Despite its box-office failure in 1981, Dragonslayer was gradually recognized as one of the finest fantasies to emerge from the post-Star Wars boom in special effects. It's still one of the best adventures of its kind, featuring one of the most fearsome fire-breathing serpents in movie history. Ominously named Vermithrax Pejorative, this ill-tempered monster terrorizes the peasantry of sixth-century England, feeding on maidens sacrificed by a duplicitous king until a sorcerer's apprentice named Galen (Peter MacNicol, long before Ally McBeal) is recruited as a reluctant hero. Aided by a tenacious beauty (Caitlin Clarke) and his resurrected mentor (Ralph Richardson), Galen confronts the soaring beast in a breathtaking climax. Employing a then-innovative technique called Go-Motion to animate the dragon, the special effects are still dazzling, and stunning locations in Scotland and Wales allow director Matthew Robbins (cowriter of Steven Spielberg's feature debut, The Sugarland Express) to maintain a vivid atmosphere for the wealth of movie magic. --Jeff Shannon

Imagine "Jaws" in Medieval Times, except with a Dragon.......2007-04-29
I caught about 10-15 minutes of "Dragonslayer" on TV a few months back, which was my first exposure to this film, and I determined right then and there to eventually purchase it. When I finally bought it I watched it TWICE, something I rarely do.
THE STORY: A medieval kingdom is harrassed by a dragon, apparently the last of its species. The people decide to appease the horrific beast with regular sacrifices of virgin maidens. The virgins are selected through a questionable lottery system. When the King's daughter is picked for sacrifice, the monarch employs a sorcerer's apprentice, Peter MacNicol, to slay the dragon.
"Dragonslayer" takes the "Jaws" route by not fully showing the beast until well into the second hour of the film. Prior to that revealing moment the film expertly builds up a heap of horrific anticipation concerning the creature. The first virgin sacrifice scene is particularly terrifying. When we finally DO see the monster it's definitely not a let down. Many viewers attest that this dragon is the best dragon to ever appear in film, even though the picture was made in 1981.
I've heard some complain that the protagonist, MacNicol, was wrong for the role. Nothing could be further from the truth. He's easy to relate to because he's a flawed human being with naive, boyish qualities, not a larger-than-life superhero (like, say, Conan or Beastmaster). I've also heard some complain that the heroine, Caitlin Clarke, is too "man-ish" looking. Well, duh, that fits into the whole sacrificial lottery plot. When Caitlin ultimately and uncertainly dons a dress and make-up she's woman enough.
The Dark Age sets/costumes/locations really impressed me. If you're in the mood for a top-of-the-line medieval flick with castles, dungeons, forests, villages, fair maidens, kings, sorcerers, etc. this is the one to see.
"Dragonslayer" was an inexplicable flop when it was released in 1981, perhaps due to the glut of similar-themed pictures at the time. Regardless, it can now be treasured on DVD. It took me over 25 years to witness its magnificence but I finally did.
Young Galen has the hots for a girl dressed like a guy.......2007-04-17
Galen goes a trip, when his master is killed.
DRAGONSLAYER: The movie with the best dragon........2007-04-03
I was 9 years old when this movie first came out in 1981, but I never got to see it. DRAGONSLAYER has both excellent production values and outstanding special effects that still hold up very well today. The set locations (Scotland and Wales) I found to be especially beautiful and attractive and very fitting for the medieval feel of the picture. The film's dragon, creatively named "Vermithrax Pejorative", is wholly convincing and adds immensely to the story and, I think, is the STAR of the show. The pyrotechnics (fire effects) are also handled superbly throughout. Dennis Muren was Visual Effect Supervisor for DRAGONSLAYER. The previous year (1980) Muren had worked on George Lucas' THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and the following year (1982) he supervised E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL for Steven Spieldberg.
The only real drawback to the picture, I think, is the casting for the lead; Peter MacNicol. MacNicol's presence as a young dragon-slaying hero is weak and just does not fit him. He's not the hero type. I would've much rather seen someone like Matthew Broderick play the part. The means by which the dragon is destroyed is also disappointing. He's not killed by the DRAGONSLAYER, but by an exploding wizard (?) ... I don't get it. The DVD also does not have any extras, no trailers, no making-of features and no commentaries, just the bare bones. Regardless, the film is worth seeing, if not just for the outstanding dragon effects.
All Hail Vermithrax Pejorative!.......2007-03-28
I was eleven when this film came out, and it was instantly one of my favorites - and still manages to be.
The dragon Vermithrax is hands down the best dragon ever created for film. There has not been a single movie with a dragon since that has managed to create the look and feel of what a dragon should be better than Vermithrax. Reign of Fire's creatures were close, but Vermithrax takes the title.
On that note, I can't help feel sorry for the old girl. Sure, people think she's evil, but really she was just a mother looking out for her young. Little ones gotta eat, y'know. People aren't always the top of the food chain, something we always seem to forget.
A good family movie if your kids are say 11 or older. Yes, there's violence, yes, there's a baby dragon gobbling up a girl (eating through her ankle more specifically) but it's no more violent or gory than the recent LOTR movies.
