Gorgeous to listen to and gorgeous to look at, Celtic Woman is perfect PBS fare, sort of a Riverdance without the dancing. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show's solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha's "Danny Boy" and "She Moved Through the Fair," and Chloë Agnew's "Ave Maria" (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV selections range from Agnew's "Walking in the Air" (The Snowman) and "Someday" (Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame) to Lisa Kelly's "May It Be" (the Enya song from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the King) and Órla Fallon's voice and harp rendition of "Harry's Game." A fifth woman, Máiréad Nesbitt, adds some variety by fiddling "The Butterfly" and "Ashokan Farewell" (best known as the theme from Ken Burns's The Civil War). Occasionally the singers join together, as in Enya's "Orinoco Flow," an a cappella rendition of West Side Story's "Somewhere," music director David Downes's composition "One World," and a stately version of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Celtic Woman was created by Downes (like many of the other performers, a Riverdance veteran) along with Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of the Celtic Collections record label. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman DVD.......2007-07-04

Excellent DVD of the 1st show by outstanding artists. Provides an interesting history of each artist and how they came together to become the premier Irish women group.

2 out of 5 stars Bad Lip Sync .......2007-06-30

As many others have commented the bad lip syncing just makes it seem so...well, fake. As another reviewer commented, it was empty and soulless to me. It's like they wanted to remove the possibility of making a singing mistake and concentrate all their efforts on looking beautiful. I want to see performers singing a song not pretending to sing a song.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Women Music.......2007-06-27

This is music at its best. Of all the music I listen to I choose this CD. I cannot imagine anyone not liking this music. If I could only pick one CD to keep I would choose Celtic Women. It is the best!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but much the same........2007-06-24

This example of the many "Celtic Woman" DVD's and CD's is fantastic in the purity of voice and visual presentation. Others have detailed the individual performances and the presence and beauty of the performers. I agree completely! However, I also found the total concert(?) a little flat and much too even in tempo and pitch. That is, I hoped for more variety and a more boisterous presentation. (Possibly, a tiny bit more like "Riverdance"?) Overall, it was great. But, I found it faintly boring.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman- A Winner.......2007-06-11

The performances by these Irish-born beauties are truly spell-binding. The songs, the voices, the setting and the costumes all take you on a magical trip to the Emerald Isle. We loved every minute of it.

3 out of 5 stars It's alright.......2007-06-09

For someone who's been trying to have a baby and NOT very flexible. I think this dvd is a bit hard, especially the forward bends! Don't get me wrong I LOVE BRENDA STRONG and her need to help people conceive. It's just her positions are hard to get done and I feel like I'm not completing her exercises, therefore, really stressed out thinking if i can't do this correctly how can i conceive. I'm sure some of you would understand what I mean. - I found a DVD with a few similar positions (with help for people who can't bend so much) its called Yoga for Weightloss. I would play the DVD and then pause it so I may add the positions in Ms. Strongs dvd that I could do and think might be important. I find it less stressful for me to do. I hope this helps anyone else in my position (ha!)

5 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2007-01-07

I haven't used it much since I bought it but I found it easy to follow and extremely relaxing. I have never done yoga before using this DVD. The DVD taught me about a certain kind of breathing (can't remeber the name, something like oojiyee breath), but I can honestly say that I have never found a way to make myself so relaxed. Half of the time I followed the DVD, I quit half way through, got in bed and went to sleep because it made me so relaxed, which is exactly what I was looking for - a way to reduce stress.

2 out of 5 stars Very difficult, no modifications for non-experts.......2006-10-11

The yoga routine in this DVD has a very high level of difficulty. You would already need to be a super-flexible yogini to be able to perform most of the moves. Brenda Strong very rarely suggests modifications, and she sounds critical of those who can't do the poses as perfectly as she can. For example, she will say "if your hamstrings are so inflexible that you can't so-and-so." They only show Brenda doing the poses, rather than a range of people. I much prefer the Monica Morrell video, because Monica seems to be more of an expert in this area, the poses are much more doable, and it shows a few different women doing the poses.

5 out of 5 stars A great help.......2005-12-23

Not having practiced yoga in the past, I was pleasantly surprised that the poses presented here were easy to execute after only a few attempts. I now look forward to using this DVD to relax, especially before bedtime. It appears to help me sleep better, clear the sinuses (!), and increase flexibility. My running workouts (I am a half-marathoner) have even been enhanced since I began using this DVD. I am hoping that this practice will positively affect fertility by improving my overall health and well-being. I'm not pregnant yet, though!

