Alternately fascinating and frustrating--and no doubt deliberately so on both counts--this controversial Twin Peaks installment (it was roundly booed by mystified audiences at the Cannes Film Festival) appeared in theaters after the series was canceled, serving as both prequel and coda to the whole remarkable Twin Peaks phenomenon. Designed especially for dedicated followers of the series (it would just bewilder anyone else), Fire Walk with Me further investigates the murder of Laura Palmer by exploring events that took place before the series's brilliant debut feature (Twin Peaks: The Premiere), up to and including the long, dark, terrible night of Laura's death. Familiar Twin Peaks denizens Sheryl Lee, Grace Zabriskie, and Ray Wise (as the three members of the Palmer family), Kyle MacLachlan, Peggy Lipton, James Marshall, Dana Ashbrook, Miguel Ferrer, Mädchen Amick, and director David Lynch himself reprise their series roles (with Moira Kelly subbing for Lara Flynn Boyle as Donna Hayward), joined by an equally motley group of guest stars, including Harry Dean Stanton, David Bowie, Chris Isaak, and Kiefer Sutherland. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Do You See Creamed Corn On This DVD?.......2007-05-07
Naturally, it's Twin Peaks fans that will get the most out of this film coz that's the audience this film was made for. Sure, any fan of David Lynch will watch this movie whether they've seen the show or not, but it'll end up being confusing. Even though it's a prequel to the series' events, it's made for those familiar with the plotlines from the show. Characters will appear in one scene and will never be seen again, leaving those unfamiliar saying, "who was that and what the hell did he have to do with anything?" Not to mention Laura's killer not being a secret at all . Even some fans were let down by this one coz many were expecting answers and probably ended up with more questions than anything. Typical of Lynch though, eh? The movie is definitely Lynch all the way. It has the same slow, dreamy feeling of most of his films. Of course it's full of oddball characters who's only purpose is to say goofy things and act weird. But among all this strangeness, there is a story. With an R rating, you get the feeling that this is how the series might have played out if Lynch wasn't bound by the restrictions of network television. The first 40 minutes or so focus on the investigation of the girl murdered one year before Laura Palmer. The investigators are played by Kiefer Sutherland and Chris isaak, who seem right at home in Lynch's FBI world next to characters like Agent Cooper, Albert Rosenfield and Gordon Cole. Once that's done, we jump into Laura Palmer's last few days. My problem with this is the fact that Laura comes across as extremely unlikable. She's always screaming, snorting coke, screwing someone or freaking out somehow. It makes it difficult to work up any sympathy for her considering you kept hearing in the series how loved she was by everyone in the town. I do realize that it was said that in her last few days she began to act strange, and a reoccuring theme throughout the series was that she had a dark side. I guess it does make sense that in her last few days the dark side would be at it's peak, but even with that said, she's still kinda irritating. Also, the appearance of Agent Cooper(the star of the series, but more or less a cameo in the film) seems kinda forced, like he was required to appear coz it's a Twin Peaks movie. His character had nothing to do with anything until Laura Palmer died, but in this film they try to work in some kind of psychic link/premonition thingee with him and Laura that doesn't seem to work so well. Most fans won't care about this though coz they get to spend a little more time with their favorite FBI man. Supposedly Lynch had to leave over an hour of this film on the cutting room floor. In doing this, many characters from the show were completely deleted from the film. Fans have been demanding these lost scenes for years now. I don't know if these scenes would really clear anything up, but they'd certainly be fun to see. Lets hope it happens. All in all, an interesting movie if you've seen the show, and a confusing and seemingly pointless movie if you haven't.
A must have for Twin Peaks fans!.......2007-03-29
If you own the series on VHS, you will want to add this to your collection. I wish as many others do that the publishers would make the series box set on DvD. My VHS tapes are still in exellent condition, but we all know the disc boxed set would last longer & have even better picture quality. They could only stand to profit. I would definitely buy it. If you never watched the series or even if you have but not this movie, know that it deals with, shows the darkest side of a demented man with a heart and soul that is just a cosmic black hole. Not for children of any age.
Kyle McLaughlin is fun to watch in his role in this & the series.
If you like David Lynch, you like this this off & dark movie which shows you the days previous to & the night of Lara Palmers death & killer.