If you love Dragons, you'll love Dragonslayer.
One of the smallest big-budget films I have seen........2007-02-28
"Dragonslayer" is one of my favorite 1980's fantasy pieces. Sadly, it was obscured by the bigger flicks--"Clash of the Titans," "The Dark Crystal," "Never-Ending Story" and the perennial "Princess Bride,"--plus the other bigger-budget SF films, Star Trek II-V and Star Wars V-VI. For me, I like that it is not the big budget spectacular that the other films were, and did not have the distracting all-star gala-feel that "Titans" had. Similar to the City of Reno, it is the one of the smallest big-budget films I have seen.
Hence, we are treated to two unknowns--Peter MacNicol (Ghostbusters II, Alley McBeal, 24) and Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Darth Sidious) in a "don't blink or you'll miss him" role as Brother Jacobus. Lucas would agree--this enhances the story, since you focus on the film, rather then the distracting game of "Where's Waldo" that familiar faces can breed.
The film is essentially a milieu piece--the faux Middle English middle England that is the basis for all post-Tolkien fantasy. But the theme is the arresting thing: it is about the corrupt leadership that makes a deal with the devil (or the dragon in this story) to keep the peace at the price of a pentannual sacrifice of a fair virgin.
This deal itself is corrupt--suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune instead of taking up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them--but the corruption runs deeper. First, the king and other nobility exempt their daughters, sending the peasant girls instead. Much like wartime drafts.
The second issue is how this set up affects Valerian. When her father disguises her as a boy to avoid the draft-lottery, he inadvertently alienates her from herself and he sexuality. When she dons the dress at the effigy-burning, she embraces who she is, especially her sexuality. The dance with Galen is symbolically obvious.
Lastly, Casiodorus Rex is so base, so superficial that he claims credit for slaying the dragon. In retrospect, this was to be expected.
This film is full of heroics. We have Galan mantleing himself as a wizard--no angst, no refusals of the call, but brash gusto. Valerian courageously end-runs around the corrupt king and hires a dragonslayer. The Blacksmith forges the spear behind the back of said corrupt king. (This is a perfect Daddy-Daughter team-up.) Princess Elspeth gives her life in order to save the peasants--a reverse Marie Antoinette. And then Ulrich the Wizard takes James bond's advice and dies twice to slay the dragon.
The coda-ending was a gag, but the gag worked, since it rounded out the theme of the corrupt system, and Galan and Valrian turning their back to the whole mess, and making their way . . . and with magic in the air.
The special effects still stand up. Instead of doing the Harryhausen stop-motion (as was done in "Titans"), they opted for go-motion, puppetry, and animation. The overall effect is eerily realistic, and aportent of things to come. In fact, the SFX stand up to the next great dragon movie, "Reign of Fire."
The film is rated PG, but I suggest a PG-13 rating, due to the graphic deaths of Princess Elspeth and Brother Jacobus (the gnawing lizardlings and the charred body were too much), and the "revealing" skinny-dipping scene. Parents beware.

While it owes much of its appeal and appearance to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eragon can stand on its own as an enjoyable fantasy for younger viewers. Faithfully adapted from the bestselling novel by teenage author Christopher Paolini, this boy-and-his-dragon tale offers clean, fast-paced family entertainment without compromising the darker qualities of Paolini's novel (the first in what is known as the "Inheritance" trilogy). The plot centers on 17-year-old peasant farmboy Eragon (played by appealing newcomer Ed Speleers) who discovers a mysterious blue object that turns out to be an egg that eventually hatches to reveal Saphira, a blue-scaled dragon that quickly grows to full-size. According to prophecy, Eragon is destined to be a dragon-rider like those who once protected a benevolent kingdom, thus reviving an ancient conflict against the army of King Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a former dragon rider who turned to evil, now in alliance with a! dark-magic "Shade" sorcerer named Durza (Robert Carlyle). While the movie serves up familiar fantasy elements and offers little if anything new to fans of the genre (or anyone who's read the books of Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. Le Guin), it's visually impressive (especially the dragon scenes, with Rachel Weisz providing the telepathic "voice" of Saphira) and full of timeless wisdom, much of it delivered by Eragon's heroic mentor Brom (Jeremy Irons), himself a former dragon rider with memories of past battles and hope for Eragon's future. Add a fair warrior-maiden named Arya (Sienna Guillory) and you've got all the ingredients for a worthwhile (if not particularly original) fantasy that points directly to a sequel. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to individual viewers to decide. --Jeff Shannon

one star for the CG!!!.......2007-07-04
I got this DVD in the combo deal for preview DVDs of Blockbuster: buy 2 get 2 free. I got this together with Pirate 2: Deadman's chest, Ice Age 2, and Happy Feet, all for $30 before tax. Had I read reviews here, I'd not waste time on this. The only thing I can say about this is BAD, BAD and BAD. If you want to view it, better rent it than buy. The actings were horrible, especially the main character Eragon. The guy smiled so much that it's annoying. If you saw Dragon's heart, and LOTR before, you will see a poor immitation in this flick. The special effect is not very much special. The directing is really poor. Remember the grand battle in LOTR: 2 Towers? You'll find something similar here but in a smaller scale and dumber. Why dumber? You'll find a scene when Eragon let his dragon fire everywhere on the ground as she's flying. Of course, lots of enemies are destroyed, but what about the allies engaging in the battle? Not only the screenplay was bad, the ending is really disappointing too! You'll ask yourself, "That's it?!?", since it does not end with an answer or a mystery that leaves a big question mark in your curiousity. It's more like the end of part one, and there'll a sequence (I hope not!).
