It's exactly what I wanted. Reasonably priced and delivery was very fast.
Good quality DVD's! I'm a fan of Dean Martin and I liked the movies very much. It was back to my youth by viewing them.
And now for Sergeants 3!
What a pity that movie is for the moment not available.

"My kind of town, Chicago is...." The last film venture by the Rat Pack finds Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. in an update of the Robin Hood legend, set in Chi-town in 1928. The boys play gangsters who become Jazz Age Merry Men; Bing Crosby is their eloquent spokesman. As usual, women are in short supply within the featured cast, but the film is colorful enough anyway with its period trappings. By the time this movie was released in 1964, the Zeitgeist was already shifting toward the Beatles, and Frank, Dean, and Sammy looked like your father's entertainment. But while this film is no knockout, director Gordon Douglas (Young at Heart) makes it a pleasant enough way to say good-bye to the Rat Pack's life together on film. --Tom Keogh

Although I am not a fan of musicals, I found this to be a funny adaptation of robin hood. Dean Martin is one of my favorite actors, and watching the 'rat pack' in action is always entertaining.

Sinatra and his Hoods.......2007-01-17

In early 1960's, Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack were asked to do a musical, after the hit film Ocean's 11 (note for those unfamilar, this is NOT the Clooney version). Frank, Dean and Sammy did their version of Robin Hood. Supporting them in this film were Barbara Rush, a pre-Columbo-ed Peter Falk and Bing (White Christmas) Crosby. This film reminds me of Sinatra's Guys and Dolls

The story is a gangstered 1920's ish, Chicago mob story with music. The Rats are minus Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, but you wont miss them in the romp. Crosby does a sendup on his image in a trio song with Sinatra and Martin. Sammy solos in Bang! Bang!, showing tap dancing and GUNS can go together in the hand of a master showman. Falk steals every scene he is in with such aplomb, you wonder why he did not do many more comedy.

the Sammy Cahn score, orchestered by Nelson Riddle is first rate and pure Sinatra with songs like My Kinda Town Chicago.

Extras include Frank Sinatra jr audio commentary, which gives great insights into the film itself and its making

Robin And The Seven Hoods mirhfully gives the Robin Hood legend a depression-era , Mobtown Chicago settings .There , North side boss Robbo (Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) hopes to get a leg in his power struggle with rival Racketeer Guy Gisborn ( Peter Falk 1927 - ) . Robbo sets himself up as a latter-day Robin Hood with Philanthropic front enabling him to scam the rich , take his cut and then give to the people . Dean Martin (1917-1995) , Sammy Davis Jr. (1925-1990) , Bing Crosby (1903-1977) , and Barabara Rush (1927 - ) , join in the giddy , gansterish fun . And the jazzy Sammy Cahn (1913-1993) / James Van Heusen (1913-1990) score (including Sinatras classic : My kind of Town) is the perfect match for this all star cast , when you share the music and merriment of Robin and The 7 hoods . A Funny and Cherish movie ! . Recommended

Dated and Dull.......2006-03-02

The central idea of this movie is the activities a 1920's Robin Hood and his band of gangsters. Unfortunately, even the Rat Pack cannot save this movie. The script is slow, dated,and dull. Barbara Rush's scenes are especially confusing. Her scenes almost seem to be part of a different movie. Nothing comes of her apparent interest in Sinatra or Martin which makes me wonder why they made the final cut. The main actors seemed to be bored, and with the exceptions of Bing Crosby and Peter Falk, walked through their performances. (Maybe they were hung over most of the time?)
Save your money and borrow it from your local library.

Robin and Hoods to be West End Musical.......2006-01-30

I have it from an inside source that ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS will soon be a bonafide stage musical opening in the West End, and starring Christian Slater in the Sinatra role. Should work well on stage. I for one, can't wait, as I have always loved the score.

Not as strong as it should have been..........2006-09-03

Starts off great--mob comedy kinda thing with some good sharp lines and strong acting from Vincent Berry, Kevin Pollak, Seymour Cassel, Richard Foronjy, and Joe Mantegna, not to mention Jennifer Tilly. We get to the halfway point and it's still relatively good.

Then things start to unravel. Cassel, who plays a mob boss and Mantegna's father, orders his son to hit a specific person who belongs to the family of a rival mob, after an opening scene in which a teenager is killed in an explosion. The teenager is a relative of Cassel's. We know we're in serious trouble when Mantegna and his crew can't find a suitable hit man and squabble about it. They finally "hit" on Joe Pantoliano, who plays Charlie Flynn, a nutjob confined to a loony bin, who also happens to be married to Jennifer Tilly, Mantegna's former lover.

After that, the comedy element just about disappears completely and we have a film that has truly lost its sense of direction. The person to be hit by Mantegna turns out to be a big surprise and then when one of the characters, later, is tragically killed, the film has, it's obvious, given up trying to be coherent and is seen shrugging its shoulders--"Why me? I'm just a movie. Do I have to make sense so that you the viewer can enjoy me? NO. I DON'T. So don't try to make me."

Groan. For a much better film written and directed by the same filmmaker, Mark Malone, see Bulletproof Heart with Anthony LaPaglia and Mimi Rogers. Unfortunately, it's not on DVD. But it's a strong piece of work. The only reason I gave Hoods two stars is because Mantegna, Tilly, and Pollak all turn in strong performances, even though the material is weaker than Grade Z shampoo.

Mediocre, but it has its moments.......2004-10-04

This is not the best movie ever made in this genre, but it has a sort of pathetic realism which makes it worth seeing. It is not a true comedy, though some of the scenes are humorous, such as when Meg Tilly seeks to seduce Mantegna after getting married to another man, breaking up their affair which was held during Mantegnas' own marriage. It's Angellos' (Mantegna) 50th birthday and things are not going well. His father has ordered him to hit a rival mob members relative, but nobody knows exactly who it is they are supposed to "whack". Faced with the dilemma of killing a noncombatant and the problem of finding a person to accomplish the task with only 5 hours to get the job done, things slide downhill rapidly.
Pollack turns in a fine performance, as does most of the cast. The pacing drags at times, and the flashbacks to Angelos' childhood sometimes distract the viewer. The main problem with the movie is that it's not funny enough to be a comedy, and not deep enough to be a drama. The movie would have been better if it was more over the top as a comedy, or explored the relationship with the father more as a drama. While it raises some interesting ethical questions, loyalty, revenge, ect., it never seems to get around to exploring their meanings. However there is enough here to make the movie worth viewing at home, with breaks to run to the kitchen during some of the slower parts. A good movie for those times when nothing new has come out on video you want to see.

Boring !!!.......2001-03-04

Despite the stars in this movie, it is a very boring affair. Hoods is about a wise guy played by Joe Mantegna who is assigned by his father to kill somebody by the name of "Carmine Delaroza" who turns out to be a 9 year olds kid. Despite being sold as a comedy, this movie is not funny. The DVD is in full screen. No closed captioning (despite there is a CC on the back of the jacket). No Dolby 5.1 either. The picture quality is OK. Avoid this. Not worth it.
