Product Description
New York cab driver Korben Dallas didn't mean to be a hero, but he just picked up the kind of fare that only comes along every five thousand years: A perfect beauty, a perfect being, a perfect weapon. Now, together, they must save the world. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in acclaimed director Luc Besson's outrageous sci-fi adventure, an extravagantly styled tale of good against evil set in an unbelievable twenty-third century world.
Customer Reviews:
Great movie finally remastered.......2007-07-02
This is a really fun, fun movie. It's not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a good combination high adventure, situation comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn't make sense? Don't worry. I'll explain.
High adventure comes from the plot: save the earth from evil by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That much is obvious. Cyberpunk explains in a way the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a situation comedy? You got it. I won't get into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you find in sitcoms. This is a good thing by the way. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these elements (no pun intended) fit seamlessly.
Acting is great. Despite popular opinion of models not being very good actors the models that acted in this film did a good job of being campy in an entertaining way without hamming it up. I can go on an on about each of the reas actors and how they succeeded in pulling off whatever character, but I will digress to two ends of the spectrum. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod is priceless and worth the price of admission alone. One exception I would have to say is Tommy "Tiny" Lister as the President. Up until the final scenes his acting was pretty dry. I also have to criticize whoever decided to hype up the fact the movie has Luke Perry in it, who played Billy. Billy did nothing to carry the plot and only had a cameo role in the beginning. Ugh... Hollywood.
The movie can get too trendy. The music, though nice, didn't really fit the setting. The very last scene is totally lame and if you ask me unlikely (sorry Korby...). And there is a scene or two that was just trying too hard to be hip. I can forgive all that because the comedy, action and drama do fit in to what ends up being a mirthful romp in high flying action.
Sony dropped the ball on their first blu-ray release of The Fifth Element. The uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks blew you away, but the video quality was merely on par with regular DVD resolution. This time Sony listened to their fans and remastered the movie so that you get the full 1080p love you deserved the last time. Bought the first blu-ray? No problem. Sony seems to be offering an exchange program. Just contact Sony and they will set up a way you can pass your old blu-ray for the remastered one. Contact info is below:
Phone: (800) 860-2878
Email: consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.com
One downside though: no extras. That's right. All the cool stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is just like getting the first one they released. You get only the movie and some trivia text. If I were you I would still wait until they make some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you get the higher resolution AND the goodies.
If you want to experience a varied range of pleasant emotions without taking any one of them too seriously then you're going to love The Fifth Element. If you want high definition and special features then you better wait. I am betting this is going to be the case with most (if not all) new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs that first come out.

A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. --Robert Lane
Description
The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government's witch hunt for the alien.

Sci Fi At It's Best.......2007-05-18
This movie earned a Golden Globe and it's message still holds true today.
Campy Drama / Sci-Fi Classic.......2007-05-12
Who knew that actress Patricia Neal and good old Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea from Mayberry fame) would ever appear together, along with Michael Rennie, in this sci-fi-cult screamer of a black-and-white classic, and that we will forever remember the line: "Gort! Klaatu Barada nikto!" This item is worth having just as a peerless piece of 50's memorabilia! Get it, watch it... and Wikipedia it for little known factoids!
One of the best sci-fi movies of the 50's.......2007-04-24
If ever a film could capture the very essence of syrupy conception while making us love it with utter devotion, this is it. The story is perfectly linear in construction, the characters neat and tidy. The story unfolds before you like a clean, speckled linoleum walkway. Just put on your high-tops and stroll along, glass of milk in one hand, cookies in the other. This is the film that reminds the peacenik in us that those higher powers, you know - the guardians of intergalactic peace we just know are out there, are watching, waiting for that single telltale act of malicious intent from homo sapiens that will bring down every last heat ray of righteous fury the outer space cops can muster and "leave our world a burned out cinder."
You'll love the fact that huge diamonds are the currency on the space cops' planet, and that he carries a few million dollars worth in the pockets of his borrowed woolen suit for change. You'll especially love the fact that just three little words, constructed of strangely Germanic phonemes, when spoken to a ten-foot tall robot awakened with a boy scout's flashlight, can belay its built-in command to destroy our world. Watch in bug-eyed awe as Michael Rennie's hands play over those big `ol light bulbs that double as his flying saucer's controls, waving this way and that, as he launches the most complex shipboard functions. Gasp agog as you discover that the cop's ship is made of material so tough that it's un-scratchable, un-filable and un-blowtorchable. Watch the space cop scribble the answer to a monstrously long mathematical equation on Albert Einstein's doppelganger's chalkboard to get the pipe-smoking professor's attention. It's pure poetry I tell you.
The Day the Earth Stood Still.......2007-04-04
This is the original classic movie that everyone should see. The props and the technology of film making has advanced but the differences in our world are the same. Man only does one thing well. He finds improved ways of killing each other. In this movie, though many years old, man is faced with a dilemma. Live in harmony or be eliminated by higher intelligence. Let's face it folks, no intelligent life form would want to have anything to do with a race of people that only excell at murdering each other and their own environment! It is a great movie.
