"So," Tony Soprano asks analyst Dr. Melfi in the wake of not-so-dearly-departed Livia's death, "we're probably done here, right?" Sorry, Tone, not by a long shot. Unresolved mother issues are the least of the Family man's troubles in the brutal and controversial third season of The Sopranos. Ranked by TV Guide among the top five greatest series ever, The Sopranos justified its eleven-month hiatus with some of its best, and most hotly debated, episodes that continue the saga of the New Jersey mob boss juggling the pressures of his often intersecting personal and professional lives. The third season garnered 22 Emmy nominations, earning Lead Actor and Actress honors for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco for their now-signature roles as Tony and his increasingly conflicted wife, Carmela.
The Sopranos continued to upend convention and defy audience expectations with a deliberately paced, calm-before-the-storm season opener that revolves around the FBI's attempts to bug the Soprano household, and a season finale that (for some) frustratingly leaves several plot lines unresolved. The second episode, "Proshai, Livushka," confronts the death of the venerable Nancy Marchand, who capped her career with perhaps her greatest role as malignant matriarch Livia. A jarring scene between Tony and Livia that uses pre-existing footage is a distraction, but Carmela's unsparing smackdown of Livia at the wake redeems the episode. "Employee of the Month," in which Dr. Melfi is raped and considers whether to exact revenge by telling Tony of her attack, earned Emmys for its writers, and is perhaps Emmy nominee Lorraine Bracco's finest hour. The darkly comic "Pine Barrens"--another memorable episode, directed by Steve Buscemi--strands Paulie (Tony Sirico) and Christopher (Michael Imperioli) in the forest with a runaway corpse. Other story arcs concern the rise of the seriously unstable Ralph Cifaretto (Joe Pantoliano) and Tony's affair with "full-blown loop-de-loo" Gloria (Emmy nominee Annabella Sciorra). Plus, there is Tony's estrangement from daughter Meadow (Jamie Lynn Sigler), his wayward delinquent son Anthony, Jr. (Robert Iler), Carmela's crisis of conscience, bad seed Jackie Jr., and the FBI--which, as the season ends, assigns an undercover agent to befriend an unwitting figure in the Soprano family's orbit. Stay tuned for season four. --Donald Liebenson
Customer Reviews:
a lively season .......2007-05-15
This is a favorite season of my family--the powerful rape of Dr. Melfi still gets to me (how she could not tell Tony!) and shows how she is a better person then most. Gloria and Tony were the funnest paring to watch as Tony met his match in her. Pine Barrens is of course a classic in the Christopher/Paulie relationship--I don't think is has ever again been presented better. The addtion of Ralphie made a nice arch-type to Tony, but I could have done with less Jackie Jr.
Sopranos epic matures and expands with stellar Season Three.......2007-05-11
The first three seasons of HBO's "The Sopranos" just get better and better. Too many series get lost after the original premise gets played out and the writers have nowhere for their characters to go after the first big climax. "The Sopranos" is different - as each conflict gets resolved, two new crises emerge, each as dire and entertaining as the last.
But the series never spins out of control. Tony, Carmela, Dr. Melfi, Meadow, Christopher . . . all of these characters remain true, even where they are over the top. Season Three features some of the finest writing TV has to offer, and the cast led by James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, and Lorraine Bracco continues to offer stellar performances down the line.
Some of the plot lines that play major roles in Season Three include:
Tony finding peace in the arms of another woman (Annabella Sciorra), only to find that peace shattered;
Carmela struggling with the guilt that comes from living off blood money;
Janice takes on the Russians, finds God, and a narcoleptic boyfriend;
Tony struggles to handle a rebellious, murderous captain (Joe Pantoliano) while also trying to keep the son he wished he had, Jackie Aprile, Jr., in line;
Meadow's off at college and thinks she has found true love, twice;
Dr. Melfi struggles with vengeance and whether to use Tony to exorcise her demons;
The death of Livia (Nancy Marchand) affects everyone;
Uncle Junior struggles with cancer and house arrest;
and the FBI continues its unsuccessful war against the Soprano family, but starts to show some promise.
As you can see, Season Three offers plenty of meat on the bone for its audience - I didn't even mention the best episode of the season, which puts Christopher and Paulie in the New Jersey snowbound countryside chasing a dead Russian.
Fans of the first two seasons need no encouragement to check out Season Three. If you haven't started this series yet, get to Season One and start watching!
ANOTHER GREAT SEASON! .......2007-03-10
Season 3 is another really good one and it contains my favorite episode to date (Pine Barrens)I was happy they "retired" some characters that really got on my nerves. I did not like the menu screen on this one as much as the first two seasons, but the DVD transfers are excellent! you can find these sets for $20.00 a season if you look around.
The Sopranos only gets better..........2007-02-13
The Sopranos, season 3, continues the story of Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mob boss who has to deal with all the hassels of organized crime as well as being the father of two kids and living in a tested marriage lifestyle. The thrid season does have its moments, and there are a lot of twists that made me want to continue on to season 4 and beyond...
Mr. Ruggerio's Neighborhood: An FBI agent named Agent Harris and his team construct a plan to bug the Soprano's household while everyone inside are away. This requires extensive planning from everyone, including tailing all the members of the Soprano household, even the maid, and planning when the right exact time is to set up a bug in the house. Meanwhile Tony is watching for any suspicious behavior from Patsy Parisi, a brother whose twin was killed and who was an ally of Uncle Junior.
Proshai Livushka: Tony is worried that his mom is going to rat on him to the Feds, but fortunately for him that never happens because Livia passes away. Despite her last wishes to not have a huge reception or funeral, Janice [Tony's sister] returns to throw a giant send-off. Meanwhile Meadow has a new boyfriend named Noah, who is both African American and Jewish, and Tony makes his own feelings for their relationship very clear, and it does not please Meadow one bit.
Fortunate Son: Christopher finally becomes a made man, but soon realizes its not all glamour and glory. Janice moves into her mother's house, but realizes that the Russian nurse, Svetlana, has been given a valuable record collection. Tensions mount after Svetlana refuses to give the collection to Janice. Meanwhile Tony and Dr. Melfi finally began to make headway in figuring out just what is causing Tony's panic attacks.
Employee of the Month: A man named Ralph, who took over the late mob boss Jackie Aprile's garbage business, is dating Jackie's widow and has endeared himself to Jackie's son, Jackie Jr. However he and Tony do not get along very much. However the real story is with Dr. Melfi, who becomes the victim of a very serious crime. Janice and Svetlana's feud comes to head with the introduction of the Russian mafia, and Tony can't help but wonder why a New York City mob boss, Johnny Sack, has come to town.
Another Toothpick: A retired hit man named Bobby "Bacala" Baccilieri comes out for one last hit against the wishes of his son and Uncle Junior and ends up in a bloody and violent gunfight. Christopher convinces his girlfriend, Adriana, to quit her job at Artie's restaurant, which leads to some questionable antics by Artie. Carmela is now actually taking Tony's therapy sessions with him, which leads to some awkward moments in Dr. Melfi's office. Also Tony fixes a speeding ticket, but soon regrets his decision.
University: Ralph is having a seriously violent relationship with a stripper that leads to a moment of violence between him and Tony in a parking lot. Meadow's relationship with Noah is put to the test when her needy roommate starts hanging around them all the time as they try to cheer her up.
Second Opinion: Tony wants Uncle Jr. to get a second opinion about him possibly having cancer. Carmela takes Dr. Melfi's advice and starts seeing a shrink. Meanwhile Christopher has to continue to deal with embarrassing situations with Paulie regarding with him being a made man now, and finally Tony has a "chat' with the wife of the late former friend of the family.
He Is Risen: Tony's feud with Ralph soon starts to escalate after taking Ralph's invitation to come to Thanksgiving away. Ralph, upset at how he is being treated, goes to New York crime boss Johnny Sack for help. Meanwhile Meadow and Jackie Aprile Jr. soon realize they have a lot more in common than they thought and start dating. Also Tony sees a beautiful patient of Dr. Melfi's and generously gives up his appointment so the other patient can see Dr. Melfi instead.
The Telltale Moozadell: Tony has a new woman, a Mercedes saleswoman, and takes her all over the place in style. Christopher gives Adrianna her own club, while he and Furio are the two partners behind the scenes, but there are problems with drug dealing in the club which Furio takes care of. Also Anthony Jr. is caught vandalizing his school, but the punishment given to him from the school leaves Carmela a little puzzled. And finally Tony gives Jackie Jr. a serious talk about treating Meadow with respect.
To Save Us All from Satan's Power...: Tony catches Jackie Jr. at a club with a woman who is not Meadow, and wants to "talk" to Jackie Jr. about it. Its Christmas time and for the first time in a long time there is no Santa to play for the kids coming to visit to get presents, so everyone points the finger at someone else to play Santa. Tony is also haunted by the memory of one of his former best friends, who he took out at the end of season two, and his memories only double after a Christmas present from Meadow.
Pine Barrens: After losing a victim in the South Jersey wilderness, Paulie and Christopher struggle with injuries, hunger, extreme cold, and no idea if they will survive the night. Meadow starts to get a suspicion that Jackie Jr. is cheating on her, which leads to a surprising ending. Also, Tony's new mistress Gloria may have some hidden problems, problems that are surprisingly similar to another woman of Tony's past...
Amour Fou: Jackie Jr. hears a tale from Ralph about how his own father became a made man and decides to rob a local card game. This decision may turn out to be his very last...Meanwhile Tony finds it harder and harder to spend time with Gloria, but after she threatens to tell Carmela all about their secret relationship, Tony has to figure out what to do with her. Meanwhile Carmela has had a huge guilt trip because of how she lives and where the money comes to pay for all her gifts from Tony and decides to confess to a priest.
The Army of One: Anthony Jr. gets in trouble yet again at his school, so the decision is made to send him to military school to put some discipline into him. Also there is another death in the family that results in everything falling apart. Paulie is upset because Ralph owes him money, so they have a sit down to discuss things, and finally the entire family gathers in Artie's restaurant where Uncle Jr. makes his return to the family in full swing...
This is still one of the greatest shows ever made. Each season is worth watching again and again. I will continue to review each season until I have finished the whole series. Season3, much like 1 and 2 that I have already reviewed, is highly recommended...
Impressive.......2007-01-23
The storylines and acting performances are tremendous. There were many a night where you want to watch only one episode, and get sucked into watching five. You will not be disappointed.

Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is a two-hour television movie created by J. Michael Straczynski (original creator of the Babylon 5 series) for the Sci-Fi Channel. The telefilm takes place in 2264 after the wars are over and a new age of space exploration has begun. Science-fiction fans are notoriously hard to please, and few have anything good to say about The Legend of the Rangers, produced in 2002 to introduce a spinoff of the popular Babylon 5 TV series. The naysayers have a point. Few elements of this 90-minute pilot, subtitled "To Live and Die in Starlight," will likely be memorialized among the genre's golden moments; the dialogue is often clunky and on-the-nose, the acting is less than stellar, and the effects work, while pretty good, doesn't live up to the standard set by Stargate, Farscape, and others. Nevertheless, there's a reasonably compelling story here, involving the elite Rangers (made up of humans and aliens alike, including the Minbari, who sport "head bones" instead of hair and whose cute little ears are placed on the sides of their necks) and the threat posed to the universe by a mysterious new foe known as "the Hand" (these are some seriously bad dudes, a race that has lain dormant for many years but is now back with a vengeance). Front and center is human Ranger David Martell (played by Dylan Neal). Court-martialed for choosing to save his crew rather then lead them to certain death (in violation of a code mandating that "we do not retreat, whatever the reason"), he's put in command of the Liandra, a ship that's not only funkier than Han Solo's Millennium Falcon but haunted to boot. Of course, as events play out, Martell and his pals end up as the last line of defense against the Hand, not only pitted against these implacable enemies but also dealing with a traitor among the good guys. The themes (honor vs. expediency, dark forces arrayed against peace-seekers, human impetuousness tangling with ancient alien wisdom) are familiar, and the outcome is far from unpredictable. Still, there are a lot less entertaining ways to spend 90 minutes than with Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers. --Sam Graham
Product Description
Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is a two-hour television movie created by J. Michael Straczynski (original creator of the Babylon 5 series) for the Sci-Fi Channel. The telefilm takes place in 2264 after the wars are over and a new age of space exploration has begun. The Interstellar Alliance has been organized to establish and maintain peace among its member worlds, including Earth. The Rangers are an elite military force made up of hand-picked young, smart, dedicated human and alien members who combine the high-tech elements of space travel with the idealism and honor of the knights of old. They encounter a previously unknown alien race whose lethal power is far greater than any force previously known to Earth or any other world in the Interstellar Alliance.

