The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins, Casino Royale offers a new Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanizing performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless, and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it), and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his "armor" and falls in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the money.

For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Astin-Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?" There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M, who one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy." But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, now I know what I've been faking all these years. --Donald Liebenson

Bond on Set: Filming Casino Royale Book

Product Description

Casino Royale introduces James Bond before he holds his license to kill. But Bond is no less dangerous, and with two professional assassinations in quick succession, he is elevated to "00" status. "M" (Judi Dench), head of the British Secret Service, sends the newly-promoted 007 on his first mission that takes him to Madagascar, the Bahamas and eventually leads him to Montenegro to face Le Chiffre, a ruthless financier under threat from his terrorist clientele, who is attempting to restore his funds in a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale. "M" places Bond under the watchful eye of the Treasury official Vesper Lynd. At first skeptical of what value Vesper can provide, Bond's interest in her deepens as they brave danger together. Le Chiffre's cunning and cruelty come to bear on them both in a way Bond could never imagine, and he learns his most important lesson: Trust no one.

4 out of 5 stars An Edgier Bond Than We've Never Seen.......2007-07-04

It took me a while to actually sit down and watch CASINO ROYALE, but I finally got the chance to see it. Now, I wish I would have saw it in the movie theater and I would have gotten a better effect. This one, I would have to say ranks up there as one of the best BOND films. Just love OCTOPUSSY and THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.

Daniel Craig shines as the new 007. He's edgier and charasmatic. This Bond is pretty good. After hearing that he will be in the upcoming new BOND film (that will be directed by Marc Forster), I think it's safe to say that people are going to slowly embrace Daniel as the new Bond and CASINO was a great jumping off point. He carries this film with ease and it's fun everytime that he is on the screen.

My only trouble with this film was the female lead, Vesper Lynd (played by Eva Green). She's beautiful and all, but I felt that she wasn't a strong choice as a Bond heroine and not to mention there's another female character that looks just like her in this film and there was no uniqueness about each woman. The acting was one dimensional for me. But, then again, this is mostly an action film and he delivered on the action. It is definitely an edge of your seat type thriller.

Overall, this film is great - there are some parts of it storyline wise that I wish were stronger, but it still delivers on all levels.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the basics.......2007-07-03

While Pierce Brosnan is still one of my favorite 007s, there's no doubt that each of his portrayals of Ian Flemming's legend was unfairly hindered by progressively more idiotic and inferior production and scripting. Fortunately, someone at EON Productions woke up and realized that they were running the James Bond franchise into the ground faster than the new Aston Martin DBS, and taking note of the recent success of THE BOURNE IDENTITY and BATMAN BEGINS, dialed back the stupidity (Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist) and pumped up the adrenaline (Daniel Craig as 007).

Those who enjoy the slapstick, tongue-in-cheek Roger Moore Bond pictures will no doubtedly find CASINO ROYALE to be a major shock to their system. It's more violent, it's grittier, and Q and Miss Moneypenny are nowhere to be seen. There are no invisible cars, nor are there satellite superweapons. The villain isn't bent on world domination, but merely saving his own hide after he makes a mistake with a lot of his clients' money. And Bond isn't a debonair Navy commander, but instead a former SAS commando, hardened and in need of polish. In this sense, ROYALE isn't faithful to what 007 has become, but is (relatively) closer to what it should have been.

As a film, ROYALE is extremely similar to director Martin Campbell's previous outing in the world of 007, GOLDENEYE: about 20 minutes too long, and chock full of incredible stunts and physical pyrotechnics. Like GOLDENEYE, CASINO ROYALE starts strong and rocks right through the second act only to lull as it enters its third act before going nuclear for a hugely violent finale. Though written by the same duo that gave us the lackluster THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and the mediocre DIE ANOTHER DAY, ROYALE is a much better film in writing quality, a fact that can probably be credited to the fact that the writers are working more closely off of Flemming's original story and characters rather than simply trying to top the last film with "bigger, better, louder" villains and action (the polishing rewrite from Paul Haggis probably didn't hurt either). While some of the dialogue is still a little flat, the majority of it is sharp, with some conversations being downright superb.

