5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love Story, Get out he Tissues.......2007-06-18

This is a True Love Story. I watched it on the Life Time channel yesterday and this movis is one I just had to have and share.
The is a explaination of HEAVEN in this movie that will have you weeping, as it did me. I finally found out where Heaven really is.
I cannot possibly imagine anyone not loving this movie. I am sure I will watch it many times.

5 out of 5 stars Romance, Romance, Romance.......2007-05-23

This is a great romantic movie. Reminds me of my husband and me. This movie will make you remember how it was to be in love!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Secret Affair-A Must Watch.......2007-03-08

A Secret Affair is a must see. It is a wonderful sit back and relax romance/drama with Janine Turner and Irish actor Paudge Behan. Set in Venice and Dublin the scenery is spectacular to say the least, the story line is quick and I think should have been a little longer but is really is a good movie. One of those for one you are having a bad or rough day or an evening when you just want to sit back and relax and enjoy a nice romance. Paudge Behan is not that known here in the US but he is a wonderful actor and I wish we would see more of him Janine Turner is always good and this is no exception. The move was made in 1999 and what would be wonderful is if the cast could get together for a sequel with yet another wonderful ending. Let us hope that is possibly in the future. I have watched several times and the friends who have borrowed the movie now want their own copies! So take some time watch, relax and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2006-12-08

This is a great movie Paudge Behan and Janine Turner do such a great job - as does the rest of the cast. The best part of the movie is the scenery - in Venice and Ireland. I own it and have watched it at least 15 times. I have bought this movie as gifts for friends and they all loved it.

3 out of 5 stars Losing Mr. Wrong.......2006-07-06

Just when you think your life is safe and planned, you meet unexpected yet needed life-changing situations. I'm glad that the storyline has explosive turn of events to make a not-so-exciting, predictable story intriguing.

This 1954 dinosaur brings together two giants of Broadway, Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin, just as their moment was passing forever, to create one last hurrah: a celebration of the glories that were vaudeville. Still, it's hard to imagine that Broadway--or nightclub entertaining, for that matter--was ever quite this lavish and satisfying. The story centers on a married couple, the Donahues (Dan Dailey and Merman), who live on the road as vaudeville entertainers, and since they have children, begin incorporating the kids into the act. Eventually, the kids grow up to be Donald O'Connor, Mitzi Gaynor, and Johnny Ray, and they begin having interests of their own. Donald's is an ambitious showgirl (Marilyn Monroe), whose standoffish response to his romantic overtures drives him to drink. Best for its lavish, splashy production numbers built around some of the best of the Berlin songbook, including the title tune and "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody." --Marshall Fine

Description

An all-star cast that includes Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey, Marilyn Monroe, Donald O'Connor, Johnnie Ray and Mitzi Gaynor sparks this tuneful Irving Berlin musical that depicts the trials and triumphs of a veteran vaudeville family. Molly (Merman) and Terry (Dailey) Donahue start out as a duo and keep adding kids to the act until they finally become The 5 Donahues. Their busy, sometimes tumultuous lives aren't always easy, but the Donahues have plenty of love to get them through the hard times and more than enough talent to keep them on top. Highlighted by one classic Irving Berlin song after another and an array of dazzling production numbers, this upbeat, utterly delightful tale of life on the stage proves, beyond and doubt, that There's No Business Like Show Business!

4 out of 5 stars A Near-Classic.......2007-06-13

While "There's No Business Like Show Business" is not one of Hollywood's top musicals it's still worth watching. The story is simple and entertaining. Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Dan Dailey and Mitzi Gaynor are, as usual, entertaining and fun. Though Johnnie Ray tries very hard he shows that he is a singer rather than an actor. Marilyn Monroe is, at best, adequate. While she has never been one of my favorite performers she usually does a better job than she does in his movie.

5 out of 5 stars Superior in all ways........2007-04-11

They certainly don't make 'em like them used to, and this film is a fine example. Excellent songs, actors, story line, costumes, etc. Superb all the way.

5 out of 5 stars The real star of this film!.......2006-09-05

This is a great movie with Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman.
However the real star of this movie is the vivacious Mitzi Gaynor! She steals every scene she is in. She is beautiful, talented, and hard to take your eyes off of!
I recommend this movie ! I also recommend " Anything Goes"
with Mitzi Gaynor. It has just been restored and the look of it is probably the best color of any DVD I own.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE VERY BEST MUSICALS EVER.......2006-05-29

it surpasses many an MGM extravagansa..... I`ve been thinking.... "What and WHO does this film miss? Judy? NO! I`m mad for Judy and will always be a fighter for her and Liza.... but THIS one may be the very best musical I`ve ever seen... If I ever produced or directed a film - this would be it.....

The musical score is out of this world as are the performances, set designs, choreography, costumes and art direction...

