In his aim to make an honest film about sex, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) has taken a somewhat documentary approach to Shortbus, a film describing various New Yorkers' sexual pathos. Framed by shots roving a homemade diorama of the city, Shortbus is comprised of vignettes featuring actors who helped craft this story of people's disconnect in sexual endeavors. Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and James (Paul Dawson), a gay couple experiencing a lull in their relationship, visit Sophia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist whose inability to orgasm results in her clients inviting her to a sex club after which the film is titled. Sophia's husband, Rob (Raphael Barker), is also willing to experiment, so the two independently embark on adventures in self-pleasure. Dominatrix Severin (Lindsay Beamish) plays a crucial role in Sophia and Rob's lives, as her search for real humanity overlaps with their desire for passion. As each character's plot complicates, the viewer sees a similar melancholy bulldozing its way into these seemingly disparate lives. The depression is repeatedly used in comedic scenes, such as when James is asked on a date while still hospitalized for his attempted suicide. Yo La Tengo's score, which includes Animal Collective among others, lends this film a graceful ambience. Unlike porn, Shortbus has a resonance that encourages the viewer to consider one's own sex life as an important aspect of happiness. --Trinie Dalton
Description
From the director of `Hedwig and the Angry Inch' comes SHORTBUS, an exploration into the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters find one another - and eventually find themselves - when they all converge at a weekly underground salon called "Shortbus," a mad world of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality. One of the true sensations of this year's Cannes Film Festival, presents sex and sexuality as never before seen in mainstream entertainment, and promises to be one of the most talked-about films for months - and years - to come.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-10
John Cameron Mitchell has got to be one of our best, modern day visionaries. After Hedwig, I didn't think he could create a piece of art as good but Shortbus delivers. A completely different piece than Hedwig, Mitchell as assembled an extremely talented cast to deliver a real (and I mean REAL) story. Two standouts here are Sook Yin Lee (Sofia) who is a disovery combining earthiness, intelligence, beauty and sexuality. She grounds the whole film and allows the other characters to orbit around her giving us an amazing tapestry of art. Paul Stoval (as James) can communication waves of emotion with the merest facial expression. If I ever meet this man, I will hug him whether he likes it or not. :)
This is the kind of movie that stays with you long after it ends.
cathartic.......2007-06-01
I'd been curious about this film for a while, and after seeing it I can honestly say that it exceeded all my expectations. Once the novelty of the non-simulated sex wears off (which is really fairly quickly), what's left is a film that explores the rich, complex emotional lives of a variety of characters. While superficially the characters are all very different (straight, gay, partnered, single, rich, poor, etc), what they all have in common is that they're all at a crossroads in terms of their sexual behavior, and how it either helps them to connect with other people and their own true selves, or not. To quote one of the actors in the film from the (excellent) documentary in the special features section of the DVD, the sex is really just a metaphor for something else.
The only other real film that I've seen that featured non-simulated sex was "Intimacy", which was a pretentious, dour bore. "Shortbus" is a deep, joyous, cathartic and beautiful film.
Wow.......2007-05-30
I think this movie is daring as to what they show but true to what happens in life. No boundaries are in this movie just like there are none in real life.
Well done film about sex and its affect on our lives.......2007-05-29
I was actually suprised by how nuch I enjoyed Shortbus. It is at turns, funny and sad and of course, brutally frank. The first sexual action made me sit up and think, "okay, here we go .." but after that it all seemed as natural as everything else in the film. The sex was funny and clunky and sexy - but natural in the context of the film. All of the actors should be applauded for their courageousness in completing exposing themselves physically and psychologically. I laughed quite a bit at their drama and was moved by the gentle humor. A lot goes on here, but all of it is worthwhile. The soundtrack also is excellent and highly recommended.
A first--an erotic movie with a plot!.......2007-05-28
Sanrtbus breaks the mold! Other movies of this genre either are rather boring (...) or have plots that are non-existent or downright silly. Shortbus tells the story of several young New Yorkers in a search for love and meaning in their lives. They endure a number of ups and downs during their quest but the movie ends with a satisfying and uplifting conclusion. The movie is not shy about full frontal nudity and includes scenes of actual sex acts, but they fit into the story. By the end you care about the characters and root for them which is a testament to the skill of the mostly unknown and largely amateur cast. I would suggest you try Shortbus--it may not be your bag but it is worth a look. I'd like to see more movies like it.