4 out of 5 stars Good video, but long!.......2005-09-17

The main yoga session is seemingly long...with long stretches between pose changes. A little slow for me, but it is relaxing.

4 out of 5 stars saddle club movie.......2006-08-30

My daughter is crazy about horses and we've watched lots of Saddle Club. This movie is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Great Movie.......2006-03-24

Any horse lover will love this movie.A great family movie to.Me and my Mum really loved this movie because my Mum loves horses to.

4 out of 5 stars Horse Crazy.......2005-11-20

This is a sweet movie how three friends, Lisa, Stevie, and Carole work together. First,a movie star that Lisa has a crush on, comes to Pine Hollow. His name is Skye Ransom. All three friends work together to train him how to ride. Next, Max falls in love with a lady who writes newspapers. Her name is Debrah. She doesn't like horses so the saddle club works together to help Max be a gentelman. The last story is how there is a cowboy camp, and they find a horse and the think that it is cursed. Stevie tries to keep the horse. Will she? This is a recommended movie for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Horse Crazy.......2005-08-16

Good movie. In the movie before this Max and Deborah allready knew each other but in this movie they were just meeting so that was wierd. In the movie Skye Ransom comes to Pine Hollow and Lisa's sister Melanie gets a part in the movie they are shooting at Pine Hollow. There is a lot of Romance between Max and Deborah in this movie. You'll have to find out the rest for yourself. GOOD MOVIE!

5 out of 5 stars I reccomend this movie to everyone!.......2005-07-27

This is a film me and my mum both enjoy! I pre-ordered it and when it came i put it right on and watched it...it was not the best out of all 3 of the released Saddle Club movies but it was second best. This film is great for families who ride horses or just love them! It deals with some new found love among the girls. So it keeps you thinking as Lisa and her mates Carole, and Stevie fall in love with superstar, Skye Ransom and get the once in a life time chance to give him riding instruction! Then when Stevie finds the horse and Veronica's mate Kristy falls in love with a cowboy...Veronica thinks the cowboy is not very sutiable. And when Stevie brings the horse back to pine hollow everyone thinks she is cursed...and well i don't want to give away the whole flim! So tween and teen girls, i suggest you watch this film at slumberparties with your best mates and with ur mum and dad and brothers and sisters at home! Enjoy!!

Relaxing, strengthening, and allowing oneself to feel rather than think have long been associated with ancient yoga practice. Instructor Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa expertly ties this essential combination of physical experiences together in a gentle exercise video for pregnant women of all fitness levels. Prior to the 45-minute routine, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa discusses the role of yoga in helping with pregnancy; the calm and security that develop through guided breathing and gentle movement are transferred from the mother's body to her growing baby. The nonimpact routine itself provides ample warm-up, toning, and conditioning portions, as well as a deep, head-to-toe relaxation and visualization segment. Ten pregnant students (all pleasantly unrehearsed) stretch, bend, and learn along with the viewer, to the peaceful sounds of a live band consisting of wood flute, bass, quiet drum, and shimmering bells. Every bit as enriching for the soul as it is for the body. --Liane Thomas

1 out of 5 stars Chanting and shrill voice make it hard to relax.......2007-06-21

I was extremely disappointed in this DVD. I've done yoga from DVDs before and have never been so annoyed at the instructor as to actually stop what I was doing and fast forward through. The instructor is too out there for me...Telling me to imagine squatting in a forest to give birth while I'm squatting on the mat? Asking me to chant her name? I enjoy connecting with my body and baby but this is just too over-the-top. I can't believe this was ever marketed to the mainstream - even the editing is bad. The primal dance scene is pretty funny, though.

1 out of 5 stars non-functioning dvd.......2007-05-12

This DVD didn't play, either in my DVD player, or my computer. Returning it was a hassle, and I was still charged for shipping. These DVDs should really be tested at the factory, or wherever they are burned, to make sure they function properly!

5 out of 5 stars Great workout and guided meditation!.......2007-04-23

Wow, I would really recommend this dvd to all pregnant women. Don't let the other reviewers scare you away when they talk about the "New Ageness" of the workout and the (gasp!) primal dancing. It's yoga, for crying out loud, not jazzercise! I loved all of the exercises, and I'd especially recommend it for women that intend to give birth naturally.

As for getting into the spiritual aspect of it -- I'm not exactly spiritual in my daily life, but it's nice to go along for the ride when the yoga instructor tells you that God is in control. I just translate it to mean that I can trust my body to know what to do, and that I'm not in charge, and my big brain isn't going to be much help during labor. I hope that moms-to-be will consider being open to the possibility that this dvd will be good for them, and for their babies, too!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Effective; Simply Excellent.......2006-11-10

I absolutely have feelings of gratitude for this prenatal yoga workout. It seems the exercises designed in this tape are mysteriously targeted towards easing the exact pains I'm experiencing as a pregnant woman.

