Product Description
Ladd Ehlinger Jr.s feature length animated adaptation of Edwin Abbott's 1884 "Flatland." Screenwriter: Tom Whalen. Composer: Mark Slater.
With penetrating satire, Flatland the Film takes us on a mind-expanding dimensional journey through an animated adaptation of Abbot's 19th century novel.
A Square, Attorney-at-Law, inhabits a world that is flat and two-dimensional. Together with his wife Frau A Square, he tries to raise his children -5 pentagons and A Hexagon- as best he can in a rigid society governed by tyrannical triangles and pompous priest circles.
It is three days until the much anticipated year 3000 in the Southern Republic of Flatland and A Square has a job to do. He must meet with his latest client, A Line, the first female Flatlander to be arrested for the taboo practice of Chromatism - the act of coloring ones sides in order to resemble a higher class of geometrical figure.
During this meeting an entire rebellion of Chromatists is launched, and A Square must shield his family from the horrors of urban Flatlander war.
Within this turmoil, a mysterious visitor from the third dimension arrives: A Sphere, CEO of Messiah, Inc. Flatlanders, according to A Sphere, must learn that there is another dimension called height. A Square must spread the word as his Apostle of the Three Dimensions.
But having been flat his entire life, A Square is unable to comprehend these three dimensions. Out of desperation, A Sphere pulls A Square out of Flatland altogether to show him the true nature of Spaceland, and the universe.
And in so doing, he risks the very fabric of space-time itself, potentially destroying all of creation.
Will A Square make it home to Flatland? Will he be able to understand the Third Dimension? Will he be able to spread the gospel of the Third Dimension to his fellow Flatlanders - or will he be executed for blasphemy?
The answers to these questions and more are to be found in Flatland the Film!
Customer Reviews:
A Great Experience.......2007-06-30
The first surprise from this movie was receiving it in the mail less than three days after I ordered it. The packaging was quite familiar, because it looked very much like what I had done when I sold software I created on CDs. Unless you (the guy selling the CDs/DVDs) do a run of several thousand disks and cases, you'll never get the look of a shrinkwrapped DVD like you buy at WalMart. But, if you pay close attention to all the pieces and assembling them just right, and as Ladd Ehlinger Jr, sign the disk and include a nice signed note, you can make it into something of a keepsake. The Miami Vice DVD will get handed off to the first person who asks for it and quickly forgotten. Flatland the Film isn't walking out of my house without help from a 4D sphere.
The next surprise... I've only watched it once, and expect to watch it many times and catch more of the nuances and details... At the start it seems to flip between animation and full screen text almost epileptically (for lack of a better word), like an old style silent film, except without the silence. If you go in expecting a faithful film portrayal of Abbott's book, the printed narrative looks like it might be the device to provide that, until it hilariously breaks into modern colloquialisms. Those sucked me into this film.
My Dad gave me Abbott's book to read when I was in 4th or 5th grade. I remember reading it with a very literal mathematical focus, which was probably to have lost everything intended by the book! It's kind of like how in high school, I "read" To Kill a Mockingbird (actually the first and last 3 pages), then BS'd my way to an A on a "book report". 15 years later, a friend from the UK sent me a copy of the book for my birthday, which I actually read, absorbed, and loved. Walking in others' shoes (to use the Mockingbird parlance) is the common thread. I reconnected with Flatland one afternoon when I was in grad school, and appreciated that there was so much more to the book than I'd seen as a 10 or 11 year old.
I can sort of see the same dynamic working with this film and kids. If you turn the sound down, there are lots of interesting things to watch, like the way the Flatlanders face each other to talk, their innards, how death works. I could see a bunch of 6 year olds cutting out little shapes and playing Flatland on a kitchen table, mimicking things they see in this movie. Maybe even picking up A Square and letting him look down on Flatland, with the Flatlanders oblivious to his presence. And yet, the movie is chock full of little nuggets for more sophisticated viewers to discover. I will probably have to watch it 10 times to catch all the funny signs in Spaceland. Some of the quips are very quick, like the explanation that "circles" in Flatland are not true circles, but polygons with so many sides they approximate them. Basically, King Circle and his ilk were posers.
Most definitely an enjoyable film, a fun experience, something I will share with friends and family in the future.
A Po-Mo Classic.......2007-06-22
This is a not-to-be-missed. Aside from the McLuhanesque implications of this independent REALLY film/animation, it is simply too fine! TWeaks your brain while being F-U-N. Beautifully rendered. Gulliver's travels meets Alice meets 2001 (whether you saw it as 2001 Stoned, 2001 Tripping or, GULP, a walk down Mem lane.
This film is to animation-imagination what MYST was/is to "computer games."
Bravo!.......2007-06-06
Mr. Abbott's book has fascinated me ever since my 7th Grade math teacher handed it to me in 1958. I've even used its concept in a couple of sermon illustrations (I'm a Lutheran pastor). In making this film, I think Mr. Ehlinger has done a marvelous job in not only preserving the concept, but also teaching it well and using it as an integral part of his plot. Absolutely fantastic.
A rretro 2001 victorian modern morality tale.......2007-06-05
1. I don't do reviews.
But having seen (and own 2 copies of) FLATLAND, and having interviewed the director for my cable access show: "Anatomically Correct Shorts" and viewed it at the "New Haven Underground Film Festival" (with a live audience) I felt obligated to make some sort of positive comment.
As ground breaking as 2001 this animated oddity is the WIZARDS of this new millenium. A cutting edge, wild trip in a sort of eastern european animation tradition this film is not what most American audiences are used to, in the age of super slick contentless Disni-mation. Clicker generation/shallow/ short attention span damaged slo mo's aint gonna get this film. REal film lovers/ afficionato's/ cult filmers/ and true indies will find this film something very new but oddly retro (and I mean that in the best way) amazingly complex and simple at the same time. I say check it out. Buy a copy. Support independent film.
Extraordinary!.......2007-06-04
This brings the Abbot's _Flatland_ to life. While not in 1:1 correspondence with the book, it does a reasonably good job of driving home the tendency to seek certainty in dogma and to exclude evidence to the contrary. It's interesting to note that Abbot imagined this intolerance as the root of war. Recent years have demonstrated a similar connection in the United States.
Some of the movie seems a little forced, a tad awkward. But it's well worth owning, well worth watching, and definitely worth learning from.

