Nora Ephron wrote the brisk screenplay for this 1989 romantic comedy, director Rob Reiner made a nicely glossy New York story (very much in a Woody Allen vein) out of it, and Billy Crystal's unstoppable charm made it something really special. Crystal and Meg Ryan play longtime platonic friends who keep dancing around their deeper feelings for one another, and Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are their respective pals who fall in love and get married. Ryan doesn't get a lot of funny material, but her performance is typically alive and intuitive, and she more than holds her own with Crystal's comic motor mouth and sweet sentimentality. Reiner is on comfortable ground, liberated from the burden of making serious statements in the lead-footed manner of subsequent features. --Tom Keogh
Description
"Brimming over with style, intelligence and flashing wit" (Rolling Stone), this "splendid and irresistible" (Los Angeles Times) film from director Rob Reiner(American President is one of the best-loved romantic comedies of all time. Featuring dazzling performances from Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, exceptional music from Harry Connick Jr., and an OscarÂ(r)-nominated* screenplay by Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally is an "explosively funny" commentary on friendship, courtships - and other hardships - of the modern age (Newsweek)! Will sex ruin a perfect relationship between a man and a woman? that's what Harry (Crystal) and Sally (Ryan) debate during their travels from Chicago to New York. And eleven years and later, they're still no closer to finding the answer. Will these two best friends ever accept that they're meant for each other...or will they continue to deny the attraction that's existed since the first moment When Harry Met Sally? *1989
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Movie!.......2007-05-22
I've seen this movie a dozen times and love it everytime. It's a perfect romantic movie. I also love "You've Got Mail" . Both have great endings!
Thoughts on You've Got Mail.......2007-05-18
I totally enjoyed this movie, Billy Crystal Is as always a great watch, plus Meg Ryan is unbeatable. When I see a movie like this I get to believing the actors are really like this in real life. I watch movies to be entertained, this movie entertained me. I liked this more than Sleepless in Seattle, mostly because Meg Ryan was in it more.
classic Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan flick.......2007-04-04
Lots of comical, dry and witty humor.
Especially classic scene of Sally's fake orgasm in the cafe.
Ends up a fantastic romantic comedy that anyone could enjoy.
MY VERY MOST FAVORITIST ROMANCE MOVIE.......2007-04-03
Great movie...well acted, well cast....a real sociological commentary on romance and dating in the 1980s. Who doesn't love Meg Ryan before she screwed up her life and lips? And life is never funnier than when seen through the eyes of Billy Crystal! If you haven't seen "When Harry Met Sally", you better!
When Harry Met Sally.......2007-03-24
One of Billy Crystal's and Meg Ryan's best movie ever made together.

Description
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz live slaphappily ever after as newlyweds honeymooning in The Long, Long Trailer, breezily directed by Vincente Minnelli. They quickly find that the interior of a moving trailer is ideal for tossing a Caesar salad - and everything else. That backing up their 40-foot, three-ton home is only a little more difficult than threading a needle wearing boxing gloves. And that trailer-park folks are neighborly sorts who turn the lovebirds' rig into the wrong, wrong trailer by crashing the wedding night. Co-starring comedy pros Marjorie Main and Keenan Wynn (Ball's frequent co-star in her MGM days), this smash was filmed at the height of the I Love Lucy craze and is packed with the inventive sight gags and physical humor that made the series a TV landmark. If you like the Trailer, you're going to love the movie!
Customer Reviews:
The Long Long Trailer.......2007-05-21
I had seen this movie years ago. While doing some gardening , I was reminded of the movie by moving some large rocks. My sister-in-law and I decided we wanted to see it again. It was worth the search.
Very Entertaining.......2007-05-17
I really enjoyed this movie as the humour in it was simple and I could relate to it really well. It was simple and the actors expressions easy to read. I enjoyed it and so did my young children.
it was great!.......2007-05-08
I came right on time and it was sooo funny, the whole family enjoyed it.
