Produced in a time when films were both literally and figuratively black and white, Made for Each Other was unique in its effective blending of the comedic, the dramatic, and, as perhaps some would insensitively say, the melodramatic. Beautiful Carole Lombard and likeable James Stewart are Jane and John Mason, a couple who meet, fall madly in love, marry, and quickly have a baby. But while they--and the audience--are confident that they are meant for each other, life intercedes and the couple must meet with disapproving in-laws, job stress, financial challenges and, finally, a devastating illness.

Lombard and Stewart--and the genuinely good people they portray--are utterly compelling and charming. Say yawningly what you will about tradition, but the Masons' is a path many, if not most, go down. And unlike the wonderful but wholly fantasy world of peer Preston Sturges, director John Cromwell's universe is, like real life, full of ups and downs. It's an accessible, sensitive portrayal. He gives the audience characters they want to see succeed, and to see stay together in the process. It may be a tale of triumph of the human spirit, but its ultimate sentiment--one that celebrates the kindness of strangers--is thoroughly sweet, though in no way saccharine.

Look for a great supporting cast, including a blustery Charles Coburn as John Mason's boss, and Lucile Watson as Mason's interfering mother. --N.F. Mendoza

3 out of 5 stars Keeps the girlfriend happy.......2007-01-18

I bought this for my girlfriend and it came with three movies. She informed me that two of the three were pretty good and she liked them. The other was so-so. I dont know which ones were good and which was so-so since I dont watch old movies. She likes it so I gave it a 3+. The picture on the movies was pretty clear and seemed to be without flaws. According to the g-friend, well worth it if you like old black and white movies. (one may have been in color, cant remember).

3 out of 5 stars Stewart and Lombard a Winning Pair in an Otherwise Cliché-Ridden Blend of Comedy and Melodrama.......2006-11-13

Watching an impossibly young James Stewart teamed with the screen's reigning screwball comedienne, the wondrous Carole Lombard, is treat enough in itself, but this 1939 dramedy directed by John Cromwell has them working overtime on a cliché-bound plot about young, struggling marrieds, John and Jane Mason, who face an unexpected crisis. Penned by Jo Swerling, the script throws in every movie-invented barrier to their happiness - John's dominating mother who lives with them, his unreasonably demanding boss, a series of impossible domestics, and a surprise pregnancy which eventually leads to a melodramatic turn that involves a plane flying through an unrelenting thunderstorm. The tear-jerking film bears a certain resemblance to Leo McCarey's 1941 "Penny Serenade" with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne in style and pacing.

None of it should work, but somehow it does because Stewart is so callow and sincere, Lombard so earthy and knockout gorgeous, and their relationship quite convincing. Playing their standard character roles during this period, Charles Coburn plays John's hearing-impaired blowhard of a boss, Judge Doolittle, while Lucile Watson is her imperious self as the mother-in-law from hell criticizing Jane's every move. My favorite player is Louise Beavers, who briefly plays the one maid the Masons adore. The Masons' financial straits force her to leave but not before a lovely scene between her and Lombard in the park. The movie was produced by David O. Selznick, who was preoccupied with post-production work on "Gone With the Wind" but you can definitely see his influence in the film's technical polish. It's too bad the film has fallen into public domain as the print transfer to the 2004 DVD is woefully substandard. Regardless, the pairing of Stewart and Lombard is well worth seeing in any vehicle.

4 out of 5 stars Lombard in rare dramatic role.......2006-06-21

What starts out as another typical Carole Lombard comedy turns deadly serious halfway through. Lombard and attorney Jimmy Stewart just get married, and before they can even leave on their honeymoon, troubles begin: he gets called back by his crotchety boss (Charles Coburn) to try a case. Later at a disastrous (though still humorous in spots) dinner party thrown by the couple to entertain Coburn and his family, the boss announces that his son-in-law is to become a partner in the firm, something Stewart was pining for. It's no more joking around after that: things really get tough for Stewart and Lombard until one New Years Eve their baby becomes very ill, and Coburn turns decent and finds a way to get medicine they need to be flown to them through a snowstorm.

Lombard usually didn't get a chance to play serious roles such as she does here and she's excellent. Jimmy Stewart is also good as the shy and timid (until the end) lawyer, maybe too shy and timid to be totally believable, but still good. (I thought shy lawyers were as rare as blind racecar drivers.) The melodrama gets poured on pretty thick by the time the baby gets sick, but the excellent acting by Stewart and Lombard - and some of the other minor characters, especially Lucile Watson as Lombard's mother - make up for that easily.

5 out of 5 stars Sentimental Slice of Life.......2006-06-07

This touching film following the trials and tribulations of a newly married couple moves from humor to drama with ease thanks to fine performances by Jimmy Stewart and Carole Lombard, a good screenplay from Jo Swerling, and deft direction from John Cromwell.