The DVD was poorly made, not much special feature. I use closed caption of my TV not the DVD, but it did not cap right. This film is only worth for Sci-fi channel. Actors in this films will be in my No-No list.
Not a good movie.......2007-07-03
I had high expectations after reading the book. Far too many important concepts and ideas were left out of the movie which made for a lack of empathy for certain characters. The flat out lack of characterization destroyed the quality of viewing for the movie.
After 10 minutes i had already realized i would be dissapointed and tried to watch the film without relating it to the book. It was far to obvious though that there was major editing done that cut out sections of storyline. There were times i thought "hey, how did the characters get to this point from nowhere?" and there were scenes in the movie that merely wasted time. If they got rid of some of the pointless special effects and put in the simple important concepts then this could have been fantastic.
The acting was just plain horrid though. I consider myself lucky i did not pay the outrageous prices of a theatre to view the movie with friends.
???.......2007-07-01
The book was okay but you could tell it was from a 16 year old. The movie was weird with good special effects only saving it from destrction. Acting was bad. Story was out of there. It was not a good film
This movie was completely awful.......2007-06-26
This movie was nothing compared to the book. It sped through things way to fast and allowed abosolutley no time for character development I gave this movie one star because I thought that it was an awaful movie and would not recomend this movie to anyone.
Era-yawn.......2007-06-26
Honestly, this movie is beyond horrible. Normally I'm not one for the whole fantasy genre of films. The dragon movies of any time are often boring and tedious. One can tell a movie such as this was based upon a book written by an 18 year old.
It's funny how the author has stated he wrote the book because he had read a bunch of fantasy novels and wanted to write one for himself. So what did he do? As this film shows: he just took a bit of EVERYTHING and combined them.
But, back to the film:
The story involves a young boy who is sent a blue dragon egg which he cares for until it hatches. He then learns he's destined to become a "Dragon Rider" based upon some mumbo jumbo legend only Jeremy Irons is privy to.
So he communicates via telepathy with the horredously blatant CGI dragon which shares the screen with him. All the while, Jeremy Irons leads him into danger and either whispers or yells each and every line he's given.
Meanwhile, John Malkovich apparantely portrays a powerful king who rules the entirle land and desperately wants that dragon dead. So he enuciates as much as possible, then sends a half albino/half vampire version of Robery Carlyle to defeat Eragon (our hero boy) with magic.
And so, a legend is 'born' or something and adventure ensues. If I sound bitter, it's mostly because I attempted three times to sit through this movie. I should have taken a hint from my oldest daughter (who adored the book) when she said she fell asleep during the film and never bothered watching it again.
So, in essence, the film is vastly improved with Rifftrax.

Following their animated/live action hit Space Jam, Warner Bros. jumped into the fully animated feature competition by playing it safe, giving the Arthurian legend a conspicuously Disneyesque facelift. Ingredients from Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas are evident in the tale of a girl named Kayley (Jessalyn Gilsig) whose father, a Knight of the Round Table, is killed by Sir Ruber (Gary Oldman), a maniacal brute who steals Excalibur and threatens to seize King Arthur's Camelot. Kayley enlists the blind, reclusive knight-aspirant Garrett (Cary Elwes) to brave the Enchanted Forest and retrieve the magic sword, and their adventure is (of course) fraught with danger. Adding extra punch to the movie's commercial appeal, the soundtrack songs are performed by big names like LeeAnn Rimes and Celine Dion. And if that's not enough to hold a kid's attention, there's a two-headed dragon ("we're the reason cousins shouldn't marry") voiced by Eric Idle and Don Rickles. With so much talent involved, it's entertaining but uninspired, although cleverly harmless riffs from Dirty Harry, Taxi Driver, and other movies spice up the adventure with enjoyable pop-culture references. --Jeff Shannon
Description

Customer Reviews:
Great movie for kids,.......2007-02-13
I bought this for my grandchildren and they love it. They watch it all of the time.
"We are the reason why cousins should never marry.".......2006-09-24
Plot in a nutshell - Baron Ruber (voice of Gary Oldman) wants all the power & wealth in the land, is thus expelled from the Round Table for it, and vows revenge on King Arthur (voice of Bond star Pierce Brosnan) and all who inhabit his realm. Years later, Ruber steals the sword Excalibur and plunges Camelot into chaos. The only hope is Kayley (voice of Jessalyn Gilsig), the plucky, super cute farm girl tomboy teen-aged daughter of a Round Table knight Ruber killed years ago, who manages to rope a blind forester/former stable boy named Garrett (voice of Cary Elwes) and a two-headed dinosaur/dragon mutant (voiced by Don Rickles and Eric Idle) into helping her retrieve Excalibur. Comedy, chaos and mayhem ensues.