Formula for disaster!.......2007-05-08
Filmed while I Love Lucy was in its peak of popularity, The Long, Long Trailer was a forerunner of many vacation farces to come. How could you miss with the premise of a huge trailer being hauled across the country, especially if Lucille Ball is involved? It is slapstick situation comedy at its best, with memorable scene after memorable scene. You'll never be tempted to ride in a trailer while it's moving after seeing "Trailer". Watching Lucy cook for Ricky while they navigate winding roads should have nipped the whole RV movement in the bud. What's sad is that our own family's real RV experiences aren't much better than what Lucy and Ricky endured. This is an excellent DVD to take along to watch on a vacation. Team it up with National Lampoon's Summer Vacation.
excellent classic comedy.......2007-04-06
This is a great oldie that makes light of road trips, getting married/honeymoons, hauling something with a vehicle and collecting momentos. The experience is all too real for those who have traveled on self-planned trips or are do-it yourself types with regard to travel.

Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the remarkable context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of Rod Serling. While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists.
Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning score favors intricate ensemble numbers that present the characters' divergent, then overlapping fears and desires. And it's the latter category that provides a primary thread to James Lapine's ingenious puzzle of a book, which coheres around the inevitability--and treachery--of our innermost wishes. That theme is given farcical energy in the first act, which offers enough comic invention, tart dialogue, and witty music for a satisfying evening of theater as is.
Instead, Sondheim and Lapine offer a bold, darker second act that takes a look at what happens after "happily ever after," elevating the work beyond inspired parody toward allegorical gravity. By the final scenes, with the one-two punch of the score's two most enduring songs, "No One Is Alone" and "Children Will Listen," what began as a clever diversion has touched deeper nerves and primed some tear ducts. This video production by the original Broadway cast gets its marquee shimmer from Bernadette Peters's wonderful witch, but the standout (and Tony winner as Best Actress) is Joanna Gleason, who gives the Baker's Wife a mixture of warmth, pragmatism, and sudden, poignantly romantic radiance.
The DVD version is comparatively no-frills, given its American Playhouse origins, but multiformat digital audio renders the musical performances in immaculate detail. --Sam Sutherland

Description
A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans to lift a curse that has kept them childless. Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason and the rest of the original Broadway cast weave their magic spell over you in Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece, directed by James Lapine, a seamless fusion of fairy tale characters and what happens after "happily ever after. "With oft-recorded songs such as "Children Will Listen" and "No One is Alone," "Into the Woods" is a music lover's delight from start to finish--and will forever cement Stephen Sondheim's unparalleled position as the giant of the American musical theater.
Customer Reviews:
It's good to think ahead.......2007-07-04
It has always taken the American public about thirty years to appreciate Sondheim, since his work tends to hold a mirror up to the audience and say, "Look: this is you; you've done this". As a result, the audience doesn't always warm up to the collaborations in which Sondheim finds interesting. To have the foresight to hire Terry Hughes to place four cameras on the stage of the Martin Beck Theatre to capture "Into The Woods" for it's premier production was nothing short of brilliance. Thirty years from now, this will be a treasure: Johanna Gleason, Bernadette Peters, Kim Crosby, Chip Zien. One never forgets that we are watching a live performance, yet the cameras do the work of a director who is a genius-only a television director could pull this off. By now, you should all know that this particular musical is a classic, brilliant and perfect for the entire family as you can bathe up the kids, pop the corn, un-pop the wine and pause at intermission to put the kids to bed so that you can come back down to see what happens after "Happily Ever After." Some of the most creative writing has gone into this work, James Lapine is a genius and deserves equal credit to Sondheim-I am certain that he would agree-but still, it's the brilliance of the music and lyrics that blend into the book of this musical that creates such a beautiful story. "Careful the things you say: Children will listen."
Original is Best.......2007-05-17
'Into the Woods' may be the funniest musical I've ever seen. With cast members such as Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason it is not to be missed. A plot with interweaving fairy tales definitely keeps you on your toes!
