A. could make good orginal cartoons, drawing them almost like it's an anime. The Joe's deal with an 40,000 year old race of snake which looks half snake half human. Shargent Slutter the wrestler had his cartoon character on this movie. The action is way cooler in this movie then the series.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired casting and brilliant writing.......2005-03-24

Brilliant to get Burgess Meredith, who played the tragically martyred journalist Ernie Pyle in the original movie of the STORY OF G.I. JOE, to take the role of Globulus in this sequel made some 40 years later! Okay, it's not strictly a sequel, but talk about going over from the forces of light over to the dark side! No one does it better than Burgess Meredith, as he proved playing the Penguin in the 1960s TV series of BATMAN, and now here in the middle of this stylish movie cartoon.

Some complain that the emotional tone of the movie is too different from the TV series we all grew up watching. On the other hand some of the exact same writers were employed on both, including Ron Friedman, who wrote "Revenge of the Cobra." I saw his movie (that he wrote) BROTHER BEAR and I'm looking forward to his next animated special, Disney's new one CHICKEN LITTLE.

Friedman also wrote the TRANSFORMERS MOVIE. Where the hell is his OSCAR? Better send in Tunnel Rat and Dial Tone to retrieve it, boys!

2002's popular video-game-derived hit Resident Evil didn't inspire confidence in a sequel, but Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It's a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film's no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999's The Mummy). They're armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant "Lickers," lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like Gladiator and The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

After narrowly escaping the horrors of the underground Hive facility, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is quickly thrust back into a war raging above ground between the living and the Undead. As the city is locked down under quarantine, Alice joins a small band of elite soldiers, led by Valentine and Carlos, enlisted to rescue the missing daughter of Dr. Ashford, the creator of the mutating T-virus. It's a heart-pounding race against time as the group faces off against hordes of blood- thirsty zombies, stealthy Lickers, mutant canines andthe most sinister foe yet. Written and produced by director of Resident Evil, Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien Vs. Predator) and directed by Alexander Witt.

5 out of 5 stars Resident Evil - Apocalypse Blu-ray.......2007-03-29

This movie is an awesome example of blu-ray technology. It looked and sounded amazing. And the movie itself is great on it's own. The only drawback is that, like most blu-rays, the special features are lacking.

5 out of 5 stars great action in HD.......2007-03-18

Action from start to finish and shot mostly in the dark. DVD looked great with upconverting player, but compared to HD, this looks even better. Richer colors and so much more detail compared to the dvd release.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie even better in HD.......2007-02-14

Sony pulled out all the stops to show off the power of Blu-Ray in this movie taking an already great movie with tons of great effects and bringing them to perfect stunning HD quality in both visual and audio.

Amid a cast of all-stars in 1953's The Robe, Victor Mature made the strongest impression as the Greek slave, Demetrius. It was only natural, then, that Mature should star in this 1954 sequel, in which the newly liberated Demetrius forges an alliance with his Christian brethren to hide the sacred robe of Christ, coveted for its "magic" by the vile emperor Caligula (Jay Robinson, also reprising his role in The Robe). Captured and manipulated into believing his beloved Lucia (Debra Paget) has been killed, Demetrius rejects his pacifist faith, plots vengeance while becoming a rising star in the bloody arena, and falls prey to the scheming senator's wife Messalina (Susan Hayward), who craves his... affection. It all leads to a crisis of faith that will determine Demetrius's fate as a noble Christian or downfallen hedonist.

Inheriting The Robe's CinemaScope production values, Demetrius and the Gladiators has everything you'd want in a Biblical epic, riding the wave that would crest two years later with Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments. It's campy, of course--Robinson is outrageously over-the-top; Mature is too contemporary (preceding the absurdity of Richard Gere's King David by 30 years); and Hayward seems closer to Rodeo Drive than ancient Rome. Still, there are abundant pleasures here, from the lavish arena battles (a bit cheesy, but still impressive) to a straightforward morality tale that doesn't compromise its themes of religious loyalty. You don't watch movies like this for historical accuracy, but for the combination of thrills, passion, and glory that were Hollywood trademarks of 1950s epics, long before the more secular ambition of Gladiator. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars don't buy it.......2007-05-13

This is a terrible movie - it would be bad enough if we hadn't read the book, The Robe, but because we did, the book portrays Demetrius as a thoroughy moral, loyal and admirable person, and the movie shows him as a pleasure-loving, vacant-eyed, immoral fighting machine. Where the movie makers came up with this spin is beyand me, but someone should have stopped them. Actually, after reading the book and 'knowing' Demetrius in that manner, I found the movie nauseating - like a crude and mean characture of a good friend.
Don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Bibically-Based Films.......2007-04-10

This is one of the very best Bibically-based films ever, and it was also one of the best of the early "sequels." Taking up the story precisely where The Robe left off, it is an even more exciting continuing tale of the Greek slave, Demetrius, and his quest to protect the robe worn by Jesus at His crucifixion. The gladitorial combat scene, where Demetrius avenges the assumed death of his sweetheart, and subsequently renounces his faith, is one of the most memorable ever, and actually rivals that of Russell Crowe in "Gladiator." A must for the Easter season, or for any time one needs a reaffirmation of faith or inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars A film that surmounted the acidic test of time!.......2007-04-10

Demetrius and the gladiators is 'possibly one of the finest and exciting about the biblical epic. The movie in question depicts the last days of Caligula around the untiring search of the Holy cloak; the capture of Demetrius and his forced incursion into the gladiator' s epic, his sudden loss of faith when he fervently is seduced by Mesalina and finally the death and rise of Claudius.

