Editorial Review:
Description
A fascinating alternative to the manic stunt work and elaborate sight gags that distinguish the films of Buster Keaton. "Go West" (1925, 69 min.) offers a rare and satisfying glimpse of his talent for more expressive comedy: charming moments of intimate humor flavored with rich pathos. Setting traditional ideas of romance and masculinity on their ears, "Go West" is uniquely graceful and characteristically hilarious especially in the film's dynamic finale as hundreds of cows are unleashed upon downtown Los Angeles. Included on this DVD is one of Keaton's most mind-boggling mechanical comedies, "The Scarecrow" (1920, 19 min.), which follows two roommates vying for the affection of a young lady. Also added is "The Paleface" (1921, 20 min.), in which Buster helps a Native American tribe defend their land from greedy developers.

Amazon.com essential video
When it comes to long-awaited treats like The Marx Brothers Collection, you can never get too much of a good thing. These seven comedies can't compare to the sheer lunacy of the five classics (The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, and Duck Soup) that the Marx Bros. made for Paramount between 1929 and 1933 (available in The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection), but when uber-producer Irving Thalberg signed Groucho, Harpo, and Chico to an MGM contract in 1935 (by which time sibling costar Zeppo had become the team's off-screen manager), he knew just how to cure their box-office blues. As a result, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races were critical and commercial hits, lavishly produced according to the "Tiffany" studio's golden-age formula of glamorous set pieces and musical numbers combined with sensible plots that smoothly integrated snappy, well-written Marxian antics. Opera is the jewel of this set, with timeless scenes (the Stateroom, the Groucho-Chico contract negotiation, etc.) that rank among the greatest bits of silver-screen comedy... not to mention Groucho's flirtatious insults at Margaret Dumont's upper-crust expense.
A Day at the Races deserves near-equal acclaim ("Get-a your tootsie-fruitsie ice cream!"), but Thalberg's death in 1937 dealt a devastating blow, and the Marxes suffered from studio indifference, resulting in a succession of comedies that are timelessly enjoyable even as they fall prey to diminishing returns. By the time they made Go West and The Big Store, the Marxes were out of their element, and a few of the musical interludes indulge racial stereotypes that were common in the studio era. Despite this, these movies remain fresh and frantic, and Warner Bros. (holder of the RKO and MGM libraries) has done a marvelous job of packaging The Marx Brothers Collection to nostalgically approximate the filmgoing experience of the 1930s and '40s, with vintage shorts (Our Gang, Robert Benchley comedies, MGM cartoons, etc.) from the time of each feature's original release. Archival materials are slim but worthwhile (especially Groucho's 1961 interview with TV talk-show host Hy Gardner), and while Glenn Mitchell's commentary on Races is sparse and superficial, Leonard Maltin brings his usual superfan's enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge to bear on a full-length Opera commentary track. The new documentaries are somewhat redundant, but essential viewing for Marx Bros. neophytes. With all seven films presented in pristine condition, this is definitely a Marx Brothers Collection worth having. --Jeff Shannon
Description
This set includes seven of only thirteen Marx Brothers films ever made! Collection includes: "A Night at the Opera" (1935) - The Marx Brothers turn Mrs. Claypool's opera into chaos in their efforts to help two young hopefuls get a break. It contains the famous scene where Groucho, Chico and Harpo cram a ship's stateroom with wall-to-wall people, gags, one-liners, musical riffs and two hard-boiled eggs. "A Day at the Races" (1937) - Groucho stars as Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a horse veterinarian dispensing horse pills and quips with equal glee. Chico selling racing tips, Harpo destroying a piano to turn it into a harp and favorite foil actress Margaret Dumont make this thoroughbred comedy wall-to-wall hilarity. "A Night in Casablanca" (1946) - This parody of the Bogart/Bergman 1943 classic features the Nazis vs. the "nutsies" as the Marx Brothers foil Axis criminals when they find stolen jewels and paintings Nazis have hidden in a hotel. "Room Service"/"At the Circus" - These two films are combined on one disc to provide double doses of laughter. In "Room Service" (1938), Lucille Ball and Ann Miller provide comic co-star support while the Marx Brothers play producers trying to keep their show above water and a hotel room over their head. In "At the Circus" (1939) Groucho stars as professional shyster lawyer J. Cheever Loophole in the middle of big-top bedlam as the boys try to save the circus and look to Margaret Dumont for the money to do so. Groucho sings one of his famous songs, "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." "Go West"/"The Big Store" - Another Marx Brothers twin bill makes this a hilarious comedy "two-fer." In the first, the Marxmen "Go West" (1940) to the land of outlaws and Indians where the fun never stops and where they outwit a land grabber. In "The Big Store" (1941), Groucho plays Attorney Wolf J. Flywheel who with sidekick Wacky (Harpo) and bodyguard Ravelli (Chico) are investigating the shady dealings of a crooked department store owner. Bonus extras include commentary by Leonard Maltin.

An honest to goodness classic comedy!!!!!!.......2007-06-14
If you want a good clean entertainment and a good laugh, and a classic fun, then the Marx Brothers are for you.
Classics.......2007-05-24
By today's standards, these films are fairly slow-paced in places. Even some of the jokes seem lame in contrast to today's vulgarity. But if you've never seen the Marx Bros at the top of their game, you've gotta see this collection. Fast forward through the occasional sappy romantic bits if you must. Savor the interaction between Harpo and Chico and Groucho. I promise you'll laugh.
still laughing.......2007-05-13
The best of the Marx Brothers comes alive into our living room . I laughed when I was a kid , and now when my Grandchildren come over , they want to watch the Marx Brothers, and I still laugh at their satire . It's as funny now as it was back in my younger years . I'm glad my Grandchildren love them , and I hope their Grandchildren love the Marx Brothers also . It's hard to find good clean entertainment now days , and these movies are classics . I recommend the Marx Brothers for anyone who needs a laugh , and an afternoon for good entertainment .

