Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Some Like it Hot.......2007-06-26
Long before "Tootsie" and "Mrs. Doubtfire", Wilder gave us this comic, gender-bending masterpiece, which came at the very end of the conservative `50s, providing a preview of the more liberated decade to come. Here the director is in pure comedy mode, and pulls off a tricky premise brilliantly. Lemmon and Curtis make an ideal comic duo, Monroe sparkles as the object of their sisterly affections, and Joe E. Brown nearly steals the picture as a dotty millionaire besotted with Lemmon's Daphne. A howl, truly.
Hilarious Classic!.......2007-05-09
Of of the funniest movies of all times. Billy Wilder is a genius, and even though this was made in the 50's, it is not outdated at all and truly a fun film!
Quintessential fun.......2007-04-23
Boy! With present Hollywood standards in comedy going down and down, Billy Wilder black and white movie mixing gangsters, crossdressing, gender clichés, music and intelligence... giving us a melting pot that comes out as a real gem.
Marilyn Monroe has never been one of my favorites, but the dance scene and final dialogue between Jack Lemmon and Joe E.Brown worth the price of a lifetime in movie theaters.
A must!
We Wouldn't be Caught DEAD in Chicago!.......2007-04-23
"Suppose the stock market crashes. Suppose Mary Pickford divorces Douglas Fairbanks. Suppose the Dodgers leave Brooklyn!"
Suppose another improbable premise: Two down on their luck musicians inadvertently witness Chicagoland's infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre and to get outa town they don wigs, flapper dresses and cloche hats and join an all-girl band, bound for Florida on the Sunshine Limited. What a hoot!
Even if you don't know all of the historical references, this is a film that works flawlessly from start to finish with gags that are fresh and fun no matter how familiar they become. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon are unconvincingly improbable dolled up as dames, but they manage to hoodwink bandleader Sweet Sue (Joan Shawlee), songbird Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) and the rest of the cast, to the point that Jack snags a "rich millionaire" (Joe E. Brown who hams it uproariously as "Osgood Fielding III") with enough moxie to tango till dawn! What fun!
Billy Wilder must have loved the `twenties, the songs and the clothes, and who doesn't love the Del Coronado Hotel even when it doubles for the Seminole Ritz? "Spats Colombo" (George Raft) has a wonderful insider Hollywood gag bit harking back to his own smaller "Guino Rinaldo" supporting role in "Scarface"--could it be the very same quarter being flipped? ("Where did you pick up that cheap trick?").
The songs are fabulous, especially when Marilyn is "Runnin' Wild", does her o so scantily clad version of Boop-a-Doop gal Helen Kane and warms up Tony to "I'll Build a Stairway to the Stars". And "Underneath the Sheltering Palms" is the perfect resort-arrival song--Disney should try it at their pseudo-Del AKA Grand Floridian.
Remember: "It's not how long it takes, it's who's taking you." And the film's perfect ending line is surely one of the five greatest in all Hollywood history. (The others? "Casablanca", "The Wizard of Oz", "Sunset Boulevard" and "Now, Voyager"). Maybe nobody's perfect, but this comedy sure is!
Hot Collection........2007-03-27