Even the angels can't save me........2007-02-10
I was tempted to hit five stars, but I'll save my gushings for the review. You other Lynch fans out there know what you like and we know what to expect--the unxexpected. When the series, Twin Peaks, came out was when I bought a vcr--so not to miss an expisode, even greived when it went off the air. This movie takes up the last few day of Laura's life and us through a nightmare world of roaring and howling parallel universies that seem the only logical avenue to illustrate the horror Laura goes through. I love what one reviewer said, that Lynch had to love this character to make the viewer so compassionate towards her. Striking soundtrack and cinematography that thrills with the bleakness of the trailer park and the saturation of the "white lodge"?--where Laura ultimately goes. The scene between Laura and Log Lady is magnificent: When the fire starts, all innocence is in danger (my paraphrase of a much better scene)says LL to Laura. And when the siren Julee Cruise sings "Questions in a World of Blue," the angels indeed, as Laura says, cannot help her.(Note the scene when the angel disappears from the stylized picture of the 1940's.) Lynch's dialogue always wows: Donna: "Where are the cookies?" Laura: You mean Fred and Ginger?" Donna: "Ah, dancing." Nobody, but nobody can write such dialogue. I saw Blue Velvet first (maybe my all time fav. movie) and was hooked. Twin Peaks came next. The girl running out of the school building looking like a 1950's scream queen--mainlining Lynch ever since. Lynch is not for every taste, but he sure is for mine.
And Fiery it is!.......2007-01-05
FWWM is my favorite David Lynch film and the best, most frightening horror film ever made. Sheryl Lee's angelic face walking down the sidewalk provides the perfect counterpoint to what is to follow.
This film excels as psychologigal drama, holloween horror film, and expose of the disfunctional American family and the secrets therein. Lynch abandons the quirky humor used in the series to best effect. This film should be must see for every child abuser along with a jail sentence and I suppose that is one of the reasons some people cannot stomach viewing it. SPOILER>>To me Bob is Laura's denial/inability of her mind to comprehend her father's actions - Bob is LeLand.
I'll never forget the bar scene as the first glimpse of Laura's abandon/desperation is shown then she becomes angry and protective of her friend unable to grasp her contradiction. The redemption scene at the end laughing/crying will touch your psyche and leave you speechless.
Sheryl Lee is an amazing actress.
Underrated film gets too much bashing.......2006-12-27
Most people complain about Twin Peaks: FWWM not having most of the characters from the series, not having any humour, or not wrapping up the cliff hanger ending of the series. By the time the series was towards the end of its run, it was different from David Lynch's original vision so its understandable why he'd want to go back to Laura Palmer.
This is definitely David Lynch's most dark and disturbing film. Its about the last week of Laura Palmer's life, seeing her break down and death. Sheryl Lee gives an amazing performance as the poor girl, with Ray Wise also giving an excellent performance as Leland Palmer.
The film still has that Lynchian weirdness, although its not as confusing as Lost Highway or Mulholland Drive. Anyone who hasn't seen the series should not watch this until they do. And it may take a few viewings to fully appreciate, but Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is a true masterpiece, and in my opinion, David Lynch's best film along with Blue Velvet.

If you've ever wanted to hear Jack Nicholson sing (or try to) or marvel at the sight of Ann-Margret drunkenly cavorting in a cascade of baked beans, Tommy is the movie you've been waiting for. As it turns out, the Who's brilliant rock opera is sublimely matched to director Ken Russell's penchant for cinematic excess, and this 1975 production finds Russell at the peak of his filmmaking audacity. It's a fever-dream of musical bombast, custom-fit to the thematic ambition of Pete Townshend's epic rock drama, revolving around the titular "deaf, dumb, and blind kid" (played by Who vocalist Roger Daltrey) who survives the childhood trauma that stole his senses to become a Pinball Wizard messiah in Townshend's grandiose attack on the hypocrisy of organized religion.
The story is remarkably coherent considering the hypnotic dream-state induced by Russell's visuals. Tommy's odyssey is rendered through wall-to-wall music, each song representing a pivotal chapter in Tommy's chronology, from the bloodstream shock of "The Acid Queen" (performed to the hilt by Tina Turner) to Nicholson's turn as a well-intentioned physician, Elton John's towering rendition of "Pinball Wizard," and Daltrey's epiphanous rendition of "I'm Free." Other performers include Eric Clapton and (most outrageously) the Who's drummer Keith Moon, and through it all Russell is almost religiously faithful to Townshend's artistic vision. Although it divided critics when first released, Tommy now looks likes a minor classic of gonzo cinema, worthy of the musical genius that fueled its creation. --Jeff Shannon

trippy.......2007-06-10
if you want to see the epitome of a trippy, psychedelic rock musical, this is for you
not meant to be watched sober.......2007-06-05
this movie was, im sure, (althought i havnt tried myself... and wont) was made to be watched while under the infulence of... anything really..but watching it sober just makes the songs drive you flippin crazy (its quite repetative) and the story make no sense...in fact the subject matter is as bad as a clockwork orange so i definately do not reccomend this film for anyone under 18. But the cast is impressive.