Into The Woods.......2007-05-09
Wonderful, very enjoyable. My 8th grader was in a production of this play for The Roeper Theater Company in Birmingham, MI and I hosted the cast party after the last show. I had this playing in the background for them and they really enjoyed seeing how "their" part was portrayed on Broadway. Lots of laughs.
A Must-Have for Any Sondheim Fan.......2007-05-06
This is a really excellent production from top to bottom. The music is brilliant, the lyrics even better, and the cast is stunning.
Truly, the only thing I can criticise about this DVD is the lack of any special features. Everything else is brilliant.
BACK TO THE WOODS.......2007-04-24
I liked it but not nearly as much as composer Stephen Sondheim and writer James Lapine's other taped Broadway DVD's, "Sunday In The Park With George", and "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street". Here, being characters from genuine fairy tales, the cast never emerges as anything but playthings in a morality tale, a slick and profound adult lesson to be sure, but with cut-out mature representation almost verging on the parody of "Avenue Q", that never wanders far from the simplistic fairly tales it draws from. Bernadette Peters' 'Witch' seems inspired by an "I Love Lucy" episode, and it is typical of the superficial characterizations the musical offers. Still, it delivers what you can expect from a Sondheim/Lapine project; a sweeping musical that ultimately offers produndity in the mundane. It's just not my particular cup of poison.

The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh
Description
After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.
Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15
I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!
It got me to join.......2006-11-12
"Heartbreak ridge," is one of those movies that I think turned into an unintentional recruiting movie. First off, for those true devil dogs, like me, you all recognize Eastwood's character of GySgt Highway as the epitomy of what Chesty Puller described as a Marine. How many marines have encountered Gunnys, Sergeant Majors, and First Sergeants that held the same attitude and mystique that Gunny Highway had? I mean, first off, a combat veterean who tells a POG (Marines will know that term) officer to go "F" himself, is the kind of NCO we wanted to follow. I know that when I first watched this movie, it made me want to join (which I did) and be just like Gunny Highway (which I didn't). For the people who see this movie and say it portrays the Corps in a negative light, go live with a Marine infantry unit, and you'll see how realistic it is. It may not be the best Marine Corps story (I save that for Jarhead), but its one of the best out there, better than Full Metal Jacket. I reccomend that all 0311 Marines, and really, any Marine, should add this to their "Must- Own" collection.
Worst movie Eastwood ever made.......2006-09-17
This movie is so bad that even the Army, which supported it at first, withdrew there support. Eastwood's character started his career in the US Army during the Korean War where he fought in a battle later called "Heartbreak Ridge". The story line was so inept and the telling of the tale so bad that the Army withdrew its support in the production. The film company then had to rewrite to scipt so that Eastwood's character changes services and enlist in the USMC after the Korean War and fights in the Vietnam War.
So all of you "Leathernecks" looking for a "pride of the Corps" tale should pass, it isn't going to happen in this story. In fact, the movie takes pains to present the USMC in a very negative light. That the Corps continued to support this production reflects just how desperate it was for any mention from Hollywood.
The script is pathetic, the production weak, and the conclusion unsupportable. Send Hollywood a message and do not support this movie.
"Shut your mouth, Hippie!".......2006-09-05
An excellent movie, Heartbreak Ridge, brings to the screen the story of a down-on-his-luck sergeant in the U.S. Marines who is given another chance/shot at what he loves the most: his job, his woman, and his men.
Clint Eastwood and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the humor, are all wonderful!
In short, Heartbreak Ridge is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!

Customer Reviews:
Mrs. Doubtfire.......2007-06-10
This movie is about a man, an immature, irresponsible kind of guy who loves his kids. How can you help but to love a dad who would do anything to be with his children, including dressing up as a woman in order to be their caregiver? It is refreshing to see a movie that shows a father's devotion and love in such a positive light. Robin Williams is a wonderful versatile actor and always gives a fantastic performance no matter what type of role he is playing. And Sally Field is adorable as usual. The family interaction is delightful throughout. This movie is funny, poignant, and entertaining for children and adults alike, a definite family movie sure to be enjoyed by all.
