Description
If men are from Mars and women from Venus, what planets are mothers and daughters from? Alanna Ubach (Legally Blonde) stars as Amy Holbeck, a 25-year-old New York book editor who dreads her upcoming trip home for the Jewish holidays. Academy Award-nominee Lesley Ann Warren (Victor/Victoria) costars as Glenda, Amy's mother, whose smiles, designer clothes and country club luncheons mask the pain of a rocky marriage and unfulfilled life. With laughter and tears, Amy and Glenda struggle to come to terms with the paths each has chosen, and an understanding and appreciation of each other.

Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) made his first English-language film with this 1984 fantasy about a boy (Barret Oliver) visualizing the stories of a book he's reading. The imagined tale involves another boy, a warrior (Noah Hathaway), and his efforts to save the empire of Fantasia from a nemesis called the Nothing. Whether or not the scenario sticks in the memory, what does linger are the unique effects, which are not quite like anything else. Plenty of good fairy-tale characters and memorable scenes, and the film even encourages kids to read. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful adventure re-visited.......2007-06-04

The wonderful adventure of Bastion on the never ending story was my favorite movie when it was released many years ago. I now have the opportunity to enjoy it all over again with my 5 year old. She is particularly intrigued by the Luck Dragon and wants one. Don't we all.
Enjoy this movie as a family.
Sound recording is a bit poor but I guess it was pre digital and has alot of back ground hiss.

4 out of 5 stars Such a sweet movie.......2007-05-17

I bought this b/c I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. I loved it, and would watch it over and over again. Thing is, I looked around on Amazon, and this movie comes in a set w/ Part 2 and 3. That is where the value is, so look around. You can get 2 movies for the price of one.

If you don't own this movie, ADD IT TO YOUR CART today :)

Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. In fact, it consistently ranks among the top 10 movies ever made in the once-a-decade Sight & Sound international critics poll, placing at number 4 in the most recent survey. (Universal Pictures' spectacularly gorgeous 1996 restoration and rerelease of this 1958 Paramount production was a tremendous success with the public, too.) James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. The detective and the disturbed woman fall ("fall" is indeed the operative word) in love and...well, to give away any more of the story would be criminal. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Vertigo.......2007-06-27

Hitchcock's psychological tingler was not a huge success on release, but understandably has achieved cult status over time. Ambitious, dense and more than slightly twisted, "Vertigo" is both an elaborate puzzler and a meditation on man's basest fears and desires. Though perhaps a trifle old for the part, Stewart brings a barely suppressed desperation to Scotty that resonates, while Novak is ideal in a dual identity role, playing Madonna-like Madeleine, and the garish, earthy Judy, whom Scottie meets later in the saga. Glorious San Francisco locales, and a peerless Bernard Herrmann score complete this winning package from the master of suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Hitchcock at his trippiest..............2007-06-01

VERTIGO remains one of the most thought-provoking films I have ever seen. I still remember my first taste of this film (at least thirteen years ago!). It's safe to say (without exaggeration) that it changed my life and how I view cinematography. Yes, I know that is a tall statement to make about this movie, but it's well-merited. Why? For starters, Alfred Hitchcock's depiction of the medical condition of vertigo (extreme dizziness onset by perceived or actual drops in height--example: standing at the top of a tall staircase and glancing down at the ground floor from where you stand) feels like, both, a deep acid trip (complete with spinning imagery and disorientation), as well as a really extreme look at the effect of this condition on Scotty (James Stewart), a retired policeman, hired by an old friend to follow his beautiful wife (Kim Novak) who believes is possessed by the dead soul of a mad woman. Of course, this woman also has a penchant for ascending to great heights and attempting to jump off of them. This only adds another twist to Scotty's pursuit of the woman.