The Marvelous Marx Brothers Collection!.......2007-03-31
This collection showcases some of the Marx Brothers' biggest film hits. Kitty Carlisle (who was a guest on television's "What's My Line?" in the 1960s) does her own operatic singing in "A Night at the Opera." She is interviewed, with Dom DeLuise and others, in a DVD featurette included in this collection, and talks about that wild, wonderful association with the Brothers. An interview with Groucho Marx reveals the true story of what happened in producer Irving Thalberg's office when he made the mistake of keeping the brothers waiting too long for scheduled meetings! These movies are classics and give today's "movies" more than a run for their money! Well worth ordering, viewing, and treasuring forever.
Got what I wanted.......2007-03-21
I ordered a boxed DVD set and accidently wrote the wrong building number to my address. The process for getting my merchandise could have been better, but Amazon worked with me to insure that I would get my item and keep the discount that I was given for buy several other items. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase.

Barney, BJ, and Baby Bop invite young viewers to accompany them as they visit the Fort Worth Zoo in this 50-minute, never-televised Barney show. Unlike the typical televised episode, this installment is shot completely on location. Absent is the core group of children who interact with Barney--instead, Barney focuses on BJ, Baby Bop, and his young viewers. BJ attempts to chronicle their journey through the zoo with his camera, Baby Bop embarks on a quest to introduce her stuffed elephant Nellie to a real elephant, and Scooter McNutty tries desperately to locate the squirrel exhibit. Barney provides key information about animals like Mandle monkeys, zebras, and flamingos while posing many questions and challenges that invite viewer interaction. Also included is footage of real children discussing and imitating a variety of animals. Eleven fun songs accompany Barney's expedition including "What Will We See at the Zoo," "Rock Like a Monkey," and "Everybody Needs a Nap." The Fort Worth Zoo proves to be a wonderful setting for this innovative Barney episode and the animal photography is close-up and excellent. (Ages 2 to 6) --Tami Horiuchi

LOOOOOVES this.......2007-06-08
As much as I try to control tv watching, my sons (26 month) LOVES this DVD and asks for it "watch Barney?" (he likes Thomas the Tank Engine but asks for Barney more often). He sings along and imitates what they are doing. While I personally don't like Barney, it's a hit with the kids!
Love it!!.......2007-03-09
My son loves this video of Barney at the Zoo. I was hesitant to buy it at first due to the poor reviews listed here but my son just loves Barney and animals so I gave it a try. He has many of the Barney DVDs but this one is definitely one of the better ones. There are a tons of different animals which are helping to teach him to say different and new words. He can watch it again and again and loves it each time like it's new.
You can't go wrong with Barney........2007-02-18
Barney is great for all kids. Good tape. Keeps my 3 yr old quiet on trips.
Great video!.......2007-02-11
This is our daughter's favorite video. She giggles and claps while watching. I'm not a big Barney fan, but I do enjoy the songs on this one. I highly recommend it!
great movie.......2007-01-10
My 21 month old loves to go to the zoo and loves Barney so we thought this would be perfect for her and it is ! She loves it and wants to watch it all the time.

Product Description
Sexy and curvaceous Hollywood icon Mae West made a name for herself with the five films gathered here. MAE WEST: THE GLAMOUR COLLECTION includes the films NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, I'M NO ANGEL, GOIN' TO TOWN, GO WEST YOUNG MAN, and MY LITTLE CHIKADEE. See individual descriptions for details.
Format: DVD MOVIE

The triumph of personality is beautifully demonstrated in Mae West: The Glamour Collection, a bundle of five comedies featuring the never duplicated (if often imitated) Ms. West. Never altering her insouciant, sexed-up persona, Mae West sashays through these films like a tour guide in a well-lit bordello, cheerfully cracking herself up with a series of perfectly-timed one-liners. Since she wrote her own material, there was no separation between the lady (what a feeble word) and her scandalous dialogue.
If you doubt this, check out Night After Night, her film debut. The first half of the picture is an unremarkable gangster comedy: George Raft in his usual inert form, Constance Cummings the good girl, capable comic support from Roscoe Karns and Alison Skipworth. Then West blowses in, and it's all over. Within a minute she's tossed off an eternal signature line (hatcheck girl: "Goodness, what beautiful diamonds." West: "Goodness had nothin' to do with it, dearie") and disrupted the high-class aims of gangster Raft. The other actors look agog at this unapologetic force of libido. Watching this, you might recall the first time you ever saw Groucho Marx or Bill Murray on film--the movie itself disappears, replaced by gratitude that someone like this exists.
I'm No Angel followed her first starring vehicle (She Done Him Wrong, not included here), and its lunatic plot--Mae as a lion tamer taken up by New York society--does nothing to slow the barrage of sexual innuendo. West hums her way through the film with the kind of confidence that must have inspired countless fans to try something disreputable. Cary Grant is the bemused recipient of West's attention. Goin' to Town is nearly as good, as dance-hall gal Mae inherits an oil fortune, then sets her cap for the haughty Englishman working on her, uh, wells. West's style is undiminished (she was in her mid-forties already), although by this time the Production Code--concocted in part as a horrified response to her first films--was trimming her entendres.
Tamer still is the tongue-in-cheek Go West Young Man, although the spectacle of West (playing a "temperamental" movie star) leering after hunky Randolph Scott is pleasant. My Little Chickadee, made at Universal after her run at Paramount ended, is the legendary pairing with W.C. Fields. It's full of great bon mots from both drawlers, even if the sum is less than its parts. Disapproving Margaret Hamilton tells Fields of West, "I'm afraid I can't say anything good about her." Fields replies, "I can see what's good, tell me the rest." These five films are a good introduction to the rest. Beulah, peel me a grape. --Robert Horton