It`s a very CinemScoped film aaaaaaaaaaaaaand for the better of it:-)))))))

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn deserved a better script. Her musical numbers are a joy to watch........2005-12-15

Why did Marilyn accept such a limited role as Vicky after she was a full star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is hard to
explain.
Yet there are things in this movie that has caught my attention.
As soon as Marilyn appears as the Hat check girl named Vicky, she mentiones that she has just finished acting in the CHERRY
ORCHARD, a Chekov play. This movie was filmed 2 years before she
joined the Actor Studio. But at this time, she was receiving
acting lessons from Michael Chekhov, nephew of Anton Chekov the
Russian playwright who wrote the Cherry Orchard. One gets the
feeling that this dialogue in the film was ¨suggested¨by Marilyn
herself. It shows the intellectual side of Marilyn.
Her comic ability does not get many scenes. There's is a comic
scene in which she plays with the pronunciation of the word
AFTER, right before she sings her sing AFTER YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT YOU DON'T WANT IT.
Her best number is HEAT WAVE. Even today it does not look dated.
Her other number LAZY is ok, where she shares the number with
Mitzy Gaynor and Dan Dailey. I felt a more glamorous number
could have been selected here.
¨You'd be surprised¨¨ was a number deleted from the film, but it is found in many Marilyn Monroe CDs .¨In Donald O'Connor's song
A MAN CHASES A GIRL Marilyn provides a background voice. This
song was later recorded by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and
it became a hit.
Marilyn deserved a more comic role in this film. Walter Lang did
not know how to make good use of Marilyn's humorous ability. In
her next film, the SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Billy Wilder got a tremendous performance out of Marilyn.

From the Terrace is one of Paul Newman's lesser-known films, but it's a worthy showcase for the actor's developing screen persona. Like Butterfield 8, this is a slick, prestigious adaptation of a John O'Hara novel, about loose morals and forbidden love among the wealthy elite. Director Mark Robson lacks the mastery of melodrama that Douglas Sirk would've brought to this material, but he's still on target with O'Hara's tale of a prodigal son (Newman) who rejects his late father's steel mill in favor of big-business conquest, only to find his trophy wife (superbly played by Newman's off-screen wife, Joanne Woodward) straying into the arms of her former fiancé, while he falls in love with a socialite (Ina Balin) with whom he's much more compatible. A well-tuned drama of marital discord and unchecked ambition, From the Terrace was sharply adapted by Ernest Lehman between the triumphs of North by Northwest and West Side Story, and Newman's brooding performance gave him a solid boost to his iconic role in the 1961 classic The Hustler. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Paul Newman portrays a young man whose struggle for success threatens his personal happiness, in this well-scripted screen version of John O'Hara's best-selling novel. Having never known his father's love or respect, Alfred Eaton (Newman) sets out to prove himself in the business world. Marrying the "right" woman (Joanne Woodward), he works unceasingly, but is ultimately confronted with crises and choices that force him to rethink his priorities. Co-starring Myrna Loy as Alfred's alcoholic mother, Leon Ames as his embittered father, and Ina Balin as the woman who might bring him genuine happiness, From The Terrace is an absorbing tale of ambition, power and love fueled by sharp dialogue, complex characterizations and keen insight into the human heart.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!.......2007-05-07

Though I'm sure this was Quite racy in its day, the ideas and ideals expressed are just as relative to today's world and people. What priorties do we set in our own lives? Who suffers from our failures? And are we prepared to accept the consequences of our actions and desicions?

Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Gift for Grandma.......2007-03-30

My grandmother mentioned that she loves this film. Of course, I had to find it for her. She called me as soon as she received it and said she was watching it that very moment and she couldn't thank me enough.

5 out of 5 stars Striff.......2007-01-19

From The Terrace is excellant. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are always great together, but Ina Balin is sexy and very much in love with Paul. Joanne really plays the spoiled wife at her very best, and Paul drops everything for Ina. A good story, will keep you interested from the first glance. (I am a romantic!) This movie was a gift to a friend, she thanked me highly!!

5 out of 5 stars From the Terrace.......2007-01-12

My favorite movie, Paul Newman at his best, Joanne Woodward a steely ice maiden.

4 out of 5 stars Despite your best efforts, you often become your parents.......2007-01-12

I didn't see what other reviewers apparently saw in this film. I did not see the moral of the film so much concerning the price of success as it being that despite your best efforts, you are often doomed to become your parents. At the beginning of the film, Alfred returns home after the second World War to renounce his father because he has, in Alfred's opinion, ignored his mother while strictly attending to business to the point where his mother has become an adulterous lush. Ten or fifteen years later, Alfred has ignored his own wife while climbing the corporate ladder until his own lonely wife has become an adulterous lush. The only crime of his father's he does not commit is to produce offspring that can be dragged into the mess his life has become. One person with a more warped moral code than either Alfred or Mary seems to be Alfred's boss. While eating lunch he casually informs Alfred of Mary's affair with an old flame. When Alfred reacts by saying that he intends to divorce Mary, his boss warns him against such an action. To Alfred's boss, Mary's behavior isn't a moral failing or a cry for attention - it is an unforgivable breach of etiquette. Overall, the main characters in this film lack redeeming characteristics to the point where the movie almost becomes a film noir soap opera. There are still solid performances by both Newman and Woodward, and it is still worth seeing 47 years after it was made. After all, the idle rich and the mistakes they keep making over and over have not changed that much after nearly half a century.

