From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars One of the last great Disney Movies.......2007-05-28

Mermaid was one of Disney's last great movies.....before they started trying to spin each classic tale into a 2nd, 3rd movie....each meaningless money making machines.

The Little Mermaid is the Disney version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale. Disney brings it to life with the beautiful Ariel, and a whole cast of loveable characters- Flounder, Eric, Sebastian, Flounder, Skuttle.

Ariel, the youngest of many daughters is bored with life under water and want to explore life on land as a human. She see's a man aboard a boat and falls in love. His name is Eric. When a storm rages, Ariel saves Eric and leaves his ashore. He sees her and can't forget her face. Against her fathers wishes Ariel dreams of life on land. She bargains with the sea witch Ursula to turn her into a human. The price she pays is her voice. She has to make Eric fall in love with her- but she has no voice.
Ursula uses Ariels voice to bring her father to her knees. In the end, she is overcome, and Triton- Ariels father is saved, and let's Ariel go- to become a human.

The music is some of the most creative animated music EVER. From Kiss the girl to Under the Sea, each songs is singable, and unforgettable. Boy and girls alike will love this movie about dreams, courage, and adventure.

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

Description

From the acclaimed creators of TOY STORY, THE INCREDIBLES, and FINDING NEMO comes a high-octane adventure comedy that shows life is about the journey, not the finish line. Hotshot rookie race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is living life in the fast lane until he hits a detour on his way to the most important race of his life. Stranded in Radiator Springs, a forgotten town on the old Route 66, he meets Sally, Mater, Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and a variety of quirky characters who help him discover that there's more to life than trophies and fame. Revved up with a sensational soundtrack, featuring Rascal Flatts, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, James Taylor, and others, plus exciting bonus features, including the exclusive short movie "Mater And The Ghostlight," CARS is full of freewheeling fun for everyone.

disney / pixar makes great movies and this is one of them! great family movie with a great storyline. loved it

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic!.......2007-06-30

I would rate this along the lines of "Toy Story" as far as a child's ability to relate and enjoy the film, and for staying power.

My 3 year old son is addicted to this movie. The "speed" and "lightening" and even the classic music used in the film (Route 66 and the first song I heard right after getting my driver's license at 16 - Life is a Highway) make the perfect blend for a life-long HIT!

The actual story is original - tying racing with the story of Route 66. The characters are likable and entertaining for ALL ages!

Whether you are 3 or 103, I think you will enjoy the originality, comedy, music, action and even a little bit of romance! Two thumbs up and a must- have for all animation film collectors!

2 out of 5 stars In need of some repair .......2007-06-28

Pixar usually makes children's films that also appeal to adults on many levels, including jokes that fly well above the heads of youngsters. My son, who is three, loves to watch the first ten minutes of "Cars." Then he gets extremely bored and stops watching. Good films, such as "Finding Nemo," "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" and "Toy Story," will hold his attention for the duration. (He knows "Finding Nemo" from start to finish and has watched it, at minimum, fifty times.) I also enjoy good children's movies (I know most of the lines from "Finding Nemo"), yet I find this film tedious. At a runtime of nearly two hours, I cannot sit through the entire movie in one sitting and even then have a difficult time watching all of it. It starts out well enough and the ending, with its positive messages of friendship, loyalty and good sportsmanship, is quite good. Much of the material in between, however, is fairly weak. Scenes drag on far too long and are just plain dull. The messages could have been conveyed in fewer and more truncated scenes and still have been as effective. The basis for a very good film here is certainly evident. As usual, Pixar's animation is excellent and the tone is just right for kids: simple without being condescending and with very sparse scatological humor (which is an astonishing feat, given Larry the Cable Guy's involvement). The voice acting is well cast and features uniformly fine performances. With more judicious writing and editing, "Cars" could have been another Pixar classic. (2.5/5 stars)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best animated features ever!.......2007-06-24

Every medium has its own unique opportunities, with animation its the ability to express emotion that has universal appeal without all of the trappings that come with an actor of a specific gender, race, etc.