MORE MAE.......2007-05-24
I'm a big Mae West fan and this collection is terrific. My favorite Mae film is I'M NO ANGEL. I enjoy all of these titles and I've always thought MY LITTLE CHICKADEE is under-rated. I look forward to a second collection featuring BELLE OF THE NINETIES.
Written in my best Mae West impression .......2007-04-24
Boys, some of us are growing old here waitin' for the good stuff.
It's better than nothing.......2007-01-30
This is not the DVD treatment the real fans were hoping for. Far more lavish boxed sets and retrospectives have been put together for lesser talents from the past!
I've long suspected that the current owners of her films are oblivious of her cult potential, as shown by the long non release status of her films, and the general lack of a marketing plan that befits such a unique property. Much of the disappointment with this DVD set stems from the lack of obvious "star treatment".
Like the title suggests, it's better than nothing (i.e. non-release). We are going to buy this collection, because there is no better alternative.
I hope "they" come to their senses and do it better in the future. What this woman's memory deserves is:
1) A full boxed set with ALL of her films from 1932-1940, each on its own individual DVD disk.
2) Extras on each disk, including shorts, stills, historic materials and critic commentary.
3) For the copyright holders of these films to get a better clue and figure out how to rekindle this star's cult status.
Buy this crummy set! If you don't, then the powers- that- be will not have the $ incentive to consider repackaging her better in the future!
MY MAE WEST.......2007-01-23
MAE WEST WAS ONE OF THE MOST GREAT HOLLYWOOD ICON, I LOVE HER BEHAVIOR AS A WOMAN AND HER ACTING ...FOR ME IS NO ACTRESS TODAY THAT COMPARE WITH HER ...I LOVE OLD HOLLYWOOD , THE ACTORS AND ACTRESS CHARM IN THOSE TIMES WERE UNIQUE, SHE WAS A LEO LIKE ME , AND I KNOW THE MEANNING " WHATEVER LEO WANT ,LEO GETS" AND SHE WAS RIGHT ON THAT...IM A STRONG FAN OF HER AND NO HOLLYWOOD ICON TODAY WILL ABLE TO REPLACE MY MAE WEST ...NONE
Mae West looked like the gangster's moll to top them all..........2007-01-10
"Night After Night" was an otherwise unmemorable George Raft opus of the early 1930's... The scene was the entrance to a nightspot...
Enter Mae West, magnificently dripping in so much jewelery it must have given the lighting cameraman several heart attacks in his attempts to "damp it down" so that it didn't "flash up the bottle" as she moved...
Cries the hat-check girl: "Goodness, what beautiful diamonds!"
Mae West: "Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie."
Gangsters' molls... they are part of the legend of the mobster movie... And in "Night After Night" it was never openly established just what kind of a dame Mae West was playing, but with all those rocks she looked like the gangster's moll to top them all...

Buster Keaton was arguably the cinema's first modernist, an old-fashioned romantic with a 20th-century mind behind a deadpan visage. His films brim with some of the most breathtaking stunts and ingenious gags ever put on film, all perfectly engineered to look effortless. And, as Kino's magnificent 11-disc boxed set The Art of Buster Keaton conclusively shows, they are among the funniest ever made. Keaton warped gags until they left the plane of reality in such shorts as The Playhouse (1921) and The Frozen North (1922), and takes a logic-defying leap into the very nature of cinema itself in his hilarious Sherlock Jr. (1924). He takes on the mechanical world with Rube Golberg ingenuity in The Navigator (1924) and perfects his match between man and massive machine in Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928), which features the funniest hurricane scene ever put to film, and The General (1927), one of the greatest comedies of all time.
In addition to the previously released 11 features and 19 shorts from the peak of Keaton's career, this set boasts the exclusive Keaton Plus, a collection of rarities and tributes. The greatest find is the long-lost ending to Hard Luck (1921), now restored to complete the film's final inspired gag. Other highlights include newly discovered scenes from Daydreams (1922) and The Love Nest (1923), entertaining excerpts from Keaton's 1951 TV show Life with Buster Keaton (he's still got it!), and his rare dramatic turn in the 1954 television play The Awakening. --Sean Axmaker