Why is this getting such good reviews?.......2007-06-28
It's pure drek.
Trash. Junk. Probably the worst story ever produced by the Babylon 5 series (yes even worse than Infection).
So why's it getting such high reviews. It deserves no stars.
Good Movie.......2007-06-09
This is a good movie because it allows us to see the G'Kar character progress into a later time after the Babylon 5 series. It is not clear exactly what year this takes place, but I think it is after the Drakh plague is cured from the Crusade series, so I would say it would have to be about 2270. I think it was supposed to start a series about the Rangers whose entire story was never told. The DVD is as cheap as they come. It has absolutely no extras. It has no commentary. I think they could have done a better job on the DVD.
Disappointing.......2007-06-05
It does not hold true to the quality we (B5 fans) expect from Babylon 5. G'Kar's dialogue, rather than capturing the depth and likeability of his character, seems artificial, forced, and lame. He has been turned into a comic relief character, and made to spew trite one-liners that G'Kar on Babylon 5 would never have said. I remember him saying something similar to, "Love to stay. Can't. Have to go. Kiss kiss, bye bye." That, and other scenes (like one in which the weapons girl destroys a mine field by screaming and flailing her limbs around in some kind of impractical, immersive, interactive targeting room) make me feel embarrassed for the movie and the franchise, rather than proud of it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a hard-core B5 fan, and you can bet that I've already pre-ordered The Lost Tales. But this particular piece of the B5 world is very disappointing, and I don't recommend it for anyone, B5 fans or otherwise.
I had no idea that Rangers cursed so much..........2007-06-05
The Legend of the Rangers was quite a disappointment considering how much hope there was for another successful Babylon 5 series, though by no means is it a terrible movie.
The year is 2264 and a young Ranger captain with discipline problems (God knows why that was necessary) is assigned command of a 20-year-old derelict ship (!), the Liandra, and ordered to escort a Valen-class ship carrying a number of Interstellar Alliance dignitaries, to a secret location. When the two ships are ambushed by three unidentified craft, the Rangers realize that another great evil is brewing; one that could overshadow the Shadows themselves...
The major setbacks are in relation to:
1) Captain David Martell who is too young, too arrogant, and too obnoxious to be likable. Moreover he lies (!), he curses (!), he cannot control his anger (!), and he bets money in the midst of a crisis! Am I missing something here? It seems he is anything but a Ranger, let alone a Ranger captain!
Tannier was way more acceptable/appropriate as a Ranger and as a captain than Martell, and he proved it beyond any doubt. In addition, Dulann should have been Captain hands down while Martell should have been washing dishes or mopping the floor/deck.
2) In the plot in which they (his superiors and the Grey Council) made an issue of Martell's leaving the battle when he had no weapons to fight with was simply absurd.
3) The enemy ships' tactics were moronic: The 2 enemy ships decided to leave the scene without finishing the job confident that the third one was more than enough. Why??? And why the hurry anyway?
Moreover, the second sophisticated enemy ship did not check for life signs (!) or explosives (!) and took the bait... after that the third sophisticated enemy ship did scan for life signs, but not for explosives such as grenades! Give us a break!
4) Have the Rangers been reduced to the point that there are no White Stars left and top dignitaries travel on "space bricks" escorted by 20-year-old junk, and all that without explanation? The Valen was pathetic as far as ships go, while the Liandra was worse yet, and the Intestellar Alliance's top diplomats/representatives had to endure travel on these ships. The year is 2264, so it's less than two years since Sheridan and Delenn left Babylon 5 for Minbar. What in Valen's name happened???
5) The alien crewmembers, except the Drazi, were rather interesting and quite promising, but the humans were just bad.
Tirk, the Drazi, looks like the big orange fella from Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. Kit did not even look Japanese, the guy with the disguises belonged on a different show, not B5, while the girl/gunner was just sad...
6) As much as Andreas Katsulas/G'kar tried, Dylan Neal was definitely a poor choice at best for Captain Martell.
7) With so much as stake, they could have had Delenn or Sheridan (or even Vir or Lochley) along with G'kar.
Overall, the story/plot is a good one (with the haunting being an attention-grabbing twist), the special effects are naturally better (technology has progressed), the dialogues were way below average (those responsible should be subjected to corporal punishment), the music was all right (though nothing compared to past scores), while the acting needs a lot of work as the cast carry out their performances rather poorly (one can tell that they are a bit uneasy), however, that is the usually case with most series in the beginning. In short, The Legend of the Rangers is missing that B5 feel, and that pretty much says it all. Please bring back Babylon 5! You owe it to the fans!
The Rangers. Possibilities........2007-05-27
This was a new approach to build on the origional series, and over-all was enjoyable. I liked the hard decisions that had to made by the main character to survive, and the martial arts training scenes. Effects as always were great and the plot was good. I found the aspect of the gunner girl weaving around blasting and yelling in the firing chamber some-what beyond the way this advancement in technology could have been handled, but if that was my only criticism, then it was enjoyable viewing. Could have been expanded to some sort of mini-series perhaps? The option as always was there. No problem adding this to my B5 collection. Give it a go!

Alien envoys come to the giant space station in the pilot that launched the five-year TV series.

The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.
Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. Dalkin

Babylon 5 - The Movie Collection.......2007-06-09
Two of the movies skip in a few places. The movies were good. Came in good time
It keeps getting better and better!.......2007-06-06
Babylon 5 - The Gathering: "And so it begins..."
A good pilot to an excellent series, Babylon 5 - The Gathering, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral territory.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The year is 2257, nine years after the Earth-Minbari War (one year before the series begins), and representatives from the four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The arrival, however, of the fifth major space-faring race's ambassador, the Vorlon Kosh, will result in quite a bit of turbulence...
Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, carry out their performances well though one can tell that they are a bit uneasy, as is the case with most series in the beginning. 4 Stars
In the Beginning: Guaranteed to shed a tear
The year is 2278 and an elderly Emperor Mollari sensing his end is nearing narrates the story of the Earth-Minbari War and its heroes to a young Centauri boy, his sister and their nanny.
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors' performances are highly commendable.
In the Beginning contains a lot of information found within the first four seasons of B5 and then more, therefore, it should be viewed at some point during season V, preferably right before Sleeping in Light, the last of the original episodes. 5 Stars
Thirdspace: "It's anti-life itself"
Though I haven't yet read the book (for which I've heard good things), Thirdspace the movie was quite a disappointment.
Set during Season IV, the crew of Babylon 5 recovers a huge ancient artifact, which when activated could bring more doom and destruction than the Shadows themselves...
1) To start with there is no Garibaldi, Gkar or Londo and their absence is definitely felt.
2) Everybody is too stiff. Performances seem forced and not natural, especially Dellen and Vir who are not their usual selves.
3) Sheridan scoots through an intense space battle in a space suit (!), dodging both friendly and hostile fire (!), plants a nuke manually (!), gets out avoiding the guardians (!), survives the nuclear blast and then jokes with Delenn... Hmmm... Am I missing something?
4) Finally the elevated level of horror served as a repellent more than anything else.
2.5 Stars
The River of Souls: "Life in Death... Immortality!"
The year is 2263, six months after President Sheridan's departure for Minbar, and the Soul Hunters return with an unexpected visit to Babylon 5... en mass.
Though most of the major characters are absent (similarly to Thirdspace), excluding Captain Lochley, Security Chief Zack Allen, Lt Corwin, and Michael Garibaldi, the River of Souls turns out to be excellent in every possible way; the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all wonderful!
There is also the surprise, though not great, appearance by Martin Sheen, who probably should have stuck to the original plan and played the archeologist instead of the Soul Hunter. 4.5 Stars
A Call to Arms: Now this is a Babylon 5 Movie!
AMAZING from start to finish, A Call to Arms brings to the screen the long awaited conflict with the hated Drakh! The Year is 2267 and President Sheridan is contacted by the Techno-Mages who have been keeping tabs on the Shadows' former servants/allies and who inform him that the Drakh are on the warpath. Their target... Earth!
Bruce Boxleitner, Jerry Doyle, Jeff Conaway, Tracy Scoggins, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the special effects are simply incredible!
I wish I could give it 6 Stars!!! KEEP'EM COMING!!!
THEY DID A BETTER JOB ON THIS SET OF DVDS........2007-05-28
THIS SET OF DVDS HAS MORE COMMENTARY THAN THE SEASON 1-5 DVDS OF BABYLON 5. IT DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF EXTRAS, BUT THEY CERTAINLY PUT MORE TIME, THOUGHT, EFFORT, AND MONEY INTO THIS SET THAN THEY DID THE OTHERS. THE PACKAGING IS A LETTER BETTER TOO. IN THE END THE MOVIES ARE VERY GOOD. MY FAVORITES WERE "IN THE BEGINNING", AND THE CRUSADE PILOT "A CALL TO ARMS." "A CALL TO ARMS," IS AS MUCH A CRUSADE STORY AS A BABYLON 5 STORY. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY DID NOT PUT IT ON THE CRUSADE SET OF DVDS.
Babylon5. The Movies. A must-have accompliment........2007-05-27
Babylon 5, The Movies are the icing on the cake to the wonderful origional series. They enhanse the already powerful plot and give the viewers a fuller path where this great epic is headed. I found The Gathering to be entertaining, but some-what primitive in its alien portraits, especially where Delenn was concerned. However her appearance was quickly rectified in the movie, In The Beginning, and she became more delightful as the series progressed. The origional slightly stilted characterisations eased out after that first pilot and the cast came to live their parts. I personally believe that the movie, In The Beginning, should be viewed first as a kick in to anyone wanting to become involved with whole series. Anyone who owns, or enjoys Babylon 5, the series wouldn't want to be with-out this great set of Movies.
B5-Movie Collection.......2007-05-21
One of the movies - 'In the Beginning' got to me all scratched up. I tried playing it but it froze up on me toward the end of the movie. I gave Amazon 2 stars for this because at least they promptly refunded me my entire purchase back + the shipping. I don't know what happened but it's kind of wierd that only one of the DvDs was damaged. It was in the socket when I got it too so I don't think it was caused by shipping. Oh well, buyer beware I guess.