Heroic attempt at visualizing Pete Townsend's story.......2007-06-04
`Tommy', directed by famous auteur, Ken Russell, may be less notable as an important movie in its own right than as evidence of the importance of Pete Townsend and The Who's achievement in realizing this most notable of stories in a virtually pure Rock dialect, in the very alien genre of Opera, or even of musical theatre in general.
(Note that while I will not argue against `Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' as the most important Rock album of all time, `Tommy' has always been closer to my heart, reinforced by the fact that I saw TheWho perform the music of `Tommy' live, just four days after the original release of the album. Just so you know where my preferences lay.)
While there have been several essays in fusing Rock with other genres, especially in using Rock as the music for dramatic works (see `Hair', `Godspell', `Jesus Christ Superstar'), Townsend succeeded not only by coming up with a really original story, but also by limiting himself almost exclusively to classic Rock instrumentation. (The most notable exception to this fact is John Entwistle's French Horn riffs.)
If you want to get the story of `Tommy', see my review of the album. I applaud Russell, the director and co-writer, with sticking remarkably close to the original plot and music, in spite of the fact that the original album contains a scant 70 minutes, with at least one famously boring long track, the `Underture', at the end of the original first vinyl disk. The main problem with the movie may be that Russell rarely succeeds on improving on his source material. An example of what I mean is the song `Singing in the Rain', which appeared in at least three movies before its being made the famous centerpiece of the movie of the same name, with the great choreography and performance from Gene Kelly, accompanyied by umbrella, lamppost, and downpour. This was a great use of pre-existing material.
In Russell's case, only the three scenes in which the movie's most famous guest performers appear come close to elevating the material to new highs. These are the scenes with Eric Clapton as the preacher, Tina Turner as the acid queen, and Elton John as the Pinball Wizard. All three give superior performances as both singer and instrumentalist, but Russell's business and his special effects ohh-la-la may not work as well as he would have hoped. Other scenes, especially ones featuring the famously madcap The Who drummer, Keith Moon as Uncle Ernie and some of Russell collaborator Oliver Reed's scenes really don't seem to work as well as they might. Ann-Margaret does better than Reed, but this will probably not be at the top of her resume.
The finest thing about the movie is that Townsend's most brilliant premise behind the plot does not get lost in Russell's realization. In fact, I'm even tempted to say that Russell teases out of Townsend's lyrics some meanings which may have escaped me during my zillion or so listens to the album. With Daltry's journeyman acting, Russell is able to depict the `autistic' Tommy, made deaf, dumb, and blind by suggestion rather than by physical deformity. The next best thing about the movie is that Russell and his musical staff which stretched Townsend's score to fill some empty corners here and there do not make any major changes to Townsend's arrangements. The score is still basicly played by the gloriously energetic The Who ensemble of vocalist Roger Daltry and friends, guitar(s) (Townsend, Clapton, and rhythm), base (John Entwistle), and totally insane drums of Keith Moon, plus piano, French horn, and minor grace notes here and there.
Since Russell preserves the integrity of Townsend's music, this is an excellent view for fanatic `Tommy' fans, and even for those who have a special interest in either Ken Russell or the more exotic corners of Rock, especially `The Who' lore. Unfortunately, as a cinematic achievement, it is no match for some of Russell's other works such as `Women in Love'.
As one who saw The Who (with Keith Moon) do 'Tommy' live, I can say that the movie offers more than just watching The Who perform on stage, and that's saying a lot
Pure genius.......2007-05-23
One of the key titles of the seventies and of the counterculture spirit, and a truly "tour de force" of surreal and sarcastic visual invention. Iconoclast and subversive british director Ken Rusell filmed in 1975 this satyrical rock opera with synthetic and rabidly mesmerezing visual imagination using many of the icons ( from psychodelic designs and underground imaginary to the musical pop stars of the moment: Tina Turner; Elton John and Eric Clapton make self-parodic cameos in the movie ) of the age so as some of the topicals of Hollywood melodrama to build a sardonically kitsch revision of the british Establisment; the cynicism and obscure interests of organized religion and the star system deliriums through the story of Tommy: a blind, deaf and dumb middle-class child who becomes a sort of messiahnic pinball star. Music and lyrics by the mythical band The Who.
