    Description

Outnumbered, outgunned and beleaguered on all sides, the German tank forces of the Second World War fought valiantly to the very last. Always too few in numbers, even the superior technology of the Tiger and Panther tanks proved insufficient to defeat the hordes of Shermans and T-34Os, which swamped the Panzer Corps by 1945. Featuring rare archive footage, stunning 3-D computer graphics and rare film of the last surviving Tigers, this is a privileged glimpse into the world of Hitler's tank armies.

    Description

Caesar had his Pretorian Guard, and Napoleon, the Old Guard. Hitler's equivalent was the Leibstandarte, which grew from a small hand picked battalion, to a complete Panzer Division twenty thousand strong. Naturally, the Leibstandarte received the best and most modern equipment, but they needed it. As the situation deteriorated, the division became a mobile fire brigade, deployed wherever the fighting was fiercest in Russia and France. Even the end of the war brought no respite, as the survivors marched into captivity from which few returned.

5 out of 5 stars Very good. It covers all aspects of the powerful Leibstandarte .......2007-01-31

This documentary starts with the creation of the Leibstandarte as a personal guard of Hitler and goes through its evolution to a full panzer division in the late years of the war. There are references to the personalities of the division (like the infamous commanders "Sepp" Dietrich, Kurt "Panzer" Meyer and Jochen Peiper), the battles it fought, the selection criteria, the bravery of its men but also the crimes committed by some of them in both the Eastern and the Western Fronts. There are many scenes that are really rare, although there are many others commonly seen before and a little bit repeated in this film.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how good this was. The analysis was outstanding and insightful. Another pleasant surprise was how the archive film footage in most cases was appropriate to the time and location that it represented - an unusual event. I bought this one disc as a trial and if the others are as good as this, the investment will be a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars See it Several Times.......2007-02-08

I loved this movie! The plot was pretty simple but the quirkiness made it really keep my interest. Note, for example, the shirts worn by the boy with the plane and Doleman. And what to heck is that on the boy's face? Also, watch Doleman's face during the opening credits. And watch the two "Monday" bank scenes closely. Notice any differences? Why was that scene filmed twice (other than the different character perspectives)? Oh yeah, see if anything strikes you as odd about the rubber arrow on Charles Merchant's face during his infomercial. These and other oddities that aren't tied to the plot make it clear that the director/writers/actors enjoyed making the movie which makes it fun to watch. I'd love to know where it was filmed and how accurate the bank temperature display was! It said 94 in the morning and 112 in the afternoon. Details that seem trivial are rarely in a film by accident so the quirks in this film help make it worth seeing a few times.

2 out of 5 stars It should be better.......2006-06-05

Rachel Leigh Cook looks hot. Alicia Silverstone looks hot. Neither acts well.

Woody Harrelson desecrates his otherwise hilarious comedic record that produced gems like "White Men Can't Jump" and "Kingpin".

John Cleese, oh John Cleese, how could you stoop so low? From Monty Python to this?

With two hotties and two good actors, I really expected much more. Disappointment, oh how you taunt me.

Basically this is a movie about three borderline retarded people who are trying to rob the bank in which they work. Each one has an idiotic plan that is slightly more ingenious than eating paste.

If it weren't for the lesbian scene between Cook and Silverstone, the one that involves every ingredient from the Waffle Housee smothered, covered, diced, and chopped hash browns, it would be unwatchable. Of course, I just imagined that part to make the movie slightly tolerable.

In the end each viewer will eventually feel scorched, as in herpes, and dirty for watching a movie that serves a massive turd in the career punchbowl of all actors involved.