Alfred Hitchcock always had a flair for bringing the ironic, gothic and darkly comedic all to the foreground, in his films. Cinematography was one way he achieved (and manipulated) these emotions in the stories he wove so eloquently, on screeen. VERTIGO is no exception. What's more, Kim Novak is a very compelling and beautiful actress who stepped out of her more "cheesecake" roles to play the role of Madeleine, a very deeply disturbed (and perhaps, psychologically pursued?) woman with a secret. What's more, I love James Stewart, here. His relationship with Madeleine is conflicted and borders on pseudo-erotic. Of course, I won't divulge more plot details here. I just figured dropping that clue would tease and tantalize you enough to want to see this great film for yourself. I am so glad that it was given the kudos it deserved, with a re-released DVD addition. Great news!!!

4 out of 5 stars Criterion Collection would have done a superior job!.......2007-05-28

This mesmerizing film has been part of our culture for over a half-century. While it has its flaws -- especially in a script that reaches it's climax too early, and tacks on a final twist that is so unsatisfying-- it's a legacy film worth all the praise it has received.

James Stewart and Kim Novak are each remarkable, and the cinematography is perhaps the best of any Hitchcock film. Indeed, so many compelling moments in the film have no dialogue, the camera work is amazing. Bernard Hermann's score is consistently fine, though at times overbearing. The complexities of plot and use of symbols and colors throughout the movie are dazzing.

So why not five stars? Because Universal Home Video screwed up this particular remaster so badly, it interfered with my enjoyment in a BIG way. While the visual transfer is acceptable, the sound remastering is gruesome, with the score blasting several decibels above the voices, with reengineered sound effects produced on a Foley stage, and some critical dialogue marred by rolloff distortion. (Some viewers care about this stuff; others don't.)

Here's the beef. No corporation has the right to re-engineer a film -- especially one of this caliber -- in a way that alters the intent of the fimmaker. If one adds to that the weird balance of score and voice on the DVD, the occasional man-made distorion and trumped-up sound effects -- it's just not right. As for anamorphic widescreen, forget about it. It's not here.

I buy Criterion Collection remasters more than any because they are faithful to the originals, because their extras are meaningful, and because the company simply respects great movies. Their DVDs may cost a little more, but the payoff is worth it. Hopefully, Criterion will secure the rights to this beautiful chiller some day so the next generation can see it the way filmgoers did in the 1950's.

A wonderful psychological thriller poorly transferred and remastered by a company that should have known better.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!.......2007-04-23

This timeless thriller is one I love to watch often on a Sunday afternoon. One of Alfred Hitchcock's greats! James Stewart plays the police detective Scottie Ferguson who suffers from vertigo when in high places after the accidental death of a police friend during a roof chase. The accidental death is partly Scottie's fault and he bears the mental scars. Before he can recover from one blow, he's given another when duped by a beautiful woman and an old friend who have a sinister plot and a part for Scottie to unwittingly play.

5 out of 5 stars One of Hitchock's best!.......2007-04-05

This haunting, mysterious, romantic movie about obsession is amazing every time I watch it. Although Hitchcock didn't originally cast Kim Novak as the source of Jimmy Stewart's affections, he later admitted that she made this movie what it is. The beautiful San Francisco Bay Area is truly a memorable "character" in this fabulous classic.

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime. A Clockwork Orange works on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it. --Bryan Reesman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Clockwork Orange.......2007-07-03

Based on the Anthony Burgess novel, Kubrick's cold, pitch-black satire of modern society received an X rating for violence and was yanked from screens by the rattled director after several copycat crimes. Nevertheless, his chilly vision of a morally ambiguous future world picked up Oscar nods for Best Picture and Director. Outfitted in a bowler hat, white jumpsuit, and codpiece, McDowell gives an iconic performance as Alex, a gleeful connoisseur of brutality who enjoys warbling "Singin' in the Rain" while committing vile acts. A cynical but stylish sci-fi cult hit, "Orange" is a disturbing yet intriguing film in a class all its own.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than the Book.......2007-07-03

There are so few movies that are better than the book from which they have been derived, but this is one of the great exceptions. A Clockwork Orange is a masterpiece of a movie, from one of the great masters of movie making. In my estimation, this movie should be on anylist of the best 100 movies ever made--along with Dr. Stranglove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Full Metal Jacket.