John Mason (James Stewart) is a young attorney returning from a trip happy as a clam. After meeting Jane (Carole Lombard) on the trip a whirlwind romance has led to him returning a married man. John's happiness can barely be contained as he cannot wait to put his new bride's picture on his desk.

Charles Coburn is the head of the law firm he works for and whose daughter it was expected he'd marry. This causes regret on the part of his mother (Lucile Watson) who is forced to live with the young couple just starting out. She becomes a critical pest born from lonelines that the sweet Jane must endure from the start.

Jane's mother-in-law is not the only thing weighing the young couple down, however. Their planned honeymoon aboard the Normandy leaves without them when he is called back to work earlier than expected. Soon John is passed over for junior partner and instead is forced to accept a cut in pay which leads to financial woes for the couple, who now have a baby.

This is all played out with both humor and tenderness. There is something real here as Cromwell captures the plight of all young newlyweds with big dreams intruded upon by the realities of life. It is the small touches which seperate this film from others similar in tone. It is very poignant when John believes he has not made the grade and lived up to his end of their marriage. Moments like the discussion about Jane's wedding ring which he was never able to upgrade are what makes this film truly special.

When the baby becomes ill there is a desperate flight through snowy skies to get them the medicine that will keep their small family numbered at three. While it seems contrived a bit to some, this was an actual event in the life of producer David O. Selznick. It was his brother who had been saved in the same manner.

There is a sweet and rewarding ending all the viewer has hoped for in this terrific slice of life film. Most prints of this film are less than mediocre but the one from Anchor Bay is excellent. That one and the DVD release from MGM are the only two recommended. Those who enjoy a sentimental tear-jerker will find a new favorite in this one.

    4 out of 5 stars Luminescent Lombard.......2006-03-15

"Made For Each Other", a 1939 melodrama from MGM, is pretty standard stuff but what rises it above the usual soapy fare are the two incredibly endearing stars.
John Mason (James Stewart)is a young associate lawyer who, on a business trip to Boston, meets Jane (Carole Lombard). After a day they decide that they were meant to be and marry. Both return to New York, where John will return to work and his quest for partnership, and Jane will adapt to life as a housewife. But problems, as always, stand in the way. First and foremost is John's mother (the always dependable Lucille Watson), who John lived with before his marriage and who will continue to live with John and Jane after their marriage. Mrs. Mason is opinionated and quite used to being the only woman in John's life - - she and Jane butt heads, albeit politely.
Jane attempts to host a dinner party for John's boss and co-workers and problem after problem ensues. The housekeeper quits, they run out of wine and the ice cream for dessert has melted. Add an expected baby to this mix!
The latter part of the film falls prey to soapy melodrama, with a sick baby and waiting on a special serum. But Stewart and Lombard keep their heads above water and keep the movie itself from sinking.
"Made For Each Other" is nothing too heavy and yet it's not fluffy lightness either. It can be characterized as neither a basic comedy nor a serious drama. The film has some comedic moments, as would be expected with Stewart and Lombard in the leads, but the real story is the basic day to day existence and hardships that we all face.
The best part of this film are the two stars. James Stewart is always brilliant playing the Every Man. He is completely believable as the young attorney, wanting to make partner, wanting to provide for his family, but not ask for too much and not alienate his boss. He loves his wife but has obviously been a Momma's Boy for much of his life and doesn't want to hurt his mother's feelings either. His nervousness and fright over first telling his mother that he is now a married man, and then informing his boss that he is married is marvelous and frank. While he doesn't have passionate, electrifying chemistry with Lombard, there is a geniune affection and gentleness there that can't be overlooked.
Carole Lombard, en route to breaking into dramatic roles, is simply luminescent. She is remarkably beautiful in this film, and yet down to earth and earnest as the young wife who is so desperately in love with her husband and desires to be a good wife. Watching her gave me a certain sense of sadness at the fact that she would not live too much longer after this film, and her alleged desire to have a child with her husband, Clark Gable -- a dream that was never realized, except on film.
Overall, "Made For Each Other" is a wonderful showcase for the talents of Stewart and Lombard and sadly, their only film appearance together.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly dimensional 30's comedy-drama.......2005-10-07

Like when attractive Lombard and her co-star Stewart are on the ship in the same bed together! It is very effective the way it seamlessly blends in the elements between the characters we've gotten to know and the medical and airplane people introduced in the last quarter of the film. And to the poster who bragged it was unrealistic due to servants hey some americans actually have servants!

4 out of 5 stars Lombard Shines...Even in Poor Print Transfers.......2006-12-20

Witnessing the luminescence of screen legend Carole Lombard is always a treat, and this bargain-priced two-fer showcases her in two of her most memorable films, 1939's "Made for Each Other" and 1937's "Nothing Sacred". It's unfortunate the print transfers on both films is quite lacking with an excessive amount of graininess and sound pops. However, mere technicalities do not prevent Lombard's charisma and beauty from shining through.