Widescreen edition.
WOW!!!.......2007-04-29
It is actually an extraordinary movie - sometimes we initially don't perceive the quality of a particular work of art, then later on we finally grasp how great it is. The stupendous amount of work on the director's part, to invent and make happen the scenes of this movie, floors me. Everything in this story is actually symbolic not "over the top" any more than our sleep-time dreams are "over the top". The singing is perfectly good, and there's nothing wrong with Jack Nicholson's or Oliver Reed's singing, just like in most musicals it is desired and enjoyed, and it fits in perfectly well, that actors sing in their ordinary untrained voices. And the musings and discoursings on the subject of spiritual enlightment (which is what this movie and this story are really all about - bravo Pete Townshend for such a brilliant tour de force - how can such a young man have understood so much?), rendered entirely symbolically, are quite deep, extraordinary and... enlightening.

Comedy Central's creatively crass "after-school special," Strangers with Candy, takes a well-deserved curtain call with this feature film version of the series. Canceled (some fans felt prematurely) after only three seasons, each SWC episode told the story of Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris), the 46-year-old former "boozer, user, and loser" who goes back to high school to pick up "exactly where (she) left off."
The principal audience for this film will be folks who already know the show and need a Candy fix, and they'll be relieved to find that most of the original cast has returned. Co-creators Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello are there (Dinello also directed the movie), and other favorites include Greg Hollimon as Principal Onyx Blackman; Maria Thayer as Jerri's best girlfriend, Tammi Littlenut; Deborah Rush as Jerri's wicked stepmother; and David Pasquesi as her stepmother's lover, Stew. (A few key supporting characters, including Jerri's ethnic friend Orlando, and her half-brother Derrick, have been recast.) The smaller parts are filled out by the biggest stars, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, and Philip Seymour Hoffman; Broderick deserves two thumbs up for his turn as the superstar science teacher, Dr. Roger Beekman.
SWC the movie plays almost as a Reader's Digest version of the show, with Jerri up to her old tricks, including betraying friends and trying to seduce the popular boys. If diehard fans find any fault with the film, it may be that the script doesn't cover enough new territory; a hilarious opening sequence of Miss Blank in prison, for example, only leaves one wanting more. For those who haven't yet matriculated with Jerri, the best way to get to know her wickedly misguided ways is through the series. The show was like cake... the movie is just the icing. --Leah Weathersby

for heaven's sake-it's ok, not horrible!.......2007-06-07
Granted, it's not as good as the TV series. But, it does give us a chance to watch most of the old crew in action and they make a pretty good run of it! It certainly has it's moments (the joint-smoking freak out floored me!!) and it's nice to see them having fun again. "We all want to be homecoming queen" and we all wish they had made a movie a little more like the tv series but it's fun just the same, makes ya laugh and I appreciate them doing all the hard work to deliver it to us!
Buyer Beware-This is not like the tv series.......2007-06-04
I should start out by saying I am a huge fan of the TV series. So when I heard about the movie I was particularly excited. So excited in fact, I bought the DVD outright before I even watched the movie. A decision I would come to regret.
While the movie had a few funny moments (or rather, a couple) I hardly laughed through any of the movie. The jokes seemed to just completely fall flat. It also didn't help that some key characters were recast for the movie, further taking away from the experience. With such a talented cast, including some pretty big guest stars, I guess I just expected more out of the movie.
Do yourself a favor, stick with the TV series only. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off take this movie to my local Mega Media Xchange.
VERY FUNNY FIRST HALF LOSES STEAM THROUGH THE SECOND HALF.......2007-05-06
I never really watched the TV series, but my wife enjoyed it. I watched this movie with her and I must admit, it was hard not to laugh. The film did seem to cool down a bit in the secand half, but it was pretty funny overall.

500 TV channels, nothing on! I decided to give this pile of excretement a chance. I lasted 15 minutes, wanted to stick a water pick into my ear to clean out of my brain what I had just seen. Luckily in time, memory fades!