5 out of 5 stars Realist, and Atheist High Art.......2007-06-28

Only an escapist mind can deny the truth in this picture. Only a deranged, and mentally brainwashed mind could possibly beleive people are truly good. People, in reality, rape, kill, and murder, even in the name of some dead guy called Jesus Christ. Nowadays, Satanists are doing the most good. Kubrick, a realist director, has seen reality for what it is, and not only does he present us with Alex(a typic, as I call him)(as in a typical) but he makes Alex, who is man, a beautiful monster with his music, and anarchistic ways. Man is a beast, and kubrick has (realistically) shown the beauty of the beast in heat. Also, kubrick invites us to the sub conscious, with his Freudian imagery, such as the "art" penis. Throughout this movie, society is mean to Alex, but he isn't cured, nor did he ever have a disease. He is just MAN.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Kubrick work.......2007-06-15

Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I think everyone should see it at least once, there's lessons to be learned here for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars An ode to our humble Narrator and Mr. Kubrick..........2007-06-13

#12 on the list of the 50 greatest heroes and villians sits our good friend and humble narrator...ALEX DeLARGE...all of a terrifying, intriguing, Hateful, loved and feared character that we will never forget! By now you've heard it all fROM every other reviewer but i simply see this movie as one of the most influential viewings i've ever sat thru and i had to chime in. The disturbing nature of this beast is only the basis of it's appeal...futuristic law enforcement in the "Ludovico Technique"...Rape,a Brutal Beating,A fight scene straight from the desk of Vince McMahon, An out and out MURDER make this a difficult film to watch for some...I first saw this at age 10 on Showtime in 1980... i was scared to the point that i couldn't stop watching this brilliant tale of Alex and his 3 "Droogs"...here are some cool side notes on the making of the film: an interesting bit involving the scence where Officer Dim and Officer Georgie beat and stuff Alex's head into a bin filled with water...Malcom McDowell almost truly drowned then as his breathing device failed...wow would that have been "real tragic like"...another cool side note is that at the begining point of talks of making this a movie...Mick Jaegger of the rOLLING sTONES actually bought the rights and had planned on making the film starring himself as Alex and the Stones as the DROOGS..."O'H WHAT A TERRIBLE TRAGeDY THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN OH' MY BROTHERS"...Malcolm McDowell still gives me the creeps when i see him...i see Alex...He plays the role of his lifetime that i simply couldn't see anybody else as...The other huge part of the film is the Music...electric synthesized art from Water/Wendy Carlos( the same person...sex change making him...her)and of course LUdwig Van...the bloody 9th that eventually drove Alex thru a top floor window in effort to kill and free himself from the music's sickening torture on him as a response to the Ludovico Technique...He wasn't in the Korova Milk Bar anymore!...Everything from the made up language of NADSAT("Viddy well Lil' Brother...Viddy well") to the music to a brilliant performance and disturbing images of a sac-religeous image of Christ himself to "Ultra Violent images in every possible frame make this a work for the ages that has endured thru the the ultimate test...time......i should only hope for a remake staying true to this brilliant work( i see it inevitable that it be remade)...i hope not, like countless other works...it never stays true to the initial message of the original movie...Kubrick stays with us thru this film as well as the other works he gave us by walking and crashing thru the lines of acceptablity...this is a disturbing 5 star masterpiece of a tradgic 360 of bad to "suedo good" to Ultra Violent Bad again never to be duplicated no matter how many times it is revised...!!!

