This film was funny and very different. Wonderful to see Maggie Smith and Michael Cain together with James Spader equally matching them in the acting department. A plesant enough way to spend a spare hour or so.

A Fun and Funny love story. Caine & Smith are fabulous as always. Recalls the Topper movie and TV series. It's great seeing James Spader in a comedic role again.

5 out of 5 stars Reverent, Riveting, Full of Love.......2006-10-01

When I saw and heard this music broadcast Veteran's Day on TBN and my friends serving in our Armed Forces in Iraq saw it broadcast on Armed Forces Network, I was so happy to find the stereo CD and companion Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound DVD on Amazon. I cannot stop watching it! The 60 minute musical program, reminiscent of the great concept albums of years ago, is one of the most reverent, intelligent and passionate portrayals of America's character ever produced and put on video. It contains many styles of choral music - all superbly performed by the world famous Cadet Glee Club of West Point arrayed in breathtaking formation on the altar of the massive 100 year old Cadet Chapel. Four cameras and 11 microphones capture all action. Archival video footage and pictures from WWII through the Iraq War are interspersed throughout the program honoring the memory of our soldiers past and present.

There are richly textured vocal a capella songs such as "Rise Up O Men of God", "Manisons of the Lord", one of the most popular new hymns written, and "America (My Country `Tis of Thee)". Your buttons will burst with pride when you hear the brand new song "Men of Freedom" introduced by a single Cadet then followed by a cascade of additional voices building to a unified and thunderous declaration of defiant freedom in a style reminiscent of the great Welsh Male Choirs. Four songs highlight the power and majesty of the largest church organ in the world. The 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound will shake your house with its majesty. You'll have to fight the urge to stand at attention when you hear and feel its power kick in on "Lest We Forget", "On Great Lone Hills", "Jerusalem" and "This Christmastide". The musical variety is further enhanced by the addition of brass and percussion for the rousing marches, "The Longest Day" and "Non Nobis". When was the last time you heard these two songs - one by world famous singer, songwriter and teen idol, Paul Anka and the other a medieval celebration of thanksgiving sung in Latin! In addition, "The Longest Day" tells the story of D-Day with historical accuracy and genuine video footage and photos taken on the beaches that day. "Non Nobis" is performed to the backdrop of the traditional brigade march of the Corps of Cadets upon the historic Plain of the US Military Academy - a very rare sight, indeed!

The rich background vocals of the Cadet Glee Club musically frame two songs that underpin the message of this album - Bravery and Sacrifice. "Into the Fire" by NYPD's Daniel Rodriguez made me want to immediately rise up and rush to anyone's aid and when he holds that note at the end - wow! Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga's performance of the classic Christian hit, "Via Dolorosa", (one of the top 50 Christian songs of all time), is "The Passion of the Christ" embodied in a 5 minute song. You will alternate between tears and goose bumps. Her performance of the Spanish stanza will overwhelm you. Finally, Irish song writing master, Phil Coulter's wistful "Take Me Home" is accompanied by beautiful piano and guitar and introduced by a new poem entitled "I Am A Soldier" that is sobering reminder of the oath our soldiers swear to and the actions they are bound to take. God bless them! The sound is superb, the editing is crisp and well thought out and the coloring is gorgeous.

A great bonus of the CD and DVD is that they both include a stylish lyric booklet as well as commentary by the producer on why he chose each song.

On the back cover of the CD and DVD cases is the statement that this production was created to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, and the great values of America that they defend. This it surely does!! Also, it states that the producer is contributing a portion of his wholesale proceeds from its sale to organizations assisting our wounded soldiers. Bravo, Mr. Coppi.

James Spader looks like the hardest-working man in show business as the busy, comic-romantic lead in this enjoyable "film blanc" (a tongue-in-cheek phrase coined by film critic Andrew Sarris to describe that genre of movies featuring ghosts in love). Spader plays Stevenson Lowe, heir to a highly respected publishing firm that has recently been purchased by a giant media corporation. Though Stevenson has deluded himself into believing the new owners will allow him to maintain creative control over his family's book line, he soon discovers the unpleasant truth. A ludicrous executive (funny work by Buck Henry) is pushing no-brainer tomes about cats and the female fat cell into the spring list, pushing poor Stevenson into the margins of his own company.