I have been a yoga instructor for several years and stopped teaching after becoming pregnant. I was feeling so nauseous and suffering from such tightness in my legs that I could not maintain my traditional rigorous workout. Seeking a good tape, I found this to be excellent.

Granted, this workout would be quite dull for an un-pregnant woman; but my pregnant body seems to respond so well to the exercises, particularly stiffness in the joints and low back pain.

As for New Age, I generally like that type of teaching (more or less depending on my mood at the time) but I am really digging it during pregnancy. I like the talk of "nature" and allowing your body to embrace its natural rhythm. During this uncertain time in life where your body and mind are doing things you have no control over, it feels good to calm down and simply embrace that natural method which allows you to be who you are.

1 out of 5 stars Too "out there" fpr me.......2006-10-17

I did not even make it through this tape, as the instructor began the New-Age-speak right away. I am interested in relaxation and execution, not locating my "third eye". If you are like me, skip it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Workout with Resistance Bands.......2006-11-02

This is a very good resistance bands workout routine which has 25 different exercises with the 3 resistance bands that came with the dvd.

I needed to lose weight and firm up in a safe, fast and healthy way at home, and I am glad that I got this dvd with these O bands which are specifically made for these exercises which gives me a full body fun exercise routine.

The small flat band is used for lower body and leg extension exercises, tricep pull down. The other 2 longs bands are used for many different upper & lower body exercises and I like it that I do not have to waste time on machines and changing weights to get the same results that this workout gives me.

The dvd is filmed on a beautiful beach and Sunshine dose the exercises in a very effective yet simple and plain way, first showing the exercise then starting the set.

I like it that I do not have to travel to the gym and waste time and workout on machines. I have gained strength and see firmness in my whole body, Plus I lost 8 lbs in 3 weeks using the Easy Diet & Monthly Planner that came with the DVD.

Its a Great workout routine with bands for women like me who want an easy and safe way to gain strength and firmness and lose weight. Go For it!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Gaining Strength!.......2006-06-22

When I purchased this dvd and the resistance bands, it was my goal to gradually gain strength. Using this program, I was able to do so without straining my muscles or injuring myself as I have with other things I've tried. I appreciated the approach used where beginners do a limited number of repetitions. Even with this limitation, within one week my posture had improved and I definitely felt I was gaining upper body strength. After six weeks I was the strongest I've ever been. If, like me, you have never succeeded in following an exercise program, this may be what you're looking for. At age 58, I'm finally feeling fit and strong. I do have two suggestions: 1. Write a list of the exercises to follow on days when you don't have time to go through the full dvd. 2. Take that list and your resistance bands with you when you travel. The key to success with this program is finding time to do the exercises every day. Finally, don't feel discouraged if it takes you a few days to learn to use the bands and to follow the directions on the dvd. Your efforts will pay off!

5 out of 5 stars I like this resistance bands fun workout ........2006-06-12

I like the simple way these bands exercises are made. Sunshine first demonstrates them and then she dose the exercise together. It took me a few times to get used to placing the bands in the chest exercise and now I go easily thru the entire workout smoothly.

I feel that I have become stronger because at first I could not open the bands fully and now its becoming easier, and I do all the exercises without any problems.
I also like the way this dvd is done in a very basic and simple way on a nice sunny beach. It feels like Sunshine is training me personally.

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2006-06-03

The exercises on this DVD were "fun" once I finished getting set up for each exercise! First, there is no instruction prior to each exercise on how to place the bands properly. The transition between each exercise happens so fast (Sunshine suddenly appears in the next frame in a different position and is starting the next exercise) that even now that I'm used to the changes, I still need to pause the DVD, set up the bands, then press play again...very inconvenient and irritating. It would have been better if she had made the transition from exercise-to-exercise along with the viewer so that they could be ready to start at the same time. Sunshine is also using different bands than those that are provided with the DVD...mine were rolling all over the place and slipping off my shoulders during the arm exercises. I don't know if hers made any difference in that respect but they don't seem to be slipping.
Other than that, it is a good, long workout. I own many exercise DVD's and this DVD really could have been great if not for the above problems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent bands exercise Dvd!.......2006-05-18

I got the combination of this Funcercise DVD with the resistance bands and the Fun Circuit training DVD in the beginning of march this year after giving birth, and I am very happy that I got this combination, I use them to alternate my workout routine and I dont get bored.

