This casual comedy stars hip-hop maestros Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, who are also all over the movie's soundtrack. Dee Loc (Dogg) works at a car wash but makes more money selling pot on the side. When his roommate Sean (Dre) gets a job as assistant manager at the wash, Sean finds himself caught between his tyrannical boss (the ever-blustery George Wallace) and his friend. But the plot isn't really the point--The Wash is a loose, ambling collection of off-hand jokes, character portraits, and girls in tight clothes, much in the same vein as Friday or I Got the Hook-Up. Cameos include Shaquille O'Neal, Ludacris, Pauly Shore (as a mob victim tied up in a car trunk), and Eminem. Writer-director DJ Pooh also plays a dimwitted kidnapper and has some of the funniest bits. --Bret Fetzer

A Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize-winner, Quinceañera is a small film with a big heart. The plot unfolds at the leisurely pace of life itself, yet there's not a wasted moment in the script. The story follows the travails of young Magdalena (Emily Rios), a teen in the Mexican-American, but gentrifying, Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park. As Magdalena's 15th birthday approaches, and the festive coming-of-age quinceañera party that accompanies it, life throws her a curve ball in the form of an unexpected--and possibly miraculous--pregnancy. In disgrace, she turns to her elderly uncle Tomas and sometime gangbanger and not-quite-uncloseted gay cousin Carlos. The interactions of these unlikely family members ring completely true, with stellar performances by Dios as well as Chalo González as her warm Tio Tomas and Jesse Garcia as the smoldering Carlos. The portrayal of life in Echo Park is intimate and effortless, as the teens slide interchangeably between Spanish and English; crime and gang activities coexist with trendy gay couples and their fashionable remodels. And in the heart of it all, the family ties among the three lead characters prove unconventional--and unbreakable. The DVD also contains a commentary with the filmmakers and cast members, a Q&A with them, and a "making-of" featurette. --A.T. Hurley

Product Description

As Magdalena's (Emily Rios) 15th birthday approaches, her working class family prepares for the all-important Quinceañera - a lavish coming-of-age celebration. To help with expenses, Magdalena is forced to wear a hand-me-down party dress and abandon her dream of arriving in a Hummer limousine. But when her father discovers she's pregnant and refuses to believe the incredible truth - she's actually still a virgin - Magdalena moves in with her elderly Uncle Tomas (Chalo González) and black sheep cousin Carlos (Jesse Garcia). Her newfound family is soon put to the test, however, when an unexpected crisis threatens to tear them apart, and Magdalena learns what it truly means to come of age.

4 out of 5 stars Mild, Yet Tasty Enchillada.......2007-06-12

Half in English, half in Spanish `Quincinera' is a coming-of-age story brimming with warmth and gentle humor. Significantly named, Magdalena (Emily Rios) is approaching her fifteenth birthday worthy of a debutante celebration. She is intimately dating Herman (J.R. Cruz) who is gentle and has aspirations for worldliness and the trappings a higher education can garner. Living with her is her cousin Carlos (Jesse Garcia) who is gay. Both treat each other alternately with scathing hostility and gentle regard. Polarizing the household are strict Catholic household head Ernesto (Jesus Castanos) and gentle great grand-uncle Tio Toma's (Chalo Gonzalez). In the meantime, Carlos, regarded as the black sheep of the family, has an affair with the nearby landlord, and both Magdalena and Carlos have to face conflicts involving betrayal and trust.

Much of the characterization and acting take away some of the soap-opera feel to the movie, especially with some solid writing and directing from Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. 'Quincinera' is good for giving us a fine cross-section of Mexican-American life and a drama that wins our affection.

4 out of 5 stars Appealing Alterna-Reality.......2007-06-06

As a native-born Los Angeleno, I found this appealing film existed in a sort of fairy tale land. It somehow makes LA seem green and lush, with old school charm. The movie is populated with young Latino men who belie few signs of machismo. Instead, they are interested in soft words, art, and, well, each other. Go figure.

But the souce of Quinceañera's real charm is its teen protagonist, Emily Rios as Magdalena. She is a marvel as her character finds her tightlipped way through this film. Ms. Rios's portrayal is unexpectedly subtle and layered, which is interesting in that the DVD extras reveal that her approach to acting is extremely simplistic. Brava!