There are brilliant and realistic sequences of brave fights on the Imperial sand but the film abruptly ends; and one leaves the hall firmly believing if it was question related with the budget.

Fortunately the precious Susan Hayward gives a tour de force acting who makes us to forget on one hand the awful performance of Caligula (absolutely flat and pasteboard) the straight stone faced of Victor Mature whose inexpressiveness was pitifully its main enemy to achieve a major status in Hollywood.

But there are justified moments of emotion all the way through, for kids and adults.

4 out of 5 stars An exciting epic sequel, fashioned according to the manner of Hollywood in the '50s.......2007-03-12

Demetrius and the Gladiators is a very good movie, in the classic sense of that term.

Many people of his time adored Victor Mature, while critics sometimes claimed he was melodramatic, but Mature was impressively right for the majority of films in which he was cast. The studio system was smart that way.

In this case, Mature brings the drama to life almost single-handedly, and certainly carries off this cast-of-thousands sequel to THE ROBE beautifully. Mature was well suited to the 50s sword-and-sandal trend, and I'd say this film, along with DeMille's equally good SAMSON AND DELILAH, are among his best performances of the period.

This film is a respectable and interesting sequel to THE ROBE, and unequivocally worth seeing. What's more, I can't agree that Jay Robinson is "over the top" -- he's just as fascinating a villain as he was in THE ROBE, and we're lucky to have more of him in the role in this movie. Considering that Robinson became, by all accounts, mentally obsessed with his character of the Roman emperor in these two films for the rest of his life, I'd say this movie is even more fascinating in that regard. Robinson is one of those actors who proves the old saying that it only takes one stand-out performance to secure an actor's place in history forever. Robinson's performance is easily the best Roman emperor ever committed to celluloid up until now, I CLAUDIUS notwithstanding.

In short, don't sell this movie short, or you'll be the worse for it. The movie's tone is certainly different from THE ROBE, but it is a genuinely satisfying Hollywood entertainment of a fairly high order. The budget is generous, the cast is excellent, and the movie looks very good in all the most important aspects as a result. Feel free to bring popcorn, and I'd recommend a Kleenex as well.

4 out of 5 stars Robe Sequel drawn from "The Big Fisherman" Lloyd C. Douglas Novel.......2007-02-15

In an age when Hollywood was not fond of making sequels (1954), we have here a continuance of the story of the Robe of Christ and the Christians who were dedicated to it's preservation after Tribune Gallio (Richard Burton) is martyred at the end of 1953's "The Robe", an extremely popular Christian epic. The plot follows Demetrius (Victor Mature) as he experiences what Christians call "backsliding", due to a perception that his love is dead at the hands of some drunken gladiators. What follows is a tremendous example of revenge and eventual redemption of a man overwhelmed with grief and filled with hate. The Gladiator scenes are wonderfully done. The colors and production in Cinemascope stand out and some of the continuing performances such as Jay Robinson are worthy of an Academy Award nomination, as Robinson gives his heart to the role of the manic Caligula, believing himself to be a God and eventually being killed at the hands of his own guards. The revenge scene against the Gladiators is Great! Demetrius grabs a sword and kills them one by one in the arena as his opponents are forced to face him under the whip of Ernest Borgnine and the hot-smoking poker of Demetrius's friend. "These aren't the rules" says a gladiator full of fear at Demetrius's blood lust for their deaths. "We're changing the rules!!! replies Borgnine as he chases the rest of them out to die. WOW! One of the better Gladiator movies since Spartacus and although Crowe's Gladiator is excellent and funny in spots, this movie from the 50's is a classic rendering with bad guys you love to hate! Well recommended, but make sure you see "The Robe" first to know what is going on.

4 out of 5 stars Salem's Lot.......2007-05-17

This is one of the best movies made from one of Steven King's novels. It is so full of suspense!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best creepiest films out there.......2007-05-09

This is everything a horror film should be, great combo of Stephan King & Tobi Hooper, doesen't get any better than this. All the true aspects of horror and natural fear are here, very well done one of the best.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the book!.......2007-03-15

For me, I loved the book Salem's Lots. In fact it is one of my favorite books of all time. The movie on the other hand just didn't do it for me. It is close to the book as far as the storyline, but the acting and the cheep looking vampire ...not so good.
So I give this movie a 3 at best.