The Funcercise resistance bands exercise DVD has about 25 different exercises with the resistance bands that Sunshine first demonstrates and then dose the exercise, making it easy to follow. The DVD is nicely done in a very simple basic manner with exercises starting for the upper body and moving to the lower body and abdominal exercises, giving me a full complete workout in 30 minutes.

I am fully satisfied with the results, I have lost nearly 3 dress sizes and 15 Lbs in just 6 weeks since I started exercising with both these DVD's and using the Progress chart with the 1200 calorie diet in the first 2 weeks. After that I started using the Free interactive menu planner in the Funcercise web site, which allows me to chose the foods that I like to eat, like this I do not feel hungry and that that I'm dieting.
These are 2 good fitness DVD's that I recommend to all who want to lose weight and get firm and fit. Highly recomended.

This consists of meditations for relaxation and stress reduction, visualizations for cleansing, restoring and protecting the physical body and luminous energy field that surrounds it, mudras (sacred gestures) designed to depict the flow of subtle energy through the luminous field, and exercises to enhance visionary capacity and align women with the most powerful and profound feminine role model - the Great Goddess. 4 out of 5 stars Calming, empowering femine energy guided meditation/visualization w/hand mudras.......2007-07-04

This is an hour and 12 min dvd by Sharron Rose including a 7 min introduction is very beautiful. It's set on a simple spot for Sharron to sit on a low artistic chair? with many rich dark reds through orange fabrics draped on the walls & beautiful Tibetan, Indian, etc. religious statues & art beside her on the floor with plants & pillows.
The chapters include: intro, cleansing the luminous body, igniting the inner fire, awakening the serpent power, opening the heart, healing the luminous body. There are also trailers of other dvds such as artmind, secrets of alchemy, healing the luminous body - the way of the shaman, sound yoga, nada yoga, etc.
Sharron has a wonderful, soft, soothing, but strong voice. She is very expressive throughout. The music is played softly & is very soothing & matches with her pace & voice.
This dvd is about visualization, meditation, empowering yourself & simple hand movements you can do standing or sitting like Sharron. The hands follow her story telling. Moving your hands like water, making look like a lotus flower, winding them up in front of the body how the energy moves like a serpent up the spine, etc. There is no other movement necessary.
From having a bad day & my energy being off, I enjoyed hearing her voice, but didn't feel the hand movements did anything for me the first 3 min. I even thought them silly & unneeded. I did other things while still listening since I didn't want to actually stop the dvd.
After a while I felt like sitting & really enjoying her beautiful chosen words & voice & relaxing in a chair. Within minutes, more relaxed & more centered, I wanted to give the hand movements another try. I enjoyed them more & felt them feel more intuitive. After 1 movement, my intuition instantly hinted at moving them a certain way & seconds later, that's how Sharron moved them.
I was able to enjoy this for only a brief minute before I was interrupted. After that conversation, my energy again was frazzled & since it was late, I gave up trying to relax with her for the night.
This dvd is great to relax to when you are ready & have time to. Don't do it when there's a good chance of being interrupted or you are short on time the first time you try this.

Sharron has her own site under her name SharronRose to get more information, though no pictures or video of this dvd, but you can see a photo of her.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent yogic training for women and men.......2006-11-25

I purchased this DVD as a gift for my girlfriend and I must say that it has not only been of great benefit to her but has helped me to understand the many facets of women in a new and meaningful way. Contained in this DVD are subtle teachings that speak to the heart and help to align both women and men with the true nature of women that is far different than the one projected by modern commercialism and the media.

I have been a student of yoga for many years. I was extremely pleased to discover that this DVD offers teachings and meditations in an ancient system of feminine based Shakti/Tantric (transformational)yoga that has been handed down from teacher to student for thousands of years. I had heard about these powerful secret feminine teachings but this is the first time that I have encountered them. They have been wonderful for our relationship and I highly recommend them to anyone who is seeking to gain insight into the many mysteries of women.

1 out of 5 stars A Clear Deception.......2006-08-09

I have received this DVD together with Steve Murray, Reiki Master Attunement. While the latter was a disappointment, this present DVD is almost an insult. After an introduction about the power of visualization, you get to see a woman sitting on a chair in a kind of boudoir doing serpent-like sensual movements with her hands, while she seems to invoke a Goddess. I frankly expected more from this DVD. And from what the presenter repeatedly mentions about 'feminine energy', it now seems to me that this DVD may be addressed to women only. I have never in my life known that this kind of exercise could be called Yoga. I frankly feel deceived by this product.

