5 out of 5 stars bible Time Clasics David and Goliath.......2007-05-08

Fast service. Poor Quality DVD but Considering the age of the movies it was well worth the low price.

3 out of 5 stars Movie quality varies.......2007-03-02

The quality of the four movies in this collection vary greatly in quality. I do applaud the attempt to save some of the cinema for future generations and I found these versions of three bibilical stories and one pseudo-biography interesting variations on their stories. You also get the chance to see some young fairly famous stars before they were very famous at all.

The movies included are:

"David and Goliath" starring Orson Welles and Ivo Payer

"Joseph and His Brethren" starring Goeffrey Horne and Robert Morley

"Martin Luther" starring Niall MacGinnis and John Ruddock

"Esther and the King" starring Joan Collins and Richard Egan.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all "His life and Legends".......2002-11-11

We all know the story of King Arthur and the round table through movies books and plays.

Once again biography is excellent at showing what circumstances and people are responsible for the Arthurian legend(s). You realize that not only is there different versions but that versions grew through time as the need arose for a Camelot and different views of the King.

Maybe to keep continuity to the history line, the program is resented more in a series of sound bites, from different authorities as apposed to only one authority at a time telling about the life and legends. Also true to “Biography” there is a spin to the story which glaringly leaves out T. H. White (The Once and Future King) and Marion Zimmer Bradley (The Mists of Avalon).

4 out of 5 stars Good summary of the legend.......2000-04-05

Biography tells the origin of the variations of the story of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. Good for those who know little about him but, as a fan of the legends, i learned nothing new from the video. But it was only 50 minutes of my life and it was worth being told again.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating man!.......2007-06-27

Apart from all those jokes that people made about him fracturing of the English language, he was a determined and very interesting man. Like most of the old Hollywood moguls he liked things done his way, but in spite of that he developed an extraordinary talent for picking the right film to make. He did it big and gave it class and the later MGM followed his lead. I enjoyed watching this disc and I'm sure I'll watch it many times again in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A Unique Look at a Unique Man.......2001-10-12

After watching Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, I was still really in a documentary mood, so I decided to check out Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies, another documentary about someone I was familiar with, but didn't really know a lot about. With Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, the documentary focuses on a man really loved and respected by many people. Throughout the documentary, there are people who talk about the fact that Hank was their hero, their role model. Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies is a little different: almost everyone interviewed about Samuel Goldwyn mentioned at least once the fact they couldn't stand working with the often abusive and caustic Goldwyn.

Loved or hated, Goldwyn was certainly a Hollywood luminary who went to amazing lengths to insure that he had the final word on what went up on the screen. Considered by most to be a phenomenal success, Goldwyn always seemed to be fighting an uphill battle against insurmountable odds. A true film genius who is known for the mantra "make less films, make better films", Goldwyn always seemed to be at war with everything around him, while constantly doing what he could to 'fit in'.

What I really liked about Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies was the deep sense of irony in the story of Samuel Goldwyn and how his triumphs seemed to be worse for him than his tragedies. Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies does a great job of brining together the many people touched by Samuel Goldwyn to present a unique look at one of Hollywood's most interesting moguls.

3 out of 5 stars Just fine, except for two unpardonable errors.......2001-10-11

I caught part of this program when it aired on PBS locally Sunday night, and I caught the rest last night on its second airing. On nearly all counts, it is a fine program, featuring not only clips from all of Goldwyn's famous films (including the long unseen 1959 "Porgy and Bess"), but interviews from many departed screen stars such as Bette Davis, Dana Andrews, and Laurence Olivier, all shown, thankfully, not at the end of their careers and in failing health, but in interviews made as long as twenty years ago. The funniest clip is a display of Olivier's towering acting skills when he imitates Goldwyn's voice as he reacted to Olivier's appearance during the filming of the 1939 "Wuthering Heights", one of the screen's greatest classics. Family members are also interviewed, giving sometimes poignant insights into Goldwyn's relationships with people.