The Earth Stood Still This Movie Moves On.......2007-03-19
After so many years this movie couldn't have been written better today than it was back then. A great theme ahead of it's time with a great cast. I wish they could still make movies today like they did back then. Unfortunately most of these older movies have lost their moral meaning throughout the 60's, 70's, 80's, and whatever was the 90's. It just goes to show that just because something is new doesn't make it better. Watch this movie and you will know what I mean.

LETS MAKE BISCUITS!.......2007-07-01
This is no doubt the crown jewel of animation. I absolutely love this show and Nickelodeon sucks for not continuing the series. These cartoons are timeless and I can watch them over and over and they still make me laugh. Like many of Nick's toons, there are a lot of jokes that adults will find funny, and of course Gir is just hilarious and can make anyone laugh. As far as the DVD set, this is the complete set with all 6 discs of the series at a great price. You can buy the house box separately which comes with the special features disc not available on its own. It has some OK stuff but only necessary if you are a hardcore fan. This 6 disc set is really all you need, it's awesome and contains the entire series. Enjoy, filthy humans!
Love Invader Zim, but Strange DVD Problem with this Set.......2007-06-16
So, I love Invader Zim! I already had Volume One on DVD, but figured I should go ahead and just get this, so I could have all seasons/volumes in one nice set. My weird DVD problem is this: On all of the Volume 2 episodes I have watched thus far there is a strange movie camera with a 1/2 beside it that stays in the right upper corner of my screen. It cannot be cleared, so it seems it is part of the dvd playback, though it should not be. It is almost as if someone illegally downloaded it and did not know how to use their movie capture program correctly? I have tried viewing it in two different players, but that made no difference. It is really annoying! Has no one else had this problem? Is it a Media Blasters problem? Are they the only ones who put out Zim dvds? I am so confused and again, slightly annoyed. Hmmmmmmmmm......
Invader ZIM!!!.......2007-06-08
Absolutely perfect. The entire series for under $20, what more could you ask for. Definitely a great buy.
Great entertainement for the kids.......2007-05-31
For some reason the kids (boys 6 & 9) love this cartoon. The price was right and the content is plenty.
Time to settle this once and for all...........2007-05-23
OK....
A long time ago I wrote a review for the first IZ DVD saying [basically] that I hated it, when a long time ago before that, I loved it. Yes, very confusing, but this one review will settle my inner thoughts and opinions of this show, both good and bad, once and for all. I promise it!
Now... "Complete Invasion." All three of the IZ DVD releases ("Doom, Doom, Doom!," "Progressive Stupidity," and "Horrible Holiday Cheer") all packed into one doomy package. Yes, it's the best thing to ever happen! All episodes of the greatest cartoon ever in one boxset. C'mon, let's go to Hot Topic. The eyeliner's on me!
Okay, sarcasm mode off. This is not the greatest cartoon ever (there ISN'T a greatest cartoon ever, to tell you the truth) and not all the fans are emos. I have plenty of buddies that watch this show that don't want to slit their wrists everyday of the week. I, in fact, still watch this show. I just don't know how to describe my thoughts on it, though. It's good, but it's not great. It's bad, but it's not worse than any of today's nu-nick shows. Let me just see if I can just explain this the best way I can...
The show is, overall, good. It has great humor (none corny), amazing animation, excellent voice acting, terrific episode plots, and all the elements of a great cartoon. So this should be 5 stars, right? Wrong! There are some flaws. For one, the overall annoying scream factor of the show (there is not one episode where there ISN'T screaming in it!). Especially at a loud volume, it can really get on your nerves. Second, some of the episodes are - um - really bad. But that's only a very tiny minority (I could count on one hand the bad episodes). And third, Dib. But that one's just me!
So where am I trying to get to? I like this show, but I don't love it. I'll watch it, but I don't catch every episode that comes on. I respect the fans, really, and I'll take your flames at heart. So now that my thoughts have been cleared about this show, time to go back to the pits and drown myself in some Led Zeppelin. PEACE!

Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Investment.......2007-06-27
I love, love the Beatles, and this DVD set is awesome. I bought it as a gift for my sister, but I watch it too.
That's Entertainment!.......2007-05-22
People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!
A great bargain.......2007-05-16
This Beatles Anthology DVD set is a great bargain because when it originally came out in the mid 90's on VHS tapes it was about $120 more. I still have a catalog from then to prove it. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The best sound quality I've ever heard Beatles music presented in. Makes me wish my old Beatles CDs sounded that good. On alot of my other DVD's I have to crank the volume way up to get any decent audio. The only thing I didn't like is that during some of the songs like "Revolution" & "Hey Jude" there is talking. I'm interested in what they have to say but not during the songs. And it doesn't seem to have a feature where you can just play the music videos. But I guess it's supposed to be a documentary & not a collection of music videos. Also I seem to recall some minor scenes when I saw it on TV in 1995 that weren't on the DVD, like the reunited Beatles in the 90's admiring one of the member's fancy car.
Beatles Anthology.......2007-05-16
This was a great price for a great product. I have really enjoyed watching all the episodes and learning more about the Beatles. The interviews with each of the members help give a personal perspective to the events surrounding the Beatles' amazing popularity. A great buy!