This zany, eye-popping, knee-slapping landmark in combining animation with live-action ingeniously makes that uneasy combination itself (and the history of Hollywood) its subject. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is based on classic L.A. private-eye movies (and, specifically, Chinatown), with detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) investigating a case involving adultery, blackmail, murder, and a fiendish plot to replace Los Angeles's once-famous Red Car public transportation system with the automobiles and freeways that would later make it the nation's smog capital. Of course, his sleuthing takes him back to the place he dreads: Toontown, the ghetto for cartoons that abuts Hollywood and that was the site of a tragic incident in Eddie's past. In addition to intermingling cartoon characters with live actors and locations, Roger Rabbit also brings together the greatest array of cartoon stars in the history of motion pictures, from a variety of studios (Disney, Warner Bros., MGM, Fleischer, Universal, and elsewhere): Betty Boop, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, Droopy Dog, and more! And, of course, there's Maroon Cartoon's greatest star, Roger Rabbit (voice by Charles Fleischer), who suspects his ultracurvaceous wife, Jessica Rabbit (voice by Kathleen Turner: "I'm not bad; I'm just drawn that way"), of infidelity. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Contact), not since the early Looney Tunes' "You Oughtta Be in Pictures" has there been anything like Roger Rabbit. --Jim Emerson
Description
It's 1947 Hollywood, and Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins), a down-on-his-luck detective, is hired to find proof that Marvin Acme, gag factory mogul and owner of Toontown, is playing hanky-panky with femme fatale Jessica Rabbit, wife of Maroon Cartoon superstar Roger Rabbit. When Acme is found murdered, all fingers point to Roger, and the sinister, power-hungry Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd) is on a mission to bring Roger to justice. Roger begs the Toon-hating Valiant to find the real evildoer and the plot thickens as Eddie uncovers scandal after scandal and realizes the very existence of Toontown is at stake! WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT is deliciously outrageous fun the whole family will enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Cool Carrots!.......2007-06-16
It's Bogey meets Bugs Bunny when 'toon-loathing detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) is the lone hope of the irascible and irritating Roger Rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer) to prove his innocence when he is accused of murder. Set in the 1940s in a shadowy world reminiscent of the noir classics, Who Framed Roger Rabbit combines Disney and Warner Brothers cartoon creations in the same scenes. Randy, red-haired Jessica Rabbit (voiced by Amy Irving and Kathleen Turner) is one of the more enduring new noir characters and as it should be, it's the diabolical dame who's believed to be the root of all evil. The DVD is loaded with featurettes, and is well worth the price. (Fans of the movie should definitely read the book, as well. Warning: it's much more adult than the film!)
Toon-riffic!.......2007-05-24
This is a DVD you should own if you enjoyed this movie that came out nearly 20 years ago! It offers you the inside story on the behind the scenes production and the animation. It was too bad they didn't make a sequel for Roger Rabbit! Bob Hoskins was wonderful in this film. Still, its good entertainment for everyone!
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE FOR SHORE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY
Can I Rate This One Higher?.......2007-04-11
Everyone knows the story. Rabbit meets girl. Rabbit loses girl. Rabbit save Toontown. Rabbit gets girl in the end. It's as old as the movies.
Wait, 'Rabbit gets girl'?! Yes, it's true, and so well done to be astonishing. Bob Hoskins is fabulous in his role, selling everything he does. And Charles Fleischer as Roger Rabbit sets a modern standard for zany. It's just a shame that Disney went cheap on us so we can't have more Roger Rabbit tales (NYUK, NYUK, pun intended). Get the dip for the fuddy-duddies that let this classic character slip through their hands. More Roger Rabbit!
I love this movie.......2007-03-08
I was so happy when they put this movie on DVD. When I was growing up this was my favorite movie. The cover is so creative and it has great special features. It brings me back to my childhood!

Geena Davis and her former husband, director Renny Harlin, attempted to pick up the pieces after the debacle of their box-office disaster, Cutthroat Island. What they came up with was this repulsive ode to American film noir, based on a script by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) about an amnesiac schoolteacher (Davis) who searches for her true identity and finds she is actually a secret agent immersed in a deadly plot to topple the government. Mechanistic in its violence, obnoxious in its attitude, the film makes Davis, a once-promising actress, nothing more than a special effect. She tosses one to sadists in the audience by allowing her character to be beaten, punched unconscious, and tortured. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, plus Dolby surround sound, theatrical trailer, cast information, optional French-language soundtrack and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic Movie........2007-06-16
This film is really one of the best action films Ive ever seen. It is truly fun to watch, even if you watch it over and over again. I was most surprised by Geena Davis. Her performance is actually very good as an action star. Her action and her acting were both done extremely well. Then theres Samuel L. Jackson. God, hes cool in this film. He has so many lines that are largely funny and not corny. Him and Geena have a good chemistry on screen that really makes the movie work. The action is pretty much non stop. Those action scenes are shot very nicely and they look awesome. This movie most certainly isnt meant to be taken seriously and is meant to have fun watching. It succeeds in doing so. Its a great little action film that will keep you entertained even if you watch it a dozen of times.
Get the popcorn and enjoy........2007-06-12
I heard that this movie tanked at the US box office and i'm not sure why because its far better than many of the "blockbusters".
I lived in Singapore and it just ran and ran there in a couple of theaters.
Renny Harlin was married to Gena Davis at the time and it all seemed a bit incestuous and it followed the record breaking disaster that was "Cutthroat Island" so I guess nobody in the "biz" wanted to go near it.
This however is a good movie. It flows well the actions scenes are great and Samuel Jackson is wonderful. I'd never heard of him but Craig Bierko makes a great villain and I cant see why he hasnt done more. Yes there are plot holes but no more than the average Tarantino movie.
I would rather sit through a rerun of of this than have to watch Spiderman 3 ever again.
About Twin Towers.......2007-04-22
I saw this movie and it held my attention from the beginning, as well. But, I was very surprised about the statement made about blowing up the Twin Towers and blaming it on the Muslims.
Does anyone remember that? It was near the middle of the movie. Interesting, because the movie was made during the mid-90's and the Towers were actually blown up and it was blamed on Muslims.
One Great Action Movie.......2007-02-11
This movie is over the top, smartly written, and perfectly made. It is Renny Harlin's masterpiece, and my favorite Samuel Jackson movie. The screenplay by Shane Black is complex and full of smart, funny dialog. The pairing of Davis and Jackson is very enjoyable, and the action scenes are some of the best ever in action movie history. Unrealistic? Yes. One of those movies you can watch over and over and never get sick of it? To me, yes. Harlin is a brilliant director when given the decent material he needs to work with; This is one of his most shining moments. Great ensemble cast, cinematography, and sounds really great loud. Love the scene w/Jackson on Larry King. That is some funny stuff. A must for every action movie fan.
Great movie--Lousy DVD transfer.......2007-01-18
I really like this movie. Geena Davis has never been cuter, and Samuel L. Jackson has never been seedier. I really enjoyed this movie in the theater and later on tape.
Then I bought the DVD. And it stinks. It is the worst DVD transfer I've ever seen. Every chapter transition pixellates during the transition. It hurts my eyes to watch it. I finally took the DVD out after 15 or 20 minutes. I've never seen a DVD do this, except for poorly-burned copies of old, scratched-up DVDs. The only redeeming factor is that I only paid $3 for it from another retailer when purchased at the same time as SOAP.
I've never seen a DVD do this. Stay away from this cheaply-made DVD.

Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Batman into a visual feast, and Burton brilliantly establishes a darkly mythic approach to Batman's legacy. Danny Elfman's now-classic score propels the action with bold, muscular verve. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Jack Nicholson is the Joker, who emerged from a horrible accident as a maniacal criminal. Michael Keaton is the Caped Crusader, who emerged from a childhood trauma to become a masked crimefighter. Kim Basinger is Vicki Vale, the talented photojournalist desired by both men. And Batman is the movie, the all-out spectacular directed by Tim Burton, set to songs by Prince and a music score by Danny Elfman, and an Academy AwardO winner* for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Anton Furst and Peter Young).

A very mixed bag that's ultimately not up to snuff.......2007-07-03
Batman is one of the most pivotal comic book characters ever. From his humble beginnings Batman was a dark and grim character, and through the years we have seen him go into a lighter image on screen with the cartoons and television shows. Its like the average person on the street never really got to know the true Batman until now. I had so much hope for this movie, but ultimately it was a let down. While the imagery, soundtrack and special effects were superb other aspects of script and production made this more than just a mixed bad. It was a mess.
Lets first talk about the good stuff like the backdrop and designs for this movie. Gotham city never looked cooler. That goes the same for batman. When you see him first appear in the shadows you definitely get the idea of what Batman was supposed to really be like. There is an interesting use of color, lighting and shadow that give the movie a very stylized and comic book feel to it. Other designs like the Batmobile, the Batcave and Batmans various gadgets are equally impressive and are definitely things I wouldnt mind having& if I knew how to use them properly. And as if to only top off the spellbinding design of the movie you get what has become one of the most grand and memorable soundtracks of any superhero show. What more could you want?
Plenty. You would think Tim Burton would do a full out grim and gritty Batman like the true fans of the character were looking for. As a matter of fact for the first 30 minutes we got that to the hilt. In that first half hour the movie is an amazing combination of all that design style as well as the perfect feeling of Batman being the ultimate crime fighter. What happens after that changes the tone of the movie into something that falls between gritty and camp. Instead of continuing the coolness and mystery of the Dark Knight you get stuff that seems more appropriate from the 60s television show& only done darker. Yeah you can say its because thats how The Joker was written. Well he was written wrong in my eyes and seems more like an aloof copout in the script-writing department. From then on the movie slips into just another Hollywood plot placating to the crowd, giving up all opportunities they had to truly stand out.
The acting is pretty good, but I cant help but think the choice of actors was strange. Keaton seemed an odd choice but he did do the part admirably. He just didnt really look the part. Jack Nicholson as The Joker& I dont think so. Instead of getting the type of Joker I know from the books and previous shows we get& well& Jack Nicholson. He might as well be calling himself Jack instead of Joker. I didnt even think Jack Palance, whom I love as an actor, fit well in this movie. Actually I cant think of any actor in this film other than * (who played Alfred the butler) and * (who played the police chief) who really fit here.
Basically this version of Batman is quite a departure from the mythos that was known before it. Tim Burton was pretty open about that, but the problem I have is its too different and ultimately didnt entertain me. If you have no previous conceptions of Batman or are open minded enough to see a very different rendition of that story then you might end up enjoying this. If you were hungrily waiting for a truly nail-biting and serious Batman movie then look at the more recent Batman Begins.
Dig that Bat mobile!.......2007-07-02
Well, I've had this tape for a couple of years and just got finished watching it half an hour ago for probably the third time. I'd have to say (because I still find it interesting) that constitutes the movie being art.
PROS:
1. Ok writing, that's a star.
2. Ok acting and at times a little better, that's a star.
3. Ok directing and that's a star.
4. Neat idea handle ok, sometimes better. That's another star.
5. Neat modeling, music (for the Batman scenes) right on target, that's a star.
CONS:
1. The truth is, I and anybody else could pick this and most movies apart and suggest changes, additions, subtractions or out and right distruction or run it up the flag pole and see who salutes. In this case it is a popcorn movie and not to be take as serious as Casablanca. Therefore I see no reason to chop or pick it apart. The only real question is, is Batman entertaining? Was it interesting enough to see a couple more times? If so, then it did its duty enough to be called art, (provided it is original).
Batman is art. It isn't on the same level as Casablanca, but what is! It's a popcorn movie and because it came out, and had such a big reception, the industry tried to make other Batman type and style movies.
My favorite scenes? Fast-forward until the girl gets into the Batmobile
and watch that thunderbolt go down the road progressively faster, and the music was perfect for that scene. I think the scene should have lasted another ten to twenty seconds longer and the Batmobile should have gotten progressively even faster. But in the beginning, when they were driving through the forest road (with all the fallen leaves) it looked as if they were only going fourty miles per hour. (I know it was only a gas powered model). By the time they hit that last stretch the Batmobile couldn't have been doing over 100. I know that's fast even for a model in scale miles per hour BUT...well, its is a jet powered car. You know a real race car at the Indie 500 start off at 200 mph just to qualify. The Batmobile is Jet powered...and it's just a model and just a movie...I wish you guys had--you know--got it up there where a bowshock pressure wave had been visible.