The cars in Cars are more human than human. This is a very touching movie and true quality family fare. Its a great movie to buy- we watch it over and over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe this didn't win the Oscar!.......2007-06-20

I watched this with two aging race drivers: one a local dirt track champion and the other a former NASCAR Winston Cup driver. We all loved this movie. Besides being a high quality animated presentation, my companions pointed out the accuracy and realism regarding the racing episodes and techniques that was evident to them. This movie will be a classic!

It takes a certain kind of comic genius to create a character who is, to quote the classic Sondheim lyric, appealing and appalling. But be forewarned: Borat is not "something for everyone." It arrives as advertised as one of the most outrageous, most offensive, and funniest films in years. Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen reprising the popular character from his Da Ali G Show), leaves his humble village to come to "U.S. and A" to film a documentary. After catching an episode of Baywatch in his New York hotel room, he impulsively scuttles his plans and, accompanied by his fat, hirsute producer (Hardy to his Laurel), proceeds to California to pursue the object of his obsession, Pamela Anderson. Borat is not about how he finds America; it's about how America finds him in a series of increasingly cringe-worthy scenes. Borat, with his '70s mustache, well-worn grey suit, and outrageously backwards attitudes (especially where Jews are concerned) interacts with a cross-section of the populace, catching them, a la Alan Funt on Candid Camera, in the act of being themselves. Early on, an unwitting humor coach advises Borat about various types of jokes. Borat asks if his brother's retardation is a ripe subject for comedy. The coach patiently replies, "That would not be funny in America." NOT! Borat is subversively, bracingly funny. When it comes to exploring uncharted territory of what is and is not appropriate or politically correct, Borat knows no boundaries, as when he brings a fancy dinner with the southern gentry to a halt after returning from the bathroom with a bag of his feces ("The cultural differences are vast," his hostess graciously/patronizingly offers), or turns cheers to boos at a rodeo when he calls for bloodlust against the Iraqis and mangles "The Star Spangled Banner."

Success, John F. Kennedy once said, has a thousand fathers. A paternity test on Borat might reveal traces of Bill Dana's Jose Jimenez, Andy Kaufman, Michael Moore, The Jamie Kennedy Xperiment, and Jackass. Some scenes seem to have been staged (a game Anderson, whom Borat confronts at a book signing, was reportedly in on the setup), but others, as the growing litany of lawsuits attests, were not. All too real is Borat's encounter with loutish Southern frat boys who reveal their sexism and racism, and the disturbing moment when he asks a gun store owner what gun he would recommend to "kill a Jew" (a Glock automatic is the matter-of-fact reply). Comedy is not pretty, and in Borat it can get downright ugly, as when Borat and his producer get jiggly with it during a nude fight that spills out from their hotel room into the hallway, elevator, lobby and finally, a mortgage brokers association banquet. High-five! --Donald Liebenson

On the DVD
"Global Visitings" captures Borat-mania in all its hype and glory, as Sacha Baron Cohen, never breaking character, promotes his film around the world. On the itinerary is Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the Toronto Film Festival, a now-legendary screening aborted after a projector malfunction. A mixed bag of deleted scenes finds Borat trying to bait more unsuspecting citizens, including an animal-control worker who refuses Borat a dog after he asks, "How do you recommend I cook this?" and a doctor who is nonplussed by Borat's obscene medical history. A supermarket visit offers the most maddening fromage-inspired looniness since Monty Python's "Cheese Shop" sketch. Also good for a few chuckles are a faux soundtrack commercial and a Baywatch parody ("Sexydangerwatch"). --Donald Liebenson