Description

Extraordinarily empowering and heartbreakingly funny, the Sundance favorite V-DAY: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS chronicles how Eve Ensler's hit Broadway solo show The Vagina Monologues grew into V-Day, an international grassroots movement to stop violence against women and girls. The first of its kind, The Vagina Monologues has been widely recognized as "a celebration of women's sexuality and a condemnation of its violation" (The New York Times) and praised as "frank, humorous and moving" (Chicago Tribune). Over eight hundred cities around the world have participated in V-Day by staging benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues. From locales as diverse as New York, the Phillippines and Kenya, director Abby Epstein's UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS features emotionally charged interviews and readings by everyday and celebrity women (including Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda and LisaGay Hamilton), all of whom courageously reveal their intimate experiences and bond together to break the silence that surrounds abuse. More than just a group testimonial, UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS is a moving celebration of community awareness that leaves us with the hope that change can happen. DVD Features: Deleted Scenes/Locations; V-Day Spotlight Campaigns; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Subject matter excellent -- presentation, eh!.......2007-02-18

I love Eve Ensler and most of what she does, but I did not find this to be well put together. I still would keep it in my library, but I was somewhat disappoionted in the presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Vday-Until the Violence Stops.......2007-01-09

As an elderly victim-survivor-celebrant of incest, date rape and third generation of domestic violence, I speak of personal knowledge of what assistance can accomplish. This is the most inspiring of all the V-Day publications. Viewing the struggles world-wide of abused women AND the successful efforts to renew and empower them ~ is worth ten times the price of this. I have shared it with ten women (so far) who knew nothing of Eve Ensler. It has become my mission. I am proud to own and share this publication and DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and movie video.......2006-04-20

A must see for any fan of the Vagina Monologues. After seeing this documentary, I brought it to my VM cast and shared it with my co-performers. This video not only brings violence against women into a powerful light, but it also brings a fuller perspective to the impact of activism, especially the Vagina Monologues. This DVD is better than the original television broadcast with special updates about some of the global VDay beneficiaries.
An astounding show which will bring you to tears, bring you momentous joys, and will challenge you to be a part of the action to help come together as we end violence.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at what women can do..........2006-03-21

This documentary was a spectacular example of what ordinary women can do when they unite and are determined to change the world around them. I also applaud the women in the film with their candor and honesty. When I showed this film, many of the responses I got were amazed that famous women had experienced abuse. I think it is great for "ordinary" women to discover that even "famous" women have their obstacles and struggles.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing documentary .......2004-12-14

Whether you have seen The Vagina Monologues in person or not, this documentary covers the global impact of these performances as a way to increase awareness about, and encourage active solutions to, men's violence against women. The film follows the growth of The Vagina Monologues in 5 communities all over the world (the U.S., the Philippines, and Kenya). This is a powerful film--you will be changed after watching it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars better with "jazz".......2007-01-09

good surf, good waves, beautiful surfers on the nose but....turn off the volume and watch this video whith another soundtrack 'cause the dvd's soundtrack is terrible. R. Lehrer & P.Katz use the same music in every movie they made. try with jazz. However this is an amazing surf movie.

5 out of 5 stars Girls Rip.......2006-08-16

I would highly reccomend this DvD to both men and women alike. It is able to capture the growing wave of enthusiasm, spirit, and energy in women's longboarding and surfing in general. It brings together some of the most talented women in the sport, with interviews in which each one shows their support and interest for their fellow surfer. One comes to understand that beyond the competition and drive to be the best, these women are friends before anything, and this is evident both in the water and to those who feel drawn to be a part of this "new era." The footage is of extremely high quality, with a beautiful section of waves captured on film from particular popular breaks. The music has been carefully selected, and compliments each scene perfectly. Unlike some other surf videos, you won't want to skip through sections and chapters, rather, you will want to sit and watch Girls Rip from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars very well done.......2006-07-28

I would highly recomment Girls Rip. Great photography plus interviews that help you get to know these talented women a little better. The music complements the whole feel of the movie which is very positive and for lack of a better expression, user friendly. It's also got me repumped about noseriding. These girls are smooothe...definitely worth the
price of admission

5 out of 5 stars Britlyn Coleman.......2006-03-11

Girls Rip is definitely one of my new favorite longboard movies. It's filmed and narrated in a whole new way thats super fun to watch. It has some of the most talented women longboarders to date and some pretty good wipe outs. Not only does it let you watch the girls style and surfing, but you hear from other girls about the certian surfer, so you get to know them a little more. I love this movie and i highly recommend it to anyone and everyone in and out if the surfing community!!