Sex and the City is based on Candace Bushnell's provocative bestselling book. Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Carrie Bradshaw, a self-described "sexual anthropologist," who writes "Sex and the City," a newspaper column that chronicles the state of sexual affairs of Manhattanites in this "age of un-innocence." Her "posse," including nice girl Charlotte (Kristin Davis), hard-edged Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and party girl Samantha (Kim Cattrall)--not to mention her own tumultuous love life--gives Carrie plenty of column fodder. Over the course of the first season's 12 episodes, the most prominent dramatic arc concerns Carrie, who goes from turning the tables on "toxic bachelors" by having "sex like a man" to wanting to join the ranks of "the monogamists" with the elusive Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Meanwhile, Miranda, Cynthia, and Samantha have their own dating woes.
The second season builds on the foundation of the first season with plot arcs that are both hilarious and heartfelt, taking the show from breakout hit to true pop-culture phenomenon. Relationship epiphanies coexist happily alongside farcical plots and zingy one-liners, resulting in emotionally satisfying episodes that feature the sharp kind of character-defining dialogue that seems to have disappeared from the rest of TV long ago. When last we left the NYC gals, Carrie had just broken up with a commitment-phobic Mr. Big (Chris Noth), but fans of Noth's seductive-yet-distant rake didn't have to wait long until he was back in the picture, as he and Carrie tried to make another go of it. Their relationship evolution, from reunion to second breakup, provides the core of the second season. Among other adventures, Charlotte puzzles over whether one of her beaus was "gay-straight" or "straight-gay"; Miranda tries to date a guy who insists on having sex only in places where they might get caught; and Samantha copes with dates who range from, um, not big enough to far too big--with numerous stops in between.
The third season was the charm, as the series earned its first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series to go along with its Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress (Parker). One of this season's two principal story arcs concerned hapless-in-love Charlotte and her pursuit of a husband; enter (if only...) Kyle McLachlan as the unfortunately impotent Trey. Meanwhile, Carrie has a brief but memorable fling with a politician who's golden, but not in the way she anticipated. She then sabotages her too-good-to-be-true relationship with furniture designer Aidan (John Corbett) by having an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who himself has gotten married. Like I Love Lucy, the series benefited from a brief change of scenery with a three-episode jaunt to Los Angeles, where Carrie and company encountered, among others, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaughn, Hugh Hefner, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
The fourth season is just as smart and sexy as ever, mixing caustic adult wit and sharply observed situation comedy on the mean streets of Manhattan, though this time the quartet of singleton city girls must endure even tougher combat in the unending war of love, sex, and shopping. Carrie finally seems to have found her ideal life partner when she is reunited with handsome craftsman Aidan. But can their relationship survive trial by cohabitation? Meanwhile Charlotte seems to have both her dream Park Avenue apartment and a solution to her marital problems with Trey. But when the subject of babies comes up, everything starts to unravel for her, too. It's not just Charlotte who has baby issues either: after what seems like an eternity of enforced sexual abstinence Miranda is horrified to discover she's pregnant. And as for the sultry Samantha, she's on a quest for monogamy, first with an exotic lesbian artist, then with a philandering businessman, with whom to her utter dismay she just might have fallen in love.
It was a short but sweet fifth season, as HBO's resident comediennes found themselves affected by forces beyond their control--the pregnancies of both Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon. A truncated shooting schedule to accommodate the actresses forced this season to be reduced to a mere eight episodes, but they and creators forged ahead, creating a handful of episodes that if short in content were long on emotion and laughs. Carrie and Miranda wrestled with their solitary lifestyles, albeit with new attachments--Miranda had new baby Brady and single motherhood, while Carrie found herself in the world of publishing as the author of a real-life book of her columns. Charlotte wondered if she'd ever find another man, while Samantha finally got rid of the one that had been vexing her far too much. If the season as a whole felt less than the sum of its parts, those parts were some of the best comedy in the show's history. The season's climactic episode, "I Love a Charade," was one of the series' best episodes ever, equally touching and funny, and grounded the show in an emotional maturity that announced that after all their wild travails, these women had truly grown up.
After a long wait--like the entire fifth season--Carrie is dating again. The sixth season starts with Carrie and her sparkly new potential, Berger (Ron Livingston), trying to leave past relationships and hit it off, with mixed results. Meanwhile Carrie's friends seem to be settling down, relatively speaking. Miranda decides that her affair with TiVo cannot compete when Mr. Perfect (Blair Underwood, at his most charming) moves into her building. Charlotte's feelings for her "opposites attract" boyfriend (Evan Handler) deepen, but they still have a few things to iron out. Most surprising is Samantha's hot relationship with waiter-actor-stud Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis) taking on something resembling love, despite Samantha's best intentions. Before the sixth season started in the summer of 2003, a bombshell hit: it was announced that this would be the finale. But it would be a long season, and these 12 episodes plant the seeds for the final 8 airing the following winter. These dozen episodes illustrate the maturity of the show: there's not a bad one in the bunch, and the show is still flat-out funny. The comedy blends serious points of how we perceive singles, couples, and parents (and the gifts we lavish on the latter two). Carrie's method of celebrating her singlehood is just another gem in this treasure of a series.
With the last eight episodes of the sixth season, HBO's grand sitcom concluded, leaving untold numbers of women--and many men--feeling deprived. The six-year series certainly did not outlast its welcome; the final season is some of the best TV had to offer in 2004. In many ways, the eight episodes served as a single finale, with all four characters approaching a kind of destiny and happiness, the theme of this last half-season (which aired weeks after the first half). Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) continues her romance with Russian artist (Mikhail Baryshnikov), a flippantly arrogant man who's been around the block, but able to supply Carrie's needed desire for magic. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) has settled down with Steve (David Eigenberg), but there is more that will change with her, including her address. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) continues to make baby plans now that the husband slot is filled quite nicely (Evan Handler). Going down the final stretch--and Samantha's (Kim Cattrall) cancer--gives the series a more serious tone, but there's always a jab to tickle the funny bone: Miranda's awkwardness with happiness, Charlotte's latest passion, Carrie typing someplace new, and Samantha getting into Paris Hilton territory. Like any series winding down, there is a wedding, a baby, old faces popping up, and some star-ladened new ones. In the final two-part episode, "An American in Paris," Carrie faces her romantic destiny, but also solidifies herself as a fashion icon, an Audrey Hepburn for 21st-century television. In the penultimate episode, she asks her friends an emotional question: "What if I never met you?" Certainly fans can ask of themselves the same question and reminisce how much better TV became since they first tuned in these four women of the City.
Description
For six seasons Carrie Bradshaw and friends Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte offered us their hilarious, outspoken and outrageous look at dating, mating and relating in the big city. Celebrate the show that explores the day-to-day -- and night-to-night -- world of single women in this, the definitive collector's edition.

sleazy entertainment for fans of "friends." this is one of the worst popular TV shows ever. i hate teh type of people this show portrays. the fantasy is repulsive. if a woman tells me shes a fan of the show i instantly think she's a skank. this show has inspired a generation of tacky skanks.

