Product Description

Navigating life and love in L.A. isn't easy, and no one knows that better than Noah and his friends - Alex, Ricky & Chance. LOGO's ground-breaking, one-of-a-kind series Noah's Arc follows all four as they chart an uncertain course through the City of Angels, where laughter and drama are never in short supply.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I <3 Noah's Arc.......2007-07-04

I've only seen the first 4 episodes, but I love it. It is both a total gay fantasy and a totally real story. I hear the Logo is canceling the show - BOOOOO! Hey Showtime or HBO - if you are reading this get this show and I will subscribe to your channel - PROMISE!

5 out of 5 stars great series.......2007-07-04

This was even better than the first series. I would really like to know if Wade and Noah got back together.

4 out of 5 stars A comedy about drama.......2007-07-02

The second season of Noah's Arc has all the comedy, drama, and excitement of the first with even more hilarious twists and turns. The season begins with Noah and friends seeing Wade at a bar and Noah realizing, much to his chagrin, that Wade has moved on. Even though he's involved in a relationship himself, Noah finds that he's still in love with Wade and has to come to terms with those feelings over the course of this season. Chance and his husband Eddie are working on strengthening their marriage and learning to be better parents, while Ricky finally accepts that he cares for Genito and decides to try and make it work. Finally, Alex lets his jealousy take over again when Trey begins hanging out with his friends too much.

This season tackles all sorts of issues, including trust in a relationship, infidelity, living with a partner who has AIDS, and homophobia. It seems, at times, that the writers tried to squeeze every gay issue they possibly could into this short season and, with only eight episodes, at times it feels a bit rushed. Still, I have to say this is one of my favorite shows from Logo just because of the hilarious dialogue between the characters and their Sex and the City dynamic. Logo marketed this show as Sex and the City meets Soul Food and I'm going to say it also has elements of Queer as Folk and The L Word. I would highly recommend Noah's Arc for a fun weekend in when you're in the mood for some laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Still juicy yet better than season 1 set...........2007-06-24

For those who know of Noah's Arc know that the show is a one of a kind experience because it explores Black gay culture and not the standard norm of perceived gay culture. On the second season box set of Noah's Arc, the entire show has been upgraded with lots of features unlike the season 1 set that wouldn't dare compare to season 2. I must say that I am still looking for the easter egg of Trey's calendar shoot. Patrik-Ian Polk, the show's creator, mentioned it on his My Space blog as well as Amazon has it listed in the features so it's somewhere on one of the three discs. Overall, this set should be bought and watched repeatedy it's that good. However I must tell you that in order to enjoy the enitre show you have to get the season 1 dvd in order to know what exactly is going on in season 2.

4 out of 5 stars Second season was more real........2007-06-19

I was glad to see the characters more fleshed out in the second season. The story line and production was really punched up. The sets, wardobe, music selections and guest stars were refreshing. I only wish the show was an hour long. Too often, I would want more time to watch the show. 30 minutes just wasn't enough!

As with Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio.) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too--Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indie's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Scenes were deleted :(.......2007-07-02

I watched the entire DVD version and unfortunately, the entire movies are not there. A couple scenes were deleted from all 3 movies.

Probably my favorite scene that was deleted was in Temple of Doom, during the dinner scene. The part where the monkey's scalp is pulled off and it shows the monkey's brain, was deleted from the DVD version.

This was an absolute waste of money. I want the ENTIRE movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Deserving of its AFI Top Movie List Ranking.......2007-06-30

I love the Indiana Jones series. They were fantastic when they first came out, when I was a young teen, enjoying the fast paced action and sharp witty comments. They're equally great now that I'm older and can see the much deeper meaning in many of the interactions. The movie series does a fantastic job of both providing light, entertaining for the young ones as well as some quality character interactions for those who seek them.

Harrison Ford shines in a role which, in the hands of another actor, might have turned into a cliche. Well, it IS a cliche in the sense that the adventure guy acts as if he's in a video game - running, jumping and shooting his way out of trouble. But he's so much more. He has his doubts, his weaknesses. He knows what he's doing is very risky, and he judges his chances with an experienced eye before leaping into the fray.

I've seen these movies so many times that I'm very glad they're on DVD, where a tape is not wearing holes in it. There's always something new to spot in a situation. The little details tucked into the corners are just astounding.

Highly, highly recommended. This is a set that every home should own. You can pop it into the player at any time, with pretty much any crowd, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones DVDs.......2007-06-27

This series (the first 3 Indiana Jones movies) is a classic, and a great deal of fun.

5 out of 5 stars The ride of your life.......2007-06-21

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas wanted to make a movie that was like the old action adventure movies and they succeeded. The movies grab you by the throat from the beginning and add suspense, quirky joke lines and fast-paced action.

