Description
Set in the 1960's, Easy Listening is a masterful period piece, with the feel of old happy commercials. Burt makes a living playing trumpet in an elevator music orchestra. At home he's hostage to routine phone calls by his crazy ex and a hefty alimony he owes her. Enter Linda, a fresh-faced flutist with a passion for instrumental pop. Though she is half Burt's age, Burt is smitten and tries to impress her. Linda in turn is impressed by his musical talent and talks him into coaching her as she prepares for the arrival of a professional orchestra scout. It turns out to be Linda, however, who coaches Burt to loosen up and rid himself of misery, bringing out a musical talent in him that no one else had realized.

Rod Stewart's various incarnations--Rod the Mod, Rod the Rocker, Rod the Crooner, and so on--are on display on Live at Royal Albert Hall. In what amounts to a 90-minute singalong with his adoring fans, the raw-voiced singer (now huskier than ever) reprises selections from throughout his long and fruitful career, from his early '70s solo albums, including the best of the lot, 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story, through his surprisingly skillful (and successful) new millennium emergence as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Despite his having released three CDs of standards by the time of this good-looking, great-sounding concert, only five of the 17 tunes come from them, including a version of "As Time Goes By" with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (lush orchestration notwithstanding, there's no disguising the fact that both singers are more at home singing rock or pop than jazz, big band, or cabaret material). Much more emphasis is put on early Stewart material like "You Wear It Well," "Reason to Believe," and "Maggie May," songs that were and are beautifully limned by acoustic guitars, violin, and mandolin. Good buddy, former bandmate (in the Faces and the Jeff Beck Group), and current Rolling Stone Ron Wood plays guitar on a couple of numbers (including a raucous "Stay with Me"), and while Stewart does insist on giving "Hot Legs" a spin, at the age of 59 he at least has the good sense to keep "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" under wraps. A brief tour documentary is the principal DVD bonus feature. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great Concert.......2007-05-07

This Rod Stewart concert at Royal Albert Hall has to be one of his best performances I've seen. There were no aspects of the show that I did not totally enjoy. You felt like you were sitting up front in the audience!

5 out of 5 stars What A Fabulous Concert!.......2007-04-24

Rod Stewart's "One Night Only: Live At The Royal Albert Hall" is one fabulous and remarkable concert. Imagine a venue that caters to famous and legendary singers, one of them was an icon of a singer Frank Sinatra. This stunning concert is a showcase of Rod Stewart's big hits as ROD THE MOD, and his bestselling Great American Songbook series as ROD THE FAB (the title I coined - short for fabulous interpreter of the Great American Songbook). He describes his GAS: Volume I as "an album that calms you down." He added that recording it was a great challenge and he was so thrilled with the outcome. According to him, "it's so impossible for him to run out of these songs from the Great American Songbook." He further states that he "could probably make six albums of these songs quite easily." He already made four volumes, which are all bestsellers. I only hope that there would be an upcoming Volume V. It's a common knowledge that he truly enjoyed this experience so much and understands how much it means to him and to his fans as well. And he also wants it to always remain something special. The Songbook albums have meant a great deal to him and thinks that singing these songs has made him a better singer one can only hope.

I must admit that I only became a fan of Rod the Fab when he recorded the standards from the Great American Songbook, though there were occasional hits he sung that really appeal to me like "Reason To Believe," "I Don't Want To Talk About It" and "You're In My Heart." I've watched one of his earliest television interviews with Katie Couric while promoting his GAS series. Ms. Couric asked him why he "doesn't look his age." I guess he was sixty then, and he declared that some of his "secrets of looking young are . . . lots of music, wine and soccer."

His performances are in every way sparkling and dazzling as the brightest evening star, and so electrifying as lightning! He has the backing of a large orchestra and well-rehearsed musicians to make this concert the greatest gig of the year! He shares some interesting anecdotes, one of which is about his first guitar. His Dad gave him a guitar for no apparent reason and told him: "Why don't you take this up, there's money in this." And the rest, of course, is history.

While I'm thoroughly delighted with the concert in its entirety, my favorite parts are all his performances on the Great American Songbook. On these presentations, the London-born singer looking so dapper in his pinstriped outfit brings new life to these chestnuts with his excellent showmanship and his fabulous stage presence.