Genius.......2007-05-18
SO glad I spent literally half a paycheck on this collection . Keaton was , quite simply , brilliant . His amazing stunts and incredible agility put so many present-day actors to shame . As for that signature "stone face"....The man could say so much more with his eyes than any spoken words could ever express . Truly unsurpassed talent .
Buying Asian versions.......2007-01-10
I know spending $100 seems expensive when you can buy an Asian copy on eBay for $30 or $40. But when you do that, nothing is going to David Shepard to compensate him for acquiring these films, transfering them to video, doing some restoration, and adding a sound track. Even if these films are in the public domain, they don't save themselves. It takes time and money to do that. Please help preserve our rapidly disintegrating silent film heritage and buy the DVDs produced by the people doing the work of preservation.
In Buster Keaton's memory!.......2006-11-02
Buster Keaton still remains among the most reduced and even exigent list of the greatest exponents of the comedy genre.
It has been a common place to establsih the comparison between his craft and Charlot, and in this particular if I was inquired, I would say the main virtue of Keaton's grandess and obviously his personal landmark, is the kaleidoscopic vision he always around the characters and situations; while Charlot turned around the sentiments and the hope for a new and promising future, Keaton showed a demolishing narrative speech, hovered by a corrosive humor, deeply human but extremely devastating.
On the other hand, the resource economy and the emblematic expression of his facial grimace was another engaging tool to captivate the audiences.
I admire both of them and consider they represent the two sides of the same coin. Humanity above any other artistic considerations or sharp differences, was in last instance, the common denominator around these two genius of the intelligent humor.
A must for the hard collectors.
Reeeealy close, but not quite a cigar.......2005-11-03
First off, Keaton is one of the great artists of all times, and it's a joy to have such a complete collection of his silent work. (His last few silents, The Cameraman and Spite Marriage, and his sound films are a far cry from Keaton's best, and I suggest leaving them alone unless you're the absolute completist.) Kino has done a superb job on the features, restoring them to the best they've looked in decades and adding funny, unobtrusive musical scores. A perfect 5 here.
So what's not to like? I am saddened by the treatment of the shorts on these discs. They have *not* been restored, and my impression is that they were taken from 16mm prints with wildly variable (and often quite poor) soundtracks. Keaton's shorts are every bit as wonderful and fascinating as his features, and for Kino to foist these second-rate prints off on us makes me sad.
If I could, I'd give 4.5 stars for this collection. Be prepared for a bit of a disappointment when running the shorts.
Contents of the set.......2005-09-25
Before anything else, I agree with those who say that Keaton's shorts are all good; but I strongly disagree with those who say that they are better than his better features. What usually happens with comedy is that people sit down before the screen and just say: OK, make me laugh. Keaton's features are funny -but they are also, and more important, beautifully shot, superbly acted and perfectly structured -which is something only the best actors/directors can put all together. There are no cheap sets like in most movies of the 20's. Keaton's characters move in the real world, with real things, and that's part of what makes them lasting and unique.
In your shelves, Keaton shouldn't share his place with the Marx Brothers, but with Orson Welles (who called The General the best movie ever made about the Civil War) and Martin Scorsese (who said he watched over and over the final fight in Battling Butter -which, by the way, is not supposed to make you laugh, but to surprise you with it's realism)
Now, this are the complete contents of this DVD set. Aside from it, you should check out The Buster Keaton Collection, which includes THE CAMERAMAN, SPITE MARRIAGE and FREE AND EASY - and then you are done. Well, you could also read the only book he wrote -My Wonderful World of Slapstick. (June '06 Update: "Industrial Strength Keaton"(DVD) just came out. The set includes rare industrial films, promotional films, commercials, TV appearances and outtakes.)

Description
Groucho, Chico, Harpo - all certifiably wacko in a double dip of comedies. The Marxmen Go West (Side A) to where the sun always shines, the fun never sets and where they outwit a land grabber. Highlights include the $1 scam, the stagecoach ride, Chico and Harpo bellying up to the bar and the train-chase finale. What fools these mortals be and what fuels they need. The boys chop up passenger cars to get wood to stoke the locomotive. They go east in The Big Store (Side B), becoming detectives-cum-bodyguards for a department store. Crime is afoot in the store or, if in the Fabrics Department, by the yard. Still, our sleuths don't have a clue except in laughing matters. Chico and Harpo share a piano keyboard, beds disappear into walls, roller skates provide in-store mobility and Groucho warbles Sing While You Sell. Sold!

A sporadically good showcase, but mostly for completists.......2007-05-07
There are Marx Brothers Classics out there and Go West isn't one of them, although longtime afficionados who must have read negative reviews of their latter films somewhere along the way, might be very surprised at the number of clever, successful gags, and energetic performances by the comedy legends.
The somewhat complicated plot (feature comedies in the '40s were big on plots with bad guys and young lovers who are threatened by them and seek the aide of the starring comedy team) involving the search for gold, land deeds, corrupt sheriffs, and a few other things, actually involves the stars (they're not used as "comic relief", a typical device of the times).
The problem is that the good stuff sometimes over-milked, for example, the climactic scene of the Marxs' attempt to keep the train chugging by breaking up the train into little pieces and tossing them into the engine, needed a strong comedy director and editor to keep it from getting tiresome.
There's an entertaining musical number near the end of the film in which Groucho sings and plays guitar - always fun for the fans. Unlike the scene in "Horse Feathers" in which Groucho sings and plays for Thelma Todd, unfortunately the booming baritone of John Carroll is also heard, along with Chico, and a great chance is lost. Okay, Carroll is the handsome co-lead (?) but the credits list GM first, and let's assume that most fans paid to watch Mr. Marx. [Speaking of production numbers, in the 1947 "Copacabana" with Groucho, at center stage he performs a number originally written for Go West!].
Of course, there are depressing aspects to this film, which can be expected for the period - a sequence in which the boys and the lovers stop off on the trail on a Native American "reservation", and, hence, the stereotypically cliched dialogue and situations. However, something miraculous happens, Harpo happens upon a stringed object, transforms it into a harp and plays in duet with the "Chief", who plays a woodwind instrument - it's actually a great scene, which fades with the latter placing his hand gently on Harpo's shoulder. One of those rare, touching moments; the brothers were quite capable of injecting pathos into the proceedings when the moment was right.
The Big Store is contemporary - this time the Marxs' help the lovers retain a huge department store, despite tentative credentials as store detectives. Here's another one which has some good bits and pieces, contrary to the generaln consensus of film critics. We don't have over-milked gags as much as one lost opportunity after another; some of that disappointment actually due to the fact that surreal comedy was really a thing of the past by 1941. For example, in The Big Store we find Groucho asleep in the bed department. The effect is ruined by one of the supporting actors prefacing the scene with mention that Mr. Flywheel was up all night examining the books and it was okay for him to sleep there. Another scene has Harpo dressed in Revolutionary War era attire and playing the harp in duet with himself - a beautifully crafted scene. But, alas, it was in his imagination.
Margaret Dumont is on hand and she's always a pleasure to watch - she's given some decent dialogue in a typically wild courtship scene with you know who.
Both Go West and The Big Store have plenty of music, and that's not a negative, as they successfully showcase the performing talents of the Marxes. It's really astonishing to note that they could perform all kinds of comedy, plus play classical music quite impressively, even kick up their heels - Flywheel's dance moves are absolutely balletic in the otherwiseoverdrawn, impossible "Sing While You Sell" number. The viewer/fan can make up his/her mind with both entries as to whether they're watching a musical comedy, a comedy with music, a comedy, or....the Marx Brothers. For deep fans there will be a plethora of coulda-shoulda(s) - both features are in a completely different cosmos from "Duck Soup". DVD Extra Features are entertaining for both fan and historian, including an apparent radio promo/sketch for Go West.
For the love of Groucho.......2007-02-13
You might have to be a fan already, but Go West's train chase is positively worth the price of this copy as well as one of the funniest on film.