Settle back with your favourite drink, grab a container of popcorn, dim the lights and get ready for the best entertainment night you have had for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars First class, all the way........2007-06-14

I recently picked up this boxed set, and couldn't be happier. I loved these movies as a kid, and still enjoy them immensely as an adult. The digital remastering is gorgeous -- the colors are vivid and the picture crisp. The 4th disc of bonus material is also well done. I won't even comment on the films themselves -- quality material that stands the test of time. Classic, action-packed Spielberg. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

The connection and interdependence between yoga and belly dance are explored in Tribal Fusion, a reasonably comprehensive and intense program drawing on both disciplines and demonstrated by the remarkable Rachel Brice. Practices of three different lengths (15, 30, and about 40 minutes) are offered; elements in the shorter practices are repeated and expanded on in the longer ones. The yoga portions include some basic sun salutations, lunges, backbends (specifically the locust pose), and such; the more extensive belly dancing exercises and undulations focus on the hips, the chest, and shoulders. Brice's instructions are efficient, if sometimes a bit on the brisk side (it's one thing to exhort students to practice ujjayi pranayama, the deep, audible nostril breathing style used in yoga; it's quite another to do so without even saying what it is, let alone showing how it's done). Whether or not any of the female users for which this DVD is intended will be able to replicate Brice's belly dancing moves is open to question, as her technique and amazingly toned body make things look easy when, in fact, mere mortals may find them baffling, to say the least. Moreover, although Carolena Nericcio, one of Brice's mentors and the "hostess" of this program, stresses that "the main attraction (of belly dancing) is delight," Brice doesn't seem to be having much fun, never so much as cracking a smile. Little matter. When you're this good, there's no need to kid around. --Sam Graham

Bellydance Superstar Rachel Brice teaches basic tools that can be incorporated into daily practice that will bring flexibility, strength and, if practiced regularly, effortlessness into whatever Belly Dance style you choose. Instruction includes a short Yoga practice to warm up and strengthen the body as well as a final chapter on Yoga for flexibility."

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars yoga or bellydance.......2007-05-28

I bought this dvd for the yoga as well as the drills - i know what drills are and that is what I wanted. The blurb says for any level of dance student. However, I fond the yoga impossible (I could manage corpse position!) It's certainly not for anyone who hasn't done yoga before. The drills are good but you don't get much for your money as each section is the same as before and timings include yoga. Beginners should buy Jenna Bellydance Basics and beyond for drills and instruction. More advance students might want more content.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2007-05-19

I usually only review DVDs I really love, but felt I had to say something about this one, seeing as I bought it after reading the spotlight review "I'd give it more stars if I could!!"

I watched the intro and it looked so promising - Rachel is an amazing dancer and her yoga form is good - and I loved the idea of having 15, 30 and 45 minute workouts. Alas, there was little substance to the actual workouts. Even the 45 minute practice was dreary and disjointed - a couple of yoga poses (sun salutations with lunge - very hard the way Rachel does them, then straight into locust pose), a few bellydance drills and then a couple of yoga stretches at the end. In the intro, Rachel is shown doing pigeon pose, bow pose and another backbend. Where were these in the workouts? I can only assume she had little editorial control over this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Rachel's Yoga Isolations & Drills for Bellydance.......2007-05-03

This DVD is exactly what it claims to be: yoga moves, mostly "down-dogs," with a few progressively more difficult asanas added for more advanced students, and repetitive isolations. Not very creative, but very useful when you just need a certain kind of workout.

2 out of 5 stars Not very inspiring!.......2007-04-03

Well... it's a pretty, if occasionally weirdly shot, video. Like many other reviewers, I agree that this one is a nice little extra thing to do outside of class or in tandem with other workouts. Rachel is an amazing dancer & I am a fangirl, but sometimes the best need to coordinate their creative teaching energies with a writer/director who knows how to communicate physical techniques to the masses (specialized though we may be) and can more appropriately guide the gaze of the videographer.

1 out of 5 stars very weird???.......2007-04-03

Did not like this one at all. very bizzarr.not at all like I thought it was going to be.