My highlights:
"They Can't Take That Away From Me" - beautiful sax solo by Katja.
"Blue Moon" - the guitar solo is absolutely breathtaking!
"As Time Goes By" - an amazing duet with Chrissie Hynde with exquisite solos on violin by Janet and sax by Katja.
"For Sentimental Reasons" - a lovely performance.
"Reason To Believe" - one of the most notable performances.
"I Don't Want To Talk About It" - a duet with Amy Belle who has a very expressive voice.

There's no doubt that Rod Stewart is such a total performer and he could command your undivided attention whether you're listening to his CDs or watching his DVDs such as this one.

What a fabulous concert!

5 out of 5 stars Get it!.......2007-04-19

Get it. No need for detailed reviews. You won't regret it. The best in my collection. Not only is it jam packed with all Rod's hits but it's a fun and sexy concert.

This is one of the best concert DVD's I have ever seen. All of Stewarts best. A new star that Rod discovered that he does a duet with is THE BEST THING TO COME ALONG IN DECADES!!! Amy Belle is her name. Her singing actually sent shivers down my spine.I'm not kidding. And she's a knockout!!!

Amazon.com essential video

Frank Sinatra had sung on television and even hosted variety specials and series, but when he strutted through the empty hallways of NBC studios, took a stool next to a lonely microphone, and belted out the opening lines to "I've Got You Under My Skin," it was a TV revelation. Here was the mature, confident, at times even swaggering saloon singer and balladeer in a solo showcase: literally, the man and his music. The mix of classic tunes ("I Get a Kick Out of You," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "Witchcraft"), key songs from his 1950s reinvention ("Come Fly with Me," "You Make Me Feel So Young"), and 1960s standards ("My Kind of Town," "This Is All I Ask") is mirrored in an effective medley anchored by "It Was a Very Good Year," giving us a brief tour of his career from the bobby-soxer heartthrob crooning hopeful ditties ("Young at Heart") to the reflective maturity of the artist in 1965 (the melancholy "Last Night When We Were Young"). Vocally, Sinatra is in excellent form--clear and bold, with the dexterity of his 1950s recordings now colored by phrasing at once thoughtful and seemingly spontaneous--and the combination of top-notch arrangements and impeccably chosen material makes this special Sinatra's finest televised hour. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sinatra's First Special Is A Classic........2007-06-17

"AMan And His Music" was the first of several television specials Frank Sinatra did between 1965 and 1982. Running 50 minutes, this special has Frank in top form. It delivers what the title promises - no gimmicks, no comedy routines, no special guests. Just Frank, his music and his audience.

The show starts off with a rousing rendition of "I've Got You Under My Skin", which sets the mood for the evening quite well. Frank then leads us on a musical journey through his long and happy career. Among, the highlights, "I Get A Kick Out Of You" exudes style and flair, "Nancy" is tender and graceful, and "My Kind Of Town" is a wild good time.

We cut to some lovely autumn scenery, as Frank performs a medley of hits from all different stages of his career built around "It Was A Very Good Year". Featuring haunting renditions of" Young At Heart", "The Girl Next Door" and "Last Night When We Were Young", this is Frank at his finest. He is connected and lost in the music, but at the same time focused and hitting all the right emotions.

After the nice but forgettable "This All I Ask", Frank gets back into his upbeatr mode and does a fantastic runthrough of his biggest hits - "Come Fly With Me", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "I've Got The World On A String", "Witchcraft" and "You Make Me Feel So Young", all performed brilliantly. The show closes with a grogeous rendition of "Put Your Dreams Away", which was Frank's signature tune until "My Way" came out four years later.

Overall, this is a fantastic special. My only complaint is that the sound and picture quality could have been greatly improved. Other than that, I highly recommend this dvd.

4 out of 5 stars Nice overview but... .......2007-03-31

I wish they'd release a DVD of the clips from his shows in the 1950s from the 1950-1952, 1957-1958 and 1958-1960 shows, some of which were used as part of a live concert in recent years. I think "Vintage Sinatra" has been shown on PBS but not released on DVD, and I don't remember how much narration was in that one.

These videos are good "Reprise Era" material.

5 out of 5 stars FRANK REFLECTS ON HIS MUSIC AND CAREER.......2007-01-12

What's interesting about this special is that unlike many singers, Frank didn't have a guest and he sang live as opposed to pre-recording a bunch of big production numbers. After all, it was about him and the music!