Sen and the City - The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset).......2007-06-11
I was so excited about getting the Sex and the City series. I heard from friends the show was funny and read great reveiws about the show. I was watching it on TBS and WGN, and realized I was missing so much because of editing. I hesitated purchasing this set from Amazon because of reviews about scratched and damaged DVDs. I bought it anyway. The series is funny and addicting. I loved it, well what I saw of it. My fear came true...Season 2 Disc 2 was highly damaged. Not only did it skip, but it would not play correctly and the images were all on top of each other. I talked to Amazon immediately, and I was able to exchange to series without a problem. The representative was very helpful and I received my new set within a week. Shipping the damaged set back was not a problem using the UPS label. I just dropped it of at the nearest UPS store. Overall, everything went well and I am very satisfied. I have to now find time to watch the series all over again and make sure I don't have any damaged discs in this set.
I'm Too Cheap to Subscribe to HBO..........2007-06-08
Feeling that the SATC episodes airing on my local KTLA station were overly sanitized, I bought this set to give me the whole shebang (I did the same by buying the entire 'Six Feet Under' series on DVD after seeing a few edited episodes on Bravo). I am very happy with the results. I shall nor comment on the show or its plotline(s); that is for someone else to do. As for the comprehensive series archive, this is wonderful. The collection is compact (a 1.5" wide by 11.5" tall lucite slipcase houses an upholstered pink binder housing all the DVDs in cardboard slotted holders. Much easier to find space for than the cutsie 'Six Feet Under' big-block series set. Brief episode descriptions are included.