Maybe not the best animated feature ever made, but still enjoyable in its old fashioned Disney kind of way. Combination of traditional hand-drawn animation set against CGI backgrounds makes for a beautifully uneven visual feast. Characters are fairly likable and good-natured enough not to annoy anyone.
Based on the book "The King's Dam0sel" by the late Vera Chapman.
Sophisticated production with a Gigantic Heart........2006-05-13
It might be easy for the rushed and hurried to quickly label this gentle animation as just another passable direct-to-video disneylike flick, but hold on, this isn?t one of them. This is a generous, colorful, thoughtful sophisticated movie, which achieved even more than it was intended. Particularly in one scene, which elevates this movie to the epic level.
Kayley, is chased by bad guys, and instead of your typical Indiana Jones like, brass and drums chase scene orchestral score..you are unexpectedly treated with an lovely, gentle, vaguely eerie song, (The Prayer) providing a big contrast with the intense and aggressive horse chase. (and its NOT in slow motion) "I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go...". Instantly you?re really worried with the mother, and those mildy cartoony villains become a real textured menace. They really made this work, and this movie is applause worthy for this scene alone.
Romantic Adventure.......2006-03-21
Quest for Camelot is my favorite movie. I love how a blind man can be so efficient and how a young girl can see him beyond his abilities.
Great Childrens Entertainment.........2006-02-22
I ordered the Quest for Camelot dvd for the wonderful Steve Perry video that was included on the disc. Having never watched the movie before I was pleasantly surprised. My 10 year old loves the movie and she loves the games that are included on the disc.

A good ending to a great series.......2007-05-27
This is easily the best saga in the Dragonball GT series. It had more action than any of the other sagas. This dvd set has 17 episodes which includes the whole shadow dragon saga. It had a lot action and it all wrapped up into a ending that was that great and unexpected. This dvd set has everything a Dragonball fan could want. It has great moments such as Vegeta finally becoming a super saiyan 4 and has the strongest villan ever in the Dragonball series. I recommend this set first before you get anything else. The other three sagas are good but not as good as this one.
Dragon Ball GT - A mixed bag.......2007-05-07
Dragon Ball GT (1996-1997.)
INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z anime had ended. Finally, Akira Toriyama's entire Dragon Ball manga had been translated to anime form. He had lost interest in the series and went on to pursue other projects. But Toei Animation had other plans. The company who had translated the manga to anime form wanted to cash in on the franchise one last time, and thus created an entirely new, non-canonical Dragon Ball series, GT. Read on to see how the series fares.
OVERVIEW (DVD):
FUNimation began releasing Dragon Ball GT DVDs in America in 2003. The series is broken into twenty DVDs (the five "lost episodes" DVDs that start the series, and volumes one through fifteen that follow.) Each DVD is uncut, with a dub and sub track, and some modest bonus features.
OVERIVEW (SERIES):
GT picks up a couple of years after Z leaves off. Goku has been training Oob, the young man he went away with at the end of the tournament that concluded the Z series. But things go terribly wrong. Emperor Pilaf gets a hold of a second set of Dragon Balls that was created back before Piccolo and Kami split - and accidentally turns Goku into a child again! And that's not the worst of it. The Dragon Balls have scattered across the universe! If the balls aren't reunited in a year, the Earth will be destroyed. The universe is full of villains who will stop at nothing to have them for themselves. As the series progresses, other new villains rise, including Baby, a creation of a race the Saiyans once wiped out, Super 17, a fusion of Android 17 and a duplicate created in hell by an old foe, and evil dragons who rise from the old, overused Dragon Balls. But Goku and company aren't going to give up that easily, as Goku discovers a level of Super Saiyan beyond level three that will help him to compete with these new villains.
REVIEW (SERIES):
GT is a hit and miss series. When it sucks, it sucks. When it's good, it's good. You can tell Akira Toriyama wasn't the creative force behind the series, and it shows in many places. The characters seem to have gotten a lot weaker and stupider, and the battle sequences pale in comparison to those of Z (though some of the later ones come close.) One of my biggest disappointments is Pan, Goku's grand daughter. They make her one of the main characters in this series, and she's basically annoying and weak, and spoiled. Essentially she's a retread of Chi Chi, which isn't something the series needed. Vegeta's role is also significantly lessened up until the end of the series, which is a huge letdown for fans of the Saiyan prince. There are plot holes galore, as well. It's clear Toei wanted to make a series that was a combination of the original Dragon Ball's adventure/comedy feel, and Dragon Ball Z's pure action feel. But as a whole, it's a compromise at best. Do yourself a favor and don't come into the series with high expectations - it does not surpass any previous chapter in the Dragon Ball story. Remember - Toriyama didn't create it himself, so it's essentially professionally-made fan fiction. It's not as bad as everyone says, though.