5 out of 5 stars Girls sure do rip! :-).......2006-02-17

Girls Rip is a great movie for not only the growing women longboard population, but for anyone who enjoys watching pure talent and grace coming from some of the best women longboarders in the world. With footage from all over California and some of the most famous surf spots around the world, Girls Rip shows the growing sport of women's surfing in a new way with progressive and classic longboarding. With clips of more famous surfers showed along with up and coming girls, the movie shows current surfing and the future of the sport. I would definitely recommend it to not only surfers, but anyone who likes a great movie with great music and great stars.

Los Angeles yoga guru Gurmukh Khalsa guides 15 new moms and their babies through 30 minutes of yoga stretches and poses, a joyful two-minute baby dance, a brief bout of baby yoga, and about 10 minutes of rest and visualization in this post-baby installment of "The Method" series of exercise tapes. The white-turbaned instructor starts with a brief talk about childbirth, yogic breathing, and a recommendation to "reclaim" one's navel. Viewers join her at the live taping of a class in a large room with Greek columns, roses, and a chamber quintet. Since it's not edited, babies cry and fuss. This adds a realistic element of chaos to the tape, which the more traditional voice-over instruction ignores. Khalsa specializes in the Kundalini method, and in this tape she concentrates on slow stretches with a lot of abdominal work. The infants are included in some, as when the women roll back and forth with babies on their bellies or do "mama pushups" over the little ones. But once they are old enough to crawl, these exercises get difficult--as one baby repeatedly demonstrates. The infants are also incorporated in a cobra/triangle series, a set of Kegels, and are even used as weights. Then it's their turn with some baby stretches of their own. Finally, the moms are invited to lie down with their offspring for the rest and relaxation finale--although, predictably, some babies do neither. The 50-minute tape provides plenty of good ideas for moms who want to do yoga with their babies--or even on their own. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars sloppy yoga, messy video.......2007-03-29

I shouldn't complain, since this was a gift, but as someone with some yoga knowledge, and years of exercise class experience, I thought this was a mess. (I am less concerned about the vague spirituality of the instructor, since that can be ignored by those who are not interested, and it is not the main point.) The concept of recording a real class is interesting, but the editing made it hard to follow. The moms were doing all sorts of things, since their babies needed attention, so it's often not clear what to do - the camera would be on someone not following the exercises and attending to her baby when a new exercise began. The instructor's counting is loopy. It's never clear how many will be done, and the repetitions are done at different speeds, sometimes impossibly slow, sometimes impossibly fast. Never focused on form, as we should. There was very little about it that was yoga, and I was just stunned that the instructor would refer to "downward dog" as "triangle pose," a very different pose. Mostly, I think this is sloppy, with a few good exercises, but there's got to be something better out there, for moms and babies both.

1 out of 5 stars Too much eastern religion; too little work out........2006-03-28

The instructor looks like a Hindu priestess. She begins the workout by having everyone chant to their inner being. I had to fast forward through alot. The exercises are good, but there are too few of them.

4 out of 5 stars baby loves it!.......2005-10-29

I love doing this workout with my baby. I have the Giam postnatal workout and I only ever get 1/3 of the way through it before my baby wakes up and wants me to do anything but yoga. With this video, I can do it while he's awake and he doesn't fuss one bit! The first part of the workout has the baby lying on the floor in front of you while you do the workout. My baby loves looking at the other babies and seems to like the instructor's voice as well. it's the only thing he ever pays attention to on the TV. He also absoutely loves the part of the workout that involves him as a weight (his first giggles were while doing this video) and I get a great workout by using him as a weight. The workout is kind of short, but I think my baby might lose interest if it wasn't. I love the chanting and visualization too. It is like being in a real yoga class, not just some baby arobics. Don't get this video if you don't like yoga (and therefore the chanting.) My only complaint is that there could be more traditional yoga poses. This workout is very much about strengthening with repetitions of crunches, squats, and leg lifts, not really the relaxing sort of strength-building yoga.

1 out of 5 stars Not Great Yoga.......2005-08-10

I am sure if you just want a pregnancy or post natal workout that these are fine. I personally LOVE my yoga practice and found these videos deffinitely wanting. They have some nice qualities but really I was unhappy. I prefer Gaiam's videos.

5 out of 5 stars Great workout for two!.......2005-03-17

I was desperately seeking a workout that would involve my son; I work full time, so our time together is too precious for me to invest in a fitness routine that doesn't include him.

I was hesitant to purchase this DVD after reading the negative reviews berating the workout as being too "new age-y" -- but I'm so very glad that I did! My son and I both absolutely love the workout. It's tough enough for you to work up a good sweat (particularly if you have a big baby like I do), but it's also fun and great bonding time for you and baby.