Customer Reviews:
Keaton's most lyrical and surreal comedy .......2006-07-29
In his memories Luis Buñuel mentions Keaton's films as the surrealist group's favourite comedies: " Go west" is not an exception, and what's more, it inspired a little play to Lorca and a delicious surreal poem to Rafael Alberti. A young man whose precarious economic situation forces him to move permanently decides to go West to make fortune after a brief and discourageous stop in the overpopulated New York. He accidentaly arrives to a ranch in the middle of the desert and try to make a living as cowboy. With a cow named "Brown eyes" as his best friend he'll try everything to avoid that his "lady" be carried to the slaughterhouse.
" Go West " is at time the most subversive and lyrical of all Keaton films. In it Keaton satirizes western movies' platitudes and dynamites many topicals of romantic melodrama through the unusual "romance" between the protagonist and his peculiar female partner ( a cow ) and the use of discontextualization techniques. He introduces too one of the most sarcastic and fine satires against the law and order forces and the practice of all kind of authority ( and now we can understand why the group leaded by André Breton adored this movie ): the climactic slapstick scene in which Keaton try to take the cattle through the streets of Los Angeles provoking the panic of the citizens and the hilarious chase with the cops running away of the cattle unable to stop the angry herd and stopped by the water of the firemen ( for Keaton is obvious that the truly menace are the cops ) figure for me as one the most memorable and subversive moments in film history. But under this comic scenes we find a a dark and disaffected satire about human condition: in many ways " Go west " reminds me Werner Herzog's " Stroszek ". As Bruno Stroszek, the character who plays Buster is an uprooted: he moves from a quiet provician town to the convulsed and dishumanized New York to finally try to get his place in a ranch in the middle of the desert where the hard work and climate do people also tough: so, surrounded by this " fauna ", our sensible hero 'll find in a cow his closest allied . For other part, the abstract landscape of the desert and the habitual use of long shots emphasizes the solitude of the character, an exiled in the " promised land " . In short, surreal poetry and subversive humour in this untemporary and beautiful movie.
Kino DVD edition of this film also contains two splendid Keaton shorts: " The paleface " (1920), probably the first pro-indian "western" in film history and " The scarecrow " (1920), one of the best Keaton's two-reels comedies with an hilarious chase with Buster disguised as a scarecrow and an unforgettable comic scene in which take part ingenious gadgets the protagonist couple has invented to do most bearable the housework.
Nice mix of Keaton themes.......2006-04-26
The two short films and one feature in this set span four years (1922-25) of Buster Keaton's rise as a comic film star. They amply illustrate that, of all the great comics, Keaton was able to mine visual humor from the widest range of situations. The Scarecrow, the earliest of the three, is a charming, innocent romp, from a mechanized "house with all rooms in one room", to a love triangle with Joe Roberts and Sybil Seely, to a wild chase involving Luke the dog (who was at his best either chasing someone or being chased), to a happy climax involving a wedding ceremony on a motorcycle. The style and pace of this film is not far removed from the Fatty Arbuckle-Buster Keaton period just completed, and Joe Roberts, Buster's rival, suggests Fatty at least in girth, if not in comic style. It is a perfectly charming and often very funny outing. By the way, the scene in which Buster disguises himself as a scarecrow was used later by Max Linder in Be My Wife.
The Paleface, from 1922, shows more maturity and coherence. The chases here are more refined; for example, Buster eludes his pursuers by moving a bridge, piece by piece, between two mountains. Hilarious sight gags abound, as when after Buster escapes being burned at the stake by wearing asbestos underwear, he casually pulls out a cigarette but can't find a match! This film also has more of the Keaton character's persona: a victim of nature, machine and being at the wrong place at the wrong time, he perseveres by creative use of his environment, as well as his physical grace and athletic prowess.
Go West, from 1925, shows how as Keaton moved into features, his films sometimes took on more dramatic, even darker themes. One recurring theme here is Buster caught in a "stampede", either people, cattle, horses, or barrels on a moving freight train. Many shots of Buster are from a distance, standing alone in a field against a distant backdrop. The mood suggested here is a lonely lost individual trying to survive with no friends and no prospects. Unlike Harold Lloyd in a film like the Freshman, Buster's character does not conquer by winning society over to his ways; he wins alone, in this case, successfully leading a cattle drive single-handedly through the streets of Los Angeles! Buster's love interest, Brown Eyes the cow, only increases the sense that his character is incapable of attracting human friendship, that each relationship with a human will be one of conflict. This film does not have the optimistic charm of The Three Ages or Our Hospitality. It has funny moments but the enduring appeal of this film is mostly figuring out how "Friendless" Buster can escape the endless abuse of man and nature. The result is a classic comedy of a unique kind.
You simply can't go wrong owning this set.
Bizzare stuff from the Bus man.......2004-07-18