One of the Best Movies EVER.......2007-04-07
This is one of Robert Williams best Movies ever because it has it all, Comedy, Drama, and it gets you all teary and mushy inside while making you laugh your head off. Deffinetely recommend to Robert William fans. Trust me you wont regret it. I sure didn't.

When a Great Dane puppy is raised with a litter of Dachshunds, it naturally thinks it's a Dachshund too--even when it grows to 10 times the size. Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette star as the hapless couple who took in the galumphing dog, which wreaks havoc on their house and home. The Ugly Dachshund is mostly a series of spectacular disasters (the doggy demolition of Jones's art studio will delight kids and reduce adults to nervous wrecks), but it's held together by the convincing domestic banter of Jones and Pleshette (who was quite a dish in 1965); the pair went on to star in a couple of other Disney live-action flicks, Bluebeard's Ghost and The Shaggy D.A.. Despite some racial and gender stereotypes, it's a good-natured and amusing movie in the Disney mold. Also featuring classic character actor Charlie Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby, The Parent Trap). --Bret Fetzer
Description
There's magic in the memories as great Disney moments are captured right here for you and your family to enjoy. You don't have to own a pet to enjoy this story of a happy suburban household gone to the dogs! The Garrisons (Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette) are the "proud parents" of three adorable dachshund pups -- and one overgrown Great Dane named Brutus, who nevertheless thinks of himself as a dainty dachsie. His identity crisis results in an uproarious series of household crises that reduce the Garrisons' house to shambles -- and viewers to howls of laughter!

Just as Love Affair inspired An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle, Folies Bergère inspired That Night in Rio and On the Riviera. In Walter Lang's Technicolor version, Danny Kaye takes on a dual role previously assumed by Maurice Chevalier and Don Ameche. A master of mistaken identity, Kaye makes it his own. His Jack Martin is an American song and dance man based in Monte Carlo. When playboy aviator Henri Duran (Kaye with French accent) returns from his latest adventure, Martin notices a resemblance. He also notices Duran's neglected wife, Lili (Gene Tierney). After Duran is called away on business, Martin is enlisted to impersonate him for an important function. That gives him the chance to cozy up to Lili--and infuriate dance partner Colette (Corinne Calvet). Duran pays him back with an impersonation of his own. It isn't Twelfth Night, but On the Riviera is an enjoyable diversion. It also represents a family affair, since designer Oleg Cassini outfitted wife Tierney and Sylvia Fine penned tunes for husband Kaye (except for the standard "Ballin' the Jack"). Though considered a minor effort in the canons of Lang and Kaye--the musical was more of an audience favorite than a critical darling--Fox has done right by this long-unavailable title with an interactive press book, featurettes, lobby cards, and a pristine print (heavy on the brilliant blues). Look sharp for future Fosse hoofer (and wife) Gwen Verdon as a dancer and Tierney's famous Laura portrait above Duran's fireplace. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Reviews:
Great movie.......2007-06-27
This is a great movie. A fun remake of "That Night in Rio with Don Ameche. Danny Kaye is a very verstile entertainer who can sing, dance and act. He really pulls off the double role he plays as an entertainer and a wealthy man who has a reputation as a ladies man. A couple of the songs in this movie harken back to my childhood and enhances the enjoyment of this movie. A must see!
A Dance Historian's Point of View.......2007-06-13
Warner set the standard with well-produced DVDs of classic MGM musicals - 20th Century Fox is up for the challenge.
A lot of love and care went into the making of this DVD. It comes in a slipcase and contains four b/w lobby cards. The picture and sound were superbly restored. By the way, the format is of course 4:3 fullscreen, not widescreen. The extras section includes the trailer, a still gallery and three comprehensive featurettes:
"The Riviera Story" (10 minutes): "On the Riviera" is a remake of "Folies Bergère" (1936) and "That Night in Rio" (1941), respectively. The featurette compares the three films and its stars.
"A Portrait of Danny Kaye" (26 minutes): A biographical look at Kaye's impressive life, featuring, amongst others, his daughter Dena Kaye.