Description

Sacha Baron Cohen brings his Kazakh journalist character Borat Sagdiyev to the big screen for the first time. Leaving his native Kazakhstan, Borat travels to America to make a documentary. As he zigzags across the nation, Borat meets real people in real situations with hysterical consequences. His backwards behavior generates strong reactions around him exposing prejudices and hypocrisies in American culture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Veddy Nice.......2007-06-30

Borat is, simply put, one of the funniest films of all time. Sacha Cohen never steps out of character and what makes it funny is people believe he's real. Borat's apparent ignorance is a setup to reveal the actual ignorance of those he encounters. Though the producers got releases some are suing him for revealing how dumb they are.
Borat basically mocks all his characters attributes: antisemitism, sexism, lack of etiquette, etc. An interesting trivia note is when Borat is speaking Kazakh, he's really speaking Hebrew with some Polish thrown in. And his sidekick is speaking Armenian. The village is actually in Romania (and they're getting in on the lawsuits too). High five!

1 out of 5 stars Controversial???.......2007-06-26

Potty humor. If you're 13 and you need a reminder of what anti-semitism is then go rent it... otherwise don't even bother. This movie was a complete waste of my time. I give it one star because I couldn't give it anything lower.

5 out of 5 stars Controversially hilarious.......2007-06-20

I did not see this movie in theaters because it looked like garbage to me and I did not want to waste yet another ten dollars on a crappy film. One night when Borat was on video, I took a trip to the video store to rent Children of Men, but since they were out, I decided to rent Borat instead and give it a shot. What I discovered was possibly one of the funniest movies I have ever seen in my entire life. Sure, Borat was offensive, but sometimes you just need to put that aside and realize that the jokes are actually quite funny. I don't understand why people are saying that Borat is so terrible because it makes fun of so many different things, but in all actuality, it made fun of women to no end and I took no offense to that. It was all in good fun and everyone should remember that it was just a movie; if you don't like it, then don't watch it--no one is forcing you to like it. I personally enjoyed it quite a bit and it had me laughing out loud the entire time and I don't think another movie has ever had me laughing quite like that. At the very least, give the movie a shot. If you don't like it, then don't ever think about it again, but if you do, then props to you because the movie was genius and insanely funny.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-06-18

I didn't know what to expect from this movie but I laughed all the way through it and even felt sorry for Borat a few times! The people who find the movie offensive likely have no sense of humor. NO "group" is left unscathed in this movie. Let's see we cover "Premier" Bush, blacks, feminazis, jews, gays, radical right-wing Christians, politicians, rednecks, uptight New Yorkers, and Hollywood, just to name a few.

The movie shows us our own idiocy. For instance when Borat is at the rodeo and he's talking to the guy who runs the rodio and the guy says Borat can't kiss him (as is Borat's custom) because he'll be seen as one of those fairy guys. And Borat says yes in his country they hang them and the rodeo redneck says something like "yeah that's what we're trying to get done here"! And then there's the three drunk Univ South Carolina frat boys in the van. Three drunk redneck boys going off about how men are better than women and how we should have slavery in America.

The movie poked fun NOT at the jews, blacks or gays (among several groups) but at the people who were prejudiced against them! That is so obvious!

I think it was ingenious!

5 out of 5 stars First Class........2007-06-17

Well, first of all, I don't think there's any doubting that Sacha Baron Cohen is one of the most exceptional comedians of our day. His work here completely solidifies his reputation, and I look forward to him finding more work in Hollywood. Perhaps, like with Jim Carrey, they'll build entire films around his presence which would suit this fan just fine. It sounds like they're on the road to doing so as I read he's making a movie with Johnny Depp and I know he played a character in Talladega Nights. As for Borat, it is a magnificent film and I highly recommend it; although, it certainly isn't something that you can see over and over again. Its humor is all of the "embarrassment" variety so it goes down with the jolt and thrill of a shot of Maker's Mark. You do feel very bad for the average citizen who finds his or her self unintentionally lampooned. One aspect of it I loved in particular was the interaction between Borat and his producer. With the suit and short tie he was a 100 percent sterling imitation of a Soviet Union bureaucrat. Every time I saw that guy I laughed. I must disagree over the anti-Semitism charges as Borat's posing as an anti-Semite created the situation in which people could then speak more freely. Borat is also fun to laugh at and laughing at him also allows for the satirization of those who hold the same offensive views. We know that Jews don't run our nation or are a force of evil so it's quite natural, and healthy, to laugh at those fools who think otherwise. There's no Jew baiting here in my opinion. All there is a masterful cinematographic achievement. I can't wait for the Bruno flick to come out.

Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop.

On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon

    Product Description

In 1776 South Carolina, widower and legendary war hero Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) finds himself thrust into the midst of the American Revolutionary War as he helplessly watches his family torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats. Unable to remain silent, he recruits a band of reluctant volunteers, including his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), to take up arms against the British. Fighting to protect his family's freedom and his country's independence, Martin discovers the pain of betrayal, the redemption of revenge and the passion of love.

    5 out of 5 stars Grow a funny bone, why don't you?.......2007-06-12

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. All the actors/actresses play an integral part in this movie. I guess that some people can't think "outside the box". Not every movie has to make sense or have a solid plot to be good or funny. Sometimes stupid humor works, and this is one of those occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Funny as Hell !!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-29

I watched this movie on HBO so I had to add it to my collection. The unrated movie is even better. I give it two Thumbs up :)

5 out of 5 stars THE Shaolin Temple movie.......2007-06-27

Gordon Liu (also known as Lau Kar Fai) stars as a young man who's friends and family have been killed by the new government. He wakes up at the Shaolin Temple, a place he has only heard about a couple of times. When he realizes he is at the best place possible to learn kung fu, he begs and begs to learn so that he can revenge his family. He does finally get taught, but has to start with the basics. Every part of his body must become stronger before he can learn how to fight. After he finishes the first stages of training in record time, he is now highly respected and moves onto learning actual fighting styles. He breezes through this and becomes a great fighter in only 5 years or so. This is not one of those movies that has 1 or 2 training sequences. Gordon is shown in at least 13 of the chambers and half of the movie is spent at Shaolin. So after he has become a master fighter, he is given a high honor and told that he can become second in charge of any of the 35 chambers. A senior monk played by the great Lee Hoi San objects to this and says that he can't have this honor unless Gordon defeats him in a weapons duel. Lee Hoi San does not play a villain, but he does not think that Gordon is a good enough fighter to receive so much praise. His plan works better than he could have ever imagined. He ends up helping Gordon improve as a fighter and as a person. Gordon is told he can leave Shaolin now, and he goes to take revenge on the evil General who killed his family.

One thing that sets this movie apart is that it tries to be a real movie, and it succeeds. Watching Gordon grow up into a man is remarkable to see. The commentators didn't notice, but a lot of the stuff in this movie is very real. When Gordon has to use the pole with the wieght on the end to hit the bell over and over again, that is a real weight on the end of the pole! Gordon talks in the interview (included on this disc) about how the sabres that Lo Lieh uses in the final fight are real, and it just makes the movie that much better. Dont expect your average tale of revenge. I was touched deeply when I first saw this and there are not many kung fu movies that have as much meaning and feeling.

    Rating- 5/5

Picture quality is remastered very well. It does get a bit darker and lighter in some scenes, but other than slight print damage once or twice, the picture quality is perfect. The Mandarin, Cantonese and English tracks all sound excellent. In fact, I have never heard the English dub sound this good. The subtitles should have been written better, and the English dub is actually a better translation. They are not horribly written, but could have been a lot better. I am not complaining though since this is the only fault on the DVD.

Special features include a great commentary from The RZA and this Andy Klein guy who does not know very much about the genre. Luckily RZA is there to help him point out actors like Lau Kar Wing, Wilson Tong and Hsiao Hou. I found the commmentary enjoyable. RZA talks about his experiences with this movie, and he is definitely a 36th Chamber expert. And I found it pretty funny that he seems to think Gordon Liu is a monk in real life.