Bugsy represents an almost miraculous combination of director, writer, and star on a project that represents a career highlight for everyone involved. It's one of the best American gangster movies ever made--as good in its own way as any of the Godfather films--and it's impossible to imagine anyone better than Beatty in the movie's flashy title role. As notorious mobster and Las Vegas visionary "Bugsy" Siegel, Beatty is perfectly cast as a man whose dreams are greater than his ability to realize them--or at least, greater than his ability to stay alive while making those dreams come true. With a glamorous Hollywood mistress (Annette Bening) who shares Bugsy's dream while pursuing her own upwardly mobile agenda, Bugsy seems oblivious to threats when he begins to spend too much of the mob's money on the creation of the Flamingo casino. Meyer Lansky (Ben Kingsley) and Mickey Cohen (Harvey Keitel) will support Bugsy's wild ambition to a point, after which all bets are off, and Bugsy's life hangs in the balance. From the obvious chemistry of Beatty and Bening (who met and later married off-screen) to the sumptuous reproduction of 1940s Hollywood, every detail in this movie feels impeccably right. Beatty is simply mesmerizing as the man who invented Las Vegas but never saw it thrive, moving from infectious idealism to brutal violence in the blink of an eye. Director Barry Levinson is also in peak form here, guiding the stylish story with a subtle balance of admiration and horror; we can catch Bugsy's Vegas fever and root for the gangster's success, but we know he'll get what he deserves. We might wish that Bugsy had lived to see his dream turn into a booming oasis, but the movie doesn't suggest that we should shed any tears. --Jeff Shannon

Bugsy: Extended Cut special features

Anyone who's heard how intense (or perhaps the word is "torturous") it can be to make a film with Warren Beatty will be captivated by the behind-the-scenes extras on the Bugsy: Extended Cut DVD. The highlight is the chat among screenwriter James Toback, director Barry Levinson, and star and co-producer Beatty on how the project and the final film came to be. Tellingly, Beatty is sitting quite apart from the other two, though they're in a semi-circular banquette at Perino's in Los Angeles.

The conversation starts out slowly, with Toback, a genial blowhard, talking about losing the original script, but it picks up steam when the topic turns to the casting of the excellent actors in the film, including Sir Ben Kingsley and Elliott Gould, who also participate. And of course the most interesting off-screen component of the project--Beatty meeting his future wife, costar Annette Bening--is given a fun spotlight in the film. Levinson remembers that after meeting Bening for the first time, Beatty called him enthusiastically saying, "She's great, I love her, I'm going to marry her" ("you know, just a throwaway line," Levinson says, laughing), and Toback and Levinson and Bening herself talk about the signs the two were slowly falling in love. It's as dishy as anything you're likely to see about the notoriously private Beatty, and well worth the investment.

Other extras include several deleted scenes that are now included in the film (and unlike many other "extended cut" releases, actually enhance the depth of the story). One is a harrowing scene in which Bugsy contemplates, and nearly commits, suicide, via Russian roulette. Another is an amusing screen test that Siegal takes, thinking his roguish charm will translate to the big screen. Though it takes Beatty's considerable talents to make that happen, the earnestness of Siegal's outsider character is touching in glimpses like this. --A.T. Hurley

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening star in the incredible true story of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel, the playboy gangster who betrayed the Mob for love. A cold-blooded killer who dreamed of Hollywood stardom, a crazed patriot who plotted against Mussolini, and the brilliant visionary who carved Las Vegas out of the dry Nevada desert, Bugsy had it all. Until he fell for the one woman who wanted more. A critical masterpiece, BUGSY is a remarkable collaboration of Hollywood's best: director Barry Levinson, screenwriter James Toback, and an all-star supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Oscar®-winner Ben Kingsley (Best Actor, Gandhi,1982), Joe Mantegna, and Elliott Gould. But at the center of itall is the white-hot romance between Bugsy and the insatiable starlet, Virginia Hill.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars wouldnt we all have rather seen a movie about moe green?.......2007-03-25

warren beatty indulged himself yet again (tho not as severely as in "dick tracy") in this overblown biopic of gangster bugsy siegel, whose fascination with celebrity led to his virtual one-man founding of las vegas as a gambling and entertainment mecca, and eventually to his murder by the mob once he grew too big for his britches. yet, in a movie paying homage to a man of excess, it is the excess which draws us in. the garishness works here; its a pity that theres no depth -- but then again, in a tribute to las vegas, maybe thats what director barry levinson was aiming for.

3 out of 5 stars Bugsy (Unrated Extended Cut).......2007-03-08

It was a good movie, it fits well among these types of crime films mixing fact with fiction. The extended version adds to the interest.

5 out of 5 stars Must-Have for 'Bugsy' Fans.......2006-12-28

'Bugsy' was one of my favorite films in 1991, mainly because of the sharp as a tack writing of James Toback and the smooth direction of Barry Levinson.

This new two-disc DVD set is a must-have for any fan of this film. The picture quality is vastly improved and more vibrant than the previous single-disc edition. It's a beautiful transfer. In my opinion, the movie is even stronger with the restored footage. There is one particularly chilling and powerful interaction between Beatty and Bening (**spoiler alert** - look for the suicide attempt) that probably should never have hit the cutting room floor. Such great acting.

There is also a very uniquely styled documentary on Disc Two. Screenwriter James Toback, Director Barry Levinson and star Beatty sit at a restaurant and discuss their memories of the process. Film critic Richard Schickel (of TIME magazine), Annette Bening, Ben Kingsley and Elliott Gould also share their thoughts. It is all extremely compelling.

This is the version of 'Bugsy' to own if you're going to.