5 out of 5 stars A great performance, despite the limitations.......2006-04-28

Many have questioned why this "film" hasn't been remastered. The simple reason is it was shot on videotape, not film. This special, and the ones that followed, were taped at NBC Studios in Burbank(when Frank leaves his car at the beginning of the show, that's the Tonight Show studio on his right!), along with "The Dean Martin Show", "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In", "The Hollywood Squares", and many more. Everything shot at the Burbank complex, up until just a decade or so ago, was done on videotape, not film. Unfortunately even broadcast quality videotape deteriorates over time. My guess is that this special probably wasn't preserved on digital disc, until sometime in the 1980's. If you look at the DVD's of the Dean Martin Show, or "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson", you'll see that some of those master tapes have deteriorated as well. It's a shame, but those were the cost cutting limitations that NBC offered at the time. Also note that this special was shot on three different nights(hence the canned laughter at Sinatra's jokes). The first installment was November 8th, 1965. Sinatra returned at two different days that week to finish off the performance (it took at least a day to tear down and rebuild each of those elaborate sets). It was broadcast on Thanksgiving night of '65. I have read that Frank was suffering from a severe cold the night he taped the "I've Got You Under My Skin" segment, and was very cranky to the directors, producers and everyone else in the studio that night. Despite it all, he turned out a top notch performance, and I for one, am glad we have it, considering what NBC did to the first decade of Johnny Carson's material!

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is ... a great special now on dvd!.......2005-12-13

This is the begining of the Sinatra's Reprise video collection. It is a great dvd! The songs on here are great: Come fly with Me, I've Got You Under My Skin and more. Also, the medley is a welcome part on the early dvd's.

The sound quality could be better. However, I assume the sound is consistent to the way in which it was originally aired. I'd prefer to get the original product vs. an overdone Hollywood reproduction.

This is Frank at his best! I own them all and this is one of the best. For a true fan this is a must. I also suggest Frank with Ella and Carlos Jobim.

5 out of 5 stars IT COULD NOT BE BETTER! WHAT TALENT!.......2006-10-31

This concert could not get any better. Both artists are
pure perfection. This is one of the few concerts were
"Aznavour/Minnelli" are so "magical" that this is a DVD
worth owning and is MORE than just a film of the concert.
You can feel the excitement and magic and you even forget
you are watching a DVD! The only sad note is that I wish
this was "LIZA" today. But I only wish her the best of
continued success. This is a POSITIVE AND OVERWHELMING
EXPERIENCE FOR ALL...and at the end
you can feel the friendship and even the love between these
two actors/singers.

I simpy wish they would release ALL OF LIZA'S FILMED SHOWS, like the one on "FOX Studio" that has been butchered to
an hour and should be running 90 minutes. It was a special
many, many years ago either on "SHOWTIME" OR "HBO."

I think it is time, after "all the laughting" about "Ms.
Minnelli" for all interested in the arts to get to see
"Liza" at her very top and understand this is what made
her famous. There are at least two more concerts filmed
that need to be released. Write "FOX STUDIOS."After watcing this anyone will understand the meaning of true
"genius!"

5 out of 5 stars Palais Des Congres Des Paris - Featuring Charles Aznavour & Liza Minnelli.......2005-10-18

We were very pleased with the quality of the video and the concert is just fabulous. A wonderful gift for any Aznavour-Minnelli fan.

5 out of 5 stars Good friends, Perfect match; Formitable !!.......2005-02-23

Liza and Aznavour are long time friends. And it is very exciting to see them perform on a same stage !!
Aznavour's soothing and Parisien style with Liza's engergetic and NY feel, are a perfect match !!
Actually, Liza had just attend Aznavour's 80 anniversary concert last year, and they are still a hit !!

5 out of 5 stars Liza at her best.......2004-12-01

Everything that is good about Minnelli is evidenced here. Her dance during Steppin' Out, though a bit clunky and less smooth than the movie version, is pulled off because of her remarkable charisma and showmanship, the sheer joy in performing that she conveys. A special delight is her bluesy, gut-wrenching version of I Love a Piano. She nails this number like nobody has, and does the whole thing reclining on an easy chair! This DVD captures the beauty and sex appeal that Minnelli radiates, despite her unconventional looks (dig her great legs!). Like her mother, the power of talent and personality transcends the form (though her mother was more conventionally attractive). Sadly, like her mother, she seems to be buckling under the pressures of life's circumstance. Fortunately, we have videos like this that capture the glory of her great moments--I hope there are more in the future of this uniquely gifted woman.