The 17 minute interview with Gordon Liu is very interesting. He talks about many things such as training day and night and how great of an honor it was to work with a megastar like Lo Lieh. Gordon skips over the years like people should know what he is talking about, but just in case you don't, I will fill you in. In 1974 Lau Kar Leung was Chang Cheh's top action director and Gordon Liu was cast as a villain alongside Johnny Wang Lung Wei and Leung Kar Yan in movies like '7 Man Army'. When Lau Kar Leung split up with Chang Cheh he started directing his own movies for the Shaw Brothers, starting with 'Spiritual Boxer'. In his next movie 'Challenge of the Masters', Lau Kar Leung cast his younger adopted brother Gordon Liu as the lead. This is what led to Gordon becoming the star of 'The 36th Chamber of Shaolin', the greatest Shaolin Temple movie ever made.

There is a 17 minute documentary on Shaolin that is basically another 17 minutes of awesome info from Gordon Liu.

The 8 minute interview with film critic/scholars Andy Klein and David Shute is a very good description of how great of a movie this is.

The RZA gets a 10 minute interview where he talks about where he first started watching these movies and also gives his thoughts on the Shaw Brothers and explains why the Master Killer in his rap group took that name.

The trailers are the best special feature. The trailer for 'Shaolin Mantis' is very unique. Instead of showing clips from the movie, the actors introduce what kind of kung fu styles are going to be used (be sure to look for Lily Li!). Lau Kar Leung is the director of 'Shaolin Mantis' and doesn't even have a role in the movie, but he gets to show off his ultra awesome kung fu skills quite a bit in the trailer. I think I have watched this trailer about 50 times, and I will eventually master that Shadow style!

Also included are ORIGINAL trailers for 'The 36th Chamber', 'Return to the 36th Chamber', 'Disciples of the 36th Chamber', '8 Diagram Pole Fighter', 'My Young Auntie', 'One Armed Swordsman', 'Infernal Affairs 3' and the original Master Killer US TV commercial.

The last special feature is a gallery of original movie posters and movie stills.

5 out of 5 stars Gordon Liu Pre-Kill Bill 1+2.......2007-06-21

Here he is in his most important role EVER!!!! OK well that's a matter of opinion but it is in this movie that gordon Liu cements his position in the martial arts movie lexicon by totally nailing this role. He would go on to play a mon many times after this but this is the best of those movies, hands down. For years it's only been available in the dubbed version that many of us probalby saw many years ago. but this beautifully restored and fully remastered version should be a part of every martial arts fans movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars AKA Master Killer.......2007-06-21

This is an excellent martial arts classic. It is a must see flick. Typical of martial arts films, there is a training period, and the training this young monk endures is quite interesting and entertaining (don't want to give anything away).

It is one of the few martial arts films I can watch over and over. There are some moderately humorous parts that keep things moving along (not as funny as Jackie Chan, but still some fun).

If you haven't seen this one, you should.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best kung fu movies I've seen..........2007-06-19

What can I say about this movie that hasn't been said before? A classic. Yes. Influential? Absolutely. Entertaining? Most definitely. This movie is as good a place to start as any if you're interested in the Kung Fu cinema. And if you're already into Kung Fu, you've probably heard of this in the least, and I can't imagine why you haven't seen it. As to this release, really the best I've seen. The picture and sound are great, and the language option is nice. Most of the features are nice as well. Though I don't know how useful the Wu-tang clan video was. Still...a worthy DVD to a great movie.

Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Only Funny When Your High.......2007-06-28

I've seen this movie 4 times now and ever since the first time I sit there wondering "What the heck do people think is funny in this movie" - Than I realized that if I had been high when I watched it this movie probably would have been hilarious! That's actually a good thing because than I could have some killer food and laugh at this stuff even though usually I'd just turn it off lol

    4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-26

What is there to say about this, except that this is a classic. Great extra stuff with the DVD and as usual a comical movie from beginning to end. What you would expect form Monty Python.

    5 out of 5 stars Silly, Clever.......2007-06-20

It's easy to dismiss this movie and everything done by the Monty Python troupe as silly, throw-away. But you would be doing yourself a huge disservice. There's an underlying deep understanding of the very legends and events the boys are making such merry fun of.

This 'special edition' was not worth it if you look at it from the point of view of the extra scene - it truly is throw-away. However, the extras range from interesting (how the castle was used in various and sundry scenes) to funny (how to get your own coconuts and run like a silly person around the castle grounds).

As I said, merry fun. Hilarious... don't miss this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, the funniest movie of all time.... totally worth buying.......2007-06-19

This movie is HILARIOUS!!!! No, not the cute kind like in Ella Enchanted, nor the crude kind used with cursing and bad language. It's the kind that has you laughing at every scene and 35 years later repeating lines word for word like "Bring out your dead!" or "I'm not quite dead yet. I'm getting better!" and my favorite, most popular line.." What is the air-height velocity of an unladen swallow?"

The movie is set in the middle ages, starting with King Arthur looking for more knights to sit with him at his round table.

The movie makers came up with everything, from a "Trojan Rabbit" to The bridge of Death to a vicious little bunny, the guardian of the Holy Grail.

The only part I didn't like was "Sir Gallahad's Adventure", which is not very long. not long at all.

Me and my friends liked it This movie so much that we actually wrote a play, acted it out, and filmed it. We wanted to call it Monty Python and the Holy Hand grenade, since we stole most of our ideas from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but we decided it wasn't very original. We called our play The good, the Bad, and the Doofas. sorry, hopping down a bunny trail there. Moving on.

Anywaaaay, This movie is down- right hilarious, adventuresome, and has something fun in it every 5 minutes.

and, no, there are no sad, weepy, slow background scenes where the main character is sitting alone, crying his heart out. no romance scenes either HOORAY!!

5 out of 5 stars Bring out your dead!.......2007-05-31

Where can I start with is classic? It has all of the famous Monty Python skits (missing is the parrot skit) and is still hilarious -- viewing after viewing. The material, after all of these years, is still fresh. My fourteen year old niece recently saw the movie for the first time and it has become one of her favorites. Buy this movie or...I'll turn you into a newt!

North & South is a splendid, four-hour adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 19th century novel about an unlikely, and somewhat star-crossed, love between a middle-class young woman from England's cultivated south and an intemperate if misunderstood industrialist in a hardscrabble, northern city. Daniela Denby-Ashe plays Margaret Hale, forthright and strong-willed daughter of a former vicar (Tim Pigott-Smith) who relocates his family from a pastoral village outside London to unforgiving, largely illiterate Milton, a factory town where John Thornton (Richard Armitage) and his mother (Sinead Cusack), survivors of poverty, rule their cotton mill with an iron hand. Thornton befriends Margaret's father but incurs her wrath for his severity with his workers. What she doesn't notice is Thornton's core sense of responsibility for his employees' welfare. On the other hand, he misinterprets some of Margaret's own actions and intentions. Equally stubborn, the two drag out their obvious attraction over many painful months and events.

North & South's two leads are both very good, though Armitage's brooding, penetrating performance may very well be considered a classic one day. There are other wonders in the cast: Cusack and Pigott-Smith are superb, and Brendan Coyle is memorable as a firebrand union organizer who ultimately becomes an ally to a softening Thornton. The miniseries script by Sandy Welch is a persuasive mix of historical context and character study. Brian Percival's direction is full of moments that linger in the imagination, such as the winter-dream look of a busy cotton mill, with thousands of snowy fibers floating in the air. --Tom Keogh

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I loved North & South!.......2007-07-04

I know that some comparisons have been made between North & South and Pride & Prejudice, but I'd have to say that Richard Armitage's portrayal of Mr. Thornton leaves all Mr. Darcys in the dust. And there is so much more to this story than the romance (although the romance is what will have me watching it again and again.)