Can you imagine foreigners watching this "thing"? No wonder we're hated!
What a waste of millions of dollars, what a waste of everything. Great scipts laying around that don't get produced, but dreck like this does. Obviously everyone involved was under the influence of controlled substances if they think anything in this movie was funny. You know the same phenomenon that happens with Will Farrel movies.
I don't know what an Amy Sedarkis is or IF she's supposed to be funny. Walking around with an over-the-top expression on your face like you've been constipated for the last 6 months is NOT funny. From now on wherever I see her name, RUN!!!!!!!
Mixed bag.......2007-03-11
I was never a member of the cultish fan base that belongs to 'Strangers With Candy' (I preferred the somewhat similar 'Upright Citizens Brigade' far more, around the same time -- both airing on Comedy Central), but I did always enjoy the show when I happened to catch it, simply because it was so unique and absurd. Honestly, it was a bit strange hearing that they were making a transition to film so long after the show began, but naturally I was up for it and hoped for the best... and I was pretty disappointed.
The lamest aspect of this film is that it doesn't do anything differently than the show did for a great deal (!) of years. What's up? I mean, sure, we are to expect an overall ambience that is familiar, but I couldn't differentiate the movie from any particular episode, aside from the (overlong, at only an hour and a half) running time. It's Jerri doing the same schtick, with the unchanged type of people in the high school. Yes, that's fine and all, but if this is your tact, then you'd better provide consistently funny writing and, if it's not asking too much, some sort of interesting storyline. Yeah.... 'Strangers With Candy' is not armed with such pleasures.
I've always admired Amy Sedaris' ability to showcase her character as utterly repulsive, not so much mentally but physically. I mean, ugggggly; there's very little chance you'd think the actress playing Jerri underneath the makeup and expressions would be remotely normal looking, but Sedaris is, aesthetically, arguably a truly beautiful woman. I mean, what attractive actress would have the balls (figuratively _!_) to put themselves in such a position? None I can think of. But more than that, Sedaris really --is-- a brilliant comedian. I tend to come from the vantage point that, as sexist as it may sound, females lack the cardinal comedic abilities that make the paramount male comedians out there so outstanding -- just look at the rarely-changing inclination of the most renowned female comedians to possess more male personality attributes than female -- but there are exceptions... Sedaris, as Jerri Blank, is one of them... In this movie rendition, she has just as many moments that don't work as ones that do, but the ones that do prevail, soar... As with such performances, communicating the true magnificence with words is ultimately an act shrouded in futility, but I'd say that her manic, subtle bodily expressions and grotesque vocal delivery are most responsible for the humorous glory. And, with this overall execution of character, she accomplished what so few performers have allowed me to witness, providing an utterly unique sense of humor and wit that noone else can claim to possess. Again, it doesn't always work (and I personally think the direction is mostly to blame for this, even if the funniest moments must also be proudly accountable to the same director), but its oft radiance overcomes this.
So really, it's these glimpses of genius that make the movie at all worth watching. There are some completely wasted cameos by great actors (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Matthew Broderick), and characters such as Paul Dinello's art teacher, that I've seen be so funny in the show, are near worthless. I will, however, admit that Stephen Colbert's performance is absolutely hysterical (intensely demanding his classroom to turn around so he can weep miserably). I have mixed feelings about Colbert -- I revere him for being partly responsible for much of Cartoon Network's 'Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law", but I can't really stand his political personality -- thankfully, his behavior in both the show and movie is a riot.
Overall, as a full-out experience, I'd probably bestow 'Strangers With Candy' two stars. Yet, like so many of my most treasured [live-action] shows ('Upright Citizens Brigade', 'Mr. Show', 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'), the greatness often arrives in spontaneous bursts, albeit at amply consistent intervals... and this greatness helps overcome so much of the mediocrity that can be found elsewhere in 'Strangers With Candy'. In this case, I honestly posit the particular trend is due more to laziness than, say, an unavailing result of over-ambition (with something like 'Mr. Show'), but I don't really mind that.
I will also mention that, in my opinion, it's pretty feasible the people who aren't able to reap anything from the movie's finer moments, will, as a whole, regard the movie an utter abomination.
I think [hope] I got my points across (with WAY more words than I'd have liked)...

