This movie is like spending time with four people you're not really crazy about, but you're stuck with them for the time being, & can't wait to get away. A middle aged man (with a nice chest) going through a mid-life crisis, a hippy/free spirit, a loud, obnoxious boozehound/blowhard, & an annoying housewife (circa early 1970's). The film contains some simple yet enjoyable music from Sissy Spacek pre-"Coal Miner's Daughter".

ANOTHER MIDDLE-AGED MAN FALLS IN LOVE WITH A YOUNG WOMAN.......2005-04-03

Joe Maroney (Monte Markham), divorced for three months, is driving in New Mexico from Albuquerque to his home in Santa Fe when he picks up a hitchhiking free spirit, Ginger Brown, played by Sissy Spacek, and the two subsequently become romantically absorbed with each other as New Year's Eve nears, whereupon Joe's former Army comrade Charley (Mark Miller) and, coincidentally, Charley's former wife Sugar (Susan Oliver) join them with many complications as the product. Hoydenish Spacek is appealing and brings life to scriptor/producer Miller's lines, but bland Markham's metabolic rate seems to be constant throughout and Oliver, a talented actress, is given loathsome dialogue and exaggerates it, without doubt to her satisfaction, while the direction is listless and the screenplay lacks imagination, with only Spacek's reactions, although not always precisely matching her circumstances, shining through this frippery.

I Love Sissy, but..........2004-07-17

I am a great fan of Sissy Spacek but I found this movie to be a disappointment. The idea behind the movie is nothing new but with Sissy, I thought it would be special. Markham is terrible, so unconvincing, the dialogue is bland and the introduction of Markham's friend is nothing more than a diversion from what should have been more development of the relationship between Sissy and Markham, I guess the writers didn't know how to handle that. Sissy is, as always, a delight to watch and with better support from a co-star and better dialogue, her performance would have been much better. She had to have known she was trying to carry a lame story all by herself. The ending was pure Hollywood sappiness. Why in the world would anyone think the 2 of them would make it as a couple?

pleasant TV movie.......2003-08-26

This has the look of a TV movie, shot in 1972 (not 1973) before Sissy Spacek hit it big with BADLANDS and CARRIE.

The story is a common male fantasy. A stuffed-shirt middle-aged man encounters a young hippie free spirit (Sissy Spacek). Naturally, she teaches him to open up, be loose, have fun. He's attracted to her, but also resists her affections, and thus hurts her. But in the end, he realizes how wonderful she is, begs forgiveness, and it looks like they might stay together.

Other films in this genre include BREEZY (with Kay Lenz as the hippie free spirit girl, and William Holden as the middle aged guy), and I LOVE YOU ALICE B. TOKLAS (with Peter Sellers as the middle-aged man).

GINGER IN THE MORNING is a pleasant TV movie, rooted in its time. Although flower children were on the wane by 1972, TV usually comes late to trends, trailing films. (The film credits state a 1972 copyright date, not 1973.)

A dull movie with little meaning and point. I am sort of disappointed in Sissy for this role. She is usually seen with her acting top-notch and performances at their peak. But, in this low-entertainment feature she seems listless and sort of, well, bored with her part.

Spacek stars in GINGER IN THE MORNING as part of a very slim cast. A hitchhiker (Spacek) is picked up by a buisinessman (Monte Markham) and they fall for each other. In fact, Spacek falls for his drunken friend at one point.

This movie lacks energy, pace, and an interesting plot. I would recommend this film only to those who are absolutely obsessed with Sissy Spacek (or any other of the characters) or those who just want to kill time, or money.

Buy this for The Hitch-hiker and Detour.......2004-10-28

"The Hitch-hiker" is a largely forgotten and overlooked gem in the thriller/film-noir genre. It is also Ida Lupino's best directorial effort for the big screen. For years, Lupino graced the silver screen as an actress, most notably in "They Drive by Night" and "High Sierra" (both with Bogart). In the late 1940s, Lupino formed her own production company, The Filmakers with producer/writer husband Collier Young.

The movie follows a pair of war vets, Edmond O'Brien and Frank Lovejoy who get some R and R from their wives to go fishing, and sneak off to Mexicali to troll for dames along the way. As you might well guess, they pick up even worse trouble in the form of hitchhiker Emmett Myers, played with a menacing edge by William Talman.

Myers forces the two to provide safe passage in their beat-up car down the Baja California peninsula to Santa Rosalia, where he can catch a ferry to the Mexico mainland.

The ride along the way is a harrowing trip, the suspense notched up by Young and Collier's excellent screenwriting. Daniel Mainwaring adds a lot of excellent noir dialogue in his uncredited contribution.

While O'Brien gives his usual competent good guy performance, Lovejoy and Talman really make this movie. Lovejoy gives this movie its heart: We sympathize with his character when he attempts to protect and reassure a little Mexican girl when the three stop at a dry goods store to stock up on groceries. Talman plays the killer Myers a bit off-kilter, his lean, elongated figure dominating the other two, his lazy, all-seeing eye holding them hostage while Myers yet sleeps. Talman's powerful performance looks forward to Rutger Hauer's portrayal in Robert Harmon's 1984 "The Hitcher" and Dennis Hopper in most everything he's been in since "Blue Velvet."

What most rings true with "The Hitch-hiker" is Lupino's use of actual shooting locations as opposed to set backdrops, and the cinema verite feel she gives in having her Mexican actors -- most importantly, the DF trooper who hunts down Myers -- speak in Spanish, without subtitles and without caricature. It almost has a documentary feel.

But what really makes this movie gel is RKO's sterling crew, which Lupino hired to put this movie together. One of the reasons this movie has more of a 1940s than 1950s feel is the unparalleled cinematography of Nicholas Musaraca, who was cameraman for many of RKO's best productions, most notably "Cat People" and "Out of the Past" (both directed by Jacques Tourneur). Who else but Musaraca could make a workaday Plymouth sedan appear so dominating and intimidating at it looms over the lonely dirt roads of the Mexican back country?

Musaraca's use of key lighting and deep shadows to heighten the tension really have you sitting on the edge of your seat, as does Leith Stevens' brass-heavy scoring, brimming over with trumpets as a counterpart to the car's horn and string basses portending doom with what legendary movie composer David Raksin called "fifthboding."

C. Bakaleinikoff, the great unsung conductor of RKO's soundtracks, directs with his characteristic Sturm und Drang he used in "Out of the Past" and Hitchcock's "Notorious" (1946).

Sound technicians Roy Meadows and Clem Portman mix the score, sound effects and dialogue superbly, employing a rich bass and a full, robust midrange. Characteristic of 1940s and 50s sound, you can identify every line of dialogue without any neck craning. Compare that with today's special effects extravaganzas, full of Foley effects and swoosh and clang aural graituity, in which most whispers are yet barely audible. Try as they might, today's Hollywood still can't produce a film comparable in technical consistency to the old studio system.

Personally, I rank "The Hitch-hiker" in my Top 10 favorite noir movies of all time. It belongs in such august company as "Double Indemnity," "DOA," "White Heat" and "Out of the Past."

As far as "Detour" is concerned, it is a good effort by director Edgar G. Ulmer, but altogether it is not in the same league as "The Hitch-hiker." Ann Savage's nasal screech gets on my nerves after 5 minutes.

The largely forgotten "Ginger in the Morning" is so because it is largely forgetable. However, since this DVD is a cheapo, it's worth every penny for "The Hitch-hiker."