A Must Have for Any Beatles Fan.......2007-04-23
Anthology is the history of the Beatles as told by the Beatles. It is the story of the Beatles from when they were young boys in Liverpool to when they recorded their last album, and everything in between. It is not only told through their words and interviews, but by their music, their movies and live performances, including their first concert at Shea Stadium and their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, just to name a few. Anthology also comes with a bonus disc of extras which includes the making of Anthology and the recording of the two latest Beatles singles, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Anthology is 10 hours of pure joy for anyone who likes the Beatles. Just sit back, watch, listen and enjoy!

The definitive American television series of the '90s comes to the big screen with an anticlimactic whimper. And how could it be otherwise? Why should material so perfectly realized in one medium necessarily translate well into another? The series is crisply and thoughtfully executed in just about every detail, but the heart of its appeal lies in the elegant handling of complicated and evolving ongoing story lines, which is not something movies are especially good at. The big-screen drive for closure cramps the creative style, though it may also help nonfans get a grip on the proceedings. We do get some invigorating thrills and chills, however, and a more satisfying sense of the scale of an all-enveloping human-alien conspiracy than ever before, but there's no more plot development here than in an average two-part season-ending. FBI black sheep Mulder and Scully have been temporarily transferred from the X-Files project to an anti-terrorist unit to investigate an Oklahoma City-style bombing. They uncover a new wrinkle in the Syndicate/Cancer Man conspiracy--basically an attempt to help one bunch of (benign?) aliens fight off another bunch who want to colonize Earth. A spectacular, ice-bound finale thrillingly staged by series-veteran director Rob Bowman offers Mulder (but not a conveniently unconscious Scully) his first clear look at a You Know What, which in some quarters qualifies as an epochal event. Martin Landau offers the agents some crucial clues, and several familiar TV faces (including the Lone Gunmen and Mitch Pileggi's indispensable Assistant Director Skinner) turn up briefly to wink knowingly at faithful fans. --David Chute
Description
Thirty-seven thousand years ago, a deadly secret was buried in a cave in Texas. Now the secret has been unleashed. And it's discovery may mean the end of all humanity.
"The plague to end all plagues"
When a terrorist bomb destroys a building in Dallas, Texas, FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy surpassing anything they've ever encountered. With the dubious assistance of a paranoid doctor (Academy Award -winner Martin Landau). Mulder and Scully risk their careers and their lives to hunt down a deadly virus which may be extraterrestrial in origin - and could destroy all life on earth. Their pursuit of truth pits them against the mysterious Syndicate, powerful men who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets safe, leading the agents from the cave in Texas, to the halls of the FBI, and finally to a secret installation in Antarctica which holds the greatest secret of all.

Excellent Addition to the X-Files History.......2007-06-30
The short and sweet version of this review: If you've watched X-Files and you've never seen this movie, you must! It has a great deal of extended information about various storylines from the television series. In and of itself, it is a great Sci-Fi movie and even if you aren't interested in the show itself, the movie is still a whole movie and can be enjoyed without any previous knowledge about Mulder and Scully!
love it .......2007-06-30
If you like the series then you will like the movie. Mulder is so cute! anyways there is a great Mulder/Scully scene and the movie was done after season 5 i believe and was the right time for the movie. i saw it a long time ago in theaters with my dad. i thought of it the other day and bought it through amazon....its still a classic series. if you are a fan of x-files you must own the movie. even if you didn't watch the series i think you would still like this movie. its a great sci-fi watch! mainly b/c its possible and makes you think..what if? you will never look at bees the same again.
Love the X Files!.......2007-06-12
I loved the weekly episodes of the X Files, so I wasn't disappointed with the movie. This 1998 film version of the Science Fiction series focuses on Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they try to determine why a bomb was used to cover up the true reasons the bodies of three firemen and a young boy were found in the wreckage, but they died earlier and in a different location! Dana and Fox soon find themselves tracing a deadly virus with extraterrestrial origins. When Scully is infected with the virus, Mulder races to find her after getting his hands on the antidote.
Entertaining enough, but too many open ends for the casual fan.......2007-05-25
Despite being a big sci-Fi fan, I never got into the X-Files as a kid.
Like most non-fans, I just didn't have the patience for it. The show would hint at a lot, but it seemed very little would actually happen, and instead each show would just tease us a little more.
The reason I decided to watch the movie was because I thought that the movie would probably be designed for a wider audience, have a self-contained story, and lots more excitement and special effects than the TV show.
Well, kind of. There were more explosions and the special effects were a bit more snazzy. And it was very easy to jump right into it and pick up the story without much knowledge of the TV show. But, in typical X-files fashion, it teased a lot more than it delivered, and the ending was very unsatisfying.
To be fair, I realize this was intentional on the film maker's part. And in the director's commentary, the director repeatedly bragged about leaving things vague in order to make them scarier to the imagination. But, is it just me, or does anyone else think the X-files were never all that scary to begin with?

Great movie. My son is collecting all X-file series and movies and he totally loved this movie. received the movie the very next day just as guaranteed

A wonderful Import~ Stop Bitching!.......2007-06-23
Yes, there is not a US edition of The African Queen. So be happy with what we have got in this Asian import. The picture and sound are just fine. The DVD played perfectly in my player, and turing off the subtitles were as easy as reading the instructions on the menu.