Delenn's future love interest, Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) arrived on Babylon 5 in the first episode of season 2, "Points of Departure." The show marked the handing over of command of B5 to Sheridan from Commander Jeffery Sinclair, actor Michael O'Hare becoming a victim of studio politicians who wanted a bigger star in the leading role. This excellent installment also revealed more about why the Minbari surrendered to Earth at the Battle of the Line when they were on the verge of victory. "Revelations" explains that Sheridan's wife, Anna, died during an archaeological survey of the world Z'ha'dum, the name being just one of many references to Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings (the bridge at Khazad-Dum). "The Geometry of Shadows" introduced the Technomages, characters who featured more significantly in the ill-fated spinoff series Crusade (1999), while "The Coming of Shadows" proved to be Babylon 5's finest hour to date. The story of political intrigue foreshadowing the fate of two of the major characters beat Apollo 13, Toy Story, 12 Monkeys, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Visitor" to win the Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation at the 1996 World Science Fiction Convention and proved so powerful that J. Michael Straczynski included it in his Complete Book of Scriptwriting.
"And Now for a Word" took the unusual step of presenting a day-in-the-life of B5 seen through the eyes of a TV news crew, just as the Narn declared war on the Centauri. The inclusion of a PSI-Corps commercial paid homage to Paul Verhoeven's satirical ads in Robocop (1987), while his later Starship Troopers (1997) seemed at times like a spoof of B5's earnest space opera. In "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," Sheridan learns that Morden was on the ship on which Anna died; the episode sees the captain pushed to his limits by grief and determination to discover why Morden survived. Three exceptional shows conclude the season. The Narn-Centauri war escalates in "The Long, Twilight Struggle," Sheridan faces a most unusual ordeal in "Comes the Inquisitor," and in "The Fall of Night" all hope of peace is shattered as a nerve-racking assassination attempt reveals a startling secret about Ambassador Kosh. --Gary S. Dalkin

This Scifi Series is Great.......2007-07-03
The second season is the excellent. It is the start of a wild exciting ride through the Babylon 5 story. Worth every penny
They don't make them like this anymore........2007-05-12
The second season of Babylon 5 is one of the best sci fi out there. The main leads grow in such a way that even by the end of the season I felt a bit of sadness for Londo, even though he was responible for the near genocide of a whole race! The actors are so good and the storys so compelling, that outside of the 3rd season of STNG I would say that this is a good as it gets! I wish there was more tv like this on the air now!
Excellent Service.......2007-03-22
I have been slowly collecting all the Babylon 5 seasons, using coupons and discounts to get the best price. I bought this one from amazon because the price was lower than normal for amazon. These disk sets have a problem in that some times a disk or two becomes dislodged and floats around the case. This allows the disk to get scratched so that it will not play properly. So far this has happened everywhere i bought, and i had to return the disk set at least once before i had a good set. This is where amazon excells. There is no fee to return a damaged item for replacement (not true of other online sellers). Plus, the day i logged in and indicated i needed a replacement set, another set was shipped out to me and i had it in a few days, before i even mailed back the first shipment. Another seller took a month to proces my return and ship back a replacement, and i had to pay to return the damaged product. I would strongly recommend checking any of the Babylon 5 series disks closely (i fast forwarded each disk to check for places where it skipped or go stuck). This product has serious packaging issues, but amazon has you covered if there are any problems.
Babylon 5 - The Complete Second Season.......2007-03-21
I have always enjoyed watching this series and have been waiting for the chance to be able to watch anytime I want. I plan on buying the whole set eventually.
Could it get any more addictive? Probably not..........2007-03-19
An excellent series, Babylon 5, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral space.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The date is 2259, eleven years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the five major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. This peace, however, is in jeopardy when two of the major races resort to war...
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andrea Thompson (who is HOT!!!), Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
The only setback is in relation to the not-so-hidden agenda of promoting a specific religion through Ivanova. What is the point? What a waste of precious minutes of an otherwise wonderful show.
Nevertheless, that is so minor and insignificant compared to:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots that keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters (especially the aliens ones) that become more and more developed, and
3) The wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show and wanting more!
Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