"The Jack of Clubs - Choreographer Jack Cole" (10 minutes): An appreciation of Cole's work (that's been long overdue).
I don't consider the film a great comedy. (If you want to see Danny Kaye at his comical best, get "The Court Jester".) Nevertheless he does a good job in a dull plot that's constructed solely around his persona. The two girls, Gene Tierney and Corinne Calvet, contribute nothing except their lovely looks.
The big plus however, besides Kaye's performance, is the lively and hummable score by Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine and Cole's galvanic choreography featuring the stunning Gwen Verdon. (Verdon was a dancer in a class of her own. Jack Cole, Michael Kidd and her later husband Bob Fosse knew it and made great use of it. She danced for Cole in many shows and films, always receiving solo or centre stage spots. Her work as a dancer can be studied in the films "Meet Me after the Show", "The I-Don't-Care-Girl", "The Farmer Takes a Wife", "David and Bathsheba" (available on DVD), "The Mississippi Gambler", "The Merry Widow" (available on DVD in South America), "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" and "Damn Yankees" (available on DVD). All of them a testament to her unequalled talent.)
Let's take a look at the five musical numbers:
"On the Riviera": Kaye performs the title song impersonating Maurice Chevalier. A little tip of the hat to the man who originally played Kaye's character.
"Rhythm of a New Romance": A big production number that introduced Gwen Verdon to movie audiences. It starts with a dynamic Can-Can. (Two years later Verdon would do the Can-Can again in the MGM version of "The Merry Widow". This would land her a job in a new Cole Porter musical - called "Can-Can". The rest is Broadway history.)
The number continues with an amazing East Indian dance sequence featuring Verdon and Jack Cole (wearing a Kathakali mask). (Cole studied authentic Bharata Natyam and other ethnic dances and integrated them brilliantly into his style.)
"Ballin' the Jack": This is one of Kaye's trademark songs. It was part of his stage act for many years. Here's a very laid back and sophisticated version.
"Popo the Puppet": A highly imaginative number featuring Danny Kaye and the dancers Gwen Verdon and Ethel Martin in Commedia Del Arte costumes. The droll song received an Oscar nomination. (By the way, look for the similarities between the tambourine players and the tambourine playing doctors in the "Some of These Days" sequence the next time you watch Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz". Fosse admired Jack Cole's work.)
"A Happy Ending": The finale is pure heaven for anyone who's interested in dance history and a rare chance to see almost the entire core of the Jack Cole Dancers together:
There's Cole himself, Gwen Verdon, Buzz Miller (An excellent jazz dancer. He would also work extensively with Fosse (in both the stage and movie version of the "Pajama Game" and in "Redhead"). He was Jerome Robbins' boyfriend.), George and Ethel Martin (They were the most loyal of Cole's dancers and had been working with him since the early Forties. George Martin appeared in all of Cole's Columbia musicals usually partnered with Rod Alexander and Alex Romero. George and his wife Ethel would re-create parts of Cole's original stage choreography for Richard Lester's movie adaptation of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".)
If you'd like to know more about Jack Cole I recommend to get Glenn Loney's book "The Unsung Genius - The Passion of Dancer-Choreographer Jack Cole". Look for a list of his films under imdb.com.
Thanks 20th Century Fox for helping to keep the legends alive. I hope that you will continue to release rare and forgotten musicals on DVD.
On the Riviera.......2007-06-13
This is probably one of the most underrated movies of all time.
Alright, some of the musical sequences are dated - especially the "Rhythm of a new romance"-number - but the dialogue and the story are still extremely witty and funny. And it's Danny Kaye at his best. Not as brilliant as in "The Court Jester" three years later, but more mature and refined than in "The secret Life of Walther Mitty" (which is a great movie, too!), Kaye gives a wonderful performance as nightclub entertainer Jack Martin ("Ballin' the Jack" and "Happy Ending" are just wonderful). And he plays rich aviator Henri Duran who neglects his wife and only comes to his senses when he thinks that she's betraying him with Martin. Kaye is believeable in both parts.