So until we get the 2 disc special editon here in the US, order this import edition. It's a must and well worth the money.
Things aren't always what they seem.......2007-06-22
Be somewhat forgiving in criticizing movie releases. It is my understanding that the copyrights for "The African Queen" is privately held which may be why it has never been released on DVD in the USA,i.e., the copyright owner has not released their rights for reproduction. Just recently "Marie Antoinette" with Norma Shearer was put to DVD and that movie, although not on par with "The African Queen" is one of my favorites. Again, the copyright may have been privately held which precluded earlier adaptation to DVD.
Also, I agree with the reviewer regarding "Widescreen". The old movies will not come out in widescreen because that is not how they were filmed.
Please release this DVD in Region 1.......2007-06-22
I just wanted to add in my support of having this DVD released in the US. There is so much crap out there on DVD - why are the classics being held back? I would buy this in a second if it were given a proper release.
African Queen.......2007-06-12
DVD was good til the last 5 minutes or so, then it started to skip. I reversed for a few minutes and restarted and this time it went all the way to the end without a problem. I will watch it again and if the problem occurs again, I will send it back for a replacement or refund.
The African Queen.......2007-06-11
Received the wrong CD Rom/DVD. Was sent The Jacksons instead of what I ordered....The African Queen.
Have not heard back from the merchant and it has been 3 weeks. Very disappointed. Will not purchase any other DVD's.

Amazon.com essential video
Hailed as the greatest film in the history of Japanese cinema, Seven Samurai is director Akira Kurosawa's undisputed masterpiece. Arguably the greatest of all jidai-gecki (or historical swordplay films), Kurosawa's classic 1954 action drama has never been surpassed in terms of sheer power of emotion, kinetic energy, and dynamic character development. The story is set during the civil unrest of 16th-century Japan, as the cowering residents of a small farming village are seeking protection against seasonal attacks by a band of marauding bandits. Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune) who is actually a peasant farmer's son, desperately seeking glory, acceptance, and revenge against those who destroyed his family. Led by the calmly strategic Kambei (Takashi Shimura, star of Kurosawa's previous classic, Ikiru), the samurai form mutual bonds of honor and respect, but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal.
Kurosawa masterfully composed his shots to emphasize these group dynamics, and Seven Samurai is a textbook study of the director's signature techniques, including extensive use of telephoto lenses to compress action, delineate character relationships, and intensify motion. While the climactic battle against raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed, Seven Samurai is most triumphant as a peerless example of character development, requiring all of its 2-hour, 37-minute running time to illuminate every essential detail of villagers and samurai alike, including an abundance of humor as Kambei's defense plan unfolds. In terms of its overall impact, Seven Samurai spawned dozens of copycat films (notably the American Western remake The Magnificent Seven) and cannot be adequately summarized by even the most comprehensive synopsis; it must be seen to be fully appreciated, and the Criterion Collection's 2006 DVD reissue is an essential addition to any definitive home-video library. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVDs
According to the accompanying booklet, "the picture has been slightly window-boxed (in correct original 1.33:1 aspect ratio) to ensure that the maximum image is visible on all monitors." The two-disc format was necessary "to maintain optimal image quality throughout the compression process," with dual-layered DVD-9's encoded "at the highest possible bit rate for the quantity of material included." The picture and sound quality are simply amazing compared to Criterion's one-disc release from 1998. The all-new, fully restored high-definition digital transfer takes full advantage of HD's clarity and crispness, resulting in picture detail far surpassing the previous DVD. This also applies to the soundtrack, presented in optional Dolby surround in addition to the remastered original mono track. The new transfer "was mastered in 2k resolution from a duplicate negative created with wetgate processing from the original fine-grain master positive" (the film's original negative is no longer available), and "several different digital hardware and software solutions were utilized for flicker, instability, dirt, scratch, and grain management."
The complete 207-minute film is accompanied by two full-length commentary tracks, including a new track combining the critical insights of film scholars David Desser, Joan Mellen, Stephen Price (author of The Warrior's Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa), Tony Rayns, and the dean of Japanese film experts, Donald Richie (author of The Films of Akira Kurosawa). Each scholar is given approximately 40 minutes of film-time, and their commentaries represent a unique opportunity to appreciate Seven Samurai from distinct yet complementary critical perspectives. The commentary by Japanese film expert Michael Jeck (from Criterion's original 1988 laserdisc release) remains useful as a thorough analysis of Seven Samurai, primarily in terms of visual composition.