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. In King's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer, who's settled in for a long winter's hibernation. As many have pointed out, King's protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick's Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him--all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director's fanatical demands for take after take after take.) The Shining is terrifying--but not in the way fans of the novel might expect. When it was redone as a TV miniseries (reportedly because of King's dissatisfaction with the Kubrick film), the famous topiary-animal attack (which was deemed impossible to film in 1980) was there--but the deeper horror was lost. Kubrick's The Shining gets under your skin and chills your bones; it stays with you, inhabits you, haunts you. And there's no place to hide... --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars This Is It........2007-06-29

Yeah, this is it. This is the greatest movie ever made. If you don't, think so then you must not comprehend the sheer importance of any philosophy whatsoever(even if it's no philosophy at all) (don't get confused yet!)You may find this review minimalist, but that is simply due to the straightfoward (actually, not so straightforward) brilliance of this highly intelligent, and realistic picture. People are mean. Jack is mean. Women are scared of mean and angry beasts. Wendy is scared of the mean and angry beast that is her husband. Jack breaks down the door to the other side with his ax. I like to think of Wendy(the bathroom) as the super ego, the door as the ego, and the room with jack as the id. The room containing THE BEAST(which is Man himself) is much larger, and he breaks through, the id thus prevailing, as in reality it obviously does. I watched this film once. It is the gretest use of celluloid, and any other substance in this universe until this day. 7 years later one frame hasn't been forgotten, and I keep figuring things out in my head as I contemplate. I oughta watch it again sometime. It's kinda like Eraserhead for a King.
-"Wonderful party, isn't it?" (that's about how the white men kill the indian settlers, for the hotel is on Indian ground, and then they metaphorically bathe and party in their blood, for the elevator blood is that from the mass genocide of the original sttlers, and natives, and the white men just party, with their lavish gowns and Jack Daniel's(which Jack drinks, in fact yeeeaaahhh!)) Oh! The Horror!

5 out of 5 stars The essential horror film.......2007-06-08

The Shining is one of the greatest films I've ever watched. Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece showcases some of the most suspenseful movie moments ever to be seen, and Jack Nicholson's character is simply amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie!.......2007-05-25

This movie was the scariest I have ever seen! I am serious! Jack Nicholson is the perfect Jack Torrance!!!! He plays his character so sphyco-like! It is one of my favorite movies ever!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jack Nicholson Is Gonna Bash Your Brains In!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-08

This movie is one of my all-time favorite movies. After I watched this for the first time, I watched again. It's one of those movies that everytime you watch it, you find something new. At first, I was so freaked out by everything. But now, everytime I watch it, I get more freaked out. I get so freaked out, I start to laugh. It's just so insane. Steven King did not like this movie. That tells you 1 thing: he's a great author with a terrible taste in movies. This is my second favorite horror movie ever, right behind Halloween. I can't find anything wrong with this. Jack Nicholson gives one of the best performances I have ever seen in any movie. You actually get scared of him. Shelley Duvall also gives a very convincing performance as most of the time she is screaming or shes in silent shock. The big thing about this spine-tingler is the atmosphere. The music literally sends chills up your spine. Another thing that I love is it seems like the hotel is a character in on itself. It's so looming and big and quiet. There are some scenes that are extremely scary because they are so random and they make no sense. There is one scene where Duvall is looking down a hallway and she sees a guy in a suit and a guy in a bear costume doing something sexual and preverted. I don't even know what they were doing, but it scared the hell out of me. This movie is just so chilling from the little kid Danny to the two little girls to the blood flowing from the elevator. It never stops. It's relentless. Hide the children, hide the axe.

The Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho, a dark, violent satire of the "me" culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, "We're rescuing [the book] from its own bad reputation." Harron and co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner (Go Fish) overcome many of the objections of Ellis's novel by keeping the most extreme violence offscreen (sometimes just barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised confidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world of status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreet; even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notable for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument of death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasingly grotesque and insane. --Sean Axmaker

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-18

This is my favorite movie of all time. Christian Bale drew me in when I first saw this movie. Every movie he is in, he always seems to be on top of his game. Sure some of his movie havent been all too great, yet he still puts on a hell of a show. I love the book as well, which is more explict then this. Its a great move.