5 out of 5 stars Salems Lot still Holds up as a Top notch Vampire film!.......2007-01-26

ok King had definately outdone himself with this movie about a writer that returns to his hometown only to find something is wrong, Terribly wrong. and worse yet townspeople are fleeing and have already vanished.
come along on stephan kings thrill ride of the Supernatural and immerse your self in this world of Vampires an Absolute Must Own for Vampire Fans!
188 Minutes long too so not a cheap short film either.

4 out of 5 stars Vampires galore.......2007-01-10

Vampires, vampires, vampires, that pretty much includes the movie. A nicely written and performed flashback style movie. Those who are intriqued with David Soul will enjoy it all the more. A few intense moments are the best it offers, if you are looking for slasher type movie you will be disapointed. Over all a good film.

Description

Like most 12-year-olds, Niles and Holland like to get into mischief. The only problem is when Holland gets into mischief, people have a funny way of "accidentally" dying. Niles knows that Holland is responsible for all the gruesome accidents happening in the neighborhood - the pitchfork hidden in the hay, the severed finger in the box, the baby in the wine barrel. He knows but dare not tell anyone, not even his beloved grandmother Ada (Uta Hagen), that Holland is the evil twin¿or is he?

5 out of 5 stars Creepy psychological horror.......2007-06-27

The Other is a classic horror story that is pure psychological terror. It is slowly paced, but this is necessary for the character & plot development. The story is set in rural Connecticut in the 1940s, and revolves around the Perry clan...the central characters are the young Perry twins, 11-year old Hammond and Niles Perry who frolic in the sun and enjoy games as boys do, but there is more to it than that, of course. Amidst this idyllic setting, a series of family tragedies takes place...the Perry's father has died of an accident, the mother is rendered an invalid due to some sort of mental breakdown, and there are more tragedies to follow. The only adult that seems to have an inkling of what's going on is Uta Hagen's grandmother character, who teaches Niles 'the game' which reveals darker undertones as the story moves along...we see a golden-haired boy who seems harmless enough on the surface but as time progresses, something darker is revealed, leaving us reeling when the truth is revealed [though it doesn't take too long for the viewer to deduce what is actually unfolding here]. Is it a case of evil vs good twin, split personality or unnatural forces at work? Not to give too much away, let's just say that this movie is a first-rate psychological horror movie that has moments that will give you the creeps. The actor who plays Niles Perry does an excellent job of portraying a tormented soul, and Uta Hagen is wonderful as the all-seeing grandmother that is torn between her love for her grandson and the need to put a stop to the horrors unfolding around her. This is a must-see for fans of atmospheric horror with a psychological twist.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart!!.......2007-06-23

Not your typical kind of horror movie. This isn't a slasher or gore type of horror movie, but a psycholigical horror movie. The movie gives that 'warm and sunny' feeling like some stories start out as, but as the movie unravels everything begins to turn grey, dark and depressing. Everything isn't as it seems and as the plot thickens you are surprised with a twist.

I'm going to try not to spoil the plot for you, but I urge you not to watch this in the dark or alone. If you are into being scared or psychologically sickened then this is the movie for you. I only gave this movie three stars because the end still makes me sick to my stomach.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Horror Film.......2007-04-01

You can tell this film was made by Robert Mulligan. Dripping with atmosphere and timelessness, remember To Kill A Mockingbird. Many people of the younger set will not get the slow pacing and realism. The horror films of today rely very little on actual character development and storyline. They want their blood and they want it now. This film is scary because it never lets go of its innocent eeriness. These two boys? Is he a ghost,is he a psychopath with a split personality? What is this magical power? Is it just a game of imagination or can he become something other? I love this film because of the genuine creepiness.Far superior to The Sixth Sense or even in my mind Psycho. This is what true horror is about, the everyday psychological mystery. Stephen King has yet to write such a work, The Dead Zone comes the closest. This film had an impact similar to Black Christmas and Repulsion but more realistic in tone. In the end, I still am not sure what brother was evil to begin with.

3 out of 5 stars Melo, incredible melo.......2007-02-13

I don't remember this movie (1972) but the theme of Satanic boy (or girl !) is a little "démodé" in your days of innocence lost, but...a good story a little too slow (boring?)....

3 out of 5 stars Don't Read Back of DVD --It's a Spoiler!.......2007-01-12

I generally like this film for its errie atmospheric direction and plot twists, but the pacing is way off. It absolutely drags too much in the first half even though it is laying the foundation for what is to come later. I did find the ending to be predicatable, but, nevertheless, haunting. This is a very odd film and it won't appeal to everyone and that's why you will notice mostly 1 or 2 stars vs. 4 or 5 stars. It's a love it or hate kind of film.

I liked it has I like most slower moving chillers that build suspense and are character-driven like "The Sixth Sense", "The Others" (with Nicole Kidman), and "Burnt Offerings", but this movie moved slower than it needed to. I still gave it three stars as the acting is very convincing by all, especially Uta Hagen and Diana Muldaur whom I've always loved as an actress. She is one classy woman who never got the recognition she really deserved. Most might know her today from her time on "LA Law."

In any event, just remember that inspite of all the reviews here either way (thumbs up or down), this film is a bit odd and not to everyone's liking.

You didn't experiance most of the heroics of several A