The 50-minute "making of" documentary, from Japan's 2002 Toho Masterworks TV series Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create emphasizes Kurosawa's collaboration with co-screenwriters Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni, including production footage, crewmember interviews, and a reverent visit to the rural inn where Seven Samurai was written over a six-week period of intense seclusion. The two-hour "My Life in Cinema" interview with Kurosawa was recorded in 1993, with fellow filmmaker Nagisa Oshima serving as a gentle admirer, colleague, and well-informed historian of Kurosawa's career. "Seven Samurai: Origins and Influences" is a richly informative documentary that places Kurosawa's classic in both historical and cinematic context, examining its place in the jidai-gecki (swordplay) genre, its accurate depiction of samurai codes and traditions, and its stature as the prototype for many films that followed. The lavishly illustrated 58-page booklet includes eight brief essays on various aspects of Seven Samurai, each written by noted film scholars or film directors (including Arthur Penn and Sidney Lumet). Also included is a reminiscence by the great actor Toshiro Mifune, excerpted from a conversation recorded in 1993. Taken as a whole, the remastered three-disc Seven Samurai ranks as one of the finest DVD sets ever released. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
spectacular and incomparable............2007-06-30
I finally did it. I watched SEVEN SAMURAI, directed by Akira Kurosawa. The first thing that came to my mind after viewing the film was, "Why did I wait so long?" For me, I have no argument with any of the past critics (Pauline Kael, Siskel & Ebert, or the slew of consumers on Amazon). There is a reason that this magnificent film, by Kurosawa, has been given such high praise, dating all the way back to its release in 1954, when it rightfully received the Venice Film Festival Silver Lion, and was later voted One of the Top Ten Best Films of All Time in the 1992 Sight and Sound International Film Directors' Poll. Gene Siskel calls it "One of the greatest films ever made. The film that was transformed into the popular western The Magnificent Seven." [That's another film I have waited far too long to watch!]
SEVEN SAMURAI truly has something for everyone, and in its full 208 minutes of glory, the scenes fly by way too quickly. This remarkable story, based on Japanese history, depicts 16th century Japan, in the wake of a very turbulent chapter in the nation's past. Peasants and farmers are starving at the hand of ruthless bandits, who are raping and pillaging their rice fields (as well as their people). Who can save them, but a group of seven bold men [the title's samurai] leading a group of locals into battle, to take on these evil men. There are moments that are laugh out loud hilarious, followed by great dramatic and action-packed scenes (yes, this is a violent film--but, I am sure, judging from the title, that doesn't surprise you), and even some romance. The dazzling cast includes Kurosawa regular Toshiro Mifune (YOJIMBO), as well as Takashi Shimura (IKIRU).
What makes this film stand out so much (aside from the wonderful acting and engaging story) is the innovation in cinematography that was incredibly progressive for the time that it was made (the 1950s). This includes bold use of slow motion, a rapid moving camera and long-lens photography. When my mom was looking over my shoulder, ever so often, she remarked that she could have sworn that this film was shot in color. I can see why she thought that. The beautiful attention to light and shadow make you feel the color that the actors and crew must have seen, when they made this. I saw shades of gold, blue, and red (what with all the bloodshed) as I was watching this. You just have to watch the film to understand what I'm talking about. I really don't want to ruin the experience for you. I hope to see the DVD transfer of this, because I have heard it is far superior to the VHS version. That's hard to even imagine, for me, because this film sparkles on videotape! Please watch this and don't wait as long as I did to enjoy SEVEN SAMURAI for the exceptional film that it is. [As a note to all people weary of subtitles: You won't even notice them! This film will make you feel like you understand Japanese, almost. Visually, this is a film that has the power to transcend all cultural and language boundaries.]
A must see.......2007-06-27
Personally, I'm not a fan of b&w films, but this one is by far one of my favorites. Though it is long, it's well worth the time spent watching it, in my humble opinion.
The Seven Samurai.......2007-06-26
Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, Kurosawa's brutal, invigorating martial classic concerns the all-important code of honor among feudal Japan's warrior caste. Both Shimura and Kurosawa regular Mifune, playing a loudmouth rube posing as a member of the elite military class, give towering performances among a robust cast. As in John Ford's Westerns, Kurosawa carefully delineates each of his characters before unleashing the lurid battle sequences, the likes of which have yet to be equaled on-screen: the town raid, ferocious clashes on horseback, and barbaric hand-to-hand melees. Few films have even a fraction of the fluid visual power and visceral intensity of "Samurai," truly an essential work of cinema history.
Fantastic..........2007-05-29
I'm hooked on this director right now. I watched The Hidden Fortress first and decided to buy Seven Samurai after being blown away by the directing of the movie.
Seven Samurai is all it is blown up to be. The detail of character development was right on. The story was simple and yet it kept you interested and excited for the full 3+hours that it lasted. The fight scenes weren't as violent as i expected it to be, but the skills were all there. fantastic cast. I'm going to get more of this directors movies now. Red Beard has caught my eye...
3 and 1/2 hours of pleasure.......2007-05-13
This film is an acknowledged masterpiece. Kurosawa is a genius of the first magnitude. I can think of no better way to spend an afternoon than by watching it. The characters interact flawlessly and you are transferred to a land of ronin and bandits. The characters are human and their lives are interesting. You wonder what happens to the remaining three characters. You know the farmers will always be farmers.