    5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-06-15

I've got more and more respect for Christian Bale the more I see his movies. This one is excellent.

2 out of 5 stars do you like phil collins?.......2007-06-13

I love this movie, I have since I rented about 5 years ago. I dont' really understand it, I guess I should read the book, but I think It's a really well done movie. Of course Bale is great, i love him as bateman and I also loved the period of the film. The special features on this edition are a different story. The version I already had only included one short featurette that was interesting, but short, and left me wanting more. So, naturally I thought I struck gold with the "uncut killers edition". Too bad most of the special features have NOTHING to do with the movie. A group of about 20 totally random people comment, one at a time, on new york in the eigthies for about an hour. I know that sounds weird, and it is, but its true. TOTALLY RANDOM people that had nothing to do with the movie (most of them). Honestly, I havent watched the movie yet, the special features were all I could handle at the time. There are 5 deleted scenes that add up to about 2 minutes, so this was barely worth it, only because I love this movie so much.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2007-06-10

This is Christian Bale at his best, his performance oozes class. Classic performance in a classic movie. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Buy it. Now I must return some videos...

Franco Zeffirelli's stripped-down, two-hour version of Shakespeare's play stars Mel Gibson as a rather robust version of the ambivalent Danish prince. Gibson is much better in the part than many critics have admitted, his powers of clarity doing much to make this particular Hamlet more accessible than several other filmed versions. The supporting cast is outstanding, including Glenn Close as Gertrude, Alan Bates as Claudius, Ian Holm as Polonius, and Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia. Zeffirelli's vigorous direction employs a lively camera style that nicely alters the viewer's preconceptions about the way Hamlet should look. --Tom Keogh

    Description

Treachery. Madness. Murder. The story of Hamlet has been told for 400 years...but it's never been told like this! Mel Gibson (the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon films) takes on his richest part to date, the title role in a dynamic new version of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo and Juliet, Jesus of Nazareth), the location-shot production has a sumptuous look that won Academy Award nominations for Art Direction and Costume Design. Gibson plays the prince of medieval-era Denmark, who senses treachery behind his royal father's death. Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons) plays Hamlet's mother Gertrude, all too dangerously entangled in that treachery. A brilliant supporting cast, including Alan Bates as Claudius, Paul Scofield as the ghost of Hamlet's father, Ian Holm as Polonius and Helena Bonham-Carter as Ophelia, adds its powerful presence to this immortal tale of high adventure and evil deeds. Big, bold and heroic, this is a vivid and virile Hamlet for the modern age and all time.

Stunning acting by Mel Gibson, Shakespearian art hasn't been lost from this DvD a must buy if you have read the story before or just getting into Shakespeare. Truly a intellectual movie you will watch for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Good enjoyable interpretation........2007-06-04

I liked this version of the tragic prince's tale. As someone who's spent a lot of time studying Hamlet, the portrayal of the closet scene irritated me, but is entirely forgivable. The acting is very good, though the editing and arrangement of the script might throw you for a loop. If you're not a student who's read the play umpteen times, you should be fine though. Regardless, it's very enjoyable, and definitely worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Mel Gibson Does Shakespeare..........2007-06-02

1991's "Hamlet" featured action star Mel Gibson as the melancholy Danish Prince of the title of Shakespeare's famous tragedy. Gibson, whose resume was based on the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon franchises at that time, is surprisingly effective in a role thought be a stretch. Director Franco Zeffirelli had the good sense to let Gibson's energetic performance drive the pacing of a very brisk two-hour version of the story. The result is a very accessible production about murder and revenge in the Danish Royal Family, and a vigorous portrayal of the normally languid and moody Hamlet.

Zeffirelli's movie features beautiful location shooting, excellent costumes, and an extremely talented supporting cast, lead by Glenn Close as Hamlet's mother Gertrude, Alan Bates as the treacherous step-father, and Helena Bonham-Carter as the doomed Ophelia. At the center is Hamlet, as played by Gibson, visibly disturbed in his madness over his father's death, and movingly emotional in his approach to his mother and to Ophelia.

