Albert Brooks proves there's laughs after death with this almost heavenly comedy--almost heaven as in Judgment City, where recently perished Daniel Miller (Brooks) learns whether he is worthy of advancing to a higher plane of existence or will be sent back to earth for another incarnation.

His fate will be determined in a very special trial, during which scenes from his life are replayed on a giant screen. "Isn't it realistic?" a judge asks. "It makes some people nauseous." While the steely prosecutor (Lee Grant) will try to prove that Daniel failed in life to face his fears and insecurities, his glad-handing, reassuring defender (Rip Torn) will argue on behalf of this hapless "little brain" (a Judgment City term for residents of earth).

As Woody Allen did for the future in Sleeper, so does Brooks create an original vision of the afterlife. In Judgment City, white-robed residents can eat as much as they want without guilt or fear of gaining weight. They can also visit the Past Lives Pavilion, where they are greeted by a hologram of--who else--Shirley MacLaine.

Daniel finds himself touched by an angel. Meryl Streep gives an enchanting performance as Julia, whose exemplary life is in stark contrast to his. During her trial, the court watches in rapture as she saves not only children, but a cat from a burning building.

Daniel and Julia are a match made in Judgment City, but first Daniel must summon up the courage to express his true feelings for her, or she will surely advance without him.

Defending Your Life is Brooks's most ambitious film and, with Mother, his most accessible. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars DEFENDING ALBERT BROOKS.......2007-07-01

This is Mr. Brooks at his side-splittingest and most sardonic as he prepares to enter the afterlife and must defend the decisions he made in life. This film is clever on all levels. Casting Meryl Streep as someone who has nothing to defend was a stroke of genius. Watch for Shirley MacLaine in a howlingly funny cameo. I have watched this again and again to make up for all the people who didn't see it in the theaters. I have given it as a gift many, many times to people who have never heard of it. I hate to use the term "feel-good" as it is overworked with regard to film, but when this one ends, I'm happy that I watched it.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Comedy.......2007-06-27

I agree with most of what good things everyone says about this movie - I saw it in the theatre when it came out and bought it on DVD, although I'm a tad disappointed there aren't any extras on the DVD. Albert Brooks has always made me laugh but it's nice to see Meryl Streep possibly enjoying a film role for once - it seems like a good pairing of two cerebral actors - you may laff when you hear Brooks' name and the word cerebral in the same sentence but his movies have always made me think he has a good insight into the human psyche. The middle of the film where Lee Grant shows his various mistakes is hilarious and make you think that Brooks' character is just outside of being passed on to Heaven, until the last part of the movie - Rip Torn is his usual funny self, and his ambiguity and vagueness comes off as funny.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-06-10

A good look at The Other Side a.k.a. Heaven. Eating whatever you want, past life regression, moving on. A movie I believe gives people some real good insight into the afterlife. A positive outlook for paradise.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking afterlife .......2007-05-12

Family friendly (no bad words), thought provoking movie about the afterlife and what might happen to get all the way into the pearly gates....reviewing your life....not just the bad and good you did, but how you handled yourself (self doubt, self confidence, etc.). I enjoyed it and have watched it at least 3 times.

5 out of 5 stars got it from Netflik and then bought it here before it was even over!.......2007-05-04

Presented by John Houseman's Acting Company and originally broadcast on PBS, this 1976 production of William Saroyan's The Time of Your Life was endorsed by the playwright, who provided its voice-over prologue. That's enough to recommend this production, but Saroyan's approval is only one measure of the production's success. Written in 1935 and winner of the Pulitzer Prize (which Saroyan refused to accept), the play captures the mixture of melancholy and hope that emerged between the Great Depression and World War II. Among the denizens of Nick's Bar in San Francisco, Joe (played with rich subtlety by Nicholas Surovy) best embodies the tenacious optimism that Nick's regulars adopt as a defense against a cold, cruel world. They're self-deluding but likable survivors, and Patti LuPone is at her heartbreaking best as two-dollar whore Kitty Duvall. That's 29-year-old Kevin Kline doing fine work in a brief appearance, joining these downtrodden dreamers who, in Saroyan's world, become heroes of the heart. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning play revolves around the denizens of a San Francisco bar in 1939. Lonely, lovelorn, weary or cynical, the characters drift in and out of the bar and each other's lives, giving voice to Saroyan's philosophies as they randomly comment about the impending world war, the beauty of art, and traditional notions of good and evil. At least one of the relationships stands a chance of enduring: a brawny innocent named Tom is falling in love with a vulnerable young prostitute named Kitty. Saroyan himself is heard reciting the play's prologue.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-11-04

You will LOVE this DVD! It talks of a simpler time, possibly even a happier time when technology hadn't taken over the world. When we put our trust in people, not machines. A time when people actually cared for one another. Of course there was still a social food chain, but it was different. Kids played in the street with each other, not with their iPods. You could talk to a stranger with little risk. There was still crime of course but the word "terrorism" did not exist. It takes place in 1939, Pre-WWII, and things were different. If nothing else you will appreciate the little things like being able to buy a beer with the change in your pocket, a bottle of champangne was six dollars (which was a fortune). A young Kevin Kline and Patti LuPone are among the most famous faces (they were courting at the time I believe). You must see this DVD! SUPERB!