Product Description

Chris Cole (MARK WAHLBERG) was born to rock. His longtime girlfriend Emily (JENNIFER ANISTON) believes Chris's talent could take him all the way - but instead of writing his own music, Chris worships at the altar of Bobby Beers, the fiery frontman for Steel Dragon, the heavy metal rock legends that both inspire and consume his life. By day, Chris still lives at home with his parents and spends his days repairing copy machines, push-starting his sputtering Dodge Dart and fighting with his brother. But when Chris takes the stage, all of that disappears. When he's fronting Blood Pollution, Pennsylvania's premiere Steel Dragon tribute band, Chris Cole is Bobby Beers - mesmerizing audiences with his perfect imitation of Beers' electrifying vocals and sexy snarl. Blood Pollution's low-rent recreation of the Dragon's elaborate arena shows drive the locals (including Chris's loving parents and amused choir director) into a head-banging, hair-whipping frenzy. The night his bandmates boot him out of the group he founded, Chris is devastated - until an unexpected phone call changes his life forever: he, Chris Cole, has been tapped to replace Bobby Beers as the lead singer of Steel Dragon. In an instant, Chris rockets to the dizzying heights of sudden stardom, rising from devotee to icon, from the ultimate rock fan to the ultimate rock god - the wanna-be who got to be. So what happens when an average guy gets everything he wants... and discovers it's not enough?
Running Time: 106 min.

If you've ever indulged a rock & roll fantasy, Rock Star will give you the vicarious thrill of seeing that fantasy come to life. That's what happens when talented tribute-band singer Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is tapped to replace his idol as frontman for 1980s metal gods Steel Dragon. Chris becomes the groupie-laden "Izzy," his manager girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) grows weary of sex 'n' drugs on tour, and Rock Star plays out its utterly conventional plot line. Despite the casting of real rockers to support Wahlberg's underrated performance (nicely matched by Aniston and Timothy Spall as Steel Dragon's road manager), his character is too rigidly written to follow an obligatory rise and fall, and even its basis in fact (inspired by Tim "Ripper" Owens's recruitment into Judas Priest) can't conceal the movie's predictable formula. As a cautionary tale it's routine, but as a leather-pants love story, Rock Star's got enough good karma to keep its dream alive. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Rock on! .......2007-05-09

I had a good time watching this movie. It's entertaining and one that you can watch more than once and still enjoy. Rock Star also had a great cast to help keep both the action and the melodrama on an even keel.

5 out of 5 stars love the rock and roll music.......2007-03-18

the movie proves that everyone has a dream, and some day it will bw achieved thru hard work.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Rock Movie for the Hair Era.......2007-02-16

This at least glosses over many elements of rock stardom and in some instances, the acting and situations are pulled off very well. The hero worship, incredible fan dedication, sex, drugs, sex, alcohol, sex, heartbreak, band breakups, life on the road, sex, drugs, hair, leather, backstage passes (which lead to more sex and drugs) are covered pretty well. Fun flick!

3 out of 5 stars AWESOME 80'S MOVIE TRIBUTE!! but kind of touching!!!!.......2006-11-30

I though that this movie would be cool as Detroit Rock City or Dazed and Confused but is not! Rock Star is not exacly a "rock movie tribute for the past deacades" like Detroit Rock City, this is more like a dramatic story of a rocker fan in the 80's.

But DON'T GET ME WRONG! this movie is COOL!! The main character in the story hang out with the band, gettin wasted, going with groupies, lisening to rock, flashing devil horn signs and teaching his little bother how to be a HEAVY METAL FAN!

The Cons are: Most of the soundtracks were not taken from true 80's rock bands, they were made by this fictional band with fictional songs called Dragon Steel. The movie have some touching moments that spoil the fun, there were no comments about 80's rock bands, the movie wasn't that funny and the ending was kind of predictable.

P.S: Is worth buying it, but if you are looking for cool funny rocking movies of past decades then this is not for you.

ADIOS.

4 out of 5 stars "Gimme blood Pollutions"...this movie will make metal heads "Stand up and Shout".......2006-10-28

This movie was a suprise when it came out, not highly publisized, but a good cast in Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg. This takes place in the mid/late 1980's where Wahlberg plays a early 20's frontman to a tribute band to "steel dragons", a 70's super-metal group with erie similarities to Judas Priest, although the creators deny any tie ins. He lives at home with his parents still and is trying to "make it big" on someone elses music, and they do a good job. Low and behold he is handed the dream of a lifetime when Steel Dragon decides to get rid of their legendary frontman and starts a search for his replacement...which ends at Wahlbergs door. From here we follow his character, now known as "Izzy" to his public through through his Dream. No real suprises in this movie as far a story line (especially if you know the Judas priest story), and no acadamy awards for acting, but some good humor and Entertaining, with a Killer soundtrack. Steel Dragons is made up of, and played in the movie by, real life rock stars Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne,Black Label society), Jason Bohnam (son of Jon Bohnam of Zepplin, and Bohnam), Jeff Pilson (Dokken), Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmstein group), Nick Catonese (Black label society), Mike Matijevic (steelheart). Just an overall good movie, great music, and entertaining, especially if you are in to metal. Check it out.