This movie is highly recommended as a different but highly entertaining version of Hamlet. It may appeal most to those without preconceived notions about how Hamlet should be portrayed, or to those who know Mel Gibson only from his later films.

5 out of 5 stars Odd ingredients make maybe the most accessible hamlet .......2007-05-31

I laughed my head off when I was told that Mel Gibson had made a version of Hamlet. But even though casting a then action star as the meloncholy dane made as much sense as casting Charlie Sheen as King Lear, Gibson actually pulls it off, making for a more accessible and relateable Hamlet without cheapening or selling-out the material. The rest of the cast is perfectly acceptable: Glenn Close, Alan Bates, Ian Holm etc. And director Zeffirelli (already a notch on his belt with a definitive version of Romeo & Juliet) brings an interesting visual style to the mix: Matching the film to a rugid, harsh, grey, landscape the mirrors the rugid, harsh, grey content of the film to an effect that would have made Igmar Bergman proud (along with an, of course, wonderful Ennio Morricone score). The play is abridged which means that there isn't nearly enough of (amoung others) Helena Bonham Carter's Ophelia, but I suppose it's better to wish you could spend more time with someone than for them to wear out their welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Hamlet as he should be played.......2007-05-27

I saw this in the theater in 1991. I was familiar with the play and with the way I was taught to understand Hamlet. The problem was that I never believed that the traditional interpretation of Hamlet, as a fairly weak and troubled youth, as it did not seem right to me.

This Hamlet is troubled, no doubt. However, he is wracked with anger and pain. His rage bubbles forth in a sometimes psychotic set of behaviors which always keeps its hold on reality. He is suicidal, but he intends to take any and all villians with him.

This made sense to me. This is how I really saw Hamlet. Mel Gibson does this edge of crazy perfectly. He is not weak, but tortured and seeking revenge.

Furthermore, he makes the traditional script (not completely faithful, but very close) very understandable. Even the novice will be able to understand what he is saying after the rhythym of the piece is understood. To me, this means Gibson understands the role. When Shakespeare is not understood by the audience, it is somebody on the production side that does not get the role.

I understand why critics don't like this Hamlet, but in my opinion it is the most accurate version yet on film.

If you know someone you wish to initiate into the Shakespeare circle, view this film with them.

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed.

The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Imagine this film done by Ridley Scott........2007-05-11

I remember first time I watched this film in movie theatre when it was released to the first theatrical events, I left the room really disappointed. I felt that Floyd had lost one great opportunity of creating a masterpiece of images and music. By that time we all were still under the impact of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album a real masterpiece and there was a great expectation about the film, but I have to confess, I had an insight that it wasn't to happen and why I affirm this, because one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life was my decision of watching the worst film of all times, a film called "Fame" or "Infamous if you like", and guess who was the director of this ridiculous film, yes Alan Parker, so I couldn't expect nothing better from this guy really. Can you all remember good films this guy has been done? Well, no, so do I! It was really a disaster this choice, but how we cannot change what happened, I only can give three stars for the few really good moments this film has, like that of "Goodbye blue sky" and I'm sure this great moments is much more because of the music than the image itself, no, one thing we have to say and recognize "the work of Gerald Scarfe is a real work of genius" he was with Pink Floyd since the creation of the fantastic "The Wall" artwork. Can you all imagine if this film had been done by Ridley Scott with the help of Gerald Scarfe, wow, simply no comments... It would have been a truly masterpiece!