Also superb is Craig, whose casting caused an internet uproar. Still, anyone still thinking "CraigNotBond" is an idiot, as he dispenses with one-liners and gives 007 back his balls. This man is a killer, a soldier, who must evolve into the sophisticated 007, and his angry evolution is what makes ROYALE the joy that it is. It doesn't hurt that the rest of the cast is fantastic. Also fantastic is David Arnold's score, which for the first time since TOMORROW NEVER DIES doesn't just sound like it's going through the motions to collect a paycheck. New themes, careful placement of light motifs, it all comes together perfectly.

The opening titles may suck, but like BATMAN BEGINS, CASINO ROYALE treats its material with the utmost respect and as a result ends up being a film worthy of respect. These are great characters, and it's wonderful to see them finally done justice. And Campbell's physical direction hasn't lost one bit of its edge, as the stunts and action set pieces here are easily among the best in the entire series. ROYALE works because of an attention to the right details, proof that in making great movies, if you look after the pennies, the dollars take care of themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Crackling Good Bond Flick.......2007-07-03

The James Bond spy film franchise is reborn with this movie. Lets you forget all those awful Bond films with Roger Moore. Not just a first rate acting performance by the new Bond but a much better and more credible story line. Truly a worthy successor to the Shawn Connery classic Bond movies. Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The best Bond movie, bar none.......2007-07-01

Having seen all Bond movies several times and formerly thinking that Sean Connery's Bond portrayal would never be bested I now realise that I was completely wrong. Daniel Craig portrays Bond as the author wanted, and the film itself was a full (long, but not too long) experience for Bond fans and now-fans alike.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of the top Bond films.......2007-07-01

The quality of the sound of the dvd is not very good. You have to strain to hear what the characters are saying. That said, this is definitely not a top Bond film. Disjointed and trite. The Bond portrayed is not the suave, debonair figure we have come to love.

I am sorry I spent money on it.

Freely adapted from Robert Ludlum's 1980 bestseller, The Bourne Identity starts fast and never slows down. The twisting plot revs up in Zurich, where amnesiac CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), with no memory of his name, profession, or recent activities, recruits a penniless German traveler (Run Lola Run's Franka Potente) to assist in solving the puzzle of his missing identity. While his CIA superior (Chris Cooper) dispatches assassins to kill Bourne and thus cover up his failed mission, Bourne exercises his lethal training to leave a trail of bodies from Switzerland to Paris. Director Doug Liman (Go) infuses Ludlum's intricate plotting with a maverick's eye for character detail, matching breathtaking action with the humorous, thrill-seeking chemistry of Damon and Potente. Previously made as a 1988 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain, The Bourne Identity benefits from the sharp talent of rising stars, offering intelligent, crowd-pleasing excitement from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Bourne Identity - A Truely Awesome Movie!.......2007-06-14

Hip, clever, well written/acted/filmed/directed! A visual feast from start to finish! Matt Damon is Jason Bourne! A must own for all action fans! A truely awesome movie!

5 out of 5 stars Bourne Identity.......2007-06-11

Great fast-paced action, lots of special racing scenes. Great, but simple plot which is vastly improved by Matt Damon's acting. I would recommend this movie to anyone's DVD library.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on who made this.......2007-06-10

This is a great movie but whoever made the dvd really messed up the captions. The extended version has no captions and the other it is more subtitles and difficult to turn on. If the extended has no captions someone tell me the point of buying this dvd?

5 out of 5 stars Action packed and re-watchable! .......2007-05-26

I don't know about this extended version, I saw the movie in the theater and then on pay per view several times. Great suspense, excellent fight scened, Matt Damon at his, in my opinion, best. Great editing and direction, this movie does not slow down and is one of my all time favorite action suspense flicks.