The epic sci-fi series Babylon 5 was a unique experiment in the history of television. It was effectively a novel for television in five seasons, consisting of 110 episodes with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The first season introduces the main characters, headed this year by Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle), and familiarizes the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257.
The first episode, "Midnight on the Firing Line," plays at a breathless pace, introducing Commander Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian) and establishing the conflict between the Narn and Centauri races as represented by their ambassadors, G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) and Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik). Then follow several mediocre episodes that initially give the impression that B5 is a Star Trek clone afflicted with "silly alien of the week" syndrome. With "And the Sky Full of Stars," B5 really begins to hit its stride, Sinclair being forced to relive his mysterious experiences during the Earth-Minbari war. Filler shows such as "TKO" are notable only for being controversially violent, while the disappointing "Grail" points to writer-creator J. Michael Straczynski's fascination with Arthurian mythology. "Signs and Portents" introduces the sinister Mr. Morden (Ed Wasser) and offers the chilling first appearance of the Shadows, an ancient alien threat.
B5 hits warp speed with a run of exceptional episodes building to the season finale. The two-part "Voice in the Wilderness" has Mars breaking into open revolt against Earth and the discovery of a "Great Machine" on the dead world Epsilon 3. Referencing 1950s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, the story leads to the superb time-travel-based "Babylon Squared." Season finale "Chrysalis" proves more than just the usual television cliffhanger, placing Minbari ambassador Delenn in conflict with her ruling Grey Council and forcing on her a decision that laid the groundwork for Babylon 5's eventually becoming a great love story. --Gary S. Dalkin

Wake-Up Call.......2007-06-22
Preconditioned by Star Trek, it wasn't until viewing a second B-5 episod that it hit home: this series was realistic enough to frighten me, to re-shape my views on television, SiFi, life and the universe - which is what the best of SiFi and television should do for us. This was achieved by a faultless attention to detail which makes each episod greater than the sum of its parts, which are formidable: fine writing, directing, acting, set design (and dressing), stunning music, costuming, makeup, special effects, etc. Star Trek TNG will always hold a special place in my heart - but the attitudes and goals of BABYLON 5's heros is how I hope we will face the future - while giving us a boost in the present. Dare to conquer fear of the unknown!
PS: Even my husband, who does NOT like Sience Fiction, is now hooked!
Great Tone.......2007-04-10
There are a lot of shows out there. Now there are even quite a few Science Fiction shows. For instance, the new Battlestar Galactica has even seemed to have more success at trying to be Babylon 5 than Babylon 5 had at being Babylon 5. Battlestar Galactica is pretty much all about humans. While Babylon 5 is, too, there are a great number of realistic aliens on the space station that help give the human saga more dramatic weight and greater scope than is accomplished in any other TV series.
If you're a fan of Twin Peaks, Alias, or 24, then chances are that you can handle Babylon 5's impressive 5 year "Written Novel for Television" approach to storytelling. The show has its weaknesses, but give it a chance and its strengths will far outweigh them. It is one of the most meaningful TV programs ever made.
Can I give it 6 Stars?.......2007-03-13
An excellent series, Babylon 5, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral space.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The date is 2258, ten years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the five major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The complications, however, have only just begun...
Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andrea Thompson (who is HOT!!!), Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
The only (minor) setbacks are in relation to:
1) The Centauri Republic being run by... an emperor! Am I missing something?
2) What was the point of episode TKO? What a waste of an episode of an otherwise wonderful show.
On the positive side:
1) The GREAT plot and concept.
2) The GREAT characters (especially the aliens ones).
3) The wonderful feeling of being addicted to the show and wanting more!
BTW, as others have also pointed out, Chief of Security Garibaldi is awfully similar to Bruce Willis (!); was that coincidental or did it just turn out that way?
Anyway, Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
OK, 5 Stars for the DVDs, 0 Stars for the inserts.......2007-02-24
Because...we never got the insert. All the B5 DVD sets come with a booklet, so when this one showed up without, we returned it to Amazon. They promptly sent out another one--again, sans booklet even though we had asked them to check. We returned the second one, and have never received a replacement or the promised credit. So I'm without product and without money. My follow up emails to Amazon have gone unanswered.
Granted, it is Warner's fault that the set came without the booklet, but Amazon has the clout to take Warner to task and insist that they send out complete products. It would also benefit Amazon, when they get this kind of complaint, to actually OPEN the box before shipping it, and if it is incomplete, to open ALL the boxes and return incomplete products to the manufacturer with directions to send out complete products. After all, it is Amazon's reputation that is damaged.
I am hoping that eventually, somewhere, we will find this set with the booklet, but undoubtedly it will be at a physical store, not online.

"Matters of Honor" launched Babylon 5's third season with the introduction of the White Star, a spacecraft added to enable more of the action to take place away from the station. Also introduced was Marcus Cole (Jason Carter)--in another nod to The Lord of the Rings, a Ranger not so far removed from Tolkien's Strider. In "Voices of Authority" the show finds an epic scale as Ivanova seeks the mysterious "First Ones" for allies against the Shadows, and evidence is discovered pointing to the truth behind President Santiago's assassination. A third of the way through the season "Messages from Earth," "Point of No Return," and "Severed Dreams" prove pivotal, changing the nature of the story in a way previously unimaginable on network TV. Earth slides into dictatorship, the fascistic Nightwatch takes control of off-world security, and Sheridan take decisive action by declaring Babylon 5 independent.
"Interludes and Examinations" presented the death of a major supporting character, while the two-part "War Without End" reached apocalyptic dimensions in a complex tale resolving the destiny of Sinclair and the fate of Babylon 4 (dovetailing elegantly with the events of the first season's "Babylon Squared"), resolving a 1,000-year-old paradox and presenting a vision of a very dark future for Sheridan and Delenn. All this was trumped by the monumental "Z'ha'dum." In the preceding "Shadow Dancing" Anna Sheridan (Melissa Gilbert, Bruce Boxleitner's real-life wife) returned from the dead, no longer entirely human. In the mythologically resonant climax Anna invited Sheridan back to the Shadow homeworld with no hope of survival. Just as in The Lord of the Rings Gandalf fell into the abyss at Khazad-Dum, so Sheridan took a comparable leap into the unknown on an alien world. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
I Love This Series.......2007-05-01
This is a well-written and wonderfully acted sci-fi series, and season 3 has some of the most exciting episodes in it. The characters are very rich and unique, and each has their own agenda and set of ethics motivating their actions. The series slowly builds from the beginning through every episode leading up to the climatic war of the shadows where everything finally ties together neatly, making perfect sense. The first 3 seasons are well worth the money and reveal more of the subplots when watching them the second time through. This is definitely a classic series worth having. I would suggest renting the pilot to get a bit of background information (although it's a bit slow) and owning seasons 1-3. Season 4 isn't quite as good as the first three, but it does have a few good episodes in it. The series wasn't as good after Claudia Christian and Bruce Boxleitner left the series, so I wouldn't recommend buying anything after season 4.
Here There Be Shadows..........2007-03-24
Babylon 5 Season III continues to shed light on the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major space station under Human control in neutral territory orbiting Epsilon 3.
The date is 2260, twelve years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the (remaining) four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at Babylon 5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. This peace, however, is long past now and Babylon 5 finds itself in the middle of the most deadly conflict the universe has seen to date... the Shadow War!
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
Season III has even managed to surpass the previous two seasons. Specifically:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters become more and more developed, and
3) That wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show grows ever bigger!
Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
Wonderful series, a little difficulty with the product........2007-02-12
I could write pages on how much I adore Babylon 5 but I'm not going to. The first product I received from Amazon was defective in that the sound was off in a few of the episodes. I couldn't tell you exactly what it sounded like but you'd know it if you heard it. In any case, when I put in my request for a replacement, my order was shipped out much more quickly than I expected and without the same glitch.
shadow end.......2007-01-16
this series raises the tone slightly from 1 & 2 and presents a higher level of intregue & conclusions
Babylon 5 - Season 3: the paragon of space Sci-Fi.......2007-01-08
If you already saw seasons 1 & 2 and liked them - there's no question: you will love seaon 3! The story you have seen unfold reaches a new level of intensity, and everything is coming together. With amazing character development, stunning space scenes, and thrilling plot, this season is possibly the best B5 season of all - and that in a series I would consider the very best Sci-Fi series created to date.
If you have not seen any Babylon 5, I recommend starting at the beginning. In many Sci-Fi series you can hop in somewhere and watch episode by episode. While this is possible with B5 due to completed mini-plot in each episode, one would miss the special allure of this marvelous series. The whole B5 universe and all the characters in it are part of a carefully crafted whole story. Each episode advances the global plot and each character. I found myself greatly disliking some characters on the onset of the series. Later, I could totally empathize with most (no matter how much I may have disagreed with their actions), and others changed so completely (yet believably) that they became some of my favorite characters.
In short: if you like Sci-Fi, treat yourself to this masterpiece. If I could only keep one TV-series of any kind: this would be it.