Like many others, I found the chanting a bit over-the-top when I started the workout, but now I've participated a few times and have found it's actually quite relaxing and focusing. My advice would be to give it a shot before dismissing it out of hand.

My son enjoys watching the other babies on the TV, and absolutely loves the resistance exercises where he gets to go for some great rides while Mommy builds her upper and lower body and core strength. He adores the baby yoga, and several of the stretching exercises for Mommy engage baby as well.

If you're looking for a workout that will challenge you while also involving your baby, try this workout. It's a huge hit in our house!

Description

"One is not born, but rather becomes a woman."

Simone De Beauvoir's exquisite pronouncement on the social construction of gender in her Second Sex (1949) spoke to generations of women, and of a universal truth beyond countries and cultures. As an example of astonishing visual poignancy, "The Day I became a Woman" is the globally celebrated debut of Marziyeh Meshkini, a young Iranian filmmaker bringing her rich and diversified national cinema to bear on an enduring global concern, in a new crescendo of memorable subtlety and grace. "The Day" is repeated in three consecutive episodes-the memorial registers of childhood, adolescence, and old age-when three stages of "becoming" a woman is culturally manufactured and socially registered. Between Simone De Beauvoir and Marziyeh Meshkini, generations of women (and men), from all cultures around the world, will have much to learn and even more to achieve.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A very overrated film.......2007-03-27

Much has been made of Iranian cinema over the last few years not least because Samira Makhmalbaf became the darling of the Guardian newspapers arts pages though just because it's given good press does not mean that it is any good.

Take this film for example, 3 short stories one good, the other average the third not just poor but asking more questions from the director than it seems the director cares to answer.

In the first a young girl reaches 'adulthood' (in the eyes of the rural area of Iran that she comes from) and is required to wear the full veil as her adult female relatives are required to to (it would seem) more by tradition than anything else. The young girl however, manages to wrangle a few more hours of childhood and goes to play with her friend, a young boy who (for some reason thats not quite clear from the film) is locked away in school (looks more like a prison) They share sweets together and generally act like children until the time arrives and she is taken off to don the veil.

The second story is of a cycle race where (it seems) only women participate (again it's never made clear why this race is taking place) One young woman it seems is married and her husband and family are not too keen on the idea of her participating in a cycle race. They endlessly turn un on the journey (on horseback) to demand she returns to her husband. During the race the entire family seem to have a go at bringing her back including the village Imam (an elderly chap who seems to like riding a horse bare chested!) They all fail to convince her and finally the scene ends with her bundled off the race in the distance by it would seem her family.

Now I understand that the race may be symbolic but come on, is that not a little patronising to both Iran and Iranian women? Cycling along to freedom only to be bundled off the road by bare chested, horse riding Mullahs!

The third story is even more bizzare. It begins with an elderly woman arriving at a costal town by plane to be met by numerous street children asking her if they want her to carry her luggage (interesting in that most of the street children in Iran seem to be black, a point that the director fails to either challenge or even recognise) She has never had various material posessions and now, having come into money decides to buy them and set them up on a beach.

So what does she do? She dispatches these little black children off to bring fridges, sofas and God knows what else for her to sit about and make up for lost time. Again I am sure many of us in the west will be too buisy wringing our hands about the plight of this poor woman who has been denied so much in life will totally ignore these virtual child slaves who are running around to her beck and call. No callenge is made to this, no comment, no mention of the fact that most of them are black (apart from a few dubious comments from the old lady herself) No, all that is ignored.

If you wish to watch an interesting observation of women in Iran then watch the Circle, a film that both asks questions and challenges. If you want a film for a spot of hand wringing about those terrible people over there then this is the film for you.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a one-of-a-kind film.......2005-07-19

I hope that the viewers of "The Day I Became a Woman" enjoy as much as I did its captivating subtleties and the remarkably intelligent way in which it poses necessary and important questions that concern all human beings; questions of self-actualization, the overcoming of fear, and the experience of drastic change in a given moment. This film asks us to look deeper than popular, taken-for-granted understandings of concepts like dominance and submission, self and other, man and woman. It effectively forces us to question myth and memory and to challenge what we have been led to interpret as the condition of women in Islamic societies.