The Fab Four from Liverpool--John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr--in their first movie. Nobody expected A Hard Day's Night to be much more than a quick exploitation of a passing musical fad, but when the film opened it immediately seduced the world--even the stuffiest critics fell over themselves in praise (highbrow Dwight Macdonald called it "not only a gay, spontaneous, inventive comedy but it is also as good cinema as I have seen for a long time"). Wisely, screenwriter Alun Owen based his script on the Beatles' actual celebrity at the time, catching them in the delirious early rush of Beatlemania: eluding rampaging fans, killing time on trains and in hotels, appearing on a TV broadcast. American director Richard Lester, influenced by the freestyle French New Wave and British Goon Show humor, whips up a delightfully upbeat circus of perpetual motion. From the opening scene of the mop tops rushing through a train station mobbed by fans, the movie rarely stops for air. Some of the songs are straightforwardly presented, but others ("Can't Buy Me Love," set to the foursome gamboling around an empty field) soar with ingenuity. Above all, the Beatles express their irresistible personalities: droll, deadpan, infectiously cheeky. Better examples of pure cinematic joy are few and far between. --Robert Horton
Description
In 1964, the Beatles had just recently exploded onto the American scene with their debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The group's first feature, the Academy Award-nominated "A Hard Day's Night," offered fans their first peek into a day in the life of the Beatles and served to establish the Fab Four on the silver screen, as well as to inspire the music video format. Songs: I'll Cry Instead, A Hard Day's Night, I Should've Known Better, Can't Buy Me Love, If I Fell, And I Love Her, I'm Happy Just to Dance with You, Ringo's Theme (This Boy), Tell Me Why, Don't Bother Me, I Wanna Be Your Man, All My Lovin', She Loves You.
Customer Reviews:
Charming film, bad DVD.......2007-07-04
Having not watched this film in about ten years, getting reacquainted with it recently was almost like discovering it for the very first time all over again. The cinematography is beautiful (the early Beatles just seem to exist in black and white; it's very hard for me to picture them in color at this point in their career), the songs are terrific, the film really brings to life just what Beatlemania was like, with those hoardes of screaming young girls chasing their idols, and in spite of not having that much of a plot, the story is carried through very well by its young stars. In spite of not having been professional actors, The Beatles just have so much charm, wit, and vibrancy in this picture, back before they became weary of so much touring and all of those screaming fans, back when it was still all new, fun, and exciting to them. They were all so young and good-looking in this film! And being from this early stage of their fame, one gets a genuine sense of them being almost like four brothers who care about one another and enjoy one another's company, a far cry from the tension and acrimony present in LIB. At times it doesn't even feel like they were using a script, but that they were just ad-libbing most of it and acting like they would have in real life, four crazy, fun, and ultimately caring good young men dealing with the pressures of fame as best they could.
However, this DVD release leaves a whole lot to be desired. Disc one has a documentary of sorts, which is nothing more than a collection of interviews from people involved in the making of the film, and disc two is entirely taken up with interviews from all sorts of people who were involved in the making of the film. While there are some genuinely nice interviewees, such as George Martin, Klaus Voorman, David Jaxon (who played the young boy), and director Richard Lester, most of them aren't from such high-profile people; indeed, some of the interviews can be rather boring, and don't give us any real new information. Who, for example, wants to see an interview with Betty Glasow, their hairdresser, over, I don't know, an interview with an actual Beatle? Some of the interviewees mention deleted scenes, but we're not even shown any of them. While they're interesting to watch once, they're not something that most fans are going to want to see over and over again. Where are actually substantial bonus features like trailers, newsreels, the making-of documentary "You Can't Do That," the aforementioned deleted scenes, photo galleries, galleries of PR material, or an audio commentary? It's inexcusable that such a wonderful and famous film gets the short end of the stick in this rereleased format. The lacking bonus features aren't the only downside, either; the film is shown in phony widescreen, with the wrong aspect ratio, and therefore portions of the picture are cropped out. And while I normally find excessive complaints about audio quality to be sheer pedantry, complaining about relatively minor things that normal people don't really notice or care about to such a huge degree, even I noticed that there was something a bit off about the sound, particularly when it came to the songs. Additionally, the front cover almost looks like the cover of a bootleg. Whatever happened to the original cover design?
This is still a fun charming film after all of these years, but it really deserved better packaging and treatment. One would be better-served searching out the original DVD release, which had better bonus features, sound, and aspect ratio, or, if one can still find it, the older CD-ROM which I feel lucky to possess, which also gives the film the respect it deserves. How is it that such a classic rock musical gets such shabby treatment while the music videos and movies put out by modern day no-talents are treated with more care and concern?
Treasure.......2007-06-29
These are "My Boys". I don't know what else to say. I loved them then and I love them now. This movie transports me back to a wonderful time when they were everything to me. I still watch it with a big smile on my face and laugh at the ease with which they toss off a "comeback" line at each other.
They look beautiful. The sound is great. The music is amazing still.
If you were ever a Beatles fan, the ownership of this film is a must.