The future begins - or ends - here and now. Here is the huge space station Babylon 5. Now is the fateful year 2261. Commander John Sheridan has already declared the station free, breaking the ties between it and Earth Alliance. It was perhaps only a matter of time before he would have to fight to remain free. That time has come in this complete 22-episode fourth-season adventure presented on six discs and featuring an exciting array of exclusive extras.

Season 4 began on a high point with the Centauri Prime in the grip of the insane Emperor Cartagia (Wortham Krimmer) and a run of six shows leading to the climax of the war against the Shadows in "Into the Fire." If this colossal narrative was resolved a little too easily and the ultimate aim of the Shadows turned out to be a tad disappointing, it still proved to be the most powerful slice of space opera to ever grace the small screen. In the aftermath the sheer scale dropped back a little but the pace never slowed as the rest of the season played out in one relentless cycle of conspiracy, betrayal and conflict, Babylon 5 siding with the rebel Mars colony against the totalitarian Earth.
Meanwhile Delenn came increasingly into conflict with her own people and, paralleling her relationship with Sheridan, Garibaldi became involved with his ex-fiancée Lise Hampton (Denise Gentile), while an intense platonic love grew between Ivanova and Marcus Cole. On an unstoppable wave fuelled by roller-coaster plot twists and spectacular action shows from "No Surrender, No Retreat"--when Sheridan avows to overthrow EarthGov--to "Rising Star"--when the aim is realized--Babylon 5 achieved a consistent excellence rare in television. Yet within that run "Intersections in Real Time" stood out as a bold experiment; essentially a two-hand drama taking place entirely within one dimly lit room. Beyond this a major character died and Sheridan and Delenn married before the season finale again broke with expectation. In "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars," a future descendant of humanity one million years hence reviews excerpts from the history of Babylon 5. In one sequence set in 2762, a Brother is devoted to the preserving of history some time after the "Big Burn." A homage to Walter M. Miller's classic A Canticle for Leibowitz, Sheridan and Delenn have themselves become the stuff of legend. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
One of the best series, ever!.......2007-05-24
This series got better and better. It is well written, the characters are wonderful, well developed and well portrayed.
The fourth season, like all of them, was great! The DVD collection fills the void in the universe left by such an excellent show.
1261... What a year!.......2007-04-01
Babylon 5 Season VI continues to shed light on the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major space station under Human control in neutral territory orbiting Epsilon 3.
The date is 2261 and representatives from both the major and minor space-faring races have all gathered at Babylon 5 in a last effort at achieving victory during the most deadly conflict the universe has seen to date... the Shadow War!
The only setbacks are in relation to:
1) Enough with the writer's, J. Michael Straczynski's, obsession with the Germans, the Soviets and WWII; it gets tiring after the first THREE seasons! JMS, as he himself states in The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 website, has a lot of (too much) personal issues/baggage going back to the WWII era: "I have had a longstanding interest and familiarity with this area...and through my European roots with relatives who were in Germany and Poland when the camps were in full swing, and later when the Russian government beat down its people. I have plenty of personal background on this one."
JMS would do well to keep all these personal issues... personal (!) and to himself. This is an outstanding sci-fi show that should not become the instrument or the means for anyone's personal agenda and not-so-hidden messages.
2) In the episode "The Exercise of Vital Powers," JMS trash talks Greeks through Garibaldi by stating that happiness for a Greek consists of "3 goats and some wine."
I wonder though, why JMS doesn't make similar "witty" jokes about Ivanovas' faith... Hmmm... He is a self-professed atheist, but is he though? I wonder...
3) What has happened to Vir? He is so much thinner, hyper and so much less adorable now...
On the positive side:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters become more and more developed, and
3) The wonderful feeling of being addicted to the show and wanting more!
4) The music has gotten even better in this season.
In conclusion, Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
Babylon 5 - The Complete Fourth Season.......2007-03-21
I have always enjoyed watching this series and have been waiting for the chance to be able to watch anytime I want. I plan on buying the whole set eventually.
The climatic season of a really great series.......2007-03-04
This is the real climax to the Babylon 5 series. True there is another to follow but it is a denounment to the series. Action, it is there. The Shadow War comes to a surprising conclusion. Earth and her colonies throw off the yoke that has held them, with help from B-5. The writing stay on line as a laser beam. The characters are well rounded and very real. Any fan of sci-fi space opera should have this in their collection.
Great season, very disappointing video quality.......2007-02-03
I just wanted to comment briefly on the video quality of this set. I just bought a new HDTV and was looking forward to watching this series filling that nice large screen in a proper 16:9 aspect ratio. As everyone probably knows, all the DVDs in this series suffer from some quality issues due to the way the CGI shots were originally done. This was noticeable in previous season releases as well as this one. So I was prepared for this when I popped the first disc in. But I wasn't prepared for the extreme amounts of grain in the video. When watching this on my old 32" Trinitron TV, the video looked fine. But on my new 46" HDTV, it looks really, really awful. All the flaws are laid bare on a large HDTV screen. At first, I thought it was an issue with my TV. But all my other DVDs look fantastic. So I tweaked the settings as much as I could, but it didn't really help much. Then for comparison purposes, I popped in a disc from Season 1. There is some noticeable grain there, too, but it's still quite watchable and it even gives it a nice film-like quality which is kind of pleasing. I also tried the movie "A Call to Arms" from the Babylon 5 movie collection set. It looks pretty good, too. But on the Season 4 set, and on "Thirdspace" from the movie set, the grain is seriously distracting and looks just plain bad. It has unfortunately ruined my enjoyment of this very good season. From what I've read, this seems to be a problem with the source and not with the DVD transfers themselves, so I don't know if this will ever be correctable. And like I said, it looks fine on a regular TV. But I just wanted to give a warning to anyone who plans to watch this on an HDTV someday. Prepare to be disappointed.