Russian master Alexander Sokurov has tapped into the very flow of history itself for this flabbergasting film. Thanks to the miracles of digital video, Sokurov (and cinematographer Tilman Buttner) uses a single, unbroken, 90-minute shot to wind his way through the Hermitage in St. Petersburg--the repository of Russian art and the former home to royalty. Gliding through time, we glimpse Catherine II, modern-day museumgoers, and the doomed family of Nicholas II. History collapses on itself, as the opulence of the past and the horrors of the 20th century collide, and each door that opens onto yet another breathtaking gallery is another century to be heard from. The movie climaxes with a grand ball and thousands of extras, prompting thoughts of just how crazy Sokurov had to be to try a technical challenge like this--and how far a distance we've traveled, both physically and spiritually, since the movie began. --Robert Horton

Description

A modern filmmaker magically finds himself transported to the 18th century, where he embarks on a time-traveling journey through 300 years of Russian history in Alexander Sokurov's masterpiece. Filmed in HD with directors commentary

5 out of 5 stars Eye pleasing.......2007-06-13

a masterpiece and a great cinematic achivement (one continuous shot!)

5 out of 5 stars Spek-tacular!.......2007-06-01

The movie is a metaphor for the pre-revolution Russia told through the treasures and beauty of Hermitage. Spectacularly shot in one single take, this is a poem, not a movie. Only a person with good understanding of Russian and European history will fully appreciate what this film has to tell. It all sadly ended once the red criminals took over in 1917. The Russia and the Europe will never be the same. Parts of our souls had been taken away for ever.

No wonder some viewers in US discarded the movie as a pretentious art experiment. An illiterate person can stare at thousands of books and never grasp a single word from those pages. This is a movie for conoseurs of art, history and good cinema. If you are expecting pure, superficial entertainment, stay away. There's plenty of junk out there for that.

4 out of 5 stars A moving meditation that's accessible AND challenging.......2007-05-22

I find the negative reviews of this film quite puzzling.Having been dragged to some incredibly long, slow-moving 'art films' by well-meaning cinephile friends,(you know who you are!),windy pieces of ponderous,mind-numbing cinema verite snore-fests that crawled their way to their bleak,Nihilistic conclusions after 3 bladder-challenging hours,I find this gentle, genial film, at 90 minutes, a positive romp in comparison.Surely an hour and a half is not a huge ask of an audience by the director to let him slow things down a bit?A beautiful toe-dip into the twin waters of art & time.Imagine if you walked through a gallery the walls came alive. That is more or less the essence of this film. It's a simple premise and works all the more beautifully because of it.Just slow down, and go with the ride. You won't regret it.For those who love the very nature of film composition, the success of using the uninterrupted shot to convey the grand sweep of History will be a bonus. This is a challenging film but with a light emotional touch that makes it still very accessible.Think of it as a walking meditation on the roles museums play in storing the ephemera of a nation's soul for it's future generations.A beautiful & charming film.

3 out of 5 stars The DVD cannot bring the effect that this film had when seen in HD in the theatre........2007-04-23

Years back, I saw the film NIAGARA FALLS at the IMAX Theatre in Canada.I was enthralled and moved beyond words! The film took me over the Falls.I heard and felt the mighty waters!.... I purchased the film at the visitor's center and went home eagerly to watch it.Well...after one watching,it sat never to be viewed again. Why? Because the filming process couldnot convey to the small screen! Hence RUSSIAN ARK,lavishly filmed with High definition cameras in one four hour take that sweeps (at times quite confusingly if you are not somewhat acquainted with at least the major highpoints of Russian History!!!!) through The Hermitage where all of Russia's past treasures and glory is contained (like the Ark of God from the Old Testament). This Alexsandr Sokurov "life dream" is HIS dream, and it is either going to impress you or bore you to tears. For the director to be commended is simply inadequate words,BUT what you see and feel when viewing RUSSIAN ARK in a theatre on a large screen equipped to convey the HD experience (similar to my IMAX debacle)what the director intended, and what you ACTUALLY get watching this film on either enhanced vhs or dvd at your home is simply NOT the same.As it is my intention to review the product RUSSIAN ARK:THE MASTERWORKS EDITION ,I must say "Sorry "for those who have had nearly orgasmic experiences concerning this 96 minute tour on Russian history.(Trust me,I repeat, that if you know nothing of Russian History you will find yourselves wishing you were at The National Gallery in D.C. looking at Picasso!)To have someone NOT spend good money on a product that is not what the director intended is worth my "sour grapes" .Unless this film is shown near you, perhaps at a University (where I recently saw it) or an Art Gallery or in a revival at a Movie House,I cannot recommend anyone buying this film and watching the aspect ratios changed, the colours dulled and the sweeping magnitude of the director's intention pushed onto a small screen.(The dvd extras are informative, but again, who cares when you cannot view the film as intended!!!YOU WILL NOT GET THIS FILM AS IT WAS MEANT TO BE EXPERIENCED!)When viewed outside it's original venue,RUSSIAN ARK,which apart from the technological aspects, really is a rather dull and lifeless narrative and the continued ongoing room-to-room tour will have you wanting to exit way before the Museum doors close at 4:45.If viewed on a large HD-capable screen, the narrative is STILL dull and lifeless, but the senses will at least be satiated to linger a bit longer (though not much!).