5 out of 5 stars The BesT Liza Live DVD!.......2004-11-24

A treasure to have forever captured on film, Liza in her prime, great voice and great shape!! It's quite a moving experience to see and hear the two legendary perfomers sing a fantastic arrangement of some of the most beautiful and memorable love songs from the American songbook! You'll be glad you purchased this wonderful live concert experience on DVD!!! There is no other filmed concert that captures such a "relaxed" Liza, having such a great time on stage! She and Mr. Aznavour are both at the TOP of their game!

Daniel O'Donnell is better than wonderful and yes he is handsome and Mary Duff is beautiful. If you are a DOD fan then you must have this one. I agree they showed the audience quite a bit but I enjoyed seeing everyone so "into" these songs. This DVD does not have the fun stuff that I like between DOD and MD but I understand that. You could tell for sure that his heart was really into this show. It was nice seeing his mother and Majella there too.

5 out of 5 stars Marianne shines in this live lecture.......2006-02-20

This live lecture originally aired on PBS is an excellent companion to any one of Marianne's books (some of my favorites being "Healing the Soul of America" and "Everyday Grace"). What is unique about Ms. Williamson as an author and lecturer is her transparency. She never ceases to cull from her own foibles and personal experience in order to demonstrate the wisdom of spiritual laws. Usually a lecturer on the modern spiritual text, "A Course in Miracles", Marianne is easily able to move out of a strict Course perspective and apply the wisdom of religious thought into our lives. Though some Course purists have created a bit of controversy around whether or not she should be using Course philosophy without really delving into it's unique and controversial metaphysics, I have learned much from her insights. She remains grounded and human all the while touting lofty spiritual ideals. This DVD is a light in the religious/spiritual/self-help community.

5 out of 5 stars Live Lecture Conveying Hope and Magic.......2005-11-28

"Fairytales are actually metaphysical information given to all of us if we actually look at what they say." - From the DVD

According to author Marianne Williamson, the very thought that miracles CAN happen is an extraordinary empowerment, if we allow it to be. This concept is much like the "magic wands" of fairytales like Cinderella whereby mice turn into coachmen, pumpkins into coaches, and rags into ball gowns.

In the DVD Everyday Grace, Williamson gives a 75-minute live lecture explaining why humanity needs to evolve beyond where it is and how miracles can play a vital part in individual and corporate transformation.

The current age reflects a mechanistic, Newtonian worldview where the earth is as a large machine where we have very little power to change objects and events outside ourselves. Echoing modern theories of Quantum Physics, Williamson asserts that when we observe and perceive something differently, the object itself changes. She goes onto to say that our species is no longer well adapted for survival because we fight too much. We must evolve past the place where the only way we fix things is to destroy them-much like the mindset found in modern medicine.

In the Everyday Grace DVD, Williamson goes on to share five "magic wands" that can help us tap into a power that is in us, but not of us-that can do what we cannot do for ourselves. They are:

Wand #1 - Consider the possibility a miracle could happen here.

Wand #2 - We are the angels we've been waiting for. Breakthroughs happen in our lives when breakthroughs happen within us.

Wand #3 - Every thought of judgment blocks the Light. If we knew enough about almost anyone we could, on some level, forgive almost anything.

Wand #4 - The end is inherent in the means. If we make "the goal" paramount, we will be tempted in various ways to compromise our integrity, exploit relationships, and engage in unethical behavior.

Wand #5 - Sacred silence rights the Universe. Every spiritual and philosophical tradition encourages prayer, the cultivation of stillness, meditation, etc.

Saying that the 21st century belongs to the "Fairy Godmother", Williamson describes the symbolism of Cinderella, applying the metaphor to our evolving consciousness. Stressing that our thoughts create reality, she admonishes us that the wars will stop outside only when they stop INSIDE. In fact, "today's newspaper is just a reflection of yesterday's thoughts" but we can apply the five "magic wands" to create miracles in both the world and ourselves.

This DVD also includes an extensive interview with Marianne Williamson, covering topics such as:

* Her early career
* Her favorite book
* The writing of the book Everyday Grace
* Her greatest achievement
* The greatest challenge in the world

She says that "you can't touch an audience without the truth of your own journey" and Williamson has consistently lived out this ideal through her books and lectures. If you'd like a good dose of hope and the means to create a magical, beautiful world, the Everyday Grace DVD shows the way.

