Description
Expecting to study at Berkeley and become a yuppie, handsome Vikram Gowariker arrives from Bombay to find his host family has moved, he's not registered at the school and he has nowhere to stay. With his money and visa running out, it looks like he's out of luck. But things are not always what they seem - especially in the heyday of San Francisco's punk era. To his surprise, Vikram falls in love with the vibrant city and with Sue (Heidi Carpenter), a feisty bohemian artist working at a local movie theater. Dodging INS agents, the couple resorts to desperate measures, including a hilariously bungled burglary and an impromptu curbside wedding. It all ends happily with a trip to India and a romantic dance number right out of a Bollywood musical. Bollywood style is one of the fastest-growing popular genres today!

My Name is Nobody is a spoof of spaghetti Westerns, but it's also a legitimate, highly regarded entry in the genre. Its pedigree is purebred, as it was executive produced by the maestro of spaghetti Westerns, Sergio Leone, as a personal farewell to the genre that he helped to create. It's a transitional film, cheekily acknowledging the impact of The Wild Bunch and Sam Peckinpah (whose name is seen on a gravestone in one scene) and the popularity of Terence Hill, whose comedic "Trinity" films represented the last gasp of the once-glorious spaghetti Western. All of these elements are beautifully combined in the amusing tale of Nobody (Hill), an ambitious young gunman in 1899 who idolizes a legendary gunslinger Jack Beauregard, played by Henry Fonda in his final Western (and his second for Leone, after the classic Once Upon a Time in the West). Before Beauregard can retire in peace, Nobody sets up a final showdown of epic proportions, and the great Ennio Morricone enhances the abundance of memorable scenes with one of his most playfully inventive scores (including a comical use of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"). Tonino Valerii fully deserved his director's credit, but Leone also made significant contributions (including the opening scene), and the result is a delightful and surprisingly resonant film that Steven Spielberg later called his favorite Leone production. It's easy to see why: Like many of Spielberg's films, My Name is Nobody qualifies as both art and entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Description

3 out of 5 stars Amusing.......2007-07-03

I found this movie to be kind of amusing. If you're not a fan of cowboy movies you'll probably think the movie is kind of stupid. The parts where they show how quick Trinity is supposed to be is obvious. If you are a fan, you will get a kick out of the movie and the many jabs at other westerns. Good (not great) movie that I'm glad I added to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Wow !!!.......2007-06-27

All I can say is WOW!!!
Terence Hill surely has to be labelled as the fastest draw from the West. If you're crazy about western movies, then you really have to get your hands on this one. In particular, I liked the opening scene when Henry Fonda was at the saloon having a shave and all of a sudden all hell breaks loose and Henry delivers a fast draw and leaves and the Barber's son tell his father "wow, did you see that? Can anyone be faster than him"? and his father replies "NOBODY"......Nobody happens to be Terence Hill.

5 out of 5 stars A tremendous movie.......2007-06-09

Easily one of the best of the Trinity series. Barring the lack of Bud Spencer, it can hold it's own against even the great Blazing Saddles as far as I am concerned.

4 out of 5 stars Best Leone Western That He Didn't Direct.......2007-05-25

For sure "My Name is Nobody" is a parody of Leone but like the best satires it works as a homage. It doesn't hurt that the master produced and formulated the basic premise of the film. That said Tonino Valerii does a masterful job as Leone's surrogate. Terence Hill is simply wonderful in his comic variation of Clint's man with no name. It's too bad that he wasn't utilized properly in American films. "Mr Billion" and "Super Fuzz", please. Henry Fonda is at his iconic best as the retiring gunslinger. The polar styles of Hill and Fonda work fabulously. If the film can be faulted it's for length and story lapses. There were times I thought the narrative a little incoherent. Lastly, Ennio Morricone contributes a fantastic score. Morricone not only references previous Leone ventures, most prominently "Once Upon A Time in the West", but also cleverly incorporates Wagner. A qualified success but a success nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars The best of all Terrence Hill Movies.......2007-03-30

This a great western movie.

I think is the best western movie with Terrence Hill and the Master Henry Fonda. No wonder Peter Fonda is a great actor.

Peter Watkins's fascinating biopic about a troubled, nontraditional figure is itself iconoclastic, as it approaches telling Munch's life story through a mosaic of re-enactments, personal diary readings, and faux documentary footage, often repeated for effect. Distant from his father, Munch finds sustenance in a short-lived affair with Mrs. Heiberg (Fraas), a married woman from whom he draws inspiration. Using a variety of sound and color elements to convey Munch's state of mind, Watkins's engrossing film mirrors the inner turmoil of its talented subject.