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2007-04-04

I thought this was an complete and utter prententious waste of time. I watch hundreds of videos a year & this is the only one I've had to fast forward through most of just to keep a glimmer of interest. It's not really about the history of Russia at all. In fact, it's not about much of anything. It's more of an exercise in cinema, a bad idea that should have been tossed aside. The cinematography & art direction was nice but other than that it was cinematic doodling.

These types of shows were wonderful then and they are good to see again after all these years. The shows back then taught children things.

5 out of 5 stars Ark 2.......2007-05-09

Ark II was a live-action science fiction series aimed at children that aired on CBS beginning in 1976 as part of its Saturday morning line-up.
The show starred Terry Lester as Ark II's commander Jonah, Jean Marie Hon as Ruth, José Flores as Samuel, and a chimpanzee playing Adam. The cast is notable for its racial mix and the Biblical inspirations for the character names. The show's setting was in the post-apocalyptic 25th century (specifically, 2476), after Earth's civilizations were decimated by the effects of waste and pollution, falling back to a level comparable to the Dark Ages. Surviving scientists pooled their knowledge and resources, training three young people (and the chimp, who was capable of speech) to search for remnants of humanity, reintroducing lost ideas as they traveled the barren landscape in the high-tech Ark II.
The series is best-remembered for its titular vehicle: a futuristic six-wheeled combination RV and mobile laboratory. The vehicle was built from a fiberglass body on a garbage/dump truck chassis by the Brukaber Group. It is sometimes incorrectly reported that the Ark II was built by Dean Jeffries, who constructed various fantastic vehicles for science-fiction films and television. These include the Landmaster for the film Damnation Alley, with which the Ark II is sometimes confused. The front end of the Ark II prop was later re-used as the nose portion of the Seeker spacecraft in the Filmation series Space Academy.
In addition, the series also featured futuristic inventions such as a jetpack called the Jet Jumper, and the Ark Roamer, a smaller, 4-wheeled all-terrain vehicle built by Brubaker from a modified Brubaker Box (a kit car using a Volkswagen Beetle chassis).
The series featured memorable guest stars, including Jonathan Harris and, notably, Robby the Robot (as the title character built by Samuel in the episode "The Robot").
Only 15 half-hour episodes of the series were produced; however, these episodes were re-run by CBS for several years.
The opening credits for each episode summarized the show's backstory:
"For millions of years, Earth was fertile and rich. Then pollution and waste began to take their toll. Civilization fell into ruin. This is the world of the 25th century. Only a handful of scientists remain. Men who have vowed to rebuild what has been destroyed... This is their achievement... Ark II, a mobile storehouse of scientific knowledge, manned by a highly trained crew of young people. Their mission: to bring the hope of a new future to mankind."
"Ark II log, entry #1: I, Jonah, Ruth, Samuel and Adam are fully aware of the dangers we face as we venture into unknown, maybe even hostile, areas. But we're determined to bring the promise of a new civilization to our people and our planet."
In "The Launch of Ark II", the documentary filmed for the release of the DVD set, Lou Scheimer and others mention that the program was filmed during the summer of 1976 predominantly on location at what is now Malibu Creek State Park.

My young boys love watching it with me and that makes this old favorite one for the family. KEEP THEM COMING BCI!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully put together Performances.......2007-06-12

This dvd, in my opinion, has some of the best, belly dance performances, performed by the top belly dancer stars. The performances were captured exceptionally on camera. Great production, very well presented. The choreography from one number to the next has a good bit of variety: lot's of tribal, Ansuya on zills, drum solos, solo and group, island interlude, wings of Isis, awesome double veil. The costumes are gorgeous! It was a fantastic production from the entrance of the stars to the end, return of the stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful grace and show-man-ship of belly-dance! .......2007-05-21

This is what Belly dance was meant to be--Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I've been dancing for ten years and I've looked up to each of these dancers. Each one has a grace a beauty that gives this ancient dance a good name. I wish each of the BDSS the best and I look forward to the next DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Excellence in motion.......2007-03-20

I guess I would consider myself a Bellydance Superstars fan, since I have seen every show that's come to San Francisco/Marin since Rachel Brice joined a few years ago. I was studying privately with her at the time, and was crushed to lose a most excellent teacher. I have been bellydancing for nearly 30 years and know many of the other dancers in the group, and I must say that Miles Copeland has pulled a great group to represent those of us who can't tour.