His helplessness has a way of resonating with other mushy areas of his life. Having purchased an expensive townhouse for himself alone, Stevenson severely disappoints his long-suffering girlfriend (Polly Walker in a rare comic outing), who thought they were going to get married. The hero's dithering on this sore subject gets more complicated when he discovers a pair of Jazz Age ghosts (Michael Caine and Maggie Smith) occupying his new home and dispensing unwanted advice about love. Directed by Peter Yates (Breaking Away), Curtain Call has a low-key charm kept alive by the considerable skills of its admirable cast (including Sam Shepard, Marcia Gay Harden, and Frank Whaley), while a handful of memorable, screwball scenes deliver solid sight gags. Not a masterpiece, but a real treat. --Tom Keogh

Description

Get into the spirit with real romance. Stevenson Lowe's girlfriend, Julia, wants to get married. But all thoughts of proposing are quickly scared out of him by a couple of grouchy ghosts who have the marriage from hell. When Julia decides she's waited long enough for a proposal, she leaves Stevenson and his crazy ghost stories behind. Will his afterlife houseguests be able to reunite our young lovers? True love gets a spirited test in this charming, offbeat romantic comedy starring James Spader (Stargate) and Academy Award-winners Michael Caine (Hannah and Her Sisters) and Maggie Smith (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy.......2006-12-07

This film is absolutely delightful - in a nice, old-fashioned way. Which means there's a real plot with real characters. Not the norm nowadays.
The cast is a dream. Caine and Smith are simply wonderful together and Spader gives a brilliant performance as a comedian - one has to think of his later work in "Boston Legal". The supporting cast is also very good. Polly Walker seems a little pale and uninteresting, but that can be easily overlooked.
And this film is more than just a love-story (or even a ghost-story): it's a film about books. The sub-plot features the hero's struggle to run a publishing house that refuses to publish low-quality books. His reactions on some of the "best-selling" titles alone are worth watching the film.
All in all a funny, witty and romantic film - recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Curtain Calls.......2005-09-17

James Spader in a refreshing light-hearted comedy??
Without nudity and lots of sex?? Is it any good?? YES!!
I was overly pleased with Spader's antics. I had no idea he was good with anything physical above the eyebrows (graymatter). And these supporting actors are without equal. It's a sweet, fun script that flies by which you'll have to watch again - and show it to friends.

4 out of 5 stars Whimsical but well done fable !.......2004-12-22

Peter Yates `s career has had too much peaks and some lows . From his famous thriller Bullit in the far sixties to the Dresser ( his masterpiece to my mind) . His concerns have always turned around the inner dragons hidden in the intimacy of the most of the human beings .
In this time he recreates a funny situation in which New York ` s dressy guy will be haunted for two old specters in the New Year `s 1927 . Obviously he will be the one who watches them . Since the plot has many intersections with previous films , the masterful hand of Yates and this splendid cast gets to lead this film to a happy land .
Michael Caine , Maggie Smith , Marcia Gay Harden and James Spader and my dear reader as you well know I have not seen any film accepted by Mr. Caine fairly mediocre . So considering all the cards in your hand , how can you lose with this clever and easy going picture ?

3 out of 5 stars Great Cast, Mediocre Film.......2004-04-15

I wanted so much to love this film. Maggie Smith & Michael Caine together again (first time: "California Suite")was a big reason I sought this one out. The story idea is pleasasnt enough, but too often the scenes seem to just ramble on. There are bright spots, usually when Smith and Caine are around. The dialogue needed much more sparkle to make this film more memorable. A bit of better editing might have also improved the whole piece. An enjoyable, but rather disappointing experience.

4 out of 5 stars Beetlejuice it isn't but still funny in a sophisticated way.......2001-08-18

I have watched this movie many times. Michael Caine and Maggie Smith are wonderful, I wish they would do another one like the Topper series. James Spader is great also, sort of Cary Grant similar. I don't remeber Polly Walker very well, the weak link? You also get Buck Henry and Sam Shepard! The music is wonderful also, very beautiful movie. I am delighted with many small production company movies, Kill the Man was a strained comedy but at least it was a true comedy instead of some of the movies big production companies try to pass off as comedies.

NOVEMBER 20, 2003: CURTAIN CALL PRODUCTIONS RELEASES THE WORLD'S FIRST EVER 5.1 DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND DVD OF HANDEL'S "MESSIAH" PERFORMED AND RECORDED LIVE ALONG THE SEA OF GALILEE.