5 out of 5 stars Despite Some Rough Points, One Of The Best Sinatra Concert Videos Available........2007-06-16

Since there is so little official video footage of Frank Sinatra live in concert, a dvd like "In Concert At The Royal Festival Hall" is a welcome treat for fans. Recorded in 1971, this show was filmed not long before Frank retired later that year (of course, it didn't last long).

This is not a perfect show. Frank at times seems a bit lost and disconnected, and even flubs his line quite a few times (a trait that would plague Sinatra frequently in his final years), though it may or not have been in jest. Also, the sound quality and visual quality borh could've used some much needed sprucing up.

These minor quibbles aside, this is a fantastic show. It starts off with an introduction from Princess Grace Of Monaco (formerly screen legend Grace Kelly) before Ol' Blues Eyes comes out with a swinging new arrangement of "You Make Me Feel So Young". Next comes a tight, energetic version of "Pennies From Heaven".

In a rare occurence, "I've Got You Under My Skin" is one of the lower poitn s of the show. This version lacks energy and Sinatra messes up his timing and he really phones it in here. Things continue to slag a bit with his rendition of The Beatles' "Something", a song thast 8 years later that receive a much better treatment from Frank that rivaled the original.

Things begin to pick up with a fun version of "The Lady Is A Tramp". Frank flubs a line ("Anyone else?", he asks, questioning his faux pas), but he still owns the song. Next comes the arguable highlight of the show, as Frank sings his songs for losers.

First is "I Get Along Without You Very Well", which Frank does beautifully. Franks draws just the right emotion and gives the song his all. Jimmy Webb's "Didn't We" is next. A second-rate composition it is, but Frank makes it work.

Next comes a true classic, as Frank sings the "Daddy Of These Types Of Songs", and sinks into a moving "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)". The show, however, falters with the next number, as the pompous "I Will Drink The Wine" has Frank attempting to connect with the young "flower child" crownd and failing.

Things pick up with a gorgeous rendition of "I Have Dreamed" from "The King And I". Frank sings this one perfectly. "My Kind Of Town" and "My Way" finish things off on a high note.

Overall, this is not a perfect show, but a great show that is owrth having in your collection. Hopefully, many more great Siantra concerts (such as 1982's wonderful "Concert For The Americas") will find their way to dvd.

4 out of 5 stars FRANK JUST BEFORE 'RETIREMENT'.......2007-05-26

Frank's voice is rough at times, but he knows how to use the mike like nobody else did to camaflage it or use it for poignancy. Good selection of songs from the Great American Song Book including 'I Get Along Without You Very Well' and 'I Have Dreamed.' Nice version of 'Something in the Way She Moves." Sometimes the band is uncommony loud which Frank humourously comments on. Look for Tony Bennet in the audience at the end when the camera pans left.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING!!.......2006-04-27

FRANK SINATRA IN ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL IS WONDERFUL. HES OLDER,THEREFORE MORE MELLOW AND COMFORTABLE WITH HIMSELF. TO ME, HIS SINGING AND STAGE PERSONNA ARE EXCELLENT! HE IS SO SEXY MORE THAN EVER. LAUGHING AND JOKING. AND WHEN HE FORGETS THOSE LINES OR ACTS LIKE HE DOES (THIS MAY BE PART OF THE ACT)HE COMES ACROSS AS SO HUMAN AND FUNNY. MY FAVORITE IS "I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL" THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND WELL PERFORMED IVE EVER EXPERIENCED. HE WAS TRULY A GENIUS AT PERFORMING. ANOTHER WONDERFUL ONE WAS "I WILL DRINK THE WINE" THIS SONG WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN GOOD IF NOT PERFORMED BY THIS MAN BUT IT JUST FIT HIM. I LOVED IT! I DONT KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE BUT THIS GUY STILL GETS "UNDER MY SKIN". AND THAT PRINCESS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND HER SPEECH JUST TAKES YOU TO FAIRY-TALE LAND SO TO SPEAK. SINCE MOST OF US DONT RUB ARMS WITH ROYALTY. SHE WAS WONDERFUL TOO!! YOU MUST GET THIS IF YOU ARE A SINATRA FAN OR EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT! EXCELLENT!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars sad state of Sinatra on DVD..........2005-12-07

I see that a deluxe five DVD set of Barbra Streisand's TV specials has been released recently... So why doesn't Warner/Reprise do the same thing for Frank Sinatra's classic TV specials? Could "The Family" be involved perhaps...? Sure, they can get behind a phony "Sinatra at the Palladium" multi-media extravaganza where you watch 20-foot projected videos of Sinatra singing accompanied by a live orchestra thanks to "unprecedented access to Frank Sinatra's film archives"... but they can't seem to get Sinatra's video performance legacy released appropriately on DVD...