3 out of 5 stars Though not a masterpiece, a movie worth watching.......2007-05-20

The Bourne Identity brings to the screen the story of a young man dragged out of the Mediterranean Sea and without a clue as to who he is. His only lead is a bank account in Zurich. His problems, however, have only just begun...
Matt Damon is amazing in his respective role though the rest of the cast fail to follow with the exception of lovely Julia Stiles who seems to have quite a bit of potential.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good, but nothing extraordinary.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray Heaven.......2007-06-30

I must sympathize with the makers of this movie as it must be one of the hardest BD titles to sell. Don't get me wrong it is reference quality in video and audio but with Sony's marketing ploy of giving this title away with every sale of a PS3, really the market has been saturated with freebies. I know a lot of people have received 2 or even 3 free copies of this BD movie and they are themselves giving their free copies away on forums.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bond I've Seen.......2007-06-23

I've seen it about 5 times now (2 in theaters, 3 at home) and I still get into it. The quality of this film on Blu-ray is spectacular and I'm continually impressed. I'd suggest that everyone watch it at least once, even if you're not a fan of the 007 series

3 out of 5 stars Good movie, if your not a bond fan.......2007-06-14

I was very dissapointed when I saw this movie. Not because it is a bad movie it is actually a really well made movie, but because it isn't a good James Bond movie. It doesn't contain the witty dialect and sexual tension that we have come to expect and love from 007. And Craig, although attractive, doesn't posses the Bond charm or larger than life quality. So if your looking for a good shoot em' up movie this is a great movie for you, if you want "Bond, James Bond" go for the classics.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bond Flick!? Definitely best Bond in Audio-Video!.......2007-06-03

I don't know why but Bond films always are very entertaining to me, even several times around. The storyline here is great, following the original by Ian Fleming story well (unlike the funny spoof from a long time ago that is also well worth watching). And Daniel Craig is a near-perfect 007 for this "first Bond film" (could perhaps be "elevated"). Eva Green is luscious and the rest of the cast (miss "Q"!) is superb...interesting to see Giancarlo Giannini (see Lina Wertmuller films)! Even if you don't like Bond films in general and feel like some action or a storyline with twists, this is simply a classic to watch. The audio and video quality is excellent as well, showing off Blu-ray HD...if your audio system actually goes down to the bottom in sub-bass (e.g., see Buttkicker), you'll also get extra enjoyment. BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars Casino Royale sets a new standard for modern Bond films.......2007-05-26

Casino Royale raises the bar for modern Bond films. I must admit, I was a bit disturbed upon hearing Daniel Craig would play the role of Bond. He was blonde (we had never had a blonde bond before) and didn't really seem to fit the part based on previous works of his that I had seen. Now after seeing the film, I can safely say he was a great choice and my fears were not necessary. The film is full of great characters, exotic locations, and everything else that makes a true 007 film.
Buying this film on Blu-ray should be a no-brainer considering you have a Blu-ray player. Myself, I have a Playstation 3 console which according to reviews on the internet and in magazines is the best Blu-ray player on the market. It played Casino Royale beautifully on my HDTV in 720p and 1080i. The scenes are full of detail, I even paused the movie on a scene that had a large crowd. You could make out all of the faces and every detail about them. You can't see that kind of detail on DVD! Bond fans must buy this!

5 out of 5 stars Enduring story.......2007-06-15

The Anne of Green Gables series made for TV is still as fresh and enchanting as ever. The casting in this particular series is superb. The story protrays a more innocent era but the emotions and relationships among the characters still ring true today. I highly recommend it for personal and family enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome.......2007-06-08

all three of these movies are superb! great for kids and adults, however the third movie isn't really for small kids, as there are some pretty graphic war scenes and heavy plot.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2007-06-02

Nothing like watching your favorite movies in the world... only to pop in the last DVD and see they gave you the wrong one...
I received the wrong dvd as the last one... so couldn't find out what in the world happens by way of watching it.
And I couldn't return it.... so I'll suggest you may see if you can find other buyers to get this product form so the same doesn't happen to you.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! .......2007-05-30