Ah, remember those good old days when father ruled the roost, keeping a tight rein on the money, the kids, and the docile wife? Well, neither does Clarence Day (William Powell), the title character in Life with Father. Taking place in New York in 1883, this charming comedy purports to show the life of a strict father managing his house and his family, only to be constantly--and unknowingly--out-manipulated by his somewhat ditzy wife, Vinnie (Irene Dunne). Day is terrifying enough that maids keep quitting, but Vinnie manages to keep Day under control--that is, until she discovers that he was never baptized. A battle ensues as she desperately tries to ensure that they will one day meet in heaven, and all the while he severely maintains that the church has no business messing with a man's soul. Meanwhile, young Clarence Day Jr. (Jimmy Lydon) is busy falling for visiting Mary Skinner (played gigglingly by Elizabeth Taylor), and his brother John concocts a money-making scheme that involves the selling of a rather dubious potion. The costumes, the characters, and the wonderful story line--based on a play that was based on the memoir written by Clarence Day Jr.--make this a delightful movie that's perfect for a family-film night. --Jenny Brown

DVD of Life With Father.......2007-03-13
This is one of my favorite movies, however this version on DVD is a very poor one. The sound was somewhat garbled and the picture is very grainy. I enjoy the movie so I watched the entire contents, but it wasn't very enjoyable because of the quality.
Lost Art.......2007-03-09
Why don't they make movies like this anymore? A great film, very charming. Great for the family.
sound was warbled.......2007-01-19
This film is one of my favorites, for this reason I've been wanting to own it. I first purchased this dvd last year, through another source. I returned it due to bad quality in the sound, especially when Irene Dunn spoke, it made it very difficult to enjoy the film. I thought it may have been a bad batch of copy, so I decided to wait awhile before trying to buy it again. I saw this current dvd, showing different graphics on the jacket, and ordered the dvd again in hopes this copy would be good. It was not. I have seen this film shown on TCM on cabel TV, and the picture is good and the sound clear. If you have a dvd recorder and are able to copy from cable, that is your best bet with this one. I have ordered several dvd's through Amazon and have had no problems in any way, and would order through them again in future, just not this particular film. I wish a review like this had been written when I first had the thought to own "Life With Father", it would have saved me time and money in the effort.

wonderful film and story - horrible video transfer.......2007-01-11
This is a wonderful period piece of a Victorian family in New York. However, the transfer to DVD is a disaster. It is almost impossible to hear or understand the dialog as it sounds like it was done with a scratched record. It is so disturbing that my students stopped paying attention and asked me to shut it off, which I did. I haven't watched it since. It's too bad because it is a great film. If you can find the VHS version you will be thrilled.

Two great movies in poor quality.......2007-04-06
(This DVD is region 1 encoding)
My Man Godfrey and Life With Father are two wonderful movies. They are fun, enjoyable, and quite amusing. This version of them, however, is sadly of poor quality. The sound quality is not as good as other versions out there and the video quality is atrocious. The resolution is so bad that you can see the pixels easily. I recommend enjoying these films, but enjoying them is hard when watching them in such poor quality. Although slightly more expensive, other distributions are vastly superior.

Great Film;Shoddy Transfer.......2005-10-06
The five star rating is for the film itself. It's a shame that a film of this high calibre is treated so shabbily. Muddy transfer, skipped scenes, heck, my copy even had a big scratch on it. Here's hoping that Warner Brothers, the film's original distributor, finds it fit to release a proper DVD like it has done with so much of it's back catalog. As for the film itself, it is pure comic bliss. William Powell, as the thin-skinned yet lovable father, is just gold here. One of the great comic performances of all-time, period. Irene Dunne as the soft-spoken mother is Powell's equal here. Powell may display all the bluster but in her quietly manipulative way Dunne demonstrates who the real boss of the house is even in pre-suffrage 1888 New York. The film makes some pointed but humorous observations about the social mores of the day. A young Liz Taylor is on hand here but her character seems to be something of an afterthought. Her presence here has probably more to do with her rising starpower than what she can bring to the table.
Qualified five star.......2005-09-05
It is a qualified five star because the movie is 5 star and wonderful but the DVDs I've seen are terrible. I have viewed two versions and found both very sub par (like a badly worn VHS). I wish someone would produce a DVD of this outstanding classic that is worthy of the performances in this delightful and sometimes hilarious through back to a simpler time.