One of the things that really impresses me about Bellydance Superstars is the fact that what they do is very, very high quality. Production is top-notch, lighting is great, and they don't overdo effects so you can really just enjoy the show. Both live and in the videos, this has been the case.

The Folies Bergere video is fun, engaging, ever-changing and very diverse. As a dancer, I've watched it over and over, but I would think even a non-dancer would enjoy it. It makes me feel proud to be a dancer, and even though I hate the "Bellydance Superstars" name, I think as a whole, the project has been a good thing for the entire dance community, bringing an expectation of excellence into the dance that those of us who have worked in it for decades are always fighting to integrate into our industry.

The only thing I would like to see more of is Rachel Brice doing drum solo. For some reason, she's now confined to the very slow performance venues, all taxim instead of a variety, and she is amazing with a live drummer.

I would highly recommend this video to any dancer, especially those who intend to perform or are doing so now. I honestly believe that if bellydancing is to stay popular in the US, we need to achieve and maintain this level of quality.

I thought this was well done, well recorded, and best of all I could really see the Tribal gals up close, which to me was a necessity as their movements are too subtle to be placed back in the 28th row ;)
Nice work overall!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring! Excellent value........2007-01-07

I feel honored to have had a chance to see the wonderful performances on this video. Before this video, I had no idea there were so many different styles of this art form! Amazing performances and I appreciated the DVD menu so I could view my favorites over and over. I am now a HUGE fan of all of the performers, but especially of Rachel Brice and Ansuya. There is true variety that includes tribal, classic, acrobatic, humorous, Bollywood styles with music, sets and costumes that complement. I am going to play this DVD at my next party to educate friends on the variety in bellydance.

Tom Baker's second outing as the renegade Time Lord is a solid entry in the venerable British science fiction series' history, and its overall quality is well-matched by the wealth of supplemental material on the DVD. Fan favorite Robert Holmes penned "The Ark in Space," which places the Doctor and his companions Sarah (Elisabeth Sladen) and Harry (Ian Marter) on a seemingly deserted space station many years in the future. Station Nerva is not as empty as it appears, though; onboard are the cryogenically preserved survivors of Earth's destruction, as well as an insectlike alien race, the Wirrin, which are determined to use the humans--and the Doctor--as hosts to grow their monstrous larvae. Holmes's well-paced script (which, like Alien, bears a resemblance to the A.E. van Vogt story "Black Destroyer") allows Baker to flesh out his well-loved take on the Doctor, as well as considerable suspense. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars "It may be irrational of me, but humans are quite my favourite species.".......2007-03-16

Well, it may be pretty irrational on my part to rate "The Ark in Space" five whole stars when there are noticeable imperfections in this storyline. For instance, the conclusion in episode four is a bit hard to follow as well as bordering on implausible (once you realize what's supposed to be happening), and some rather dodgy moments here and there in the dialogue don't help things. But the strengths tend to outweigh the weaknesses in the final analysis, and getting to see Tom Baker as the Doctor again after all these years trumps the matter as far as I'm concerned. Not that he's got the role down completely yet, this being only his second go at it after "Robot" beforehand, but all the basic elements of his almost archetypal eccentricity are here in the making. Simply fabulous.

The story as a whole is very inventive and imaginative, too, with a healthy dash of suspense and mystery that gradually develops into horror. The idea of the Doctor and his two companions stumbling onto an ancient space station in Earth's far future, triggering its various defense mechanisms and whatnot until finally discovering the crew in cryogenic stasis (so as to outlast a global catastrophe and then repopulate the earth) sets the stage nicely, and then it becomes a matter of finding out what has gone wrong, i.e. why the station malfunctioned and didn't awaken them at the appointed time, why certain crew members are missing altogether, and what has been leaving some rather gross organic residue around and about. Sure enough it's bug-eyed monsters (the Wirrn), who bear humankind some enmity and in any case find comatose humans a convenient source of nourishment.

Yep, that's where things get pretty horrific, but that and the station leader's torturous transmogrification into one of the insectoids is by way of harsh contrast part and parcel of the story's overarching theme, the worth and dignity of individual humanity. Pretty much everything comes together and points to this in fact, obvious things of course like the Doctor's multiple paeans to his favorite species and the space station itself preserving that species and all of its history, culture, and accomplishments (on microfilm) against adversity. The latter complicates the theme, for most of the humans on the station whom the Doctor and company awaken are rather coldly utilitarian eugenicists, and fighting for survival alongside the main characters gradually (and convincingly) humanizes them--it could plausibly be argued that this in fact is the primary plotline. And to top it off, the two people who really save the day at the end are a misfit cynical engineer and the station leader himself whose awful metamorphosis ironically gets him in touch with the last shred of his humanity.