Oh well, so what.
I still like the movie despite a few flaws. The Joker gave a fine performance no matter what anybody says, and the other Jack played his part well--Palance always has (I hope I spelled that right). So, I give this popcorn popper a five star rating and recommend it to all of us who still haven't sold out our taste.
Bye!
Batman VS. Batman Begins.......2007-06-20
The other reviews contained here seem to divide into preferring Burton's original "Batman" vs the new "Batman Begins". I have some thoughts on this.
First, let me say I much prefer Burton's film. I find it's baroque theatricality far more interesting and entertaining than "Begins" attempt to shoehorn Bruce Wayne/Batman into something like the real world. It always seemed to me the approach on "Batman" was to ask "what kind of world could have created these people?". "Begins" approach is to ask "what would these people be like in the real world?". I suspect that the "Begins" franchise may run into significant problems as it tries to reconcile some of Batman's more exotic villains into that reality.
Despite having no super powers, Batman is a mythic character. He doesn't belong in everyday reality. None of Burton's films are set in reality. Like myths and fairy-tales, they exist in a parallel reality that informs our own.
The last point I'll include here is the CHARACTER of Batman himself (not the actors or their performances: they're both excellent).
By the end of "Begins" he has pretty much overcome his childhood traumas (bats & loss of parents) and the decision to become/remain Batman is a conscious, rational choice. (What a swell guy.)
That's OK, but not nearly as interesting as what they did in "Batman". In Burton's films he is almost like a drug addict. There is no altruism here. He MUST be Batman to deal with his inner demons. Repression creates perversion and 'Batman' is what has oozed out of the cracks in Bruce Wayne's psyche. Anyone who has to create as elaborate a coping mechanism as Batman must be really screwed up. Wayne must be Batman or go mad. Perhaps he has done both. Burton's version of Batman may be less "real" but it is far more human.
Oh, yeah. Also- Danny Elfman's score rocks and the Batmobile in "Begins" sucks!
Fairly awful rendition of Batman.......2007-06-01
Tim Burton's "Batman" is celebrated as a classic and the best Batman movie... mostly by people who saw it sometime in the past and can't remember it. The movie doesn't hold up today. For trying to craft a realistic Batman, much of the movie makes no sense.
Batman, who is supposed to be an agile fighter and a fearsome force is too stiff, getting repeatedly shot (conveniently into his body armor), gets beat up by regular thugs, has his plane shot down by a handgun and for the most part, can hardly seem to move in his suit. And since when did Batman unapologetically kill without remorse?
Nicholson's Joker is just as bad. Nicholson, in typical fashion, takes over the movie with his larger than life ego, and plays a Joker that wants to be funny and often lacks motivation. In one scene, the Joker randomly hosts a street parade and hands out money while Prince plays in the background. How very faithful Burton is to the comics.
Kim Basinger's character spends one night with Bruce Wayne and instantly falls in love with him, even though their relationship is never fleshed out while Alfred proclaims her to be "special." So the all secretive Bruce Wayne is willing to give up his secret identity to a woman he has known for a few hours?
The movie just doesn't make sense. The action scenes are terrible, Batman has no motivation and is impotent in many scenes, Nicholson was a terrible casting choice and jumps in logic are standard. Check out Batman Begins instead.
The film that began the modern "superhero" genre.......2007-04-30
This film holds a special place in my heart. It's really the film that got me into comic books and solidified Batman as my all-time favorite superhero. That being said I realized it was probably over a decade since I last watched this film. I've pretty much every line of this film memorized since I watched it so much as a kid, but whenever I talked about the film with friends it was always through those rose-colored glasses of nostalgia. After watching this new 2-disc DVD and the recent film Batma Begins I have to say Batman Begins is indeed a better film--but only slightly. Burton's Batman set a stylized reality for Batman on film, but Nolan's version gave Batman something Burton's lacked: plausibility. Now, some people may say plausibility has no business in a superhero film, but I disagree. I think the more realistic you can make the characters and their problems the more the audience will be able to connect with them and the story.
What Burton's films lack in plausibility it makes up for in style. There are a few points in the film that don't hold up so well to the trained filmgoer's eye, honed on years of sophisticated CGI pampering since this films initial release in 1989. In case you forgot, BATMAN used all models and at least two scenes use obvious (and inexplicably unnecessary) cell animation. The Acme Chemical plant and Joker's chopper are the two most obvious and cheesy models used in the film, but the rest are gorgeous and nearly seamless. Plus the Batmobile scenes are breathtaking. The 1989 Batmobile has to be one of the coolest cars ever designed.
And let's not forget performances. I absolutely love, love, love Jack Nicholson's Joker. It's classic. A lot of reviewers criticized it as over the top and hammy, but that's exactly what the Joker is! Keaton doesn't say much, but he doesn't have to: his eyes say it all. And Bassinger as Vicki Vale is just the right amount of scared and confused.
The DVD extras on this new 2 disc edition are the best of all the Btaman DVDs I've seen. We get a new 3-part in-depth documentary with new interviews from all the key players (except for Keaton--they just use footage from an older interview) plus other great featurettes including one on the making of the Batmobile. An Tim Burton who usually gives yawn inspiring commentaries manages to be insightful and informative with his Batman commentary.