2 out of 5 stars this comedy only goes so far and then it drops........2005-05-12

3 working bank tellers, played by Alicia Silverstone (Excess Baggage, Clueless), Paul Costanzo (Tv's Joey, Road Trip) and Woody Harrelson (Tv's Cheers, She Hate Me), plan on robbing the bank that they work at. The movie begins on the day that the cops show up at the bank and then we rewind the week back into the 3 tellers lives and we see why they want to rob the bank. So, they all do it and when they get back the boss, played by Joshua Leonard (The Blair With Project, Deuces Wild) tells them they've been robbed from the ATM by some punks and then he brings the 3 tellers in his office to give them a promotion but they all deny it and quit. John Cleese (Monty Python member, Rat Race) only had one funny moment in this movie and that's the scene where he's checking his dog for a key and he puts a big sushi knife up to the dog but other then that, Cleese is totally wasted. Rachael Leigh Cook (She's All That, AntiTrust) and Jeffrey Tambor (Hellboy, Tv's Arrested Development) also star. The cast try their best to keep the movie funny interesting but the movie is sub-par and not that interesting when it gets to the final frame. The movie is Scorched, just like the title says.

5 out of 5 stars Most Best movie EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-03-30

I saw in my little hunting lodge in VT and it is a great movie. I laughed really hard at some points.

5 out of 5 stars Not your every day ordinary comedy.......2004-09-15

If you are accustomed to commonplace punch line/situation comedy you will be amazed how casually yet successfully this movie managed to deliver its slings and arrows of outrageous comedic sense to audience.
With a spectacular cast and hilarious development of plots, each carefully crafted next-door character hoans its own idea of personal vendetta while driving towards a seemingly fiascic stage where all gets tangled up in their web of outlandish karma.
With unique arrays of pleasant soundtrack, and bits and pieces of humorous touch, this movie is classic in its own way and certainly refreshing in its comedic entertainment.

While titanic struggles were being played out in Stalingrad, Kursk and Moscow, Army Group North maintained a long drawn out siege in Leningrad. Then in 1944, the front flared into life and a desperate life or death struggle began, as Army Group North began the dangerous retreat back to the borders of the Reich.

If you already have the earlier series, "TANKS! Barbarossa and Kursk" you may want to wait until the price is lower then $15. The movies are around 50 minutes. The army group north, south, and center series are a good way to view the Russian front but I was expecting more. Many of the speakers are used from the TANKS! series and repeated word for word on many an occasion. I would recommend these over the hell on earth scorched earth film of the russian front.

At Kursk, the tank would have a major influence on the eventual outcome of the war. Made with the co-operation of the Bovington Tank Museum, this film features rare action footage of the Panzers, including the famous Tiger Tank, in action and unique footage of the last surviving Panzers to produce a powerful record of the evolution of massed armoured warfare from 1939 to 1943.

The commentaries in this are the same from the TANKS! Kursk and BArbarossa series and repeat themselves in this expanded series, Scorched Earth. This film is basically a quick overview of WWII battles with a few shots of tanks at the Bovington museum. I would recommend the older TANKS! series over this.

This is a fine documentary film about Wehrmacht's heavier artillery pieces. It starts with the K5 railway guns ("Anzio Annie" among them) and continues with all kinds of German artillery from pack howitzers to 170 mm guns, covering also the giant mortars. There are sections about the great sieges of Sevastopol and Leningrad with very good demonstration of the impact of heavy artillery fire on the enemy's fortifications. The experts talking in this film are also very good on their part.

On the Russian Front, there were no rules. No code of honour, decency or humanity. It was a barbaric struggle to the death. It was also the largest, and most brutal war in history. It contained the biggest tank battles ever fought, and recorded the most casualties. Whole armies were swallowed up. Enormous distances boggled the mind and the constantly changing seasons brought either mud and rain, heat and dust, or ice and snow, but misery was always present. Combat on the Russian Front attempts to describe the indescribable. The experience of combat at the sharp end in this most vicious of conflicts.

I liked the TANKS! Kursk and Barbarossa series, but this is almost a repeat with the same word for word dialogue in many instances. I liked the North, South, Center army group films from Scorched Earth series better than this one. Save your money on this one

5 out of 5 stars A colossal struggle to the death.......2007-02-05

The film includes the opinions of experts like Robin Clifton, Bob Carruthers and John Erickson but also dramatic footage from actual battles on the Eastern Front, pictures of the horrific carnage produced and many color war-time posters. It gives special emphasis to the gruesome fate of the millions prisoners caught from both sides and the barbarity of the struggle which from the start had a character of extermination rather than simple conquest. Very good film.