The classic 1960s, 70s, and 80s musical TV specials (A Man and His Music Part I & II, Sinatra+Ella+Jobim, The Main Event, etc...) are still being sold as individual DVDs at full price ($15-$20 each). They are each about 50 minutes long with "stereo" sound (actually "2-channel mono" I think) with no bonus features whatsoever, packaged in flimsy plastic and cardboard cases.

Why don't they compile all 9 of the Reprise Collection Sinatra TV specials in a 3-DVD package with 3 specials per DVD? Price it at about $40-$50, include some bonus goodies (there must be hours of stuff in the vaults... better go with 4 DVDs!) and give this material the deluxe, classy treatment it deserves.

Surely this would sell well enough to justify the minimal investment required (just repackaging/remastering the same old material for the most part). Wouldn't a DVD set like this be a better 90th birthday "limited edition" release than reissuing the sub-standard Duets CDs again? And what about all the amazing unreleased audio that remains stagnating in the vaults...? Get with the program, folks!

I am truly very happy for all you Babs fans though! You're "the luckiest people in the world..."

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed in quality.......2005-05-06

Don't get me wrong I am a huge Sinatra fan....but....the quality of the video and audio were poor at best for today's technology. I found the video equivalant to copying an old VCR tape to DVD and the Audio was simulated stereo. I also bought a second one and the quality is the same. I definately do not recommend this if you are looking for a concert experience.

3 out of 5 stars pointless frenetic editing.......2007-06-15

Frenetic editing hurts these things so often. Why do they let them do it? What is the point? This is supposed to be a jazz/funk concert, as opposed to a punk/rock concert...so why allow this kind of crazy, hurried/harried
cutting back and forth from camera to camera to camera???

Makes no sense.
In the future, can you PLEASE leave the camera on a performer for longer than THREE SECONDS? Is that too much to ask?

Sound not right/clear between numbers. Can't figure out/understand what Candy is saying at all.

Look, I love Candy Dulfer; she is clearly a talented sax player (could have done with her singing less, by the way), but her band is so damn loud that you can hardly make-out her own playing. Can't this sound "problem" be solved? Yes, her band is quite good, but I mainly bought this to be able to hear (AND SEE) HER PLAY.

As someone else stated, the bonus tracks are better than the main concert.

Finally, do I regret buying this DVD? Nope, because I dig the chick (in spite of the above objections.)

5 out of 5 stars Live at Montreux!!!.......2007-04-02

The music on this DVD is awesome. Funky grooves throughout. The extra features are from an earlier appearance at Montreux that are just as good and solid tunes you will want to hear. A great DVD for a party...audio and video enjoyment.

3 out of 5 stars Candy CORN.......2006-10-19

While this gorgeous woman can play a mean sax, she and her band lack true soul. They come off as technical robots attempting to be funky. There are far better sax players in this genre. They are akin to a rich kid raised in the Hamptons TRYING to be a funky soul brother from Philly. It just lacks integrity. My advice, look to other sax players. Even though this was recorded in 2002 it comes off as CORNY not FUNKY. "Wave your hands from left to right" come on...

5 out of 5 stars Woolyman.......2006-08-28

As the saying goes, If you want SAX, call Candy...... She never disappoints. Next best thing to being there LIVE..

4 out of 5 stars 3-Star feature surpassed by a 5-Star bonus performance.......2006-02-11

This is essentially a compilation of two Candy Dulfer appearances at the Montreaux Jazz Festival: the featured show from July of 2002, and the bonus performance from July of 1998. Both took place at the famed Auditorium Stravinsky and were filmed for television. I consider Candy to be the funkiest white chick on the planet, taking over that distinction from Teena Marie, and her jammin' sax tunes have impressed me since "Sax-A-Go-Go" came out in 1993. This is a very good DVD for Candy fans or those who appreciate funky sax-oriented jazz (who will likely enjoy the bonus performance better) although, as with most "Jazz Fest" events, the artists don't get to spend very much time on-stage.