This is one of the Bus man's strangest films. Our man, for reasons never made clear, is known as "Friendless" and is so despised that when he puts his arm around a dog, the dog walks away in disgust. Following Horace Greely's famous saying "Go west young man," he does that and even though he can't milk a cow or saddle a horse, somehow gets a job as a cowhand. Still abused by all of mankind, he does an "androcles and the lion" bit (as he did in "Three Ages" with a lion) with a cow named "Brown Eyes" and and last finds a friend. I'll let you see the rest for yourself. But this is really strange stuff, and the ending ("I Want her." You'll see what I mean.) will leave a particularly odd taste in your mouth.
Go West, Young Man, Go West!.......2004-02-09
GO WEST provides cinema with one of its most surreal moments ever: Buster Keaton, dressed as Satan, riding a cow through the streets of downtown Los Angeles, being pursued by a large herd of angry cattle. I thought I'd mention that right up front, so that people know what they're getting in to.
This is a rather sweet film. The driving force behind it is the relationship formed between Buster Keaton's character and a cow named Brown Eyes. Keaton removes a troublesome pebble from Brown Eye's foot, and Brown Eyes saves Keaton from being trampled by a bull. They become firm friends afterwards. Yes, I know that this sounds like something out of a nauseating children's movie, but the whole thing is obviously played for laughs. While it's silly, it never becomes overbearingly so.
After a quick criss-cross dash around the country, Keaton eventually ends up in the Wild West. Dressed as a cowboy (although he forgoes the usual cowboy hat in favor of his trusty porkpie), he quickly goes about subverting many Western clichés. There's the tense poker-game with the cheating scoundrel, of course (where the Great Stone Face finds himself flummoxed when told to smile), and the exciting shoot-outs (where Buster is equipped with a ludicrously small weapon).
As with Keaton's SEVEN CHANCES, the big payoff comes in the final third. But instead of enraged would-be brides, Keaton alternatively herds or flees from hundreds of cattle running through city streets. Cows run people off the road. They create chaos in barbershops and department stores. Let's face it: cows are funny.
One thing I didn't like about this release was the reliance on sound effects. Silent films don't require cymbal crashes during gun battles, nor do slapstick pratfalls scream out for "hilarious" comedy musical riffs. Still, the picture looks quite nice.
THE SCARECROW (the first of the two shorts also included on the disc) is a film that you've seen parts of, even if you've never watched a silent short before. This is the one with Buster Keaton and his large roommate (played ably by Joe Roberts as a nice guy rather than his usual "heavy" role) sharing a mechanized apartment and attempting not to share the farmer's daughter. With utensils and gadgets hovering over their kitchen table, suspended by strings and counterweights, the pair eat their meals in a wonderfully choreographed display of swinging salt and pepper shakers, torpedoing bottles and revolving bathtubs. The rest of the film is composed of various chases: Buster running from a dog, Buster running from the farmer and Joe Roberts, and Buster and the farmer's daughter running from the farmer and Joe Roberts. Wonderful stuff.
THE PALEFACE isn't exactly the most sensitive portrayal of the Native American people that you'll see. Er, I'll leave that aspect of the film at that (though it should be noted that the bad guys are the white corporate types who try to throw people off their land). This isn't nearly as strong a film as the other short on this disc, but it's certainly got some good sequences to offer. The obligatory chase scenes are quite fun. The picture quality is fairly good throughout most of it, but there are a handful of individual camera shots where the image goes completely fuzzy and blurred. I imagine that some sort of reconstruction from various sources was involved.
GO WEST might not be the film that's more representative of Keaton's work, but you'd have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy it. The two short films are quite funny; THE SCARECROW should be required viewing for anyone interested in what made the silent short such an enjoyable art form. GO WEST, young DVD-collector, GO WEST!
A film for Buster's fans.......2001-01-20
Go West is not out one of Keaton's very best films, but this DVD should still be a must for Keaton fans. After all, gradually one wants to collect them all. Go West is not consistently funny nor ingenious and thus cannot really compare with either The General or Our Hospitality. Nevertheless, it has many brilliant moments. I particularly enjoyed the parody of the 'smile when you say that' scene from The Virginian. How is stoneface Buster going to smile? His solution is another parody, this time of Lilian Gish in Broken Blossoms. The best thing about this DVD however, is not Go West but the short film The Scarecrow. This is both extremely clever and funny. It is among the very best of Keaton's films. As far as I'm concerned it is worth the price of the DVD on its own. The final short film The Paleface I found the least interesting part of this DVD. The story, even within its own terms, did not quite hang together. Even so, once again, it has moments of great comedy. The quality of the prints on this DVD are fine while the music is appropriate and well played. This DVD is probaly not the best place to start for those new to Keaton's films. However, for those fans who are building a collection it should not be ignored.