4 out of 5 stars Good-looking criminals.......2006-03-23

Bugsy is easily one of the most handsome pictures of the 90s, but on a second viewing it's a little less impressive than it seemed at the time. Siegel's life and crimes were too all-encompassing for anything less than a mini-series to do justice to it, but even so it's curious that for a film concentrating on his time in Hollywood and his fatal dream of turning Las Vegas into a gangster's paradise avoids his attempts to squeeze the studios dry by offering a union-fixing protection racket, one of the great untold Hollywood stories of the 40s. But what it does do it does well, offering centerstage to its charismatic, contradictory, impulsive and sporadically violent anti-hero and his equally contradictory lover. The violence isn't glossed over (indeed, Siegel's humiliation of one underling acts as a turn-on for the far from saintly dame), although Warren Beatty doesn't always quite convince when he's required to be pathologically sadistic.

The supporting cast are pretty impressive, especially Ben Kingsley before he disappeared up his own backside post-knighthood and Elliot Gould as a very simple stoolie, but it's surprising that Harvey Keitel was singled out for an Oscar nomination for his good but unremarkable work as Mickey Cohen. Still, it did result one of the best pre-Oscar interviews of all time: when asked what he'd do with his Oscar if he won, he casually replied that he'd smash it over Edward James Olmos' head (Keitel's wife had just left him for Olmos at the time). Maybe Keitel should've played Bugsy himself...

With only a few exceptions (the Back to the Future series and a couple of others), Michael J. Fox has been unable to translate his TV success into movie stardom. It may just be a poor choice of material, such as with this limp Barry Sonnenfeld comedy about a New York hotel concierge trying to save up for his own hotel. What's he saving? The massive tips he gets from hotel guests for whom he does all manner of favors. But his conscience is tested when he falls for the mistress of one of his wealthiest clients and finds he must choose between his integrity and his dream. Fox is appealing, and so is Gabrielle Anwar, as the woman who changes him. But neither can rescue this slow-witted gloss on The Apartment. And what is Sonnenfeld, the stylish director of Men in Black and Get Shorty, doing with this dog? --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Cute Story.......2007-01-04

Great chemistry between Michael J. Fox and Gabriel Anwar. They found a girl short and cute enough to be his leading lady. Doug is a hotel concierge who hustles his tips and saves them up to create his own hotel. He finds a rich sponsor who turns out to be a jerk two-timing his wife and young mistress, a lovely young working girl that Doug is also in love with. Do you go for love or for the money?

Cute story. Dated wardrobe but worth the watch.

4 out of 5 stars One man's search to fulfill his dreams.......2006-10-30

This is one of the films that I most remember Fyvush Finkel for. One would think that name would not be hard to forget, but this is one of his best in my opinion. Michael J. Fox has long been one of my favorite actors ever since the Back to the Future trilogy, and "For Love or Money" is one of the reasons why. He gives a stellar performance in this film, just as he did in Doc hollywood and The Secrets To My Success. I enjoyed watching this film over and over again since I first bought it some years ago now. It is packed with lighthearted drama and comedy that is sure to satisfy most anyone just looking for a good entertaining film. It is a very well writting screenplay, the casting is terrific as is the acting, and it will hold your attention right up to the end.It might not have won an academy award, but it is certainly worth a watch. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars For Love Or Money.......2006-03-19

I have always enjoyed all Michael J Fox movies. For Love Or Money has a good story line and intrigue throughout the movie. His playful character combines seriousness with some lighthearted humour similar to the movie The Secret Of My Sucess.

It is a good movie to watch after a hard day's work at the office.

4 out of 5 stars The Secret of My Success - in a Hotel.......2005-08-29

If you liked "The Secret of my Success" then you will like this movie. Working in hotels I find I have an added fondness for this movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone, especially if you are a Michael J Fox fan.

5 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE EVER , nothing like it!.......2005-04-07

I agree with the other reviewers on this page. This movie creates a "feel" that others have failed to replicate since. Watching this movie makes me feel like I'm floating in a fantasy world, the posh New York lifestyle in Manhattan and the Hamptons. I agree with another reviewer that it's the ultimate feel-good movie, after a bad day, you can just pop this dvd in and feel all your worries melt away. I love this movie, makes me fantasise about being rich and famous in New York, again I just can't explain that magical "feel" to this movie that other movies seem to lack.

This movie is also something of a visual feast! One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen -- the scenery is spectacular! It's like watching a painting or a series of fashion magazine photo shoots in glamorous locations. The cinematography is beautiful -- simply breathtaking!

The Carpetbaggers is the kind of trash classic most people are too embarrassed to admit they actually enjoy. But this Harold Robbins adaptation is so cheerfully vulgar, it's hard not to have a good time--especially given the thinly veiled portrait of Howard Hughes at its center. George Peppard plays the heel-hero, who founds an airline company in the 1920s and buys a movie studio in the 1930s, crushing friends and mistresses along the way. The high cheese factor is aided by the good-time cast: Carroll Baker as Peppard's hot stepmom, Bob Cummings (quite funny) as a cynical agent, and Elizabeth Ashley, who married Peppard, in her debut--uncharacteristically, as a good girl. The sad note is Alan Ladd, looking and sounding very end-of-the-line in his final role, as a man's man cowboy star. Elmer Bernstein's swaggering score helps goose the action along, but the rest is thick melodrama indeed. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars superb movie.......2006-01-29

A great film with an engrossing story- I literally could not take my eyes off it.George Peppard's signature role (better than Tiffany's). If you long for a movie with a great story buy it! Congrats to Paramount for the excellent transfer- sharp with great colours and very little evidence of print damage.