Sorry to say, I wasn't so impressed with the 2002 portion of this DVD, mainly because Candy's music leaned toward vocal-oriented tunes as opposed to instrumentals which highlight her sax as the voice. As for the vocalizing, Candy was pretty good, and Monique Baker added a complementary soulful edge. Another nice dimension was the excellent vocal dexterity of keyboardist Roger Happel (sort of a less-boyish version of Justin Timberlake), but his singing was a rare respite from the rest of the "oh-oh-oh-yeah" or "gimme-the-funk" repetition (mildly annoying). Candy's band, the seven-member Funky Stuff, is pretty tight throughout, although the sound mixing is off at times, rendering Peter Lieberom's sax and Ulco Bed's guitar a little thin. My favorite numbers were "Longin' For the Funk" and "Sax-A-Go-Go," and the encore number rocked. [The eight tracks have a running time of 54 minutes]

The 1998 performance: BETTER IN EVERY WAY (both music and production value) and I'm guessing that this wasn't the feature because it was a bit shorter and took place four years before the other one. Five of the Funky Stuff members were the same, with the different musicians appearing in the rhythm section and as the third keyboardist (in place of the extra vocalist). Candy's sax was front and center virtually all the way, and ALL the songs jammed. The awesome cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me," which gave many of the band members time in the spotlight, was a great departure from the up-tempo repertoire. Whenever I watch this, I go straight to "Bonus" every time. [The six tracks had a running time of 46 minutes]

5 out of 5 stars Some of Engelbert's Finest.......2006-12-27

Even in the Autumn of his career he offers up such a fine piece of work. This is as much a delight to watch as it is to listen to. What a talent. Unchained Melody shows the range and gift he has delivered to the world through his songs for so long. You can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Engelbert Humperdinck - Engelbert Live (Bonus CD).......2006-11-10

This is by far the best of his DVD. In fact, I owned 3 of this DVD. My last purchase was because I wanted the CD, so that I can listen sometimes without watching the DVD. I can listen/watch it without getting tired of it. In fact, the more I play it, the more you appreciate & enjoy what a great singer Engelbert is ! This is a highly recommended DVD for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music - Great sound and magnificent colors!.......2006-01-21

Englebert still has the magic. DTS sound is fabulous and the colors are vivid. The 54-piece orchestra and the background singers add so much to the concert. Absolutely fantastic music!

5 out of 5 stars superb concert, great package.......2005-01-11

In this live performance from the Forum in Los Angeles in 1995, Engelbert has the same amazing vocal range, breath control and smooth sound he had in the late '60s and '70s when he had his own television show, and pop hits like "Release Me" and the many romantic ballads that made him a superstar, in fact he is quoted in the liner notes as saying "time gives you more experience, and I sing with more depth now because I draw on that experience whenever possible".

This is a terrific concert, and a lot of the credit goes to the fabulous arranger/musical director Bebu Silvetti, who has done so much marvelous work with top Latin music stars like Luis Miguel and Rocio Durcal. He weaves his magic here with lush arrangements and superb musicianship, and in the section that takes place in a recording studio ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes") and the duo with Engelbert and Bebu on piano ("The Shadow of Your Smile"), one can tell that these two men have a rapport and admiration of each others' skills and talent.

Engelbert is also backed by an wonderful trio of singers, and one of them, Michaela, gets to show how well she can sing solo with a stupendous "Malagueña", and she also sings a duet with Engelbert ("When I Fall in Love").
In "Quando, Quando, Quando", he really lets loose, dancing as well as singing. He looks good in the first half in black with a silver waistcoat, and in the second half in a purple flounced shirt. The final two numbers are extraordinary..."Unchained Melody" is fantastic, and his "Ave Maria" encore sublime.
Total running time is 2 hours.

The DVD extras include a long interview that takes place in Engelbert's home in England, a great old house on 25 acres of land, with many gardens designed by his wife; he tells stories of his life, which are quite fascinating, and a combination of hard work, fate, and God's blessings.
There is also a "photo gallery" with a few photos, most of them seen in the interview section.
This package comes with the CD of the concert, making it a super value. The only tracks missing from the CD are the studio recording session of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", and the "Malagueña" sung by Michaela.