A disappointment after the superb two previous seasons, the final run of Babylon 5 found Claudia Christian departed and Ivanova replaced by Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Tracy Scoggins), who in a soap-opera twist turned out to be Sheridan's first wife. Sheridan was promoted to President of the Interstellar Alliance and the action moved to a group of telepaths seeking sanctuary from the PSI-Corp on B5. Giving a prominent role to Patricia Tallman's Lyta Alexander, a love story for her was woven with the leader of the telepaths, Byron (Robin Atkin Downs). Meanwhile the aftermath of the Shadow War was explored as the origin of human telepaths became clear in "Secrets of the Soul," and the appearance of PSI-Corp's Bester (Walter Koenig) brought the plight of the refugees to a powerful close in "A Tragedy of Telepaths" and "Phoenix Rising."
This was immediately followed by a rare episode not written by J. Michael Straczynski. Much was expected of "Day of the Dead," penned by Neil Gaiman, the British creator of DC's landmark Sandman comic and graphic novel series. Yet despite a change of tone including a guest appearance by Penn & Teller as 23rd-century comedy favorites Rebo & Zooty, the story proved an incongruous side trip into an unexplained twilight zone of fantasy. As usual the season picked up toward the end, with a string of fine political episodes leading to "The Fall of Centauri Prime" and the haunting "Objects at Rest," in which Sheridan and Delenn leave Babylon 5 for new quarters on Minbar.
The final episode, "Sleeping in Light," was directed by J. Michael Straczynski and made an epilogue to the series. Set 20 years later, after all the sound and fury this quiet, elegiac tale is the apotheosis of the love story that proved the balance to the tragedy of the preceding darkness. A personal story resolved against a background of the epic, at once transcendent, deeply human, and profoundly optimistic, "Sleeping in Light" is as moving as any hour in the history of television drama and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to one of the greatest series ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin
Product Description
From the beginning, both were running out of time. The space station that was the last, best hope for peace was sooner or later certain to be eclipsed by new political coalitions and technical advances. And John Sheridan, who guided the massive freeport through its most tumultuous days, knew that his own fate had been inalterably prophesied. Now both storylines converge in a 22-episode final season (with dazzling Exclusive DVD Extras!) whose events also include Sheridan's attempts to wage peace for the Interstellar Alliance, the tragic fate of the telepaths and the ultimate fireball destruction of the outmoded station after it is declared to be a spaceway navigational hazard. You are cleared for final approach to Babylon 5.

A Weak Ending.......2007-07-03
Babylon 5 was always intended to run for five seasons, no more, no less. Series creator J. Michael Straczynski had a detailed plan for a story that would unfold over five years. Unfortunately, during the fourth season, it was extremely doubtful that the fifth season would be made. The PTEN network, which was distributing the show, was collapsing, and there were no other takers.
As a result, Straczynski packed more story into season four (in case the series was cancelled), and when the last-minute intervention of TNT saved the show, there wasn't quite enough plot left over. In addition, TNT insisted on cutting production time by two days per episode, which means that both cast and crew had to make do with fewer rehearsals, less time to shoot and edit. It's not suprising that so many episodes have a flat, almost colorless feel to them.
The real disaster, of course, was the loss of lead actress Claudia Christian. While her replacement, Tracy Scoggins, surprised me, there's no time left to fully develop a new character, and Scoggins doesn't have the chance to grow into the role. Even so, Christian's character was such an integral part of the series that her absence is palpable.
In spite of these flaws, there are some good episodes, as Londo becomes Emperor (a mixed blessing, to be sure), and the saga of Centauri Prime comes to a close. This plot line contains the only real drama in Season 5, which is more of a an epilogue than a continuation of the series.
As a die-hard fan, I enjoyed Season 5 anyway, but it's true that the series could easily have ended with Season 4.
Babylon 5 Stars!.......2007-06-03
Season V of Babylon 5 brings to the screen the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major space station in neutral space.
The year is 2262, and the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3 has become the temporary home for the representatives of the newly established Alliance while the permanent headquarters are under construction on planet Minbar. Though things should be quieting down now, more trouble is brewing and threatening galactic peace...
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Jerry Doyle, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
Regarding this season's developments, I must admit that I did not shed a tear seeing Ivanova go and I did find Lochley to be an acceptable replacement, if not an improvement.
Nevertheless, there were some unfortunate instances; Vir is just not himself after losing all that weight, and there are times when Lyta Alexander and Lennier evolve into characters that are not as likable as they once were.
Furthermore, Byron and his cult of rogue telepaths were ever annoying to the point that the Psi Corps became indeed "Mother" and "Father" as Al Bester put it so often.
Nevertheless, that is all so minor and insignificant compared to:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots,
2) The GREAT, overall, character development,
3) The last episode, which leaves you breathless and gasping for air, and
4) The wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show and wanting more!
Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!
One of the best series, ever!.......2007-05-24
This series got better and better. It is well written, the characters are wonderful, well developed and well portrayed.
This, the planned final season, was a great conclusion and, as such, created a desire for more. The DVD collection fills the void in the universe left by such an excellent show.
For John and Delenn Alone.......2007-02-08
Tracey Scoggins? What the ham sandwich were they thinking?! Sorry but if Ivonnova couldn't be Captain they could have gotten anyone else but Tracey Scoggins! I see that not even half way through season 5 she became nothing but a 2nd player.
This season has 5 stars for the sake of John and Delenn Alone. For that matter, the last episode is enough.
Excelente, pero.......2007-01-03
Después de la guerra de sombras, esperaba que hubieran más cruces con Crusade pero no paso nada.
Y el último capítulo fue muy abrupto. Sin embargo es una serie imperdible de los '90 del siglo XX.

Tastefully designed for both beginning and advanced home-theater enthusiasts, the AVIA Guide to Home Theater is a terrific gateway to system set-up and integration--perfect for either planning or upgrading your home-entertainment system. AVIA, which was written by David Ranada of Stereo Review's Sound & Vision, takes full advantage of the nonlinear DVD-Video format. It lays out simply and clearly the basics of home theater: source components, video setup, and audio setup. Its seven chapters range in topics from home-theater components to viewing environments to system tools, and the disc features a host of professional-quality test signals for complete system calibration. Handy "hot buttons" give more depth on a range of subjects for those who want it. The disc gives insufficient weight to the importance of audio cable (and it recommends optical digital connections over the better-sounding coaxial type), but by and large AVIA is a trustworthy and extremely informative presentation. --Michael Mikesell
Description

"The AVIA Guide to Home Theater" is the single essential tool for the home theater enthusiast--whether novice or expert. Authoritatively written by Sound & Vision's technical editor, David Ranada, "The AVIA Guide to Home Theater" explains simply and by example everything you need to maximize your home theater.