A Hard Day's Night.......2007-06-27
I absolutely love this movie! I wasn't sure that I was going to like it before I had watched the movie. (I thought that it was going to be just another boring black and white movie.) The cover does not do the movie any justice. . . But I was hooked from the very beginning: The song "A Hard Days Night" started playing, and one of the Beatles members tripped running from a crowd of obsessed fans. From that point on, I laughed the entire time it was playing. Watching it was the reason that I fell in love with the Beatles in the first place. John, Paul, George and Ringo are such witty individuals, and I think that every person should see this movie . . . . at least twice!! I don't consider myself to be a movie critic by any means, so as far as acting abilities, plot, ect. are concerned, I would not be the best person to give a review of that nature. But I do know a good movie when I see one, and this is definitely one of them. . . .
not exactly what was expected.......2007-06-23
Perhaps my expectations for this dvd was a bit too high, but it wasn;t all that I had hoped for. I enjoyed the packaging ad certain features, but it jsut didn't seem complete.
the fab 4 are still fab!.......2007-06-13
I first saw this film in 1964, just after its release in the U.S. The comedy and music are as fresh and funny and exciting and touching today (33 years later!) as then. From a devout beatles fan.

Description
(Sci-Fi) Invasion of Astro-Monster/Godzilla vs. Monster Zero -- Aliens from Planet X borrow our monsters for a little extermination project, but they've got something else up their sleeves: world domination! Using mind-control technology, these vinyl-and-sunglasses wearing spacemen turn Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah loose in Japan, demanding Earth's surrender! It's up to American astronaut F. Glenn, his galaxy-trotting buddy Fuji, and nerdy inventor Tetsuo to break the aliens' hold on the monsters and save our planet from certain doom.

ONE MOUTH, TWO VOICES & THREE HEADS.......2007-06-09
Classic Media has to be applauded for the effort not only given to presenting the best versions of INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER possible (and they truly are some of best I've seen in a long, long while), but also the work that went into the case design. The box is striking, the artwork clever, clear, nostaligc and retro-future at all the same time. It's an attractive and eye catching design that demands (and gets) a second look. My copy has been picked up, picked over, and pick-pocketed a few times off my shelf already and throughly enjoyed.
But, having said that, I must admit that INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER is one of my least favorite GODZILLA films, yet one of my all time favorite TOHO movies. Truth be told, Godzilla here is at best a supporting player in a much larger and more complex story that could have done away with Godzilla and company and still have been just as compelling. Much like THE FIFTH ELEMENT fashion and design triumph over story and plot. This is one good looking movie. From the sets (wide open, with some of the most creative future computer and advanced table top technology), to the costumes (the aliens not only sport the expected antenna atop the head, but tight pants, trim sunglasses, and high useless collars), to the spaceships (which look exactly like spaceships should look), it's all here, and it's all a lot of fun.
It is something of a minor disappointment that Godzilla has been pushed to the margins here and used simply for effect than being the engine that drives the story. Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah do loom large on the stunning minature sets on both PLANET X and Earth, and their battles are worth the long delay between the first and the last, but it does leave you wanting more. But, this does not stop INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER being a true gem.
The prints are the best possible and the extras are well done... although the commentary by Stuart Galbraith IV, while informative, fact filled and trivia stuffed is delivered in such a slow and measured way, that it sounds and feels like he's in fear of tripping over his own words if he talks too fast. Be prepared to feel like a five year old at some points when he wants to to Understand. Clearly. What. He. Is. Saying. To. You. So. You. Had. Better. Listen. While strange, it is a trip, and you will learn a thing or two.
Classic Media has done a great service to not only the fans of Godzilla, but to all those fans still to come. These DVD releases, like King Ghidorah, manages to wear three crowns and wear them well... they are entertaining, history and art all rolled into one.
Aliens from planet X, Ghidorah, Godzilla does the jig, what more could anyone need?.......2007-06-07
I am very pleased that Classic Media have released this long desired Godzilla movie on region 1 dvd. Having seen only the Simitar Dvd release, which actually was a fairly clean print, but left a lot to be desired, not the least of which was the original Japanese language track.
Well finally it is now here for all to enjoy.
There is a lot to like here. The packaging, extra features, sound quality and of course the movie itself are all pluses for this release.
Also, the picture quality is outstanding. leaps and bounds above the older Simitar release. A very clean print, with very very few scratches or blurs. Sharp image with an appropriate amount of contrast. Color is excellent. At times it can be a bit too bright or dark, but not so much so that it detracts from the overall presentation. Considering the original elements are nearly 40 years old, it will satisfy and perhaps exceed most viewers of this genre type movie's expectations.
I wholeheartedly recommend this release and am quite sure most fans of cheesy old sci-fi will truly get a kick out of the alien storyline and low budget space effects.
As for the movie itself, Nick Adams is especially good as Glenn, and the story and production while quite "hokey" and "cheesy" is still very enjoyable. The commentary and documentary of Tomoyuki Tanaka are both worthy bonuses. The Tanaka doc is particularly interesting, especially if you are a fairly long time fan of Godzilla films. His journey from ww2 propaganda films until reaching a creative peak with Toho studios is enlightening and quite inspiring.
So, lose yourself in the cold war era threat of the aliens from Planet X, the reapperance of Ghidorah, the hamminess of Nick Adams and company, and of course that unforgettable iconic Godzilla as he dances to his heart's content. The origin of that dance by the way, is mentioned during the on film commentary.
Enjoy "Invasion of Astro Monster", now available in the U.S. for the first time in it's originally intended Japanese language incarnation.