In short, a fine story and theme well-realized by fine acting and pacing plus one of the earliest examples of Tom Baker's fantastic take on the Doctor all make this a fine "Doctor Who" DVD overall.

3 out of 5 stars Doctor Who - The Ark in Space.......2007-02-04

This is an episode worth getting by anyone that is a Doc. Who fan. This episode occers in a far distant futear on a space station where the reminats of human kind are in supended animation. But the space station has been infested by another race (in this case a race of insecrs). The rest of this episode is about trying to defeate this race.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best episodes ever!.......2007-01-12

If you like Tom Baker as Doctor Who, then this episode is a must have. The disc is loaded with extras including alternative special effect sequences and interviews.

5 out of 5 stars The Ark In Space.......2006-01-30

The Ark in Space is one of the finest episodes of Doctor Who and Tom Baker was the BEST Doctor Who.

5 out of 5 stars A forerunner to Alien.......2005-09-21

The Ark in Space begins with the TARDIS materializing aboard Nerva, a space station built during the 30th century. The Doctor (Tom Baker), along with his companions Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter) find the last survivors of the human race resting in suspended animation. The earth has been devastated by solar flares, and the surviving humans have gone into stasis until the planet is safe and habitable once again. The story becomes a predecessor to Alien, as the Wirrn emerge. The Wirrn are an insect-like collective, threatening to devour and destroy the human survivors. The Ark in Space is classic Doctor Who, and very good science fiction to boot, written by the late Robert Holmes who was the most prolific and, perhaps, the greatest writer in DW history. This DVD has some great bonus features, including an interesting commentary track with Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen and Philip Hinchcliffe, who was the show's producer during Baker's first three seasons as the Doctor. Another great feature allows the viewer to watch the program with the original effects with models dangling on strings against a space backdrop, or with new CGI effects. The Ark in Space is one of my favorite stories from my favorite era of the Doctor Who classic series.

5 out of 5 stars A great action film........2007-03-31

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a great, fun action film. It is a great superhero-like film, like the 1988 film, Batman. The action is non-stop and always makes you wonder: How will Indiana Jones get out of this trap?
This film is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Harrison Ford makes history come to life.......2006-05-06

This is the first in a series of fun to watch action packed movies based on what an archeologist should be. Being a first you will not notice the pattern of the film unless you are used to Saturday matinees.

We hit the deck running on this one as we see Indiana Jones making a John Wayne type of entrance. So much that you do not notice the dubious looking character next to him Statipo (Alfred Molina). Until he says "Give me the Idle and I will give you the whip."

Now settled down, after his near miss with the natives, Harrison Ford is a professor (Indiana Jones) teaching the fact that archeology is a search for facts not some thrill ride.

That very afternoon he is confronted by some government agents. It seems that his old professor Abner Ravenwood has disappeared. They picked up some radio transmissions that contained the name of Abner and a city Tannis. Immediately Indiana Jones knows that the Nazis (natural bad buys) are looking for the Ark of the Covenant (which can be used as a weapon of unspeakable power) and somehow he must bet them to it for the sake of the world.

He is helped by an old love interest Marion (Karen Allen) and rivaled by an old nemesis Dr. Rene Belloq (Paul Freeman).

Does it really exist?
How can he beat them to it?
Why is he on the outs with Abner?

Hold on for a thrill a minute and don't eat any bad dates.

Millionaire Jason Crockett (Ray Milland. No, really. Ray Milland) hates frogs. Naturally, he lives on an island estate in the middle of a big Southern swamp. His family also hates frogs, so much so that they clap their hands over their ears and scream about the horrible, horrible noise. Everybody joins in spraying toxic chemicals around, little realizing that these frogs are not just moist, they're mad. Hopping mad. The family gathers for Grandpa's annual birthday celebration, unaware that doom is hopping toward them on wet, flapping feet. The point is driven home with shot after shot of the frogs hopping... hopping... hopping... and occasionally being tossed by a helpful stagehand. Actually, the whole swamp is mad--snakes, snapping turtles, and even crocodiles- -which is really for the best because the only thing the frogs seem to have in the way of menace is that hopping thing. One by one, family members go flailing into the swamp, never to return, while those still in the house watch death hop closer. Frogs is almost as remarkable for the sartorial issues it brings up as the environmental ones. Why is everyone wearing sweaters with blazers in Florida in July? How did Joan Van Ark manage to find an outfit that combines the practicality of hot pants with the beauty of a terrycloth jumper? Will Ray Milland ever be able to get the slime off that bright white suit? And still, the frogs hop closer... --Ali Davis