REVIEW (DVD):
If you've seen FUNimation's uncut DVDs for the other Dragon Ball series, you'll know what to expect here. Two language tracks, with the Japanese featuring translations by Steven J. Simmons, as well as modest bonus material (profiles, previews, etc. nothing special.) The dub is not great, though it's not FUNimation's worst work either. I have some complaints with the Japanese subtitled version that need to be voiced though. Kakarotto is translated as Kakarrot. Saiya-Jin is translated as Saiyan. Tsfuru-Jin is Tsfuruian. Oozaru is Great Ape. If they keep in all the name titles (kun, sama, etc.), why can't they keep this stuff straight? Also, old episodes refer to the Dragon Balls as the numbered ball they are, whereas later episodes change it to the weird Mandarin Chinese names. I wish they'd gone one route or the other from the beginning and stayed consistent, not switched halfway through. Still, these are little faults in the long run.
OVERALL:
Overall, GT is a good series but not a great one. It's better than most people say, but still falls short of the original series and Z. If nothing else, it's good for a weekend rental - but you will have to endure some boring, tedious episodes before you get to the good stuff - BE WARNED! Final verdict? If nothing else, GT is at least good for a rental.
EDITION NOTES:
I'm not sure if these DVDs are still in print or not. But just the same, Amazon's independent sellers have all of them in stock, and you can get them for very low prices now - hell, that may be even cheaper than my previous suggestion of renting them!
Overall Review.......2007-01-15
The last saga of the Dragonball GT series seems to be more thought out than the rest of the anime. Out of Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and Dragonball GT, DBZ was my favorite out of all of them. Dragonball Z is a power trip, but more thought out. Dragonball GT seemed rushed and not as good of a storyline. The ending of the Dragonball GT series has an ok ending. I can not say it had a good ending, because through my eyes, it seemed a little bit easy to beat the ultimate Omega Shenron.
The End of a Legacy.......2006-09-08
This box contains the final episodes of Dragon Ball GT. These episodes are known as the Shadow Dragon Saga. I am a huge fan of Dragon Ball, Z, and even GT. I don't like Gt as much as the other two mainly because of the horrible musical score and holes in the storylines, however my one exception to the bad storylines is in this saga.
Ever since Goku met Bulma all those years ago they gathered Dragon Balls and made wishes. Although the wishes were almost always for positive things, negative energy was introduced into the world and was stored inside the Dragon Balls themselves. In the Kid Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z, Elder Kai warns Goku and Vegeta not to use the Dragon Balls because they could upset the natural evolution of the universe. Partly due to this fact, this storyline in Dragon Ball GT is acceptable. They were already hinting at this in Dragon Ball Z.
The idea of the ultimate good becoming your worst enemy is brilliant. Because the humans relied so heavily upon the Dragon Balls, the negative energy inside of them was released in the form of a Black Dragon. This Dragon thus creates Seven Dragons each created from a specific wish. This is the one hole I can't tolerate in this storyline, each Dragon was only made from one wish, but they completely skip over some wishes such as reviving the humans after the Cell Games.
Still, despite this the Shadow Dragons themselves are entertaining and the fights are good even if they are mostly centered around Goku. When only one Shadow Dragon remains, he absorbs all the other Dragon Balls to create the most powerful villain in Dragon Ball histroy. All is not lost however because with help from Bulma, Vegeta has ascended to Super Saiyan 4. Can our heros stop this final evil from destroying the universe?
In the end, Goku vows that the earth will from now on get by without having to use the Dragon Balls. A final scene where Shenron appears without being summoned was absolutely wonderful in the dubbed. He says that the true beauty of the Dragon Balls was knowing that you lived in a world where you didn't have to use them.
Then the Dragon Ball storyline ends with a glimpse into the future as an elderly Pan watches her grandson, Goku Jr., and Vegeta Jr. fight it out at the World Martial Arts Tournament as Super Saiyans. At the Tournament there is a gigantic statue of Goku symbolizing all of his noble deeds. Suddenly Pan thinks she actually sees Goku watching the fight, but never actually sees him. The last scene of the story shows Goku walking away and clips of how our heros destroyed every villain including Frieza, Cell, and Kid Buu.
So that's it for the Dragon Ball storyline. It was a wonderful ride and it changed my life. I love the shows and in my opinion this is the greatest anime ever. I'll wrap up with the final episode title of the show by saying, Until We Meet Again!
DBGT isn't all that bad........2006-08-08
ok, so here is the deal, DBGT i thought was really good, untill the end, it started to weaken, and weaken. now, i recomend whatching the 6-10 boxset becasue i really thought those episodes were a lot more fun than these, but i hate to say it, but i liked these episodes, yes, at times they were VERY boring, but it's the end of the Dragonball Trilogy!
Now this boxset goes through Goku, Pan, and Trunks fighting off monsters made by wishes on the Normal Orange Star Dragonballs from the earlier show Dragon Ball Z! like there is a monster that is made off of the underwear wish! that made me laugh a little! and the opponents get harder and harder! untill Goku is in a strange position.
so anyways, i own the who series, i bought each DVD indivisually when they came out. so i wasted over 400$. i was going to sell them, but thinking about it, maybe i wont.

A different type of Martial Arts film from a Huge Romantic.......2007-06-11
I loved this movie. Wow no more sad or depressing ending!!!! Finally love prevails. I am huge fan of Martial Art movies but someone always dies or misses an opportunity for love. This movie was great.