I'm not sure which movie the other reviewer watched, but William Powell plays the father of all BOYS and Elizabeth Taylor plays a young (late teen) family friend infatuated with the oldest son who's headed to Yale in the fall.
Great fun, wish there was a good DVD. Maybe some day, now that the Thin Man series has been re-done in DVD.
Life with Father - ONE OF MY FAVORITE OLD MOVIES.......2005-03-23
Strick Father living in a house full of woman. His wife and daughters. Stars William Powell with large, booming voice, who wants to know who is on the phone. Movie set maybe around the 1920's or later. Mother is played by Irene Dunne.
Elizabeth Taylor played one of the daughters. She could have been maybe 12-15 years old at the time.
A vintage flick. Not Rate, clean cut. More for those that like old Classics. AND, not action, marshall arts, cussing, and guns.
It's a good movie. I RECOMMEND IT!

Customer Reviews:
Elizabeth Taylor fans- GRAB this while you can!.......2006-03-01
I felt very inclined to write a review on this DVD of Liz Taylors three movies that are stuck in public domain hell! It arrived today- and let me tell you- getting my hands on this DVD title was NO easy task! Amazon does not have it- and I got it off of ebay brand new for like $5.00- still sealed. However- some the the sellers that specialize in DVD's on ebay list this DVD as available and then after you pay for it- you get an email telling you it is out of stock. Good luck on your hunt for this release!!
Now about the DVD. I was skeptical about it myself- I rarely buy these public domain titles simply because and to put it bluntly the quality generally sucks. However, I remember years ago getting the Joan Crawford film "Autumn Leaves" on VHS from Goodtimes home video and was shocked to discover the print was fantastic. As a matter of fact when Columbia Tri Star home video renewed the rights and saved Joans film from public domain hell- the print was almost exactly the same. So I knew Goodtimes took pride in what they release.
After reading the above review- my hunt was on for this DVD- as I am an Elizabeth Taylor fan, and having the Liz Taylor signature collection that includes "Father of the Bride"- I had to have the sequel "Fathers Little Dividend"!
Now back to this DVD. The print of "Life with Father" is just so so. Not horrible - not great. I wasnt really looking for thie film anyway- it is a bonus that it is included. The colors in this film are off- it looks like a colorized version. It may be- I havent done my homework so I dont know if it was filmed in color or not - but it is definately a watchable copy.
"Fathers Little Dividend"- can I say how PLEASED I am with this transfer!! Granted it is not a "remastered" WB title- but let me tell you it is the BEST print you will find. SKIP all the other public domain releases- this is the BEST. I was actually overly pleased. The black and white was even, there is specs floating about on the print- but the best way I can describe this print would be - it is like an official WB/MGM title released on VHS - (remember how MGM home video was releasing classics on VHS like crazy - minus the remastering that is so common today)- however sharper and more defined - without the graininess of VHS. It is really a very good print- just dont compare it to the new WB DVD rematered prints of black and white films.
"The Last Time I Saw Paris"....aaaahhhh this is the last time you will need to look for a better print- unless offically released from WB. GREAT COPY! The color is very good- the picture is very sharp- which I was worried about when I saw the opening credits- then when the movie officially starts it is clear- sharp- again- DONT expect WB DVD quality here- but also DONT expect the worse. The sound and picture are great and Elizabeth Taylor is a true knockout in this film- she is gorgeous and this DVD does her justice. The film does have the constant speckles running through it- but easily overlooked.
Even the packaging of this DVD is great. The cover art is well done. THANKS to Goodtimes! This is really a GREAT DVD for $5.00 of three films that are stuck in public domain.
I seriously recommend you fans get this while you can. It is harder and harder to find. You will likely not find it in any store- I know I couldnt. It is worth it. Again, dont expect digitally remastered quality- think again of the quality as an official VHS_ however clearer- and sharped- for DVD. Enjoy!
Elizabeth Taylor Triple Feature.......2005-10-26
Just a wonderful carefully done transfer using new double sided technology, which allows all 3 movies to be placed on the disc and still preserving the higher transfer rate which equals better detail. Color is true, original was in great shape, and the Dolby Digital soundtrack is clear. I have seen these movies remastered before, but this Good Times remaster is the best of the lot, done with the care these classics deserve! Since two of these are Oscar winners this makes sense, but many so called studios are out for a quick buck, selling bad looking, bad sounding, cut product. Cudos to Good Times for doing the job right. Even the artwork on the package looks first rate! Five Stars.