5 out of 5 stars Love the music and the storyline........2005-09-06

I've been a fan of this version of the movie for years. I love the theme music, and the storyline. George Pappard is wonderful also. Definitely dated, a lot of sexist stuff, pre women's lib.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the novel.......2005-08-30

I'm a huge fan of the harold robbins novel but i've got to say that the film is every bit as good and probably better. The only thing lacking id the back story about nevada smith but he has his own film as well so i recommend getting that one also. overall its a terrific story and in a day and age when its all about special effects this film stands alone as a story, and a bloody good one at that!

5 out of 5 stars Riveting Hollywood Sleaze.......2005-07-12

"The Carpetbaggers" is a fantastic adaptation of Harold Robbins' bestseller, very racy for its era, with dialogue that is often rare and juicy, a superb cast, and great direction by Edward Dmyrtryk. The character of Jonas Cord is loosely based on the life of Howard Hughes, and it is interesting to compare this film with Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator." Both George Peppard as Cord and Leonardo DiCaprio as Hughes give brilliant performances, but overall, I find this film far more satisfying, and certainly a lot more entertaining.

Peppard was at the height of his career in this film, and it is perhaps his best. It gives him a wide range of emotions, as well as the physicality and toughness he was so good at. Others that shine in the large cast are Alan Ladd in what was to be his last film as Nevada Smith, Carroll Baker as the sultry Rina, Robert Cummings as Nevada's slick and slimey manager. Elizabeth Ashely as Mrs. Jonas Cord (and who soon after this film was to become the real life Mrs. Peppard), Martin Balsam as the owner of a film studio, and Lew Ayres, as second in command in Jonas Cord's empire, has some of the best lines in the film.

The pacing of the film never lags, and there is a brutal fight between Jonas and Nevada, one of those screen fights that is always fascinating to watch. The Nevada Smith character is quite complex, and was to spawn a "prequel" 2 years later, starring Steve McQueen. The cinematography by Joseph MacDonald is marvelous, the Edith Head gowns lavishly glamorous, and very important to the success of this film is the fabulous jazzy score, which is one of Elmer Bernstein's finest. In my youth I devoured all of Robbins' books, loved the well-written sleaze of them, and loved this film in its theatrical release. I've since watched it repeatedly, and find more to enjoy in it with each viewing. Total running time is 150 minutes.

1 out of 5 stars A Nauseatingly Addictive Train Wreck........2005-07-12

I just got through watching this Dmytryk film on TCM tonight, and all I can say is that if you are looking for the George Peppard who played Paul Varjak in Breakfast at Tiffany's, forget it. In fact, he is so cold and so stiff (I realize he's trying to play a nasty Howard Hughes knockoff), that a cardboard figurine would have been just as convincing in his stead.

Outside of great costumes and sets, this movie is long and boring. Where it's not boring it's a snicker inducing raunchfest. Poor Alan Ladd in his final role, barely having to act as he plays a drunken hasbeen, and Elizabeth Ashley who is the only redeeming character in the entire plot and also resembles Audrey Hepburn to a scary degree in the last half of this debacle. Carroll Baker may be sexy in her lingerie, but she's so over-the-top with her heavy breathing and her lingerie that you actually want to cheer when her car goes off the road.

I can think of better ways to pass my time for 2 and 1/2 hours than this...like watching the mating rituals of moth-eaten underwear. Still, you just can't stop watching it through to its unrealistic ending. If I'd have thought beating up one of my old flames after years of his acting like a total jag would have changed him overnight, I'd have done it long ago! If you must see this lousy piece of 60's smut, make sure you rent it or come across it on TV before you go buying it. I've seen corpses that are more convincing than Peppard was in this flick!

The ever-underrated director Robert M. Young (Dominick and Eugene) made this tense variation on The Postman Always Rings Twice. Edward James Olmos and Maria Conchita Alonso star as a long-married couple who run a fish store. When a young drifter (Arie Verveen) enters their lives as an employee and inhabitant of their home, he and Alonso commence an affair made all the more dangerous when the couple's creepy son (Steven Schub) moves back in. The ensuing Oedipal competitiveness grows to an explosive finale, and while the mythic underpinnings of the story may be a bit obvious, the film moves as fluidly and is as involving as any of Young's fine work. Lots of suspense, a richly noiresque tone, and terrific acting on everyone's part, particularly Schub. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss It!.......2007-05-07

Brilliant script and very well acted by everyone in this movie! I don't know how this movie didn't get more publicity at the time, possibly because it didn't have big box office names, but for everyone who loves an intriguing story, this is one not to miss. This movie will stay with you long after the credits are rolling. Excellent doesn't cover it, the movie is brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Great cast.......2006-10-09

That's it: great cast with a good story and a beautiful body (Alonso). Go for it.

4 out of 5 stars Very good film!.......2006-08-09

The story is about a drifter who is taken in by a middle age couple. The threesome's relationship becomes complex and twisted. To make matters worse their grown son comes back to see the drifter has taken his room and a place in the family. The son is strange and the situation goes from bad to worse.

If that sounds vague, it's because I done want to give up the plot. This movie has a good plot and acting. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Get Caught.......2005-08-24

I saw this movie ages ago at the video store, rented it, and was blown away. It's one of those films that reminds you never to cheat on your spouse! But like another reviewer said, the wife's son is so wicked that you can't help but blame him for the family's demise. The wife and lover happen into this affair naturally-- how could they resist?