"On the Riviera" is a very entertaining musical comedy and it makes fun of every glamour cliché ever used in Hollywood.
Highly recommended!
On the Riviera.......2007-06-11
An adorable Danny Kaye movie. He plays two parts a rich playboy and a night club singer/dancer. Danny can not be beat - I especially love his song, "Popo the puppet" - that alone is worth buying the movie!

Customer Reviews:
Lame plot, but hot women and pretty good softcore sex........2006-03-14
April Hannah is a frustrated housewife with a secret desire. And since this is a softcore video, you just know what that secret is, right? Of course, it's to go rock climbing with her husband. No, I'm not joking. But hey, I've seen much weaker storylines used to tie together a bunch of sex scenes.
There are five sex scenes. A boy/girl scene with April, two boy/girl scenes with Akira Lane, a girl/girl scene with April and Brittney Skye, and a boy/girl with Brittney Skye. Like all Torchlight releases, the sex scenes are long. The girl/girl scene clocks in at twelve minutes. All the women are attractive and smoking hot. Most of the sex scenes are good and decently explicit. The exception was the final boy/girl scene with Brittney Skye, which suffered badly from some very unimaginative and tedious photography. Fortunately, Brittney is less smoking hot that April or Akira, so it wasn't a huge waste.
It's one of Torchlight's better releases, and if you like their stuff, I'd recommend it.
almost like real porn !.......2005-06-11
I really have no idea what the plot of this movie is - and I didnt care! I watched it for the sex scenes only! There are, I believe 5 sex scenes in all. Not enough for my taste, but each scene is about 10 minutes long. The girls are naked often and we even see some pink from a couple of them, but you have to watch for it, not every actress here shows it.
I'm not very familiar with the actresses except for Akira Lane, who is the really hot asain girl in the movie. She has two very good scenes. There is also a girl/girl scene which is fairly hot, though unfortunatly for me, Akira was not in it.
This movie has a hardcore porn feel to it. I'm actually wondering if one or two of the scenes werent faked! Little things also add to the porn feel, like - the way this whole movie is filmed; it's almost as if they just used an average everyday video camera to shoot it, although the video quality is very good. And also, we hear the slapping of skin against skin in this movie - just like we hear in all hardcore porn, which is something I dont think I've seen in any other "softcore" movie.
I thought it was pretty good - and I know my softcore porn!

Amazon.com essential video
A Beautiful Mind manages to twist enough pathos out of John Nash's incredible life story to redeem an at-times goofy portrayal of schizophrenia. Russell Crowe tackles the role with characteristic fervor, playing the Nobel prize-winning mathematician from his days at Princeton, where he developed a groundbreaking economic theory, to his meteoric rise to the cover of Forbes magazine and an MIT professorship, and on through to his eventual dismissal due to schizophrenic delusions. Of course, it is the delusions that fascinate director Ron Howard and, predictably, go astray. Nash's other world, populated as it is by a maniacal Department of Defense agent (Ed Harris), an imagined college roommate who seems straight out of Dead Poets Society, and an orphaned girl, is so fluid and scriptlike as to make the viewer wonder if schizophrenia is really as slick as depicted. Crowe's physical intensity drags us along as he works admirably to carry the film on his considerable shoulders. No doubt the story of Nash's amazing will to recover his life without the aid of medication is a worthy one, his eventual triumph heartening. Unfortunately, Howard's flashy style is unable to convey much of it. --Fionn Meade

A beautiful way to tell a tragically uplifting story..........2007-06-20
The real life story of John Nash plays out as engaging and interesting as some of our more well thought out fiction. Now, as some have already noted whether here or in media scrutiny, not all of this film follows Nash's life accurately. Some of this film is fictionalized, but isn't that for the most part what always happens. Just because it's a true story doesn't mean Hollywood doesn't feel the need to tamper. At least here the tampering does not by any means take away from the power within the film and the performances that dominate. Nash's life story is still portrayed effortlessly and beautifully, compelling and entertaining and full of just about every aspect of a priceless and award worthy film. `A Beautiful Mind' truly has it all.