Shot in sunny Toronto and set to a dreamy score, Lie With Me looks and sounds like an art film, but the end result isn't quite so lofty. The plot is thin and the dialogue superfluous, but no matter--Canada's Clément Virgo (Love Come Down) just wants to turn you on and he has enlisted two attractive, uninhibited young performers to assist in his aims. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith, The L Word) and David (Eric Balfour, Six Feet Under) meet at a party. He's with his girlfriend, but finds himself drawn to her. The feeling is mutual. She's alone, but quickly finds an unattached hipster with whom to have a tryst. David catches her in the act. Instead of turning away, he watches. They start seeing each other immediately afterwards. "I'm not hooked on danger, [I'm] hooked on sex," Leila claims, but she isn't exactly the most trustworthy narrator. She wants a purely physical relationship, while David wants something more. They return to their old lives, but the obsession refuses to die. Based on the novella by Virgo's partner, Tamara Berger, Lie With Me plays like a low-budget cross between Adrian Lyne's overrated 9 1/2 Weeks and Wayne Wang's underrated The Center of the World. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Recommended.......2007-07-01
Lie With Me is more than just lust and sex. David for example doesn't know what he wants they show him with his dad, which we know is an invalid. He has trust issues just like Leila. When he first sees her, I think that he is infautated with her. He helps her at the party when she becomes dizzy, he watches her when she is walking through that wooded area. Basically he is in love with her. When Leila is having sex with that guy he can't help but feel lust for her at first. I mean the guy watches her and then they make a connection. Leila is dealing with the collaspe of her parents marriage and struggling with herself and what she wants. She meets David and she feels actual love i mean she can't be away from him for one second without wanting to feel him. She talks about how when she has sex that she can feel the pleasure inside of her but wants to feel something completely different with someone else. You guessed it that someone is David she wants to love him but she doesn't know how that is why she leaves him. Then she realizes how much she wants to be with him and he pushes her away. She is persistant and then she shows herself to him. In turn he rips out her heart and tells her he doesn't want to be with her, but that is all a lie cause the hurt in his eyes shows through. I think that Leila freaks out because she doesn't know how to comfort him when his dad dies, because you comfort the ones you love in their time of need. Plus i think Eric Balfour has a nice everything in that movie. Both are passionate towards each other even in those scenes when he gets jealous or is still grieving he hurts and the one person who he loves, leaves him. I don't think that he needs a mommy i thinks he needs a lover and someone to show him who he is. Also when they show Leila like having sex form behind i think that she is scared to let someone make actual love to her but David changes that i mean he asks her out on a date. You don't date someone you just want to have sex with. I love this movie i mean yeah theres graphic nudity but its hot and steamy and the actors make David and Leila come to life. Both Eric Balfour and Lauren Lee Smith are the perfect actors to play them.
A range of emotions on film.......2007-06-24
I bought this movie out of curiosity. I love this movie because of the range of emotions many of us experience when one desires and loves. Virgo uses long scenes with few cuts and dialogue to show what's felt when one falls for another. There's lust, attachment, uncertainty, and resolution. The movie shows how one may grow or regress because of these feelings. Rather than lots of dialogue, Virgo uses the nonverbal communication to show what's felt - the trembling of the lips with anticipation, the attachment to another when kissing their arm while asleep, or the misery and disconnect from being without the other. The plot is simple, but many of us have felt the contents of the movie at some point in time. This movie is the first that has delved into the depth of these feelings and put it brillantly on film.
If you're looking for erotic scenes, they're definitely there, and add to the content of the movie. However, if you're thinking this movie is about nothing but sex, you're misled.
Lie With Me will make you think and feel for these characters. Take the 90 minutes; it's worth the time.
Clement Virgo's Lie With Me is self-indulgent porn masquerading as an 'art' film.......2007-06-23
I've learnt to spot the danger signs of an impending bad movie. One of them is when the director is also the screenwriter and producer -- in short, there's no one there to put the brakes on when the film starts to get too self-absorbed. Such is the case with this Canadian indie film that seems to have gone straight to video.
Based on Tamara Berger's novel of the same name (published by the appropriately named Gutter Press), we meet Leila (Lauren Lee Smith), a young woman at a party. She's more than a little tipsy, and looks to be on the scrawny side, dressed clearly with the message that she's there to get laid -- oops, I mean have a good time. One man there is pretty bold about eyeing her, and the pair end up in the bathroom, where he helps her to sober up a little with a drink of water. It almost turns into sex, but his girlfriend calls for him outside and he leaves. He, we find out, is named David (Eric Balfour).
She leaves the party, taking with her Shy Guy (Michael Facciolo), and proceeds to have sex with him outside, up against a chain-link fence. Sitting in his car, watching the pair, is none other than David, along with his girlfriend. David and Leila watch each other getting laid, mimicing each others actions, as it were. At this point, I had a pretty good idea of what this film was going to be about, but as I have this thing about finishing the book or film I start, I didn't turn it off right away.
Eventually, Leila and David meet up again, this time in a public playground, and in a daring moment, she exposes herself to him, making her own interest pretty well known. They move onto his apartment for sex, and the sexual compulsion between the two of them gets going. And in fact that's what most of this film is about -- we're either watching Leila and David going at it like deranged rabbits, or she's letting us know her thoughts and experiences in a voice over that supposed to be titillating and erotic, but sounds more like a bad memoir.
The relationship is pretty predictable -- lust, jealousy phase, playing house together phase, she tries to get it past sex, he withdraws and treats her like trash, they break up, and so on and so forth. Yawn. We've seen this before. While I have to say that the sex at least looks real and honest, the rest of the film isn't that interesting. David, in particular, strikes me as the sort of young man that is fashionable these days -- unshaven, grungy and without any visible means of support. He does take care of an elderly, ailing father, so I guess that's something in his favour. But who in their right mind goes about in dirty jeans without underwear? I had a strong urge to go dip him in a vat of lye.
Leila's not much better. She's perpetually rumpled in skimpy clothing that looks to be ready to fall off at anytime. It's a cheap and sleazy look, and if she's looking for true love or respect from men, it's not a way to really inspire it either. Her personal life isn't that much better -- her parents are going through a divorce, her job is a dead-end job, she seems to spend her free time on the couch watching porn, or partying it up with weed and alcohol. She's not someone I would really care to know in reality either.
In short, this is a couple made for each other. Neither one of them are very responsible, and frankly, he treats her like a piece of meat. I suppose this is what makes this a modern, young adult relationship, sex without strings or emotion. And while the sex does get interesting, I've seen far far better in x-rated film, the only thing this lacks is what is known as the money shot in the trade.
Indeed, Virgo tries to make this as arty as possible, with lots of soft lighting, on location shots in Toronto, use of colour and texture, and I guess that works. But there isn't any sort of plot in this except for the so-called romance between the two leads, and their sexual shenanigans. Oh, there's an attempt or two with the illness of one parent, and the impeding divorce, but the central relationship is so tawdry, the viewer is left with the attitude of so what? by the end.
I don't demand syrupy romance, as long as there is some sort of passion there, but these two are so out of touch with themselves, how can they possibly make it work with each beyond the rubbing together of two body parts? That was the other big complaint with this one -- no one hits a climax that fast, and here it's the slam-bam-thankee-ma'am sort of sex. I kept thinking that she must have had insides of old leather to put up with that.
This is not for children of any age, and I would suspect that most adults would find it a bit on the disturbing side. There is quite a bit of sex in this, with male and female frontal nudity, sex in public, public exposure, sex in public, in cars, with lots of foul language and every form of straight sex that can be performed. There's plenty of drug and alcohol abuse as well. But they do try with a bit of condom use -- after all, this is the age of safe sex, I suppose.
No subtitles, some lackluster trailers for other films, and a voice-over commentary from the director. Nothing really special to watch either.
This is certainly a D-list film. Those who prefer their film to have sex and be honest about it might find a few minutes worth watching, but this 100-minute clunker has nothing else going for it. Those who are looking for a love story will be turned off by the callous brutality and attitudes. It's not a likeable film at all, and I urge you to spend your time with something, anything, else.
Not recommended.
a porn movie disguised as a 'b' movie.......2007-06-21
this movie was about a female sex maniac seeking free rides in the city of angels. there were lot of love making scenes in this hollow movie. the screenplay writer was the original author of that book titled in the same name. if this movie was shot in the '70s timeline, i'd accepted it unconditionally, but regretfully, this is a 2005 movie, aids, hiv and other diseases transmitted from random sex are real. so every time when this young woman involved in free sex, i was just sick to death.
a big question here: what's the point of making this movie?
It's like watching a car wreck, only prettified.......2007-06-10
I saw this movie on cable one night and couldn't help but purchase it on DVD. There were some elements that if you take them one by one, are not great by itself, but taken as a whole, it sorta worked. The 2 main characters were openly flawed; both had their own background stories, but to me, the movie was really about the heroine. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) was your typical hookup girl. She looks like a disheveled model with committment issues, and she has a face that sorta grows on you-- she's not pretty right away. She also doesn't say anything new (how guys don't feel love, all they think about is sex blah blah), but just like what my title suggests, it's something you can't help but watch anyway. Part of that feeling too is that the two protagonists look like they can be a real-life couple. They both look like models, but not typical (annoying) Abercrombie, just good-looking without trying too hard. David (Eric Balfour) did his part of looking good and sexy...I didn't focus on his acting too much; He certainly looked desirable enough that would merit the fuss over him. I really appreciated the scenes that showed sexual restlessness; it's late in the afernoon, there's-nothing-to-do-and-I'm-lonely/frisky and Leila is by herself...It was a relief to see that after a rebuff, Leila didn't go out shopping or hang out with the girls and sputter self-righteous crap.

Light years before political correctness--1983 to be exact--or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, Eddie Murphy, Comedian) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak--a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he's mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There's no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. But, then again, unlike his much nastier, one-sided concert film, Raw, no topic here is safe from Murphy's uproarious tongue-lashings--including the comedian himself. --Dave McCoy

"Your wife's a bigfoot Gus".......2007-06-21
My favorite aunt and uncle rented this when I was 11. I don't know if they thought Eddie would be like "O-Tay" or had a clean act like Bill Cosby but thank God he didn't. What followed were some of the funniest, raunchiest, most quoted lines of comedy of my childhood. From the ice cream man to Aunt Bunny to G.I. Joe and all of the classics, they make you laugh just as much as they did 20+ years ago. I'm glad it's FINALLY out on DVD!
I laughed.......2007-06-10
I laughed, I cried, I give 2 thumbs up!!! Funny as can be, and a classic!!! I recommend this to all comedy lovers!!!
Loved it!.......2007-05-17
I watched this when I was younger, maybe 14, and loved it; didn't get some of it then, but still loved it. Every now and then, I would think of it and wish I could see it again. I am so glad it's been re-released and is on DVD. Eddie Murphy is a funny man no matter what he is doing. I love all his movies. This is when he is only 22 years old and maybe some of his first work, but it is well worth the price to see it.
It shouldn't be seen by younger veiwers because of graphic language, but adults everywhere SHOULD see this and just have a laugh.