Yet another bad movie in a lengthy string of losers for all three of the principals involved here: director John Landis and stars Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase. Chase and Aykroyd play a pair of bumbling would-be CIA agents who are spotted cheating on the entrance exam. So the CIA decides to use them as bait in a mission to flummox the Russians. Lots of pointless slapstick and mugging, but Landis hasn't made a genuinely funny film since Trading Places. Aykroyd and Chase seem smug and self-satisfied (don't they always?), as though they can rest forever on laurels earned during the 1975 season of Saturday Night Live. Look for a gaggle of film directors (Terry Gilliam, Joel Coen, Costa-Gavras) in cameo roles: that's the closest this film comes to cleverness. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
"We mock what we don't understand".......2007-05-25
How unique to see a movie in which Dan Aykroyd looks short!
There's nothing terribly wrong with "Spies Like Us". The plot is perfectly sound as the basis for a comedy, and Chase and Aykroyd do their best with the material. The problem is that it's just not that funny. There are only a handful of the laugh-out-loud moments that should serve as justification for the whole enterprise.
Another problem is that Chase's character is so hopelessly incompetent that he makes no contribution to the characters' mission whatsoever. Aykroyd's character could have done the whole thing by himself. This characteristic is not shared by "Ghostbusters" or even "The Blues Brothers", in which all the leading characters have particular technical and/or social skills that are essential to the success of the team. As an Aykroyd fan I'm always happy to see him playing courageous and competent characters, but Austin Millbarge is arguably **too** perfect; he doesn't have any of the kind of peculiarities that Aykroyd can get his teeth into as an actor, like Ray Stantz's childlike nature in "Ghostbusters" or Mother's outrageous conspiracy theories in "Sneakers".
5 star comment.......2007-03-09
The priduct arrived ahed of time, no problems, no dispute
and your reply made me feel very plesed to contact you again.
Lame.......2006-07-18
When John Belushi died in 1982, he left Dan Aykroyd with several scripts and the sad end to what could have been a great comedy team like Laurel & Hardy or Abbott & Costello.
Aykroyd filled John's spot in GHOSTBUSTERS with Bill Murray and hit comedy gold.
He filled SPIES LIKE US with Chevy Chase and came up snake eyes.
View at your own risk. At least it's not as bad as NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, easily one of the worst comedies ever made.
Spies like Us.......2006-07-03
I love this movie with a Paul McCartney song. I received it fast and at a great price.
quite weak.......2006-06-14
The story is about special agents saving the world from some bad guys in the US government. The idea is similar to the 007 movies, but it is really not comparable. The movie is quite primitive, the story is predictable, the jokes are about old Cold War era stereotypes. The acting would be ok for some late night show episodes but not a full length movie.

Hot Collection........2007-03-27
One of Marilyn Monroe's best films. A classic duo of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Guarenteed to make you laugh!

funny movie!.......2007-05-13
saw this movie one saturday morning on Comedy Central and it had me cracking up! i HAD to add it to my collection!
Bored Me To Tears.......2006-01-31
I admit, I only watched half this movie. I couldn't take any more. The acting was campy and over-the-top (even for an 80's movie, this beat them all). The plot seemed silly and ridiculous. I didn't even really care that much for the characters in this movie enough to find out how everybody made out in the end, though I'm sure I can figure it out easily enough.
I might be missing something because everybody else on Amazon.com is raving about it. I just don't get it.
One thing I don't agree with was people's review of how this was a family film. I may not know what qualifies as a family film but with all the swearing and innuendo in the movie I wouldn't let my son watch it.
a true family movie.......2005-03-29
This movie is a one-of-a-kind. Never again will you see this kind of inoccent comedy which is very funny. I remember seeing it when younger, and now my daughter has me seeing it 20 times a day. I still watch it each time and laugh. Mandel and lloyd are hilarious in this 80's film. Great for kids.My daughter is 3 and shes hooked on BOBO.....
DON'T CHEAT YOURSELF BUY THIS AWESOME DVD - MOVIE, .......2005-03-24
This is a totally awesome movie not because of awesome special effects, not because it is particularly well written, not because it is at all believable because trust me it's not very realistic at all. The Walk Like A Man works because, it is extremely funny and it has an awesome message. I am very disabled and this movie shows why it is ok to be different. The movie shows how sometimes what people see as different is in many ways better than what most people call "normal". For all Walk Like A Man Lacks in traditional movie POP and FIZZ it makes up for in its message of heart. The movie is more slap stick comedy than serious. If you want a more serious Boy Raised by Wolves Tale I would suggest LUCAN.
This is a movie to watch if you still have the heart of child like innocence and you are feeling down and just wanting to feel good afterwards. This is not the movie for those who want something deep, meaningful and spiritual. Walk Like A Man is an hour or so of weird fun with an awesome message at the end. I brought a copy of Walk Like A Man from Amazon.COM on DVD and at 46 I still enjoy watching. OyVey who knows if I will ever grow up AND LOVING IT!
TWO THUMBS UP!!.......2004-09-19

WATCH THIS MOVIE...I don't know if it's in the stores...but I'm watching it on my Directv and I'm still watching it as I write this review..this movie is Very, Very, Good...TWO THUMBS UP!