OUTDATED INFORMATION.......2007-06-16
Just bought a 52 inch LCD 2007 model. The information does not even come close to addressing all the adjustments on these new sets. They spend time talking about adjustment to tube sets which is a complete wast of time. Very little Time is spent on how to do anything except some basic adjustments which you don't need a DVD for.
All the new kind of adjustments on new plasmas and LCD aren't even discussed.
I found this product a complete waste of my time and money.

Great easy way to calibrate your plasma!
Avia Guide to Home Theater review.......2007-05-29
Although very user-friendly and clearly explained, the content seems a bit outdated. They don't even HDMI. And there seems to be a gap between the presentation and the test tones. The former sounds simple but the latter is a bit difficult to use for beginners. More guidance needed.
Must Have for Home Theater.......2007-05-28
This is a great product. Pop it in and follow the menu. Extensive extras for adjusting and fine tuning any setup [projector, flat screen, tv]. Includes the colored films to look through for setup. My friends borrow it often for setting up and calibrating their AV setup. It is a must have for any home theater owner. Highly recommend it.
Not Suited To Plasma Tuning.......2007-05-25
The procedures for tuning brighness and contrast depend on adjusting the set's controls until some bars displayed on the screen appear/disappear. For my 2006 Panasonic Plasma, the bars never disappeared across the full range of the set controls. In other words, the techniques on the disc were not effective for adjusting this set. Like the instructions on the video, the tests seem oriented to an older generation of sets.
The color and sharpness adjustment displays did seem to work properly, but given the shortcomings described above, I would not recommend this product to owners of current equipment.

The first and only spin-off of Babylon 5, J. Michael Straczynski's short-lived sci-fi series Crusade had its roots in the B5 television movie A Call to Arms, in which Earth was battling a Drakh invasion at the end of the Shadow Wars. When Crusade begins, the Drakh have released a deadly virus that threatens to wipe out all 10 billion humans living on Earth unless a cure can be found in five years. To take on this monumental task, Captain Matthew Gideon (Gary Cole) is assigned command of the state-of-the-art Destroyer-class ship Excalibur. His crew includes telepath John Matheson (Daniel Dae Kim); pompous but brilliant archaeologist-linguist Max Eilerson (David Allen Brooks); Dureena, a member of the Thieves' Guild and the last surviving member of her species (Carrie Dobro); medical officer Sarah Chambers (Marjean Holden); and technomage Galen (Peter Woodward).
While Babylon 5 had five years to develop into a powerful saga, Crusade had its plug pulled after a mere 13 episodes (which were reordered for TNT's broadcast), and the series never really got its footing. Galen often took center stage, then disappeared for several episodes. Matheson was underutilized (other than to provide fans with clues about what happened in the Psi-Wars after B5 ended), and tough-guy Gideon bounced back and forth between his desire to save the human race and his own moral code. There were some good action scenes and intriguing concepts (developed in conjunction with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory). Special effects sometimes were impressive and sometimes showed budget constraints, and we never really saw the power and scope of the mile-and-a-half-long ship, other than the cool bullet cars used to traverse its length. But it did have its moments. If B5 was the spiritual companion to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with its space-station setting and long story arc, Crusade was more like a traditional Star Trek setting, with mostly stand-alone episodes involving first contact with various species (even if, due to the nature of the Excalibur's quest, such species were usually extinct). And there were occasional tantalizing hints of a broader conspiracy that might have allowed the series to soar. Regardless, B5 fans will welcome even a brief opportunity to revisit this universe, especially when the Excalibur visits the station in "The Rules of the Game." John Sheridan's ex-wife Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Tracy Scoggins) even earned a spot in the opening credits for her appearance in a few episodes. --David Horiuchi

A More Perfect B-5.......2007-06-22
Unlike the original five season arc of Babylon 5, Crusade is an episodic sci-fi adventure series taking the viewer from one majestically thoughout out world to the next. I honestly do not know why this series didn't take off. It was probably poor timing more than anything else. Unlike Babylon 5, a Crusade has a loosely twined story line. The story boasts much improved cgi from the original B-5 series. In addition, the music, though difficult to get used to at first, is not only enchanting, but adds powerful vibes to the show. Towards the end of the series, I really appreciated the direction MJS went with the production of this series. Finally, the story was really intriguing. It was paired by unique and captivating characters. This series may have been ahead of its time, seeing that the current top sci-fi shows are Stargate and Battlestar Galatica. It ran along a similar story frame.
Basically, the story begins where Babylon 5 left off. Earth was poisoned by allies of the Shadows who now haunt the characters at every turn. It's up to the crew of a special new, high tech ship to scavenger the galaxy to find a cure. In between, they run into unique worlds and adventures.
Personally, I loved this series. It had everything that B-5 lacked (don't get me wrong, I loved B-5). It had crisp imagery, better acting, and more creative sound effects/music. The only thing this series didn't have was a mainstream following. For that, I'm still perturbed.
THIS SHOW SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED AT LEAST 2 SEASONS.......2007-06-09
This was a very good show. It was not given a chance to develop into its full potential. I do not know how they were able to tell after just 13 episodes that it was not good enough. I was a big Babylon 5 fan that had never heard of this show until years later. I think it is a good continuation of the story of the Babylon 5 universe. The one complaint I have about the DVD is that it is cheap. The packaging is good, but there are almost no extras on the DVDs. There are only 2 commentaries and the extras at the end are very small.
Sci-Fi Sequel.......2007-05-27
This was a brilliant addition to the origional Babylon 5 series, and movies, and it is sad that it was never completed. What there is of it, is enjoyable and as always the characters are well created. Maybe some-one will be brave enough some day to actually finish off what this started. Excellent sets and plenty of action dotted with the odd humour to keep things from getting too grim. a worthy addition to my collection.
I love this tv series.......2007-05-12
Crusade - The Complete Series
I cried when I watched the last episode and realized there were no more. Babylon 5 was one of my top ten favorite television series of all time and this spin off (or follow up) was a worthy successor to the story. Crusade starring Gary Cole (one of the most talented actors working with way too many one season wonders to his credit) had drama, adventure, fantasy and fun. And it ended way too soon.
Is this show perfect? Hardly. But it's perfect to own and re-watch again and again. I need a Matthew Gideon fix periodically and this is the easiest way to get it. I do have one criticism though. The series was broadcast with episodes out of order and this dvd set follo