Director Marziyeh Meshkini has done a superb job of neutralizing myths and stereotypes, introducing her audience to three different women of three different generations, each experiencing the same "problem": each of their lives changed forever on the days they became women. Meshkini's story is told in three parts: in the first, we meet a young girl on her ninth birthday who is told by her mother and grandmother that she can, after a certain point in that day, no longer play with her male friend because she has become a woman, subject to the same restrictions as her mother, grandmother, and all other females she will encounter in her lifetime. In the second vignette, we are introduced to a young woman riding her bicycle with all her strength, away from her husband. The force she expends riding from something she knows she can never fully escape is amazing, and to watch it breathtaking. While attempting to run from her designated "place" pre-determined for her by society, she experiences an act of pure will that cannot be categorized as mere defiance of a norm or dominant mode of thought. This norm or mode is somehow not necessary for her will to exist.

In the third and final section we meet an old woman who, for the first time in her life, is able to purchase the things she has always wanted but has never been able to buy. Meshkini uses particularly subtle and fascinating technique in this vignette, and her audience is able to see that the distinction between what we have come to know as "apparent" or "obvious" and "fantasy" is blurred.

I am especially pleased that this film is being released on DVD with lots of special features. I went and found the website for the film ([...]) and noticed that it comes with an essay by Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, and with an audiocomentary by Richard Pena. This DVD is definitely worth a look if you are looking to watch a unique and highly intelligent examination of the condition of womanhood, not just in Iran but throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Film About Real Women.......2005-07-09

The Day I Became A Woman is a beautifully told story about growing, maturing and aging as a woman in a traditional society. Showing life altering moments in the lives of three woman at different age, this movie encompasses a very large spectrum of psychological and social aspects of being a woman, not only in Iran but anywhere in the world. The symbols, which the director has masterfully chosen, allow any woman to relate to the condition, the desires and fears of the three heroines, regardless of the cultural, educational or religious background. Finally, a real film for real woman: artistic, provocative, educational and very, very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A Universal Work.......2005-06-17

This wonderful film by an Iranian woman is not "just for women" It is tug-o-war between indomitable human spirit & cultural or personal boundaries from which none of us is free. There are 3 related stories: (1)A girl's last day as a child to play with a (boy)friend of her choice & to live in the moment (2)A womens bicycle race where they seek both pride & escape (to their men this amounts to theft) (3)An old lady who inherits money runs out and buys things, however now she has no one. All these stories blessed by the gorgeous Persian Gulf seacoast.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Film with Immediate Messages on Women.......2002-04-03

Since the 1990s, we have been given more oppotunities to watch Iranian films, and another masterpiece came here. This time, however, the film handles with a more immediate issue in Iran with a very subtle touch (and you may remember that the director Marzieh Meshkini is the wife to the acclaimed Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf ("Kandahar" and "The Cyclist").

"The Day I Became a Woman" consists of three short stories that cover three generations of women. Each part is, as always with Iranian films, based on allegorical meanings, so if you're used to the idea of traditional storytelling, you must stop using that concept for a while. But don't worry, because her method here is more accesible to aundience outside Iran than other works made there. Just try to find what the film really wants to say.

The first story follows a girl who meets her 9 year-old birthday. That means, in the traditional view, that she becomes a grown-up woman, and henceforth she belongs to domestic sphere her mother and grandmother are in. No longer she is allowed to play with boys, but the girl contends that as she was born at noon she still has time, and she is finally given short time to meet her best friend (a boy), who is ironically grounded in his room to do his homework. The way she spends the last moment of her childhood is depicted with slow but poetic images.

The second follows a married woman who takes part in a bicycle race. But her husband threatens her to stop, then her family, the village's chief, and so on. But in spite of these interruption, she keeps on going, never thinking of stopping for them, even facing her divorce. From what she rides, or runs? To where she runs? These questions are never directly replied, but instead, with a dynanic images of rushing bicycles (all driven women) the film keeps on running breathless, leading us to its shattering ending.

The third one, most humorous and poignant, portrays an old lady, who comes to a shopping center to buy things for her house. As she has inherited money, she can buy anything she wants -- a fridge, clearner, television, tea-pot, you name it. One irony is that she cannot remember one thing that she really wanted, and that is the crucial point of the film. Spreading all she bought on the beach, she tried to remember in vain while the children play with them. The answer is again indirectly shown, implied by the past her story suggests, but I should not reveal that part. Find it for yourself.

Shot with lyricism, and infused with urgent messages about today's women's status in Iran (and probably anywhere else), "The Day I Became a Woman," short as it is, offers more chance than any other film these days, to think about those issues we all should be conscious of. But before that, let me say the film is a great success with its poetic visuals with simple fable-like quality. Shot in Kish Island on the Pertian Gulf, this film is a must for any film buff with a discerning eye. And it shows a glimpse of life on this beautiful island, a famous resort place, where, perhaps to your surprise, you will encounter unexpectedly a huge shopping center that looks like those you see in LA, Tokyo and London.