Russell Crowe here delivers a breathtaking performance as John Nash, a brilliant math student who gets to the top only to tumble back down to the bottom at breakneck speed. Living a life that in the end appears mostly a lie, Nash eventually is diagnosed with schizophrenia. At this point in his life, married with a child and working a steady job, Nash and those around him are finding it difficult to differentiate reality from the creations of his mind. The movie then turns its focus on Nash's recovery and the effect his sickness has on those closest to him.
Crowe is truly the star here, swallowing whole this character driven study on the human spirit and determination to survive. He engulfs the screen and makes this mans plight come alive for the audience. What's commendable here is that Howard's directing and of course the script, adapted from Sylvia Nasar's biography, allow for the viewer to really connect with the entire cast, most importantly Nash himself. This proves effective because once Nash's life is shattered before our very eyes and he begins to crumble we are brought to a place deep within our emotions that would have been impossible to touch had we not come to know Nash before his world came tumbling down. We fall in love with this man and so we feel his pain, his wife's pain and are emotionally distressed alongside them both.
Alongside Crowe both Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany deliver astounding performances as Nash's longsuffering wife and imaginary best friend. Jennifer's Oscar winning performance is full of so much life, so much pain and emotional attachment that we can relate to and understand her feelings every step of the way. We watch her transform from this woman who knew how to control the things around her, including Nash, to a woman scared of what was going to happen next, a woman who felt detached from all she thought was real. Bettany's portrayal of Nash's college roommate is high spirited and refreshing. He serves as our brightest comic relief but also our biggest heartbreak as we watch Nash realize he never truly had his friendship at all.
Crowe, one of our finest actors, is a true chameleon and he engages himself so far into this role that he becomes John Nash, and watching that transformation is utterly rewarding. His determination and fervor are so invested in this performance from the moment he appears on screen that one is automatically drawn to him and connected to him entirely. From start to finish `A Beautiful Mind' proves itself worthy of our attention and consideration and is sure to astonish and amaze you. From its heartbreaking story to its brilliantly crafted direction to its powerhouse performances, `A Beautiful Mind' is a winner from the top of its head to the tip of its toes. The well rounded supporting cast including the likes of Ed Harris and Josh Lucas continue to astonish in their respective roles and aid in delivering one of the warmest and beautifully articulated Hollywood experiences. This, my friends, is what going to the movies is all about.

CROWE is beautiful in this quadruple Academy Award winner! Hats off to Director Ron Howard too!.......2007-03-27
Russell Crowe did an incredible job of portraying the real-life story of Princeton Professor John Nash, a brilliant mathematician who won the 1994 Nobel Prize, despite his dysfunction due to schizophrenia. My heart went out to this amazing man for all he suffered; his perseverance tugged at my heart strings; and I was heartened by his wife standing beside him through thick and thin. I'm highly encouraged that Professor Nash managed to kick his dependence on the schizophrenia medicine and go on to reach some of his major goals in life.
Thanks to the brilliant directing of Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind is one of those bittersweet movies with a satisfying ending that left me feeling good about life and the human conditiion ... a lasting impression of "hope."
Russell Crowe and the entire cast are to be commended for their sensitive, caring performances in this fine drama.

Lovely.......2007-03-23
I got it as a gift for someone's birthday. They loved it. Fabulous!
A terrible example of 'excellence' in film........2007-02-09
The best part of the film were when the leading character was delusional. That's not a good basis for a film to grow off of, especially when sanity brings the viewer a happy boring ending. There was no real romance to speak of, instead the idea of exchanging bodily fluids and skipping any small talk prevailed. The director Ron Howard reaffirms that he does not know how to craft love stories.