Watching an impossibly young James Stewart teamed with Lombard, then the screen's reigning screwball comedienne, is treat enough in itself, but the 1939 dramedy, "Made for Each Other", directed by John Cromwell has them working overtime on a cliché-bound plot about young, struggling marrieds, John and Jane Mason, who face an unexpected crisis.

The one conceit of 1937's "Nothing Sacred" is how Lombard's stunning glamour, especially in the newspaper photos, seems at odds with the innocent small-town girl she portrays in this screwball comedy classic directed in lickety-split fashion by the two-fisted William "Wild Bill" Wellman. She never lets her beauty get in the way of being funny, and her effervescent manner makes her seem dotty enough to make the crazy situations she gets into believable. Moreover, the film's constant tweaking at the public obsession over a young woman's impending death predates the concept of reality programming by nearly 70 years.

For a movie that clocks in at just 75 minutes, the far-fetched story is fairly dense but clips by without a wasted moment. In brief, Wally Cook is a New York tabloid reporter relegated to the obituaries after his most recent story is exposed as fake. Seeking to rehabilitate his career, he uncovers a story on Hazel Flagg, a woman in rural Vermont dying of radium poisoning. When he arrives in her town, she suddenly learns that her diagnosis was a mistake and that she is not dying at all. However, feeling constrained by her small town existence, Hazel pretends to be terminally ill in order to accept Wally's offer to take her to New York City. In true 1930's fashion, New York pours its heart out to her making her an instant media celebrity. Hazel starts to feel guilty over the misdirected attention, and of course, Wally and Hazel find themselves falling in love amid all the deception and inevitable chaos.

Just coming off his classic dramatic turn in the most cohesive version of "A Star Is Born", stalwart leading actor Fredric March gamely plays the initially cynical Wally with the right everyman demeanor, while Lombard makes Hazel a sublime comic creation even though the character is basically a selfish charlatan. Familiar character actors complete the cast with Walter Connolly in constipated frustration as Wally's constantly boiling editor-in-chief (aptly named Oliver Stone), Charles Winninger properly pixilated as Hazel's fraud of a doctor, and familiar faces like Sig Ruman, Margaret Hamilton, Hattie McDaniel and Hedda Hopper in little more than walk-on parts.

4 out of 5 stars "Tubby, Tabby, Tibby! What kind of name is that anyway?" (recommended).......2007-03-03

Tibby Bloom (Dina Manoff) is a widowed high-speed getaway car driver who polished her skills in crowded Beverly Hills shopping malls were "it's every Mercedes for itself." After being "flossed" by her husband, penniless Tibby becomes maid to her favorite songstress, the garish Jasmine Jones (Nell Carter) who has some personnel issues as a byproduct of her crass personality. While preparing a banquet for a group of prominent producers and investors, Tibby discovers more than cobwebs in the closet. Unwilling to be framed for murder, the further they try to run, the closer they get to one another.

Perhaps one reason why Dina Manoff appears so comfortable in her role is because she is the writer and an executive producer. With a larger budget, this television comedy would have done far better than many of the so-called silver screen Hollywood blockbusters. Despite its grainy television resolution, MAID FOR EACH OTHER will have even the most depressed widowers choking on their Haagen Dazs from laughter. Like MY MOTHER THE SPY, this is great bargain.

Movie quote: "I'm the maid, or I was, and believe me, I would know if there was a dead body in the house. I mean where would we keep it, in the closet?"

4 out of 5 stars cute "Odd Couple" romp.......2005-08-21

Cute "Odd Couple" comedy with Nell Carter and Dinah Manoff. When snooty Tibby Bloom (Manoff) becomes a widow and loses all her money, she has no other option than to get a job. She becomes the maid to sassy singer Jasmine Jones (Carter) whose about to make her big comeback. Complications arise when her husband shows up dead in her house...and all evidence points to Jasmine as the killer, so the girls head out on a race against time to find the real murderer!

Fans of Broadway diva Nell Carter and sitcom darling Dinah Manoff ("Soap", "Empty Nest") will find a lot to love about this entertaining made-for-TV comedy. And the price is pretty good too.

4 out of 5 stars Made for each other goodness.......2005-01-18

    (from the back cover)
When Tibby Bloom's (Dinah Manoff) husband leaves her a grieving widow, things seem bad enough, but when she finds out he's left her with nothing but memories and bills to pay, things quickly get worse! As her only skills are organizing her social calender and the staff who took care of her house, Tibby has no choice by to take a job as a maid for famous singer Jasmine Jones (Nell Carter). The two get off to a rocky start but when Jasmine's husband is found murdered and she is framed for the crime, she turns to the only person who can help her - her new maid!

For this being a tv movie, it actually is a pretty good one. When you have free time on a weekend and want to watch something, this would be the movie to watch.

--N.F. Mendoza