I absolutely love having all three on DVD. I can't tell you how many times I've watched my videos-Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea it was called then. The box is near shredded I've had it for so long...it's been loved. Now to have these movies restored and neat extra features like making of the movie is great!
I've never been a big fan of the 3rd, mainly because I loved the relationship between Marilla and Anne, and was saddened by her death. Also the third version is so much later in Megan Followes life-where she is much older playing someone younger, doesn't work that great. But I still love the first 2! I can't wait to share with my kids when I have them, these DVD's will last for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-05-19

I've owned the VHS copies for years; but they've lost quality. Now I have the films safely on DVD, and I can enjoy the wondrful extra features!

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college.

Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

5 out of 5 stars a must for every girl, young or old...........2007-07-04

I'll tell ya, I don't think that there's a girl alive who can't find some way to relate to Anne Shirley. I recall watching this on WonderWorks as a little girl, and absolutely loved it (and the Anne of Avonlee episodes, which I don't yet own). At one point I had them all on VHS that we'd recorded, but I believe one of my sisters took them when they left home, and I only just got around to buying myself a copy on DVD. And I'm so glad I did, because now I'm sharing my love of this story with MY 9 year old daughter. How special it is to be able to share something one loved as a little girl, with a little girl of one's own, and each able to relate to the story.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a daughter--she NEEDS this DVD!.......2007-06-13

I grew up watching this movie, and read all of L.M. Montgomery's books, and now as an adult I wonder, "What happened to stuff like Anne of Green Gables?" Kids these days, especially girls, don't seem to have any wholesome entertainment that doesn't focus on becoming rich and famous or having the perfect body. If you have a daughter, or a niece, or you yourself just want a nice wholesome movie for a change... buy this movie, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-06-12

I watched this when I was little. Very nice, clean movie that keeps you very involved with the characters. Would recommend!

5 out of 5 stars The Cutest of Movies.......2007-06-10

This movie is so wonderful I love the characters they picked to play each of the characters. This is the best movie out of the trilogy the sequel being the second best because both follow the book. This movie had all of my family in tears at certain points and Gilbert Blithe was a definite favorite for us. The scenery is breathtaking and the way the love story plays out is very cute. I would highly recommend this movie as it is a very enrapturing movie filled with the simple, beautiful things in life. And how Anne " with an E " touches the hearts of so many people is so beautiful. It made me want to move to Prince Edward Island tomorrow to live somewhere like Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables has become one of my favorite movies as it sings to the heart of the hopeless romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2007-06-07

This is one of the best adaptations I have ever seen. Sullivan does a great job of bring Avonlea to the screen and making smart choices about what needs to be changed while remaining true to the world Montgomery created.

The casting is perfect - major and minor characters alike are extremely talented. It's amazing to see how Megan Follows plays a 13 year old and a 16 year old, sometimes days apart, and is believable every time. Richard Farnesworth and Colleen Dewherst are magic.

The bonus features are also great - giving you the impression that getting this adaptation so perfect was more luck than craft on Sullivan's part (a perspective proven later when he destroys this "trilogy" with the joke that is The Continuing Story"), but provides an interesting commentary and details fans will really enjoy.

Everything about this film - the cast, the script, locations, costumes - works together. This is the Avonlea Anne fans have long loved.

A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer

Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)

4 out of 5 stars THE DREAMERS.......2007-07-01

Its tempting to try selling this film as the debut performance by the newest Bond girl Eva Green.

As an alternate, see my review, as well as this Amazon review by Bret Fetzer below mine.

Many would attempt judging this film as kinky with a sprinkling of frontal nudity and a menage a' trois scene thrown in (the NC-17) version. However, this Bernardo Bertolucci film would rather like to remembered as a love letter to the movies and to the average Parisian's intense love for good films. Using a backdrop of the 1968 student riots brought about by the firing of the director at the Cinematheque Francais - a temple for students and afficionados of art films, the story weaves into it the coming-of-age story of a bother-sister par and a young exchange student from America living together duing the heady days, and their evolving relationship.