    5 out of 5 stars What's the dream?.......2002-04-14

Saroyan's best play, written in a week in 1939, brings both the color and foreboding of that period vividly to life. By turns funny and heartbreaking, the play manages to extract the poignancy of the human experience from the seemingly chaotic comings-and-goings of a shaggy collection of tavern denizens, led by "Joe." If you're not moved or amused by the events that transpire on a late afternoon in Nick's Entertainment Palace, then you really haven't lived enough. Boring this play is not.

2 out of 5 stars Time of your Life...Not while watching this DVD.......2002-03-11

I am sorry to say that I was very much let down when I first watched this DVD. I think that the story line is just boring. The fact that they filmed it without an audience makes it lose something. The only reason to own this DVD is if you are a huge Patti LuPone fan. But even she is not at her best here. I would pass this one up if I were you.

Great Movie Plenty of Great Characters.
We are "AVID" Movie collectors and have over 1200 titles and a few months ago had purchased "The time of Your Life" #865.
We finally tried to watch the DVD but found that three quarters of the way through the movie it lock up and will not play on any of the 5 DVD players we have, we put the disk in our computers and found that the video file is corrupted on the disk.
Needless to say we will not be buying any titles from "VINA Distributor" has from this point on. Plus the resolution is bad less that 640X480 "You must be joking".

      5 out of 5 stars heartwarming.......2006-09-08

I love this film - eccentric people show up at a bar in San Francisco - Cagney's character just watches them come and go, listens, helps them along. That's it. If you're looking for action - go elsewhere. The scene never leaves the bar. Originally a play by William Saroyan.
My favourite quote from the play/movie is "Living is an art, it's not bookkeeping. It takes an awful lot of rehearsal for a man to get to be himself." -

2 out of 5 stars Interesting character study. Not the best movie though........2004-06-04

Just watched The Time of Your Life on DVD. I give it ** out of five stars.

      Things I'd never seen before:

-The opening credits as a dramatis personae, listing a description of the
      character each actor plays.

      -Pinball called the marble game.

      What I liked about it:

-Jeanne Cagney - Did Jimmy force them to give her a contract? I had her in
the not like column, but she grew on me as the film went on.

-The tap dancer - Loved the political speech dance

-Kit Carson - Especially when he called Blick totally unreliable

-The marble player - loved the way you forget all about him until he wins
      the game. Cool marble game

      -The ritsy couple

-William Bendix - perfect as the bar owner

      -Tough guy Blick. Very intimidating.

What I didn't like about it:

-At times it drug and made me think of a slow episode of Cheers or a tv
movie of Billy Joel's "Piano Man." Some good scenes, but not a very good
      movie.

-Jimmy Cagney - Not at his best in a slow moving film. He's better in fast
      talking, action sequences.

When James Cagney starred in the 1948 movie adaptation of The Time of Your Life, it was hotly debated whether William Saroyan's stage play was really filmable at all. Because of its small cast, because all the action takes place on a single claustrophobic set, because the "plot" consists entirely of sub-plots, and because Saroyan's "dirty sentimentality" isn't to everyone's taste, such doubts are still understandable today.

However, accept the movie for what it is--a play in a box--and you'll be captivated. The story revolves around a down-at-heel bar-restaurant, where a group of disparate characters come and go as their stories gradually unfold. They include an ex-prostitute desperately seeking a new life, a dancer looking for a break into show business, a down-and-out who discovers a vocation as a pianist, and a beer-sodden cowboy. This gaggle of misfits is presided over by an enigmatic, champagne-drinking philanthropist (brilliantly played by Cagney) who gently nudges them towards their goals while indulging his own fascination with the minutiae of daily life. --Roger Thomas

      Description

Based on a William Saroyan play, and tells the story of Nick's Saloon and the characters who frequent this waterfront dive in San Francisco. Cagney plays a saloon philosopher, drinking and listening to the stories of his friends there while also offering some eccentricities of his own.

Needless to say we will not be buying any titles "VINA Distributor" has from this point on.

3 out of 5 stars "Here's two dollars; go get me a map of the world and a good revolver.".......2005-09-28

Nick's Bar is a place where you can "come in and be yourself."

The sign says so; and everyone does so.

For Joe, being himself is drinking champaign all day while teaching Tom all the skills he'll need in life, defending Kitty Duvall's honor from a bullying policeman (some things never change!) and humoring an old cowboy with more stories than he can remember having told.

"Did I ever tell you about the time I was married to a midget weighing thirty-nine pounds?"

I've noticed that at least three other reviewers drew comparisons to the teevee show Cheers, which I found vacuous and shallow. Nick's is the bar that the cast of Cheers WISHES they were in.

Remember the sign ["Come in and be yourself"]?