3 out of 5 stars A one hour thirty minute music video.......2007-04-03

And not a great one, by any measure. While I'm sure the Pink Floyd fan boys will slobber all over this and proclaim its genius, the truth is that it's really pretty boring. Random trivial war images, check. Random trivial teen angst and rebellion images, check. Random trivial drug lifestyle images, check. Random trivial imagery of fascist oppression. Hooray! It's paint by numbers anti-establishment. FIGHT THE INSTITUTION! I guess this explains why Pink Floyd zealots have a long standing reputation of excessive drug use, you'd have to be toasted in order to find brilliance here. No dialogue and a non-linear story line makes it so the film is really nothing but a long music video, which like most videos depends on symbolic imagery, and we learn that film isn't Roger Water's medium. Instead of four or five music videos (which is how it would probably be done today) from a solid album, they made one huge video from a concept album. Actually a great idea and quite progressive for the time. But it's still boring. I guess if I'm pressed to say something truly positive about the film, it set a strong precedent that music videos have the potential, as a medium, to do something very special, above and beyond what the song itself could do. That music videos can be something more than just performance/concert videos. Of course, it just showed the potential, it didn't actualize that potential.

Usually, with any criticism of Pink Floyd, you can expect the usual diatribes from the fan base about how you just don't get it, it's over your head, beyond your grasp, blah blah blah, but the sad truth is, there's just nothing here. It's just plain boring.

There's nothing. Well, except maybe we learn that someone in Pink Floyd has serious mommy issues. And even as the film bores you to tears, the music really is fantastic. In fact the music is so great it really does illustrates how they tried so hard, and fell so far short with the film. Buy the album, forget the film! The music alone salvages three stars for this, the album itself rates much higher.

And really, the flower scene? Just lame.

4 out of 5 stars One Stunning Movie1.......2007-03-22

Pink Floyd's the Wall is not your typical rock concert like Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar, but is an allegorical story about a rock star who is descending into madness. Each bad event in his life helps to add another "brick" into the wall of insanity that he, Pink, is building around himself to shut out the real world. While Pink is fictional, he embodies in part the story of real-life Pink Floyd member Sid Barrett whose LSD induced behavior ultimately got him removed from the band and elements of the way Roger Waters was was beginning to feel after touring for a long while which led to his writing The Wall.

At turns grim, weird, bloody, violent, a bit sexy, and even a little bit funny, this movie is very compelling to watch even though it's not as easy to understand (for instance, the marching hammers). Yet, the lyrics of the accompanying Pink Floyd music helps to hold everything together so that the sum of the parts is much greater than the individual parts of this movie. I only gave it four stars instead of five because of the letterbox format that cuts away half of the screen if youhave a small TV set. If you had a huge projection screen it would be a different matter. While DVD offers more features, if you want to see the picture in all of its glory, then until a full screen version comes out (if there isn't one already) it's best to get the VHS version.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.....Takes me back to childhood.......2007-02-15

I was born in the early 70's so I became familiar with Pink Floyd music before ever seeing this movie. I had listened to all my dad's Pink Floyd records secretly while he was at work because he'd never let us listen to them with all the graphic language and adult themes. Then one day my step-brother said there was a Pink Floyd movie called "The Wall" and we got a copy of it to watch. What a great thrill that was!

I own the special edition DVD and it gives me great pleasure to watch this movie on my 62" flatscreen tv with surround sound.

You might not get a thrill from the sight of Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando throwing popcorn into each other's mouths, but that didn't stop this movie from gaining a new lease on life thanks to cable television and home video. It's a quirky romantic comedy about a mental patient (Johnny Depp) who claims to be Don Juan, the world's greatest lover, and he gets quite a few women to believe it's true. Brando plays the psychiatrist who tries to analyze his patient's apparent delusion, and Dunaway plays Brando's wife, who wants to inject some Don Juan-ish romance into their marital routine. Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, the movie gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Johnny and Marlon together!.......2007-06-11

Any movie that has these two great actors in it is a must-see. Johnny Depp plays what is his sexiest and most romantic and charismatic role. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Should have won the Academy Award.......2007-06-04

A rare combination of superb acting by nearly every member of the cast from cameo to lead,
superbly crafted scenes, editing and direction. A story of life, love and the pursuit of incurable
romantic optimism that can teach us not to take ourselves so seriously.
    Enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Film.......2007-05-18