This chilling family picnic is the most memorable scene.

This is a great indie film that reminds you not to act on every desire because there are prices to pay.

One of the few 5 star films. If you see it, you'll agree how good it it. It is dumbfounding how a movie like this is so unheard of. I wonder what other films are out there that are awesome that I don't know about.

(One False Move and Bound are two movies not a lot of people have seen that are excellent too!)

5 out of 5 stars Caught in the Act of Brilliance--.......2004-08-17

"Caught" is an Independent movie filled with so much sin that the viewer will feel as if, they too, should ask for forgiveness--

Arie Verveen as the drifter whom appears to be at the wrong place at the wrong time--or if one values adultery, lies, and deception, the right place at the right time.

(Maria Chonchita Alonso) is superb as the gorgeous seductress--The older woman whom leaves (Edward James Olmoes) snoring in bed as she wraps her still beautiful body around the younger man. The sex is so wild it is a wonder Olmoes did not hear them--in the shower, closet, bathroom.

But--to me, the most brilliant role is played by Alonso's son--Steven Schub. There is something so absolutely wicked about him, so evil, the viewer will blame him for the trangressions of the family, instead of the mother.
During a picnic, he sticks his feet in his mother's lap pretending to be her lover--she does not know this until her lover stands to stretch--The look on Alonso's face is unbelievably cold as she rips his feet off of her skirt...

One can only walk with the devil so long--but soon his long nails scratch, destroy, and kill. The sins of the mother will cause the entire family to catch fire, and there is no stopping the flames once they are ignited.

Hell is waiting around the corner...

***One of the most intelligent, astonishing Independent films I've watched in a long time***

Highly recommended****

The incandescent Australian actress Toni Collette (from The Sixth Sense and Connie and Carla) has one of her biggest, juiciest roles in this delicate character study. She plays a geologist stuck babysitting a Japanese businessman when he visits the Australian outback. Some passable road movie stuff and a slow-developing romance keep the slender premise going for a while, and then a single event--which comes quite out of the blue--changes everything. This event also stops the story dead in its tracks, a problem director Sue Brooks can't find a way around. As with so many Aussie road movies, the desert scenery is spectacular and beautifully photographed. But the main reason to see this mood piece is Toni Collette, who creates a vivid character, by turns rowdy and contemplative, a woman who sees life as a lark and discovers that there may be something more to it. --Robert Horton

Description

Toni Collette plays Sandy Edwards, an ambitious geologist who suddenly finds herself having to baby-sit Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima), a taciturn Japanese businessman. Hoping to strike up a business deal, she agrees to take him on a field trip around Western Australia's remote Pilbara Desert. Against the background of the outback, these two diametrically opposed strangers are to find themselves thrust together in a potentially life or death situation. As they journey further and further into the desert, they leave more and more of what they know about each other and themselves behind. Winner of Eight Australian Film Institute Awards including Best Actress (in a leading role), Best Cinematography and Best Film.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Pretty slow, not much substance.......2007-06-12

I could not quite figure out what this movie was shooting for.

If it was supposed to be about cultural or wealth differences between two countries overcome by the similarities between their individual inhabitants, then it hardly offered any fresh perspectives. We get a glimpse of the Japanese man's stressful life back home and a hardly novel observation that Australia offers open spaces while Japan is cramped with no room. Not exactly ground breaking stuff.

If it was supposed to be about unexpected love between two randomly put together characters, then it weakly glossed over some crucial developments. All of a sudden, we are to believe that the Australian woman is in love with the Japanese man. So hasty is this metamorphosis, that the sex scene seemed like a mere physical act between a man and a woman who have decided, "what the hell, we might as well have sex while we're stuck out here in the Outback." This lack of development spoiled the intimate mood that the beautiful music attempted to portray.

If it was about the breath-taking beauty of the Australian wilderness, then maybe it is deserving of its critical acclaim; however, this goal is better accomplished through a National Geographic or Discovery Channel show.

High marks for acting and cinematography but not enough to overcome a feeble story.

2 out of 5 stars Collette's good but that's about it........2007-04-05

The only reason I bought this movie is because Toni Collette is in it and I am a big fan of hers. Plus the movie got good reviews so I figured it couldn't miss. I was wrong. This film is very boring and very slow and from what I can tell relies on one shocking unexpected moment and some good acting from Collette to make it a good movie. It's not nearly enough. Collette is good but it is not her best work. The japanese leading mans performance is average at best. I don't want to give away what happens but I didn't really believe the level of the 2 main characters relationship warrented the reaction we got.

Some good points about the film are Collette, one very enexpexted scene that took me very much by surprise, and the fact that we get to see Collette naked! And yes she looks good.

So if you're a big Collette fan like me you might want to see this but I wouldn't expect much. Collettes best work that I've seen is "The Night Listener".

2 out of 5 stars Shockingly Pedestrian : An Experiment Gone Wrong.......2007-03-11

I seriously think this film is overrated - not only that, it features Toni Colette's worst ever performance and introduces us to the most bland Japanese leading man of all time.

The problems are many - a weak script, a 'shock value' storyline that is actually mindnumblingly boring, and tepid performances from both the lead actors who seem as if they are sleepwalking through the entire low budget production.

I am a huge fan of independent film, but Australia has been making some especially horrendous films of late. What happened? Is this the same nation that gave us gems such as "Priscilla" and "The Delinquents"? I don't quite comprehend the reason behind their decision to promote this film internationally - I mean, it has nothing.