Maverick director Michael Winterbottom wondered about the double standard of why novels can have explicit sex scenes and be legit and films could not. So his short film of a relationship based solely on sex and a love for music is the result of that thought. If the definition of a porn film is to shoot actors performing graphic sex scenes for real, then 9 Songs qualifies. It certainly doesn't feel or look like your standard whoopdee-do XXX feature. It's as glossy and low-budget arty as Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People or I Want You. But yeah, Matt and Lisa do everything to each other, and the actors are not "just acting" in some of the sex scenes. No matter how landmark the movie might be, there is not much story here (at least a book with hot sex often has a good story to it). Lisa is an American drifter in London who hooks up with Matt, a scientist who studies glaciers in Antarctica. They have sex and visit nine rock concerts including Franz Ferdinand and The Dandy Warhols. As advertised, you can't find these musical performances anywhere else, but we just see them from way back in the crowd. The film has an essence of how someone can find bliss in another person's body, and the emotional, magical weight that can hold over you. But that spell doesn't last. Since the sex is real, Winterbottom had to cast unknown actors, and they really don't make an impression, especially with the lack of story. --Doug Thomas
Description
Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love affair with Lisa. They meet at a mobbed rock concert in a vast music hall - London's Brixton Academy. They are in bed at night's end. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs. Featuring nine live concert performances not available anywhere else by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand and Michael Nyman. Special features include a Concert Performance-only option.

One damn awful film!.......2007-07-03
Please, dont anyone tell me this is some erotic Romeo and Juliet, dont anyone complain about this film being 'too explicit' this film is bad because.....well it is just plain awful.
Two ugly students, one an American with an accent so anoying that it makes you want to punch her the second an Englishman so boring you wish he would fall down one of those glaciers he is exploring meet up, go to so called 'indie' shows down the Brixton academy, have sex a few times, make a pathetic attempt to take drugs, argue a bit, then brake up. Just about sums up the film.
If this is what anyone realy considers a good plot consider putting a gun to your head and putting yourself out of your misery. So what there are '9 songs' in the film and that is some kind of clever link to the title, so what? If anyone thinks two half starved students engaging in sex is erotic well.....er each to their own I guess.
In this world the director used amature actors, I hear in Road to Guantanimo he did the same. I can only asume that in 9 songs he used the same format because these two planks cant possibly be professional actors. I even watched the extra footage which included an interview with the main actress who is even more anoying in real life than she is when she is making her poor attempt at acting.
Awful film, avoid at all costs. I shudder at the thought of this film as I write this review.
Love and Sex.......2007-06-05
I thought that this film did a great job in depicting modern life, especially that of a young urbanite.
Much has been said in the reviews about the reliance on sex to underline the story and to be honest doesn't sex underpin much of our lives?
I like the fact that the sex is less overt at the start of the film; though it is happening we get only glimpses and teasing rather than a full on show (a likeness to those first exploratory forays with a new lover?), however as the couple relax further into their relationship the sex becomes more selfish and frank. By the final act of the film, as the relationship begins to fail, the sex is at it's most explicit (shown in sun drenched hues, lazy and slow - often the indicator of romance in films), but in this case the realty of boredom and routine.
I enjoyed the film though, like most, I found some of the sex shocking. But it made me think and, it certainly felt like a real place and not some cinematic creation.
Huh?.......2007-05-14
This movie was very hard to follow. The only thing I got was the fact that
she left him at the end. I didn't care for it too much.
so-so.......2007-05-12
Film started off ok but after a bit it wasb very repetative and boring.
could a movie be any duller?.......2007-04-16
A not too good looking guy meets a really skinny girl at a rock concert. He takes her home and they do it. They see another band, and they do it some more. And so it goes on. And then the girl leaves and the guy resumes his job studying antarctic ice. End of story.
What we see: Medium-core porn that never becomes interesting, let alone exciting. A couple of rock bands that sound pretty much the same and look pretty much the same. Oh, and Michael Nyman playing the piano for an enjoyable minute or three.
What we learn: Rock may not be dead, but it's seriously ill. Porn may not be an artform, but it IS a craft and it DOES require skill and the power to convince - and boy, are these 'actors' and director powerless.