A nightclub act with a handsome singer and an anarchic monkey-boy became a potent box-office force in the early 1950s. Although their wild live antics never translated intact to the screen, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were an instant movie hit; they had two films in the box-office top ten of 1951, and another two in the top ten of 1952. Paramount repays this effort with its Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection, Volume One, which gathers most of their early efforts at the studio.
Martin and Lewis were introduced in 1949's My Friend Irma, a big-screen version of a popular radio show. The boys are in support, but their high jinks were the hit of the movie, and their portion of screen time ballooned in My Friend Irma Goes West, which they basically take over. Both movies are enjoyable comedies, and especially in the sequel Lewis's lunatic style of mugging, vocal calisthenics, and physical shtick makes him look like an animal uncaged.
Not included in this set is their first starring vehicle, At War with the Army. The next six consecutive films are here, beginning with one of their best, 1951's That's My Boy. Jerry plays the athletically hopeless son of a famous football hero (Eddie Mayehoff, a funny man). It's a measure of how much Lewis had grabbed the public's imagination that Dino doesn't show up until the film is 20 minutes old. (Lewis later wrote that he arranged for "That's Amore" to be included in The Caddy to bolster Martin's popularity.) Also from 1951, Sailor Beware is a service comedy with some hilarious sequences--Lewis conducting a male chorus, for instance, or undergoing a slightly surreal medical exam--and the team still has a freshness despite the movie formula. Their timing together in the punchdrunk-boxer routine shows some of the chemistry they must have had onstage.
Jumping Jacks (1952) is the least of Martin & Lewis's service comedies, with Lewis as a showbiz performer who pretends to be in the military as a favor to Dean. The Stooge, same year, is one of their best teamings, this time with a touch of pathos along with the laughs: Martin is a self-centered singer who can't acknowledge that his hired stooge is the reason his act is boffo. Along with the backstage stuff, the movie demonstrates how skilled Lewis's singing was, even in a comic purpose.
1953's Scared Stiff is a warmed-over remake of the Bob Hope comedy The Ghost Breakers, and shows that the boys were overworked; the story is lame and the clowning feels more desperate (although Lewis has a few moments imitating co-star Carmen Miranda). In The Caddy, from the same year, Martin indulges his real-life passion for golf, and Lewis plays the neglected caddy. It's a return to form, borrowing a Stooge vibe, and boasts an odd framing story with the boys playing a nightclub act very much like Martin & Lewis.
Unless you're already a fan, your enthusiasm for this set will depend on your tolerance for Jerry Lewis and his manic, childlike dementia. Either you'll laugh, resist, or become fascinated at the naked, look-at-me neediness of his act. Dean Martin can be appreciated for the difficult job of playing straight man to this craziness (notice, too, how his singing voice comes into its own, from imitation Bing Crosby in the first couple of pictures to the familiar, relaxed style of vintage Dino). The DVD set provides no supporting features, but this is the first chapter of a hugely profitable and popular showbiz phenomenon. Just one more thing: "Who's your little whoozis? Who's your toitle dove?" --Robert Horton

Sailor Beware.......2007-07-04
Sailor Beware is one of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Funnies movies. But it is very importantly funny to me because my father was one of the sailors in this movie when it was filmed in San Diego Navy. My father was in boot camp at the time. In fact in the seen where they are doing there exercise my father is about the 5th or 6th person behind Dean Martin. We laugh allot about this seen because my father hesitates in going down in one or more of his exercises. My father served 4 years in the Korean War. But this movie is the only thing we talk about. A great movie.
A must have for all Martin and Lewis fans!.......2007-07-01
I am thankful that Paramount took the time to present this collection of the funniest works by the comedy team of Martin and Lewis. Personal favorite...Sailor Beware! I hope that we will be able to see Money From Home and Three Ring Circus real soon on DVD. You will laugh for hours with the works of the crooner and the clown...Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis! Enjoy!

Amazon.com essential video
Created by Steven Bochco and one of television's most influential series, Hill Street Blues was not your father's cop show. The Emmy-winning pilot episode, "Hill Street Station," immediately established the series as less a police procedural than an up-close and personal "interface with the police experience." To establish gritty, documentary-like realism, the show featured sequences, such as the pre-credit roll call, that were filmed with a hand-held camera. There was chaotic, overlapping dialogue. There were sudden, shocking bursts of violence that claimed popular characters. Story lines were not wrapped up at the end of the hour, but instead, unfolded serially throughout the season. It's no wonder that Hill Street, while championed by most critics, was initially not embraced by viewers. It was, in the beginning, one of television's lowest rated shows, its case not helped by NBC's criminal practice of juggling it in its primetime schedule). But there is justice in Hollywood. Hill Street Blues won the Emmy for best drama in its first season. Also honored were several members of the ensemble, including Daniel J. Travanti as the compassionate and incorruptible Precinct Capt. Frank Furillo, Michael Conrad as the avuncular Sgt. Phil Esterhaus (whose cautionary, "Let's be careful out there," became the show's pop culture signature), and Barbara Babcock as the wildly sexual Grace Gardner, who rocks Esterhaus's world (particularly in the episode that earned her her statuette, "Fecund Hand Rose").
There were no big stars on Hill Street Blues (or, for that matter, no little stars, as one of the cast members jokes during a near-hour-long reunion featurette included as a bonus feature on this three double-sided disc set). Each was an indelible character, among them Charles Haid as cowboy cop Andy Renko, Veronica Hammel as sexy public defender Joyce Davenport, Bruce Weitz as the untamed, animalistic Belker, Keil Martin as LaRue, whose descent into alcoholism is one of the season's most compelling dramatic arcs, and James Sikking as the gung-ho Howard Hunter. Once daring, Hill Street Blues seems almost quaint today, with none of the graphic sex or language that scandalized NYPD Blue (in one episode, a captured cat burglar, portrayed by a pre-L.A. Law Michael Tucker, makes a reference to "wolf pee-pee"). The ethnic portrayals, too, are not exactly nuanced. But the human dramas at the heart of Hill Street still make for arresting television. --Donald Liebenson
Description
"LET'S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE." So ends each roll call session at the Hill Street station house. As the cops and detectives head out to the streets, Captain Frank Furillo begins the delicate balancing act of providing enough protection for the law-abiding citizens without inciting the neighborhood gangs and local criminal elements who are openly hostile towards any police presence. Yet as dangerous as his inner city precinct can be, Furillo's biggest battles often involve protecting his own cops from the Public Defender's office, self-serving bureaucrats, and even each other.