To be blunt, the story revolves around Toni and the Japanese guy on a road trip. They do it for business, but on the way fall in lust, and have sex repeatedly, even after Toni discovers he has a wife and kids back home. There is a particularly agonizing scene where they try to get their car out of the sand its stuck in. Not good. Then there is the prolonged bedroom scene where both actors looking stoned out of their brains attempt to "kink" things up a little bit. I was left wanting them to fall asleep immediately instead. Terrible.

Then the shock element is introduced, and the Japanese dude dies while attempting a really girly jump into a pool (should be seen to be believed). Once he dies, the especially horrendous second half of the movie sees us observing Toni Colette cry in a multitude of ways - Toni crying while sitting, Toni crying by the window, Toni crying during meetings, Toni crying at the airport, Toni crying at the funeral. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where this is going. You got it. Nowhere.

Then the Japanese wife comes to collect the body and through a series of idiotic circumstances finds out that her husband has been bonking Toni. However, all Japanese people are presented as the most gracious creatures to ever walk the planet, and she forgives even this. The final scene where Toni and the wife see each other off is as bad as everything before it. The actress playing the wife seems desperate to be left out of the movie, and Toni is busy crying anyway, so who really cares.

All in all, this is one sick package of the most abysmal movie making ever witnessed to come out of Australia. And someone should really tell Toni Colette not to remove her clothes on camera. No disrespect, but she just shouldn't. This entire film was boring, weak, and if anyone calls this an offbeat art film, they are way off the mark. At the best, this is a monumental mistake that should never be watched.

Do NOT be fooled by the pretty cover. This movie is not worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Tearful tale.......2007-01-31

Many parts of this movie moved too slowly, which was a shame because it was a great idea. In my opinion, a scene with the lawyer where she does some explaining shouldn't have been cut. It just seemed far too awkward that it didn't show the main character having to give an explanation about the death. However, I did love the story and the relationship that developed between Toni Collette's character and Gotaro Tsunashima. Any film that can clean out the 'ole tearducts can't be completely bad. I will say that if there's an award out there for the longest funeral scene, this movie should win. But please don't let the sluggish pace of some areas of the film deter you from watching it. This is a tale with a lot of heart. Also, if you love looking at different places in Australia, there are many glimpses of the vast and mysterious landscape.

2 out of 5 stars A drab boring film.......2007-01-23

In this film that wants to pretend to greatness through its use of an excellent soundtrack, decent outfits and brilliant cinematography the story however goes to the dogs. It is stereotypical "I want to make a foreing film that people will think is poignant" therefore it has a 'foreigner' and a 'european' who must fall in love without emotions in order to be 'multi-cultural'. Unfortunatly it is just not a good film, it has no logic to it and the plot is drab. If it had in fact had no dialouge then it might have worked better and if no one had pretended it was a 'love story' instead the viewer is forced to wit through endless sadness and useless illogical love scenes that are neither realistic or helpful.

Basicaly a bad film that is couched in stereotype, like 'American Beauty' to make us 'think' when there is nothing to think about. Kudos to the music score and camera work.

There may be a pair of impressive ladies in the cast, but don't be fooled--Boom Town is a cool love-hate buddy movie from the get-go. Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy are oil wildcatters who meet during a Texas strike, take an instant dislike to each other, go into business together, tussle over a woman, break up, reunite, etc., etc. The film spans years, and various parts of the continent, as each man gets rich and goes bust with regularity. Claudette Colbert, re-teaming with It Happened One Night co-star Gable, is the woman who comes between them, and Hedy Lamarr presents a more exotic temptation later on. Another star here is the dialogue by veteran screenwriter John Lee Mahin, which--despite the wild, credulity-bending twists in the story--is chockfull of salty, slangy talk. The early scenes in the Texas town are crammed with believable oil jargon and great period touches (such as an entrepreneur who charges money to walk on planks across a muddy street). Director Jack Conway (Saratoga) gets the roughneck appeal of the material, and a sequence involving an oil fire is a knockout. Gable and Tracy, who had worked together so memorably in San Francisco, are a terrific match: Gable is all straight-ahead gusto, declaiming every line, as Tracy underplays to crafty effect. Nice supporting parts for Frank Morgan and Chill Wills span the entire movie, which ends, curiously, in a courtroom and a speech about capitalism. --Robert Horton

Description

Oil! The ebony lifeblood of American industry...and of mighty fortunes made and lost. In search of one of those black-gold fortunes, two bare-knuckle wildcatters dream, scheme, team up and square off in the make-or-break frenzy of a Texas Boom Town. In this pyrotechnics-filled film classic, the only things bigger than the adventure are the four stars: screen giants Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy as the oilmen and Claudette Colbert and Hedy Lamarr as the women in their tumultuous lives. As the foursome struggle through the personal upheaval of love and loyalties, wealth comes a gusher ? and a rig bursts into a screen-filling inferno that could turn dreams to dust. No wonder Boom Town boomed at the box office, too, as the biggest moneymaker of 1940.