However, this film does feature two howling errors which could easily have been avoided by more careful research. A. Scott Berg, author of the biography on which this documentary is based, is also responsible for the script here, and is featured heavily in interviews, so it is difficult to understand how on earth he could have missed these errors, but during the "Porgy and Bess" segment, we hear the narrator baldly stating that Goldwyn had loved it ever since he had seen it onstage in 1932, and that the 1959 film won three Academy Awards. In fact, "Porgy and Bess" opened on Broadway on October 10, 1935, and the 1959 film won only one Academy Award (for Best Adaptation of Score). In addition, it actually LOST three Academy Awards-- to the year's blockbuster, "Ben-Hur".

I watched this segment twice in two days to make sure my ears were not playing tricks on me, and sure enough, the errors were there. The "American Masters" TV series usually produces completely accurate programs, but this time someone was asleep at the wheel when it came to proofreading the script or doing the research.

3 out of 5 stars Double feature fun for B-Western fans.......2005-12-08

From 1941 to 1946, Buster Crabbe (FLASH GORDON, BUCK ROGERS) starred in a series of ultra-low budget Westerns for that infamous Poverty Row outfit, PRC (Producers Releasing Corporation). During the first three years, Crabbe's character was called "Billy the Kid"; afterwards he was known as "Billy Carson." Regardless of the name, it was always the same tried-and-true formula: Crabbe played a stalwart sagebrush hero who never failed to help anyone in distress. And he was always aided and abetted by his trusty sidekick, Fuzzy Q. Jones (Al St. John).

While the scripts, settings, and supporting casts repeated themselves with alarming regularity, this series was given a considerable boost by the appealing performances of Crabbe and St. John. Though he was never hailed for his acting ability, Buster Crabbe had such a winning screen presence that it didn't matter if he posed no threat to Spencer Tracy or Paul Muni. He was the sort of easygoing, likable Western hero that audiences could easily root for. Al St. John was one of the funniest Western sidekicks in the business; a talented visual comedian (he had appeared in numerous silent comedies with his uncle, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle), Fuzzy could always "pepper up" a routine script with his lively physical clowning. Together, Crabbe and St. John made a solid team, and their combined talents helped them overcome PRC's severe budgetary limitations.

This Buster Crabbe double feature is a bargain for fans of this series. HIS BROTHER'S GHOST is one of the better entries, with St. John playing his usual role of Fuzzy as well as Fuzzy's brother, Andy. When Andy is killed, Fuzzy steps in as the title character to thwart a bandit gang. SHADOWS OF DEATH is an okay entry that, like so many others, is just an excuse to see the duo in action.

Print quality on both titles is only passable. One of these days I'd love to see a good (if not great) copy of one of the Crabbe/St. John Westerns. As it is, fans will appreciate this two-for-one deal. (Non-fans won't rate this disc as highly as I did...then again, non-fans won't be interested in this disc at all.)

2 out of 5 stars Serviceable film transfers of two very average B-Westerns.......2005-09-08

This review is for the Alpha Video issued DVD double feature, "My Brother's Ghost" (47:30 minutes) and "Shadow of Death (59:00 minutes)"

The quality of both film transfers here are just serviceable, but not much more than that. Both suffer from the typical loss of highlights in these old films and have the appearance of an old very worn out VHS - you can watch it o.k., just don't expect great quality from this DVD. The sound is often slightly distorted and muffled sounding at times - But, not so bad that it distracts from the movies - you can still hear everything o.k. and it's not a huge problem. Overall, "My Brother's Ghost" is of somewhat better quality than "Shadows of Death" in terms of both picture quality and sound.

Both movies are just average in terms of B-Westerns, not bad, but not anything great either. "My Brother's Ghost" is definitely the better of the two movies. However, Buster Crabbe is a much better actor than the roles he plays in these particular westerns. Still these movies are fun to watch for what they are - not a bad way to spend a rainy day. They certainly don't make 'em like this anymore!