In the midst of a time when reconciliation seems so difficult, marvel at this event where a Jewish choir and orchestra perform a Christian masterpiece in a German Benedictine Church marking the site of Jesus Christ's miracle of feeding the 5,000.

This inspiring performance recorded on December 14, 2002 features Israel's acclaimed Upper Galilee Choir and Ranaana Symphonette Orchestra performing Handel's "MESSIAH" at Tabgha, the traditional site of Jesus Christ's miracle of feeding the five thousand along the Sea of Galilee. The concert video was produced and edited for DVD by Doug Coppi, CEO of Curtain Call Productions and filmed in the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fish. It was recorded on high resolution digital video with 5 digital cameras. The audio was recorded in 24 Bit Surround Sound utilizing state-of-the-art microphones. The various recitatives, arias and choruses were filmed from 5 vantage points within the church, which allowed dynamic and visually stunning editing that truly compliments this timeless masterpiece. 4 out of 5 stars A charming and uplifting performance........2006-01-15

I recently sang in a "Come and Sing" Messiah. For non-UK readers, this is a British thing done around Christmas and Easter time. A group of accomplished instrumentalists and soloists will join with a group of enthusiastic amateur singers of varying abilities and experience to rehearse Messiah intensively over a weekend, and sing it on the Sunday evening.

The one I sang in was at Leeds Metropolitan University with soloists from Opera North and the famous Black Dyke Mills Band. The excellent conductor, Andrew Dean, observed that it was far more important to sing the work with conviction than with meticulous accuracy. This reflected the intended spirit of Handel's masterpiece - and with regard to some inaccuracy, well, the work could take it!

How well Dean's comment sums up this charming and poignant performance by an Israeli choir of the Christian story told in Handel's reputed response to a sermon by John Wesley. True, it is clear that the soloists are amateur performers. But their voices are pleasant, and the soprano in particular has a tone that some professional singers might envy. The chorus is very good indeed and the Ranaana Symphonette is at least equal to most of the professional orchestras that I have ever heard perform the work. The highlight of the performance for me was the spontaneous clapping and cheering from the Israeli audience even before the orchestra had finished the last bars of the Hallelujah Chorus.

To sum up. If you are satisfied with nothing but professional slickness and accuracy then this is not the recording for you. However, if you want to hear a recording which I think would have warmed Handel's heart, then you might give this one a try.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired.......2004-02-10

Wow, what a great experience this live performance is! Instead of a slick, impersonal production, I was treated to something very organic and engaging. How the producers controlled the sound so expertly in that stone environment is beyond my knowledge, but it is wonderful. The 5.1 surround sound really filled my room. That combined with the video angles and close-ups really showed the inner workings of a major concert. I felt as though I was there. This is an amazing piece with a Jewish orchestra and choir singing a Christian Masterpiece in a Catholic church run by German Benedictine priests. Think about it. There's alot to consider here. Truly inspired.

5 out of 5 stars Handel's Messiah DVD.......2004-02-04

I received this version of Handel's Messiah as a Christmas present and couldn't be happier. Handel's piece is obviously brilliant. The sound track on this DVD gives the piece its rightful respect - it is fabulous. To me, the performance location at the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fish provided an intimate and informal, yet, inspirational setting for such a majestic piece. The details of the video were well thought and, in my opinion, added to the intimacy of the concert.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-02-02

It was clear from the start that this was going to be an amature performance when the 'Father' of the church instructed the audience to turn off their cell phones - why in the world would you record this in 5.1 for all to see over and over again! The musicians are of average quality and the performance seems to be home-grown. The emotional appeal (in Israel where Jesus walked) is not enough to make this DVD anything but interesting. Get the Handel Messiah w/Cleobury, Dawson, Summers, & Brandenburg Consort - they get an A+ in my book.

4 out of 5 stars Curtain Call -- What Happened Here?.......2005-06-18

With a wonderful cast, beautiful sets, obviously a lot of money spent -- why is this movie so bad? First of all, the story is really very weak. But the main problem is James Spader's immitation of what would happen if you put Jack Lemon and Woody Allen in the blender on high speed. Spader is a good and engaging actor, but his work in this movie is so far over the top that it ruins the whole thing -- for me, at least. Whether this performance was his choice or the product of the director's mis-direction, it was a mistake. Everyone in the movie is talented, accomplished and totally wasted. I don't recommend this movie, unless you like beautiful sets. I haven't seen Warm Blooded Killers, so I have no comment about that.