My Number One TV Series.......2007-05-07
May I say that I wish that those who list the actors at Amazon, stop listing cast names alphabetically, but list them in starring roles. For example the name Daniel J Traventi should appear FIRST in any listing related to the great Hill Street Blues. Frank Furillo was the captain of the the Hill Street Station, and any company wanting to train staff in leadership skills etc should include episodes of Hill Strrett Blues as compulsory viewing. Furillo was a wonderful leader and human being.
Next was Michael Conrad who played Sgt Phil Esterhaus who left the series in Series three (I think) when the actor was too ill (cancer) to work any longer. His parting warning to his team "Now let's be careful out there," was always the last thing he said to those heading out on patrol at the beginning of every episode.
Was there anyone in Television more stunning than Veronica Hamel ? Does anyone remember she was living with another Hill Street actor Taurean Blaque (Det Neil Washington) at that time ?
Another item of note about Hill Street - how much class the African American officers displayed, and what wonderful roles were written for them. Officer Bobby Hill (Michael Warren) who had to deal with his partner, the complaining Renko (Charles Haid) and teach him to grow up, whilst Det Washington (Taurean Blaque) had the lyin' La Rue alias John JD LaRue (Kiel Martin) to constantly cover for, as his partner womanized and drank to excess, and went awol from jobs.
Other characters/actors of note in this series were James B Sikking as Lt Howard Hunter, the military misfit, and Joe Spano as the gentle Henry Goldblume the real right hand man to Furillo.
I love this series as much today as I did back then and agree with those many on here who say the quality of the transfer to DVD and general packaging could have been a lot better.
However, after waiting so long for the series to appear on DVD we will just have to put up with what we're given.
Question : How long before Series Three ? It's been a couple of years already.
A Great Show That Has Held Up.......2007-04-02
I was not born in 1981 when this show originally aired. My parents talked about it and I heard it referred to in relation to other shows I like so I decided to see what the hype was about. For once the hype was right, this is a really good show. It can even pull in a first time watcher when it is about 26 years out of date. The reason this show holds up so well is that the characters are so interesting. I am currently watching season 2 and hope the rest of the series will be released on DVD so I can get caught up. I'd think it make for a good family tv night (with teenage or up children) during the summer hiatus. A great show for people who love tv and great characters. Good even if its the first time around.
Hill Street Blues Season 1.......2007-03-08
I received Season 2 for Christmas and just had to secure Season 1. I am very pleased with the production. It includes some of the true classics and you see the character development take place in a well organized manner. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys police drama. My only regret is that the follow-on seaons are not available. Great series.
A Blast from the Past.......2007-02-01
I remember watching this show when I was a kid -- I didn't remember that the characters argued so much and shout at one another at every opportunity; fortunately this seems to happen only in the pilot. The show takes on a nice pace by the time you get to the third or fourth episode. Good show if you like the superior NYPD Blue series (same producer).
as good as I remembered.......2007-01-25
Normally, nostaligia interferes, clouding memory, so returning to an old favorite leaves me with little more than a bad taste in my mouth. 'How could I have liked this?' I often ask myself.
Fortunately, this show is a powerful counter example. It's well-acted by a superb cast. The emphasis is on character actors exploring roles with real dimension to them. The plots are driven primarily by the reasonable frustration of policing the roughest part of a city.
As a side note, this show reminds me of life in the 1980's - not the "Miami Vice" version, but the downtrodden Reagan years of high inflation and low wages. It's not a pretty picture, but it's an honest picture. The change in affluence over the past 20 years is really stunning - I'm not talking about the poor, but rather the very middle-class police officers, struggling to make ends meet.
Later police dramas (NYPD Blue in particular, given the connection between the show) followed the same formula, with slightly different twists, more raw language, and partial nudity. Still, Hill Street Blues stands out as an excellent example of what a police drama can be.
However, I fear that this review has so far missed the mark. It's a TV show, and the primary question is, "Is it entertaining?". For me, that's a definite "YES". I can watch one or two episodes in a sitting, absorbing both the atmosphere and the action, and enjoy myself, looking forward to more. I tend not to buy TV shows, as I can't see watching them, and there are always others to rent, but I'm glad I own this one, and look forward to getting the rest of the seasons.
(As an aside, people often ask where this takes place - it's never spelled out, although there are hints that it's Chicago. However, it could take place reasonably in any large midwestern city.)

Despite critical acclaim, Hill Street Blues could not get arrested ratings-wise its first season. Far from being careful out there, the superb second season did nothing to tinker with the integrity of this groundbreaking series to make it more audience friendly. Multiple storylines, overlapping dialogue, gritty language, and a pseudo-documentary style capture the palpable chaos and tension of what one character calls "the rat-infested, poverty-stricken urban reality." From the precinct-house shooting rampage that opens the season to a hijacked hearse in the season-ending episode, Hill Street Blues deftly walks the line between police procedural and personal drama, further fleshing out its gallery of compelling and colorful characters. Belker (Bruce Weitz) is still a growling mad dog who takes bites out of perps. But in one of the series' most memorable story arcs, he forms a surprising bond with the delusional costumed citizen Captain Freedom (Dennis Dugan), Public defender Joyce (Victoria Hamel)'s steamroller persona breaks down when a colleague is murdered and the case is thrown out because of a technicality.
Other dramatic developments: LaRue (Keil Martin) falls off the wagon and endangers his partner, Washington (Taurean Blacque), during a drug bust ("Zen and the Art of Law Enforcement"); Goldblume (Joe Spano) gets personally involved in the case of an abusive slumlord ("Of Mouse and Man," featuring future Miami Vice star Edward James Olmos as a threatened tenant); Esterhaus (Michael Conrad) is still bedeviled by sexual siren Grace Gardner (Barbara Babcock); and Precinct Capt. Frank Furillo (Daniel J. Travanti, who earned his second Emmy for Best Actor) and Joyce bring their clandestine affair out into the open. Other ongoing storylines involve realistic depictions of police corruption and inter-partner race relations. Hill Street's second season fulfilled the promise of its auspicious first, and repeated as TV's Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmy Awards. No roll call of classic, trendsetting TV series would be complete without it. --Donald Liebenson
Description
Created by Steven Bochco (?Murder One,? ?NYPD Blue?) and Michael Kozoll, and featuring an ensemble cast including Daniel J. Travanti, Veronica Hamel, Bruce Weitz, Charles Haid, Betty Thomas and James Sikking, each episode chronicled a day-in-the-life of the cops on the beat, starting with the infamous morning roll call and ending with a recap of the day?s events. The first hard-hitting series of its kind, ?Hill Street Blues? garnered 26 Emmy® Awards ? including four for Outstanding Drama ? won two Golden Globes®, and is credited with inspiring beloved dramas such as ?St. Elsewhere,? ?Law & Order? and ?NYPD Blue.?