5 out of 5 stars ELVIS AT HIS BEST ON STAGE IN LAS VEGAS!.......2007-06-17

This is the best footage of Elvis on stage in Las Vegas. The original release included a lot of fan interview footage which was kind of boring, but it also included added footage of Elvis singing songs which were eliminated in the 2001 "Special Edition" version. Both versions are included in this set, so if you don't have both and want them, this is the set for you.

The miracle about Miracle is that it gets so many details right in telling its 24-year-old story about the historic victory of the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 Olympic Games. It's typical for Hollywood to compromise such period details as hairstyles and fashion when catering to a contemporary audience, but Miracle looks and feels right in every detail, capturing the downbeat mood of post-Watergate America while showing how obsessively determined Minnesota hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) managed to assemble a once-in-a-lifetime team and whip them into a victorious frenzy over their Soviet champion opponents. With sharp support from Patricia Clarkson (as Brooks's wife) and Noah Emmerich (as his long-suffering assistant), Russell grounds the film with a well-balanced combination of aloofness, intimidation, and closely guarded strategy. No doubt the real Brooks (who died in a car accident shortly after filming completed) would have approved. Thanks to director Gavin O'Connor (Tumbleweeds) and the producers of the similarly laudable sports films Remember the Titans and The Rookie, Miracle brings plenty of heart--and historical accuracy--to an old, familiar formula. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history — the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as the dynamic and determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream -- beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of 26 undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned 20 of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable -- and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Miracle - More than a Sports Story!.......2007-07-04

A story of powerful healing & believing, incredible human ability to achieve the "impossible" when using heart body and soul and working as a team, preparing and believing. Wonderfully inspiring, incredible coaching and spirit displayed by young men when our country needed this healing and unity. Love this movie and display of determination, belief, love, patriotism, and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars "On A Sheet Of Ice In Lake Placid, New York" ~ Knowing When It's Your Time.......2007-04-27

Who will ever forget that memorable Winter Olympics in `80 when a young, inexperienced U.S.A. hockey squad beat the juggernaut Russian team in the semi-finals on their way to the gold medal? Well if you have just watch this movie and rekindle the memory of what was unquestionable the ultimate moment in the history of American hockey.

Released in '04, the inspirational sports film `Miracle' is a nostalgic look back at a time before professionals took over the Olympic games and young, starry-eyed college kids reached for that one glorious moment of fame. Yes it's overly sentimental and just oozing with saccharine but deep down inside I think that's how most of us want to remember this game anyway. U.S.A. versus Russia, doesn't get any better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling.......2007-02-04

It is easy to summarize the plot behind this movie. It is about the 1980 U.S. hockey team that went all the way to gold in the Olympics at Lake Placid. What is harder to summarize is the era and feelings of the United States at that time, and just what a kick in the behind this game was for the U.S.

1980 was a very bad time. Inflation was horrible. We recently left Viet Nam, failing to accomplish whatever mission we had. Students kidnapped Americans from the embassy in Teheran. We suffered from a president who was tied to a politically motivated hotel break-in and from a president who was unable to effectively deal with politics in Washington, D.C.; then came the 1980 Olympic hockey team.

The hockey team of the Soviet Union was the dominant team for 20 years. They were favored to win the 1980 Olympics. The U.S. team might have a shot for bronze, if we were lucky. Instead, the U.S. team kept beating teams that "everyone" expected to beat the U.S. Americans began holding their breath as the team played each new opponent, and won. It was amazing. The gold medal game against Finland was almost an anti-climax after the game against the Soviet Union. While Coach Brooks was there to play hockey and go all the way, the biggest hurdle was going to be the tough, professional Soviet team.

This movie captures it all; the feeling of the era, details of the era, the thrill of each team victory, and Coach Brook's refusal to celebrate any victory until the truly important one. I was amazed at Kurt Russell's performance. He is compelling as Coach Brooks. Brooks is obsessed in his drive to make his team the best, and he skillfully transmits that obsession to his players. Kurt Russell was perfect for the role of Brooks, and it is one of his finest moments in a movie.

This movie is perfect for most members of the family, and may well serve as an inspiration for some family members. Some younger members of the family may be distressed by the violence of hockey, which is well replicated in this movie. You may not want to be eating while watching some portions of the movie.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars good uplifting movie.......2007-02-03

i like the perspective the movie tried to portray, that individual Olympians who are great at what they do are not representing themselves, but are representing their country. im really glad our hockey team won in those adverse times and that this movie was made to reflect a bit of the triumph they experienced.

Originally hatched in 1978 as a short film parody for Saturday Night Live, this expanded, 70-minute mockumentary on a trend-setting quartet of British mop-tops bloomed into one of Eric Idle's better projects outside Monty Python. Taking the career (and hagiography) of the Beatles and inverting them quite nicely, Idle conjures up four doppelgangers who offer the familiar mannerisms but practically none of the intelligence of their models. If that sounds like the same gag that powered This Is Spinal Tap (which emerged six years later), it is, with the crucial difference that Idle's lampoon is precise where Tap was consciously generic.