Don Juan Demarco certainly is not one of Johnny Depp's better roles but I cannot think of anyone who could have played his mental patient who believes he is (and actually is) the world's greatest lover. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around the overwhelming romantic effect Don Juan Demarco has just simply being around women and on his doctor (Jack Mickler played by Marlon Brando). As Don Juan relates his fantasy-like life and romantic awakening he influences his doctor to romance his wife, played by Faye Dunaway. It may be a bit of a stretch to see Marlon Brando as romantic at a weight of 300 plus pounds but there is a playful chemistry between Dunaway and Brando that is charming. The story of Don Juan's life is fantastic, including his duel with the father of the woman he has fallen in love with, being sold into slavery to a Sultana and living in a harem surrounded by women. What tension there is in the film centers on if Don Juan will be committed or released before his 10 days of observation lapse. In this, Dr. Mickler is certain that he will be released but faces opposition from all of the other staff doctors who would prefer to see Don Juan on medication.

The supporting cast turns in fine performances and includes Rachel Ticotin as Don Juan's mother. Overall this is a feel-good and entertaining film with some very good performances, and for that reason I am giving it 5 stars. I saw part of the movie on a cable channel and became caught up in the story enough to want to have a copy.

4 out of 5 stars Don Juan DeMarco.......2007-03-29

What can I say - Johnny Depp once again proves what a fantastic actor he is.

    4 out of 5 stars Good show.......2007-03-26

Even though i think Johnny Deppp is attractive, i won't launch into a swooning ramble of him, much to the relief of many, i suppose!
A very magical movie with no sense of reality whatsoever. I would say the plot is so fantastic, its only a step down from harry potter. Romance and fantasy mix well, so casanova and romance fans will be much impressed by this film.

At last--a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. Psycho gets the masterpiece treatment it deserves on DVD, with extras including newsreel footage surrounding the making and release of the movie; an archive of production stills; the special trailer in which Hitchcock (acting as one of the original Universal Studio tour guides) himself leads viewers around the Bates place; credit designer Saul Bass's original "shower scene" story boards; posters and advertising materials for the movie's William Castle-like publicity campaign (No One Will Be Seated After the Feature Begins!); and a 90-minute documentary on the making of the film! What more could any movie fan possibly want? --Jim Emerson

    5 out of 5 stars Psycho.......2007-06-28

Made at the peak of his career in 1960, "Psycho" was suspense master Hitchcock's last and most famous black-and-white picture--and a film that inaugurated the sub-genre of slasher movie. By the standards of today's gore-fests, it's a fairly restrained murder mystery, but disturbing nonetheless, achieving its chills more by what is withheld than shown. Hitchcock knows just how to heighten our dread of who or what might be at the top of the stairs, or beyond that shower curtain. The terrifying "Psycho" stands above most any psychological thriller made since.

3 out of 5 stars Still Waiting For Anamorphic Widescreen!.......2007-06-13

Attention widescreen t.v. owners: this dvd is not in anamorphic widescreen(enhanced for 16 x 9). A couple of years ago "Psycho" was re-released on dvd in the Alfred Hitchcock collection. It is in anamorphic widescreen. Since then Universal has been SLOWLY releasing titles from the collection in anamorphic for the first time. Well when do we get "Psycho"???!!! I'd love to add this film to my collection, but will not do it until it is properly presented for widescreen t.v.

I love the horror films from the 20's,30's 40's and the HAMMERS
but again thank you movie Psycho for the breath of fresh air.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU ALFRED!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

This movie is not R rated it should be PG like Vertigo. The shower scene is one of the most famous scenes in history and my favorite charactor is "mother" because you dont see her till the end.
My favorite part is when the detective gets stabbed and falls down the stairs.
I love the music that plays in the shower scene because the strings are so high pitched it sounds like screaming.
When I get older I want to make a Psycho of my own.