Now you can achieve multiple viewings of the best Sex on TV. Winner of Golden Globes for Best TV Series and Best Actress, Sex and the City is based on Candace Bushnell's provocative bestselling book. Meanwhile, Miranda, Cynthia, and Samantha have their own dating woes, few of which can be described on a family Web site. Seinfeld has nothing on Sex and the City when it comes to shallow, self-absorbed characters or coining catch phrases. Episode 2, for example, introduces the term "modelizer": a guy who is obsessed with and will only date models. Some may accuse this series of male bashing. But women, after years of enduring shows with "men behaving badly," will relish the equal time. Some may blanch at the ladies' graphic language and ribald humor, or dismiss some of the situations as unrealistic (Carrie doesn't bat an eye when she discovers that an artist friend surreptitiously videotapes his sexual conquests). Still others will view Sex and the City as documentary. Regardless of your view, this groundbreaking series will have you longing for more. --Donald Liebenson
Customer Reviews:
Oh great irony!!!.......2007-05-31
After making me watch Sex and the City with her, my wife astutely observed that at the heart of this show is a great irony. Touted as a "breakout show" lauding feminism and female empowerment, Sex and the City ironically only managed to portray women as more shallow, superficial, petty and empty-headed than virtually any other television show in history (thank creator Darren Star). Far from challenging whatever backward notions might remain that women are not men's equals, all watching this show would actually do is effectively confirm everything about women that misogynistic chauvinists unfoundedly believe, especially but not limited to the beliefs that women are silly, adolescent, juvenile and totally unencumbered by any burdens of logic, adulthood or maturity. Great progress.
Tiring quickly of Carrie Bradshaw's infantile and meaningless ponderings--"Is New York all about change?" "Are new myths required for singles?" "Is life in Manhattan like a bagel with cream cheese?" Here's one: "Is life really all about perpetually asking meaninglessly vacuous questions and then posing witty but ultimately arbitrary responses?"--one is left to wonder what exactly happened to her in childhood that so effectively stunted her emotional development, seemingly forever cementing her personality at about a sixteen/seventeen-year old emotional age. Are we supposed to pity her that "Big" treats her like a little kid, regardless of the fact that she disturbingly acts like an unbalanced little child? I would say no, especially in light of the fact that in real life "Big" and Carrie would probably not be together in the first place.
Another of the show's many absurdities is the foursome of friends that comprise its main characters. Let's face it folks, unless these girls grew up together (and in the show they didn't), these four women would NOT be friends in real life. They would hate each other.
i have a very important question.......2007-05-24
i have the second, the third and the fith season, but i'm not shure if the first season have spanish spoken or subtitles??
does any one can tell me? thanks
Romantic, witty, and irresistible TV candy.......2007-04-18
In 1998, just as the so-called "king" of all sitcoms was ending, Darren Star (creator of "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills, 90210") created his own - "Sex and the City," very loosely based upon the book by reknowned columnist and socialite Candance Bushnell. The series revolved around the misadventures of Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and her group of self-obsessed girlfriends: successful lawyer Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), whose seemingly constant single status has led many to believe she's homosexual; naive Charlotte (Kristin Davis), whose life revolves around marriage; and Samantha (Kim Cattrall), who may have slept with every man in New York - on numerous occasions. Together, these young, beautiful, and talented women struggle through the late-90s (and eventually early millennium) dating scene, wondering why they're single, what makes men tick, and just looking for love in the Big Apple.
The first season, which aired in 1998, includes 12 delightful episodes. Within the first few enough personality types have been mentioned (such as "Modelizers," those who are addicted to sleeping with models) and enough ridiculous events have occurred to make the series potentially as memorable and quotable as "Seinfeld." The largest story of the first season revolves around Carrie's uncertain relationship with the mysterious Mr. Big ("Law & Order"'s Chris Noth). Carrie knows she loves him, deeply and truly, but does he love her?
"Sex and the City" is one of those series that makes you thank your lucky stars for HBO. The freedom that comes with running a show on HBO is incredible. There is uncensored and restrainless nudity and foul language (which may put off the more timid viewer), an essential part of the show. I imagine that without this, the show wouldn't have been anywhere near as popular or even as good, and on any normal station would probably have flopped. (To see what I mean, watch the HBO version of one episode, and then watch that same episode during the edited TBS re-runs.)
Not that the show's all about getting naked and cursing. There's much more here, particularly a stellar cast. Parker is a heroine for the 90s, and the other girls are normal enough for us to sympathize, but also more than funny enough to keep us entertained. Noth is unquestionably the male highlight, a tall, dark, and devilishly handsome man whose mysterious nature just adds to his charm. The cast is supported by writing that's thoughtful, witty, and creative. Unlike Meredith Grey's episodic musings on "Grey's Anatomy," Carrie Bradshaw's are truly meaningful, and I'm sure legions of women can identify with the problems faced by Carrie and her gang.
All in all, the first season of "Sex and the City," though short (each episode runs a mere 23 minutes on average), is a blast. The characters are down-to-earth and very human, the cast is brilliant, and if the show's attitude toward men is a little chauvinistic, the exemplary writing more than makes up for it. It's romantic, it's fun, it's clever - "Sex and the City" is an irresistible piece of TV candy that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to try a new flavor.
NOTE: If you are at all familiar with the show, or even have a hunch that you'll like it, I'd recommend you shell out the money to purchase the complete series set, a gorgeous package and a MAJOR improvement over the pitiful single-season releases.
Good deal.......2007-04-06
Best bargain out there. Plus, almost every woman loves SATC so it'll be a sure hit if you're clueless as to what to get for that special someone.
season 1.......2007-03-15
sex and the city season 1. Fantastic. The stories are still good. I don't like the format/setup of the first season, or first few episodes, but it gets better from there. Love the show.

It was a short but sweet fifth season for Sex and the City, as HBO's resident comediennes found themselves affected by forces beyond their control--the pregnancies of both Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie) and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda). A truncated shooting schedule to accommodate the actresses forced this season to be reduced to a mere eight episodes, and indeed, you can tell both actresses are expecting. (Carrie's wardrobe became more outlandish and more concealing than usual.) Still, the actresses and creators forged ahead, creating a handful of episodes that if short in content were long on emotion and laughs. Whereas the fourth season found all four grappling with various relationships, the fifth season focused on the perils of being single, with a new intensity lacking in the previous sexcapades. Carrie and Miranda wrestled with their solitary lifestyles, albeit with new attachments--Miranda had new baby Brady and single motherhood, while Carrie found herself in the world of publishing as the author of a real-life book of her columns. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) wondered if she'd ever find another man, while Samantha (Kim Cattrall) finally got rid of the one that had been vexing her far too much, hotelier Richard (James Remar). If the season as a whole felt less than the sum of its parts, those parts were some of the best comedy in the show's history, from Samantha's anointment as the "Michiko Kakutani of vibrators" to Carrie's stressful, one-degree-from-fiasco book launch party. (And fear not, Chris Noth's Mr. Big does pop up now and again.) The season's climactic episode, "I Love a Charade," found all four at the straight wedding of a seemingly gay pal (Nathan Lane) and contemplating their future with a wry, bemused tone. It was one of the series' best episodes ever, equally touching and funny, and grounded the show in an emotional maturity that announced that after all their wild travails, these women had truly grown up. --Mark Englehart