In telling the saga of the Rutles, Idle (who doubles as earnest narrator and McCartney-esque Rutle Dirk McQuigley) works from a rich and immediately familiar trove of pop lore, and he has a ball revisiting and reinventing milestones from the Fab Four's fabled history. The attention to period detail helps elevate the gags further, but Idle's real secret weapon is Neil Innes, standing in as Ron Nasty, the Rutles' answer to John Lennon: it's Innes who serves as the musical architect for the wonderful Beatles parodies that give All You Need Is Cash a delicious kick, and Innes, a one-time principal in the legendary Bonzo Dog Band, is gifted enough to capture the band's lyricism and energy as well as their shifting sense of style.

With the blessing and on-camera participation of George Harrison, and wry cameos from Mick Jagger and Paul Simon, All You Need Is Cash is a perfect companion to the Beatles' own glorious screen comedies and a great antidote to sanctimonious pop documentaries. --Sam Sutherland

2 out of 5 stars Only a few laughs.......2007-06-16

I enjoy Monty Python and I am a big Beatles fan, so I was surprised I didn't like this movie. Basically, there are only a few laughs, and they weren't specific to the Beatles so it could've been put in any mockumentary. What also disappointed me was there was not much interaction of the Rutles - you don't get to see them talk to each other much, which could've provided many funny moments. The song parodies weren't that funny, either.

What I did like was the visual aspects of the movie - they really did get the look of the Beatles throughout the years pretty accurately. It was also good to see many of the original Saturday Night Live cast and they provided much of the few funny moments in the movie.

If you want to see a funny mockumentary, check out "Spinal Tap" and "Fear of a Black Hat". Both movies have two necessary ingredients that this movie lacked: hilarious banter between the band members and funny lyrics in the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Python meets Spinal Tap.......2007-04-26

This is a wonderful spoof of the Beatles, which deserves a higher reputation than its fairly obscure standing.

Neil Innes is outstanding as 'Nasty' (i.e. Lennon), and of course was also responsible for the wonderful spoof songs ("Let it Rot" "Ouch" "A Hard Days Rut" etc"). Eric Idles presenter is a classic Python type character. The scene at the beginning where the presenter is being filmed from a moving vehicle which gets faster and faster is pure Python.

There are cameo roles for George Harrison, Mick Jagger and Paul Simon. George Harrison isn't playing himself, so you have to look a little harder to spot him.

Along with Spinal Tap (which was made 6 years later) this is the best spoof 'rockumentary'. Its very funny and I recommend it strongly.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies ever made.......2007-04-10

OK, so it helps to know The Beatles inside and out to totally get this movie. Even if you don't, it's still a riot. But if you do know The Beatles, this is perfect. It's the funniest movie I've ever seen.

Idle and Innes hit a grand slam here. Every scene is hilarious, nearly every line is a complete crack-up. The Beatles needed to be spoofed and they gave their blessing for this project. My guess is they even found it funny (though I doubt John liked seeing Nasty's wife portrayed as a Nazi).

The capper is the music. Some of the songs are just brilliant rip-offs, combining two or three elements of three Beatles songs. Example, "Hold My Hand" combines "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the "Eight Days a Week" intro, and "She Loves You." Just priceless.

If you like The Beatles, you'll really like "The Rutles." If you like great comedy, you'll love this. It's a can't-miss classic!

5 out of 5 stars The Rutles........2007-03-09

Saw the Video when it fist came out. It was great then, even better now!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Ruttles - All you Need is Cash.......2007-01-18

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Idle/Innes are in rare form as the dynamic duo lovingly give the Fab Four a Pythonesque makeover. Anyone who love the Beatles and Monty Python MUST own this movie! The interviews alone are worth the price of admission! Mick Jagger.. Paul Simon.. Ron Wood.. (and see if you can spot 'THE' George Harrison). Hats off to Niles Innes for the music - 'spot on'! If you didn't know any better, you'd have thought you'd stumbled onto some old Beatles recordings that were never released to the general public. Tongue firmly planted in cheek! 'Nuff said.