A suggestion to Fox. RELEASE SEASON 3 NOW!!!!.......2007-07-03
The only reason I can see for Fox to drag their feet in releasing Season 3 is that Season 1 sold great and Season 2's sales fell way below the studio's expectations based on Season 1's sales. Having said this, if this is the case, I would hope that Fox would consider continuing to release seasons of this show and just manufacture far fewer units so that at least the true blue fans of the show can get it in it's entirety. I know Fox did this with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, so they can do it with Hill Street Blues as well.
Memories.......2007-06-27
Brings back a lot of memories. You just can't catch reruns of this show on TV...
Please, Say It Isn't So.......2007-06-23
Hill Street Blues wasn't just a great police drama, it was one of the greatest, most ground-breaking drama series of all-time. The scripts, the characters, the acting; everything about this show was first rate and absolutely memorable. Shows like this just don't come around often enough on television.
I was amazed at how long it took the studio to finally release Season One of this fantastic series and snatched it up immediately. I then eagerly awaited the release of Season Two, which I also purchased immediately. However, it has been over a year since Season Two was released. Please tell me they are going to release the remaining seasons of this fantastic series!!! I'm afraid that sales of Season Two fell short of expectations and that the studio has decided not to release any more seasons. Please say it isn't so!!!
where's season 3?.......2007-06-17
Please, please release season 3 and the other seasons of Hill Street Blues. The first two season were excellent and I want more!
Other fans, please click on my review as helpful so the powers that be can see we want more HSB.

One of the best series never made.
All is great in this show : characters (except Davenport), actors, stories, musics...
I don't see better until now.
Please, I want all others seasons !!!!!!

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1958 direct-to-screen follow-up to their My Fair Lady was--miraculously--every bit as memorable as that stage smash. Set in fin-de-siècle Paris and based on a Colette story, Gigi also is about a girl (Leslie Caron) on a lower rung of society who blossoms into Cinderellahood before our eyes and ears. Thank heaven for Hermione Gingold and Maurice Chevalier as her mentors, and Louis Jourdan as her prince. The screenplay writer and lyricist Lerner always said that Gigi's title song was his favorite of all he'd written, and it's easy to see why--"Gigi" is a transcendent anthem to being transformed by love from an unexpected source. The entire score, including "Say a Prayer" (which had been cut from My Fair Lady), "I Remember It Well," "The Night They Invented Champagne," and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," comprise a sparkling, rare soundtrack recording that stands alone and can be enjoyed and understood by those who have not yet seen the movie, deprived souls that they are. The winner of nine Academy Awards (plus a special Oscar for Chevalier), including Best Picture, Gigi was the last great MGM movie musical and one of the best. --Robert Windeler

I feel at just a little bit of a disadvantage here..........2007-07-04
...as I've never read Colette's book. :( But I _have_ seen the 1948 French movie that led to this 1958 musical. :) Using that as a base for comparison, and comparing it to all the other big-production, big-ticket 1940's and 1950's musicals I've seen on VHS and DVD over the past decade, I can still safely say that this is one of my all-time favorites. The costumes, music, production numbers, and especially the performances (Leslie Caron herself, Eva Gabor, Isabel Jeans, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan) are all first-class. As some other reviewers have noted, I'll also say that the fact that Caron, Chevalier and Jourdan are all French folks adds to the charm and the realism, if you will, of this movie (using the term "realism" advisedly when talking about a movie musical :D ). I understand that Audrey Hepburn wanted this part but was turned down because she was "too old" (in 1958?) I don't agree with that particular reasoning, but I don't think the Anglo-Dutch Hepburn, as much as I love her, would have brought quite the same air to the production that Leslie Caron did to what became her signature role.
As the rather overused saying goes, they just don't make 'em like this anymore.
ahh.. for the love of french!.......2007-06-17
I just love this little movie. Funny and so French. Audre Hepburn (sp?) wanted this roll but she was too old to play the part. The older gentleman that is in this movie later played the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast...you know... be our guest, be our guest... to our service to the test! My daughter loved to laugh at the young girl getting tipsey on the wine her Aunt is serving along with the quality time being spent playing cards and poking fun at each other.
As bubbly as champagne- delightful!.......2007-05-19
"Gigi" is a delightful film. When I was in my teens and would watch the film based on Colette's novella about a family of courtesans, I did not quite understand the meaning of it all. It was fun to watch Leslie Caron sing and dance around Paris, flirt with Louis Jourdan, and then get dressed up and go to Maxim's. I thought it all so romantic. Later, in my thirties, the sordid aspects of the story struck me. It had never occurred to me that they were grooming the young heroine, Gigi, to be a "kept woman." The French, being the French, do not mind immorality, for the most part, as long as it is elegant. The Bourbon Kings of France before the Revolution, with the notable exceptions of Louis XIII and Louis XVI, had mistresses who lived in splendor; the scandal was widespread, countered only by the piety of the queens and princesses. The practice of keeping a mistress spread to the wealthy bourgeoisie. The story by Colette, while it is fiction, indubitably had many historical counterparts.
Gigi, however, sees through the glamor to the ugly reality. When Gaston invites her to become his mistress by saying: "I want to take care of you, beautifully," Gigi knows that it means that she will sleep with him until he tires of her, and then move on to "another gentleman's bed." Because she truly loves Gaston, and is not after his money like everyone else in the story, she recoils from the arrangement. In the end, Gaston, realizing that because he and Gigi truly love each other, he can not expose her to lifestyle of the demi-monde. She must become his wife, or nothing. Ultimately, the lively and nonconformist girl he fell in love with inspires him to rise above his boring and dissipated existence.
Delightful, beautifully done musical.......2007-05-07
Gigi!!!What a delight. Leslie Caron is beautiful, Louis Jourdan is wonderful, Maurice Chevalier charming and so so French and Hermione Gingold is a Gem. This is what musicals should be and are missed as they are not being made today. If you want a delightful experience and feel wonderful after seeing it, see Gigi and more than once. A delightful experience and beautiful to behold!!
Thank Heaven for Little Girls.......2007-04-11
This is a fun musical that is worth rewatching. Apologies to readers as with out comparing to the book this film is first rate. And for those viewers that poses large high definition devices it is also fun to watch the background from clouds to furniture.
The year 1900. The place Paris. The story of the coming of age of a little girl, Gigi (Leslie Caron.) And the coming of age of those (Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, and Hermione Gingold) interested in Gigi's coming of age. Mixed throughout in the appropriate places are relevant songs and visual filters.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli who is well known for Brigadoon (1954), and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970). Original music by Frederick Loewe Camelot (1967) (music: "I Wonder What The King Is Doing Tonight"), and Brigadoon (1966) (TV) (music: "I'll Go Home With Bonnie Jean").