"Blindie, where's your chicken?".......2007-04-11
'The White Dragon' tells the story of how an overly proud young girl named the Black Phoenix gains the powers of the White Dragon and becomes an [...]. After becoming White Dragon junior, she gets her first pimple and this is heartbreaking for her. Unlike most wuxias, this is more of a comedy. The dramatic scenes are mostly reserved for Francis Ng who plays an [...] himself named Chicken Feathers. While he is blind and his character blatantly copies Zatoichi, it still works because Francis Ng is such a great actor. Chicken Feathers is looking to assassinate the second prince and White Dragon junior loves him so she challenges Chicken Feathers to a duel in order to save the prince. Chicken Feathers wins quite easily yet doesn't kill her. WD junior and the former WD now look to outwit him. She finally realizes Chicken Feathers is a kind person and finds out he isn't quite what he seems to be.
This movie is obviously made in the vein of 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and 'Hero' and the action is somewhat similiar. Luckily, they do put some creativity into it and it is quite good. I don't like "wire-fu" that much, except when it's done right like in this movie. The action is very sparse, but good when it happens.
What makes this so different is the odd comedy and mixing in modern day life like rollerblading. The modern day injected moments don't work, but I liked the comedy very much. There is a scene at the beginning of the movie that is hilarious where WD junior is playing various instuments and ends her show by slamming a stringed instrument up against a wall like Jimi Hendrix. I also loved the scene where Chicken Feathers finds out he is good looking.
The first 30 minutes are exciting, but the rest of the movie I found hard to sit through. I loved the comedy, but there is not enought of it. The movie just moves along too slow and has a hard time deciding whether it wants to be comedic or serious. The boredom is interrupted by the great acting of Francis Ng a few times, but not enough.
2.5/5
The DVD from Sony Entertainment has perfect picture quality and good 5.1 Cantonese audio. It also has an English and French dub in 5.1 which I didn't listen to. And the subtitles are very well written.
How Phoenix Black Becomes the White Dragon and Falls in Love.......2007-03-27
I never expected to discover a martial arts film that was funny. This film is humorous and contains satire along with tremendously effective martial arts scenes. There is a great story line and plot, a romantic love triangle with some tension, beautiful scenery, and great cinematography with long shots of fighting in a bamboo forest, along with very creative photography of fight scenes looking down from the bamboo trees onto the fighters. At times, there is the feeling of a video game in progress because occasionally the acting is somewhat exaggerated to emphasize a specific scene, plus there is the insertion of two crossed swords onto the screen, prior to or during a fight. The music within this film is most enjoyable. Different musical styles accompany various scenes which enhances the feeling and sensitivity of the moment. There is Spanish flamenco music, classical music, some Mediterranean Italian sounding music, and extraordinairy flute playing throughout the film.
The characters are developed with great style and creativity. There is Phoenix Black, a pretty and talented female student who plays two musical instruments, the flute and the lute, and dances very sensitively and provocatively. By chance she encounters the blind assassin in the forest, who hears her flute music and is captivated both by her music as well as her fighting skills. Although the assassin is viewed as a criminal, in reality he is doing a service for the community because he only kills corrupt people ... He also shares whatever bounty he collects with the poor.
Phoenix encounters the assassin again at her school where Auntie, the cleaning lady (who in reality is a great fighter) ends up nearly being defeated by the assassin. This great elderly lady martial artist's name includes the word "Dragon". She suffered near fatal injuries during her fight with the blind assassin, she fears she is dying and quickly downloads her special powers to Phoenix who then becomes "The White Dragon". Phoenix fights the assassin on the school grounds where the assassin is even more impressed by her skills and effective powers/techniques. It turns out, the assassin had a goal: to kill the principle of the school who was discovered to have been fondling the female students. The principle signed a confession to this misdeed before he was killed.
The students are in an uproar after finding out the Principle was killed and the reason why. Two rival cliques of female students huddle together discussing the strange events of the night before. The cook at the school, named Gene, provides some humourous insights into how it is known when the blind assassin strikes. Gene reveals his discovery, there are always chicken feathers left at every crime where the assassin has struck. Gene has studied the matter thoroughly. He even names the types of chickens whose feathers are floating in the air, after the assassin has left.
Phoenix does a solo performance at the school. She plays the lute and does a very beautiful sensual Chinese dance where she captures the attention of the local King's son, Prince Tian Yong. His father rules the territory and they want to bring the assassin to justice. Later she has a date with the Prince where besides playing the lute and flute for him, they play tennis and roller skate. Later unfortunately, Phoenix ends up fighting the blind assassin and during one highly stylized martial arts encounter, she fractures a leg. The assassin takes pity on her and brings her to his home located on a beautiful lake. When she plays her flute, he falls in love with her. The blind assassin makes her food, creates crutches for her and even builds a wheelchair from wood. She acts petulant and spoiled. She tricks him into buying paper, pen, and ink. She writes letters to Prince Tian which are sent by carrier pigeon. She explains her absence with a white lie, telling him she is on tour performing with the school's music and dance troupe. Eventually, her heart is awakened to the plight of the blind assassin and she becomes more open and caring towards him. She asks him to tell his story, of how he became blind. It is a touching and sensitive tale. She develops empathy toward him.