I read the book subsequent to seeing the DVD, and I am of the opinion that the film really did justice to the novel. And after reading it, I concluded that the casting in the film was perfect; I simply can't imagine anyone else filling the roles of Thornton and Margaret quite so well.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-27

I saw this randomly on A&E or BBC or something a few years ago, and when I was bored searching on Amazon i was so excited to see it. It really is one of my favorite purchases ever, the best movie to snuggle into at night or on a lazy day.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as Pride and Prejudice.......2007-06-27

I received the movie yesterday and have watched it 2 times all the way through. This is a wonderful video and worth the price. Today good movies are very hard to find. Alot of women look for a romantic movie but one that has substance to it. North and South has that. Mr. Thornton and Margaret tell a tale of a man and woman who come from two literally different worlds. Their lives collide and you can tell from the moment they see each other that there is a definite attraction.

I think the best part is watching the love unfold - not through sex or innuendo but rather through gentle touching of the hands and looks in their eyes and on their faces.

You fall in love with the characters immediately and become part of their world - you laugh with them and cry with them and you love them.

This is a movie for any woman who has romance in her heart and a man in her life she knows belongs to her. Because that is exactly what North and South epitomizes.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding movie.......2007-06-25

I can't believe I just found this incredible movie. It is a work of art from the music to the cinematography to the acting. Richard Armitage's performance is a gift. I loved every minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars Well done, but diverges significantly from the book.......2007-06-21

My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The acting is top-notch and the adaptation is generally faithful to the book. However, given that I knew that Gaskell was a Unitarian and an early feminist, I knew that one of the early scenes could not have been in the book; Gaskell would never have had her heroine become romantically attached to a man who could behave in that way. Sure enough, when I read the book, I discovered that I was right. This scene is not in the book and the eventual outcome makes much more sense without it. This is the major divergence from the text. The others are minor and don't affect the plausibility of the plot. If you want to know what the false scene is, scroll to the end of the review.

Partly due to Margaret's influence, Mr. Thornton evolves from an employer who resents the workers' demands and can't see their point of view to an employer who begins to try to understand and help them. This is not to say that he does a 180. Rather, he comes to have some empathy for them. For her part, Margaret starts out as a crusader, but when the workers' strike turns ugly, she too starts to see that the moral issues are more complex than she had thought. In a sense, the two challenge each other to take on an enlarged moral perspective. Both Margaret and Mr. Thornton are also changed by having to face serious obstacles. As the story progresses, their growing attraction (first his, then hers) becomes evident. Mr. Thornton, as played by Armitage, is compelling. Margaret is beautifully portrayed by Denby-Ashe. The actors who play Margaret's parents and Mr. Thornton's mother do an excellent job. All in all, this is a very satisfying movie.

(SPOILER ALERT: Here's the false scene. Margaret sees Mr. Thornton beating one of his workers. In the book, Mr. Thornton never physically attacks or even threatens to attack his employees. I just remembered another false note - in the book, one does not get the sense that Margaret's father's college chum is romantically interested in her. In the movie, there's an implication that he might be so interested.)

How far would you go to get the person of your dreams? In the first Eating Out, Kyle (Jim Verraros) convinced his straight roommate to pretend to be gay in order to get the girl. Now, with the help of Gwen (Emily Brooke Hands) and Tiffani (Rebekah Kochan), Kyle pretends to be heterosexual in order to land Troy (Marco Dapper), the new guy (and nude model) who's turning the heads of both men and women. He soon finds himself joining the campus ex-gay support group and nabbing a girlfriend (Tiffany)!