4 out of 5 stars House of 'Yes' in the War Zone or The First Tango in Paris.......2007-04-26

When Bernardo Bertolucci makes a new film, I want to see it. I know it will be visually beautiful, deep and meaningful. Even when he is not completely successful - his films are difficult to forget. It applies to "The Dreamers" (2003)

In this film, Bertolucci returns to Paris of 1968. His First Tango is as shocking as Last one - it received NC-17 rating for very open scenes of nudity, masturbation, sex, and the hints to incest. But it is not just about sex - it is about film itself. It was the time when Pauline Kael said, "Bertolucci and Brando have altered the face of an art form". It was the time when a crowd in Chicago would line up under umbrellas on the sidewalk, waiting in the rain to get into the next screening of Godard's "Weekend." It was the time when movie makers became the Artists. It was the time when closing down of the famous Cinematheque Francais in Paris by the government started the student culture riots which became the part of youthful rebellion all over the Western World.

Young American, Mathew, a devoted movie buff (Michael Pitt who by the opinion of several reviewers looks like cross between Leo DiCaprio and Macaulay Culkin. I found him looking more like young Roger Ebert would've. ) becomes friends with two French students and fellow movie lovers, twins Isabella (Eva Green, in a star making debut) and Theo (Louis Garrel) and accepts their invitation to stay with them at their apartment while their intellectual parents are away for vacation.

All three are big fans of movies - they not only talk about movies, they live their favorite scenes. "The Dreamers" is Bertolucci's love letter to cinema, and his irony toward people taking it so seriously that the real world is ignored.

When Matthew moves in with the twins, the result closely resembles "Last Tango in Paris". Much of the film's second half occurs in that apartment, as insular as Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider's more than thirty years ago. Flirting becomes passion becomes dark and dangerous games to see how far someone will go. The difference is that the kids of "The Dreamers" are not as complicated and interesting as Paul or Jeanne (especially Paul, one of the greatest performances by genius Brando).

With this wistful ode to sex, cinema, and the heated atmosphere of the '60s, Bertolucci has proved that he is still on the top of his game. I will be happily waiting for his next film.

This video is the sequel to the beloved children's book and video Anne of Green Gables. It continues the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong young orphan in 1890s Canada, whose hot temper matches her red hair. Anne of Green Gables told of Anne's adoption by an elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew Cuthbert, and her childhood adventures in the idyllic village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Anne of Avonlea takes up the story soon after Matthew's death, when Anne has graduated from college. It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland. Girls seven and older, as well as adults, will enjoy this intelligent and beautifully made film, first shown on PBS. It's filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters--including self-reliance, generosity, and perseverance. It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human. Anne's struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students are both thought provoking and entertaining. Girls will also enjoy Anne's romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower. The film is beautifully filmed, and the costumes and settings portray an idyllic time and place. The cast is excellent. Megan Follows as the spirited Anne and Dewhurst as the gruff but tender Marilla give especially fine performances. --Elisabeth Keating

4 out of 5 stars not as good as the first.......2007-06-01

not nearly as good as the first, but still quality family entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST all time movies.......2007-05-26

What a wonderful and sweet show. It's rare that you find a movie with substance and heart. At the end of the show, you just sit back and feel satisfied and enriched by the whole beauty of the characters. A must see for anyone wanting to feel happy and encouraged.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-18

Megan Follows is great as Anne and continues to do so in this sequel to the first one. Exciting and full of warmth and love.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and sweet and so entertaining.......2007-05-18

I'm a HUGE LM Montgomery fan. I have read every single book of hers and I even travelled to Prince Edward Island last year on a vacation. Seriously a huge fan. And this film adaptation while not being exact is seriously as good as it gets. Megan Follows is AMAZING and I just love the entire supporting cast. I can't watch this without tearing up! Everything is just as it should be...they really did capture the heart and soul of PEI that Montgomery was always trying to convey and ANNE is brought to life on the screen.