Boom Town is a darn good movie about those maverick 'wild/catters' turned loose upon the tundra of those windswept plains of Oklahoma...you can read from other reviewers just how good this MGM vehicle generated...perfect casting makes this film what it is: Clark Gable-Spencer Tracy-Claudette Colbert-Frank Morgan and Chill Wills...ohh, ohh, best eye candy of all....luscious Hedy Lamarr...WoW...is she a head/turner or what!!...every scene she was in, she had my rapt attention...she was a headliner from her European roots filming in the Czech/Republic before those Nazis marched into Prague in 1939, thank goodness she emigrated and MGM put her under contract, no one and I mean no other female actress, can come close to this exciting actress who had.."IT"...oops, watch this wonderful movie [DVD] and see for yourself....Hedy-Hedy-Hedy.... :-)...SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

5 out of 5 stars Update for the Boom Town DVD by Rags to Riches Reviewer.......2006-07-07

The new DVD sharpens the film up considerably. The Theatrical Trailer is included along with a cartoon and Hollywood short that don't have much of anything to do with this great film. As before, I mentioned that I had hoped that all the film would be put back together and although this is a little better there is still some cutting, including the Oklahoma Indian Land Deal Peace Pipe smoking scene which is still missing here. This film was the biggest money maker in 1940. It won an academy award for special effects and deserved it. Why can't we have the whole production on film? Anyway, I still recommend the film for entertainment value. They don't make films for pure fun anymore but this was one of them.

3 out of 5 stars All Star Cast Does Not Equal Greatness.......2005-10-13

Boom Town is the story of two oil men who begin as friends but ruin their relationship over a girl. It is a 2 hour film that should have been done in less time. It tends to drag on and throw in unnecessary plot twists.

Clark Gable is a smart, tricky oil man who strikes it rich by stealing equipment. He plays his character just as he does most of his characters with a strength and arrogant confidence. He is certainly appealing, but he offers nothing new to the part.

Spencer Tracy is likable as the underdog in the friendship. His character is a hard-working man in love with a beautiful girl. When he finds that his girl loves his best friend, he becomes subtlety defeated and pathetic throughout without becoming comical. He is the best part of the film.

Claudette Colbert plays the woman the two men are in love with. She marries Gable's character and they have a son; she is hopelessly in love. However, most of her scenes are generic and simply adequate. She becomes more intriguing when she finds that her husband is cheating on her, but she is not outstanding.

Hedy Lamarr is gorgeous as the other woman whose disguise is working for her lover. Her scenes are brief, but she exudes a sophisticated sex appeal in each of them. Her part truly is not necessary in the film. The fact that Gable's character is having an affair could have simply been alluded to.

5 out of 5 stars Hawks + Cukor.......2005-03-16

I loved it, but I have to agree with the other reviewer who said that something gets lost when Clark Gable decides to go to New York and moves Claudette Colbert and little Jack with him.

The fun of the first part of the picture is replaced by an agonizing melodrama, which I also like, but it could have been two different pictures. The first movie would tell all about Gable and Tracy's friendship and their rivalry over Colbert--a kind of Howard Hawks male bonding movie. The key scene in this one would be the hotel room in the "boom town" in which Tracy and Gable strip to their underwear and Gable starts calling Tracy "Shorty," a nickname he hates but he loves to have Gable call him. The second film is more of a George Cukor story, for once Hedy Lamarr enters the picture as a Dutch lobbyist, this gives Claudette Colbert a whole lot more to worry about than scrubbing oil stains off Gable's overalls. Watching this picture recently I found myself more involved with Hedy Lamarr's role than I had been previously. She's not "brash" and "American" like the others actors (yes, I know Colbert is French but she has that American buzz thing going on) and she's languorous and moody, speaking of herself modestly as a "high class eavesdropper." But she's far from a bad actress, she's a bit more subtle than the other three (not to mention such certified hams as Chill Wills and Frank Morgan). Lamarr's scenes convince you that she was actually a very smart girl, didn't she invent the submarine or something in real life? You can see her brain turning over every possibility in Gable's long, lanky frame, and the glint in his dark eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Rags to Riches Four Times over and more!.......2003-12-18

Boom Town is entertainment. This movie was made in 1940 and is based on a short story. It begins with a partnership/friendship between Gable & Tracey as Big John McMasters & John Sand. The underlying philosophy in the movie is meant to show that no matter how much money you have you were still happier when things were tough! Each man earns and loses about 2 to 3 fortunes apiece. I have lived long enough to have seen the complete movie before our modern day censors got to it, so I can tell you that you cannot get an uncut edition of this movie and this VHS is NO exception. They removed the Indian peace pipe smoking scene when McMasters(Gable) signs a land deal with Oklahoma indians.(pretending that people never smoked.) This subtle cutting is done to a lot of old films and is really silly. Also the "melting" scenes with the sad horn music when people lose all their money have been cut out also. The only one left in is when Compton United goes broke in the oil war with McMasters. Curiously we DO get to see the US Government prosecution of Oil barons and not necessarily in favorable light. This film also takes a shot at the IRS and complains about taxation! (Where are the censors for this stuff?) Anyway, Frank Morgan is great in this work as Luthur Aldridge and young Chill Wills is excellent as a deadly crack shot deputy who just wants to be a ranch cook. The Oil fire scenes received an Academy award for effects and it was top notch for 1940. Girls invade and cause a lot of trouble between McMasters and Sand and their ability to make money but everything comes clean and happy in the end. Well worth a view but please.... if the DVD ever comes out put ALL the film back together!

--Jeff Shannon

warren beatty indulged himself yet again (tho not as severely as in "dick tracy") in this overblown biopic of gangster bugsy siegel, whose fascination with celebrity led