Still great.......2007-06-15
If you want to know, yes, season five was only eight episodes. And HBO did charge the full $49.99 for this season. And I know it didn't have as many important plot details. Meaning that if you skipped this season, you would be okay. But it was still a fun and pretty funny season featuring such moments as Samantha getting a chemical peel and ending up with her facing all burnt and red, Miranda almost going crazy because Brady won't stop crying, Carrie going to San Francisco for her book tour, and Charlotte finding herself in love with her sloppy divorce lawyer. Even though I was upset with the price, I got it on sale. And now, they are ALL on sale pretty much wherever you go. Amazon has pretty good prices. So enjoy.
Not the best, but not as bad as everyone says........2007-05-23
Okay, I don't know what everyone else is talking about, but season 5 really isn't that horrible. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for it, but its worth buying it used for like 10-18 bucks.
Just what i expected........2007-03-19
DVD is brand new... it was just what i expected. Love those sex and the city girls!
Makes a great gift for a young lady.......2007-02-10

With these eight episodes, HBO's grand sitcom concluded, leaving untold numbers of women--and many men--feeling deprived. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) brings a good sense of drama to the show with a breast-cancer scare.
Going down the final stretch--and Samantha's cancer--gives the series a more serious tone, but there's always a jab to tickle the funny bone: Miranda's awkwardness with happiness, Charlotte's latest passion, Carrie typing someplace new, and Samantha getting into Paris Hilton territory. Like any series winding down, there is a wedding, a baby, old faces popping up, and some star-ladened new ones (like creative consultant Julia Sweeney as a nun).
For the last of the DVD sets, the folks behind SATC give their fans a few more DVD extras. As we find out in the near-hourlong 2004 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival Seminar (with executive producer Michael Patrick King, Sarah Jessica Parker, and the writing team), the alternate endings seen here were false leads to throw off the press. Thank goodness--what fan would want one of these endings? More enjoyable is the 11 minutes of deleted scenes from the run of the show. King's expert touches on the commentary are fun to listen to, if a lovefest. And speaking of love, the two farewell tributes are filled with reminiscences and favorite clips, all done with a beautiful fondness for this series. --Doug Thomas

Wonderful DVD. Really good series. A superb acting cast with very real life issues sometimes with an added twist.
This series ended just in time, before cancellation.......2007-04-26
There are only so many men in New York, half being gay, that can be slept with, even for Samantha, who's insides must be made of old shoe leather, so it was fitting that this series died quickly instead of being dragged to death for another year. This was a comedy, although some say the truth is often said in jest, that really showed how truly stupid women are. No wonder men rule the world. Enjoy!
the grand finale.......2007-04-09
In this final set of episodes from the sixth season of SEX AND THE CITY, Carrie and the girls finally grow up, with stories that give a satisfying closure to the complete series. Serious issues, like Samantha's cancer battle, Miranda's move to the suburbs, Charlotte and Harry's quest to adopt a baby; and the Carrie/Big romance are addressed. Fans can settle back and say a final farewell to the ultimate New York glamour girls.
"Let There Be Light" - Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aleksandr (Mikhail Baryshnikov) continue their romance, but is she just another byte on his Google listing? Miranda's ex-boyfriend Robert (Blair Underwood) makes his feelings for her loud and clear, and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) toys with the idea of becoming a blind aid. Will Samantha destroy her relationship with Smith for another chance with Richard? Guest-starring Jason Lewis and James Remar.
"The Ick Factor" - Have we become romance-intolerant? Carrie balks at Aleksandr's idea of soft romance; whilst Steve (David Eigenberg) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) make their love official. Following a gourmet seven-course meal, Charlotte and Harry (Evan Handler) stay up all night with "cordon blues". Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is diagnosed with breast cancer.
"Catch-38" - Why are we should-ing all over ourselves? Carrie contemplates babies with a man who has already been there and done that. Miranda attempts to cope on a honeymoon without television, computers and cell-phones. Samantha goes on a quest to find the best "hot woman doctor".
"Out of the Frying Pan" - Denial...friend or foe? Samantha's cancer battle finally hits home when her hair starts falling out. Miranda decides the best thing for her growing family is a move to Brooklyn; and Charlotte and Harry receive a new addition to their family...a Cavalier King Charles spaniel called Elizabeth Taylor. Guest-starring Dana Ivey and Jonathan Hadary.
"The Cold War" - Carrie and Aleksandr's relationship turns frosty when their cultures clash over friends. In a bid to extend Smith's popularity, Samantha starts spreading gay rumours, only for the whole of New York to brand her a "fag hag".
"Splat!" - Are we too quick to question? Aleksandr wants Carrie to live in Paris with him, an idea that doesn't sit well with Miranda. Meanwhile Carrie gets the uncomfortable job of setting up her former boss Enid on a blind date; and one of New York's most notorious playgirls gets the ultimate comeuppance. Guest-starring Candice Bergen, Wallace Shawn and Kristen Johnston.
"An American Girl in Paris (Part Une)" - Carrie packs up her collection of Manolos and leaves New York behind for a new beginning with Aleksandr. But will the City of Lights welcome our heroine?
"An American Girl in Paris (Part Deux)" - And, in the end...