Join Barney and the gang on a never-televised journey into the fascinating world of transportation. When Robert bends a wheel cleaning his grandfather's old bike, Barney suggests the kids visit with his friend Pop Wheelie. Pop absolutely loves wheels and anything that has to do with transportation--and he just happens to run a wheel factory colorful enough to be reminiscent of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. As Pop's magical machine cranks out a new wheel for Robert's bike, Pop lets Barney and the kids test new wheels for his bus, ship, train, and planes as they learn about street and bike safety along the way. Lots of fun songs like "Wheels on the Bus" and "Down by the Station" accompany the kid's animated journeys and soon they're back in the tree house putting the finishing touches on Robert's newly renovated bike. (Ages 1 to 7) --Tami Horiuchi

No Fast Forward???.......2006-12-23
Yes, like others have already said, my kids love Barney. To be honest, I've enjoyed watching previous Barney DVD's myself as the songs are catchy and fun and I think generally there are some good things in there for kids. But I have to say that I am extremely disappointed with this DVD. I guess the producers thought it would be cute to take away the ability to do anything but play the DVD. Any attempt to fast forward or skip simply starts the DVD back at the beginning, effectively forcing you to sit through all of the previews and advertisements in order to get to the actual Barney episode. IMO, this is bordering on arrogance. Well, so sorry to the producers of Barney, but you don't decide what I watch. And you certainly don't decide what my kids will watch. I'll not have you shoving your advertising down my throat or theirs. This will be the last Barney DVD you ever sell to my family.
Sincerely,

A DVD which may as well be a VHS tape.......2003-10-14
Barney is always great and a big hit with my daughter. However, I would not recommend this particular DVD, if you buy DVD's due to the many wonderful features, such as playing just the songs, skipping adverts and going directly to certain chapters. This DVD has none of these features, so you may as well buy the VHS version. It has some wonderful songs, and is fairly entertaining, however, I would not buy it again, and now make sure that the DVD's I purchase allow us to play just the songs, or select certain chapters. Usually my 17 month old gets bored with the dialogue and wants only to see the songs. If they revamped the DVD, it would probably get 5 stars.
A kid pleaser.......2003-05-18
To start with - being an adult, I really hate Barney! He's extremely annoying. However, when a DVD can't be taken out of the player because it's always in demand, you have to give it a good rating. The songs are catchy, and the kids seem to be enjoying themselves. My son loves the wheels, and boots, and the bus especially.
The big problem with it is that you can't skip past the advertisements at the beginning of the DVD, and after you see them once you certainly don't want to see them all the time. You also can't easily skip forward to pick a special song, or back to replay songs, because the DVD doesn't support this feature. Using the fast forward and rewind gets to be a chore when the DVD is so popular.
Recommended that you put it on, and then get out of earshot as quickly as possible.
Fun with Wheels!.......2003-01-27
My son got this for his 2nd birthday, and asks to watch it all the time! He loves wheels and things that go round, so this is perfect! In no time at all, he has learned the songs and sings along. He really likes the story line, and enjoys all the different things that Mr. Wheelie has that use wheels. This is one that never leaves the DVD player. Only wish is that it had a menu so that you could skip the promos - we Fast Forward through them.
Interesting.........2002-10-18
It took a while for my 2.5 yr old to like this DVD. It's more educational for slightly older kids than some of Barney's other works which are simple & musical. There are several familiar songs but the basic concept for this DVD is "methods of transportation". Colours are vividly portrayed as well as graphics which is nice to see. Either way your child may like this. Worth a try!

After Keitaro and Naru fail the entrance exam for prestigious Tokyo University--she for the first time, he for the third--they set off independently for Kyoto to think about life. They meet on the train after breaking their glasses, fail to recognize each other, and become fast friends--until an optometrist resets their lenses. The recognition scene feels improbable, even by cartoon standards, but their new friendship suggests future complications for this popular romantic comedy. The stand-out episode on the collection is the very funny "Kendo Girl": man-hating martial artist Motoko dreams herself into an old video game that spoofs Sailor Moon, El Hazard, and other anime series. The Dragon Palace and giant turtle are references to the Japanese folk tale "Urashima Taro," which plays off Keitaro's last name, Urashima--jokes American viewers may not catch. Rated 13 Up: Comic violence, risqué humor, tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