In the final scene, Nick himself takes the sign out of the window and tears it up, saying, "Enough is enough!" reminiscent of BobGod's great stage play "Ronald Smith's Closet" used as an improvisational training tool at Ned Mandarino's School of Transpersonal Acting in the seventies and eighties.

I suspect many an aspiring writer has spent too much time in a bar looking for artistic inspiration. I get this inpression from all of the "dramas" that take place in taverns. Some, like "The Iceman Cometh", are topnotch. Others, like "The Time of Your Life", come across mediocre at best. In the case of the latter, I found myself wondering what the point was. We are expected to believe that interesting, intelligent people congregate for innocent fun and frolic. Maybe it does seem like a pleasant place to many but I found myself wondering why there were more employees than customers, why there was a full-time cook when I only saw one person eat while there, why the script was so lame. This was obviously a theatrical play brought to the screen. It may have worked better on stage the way the script moves the spotlight from one charater to another. However, on film I felt this gave the movie a lack of perspective. Most of the vignettes were pretty bland. The humor failed to make me smile, the drama failed to touch me and the suspense bored me. It seemed that there was always the potential to amuse, entertain, or intrigue but the script just wasn't up to the task.

I made it a point to watch "The Time of Your Life" because I noted that James Cagny was the star. I like his acting style and ability (when given at least a reasonable vehicle to preform in). It actually was a sort of family affair with his brother William as the producer and his sister Jeanne as the leading lady. Cagny was decent enough but his role, as well, lacked substance. The movie was from a play by William Saroyan. Saroyan no doubt observed many interesting things from his experiences in taverns. Unfortunately, it appears that he must have been inebriated at the time; no sober writer would have thought that any of this was worth writing about.

4 out of 5 stars Come in and Be Yourself........2002-09-07

THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE was based upon William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning play and was brought about, in part, by a collaboration of the Cagney siblings (James, Jeanne, and William). Except for one brief shot of the Salvation Army singing outside the establishment, the entire movie takes place inside Nick's, a saloon, restaurant, and entertainment palace on the waterfront in San Francisco. James Cagney plays Joe, a man who has a lot of cash and spends his time observing, listening, and helping people and fulfilling his every whim. Wayne Morris plays Tom, Joe's gopher man; Jeanne Cagney plays Kitty, a former "burlesque queen" who falls for Tom; and William Bendix plays Nick. The floating characters at Nick's also include, among others, a lovesick young man, an out of work fellow, a drunk, a cowboy who calls himself "Kit Carson", a pinball wizard, a dancer who is a comedian that has no funny jokes, a police officer, and a couple of socialites.

There really isn't much plot in THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE. However, neither the movie nor the play it was based upon are about "plot". There may not seem to be a lot going on, but actually there is. The plot of the story is it's characters. Each person that comes into Nick's has a story and some of them we learn, some of them we don't. However, while listening to each person (just as Joe does) we learn something about them and in the process we discover things about ourselves. THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE is art in it's highest form because it entertains, yet also enlightens.

The quality of this DVD isn't all that bad, especially considering how inexpensive it is to purchase a copy (the Laserlight edition can be purchased for less than $5). The sound is good through most of the film except for the occasional scratch and the picture is great (the one scene where you can't read what is on the piece of paper was filmed that way intentionally because you are not supposed to see what's written on the paper because it's too small).

Overall a good movie well worth the time to watch it.

            Product Description

Blood on the Sun (1945) Nick Condon is a newspaper reporter working in Tokyo who refuses to toe the Japanese line on the expansionist policies of the anti-democratic Imperialist government. When it become clear to the authorities that Condon isn't going to cooperate and that he has some valuable information and contacts, they decide to get him in their clutches for some interrogations and then dispose of him. Time of Your Life (1948) A dramatic comedy adapted by Nathaniel Curtis from a William Saroyan play. Noted by critics, but slow in getting the respect of movie goers and some Saroyan fans. Joe (James Cagney) holds court at Nicks (William Bendix) little neighborhood saloon. Joe manipulates all who share time and space near him. Action gravitates around Joe. No visual sign of support, but all the while Joe is the positive influence in so many lives. Talk about a potluck of characters: Wayne Morse, Broderick Crawford, Ward Bond, Jimmy Lydon and Jeanne Cagney. James Barton is hilarious as the affable old cowboy. And the man playing the piano is Reginald Beane in his one and only movie. Respectable black and white glimpse of life in the neighborhood.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD ROAN QUALITY.......2004-09-07

These movies are issued by a myriad of companies. I only have this set so I can't comment on the comparative quality. I can state that I am satisfied with the quality of this Roan set. That is, the images are mostly crisp and there wasn't much hiss. The price is a plus also.

I Liked "Time of Your Life" best. It has a good quirky cast and plot. The acting is also first rate. It has a certain stage play feel to it.

"Blood On The Sun" is a more than adequate suspense yarn.

"Something to Sing About" is a fun movie. Its kind of a comedy-musical-drama. Nothing too serious.