Ineffective French Caper Film with Bellucci, Pinon and Karyo.......2005-03-30
Four intersting European actors save the film from being forgettable. They are Monica Bellucci (for whom most of the viewers visit this page), Donimique Pinon (regular in French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films), Tcheky Karyo, and Michel Muller ('Wasabi').
'Like a Fish out of Water' is a French caper film intended to be comical, violent, and thrilling at the same time. The story is just OK, about the three crooks who tricks one timid French middle-aged guy 'Desire' (Muller) into a scam. The three --- Karyo as leader BB, Bellucci as femme fatale, and Pinon as trigger-happy handyman -- want to get a fish. In fact, it's a very expensive one, so they need a specialist to convince the owner, who happens to be a big boss in underworld.
The rest of the film is about their plans, which are original at one place -- it's 'fish out of water' so here's certainly one originality. All I can say is that Monica Bellucci plays the important role in it. And it doesn't happen many times, but she is supposed to be playing a comical role.
In spite of well-drawn characters supported by good acting, the film lacks pace and rhythmn. The caper is not thrilling enough, the gags are not funny enough, and most uncomfortable thing is its sudden introduction of violence. One character is beaten by Pinon's character without any apparent reason but he was offended. The characters suddenly start to drop dead at the certain point of the film, and they leave no impression on us whatsoever, as if their presence is cut abruptly short simply because the film does not need them any more.
One thing about Monica Bellucci. I may be mistaken, but she has seldom (or never) smiled on screen after she gained her international fame. In this film, she tries to show her different side, but because of her character, or perhaps her acting, Ms. Bellucci (whose character's truths I won't disclose here) remains very aloof, or sometimes slightly icy. In this film, she surely laughs, if not smiles. But I have never seen her smiling anywhere else.
For those who are interested in gifted actors in Europe, or caper film in European situation, this film is a good choice. But the story is mediocre, and the direction slack for all good acting.
Only because of Monica. Picture quality very poor..........2003-09-24
If you are watching this, I guess it is highly likely that you are interesed in Monica Bellucci, like me. She is as stunning as ever in this movie, BUT not as sexy as in Malena, or as 'exposed' as in Irreversible.
Otherwise, I would say this is only a so-so movie. The story is interesting, but I think it just can be better (either more funny or more violent).
The worst part of this DVD is its quality - the color quality is like fade painting...very disappointing.
Great cast/ average comedy / disapointing dvd.......2002-07-01
an enjoyable hybrid, drama-comedy (although a tad flawed)
the plot..
an aging con man known as B.B (tcheky karyo), and his partner, Myrtille (monica bellucci), persuade a lovesick sap named Desire Poilvin (michel muller) to help them steal a rare fish from a wealthy collector.
their accomplice (dominique pinon), however, turns their planned caper into a bloodbath.
___________________________________
great cinematography, some scenes have a monotoned color, the ensemble is visualy impressive..especialy for this genre.
the cast:
is really brilliant,..there's dominique pinon (better known for his previous films such as Amelie, Delicatessen , the city o the lost children, foutaises etc...), surprisingly, there's also monica bellucci,(she rarely plays in comedies),she and michel muller steals the show.
there's also a personal fav of mine , Tcheky karyo (La femme nikita , the king is dancing , My life so far , the dobermann , the bear, BLUEBERRY....etc..).
and a cameo apearnce from Jose Garcia (trouble every day , beaumarchais the scoundrel, jet set , le boulet..etc)
overall, the acting is great,(sort of hysterical in some scenes), but the problem with this film is the constent mood/change,the story constently jumps between your average comedy to a dead serious drama.
ultimately "a fish out of the water", is not very memorable..but its still worth watching.
the dvd version of "like a fish out of the water", contains only two different possibilities..[play] and [chapter selection]