4 out of 5 stars Good, campy, corney fun...........2007-06-20

"Frogs" is a fun movie. Of course it is corney! It's campy! It's cheesy! But it's a psychotronic flick, never taking itself too seriously and it's loaded with ridiculous stuff to make fun of!
We have Ray Milland playing the usual crotchety old crab-apple that he usually plays. He's the owner of this plantation and bayou in the Florida Everglades. Lately Milland has been fed-up with all the frogs there so he starts hiring a guy to spray pesticides and other things to kill off the frog population. Somehow, despite the fact this goes against the laws of science and nature itself, the frogs actually increase in population and somehow get the other reptiles, amphibians, and even plant like to join in a rebellion against Milland and all his cohorts....what ensues isn't pretty, folks! Death by crocodile, death by acid falling inside a greenhouse from some devious lizards, death by spider webs and vines, death by snake, etc. We have a strange main character in Sam Elliot, Joan Van Ark is a corney bimbo, Adam Rourke overacts, and there's this lady model who dresses up like Aunt Jimima! What a hoot!
Get out the popcorn, kick back, and enjoy "Frogs," a true journey into terror! Ok, not terror, titilation. No, that's too strong, too. Just kick back and have a belly laugh at some really implausable homocides in the bayou!

4 out of 5 stars Daddy Sam.......2007-06-09

Buy this movie for Sam Elliott if for no other reason. What a beautiful specimen of manhood. He fills out his jeans sooooo well and takes off his shirt to show that awesome hairy chest. Oh yes...there are frogs in the movie too!

5 out of 5 stars An Intellectual Essay More Than A Horror Movie.......2007-05-31

If you are looking for a traditional horror movie or a campy spoof, you will be sadly disappointed. Frogs is almost a straight forward sermon. The heart of the lesson is that you will reap what you sow.

Ray Milland plays a bad guy who it the epitome of all bad guys. Humans and animals and nature are all there purely for his own personal convenience and pleasure. He is a sadistic, selfish, tyrant of a man, but rules the family and the world of his private little island with an iron will and the overwhelming force of money and power. He expects all the puppets to move when he pulls the strings. The first part of the movie establishes his personality and reveals his manipulations, then slowly things began to move against him as his day of judgement draws nigh. The other characters are no saints either, ranging from self-centered, to slutty, to gluttenous, to greedy. Yet, even so, they are ordinary people beside the looming evil of the family patriarch.

As he uses their faults and flaws to gratify his own perversities, nature itself begins to mass an attack. Frogs, snakes, spiders, insects, birds, all the animals on the island seem to be stirred by some force, perhaps God, perhaps some force for balance, perhaps just the hand of fate. The plants of the forest even take on an ominous look, dark, forboding, whispering furtively. One by one, the family and guests pay with their lives for their sins while he watches in fury. Fury caused, not out of love for the others, but because he cannot bear to lose control, cannot concieve of giving up or giving in, would stand and die before yielding in mind or body to anyone or anything.

This movie assumes the viewer is intelligent enough to draw conclusions without spelling out any how or why. It also assumes the viewer is sympathetic to nature and believes in "an eye for an eye."

I think some of the reviewers have gotten the wrong idea. You are not supposed to like the characters, you are supposed to hate them. It is okay to wait with gritted teeth for each of them to finally get what they deserve.

The frogs are not the monsters, the humans are.

1 out of 5 stars Save Yourself!! Don't watch this film!!!!.......2007-04-09

I rented this with my friend, who in fact has given his own review quite some time ago, and was expecting something amusingly terrible. Though it was definitely terrible it is far more tedious than it is comical. Hoping for Ray Milland (the same actor who once acted in the great film "The Lost Weekend") to save the film I was extremely disappointed. Never since being made to read "The Joy Luck Club" when all I wanted to do was read "Notes from the Underground" have I so seriously considered escape through suicide. This film is simply awful.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for best of the B-movie Genre.......2007-03-02

Academy Award winner Ray Milland, is the actor who's out of work in his golden years, and forced into the B-movie genre, like Joan Crawford in "Trog (1970)", or Janet Leigh in "Night of the Lepus (1972)". However, at least Ray gave an Oscar performance as the wheel bound Scrooge-like character, bent of celebrating his birthday party while guests, relatives, and employees disappear into the swamps, while others are driven to their doom by the frogs stare...in yet another re-write of "The Birds (1963)".

Sam Elliott who played `the stranger' in "The Big Lebowski (1998)", stars in this killer frog movie as a freelance photographer who hates pollution, and somehow always had the feeling that the frogs who be driven to war, in an almost "I-told-you-the-frogs-would-go-bad" way.

I bought this movie to see these two actors, nothing more. I knew it would be bad, the acting of a B-movie level, the script laughable, the effects hilarious, thousands of frogys hoping close to the camera lens, and thrown at actors. If you aren't expecting anything like that form a 1970's movie called "Frogs", you're going to be in for a surprise.