As far as ice-skating movies go (or those that prominently feature the cold-bladed sport), this romantic movie is one of the best, thanks to utterly charming performances by underrated actors D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. The couple play, respectively, a washed-up hockey player and a prima-donna skater who end up in doubles figure skating together at the Winter Olympics. Of course, the mismatched pair fall in love. In between, there's a lot of verbal sparring, talk of toe picks, and surprisingly skillful directing by Paul Michael Glaser (Kazaam, The Air Up There). Direction here is critical--unlike in Flashdance, where the dancing was done in the shadows, face and feet obviously shot separately--and
The Cutting Edge credibly highlights the actors and their professional stand-ins. This is such a fun, sweet story that the facts the film takes liberties with--including the alacrity with which a hockey player takes to Olympic-level figure skating--are easily forgivable. --N.F. Mendoza
Description
Moira Kelly (Dangerous Beauty, "The West Wing") and D. B. Sweeney (Roommates, Memphis Belle) star as polar opposites who unite on the ice for a shot at Olympic gold in this inspirational romantic comedy from acclaimed director Paul M. Glaser (The Running Man). Brimming with wit, charm and plenty of breathtaking sports action, The Cutting Edge is a real winner!
She's a rich and refined pairs figure skater whose prima donna attitude has her skating solo. He's a brash, blue-collar hockey champion with a new injury and no future. With nothing in common but their dream of reaching the Olympics, Kate and Doug are each other's last resort. Reluctantly, they join forces, but its not long before the barbs - and sparks - start flying as the unlikely pair skate towards the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance at a medal...and a chance at love.

B-Grade Everything.......2007-06-17
This is one of those films you find yourself laughing at--not because it's got good humor in it, but because of all the things it does wrong. The script is corny, the acting poor, and the story line trite and uninvolving. They don't even show any extended figure skating scenes, which would have at least added a nice note as that is always fun to watch.
The dialogue between the two leads is supposed to be snappy, but with the wooden way they deliver it, it's just dopey (I'm surprised these two actors ever worked again after this film came out...) The two skaters bicker non-stop through the whole movie and then are supposed to fall in love at the end, though I didn't buy it for a minute. They are both unlikeable, as characters and as actors, so I didn't care what happened to them in the end...unless they would have fallen through the ice, which would have ended this dull ice skating movie on the proper note.
Magnifico!.......2007-05-17
English has words for most emotions, but sometimes Italian is more effective. I saw this movie for the first time seventeen years after it came out, and I found it exactly "Magnifico".
Ice-skating has always represented in my immaginary one of the forms of "gracefullness" that can be acheived in competitive sports. Another is surely gymnastics.
This very well written movie deals with a beautiful and fascinating sport, but also adds to this advantage a story of failures, dreams, efforts and "Great Expectations" (Kate gives Doug this book for Christmas). The plot somewhat resembles "The Taming of the Shrew", with a femine character that is whitty, sassy and tempremental and a male character that steadily somehow tames her. However, we don't live in Skakespeare's times anymore, so the parity of sexes must be respected, with also the man giving in at last to love.
Nothing is more romantic than the meeting of disparities, and this is exactly what happens here.
A pretty, talented, rich, spoiled and introverse young figure skater, Kate Mosely, finds herself without a partner. Thanks to the long eye of her Russian trainer, she has the occasion of trying out the retired hockey player Doug Dorsey, that slightly intimidated by the girl and the situation, but at the same time desiring to skate again and compete decides to pair up with her in the attempt to qualify for the Olympic games.
One of the points of force of this movie is the dialogue between the couple which is fast, humoristic and a pleasure to follow. Another is the evident attraction between the actors which goes right to the heart.
The scenography is also very good, with the winter scenes that add magic to the atmosphere and the training scenes with the skaters alone on the rink.
Obviously some of the sport scenes are impossible, as skaters have rightly pointed out, and the plot resolves as expected, but I believe this movie can be classified as a romantic classic and will stand the test of time.
The best romantic comedy drama of the 90's!.......2007-04-12
People may say that My Best Friends Wedding was the best romantic comedy of the 90's, but I have to say that this one is my all-time favorite! Julia Roberts is great and banked a lot of bucks for the movie studios, however The Cutting Edge proves you don't need big-name stars for a film to excel on all levels. You can read what this film is about already, I just wanted to say that if you have overlooked this or if it is not in your collection already, you are missing out! 5 stars!
The Cutting Edge - Gold Medal Edition.......2007-02-24
The fil is good and interesting, you can enjoy and pass the time
Cutting Edge.......2007-01-29
Definately one of the best skating/love stories ever. It's humerous and both actors play their parts so well.