You will love this and so will your kids.

4 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2007-05-16

Great film! Continuing the growing up of Anne was a wonderful experience, just about on par with Anne of Green Gables (first installment) a series of movies I've watched many times over the years. I'm happy to say I now have all three on DVD's in my collection. Great acting, actors and story line. I recommend it to friends and family whenever the subject of favorite movies come up. I recommend it highly to one and all. The third DVD (The Continuing Story) is good too. I recommend buying all three DVD's separately rather than in the boxed set. The boxed set sometimes has the wrong DVD instead of the 3rd installment.

Charlton Heston seemed fond of starring in apocalyptic science-fiction films in the late 1960s and early '70s. There was Planet of the Apes, of course, and The Omega Man. But there was also 1973's Soylent Green, a strange detective film (based on Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room!) set in 2022 and starring Heston as a Manhattan cop trying to solve a murder in the overpopulated, overheated city. His roommate (a necessity in the overcrowded metropolis), played by Edward G. Robinson, tries telling him about a better time on Earth before there were no more resources or room left; but Heston doesn't care. Directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings), the film has a curious but largely successful mix of mystery and bleak futuristic vision, somewhat like Blade Runner but without the extraordinary art direction. This was Robinson's last film and he's easily the best thing about it; his final scene seems terribly appropriate in retrospect. Joseph Cotten makes an appearance as the man whose murder results in the revelation of a shocking secret. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars now I remember.......2007-06-27

Hadn't seen this movie for decades. Hasn't been on TV anywhere so I bought it. Now I know why. Simple plot, little or no SPX and just plain boring all around.
Oh well, they can't all be winners....

4 out of 5 stars Environmental degradation, extreme poverty in 2022. No way right? .......2007-06-11

I saw this in the now defunct Northland theater in Southfield Michigan. The theater had only 1 screen. And it didn't change films every other week like they do now(Funny girl was shown here as the only feature for over a year!). But hey I digress. Released in 1973, Soylent Green's future shows global warming reeking havoc, extreme poverty, corporations running things, extreme food shortages, energy shortages and overpopulation. Pretty prophetic I'd say. As for the food shortages Soylent Corporation comes to the rescue with their Soylent food- tasteless food squares in different colors that look a lot like the low fat snacks that my wife buys.

Charlton Heston is fantastic as NYC Detective Thorn who is investigating the murder of a rich but troubled man (played by Joseph Cotton). He is troubled because he knows the secret of the powerful Soylent Corporation. Because of NYC overcrowding and poverty(40 mil and counting) Detective Thorn is overburdened and underpaid so the police of the future have no qualms about helping themselves to a deadman's belongings, including his live in prostitute (how cool is that). It appears that between 1973 and 2022 they did not seem to make any new cars, firearms or trash trucks which are sometimes used for the secondary purpose of scooping up disorderly citizens. The movie does not have the production values and special effects of a futuristic movie like Bladerunner but these are minor points of contention for an otherwise fine film. This DVD is shown in widescreen and for the true fan it has a commentary track with actress Leigh Taylor-Young and Director Richard Fleisher giving interesting behind the scenes info.

Edward G. Robinson is excellent as Sol, Thorn's assisant or 'book' as he is referred to. This was Robinson's 101st and last film. In a memorable and famous scene with Heston, Sol decides to end his life after finding out the horrible secret of Soylent Greens origin. Unfortunately Robinson passed away shortly after this film was released. This DVD should be in every sci-fi fans library.

5 out of 5 stars A smart, powerful, and still timely cautionary tale.......2007-06-06

Like most people, I knew the shocking secret of the film long before actually watching it. But I was truly surprised to discover what a strong film it remains to this day, presenting a grim but convincing picture of a world in rapid decline, both materially & culturally. Even better, it credits the audience with intelligence & lets us put the pieces together as we watch, rather than hitting us over the head with speeches & statistics.