Thanks to director Gavin O'Connor (Tumbleweeds) and the producers of the similarly laudable sports films Remember the Titans and The Rookie, Miracle brings plenty of heart--and historical accuracy--to an old, familiar formula. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS MOVIE .......2007-01-28

Based on Po Bronson's novel, the computer comedy The First $20 Million Is Always the Hardest is a Revenge of the Nerds for the 2000s. Andy (Coyote Ugly's Adam Garcia) is a Silicon Valley marketing executive who decides to chuck it all--the money, the superficial girlfriend, etc.--for the chance to work at high-tech think tank La Honda. Head genius Francis (Just Shoot Me's Enrico Colantoni) doesn't like the looks of the slick new guy and challenges him to come up with a $99 laptop. To his amazement, Andy and his ragtag band of socially inept misfits (Ethan Suplee, Jake Busey, and Anjul Nigam) actually succeed, but then Francis tries to take all the credit--and the profits. If the Jon Favreau-adapted story is largely implausible, it's entertaining nonetheless, and Men in Black II's Rosario Dawson is charming as the free-spirited artist who inspires Andy and the gang. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

      Product Description

Get the long and the short of the Three Stooges in this exciting Old West double feature, which contains one feature-length film from the '60s along with a classic short film from the '30s.

The Outlaws is Coming (1965), also known as The Three Stooges Meet the Gunslingers, is a wacky Western in which Larry, Moe and Curly-joe co-star with Adam West (TV's "Batman"), Henry Gibson (TV's "Laugh-In"), longtime Stooge sidekick Emil Sitka and Nancy Kovack (Frankie and Johnny). The Stooges are sent, along with an editor, by a conservationist magazine publisher on the East Coast to inversigate a gunslinger who is wiping out the buffalo population in the West in order to turn the Indians against his enemy, the U.S. Cavalry. With a little help from Annie Oakley and an unusual cache of weapons (including cream pies), they are able to dodge the posse's bullets...and make the West safe for the wild creatures that roam its frontiers.

BONUS SHORT FILM: In Goofs and Saddles(1937), Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard are enlisted by Civil War General Muster to help save the country from a notorious cattle rustler.

      1 out of 5 stars Awful!!!!.......2007-01-03

I bought this for my 8 year old who has recently taken an interest in the three stooges and this was an awful example of their funny work!!!! This was not funny at all!!!! Better stick with the short television episodes!!!

      4 out of 5 stars It wasn't half-bad.......2006-10-05

I was actually surprised at how decent this movie turned out to be. Unlike almost all of the other DeRita features, this one seemed to actually have a half-decent script and a pretty good supporting cast (particularly Adam West, pre-Batman, and the always fantastic Emil Sitka in three different roles), in lieu of the embarrassing childish inane scripts plaguing their other features. While this certainly doesn't merit classic status or rank among their greatest, nor was it made when they were in their creative and physical prime, it's also pretty enjoyable for what it is. There may not have been a lot of funny scenes, but the strong plot makes up for that deficiency. I also liked the unique and creative opening credits, and though the Native Americans were portrayed somewhat stereotypically, at least the scenes with them here, in 1965, are head and shoulders above the racist and offensive way they were being depicted onscreen even like 20 years earlier. They even have one young Native American who has gotten an education at a university, isn't wearing the ceremonial clothes everyone else is, and actually takes one of the bad guys to task for talking to them like they can't understand proper English. That's probably about as enlightened and progressive as one could have hoped for in 1965. However, as good of a supporting cast and script as the movie had, there were some dated jokes, like the conversation about Colts being a spoof on a then-current commercial and a reference to Dr. Kildare. This aspect of the movie hasn't made it age well, just like most movies and tv shows with a lot of topical humor. Also interesting to note is that the outlaws are played by the hosts of Stooges tv programs (marketed of course towards children, their prime audience during this final stage of their career); one of them, Don Lamond, was Larry's son-in-law.

Also included as a bonus is the short 'Goofs and Saddles' (1937). It's halfway-decent, but since it's a Western, it has the typical slow pace and therefore just isn't very funny or interesting. However, it does pick up the pace somewhat in the second half, after they lose those ridiculous wigs and false moustaches (though it was interesting to see Curly with the wig, since it gives one an idea of what he might have looked like before he joined the group and had a full head of long wavy hair). Another downside to these Westerns, besides the slow dull pace and the fact that they were never believable as slow-witted cowboys, is how restrained Moe is. Where's all of the punishment he usually inflicts on his mates, or all of the insults and rebukes? He's just not mean enough in the Westerns!

I would actually recommend this to someone interested in their feature-length films, even though saying one of the DeRita films is above-average still isn't saying that much, considering what most of the rest of them were like. At least this one can be enjoyed by people over the age of ten, and combined with the stronger than usual script and supporting cast, it's one of their few features that can be enjoyed by those of us who aren't nostalgic aging Boomers.

4 out of 5 stars The Three Stooges - The Outlaws Is Coming DVD.......2005-08-17

It's always great to get new Three Stooges episodes/movies in DVD Format. I have every DVD title that Amazon.com has ever offered. They were so far ahead of there time. Although, this is not their best outing - considering the Curly, and then Shemp, had unfortnately passed on before this title was produced - It's still a very fun movie to watch. Moe & Larry always kept the legend alive until the end. In my opinion - The Three Stooges were, and always will be, the greatest Comedy Team ever.