A solid anime adaptation of a great manga.......2006-03-17
Love Hina. An anime based on the manga series by Ken Akamatsu.
INTRODUCTION:
In recent times, I was introduced to the Love Hina manga - and I fell in love with it instantly. Ken Akamatsu's romantic comedy series quickly became one of my favorite mangas. It had all the right elements to keep things interesting - interesting characters that were numerous, cool storylines, a ton of comic relief - pretty much everything I could ever want in a manga series. Naturally, like with most manga series, Love Hina was turned into an anime. And as with any manga/anime conversion, there were some changes. Just the same, though, how did the anime work out? Read on for my review and find out!
OVERVIEW:
Essentially, this is the manga to anime adaptation of Love Hina. The anime version of the series consisted of twenty-five half-hour episodes, as well as several specials that followed.
STORYLINE:
The storyline behind the Love Hina anime is essentially the same as the Anime, despite some differences. It follows the life of Keitaro Urashima, a guy in his late teens/early twenties who is so pathetic, you can't help but feel sorry for him. He's failed the college entrance exams numerous time, and been exiled from his home. Not to mention the fact that he has no talents whatsoever. To study for his next attempt at the exams, he takes shelter at the Hinata House, an old hotel owned by his grandmother. But once he arrives, he gets a rather rough welcome. It has been converted to a girls dormitory - and the residents aren't at all thrilled that he has showed up. Fate takes a rather odd twist, though - his grandmother (who is out wandering the world) makes him manager of the house. But with girls who like him half the time and hate him half the time, he's really no better off than before. The girls include a sweet, smart girl with an occasional mean streak, who Keitaro suspects may be the girl he made a promise with as a child, a shy and often depressed middle school girl with a talent for cooking, a mysterious foreign middle-school aged girl with tons of energy, a man-hating sword master, and a freelance writer who is always either drinking too much or blowing her money betting on horse races. With such diverse personalities and entertaining storylines, it's a series that will keep you coming back and wanting more.
REVIEW (SERIES):
Overall, I am very satisfied with the anime adaptation of Love Hina, but I still feel the manga version is far superior. The manga has scenes the anime doesn't and vice versa, but most of the anime-only scenes/episodes are fillers. As such, people who only watch the anime but don't read the manga are going to miss out on some major storyline elements. Likewise, the anime is less graphic than the manga, probably due to television content restrictions and such. I strongly recommend checking out the Love Hina series, but keep in mind - watching the anime is no substitute for reading the manga in its entirety!
REVIEW (DVD):
There are two different versions of the series that have been released on DVD in the states. One version features discs sold separately for roughly twenty-five dollars, which include four episodes and bonus material. The other versions contain eight episodes per disc, are sold only as a "complete series" set (to my knowledge), and the only bonus features are trailers for other animes. Since it's cheaper, I recommend the latter set. However, it's also tougher to find, so be warned (try eBay.) Both versions feature the uncut subtitled version, the way the series was meant to be enjoyed. The dub cast is hit and miss (why the hell did they give Kitsune a southern belle voice!?), so thank the maker for the original Japanese audio track.
OVERALL:
In the end I am very satisfied with the anime adaptation of this series. No, it doesn't surpass its manga counterpart (animes really do), but it's still a great series. If you want a good anime that will give you romantic elements and comic relief galore, you'll get them both here! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! But don't forget to read the manga too!
EDITION NOTES:
The four-episode DVDs of the series, and the "perfect collection" box remain readily available in most stores with an extensive anime collection. Sadly, these items are a rip-off pricewise (twenty-five bucks for four episodes doesn't satisfy me.) Take my advice - go online and hunt down the cheaper, complete series set.
we LOVE this series!.......2005-08-14
I started watching anime in my 20s, mostly things my (male) friends watched like "Bubblegum Crisis/ Bubblegum Crash", "A.D. Police", and anything "Lupin". My husband recently bought the "Witch Hunter Robin" which we both really enjoyed. He also got "Last Exile" but I didn't care for that as much.
The types of anime series I really liked were about romance/love & relationships, and it helped if there was also some humor. Things like "Urusay Yatsura", or "Kimagure Orange Road" were my fav's. Now I love watching mostly any of the "Hayao Miyazaki" works with my teen-age daughter, and we both adore "Love Hina" (we also watched a little "Fruits Basket" together, but it was a bit dark as it went along) My daughter started as a youngster watching "Sailor Moon" and "Pokemon" and still likes them, but she loves things like "Love Hina" now. This 2nd DVD in the series helps move the plot along. (altho' we did cheat a little and have also watched the Love Hina Xmas DVD as well as "Love Hina Again" - and we are going to buy the Spring & Summertime movies as well. Love Hina is just a lot of fun.
Another great dvd to the series!.......2005-05-17
I have owned this dvd for about 2 years now. This has got to be by far one of the best dvds in the series. This brings Naru and Keitaro closer. Keitaro and Naru also happen to meet a new person named Mutsume. Little do they know that she will play a big part in the promise that Keitaro made. The episodes on the dvd happen to be very great and this is a great investment. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys the love hina series to buy this!!!
Volume two of a Terrific Series!!.......2004-06-08
The results of Naru and Keitaro's college entrance exams, a trip to Kyoto, Keitaro's female version, and a Role-Playing game-like episode!
Highly recommended if you enjoyed the first disc.
All about Keitaro..........2004-03-14
Keitaro goes on a vacation, Keitaro's first kiss, Keitaro's true feelings. Must everything be about Keitaro? Sure, he's now manager of the apartments, but he failed his latest entrance exams and seems to have gotten into even MORE trouble than before with Naru (all because they can't see).
Then there seems to be a wild adventure set in a video game world, in which only Motoko seems to be normal or maybe she is the only one who can't get into it?
Add the extras and you have a weird DVD. Love isn't just blind, it's totally twisted!

Excellent concert dvd.......2006-06-27
I have seen two other Go West concerts and various other
footage and have to say this is the best of them all.
The sound quality is amazing and the band is at top form.
Peter Cox delivers such a great performance, and what I
noticed was that his ability to jump from a hard edged
song to a soulful ballad flawlessly. This dvd has in my
opinion the best concert version of S.O.S. I've seen yet.
The band is truly top notch. Contains a really extensive
interview with Peter & Richard that was quite interesting
and at times very funny. To clarify, the out-takes appear
at the end of the show when the credits are rolling. The
history is there also, I've seen it. It's a slideshow type
of image gallery with captions. The song select menu is a
bit strange but after awhile I got used to it. The choice
of songs was perfect. Personally, one of my favorite concert
dvds Remember to play it in 5.1 Surround, the effect is
awesome.
Misleading DVD box!!!.......2006-04-04
The concert footage is great, but...
The DVD case says that the DVD contains an 18th track of "outtakes," and bonus features such as an interview, and a history of the group. I couldn't find any way to access these features from the DVD menu.