Despite her tender feelings toward the blind assassin, the plot thickens and through a highly crafted story-line and in well developed scenes, Phoenix manages to escape from the blind assassin. The assassin is captured by the army of the local warlord/king. Phoenix is torn between trying to save the life of the blind assassin who had treated her well during captivity or to resume the romance with Prince Tian, who inherited the throne from his father. Prince Tian has become the local ruler - his plans are clear: the blind assassin must be put to death for his crimes. The suspense and drama is immense as Phoenix is forced to choose between the blind assassin and her boyfriend, the new ruler of the realm. Amazingly, chicken feathers provide the the major clue to helping Phoenix resolve her personal conflict and they play a major role in saving the life of the blind assassin. This is a most highly recommended film. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]
NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY........2006-10-04
If you want to see this movie remember to tell your self this "This is not Hero or House of Flying Daggers." this movie is baiscally a light hearted comedy with very little action. This movie also focuses on the romance more than anything else. So if you have high expectation that this movie is going to be epic the you a setting your self up for a huge disapointment. But if you keep in mind to what I wrote here and keep your expectations low then you will most likely enjoy this movie. Rememeber DON"T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.
eh.......2006-09-22
Wasn't impressed by this movie at all. It's half martial arts flick, half comedy but not good at either really.
Who should buy this movie: If you like Cecelia Cheung or movies like the Promise, Legend of Zu (or warriors of zu mountain whichever the new one is called), or Wu Yen then you might like this movie. Otherwise I'd skip it.

But just the same, Amazon's independent sellers have all of them in stock, and you can get them for very low prices now - hell, that may be even cheaper than my previous suggestion of renting them!
this game was off the cheesy charyts.......2004-09-23
i love games that have to do with little people playing with balls espeacially big grapefroot size balls. That is exactly what they do in this game. the balls come alive and eat people then spit out there jucise with there two front teeth
Super Saiyan 4 fusion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-19
Amazingly enough, this was indeed the highlight of the GT series. As Super Saiyna 4 Goku tries to fell Omega Shenron, the ultimate shodow dragon, Goku's efforts were proved to be in vain. Then Vegeta came to the scene when Goku planned to blow himself up like a jackass; then it happened. Vegeta finally reached the level of Super Saiyan 4. Then they decided to do a fusion. With the two of them combined, they have proved to be unstoppable. But the fusion proven to take too much out of both of them and used up most of their power. If they are unable to fuse again, will the two strongest saiyans alive be able to destroy the last of the shadow dragons? Find out in the next DVD "Generations".
The Best of any Dragonball Episodes.......2004-04-16
This Dvd is almost as good as Dragonball can get. Dragonball series are my favorite cartoons of all time. So I would highly recommend this DVD Or Video who loves action packed mayhem. Lets get it on.
The Black Sheep of the Dragonball Family..........2004-04-06
...is without a doubt, the GT series. With vastly different writing, I would almost say it's not that fair to even call GT a Dragonball series. In fact, the GT series reminds me of what happens when "fan-fiction" goes way too far... and never was a fan of "Fanfic" at all to begin with. In this volume, Goku is battling the last shenron dragon who absorbs the dragonballs. Being overmatched by his power, he has help from old nemesis/friend Vegeta, and they perform Fusion for the first time in the Dragonball GT series. However will the fusion last?
Sadly, this really is one of the better of the Dragonball GT releases. Lets face it, all GT does is pull out the most popular themes from Dragonball Z and sort of twist them. For instance, the Fusion here (Gogeta) vs. the **permanent** fusion in Z (Vegitto) seems to me more like a last ditch effort to save this series. Of course you have to overlook one big, giant hole in that... exactly when did Goku and Vegeta practice the whole fusion dance again? Not in the Dragonball GT or Z series, but in the Dragonball Z movie. Also, in Dragonball GT, the authors totally destroy the value of the "Super Saiyan". The best evidence of this is from the Super Android 17 series. C'mon, Gohan beat Cell, who absorbed 2 androids, as a child...
I'll give much thanks to Funimation for bringing the franchise to the US shores. I think they did a great job, and they're the reason I give this three stars - they tried to keep everything, including voiceovers, very consistent. Just... the material wasn't much to work with. However IMO, it would have been better to spend a more time on showing the rest of the Dragonball Z movies... after the Brolly movie, that was all they released. Maybe the Goku/Vegeta fusion would've made more sense to new fans.

Rating the whole Baby saga..........2003-11-24
I have seen a lot of Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and now I have seen everything released (legally) of Dragonball GT. All three series have changed (Dragonball has Roshi being a pervert, Z has more blood, etc. etc.), but GT doesn't really seem to be a big change from the other two. There aren't really many perverted jokes (if any), and the violence isn't worth putting the 13+ sticker on it.
What is this series worth, then? I think the plot as a whole is a little more mature than the other series have been, not just people running around and taking seven episodes to charge a spirit bomb. Baby is a worthy enemy, even though he is defeated the same as all of the other enemies in the past. The moustache episode is great, for those who know what I'm talking about. Basically, when the series is good, it's great; and when it sucks, it sucks.