I did not find the characters to be believable as portrayed. The acting by Russell Crowe was horrific. The phoniness of his stammering accent reminds me of having sticky fingers. You can't get rid of it and the longer it goes on the more annonying it gets. His wife lacked any character development. She is similar to an immovable pillar which remains in the same spot and the same shape less some aging. I can hear Crowe's character saying, "that's a good wife, now stand over there and cry when I get all the accolade."
The makeup showing the aging of characters appeared planned and formulated. It was great the first dozen movies we saw it but now it doesn't work. I found myself successfully guessing where the plastic pieces were applied to the faces. There wasn't much else to do as I was completely bored waiting for the credits to roll finally releasing me from this yawner.
I will give the movie 3 stars. It was average at best. The editing, soundtrack and portrayal by some supporing actors were the only things saving it from a lower score. Wait for it to appear on TV. This movie won 4 academy awards. It is a terrible example of 'excellence' in film.

Liz and Dick (a.k.a. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) almost seemed to be importing the psychodramas of their marriage into this 1967 film (of course, the same was true of every film they made together). Adapted from Shakespeare's play and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo and Juliet) with his usual eye for sumptuousness, this version of Taming features a particularly boisterous, bawdy, fun performance by its stars. Composer Nino Rota--best known for scoring several of Fellini's best-known works--received a National Board of Reviews award for his vivid soundtrack. --Tom Keogh

The Taming of the Shrew.......2007-07-02
One year before his outstanding adaptation of the Bard's "Romeo and Juliet", Zeffirelli displays all his buoyant energy and stylistic flair in making this venerable old comedy fresh and exciting. With the exception of Albee's "Virginia Woolf" made the prior year, on- and off-again spouses Taylor and Burton were never better teamed. A young Michael York and crafty Cyril Cusack stand out with veteran Hordern in a stellar supporting cast. Here's another Kate worth kissing.
great!!!!!.......2007-05-16
this is a great movie, and elizabeth tayor shows, that she can be funny and not always serious in her movies:-)
A Classic ,I Love To Hate You..........2007-03-30
Elizabeth was never better,of course so is Richard. They love to hate one another and it shows through the works of Shakespeare. A classic that I fell in love with in English class. Thank you Miss Grant for insisting on this one.
Joyous Shakespearian Romp Starring Film Legends Taylor And Burton.......2007-01-25
Never having been a fan of Shakespeare while in school this wonderful film version of the Bard's rollicking comic story was responsible for me seeing his works in a different light. Considered quite a risk to film in late 1966 due to Shakespeare's reputation for serious literary works which possibly lacked alot of mass appeal, this sumptuous film version of one of his best comedies became a surprise hit at the Box Office proving that Shakspeare could be big box office. The film proved an ideal vehicle for screen legends Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton who in the mid 1960's were without a doubt the most famous or "infamous", movie couple in the world. Fresh from their triumph in the critically acclaimed "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", for which Elizabeth was destined to win her second Academy Award as Best Actress, "The Taming of the Shrew", proved to be an ideal follow up to that more serious earlier effort for the Burtons. Both films were unique in that they gave audiences the impression that what they were actually seeing on screen was very similiar to the much chronicled and very volatile real life marriage of the two colourful super stars. That in itself despite "Shrews", many admirable qualities ensured big box office earnings. Whether it did accurately reflect the Burton's real life marriage or not "The Taming of the Shrew", is a hugely entertaining romp that stands on its own merits and is a rare film based on a highly intellectual work that can be enjoyed by all viewers with its incredibly rich sets, breath taking costumes and music. Richard Burton and especially Elizabeth Taylor have rarely been better than here and it is sad to think that this film marked the last time where their names together on a film guaranteed its automatic success at the Box Office.
The quintessential Catherine and Petrucio.......2007-01-21
It is said that when the director was deciding who to play the parts of this Shakespeare comedy, he was visiting Elizabeth and Richard during one of their marital fights. He knew then who had to star in his production. His choice was perfect with Richard Burton as the light-hearted but firm Petrucio and Liz as the firey untamed sultress. This one will have you in stitches in short order while enjoying some of the most colorful lines of the english language. The quintessential Catherine and Petrucio.