By Any Other Name..........2007-04-08
INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER, is by any other name MONSTER ZERO, or GODZILLA VS MONSTER ZERO. INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER is the "International title" that Toho gave to KAIJU DAISENSO, released in 1965. It was then acquired for release via AIP and Henry G. Saperstein(the producer)in 1966, and he parted ways with AIP and set out for his own distribution. That didn't happen until 1970 from Maron Films, a small indie release company and it was re-titled MONSTER ZERO and double-billed in roadshow fashion with WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS and did brisk business from late summer to Fall at drive-ins and theaters at the time. The film stars Nick Adams and was released in the US, two years after his untimely and unfortunate death. Still, MONSTER ZERO/INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER remains one of the best ever of the Toho Godzilla sequels, the last one where all the major talents at Toho were in play to make a knockout film that flies along at a good clip. It has everything-alien invasion, monsters, and a love story. Interestingly, the monster side of things actually takes a back seat to a fairly engaging human story(there are only really 10 or 12 minutes of new monster footage). The FX work is perhaps Eiji Tsuburaya's best as is the score by Akira Ifukube. This version is exactly the same as MONSTER ZERO-same title sequence, however a new title card for INVASION is seen. All the dubbing was the same, and in fact the film has three minutes of footage not seen in the US version. One is the alien Controller saying something in his native language as the earth ship leaves, another is a pretty nifty FX shot looking up at Godzilla and Rodan being transported through the atmosphere by the Xian saucers, and still another shot has what appears to be an un-processed(sound) shot of Akira Takarada saying something like "I've got a bad feeling about this" in Japanese, to Nick Adams who responds in English "Talk to me about it pal". Terrific film in any language!!
About Time.......2007-04-03
This is great though I am so glad that more of the Godzilla films have been released.
GODZILLA Episode 6: GODZILLA vs. MONSTER ZERO .......2007-03-23
THIS IS ACTUALLY THE GODZILLA MOVIE "MONSTER ZERO". INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER is its absurd and nonsensical international title. It is a U.S./ Japan co-production. The movie was released in Japan in 1965 as GREAT MONSTER WAR. It was released internationally as INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER. In 1970 it was released
in America as MONSTER ZERO on a double bill with WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS. It continued to play on television
as MONSTER ZERO until it was replaced on TV and on VHS in the late 1980s by a version titled GODZILLA VS.
MONSTER ZERO.
INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER is unusual in that , though it is basically a sequel to the previous film GHIDORAH THE THREE HEADED MONSTER it takes place in the 1980s: this puts it after the next eight
movies. Both INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER & DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (set in 1999) take place
after the rest of the original series. This means that King Ghidorah appears in GODZILLA VS. GIGAN
before his appearance in INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER and his eventual death in DESTROY ALL MONSTERS.
Here is a list of all the original classic GODZILLA films, it consists of three segments:
Segment 1:

Segment 2:
#3 KING KONG VS. GODZILLA #4 MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA #5 GHIDORAH: THE THREE HEADED MONSTER

The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh
Description
After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.
Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15
I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!
It got me to join.......2006-11-12
"Heartbreak ridge," is one of those movies that I think turned into an unintentional recruiting movie. First off, for those true devil dogs, like me, you all recognize Eastwood's character of GySgt Highway as the epitomy of what Chesty Puller described as a Marine. How many marines have encountered Gunnys, Sergeant Majors, and First Sergeants that held the same attitude and mystique that Gunny Highway had? I mean, first off, a combat veterean who tells a POG (Marines will know that term) officer to go "F" himself, is the kind of NCO we wanted to follow. I know that when I first watched this movie, it made me want to join (which I did) and be just like Gunny Highway (which I didn't). For the people who see this movie and say it portrays the Corps in a negative light, go live with a Marine infantry unit, and you'll see how realistic it is. It may not be the best Marine Corps story (I save that for Jarhead), but its one of the best out there, better than Full Metal Jacket. I reccomend that all 0311 Marines, and really, any Marine, should add this to their "Must- Own" collection.
Worst movie Eastwood ever made.......2006-09-17
This movie is so bad that even the Army, which supported it at first, withdrew there support. Eastwood's character started his career in the US Army during the Korean War where he fought in a battle later called "Heartbreak Ridge". The story line was so inept and the telling of the tale so bad that the Army withdrew its support in the production. The film company then had to rewrite to scipt so that Eastwood's character changes services and enlist in the USMC after the Korean War and fights in the Vietnam War.
So all of you "Leathernecks" looking for a "pride of the Corps" tale should pass, it isn't going to happen in this story. In fact, the movie takes pains to present the USMC in a very negative light. That the Corps continued to support this production reflects just how desperate it was for any mention from Hollywood.
The script is pathetic, the production weak, and the conclusion unsupportable. Send Hollywood a message and do not support this movie.
"Shut your mouth, Hippie!".......2006-09-05
An excellent movie, Heartbreak Ridge, brings to the screen the story of a down-on-his-luck sergeant in the U.S. Marines who is given another chance/shot at what he loves the most: his job, his woman, and his men.
Clint Eastwood and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the humor, are all wonderful!
In short, Heartbreak Ridge is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!