Back to things I have issues with about the series. The DVDs are overpriced for how many episodes are on a single DVD, and the episode titles and numbers are not listed on the front or back of the DVD cover, so if you didn't know what you were doing, you wouldn't know what you were getting. Perfect example would be myself: I have browsed through stores for the past year or so, and spotted DBGT DVDs, and havn't bought any. Over the past couple of months, I decided to get one to start with. I was in the store and didn't do my online research, so I didn't know exactly what I was getting (episode wise). I made a prayer and bought the DVD (Annihalation), and came home to realize it had episodes 20-22. Attempting to jump into the episodes didn't work, so I decided that in order to understand, a couple other DVDs would be needed. Personally, I didn't feel the Affliction DVD was necessary and did a poor compilation of episodes 1-16 (Japanese) into episode 1 (English). It was almost a waste of time to see Goku battle Rilldo. Once Baby is brought into the series is when it is worth buying (Baby comes into play in episode 7). Rilldo and Dr. Myuu should have all been crammed onto one DVD, so fans wouldn't have to suffer through it, or maybe just catch them on tv or rent them. All of this confusion was overwhelming, so I broke down and bought the other 7 DVDs, ranging in price. ($14.97 Salvation and Annihalation at Walmart...thank you Walmart, $19.97 for Ramifications and Preparation at some other department store, and $24.95 for Affliction, Incubation, Creation and Proliferation in the mall because no other store carried them.) As you can see, this was a costy affair, and also throwing a lot of money around. (Hell, I may just sell them to someplace for at least some of the money back.) It could all be put on 3 discs for at most $60 and I would have been much happier.
Also a big factor: Where is the gore??!! Five year old children could watch this and think it as the same stuff they show on Cartoon Network. My first DVD didn't have the 13+ sticker on it, and after one episode, I immediately thought it to be edited. I guess the only parts that would be worht editing would be nudity, but kids think asses are funny! They always show asses in cartoons, so why would it be edit-worthy in this series? It's not, to tell you the truth. There is other anime that doesn't even have the sticker that actually should (i.e. Eva...bless you Evangelion). When you go in buying these things, you think you are going to get some great unedited stuff here. That's what I find annoying about the whole affair.
So, after all my rambling, to sum up...
Baby, in itself, is a great saga. Gen. Rilldo and Dr. Myuu, however, were a waste of time and money. (Rilldo was uncannily similar to Cell.) The DVDs don't show the episodes on it, and they are severely overpriced. Dragonball GT also follows the fighing "formula" as its predecessors:
Goku meets enemy + Goku punches enemy rashly and enemy lets it go by + enemy takes on a new form and beats the crap out of Goku + Kais and others watch and go "OH MY GOD, WILL GOKU LIVE?" + Goku goes to another Super Saiyan form + Enemy is surprised + the enemy and Goku are evenly matched and fight for a while = eventually Goku wins and there is a pointless episode or two following the defeat of the enemy.
That's the formula. Repetitive, yet addicting.
Suggestion: Watch them on tv, rent them, or borrow them and watch the series. See which episodes you like, do your research, and buy the DVDs with the episodes you liked most on them (from a Used place hopefully). You will find more money in your pocket, and a bigger smile on your face knowing you saved a lot of money. OR, get hooked on another anime series...try Tenchi Universe, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Trigun or Hellsing.

a long long long time fan.......2005-01-11
watched/read dragonball starting way back in 1992 or so...it is the best manga/anime ever...and i do not think GT shames that name...it is only until the black star dragon saga that it gets a little boring cuz they misuse the power of SS4...but it gets good again when Goku encounters Nuova Dragon~DB GT is awesome
A grown woman addicted to DB(Z/GT).......2004-03-07
I like to counter a previous review saying that DB(Z/GT)is not for girls. I am a 21 year old woman and I love it. I started reading the manga when I was a girl then watched the anime. At first I ignored the serie thinking it was too 'boyish' but the fanfics about Bulma and Vegeta changed that. I watch DBGT once a week now and cant wait til it gets to the Baby part.
Dragon Ball GT alittle too LATE!!!.......2003-11-11
I was a big fan of the DBZ series i started watching back when cartoon network started putting them on...year after year us true dbz fans waited for new episodes and they didn't come it took then about 6 years after i started watching they finnaly got it together and put out someting that should have been put out many years ago DBGT... but why Funimation is killing the DBZ/GT name i saw the first episode on cartoon network then i saw it at my cousins house....it sucked... about 2 years ago i was still a dbz fan but Funimation took way too long in getting out the Cell saga and Buu saga that most DBZ fan watching from the early days lost intrest we found BETTER animes like AKIRA, Gundam Sagas, and many more.... ALOT DBZ fans will not enjoy this the only DBZ fans that will are the ones that started watching 2 or 3 years ago... i think it sucks and its not worth giving your money to Funimation because they screwed up a good anime name!
DraGONbALLz Sucks Sailor moons alot better.......2003-10-26
I hate drangonballz its to boyish for me. If your a girl then don't get this its way to boyish for me. Sailor moon is the greatest girl anime next to sakura wars.