Are the minimal effects & overall design dated? Of course -- but that's totally beside the point. Ideas are what matter here, not gloss. True science-fiction isn't about prediction, it's about speculation: what if? And it's often commentary on & criticism of the present. This film is a perfect case in point. If the details haven't aged well, the essence remains as searingly potent as ever.

What strikes me is the restrained, casual tone of the picture, presenting a corrupt & apathetic world so matter-of-factly. Our coarsened hero Thorn (an excellent Charlton Heston) is so obviously a product of that world, shaped by its anomie & mounting despair. Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson in a heartfelt final appearance) is the dwindling counterpoint, no more than a living memory of a better, cleaner world that Thorn can't even begin to imagine. And Leigh Taylor-Young's Shirl is a tragic figure, sensitive but wearily accepting of her role in a society that has no place or pity for her humane spirit.

The background is filled with throwaway lines that almost slide by without calling attention to themselves: asking a bodyguard if he can read or write, thus establishing the collapse of literacy; marveling at something as common to us as a glass of ice, indicating its scarcity; succumbing to the temptation of a rare hot shower, rather than sex or money. A sickening yellow-green pall fills the screen in all outdoor scenes; a palpable weariness & desperation covers everyone like a thickening layer of dust. The viewer feels as grimy & sweaty & unwashed as any of the characters. In some ways, it's a brutally realistic version of "Idiocracy" long before that satiric film.

Most telling is the transformation of human beings into disposable commodities by the corporate masters of the world. From young women called "furniture," to the literal scooping up of hungry rioters, to the secret of Soylent Green itself, the mass of humanity exists to be used, traded, bought & sold to satisfy the greed of a handful of the rich & powerful. Which doesn't seem all that far-fetched these days ...

When we get to the final scenes with Sol, dying before screen images of the green earth he knew as a child, it's as jolting to the viewer as it is to a stunned Thorn, who finally realizes just how much both humanity & the world have lost. And the age of the film is actually a reminder that the greenhouse effect & global warming were well-known over 30 years ago, only to be ignored & disregarded since that time in favor of corporate interests. Dated? Not in this regard!

All in all, it's the sort of film that probably wouldn't get made today, not unless it was packed with CGI effects, massive explosions, a larger body count, and a lot less intelligence. But if you're ready for a thought-provoking story, you won't do much better than this fine science-fiction film. And the commentary by director Richard Fleischer & Leigh Taylor-Young is informative & articulate, adding to the experience. Most highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Heston discovers a REALLY inconvenient truth.......2007-06-03

In an overcrowded, overheated world where nature is dying, a cop (Charlton Heston) investigates the assassination of an executive (Joseph Cotton) of the company that manufactures most of the world's food supply, learning a terrible secret in the process. Although the look of this 70s SF movie is dated (please tell me that the scarf Heston wears throughout the film won't come back into style), its story is more relevant than ever. This is a world where global warming has gone unchecked and the most powerful nation in the world has been reduced to third world poverty. One can only imagine how bad it is elsewhere.

I'm usually not a big fan of remakes, but this film would be a good candidate for an update. Not only is the message appropriate for today's audience, but just imagine what they could do now with the food riot scenes and the machines that scoop up the rioters with huge shovels. Heston bellows one of his most memorable lines ever in this one: "Soylent Green is ------!" ranks right up there with "Keep your hands off me, you damn, dirty ape!"

I will be willing to send you any details that help other customers. But I have not received the movie yet. According to Amazon prediction of approximate delivery, the item should be arriving today, May 15, at the latest. Unless this occurs in the afternoon today, this did not happen. I understand that there may be some delay, due to the international delivery process, so I expect to get it in the next few days. especially because whatever I have bought from Amazon in the past has always arrived to my door without any problem.