The third season was the charm for one of HBO's gold standard series, which earned its first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series to go along with its Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress (Sarah Jessica Parker). The writing is as sharp as ever, with more trendy product placement than a Bret Easton Ellis novel and ribald banter that's a cross between the Algonquin Round Table and the Friars Club. One of this season's two principal story arcs concerned hapless-in-love Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and her pursuit of a husband; enter (if only...) Kyle McLachlan as the unfortunately impotent Trey. Meanwhile, sex columnist Carrie has a brief but memorable fling with a politician who's golden, but not in the way she anticipated. She then sabotages her too-good-to-be-true relationship with furniture designer Aidan (John Corbett) by having an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who himself has gotten married.
"Do we need drama to make a relationship work?" Carrie muses at one point. Sex and the City needs drama to make it work, and Parker and Cynthia Nixon (as career woman Miranda), this ensemble's better half, give the show its pulsating heart as they wrestle with commitment and, in the episode "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," sadder-but-wiser breakups. On the lighter side, the sexual dalliances of "rude and politically incorrect" Samantha (Kim Cattrall) provide great fodder for comedy. Like I Love Lucy, the series benefited from a brief change of scenery with a three-episode jaunt to Los Angeles, where Carrie and company encountered, among others, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaughn, Hugh Hefner, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. At its best, to quote one character, Sex and the City is "sharp, edgy, brutal at times, always a little juicy." It may be "very New York," but the sex and relationship issues it tackles are universal. For its devoted fans, the release of this 18-episode, three-disc set is, to quote Gellar's clueless Hollywood junior development exec, "chick flick big." --Donald Liebenson

Character development, multiple story arcs, and four fabulous women.......2007-04-28
*Possible spoilers within.*
Though it had grown progressively better through its first two seasons, the third season of "Sex and the City" was by far the best yet. That's because the show stopped depending so much on placing the characters in outrageous situations and began also paying attention to the characters themselves, creating numerous story arcs as well. By the end of the third season, each of the characters had developed, but realistically so.
Season Three, comprised of 18 episodes airing from June to October 2000, thrust the girls into the new millennium. Still recooperating from her second breakup with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) reluctantly returns to dating, first with a charming politician (John Slattery) before falling into her first serious relationship since Big with an irresistible all-American furniture designer named Aidan (John Corbett). But then, just as things are going perfectly, none other than Mr. Big himself reappears in Carrie's life, leading to a chain of events that will hurt more than just our favorite sex columnist.
The supporting characters get their share of storylines as well. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) finally finds a serious relationship when she meets Steve (David Eigenberg), an adorable and sweet bartender. Their relationship is always on the edge, however, thanks to Miranda's tendency to self-destruct when things start going well. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) gains a little morality and self-control (but just a little) while she deals with the fact that she's getting older. Then there's Charlotte (Kristin Davis), who decides that this is the year she's going to get married. It turns out she's right. So who's the lucky man? None other than the peerless Kyle MacLachlan (of "Blue Velvet" and "Twin Peaks" fame, among much else). But Charlotte is shocked to find herself loosening up when she realizes marriage isn't all she'd thought it would be.
The work of the series' writers really made this season the show's finest yet. The girls' antics had been enough to support the show through the past seasons, but they would only support them for so long. The writers realized this, and they developed enough story arcs and difficulties to re-shape the characters and keep viewers on the edge of their seat. Not to worry, though: Carrie kept on answering those questions that continue to haunt women around the world. And while the season's multiple storylines keeps the season feeling fresh from start to finish, the writers went above and beyond when they moved Carrie and the gang to L.A. for a couple of episodes. It was a refreshing change from the increasingly dreary streets of New York, and included wonderful guest appearances from Vince Vaughn, Hugh Hefner, Carrie Fisher, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Matthew McConaughey.
Season Three was the show's best season yet, thanks to excellent work on the writers' parts and a fabulous guest cast. As the season finale came to its close, Carrie was reunited with Big yet again. This time, however, their meeting ended with smiles and hope rather than tears and disappointment, leaving the millions of "Sex and the City" addicts feeling anxious and optimistic about what promised to be a superb fourth season.

After a long wait--like the entire fifth season--Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is dating again. The sixth season of the popular HBO show starts with Carrie and her sparkly new potential, Berger (Ron Livingston), trying to leave past relationships and hit it off. The results are mixed (up to Berger's memorable exit), but the good news is Carrie is at it again, and a new love interest can be found in the member of a wedding party, an old high school flame (David Duchovny), or an über-famous painter (Mikhail Baryshnikov). As Carrie plays the field, her friends seem to be settling down, relatively speaking. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) decides that her affair with TiVo cannot compete when Mr. Perfect (Blair Underwood, at his most charming) moves into her building. Charlotte's (Kristin Davis) feelings for her "opposites attract" boyfriend (Evan Handler, perhaps fans' most-loved boyfriend) deepen, but they still have a few things to iron out. Most surprising is Samantha's (Kim Cattrall) hot relationship with waiter-actor-stud Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis) taking on something resembling love, despite Samantha's best intentions.
Before the sixth season started in the summer of 2003, a bombshell hit: it was announced that this would be the finale. Fans, just getting over the truncated fifth season (due to half the cast getting pregnant), were beside themselves. But it would be a long season, and these 12 episodes plant the seeds for the final 8 airing the following winter. These dozen episodes illustrate the maturity of the show: there's not a bad one in the bunch, with things like old flames Mr. Big (Chris Noth), and Steve (David Eigenberg) popping in with deeper resiliency. And the show is still flat-out funny. Berger is the most intrinsically humorous of Carrie's beaus (his introduction to Prada is a classic), Jarrod's earnest streak on Samantha gets her flabbergasted in the giddiest ways, and Charlotte's attempt to convert to Judaism is right in character. The touchstone episode is "A Woman's Right to Shoes," in which Carrie loses her prized and expensive Manolo Blahniks at a party. The comedy blends serious points of how we perceive singles, couples, and parents (and the gifts we lavish on the latter two). Carrie's method of celebrating her singlehood is just another gem in this treasure of a series. --Doug Thomas

Here's one: "Is life really all about perpetually asking meaninglessly vacuous questions and then posing witty but ultimately arbitrary responses?"--one is left to wonder what exactly happened to her in childhood that so effectively stunted her emotional development, seemingly forever cementing her personality at about a sixteen/seventeen-year old emotional age.

I love, love, love Season 6. We finally see Steve and Miranda get together and Charlotte and Harry get married. Samant