The DVD extras also show that the writer/director team and production staff for Quinceañera are overwhelming Anglo (and mostly gay). This outsider viewpoint is not a weakness for filmwatchers, but I would argue that it does detract from its verisimilitude. That said, kudos to the filmmakers for introducing the issue of neighborhood gentrification into their film, though it is not really resolved in any fashion. Perhaps that is just as well; this film is essentially a warmhearted character study, and on those terms, it succeeds.

5 out of 5 stars !Que padre! Encantadora!!.......2007-05-29

This unique, and yet universally "human" story combines the charm and vividness of the Mexican culture...the beauty and spirit of that culture and its people, its dance, its religious beliefs, its music and customs and traditions of family and honour, and at the same time transcends these cultural differences it enlightens us on to take us on a human journey of true courage, honesty and love. A movie to watch over and over again, and talk to your friends about in movie clubs! Buy it and treasure it always. Learn how fundamentally we, as human beings, are looking and searching for the same values, even if these values seem to play out in what appears to be different worlds. A wonderful way to get a glimpse of what it means to be a 15 year old girl with mexican roots, living in a modern world. A wonderful way to learn what is important to us all in our search for truth.

Todd Haynes, ever unpredictable, follows up his experimental trilogy Poison and his restrained Safe with this flamboyant study in glam rock through the kaleidoscopic lens of Citizen Kane. Christian Bale plays Arthur Stuart, a reporter sent to investigate the legend of rock legend and bisexual pop icon Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as a not-so-thinly veiled David Bowie), who disappeared a decade ago after staging his own mock assassination. But Arthur is flooded with memories of his own adolescence as he interviews Slade's friends and business associates, peeling back the layer of makeup and spangles that was the model of rebellion for a generation of middle-class British kids and discovering a hollow center. Ewan McGregor almost steals the film as the punk pioneer Curt Wild (equal parts Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain), the genuine article to Slade's calculated, coifed image of glitter stardom. Haynes's film lacks nothing in capturing the flamboyance and spectacle of the era with flashy filmmaking and kitschy costumes, and if the plot seems lost in the preening and visual fireworks, perhaps that's the point: behind the façades and manufactured fronts is nothing but glitter, energy, and a beat. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The power of music and presence.......2007-05-29

I really liked this movie for the reason being that what the power of music and a musician can bring. If the musician is dressing a certain way, so is the public. If it is "ok" for the musician to be gay or bi, it is for the public too. What ever is in "style" the public relates. I know that some of you are probably thinking that this is a dream world that I am writing about, but look at society today. Let's take the red ribbon that the gay community started for AIDS awareness. What other ribbons came from it? ie, yellow, pink and others. What was once taboo is now mainstream. I also want to add that the main characters of this movie should be commended for their acting skills and "believability" in any character that they play. They both have tremendous acting skills and beautiful bodies. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes the "glam rock" era.

4 out of 5 stars Glitter and Glam.......2007-05-26

"Velvet Goldmine"

Glitter and Glam

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Velvet Goldmine" is impressive in the way it includes Oscar Wilde, his philosophies about art and his fascination with music. Even though Wilde is not a character in the film his presence is felt throughout. He is referenced throughout.
Curt is both a composite of Iggy Pop and Wilde--he is an artist as he creates music and Brian Slade is Dorian Gray. He throws his entire persona out there and into his music and traps himself into his own being. Because he has trapped himself, he leaves no room for growth. When he is pseudo-shot, he is arranging his own future. His sham death liberates him and secures him a place in history. He was controversial and bared all in his work and this is what deprived him of longevity. His popularity undoubtedly would have paled and he eventually would be forgotten. If he had changed, everything about him would have changed and he would be regarded as having sold out. By inaugurating his death, he guarantees himself an eternity.
This is not just a film--it is an experience. "Velvet Goldmine" has a sense of erotic innocence and therefore becomes a triumphant motion picture. It explores the effect of glam and the way it influenced the world view toward homosexuality.
There were two instances of a vivid evocation of gay life. The first is when the narrator is watching Slade on TV and he announces that he is a homosexual. The narrator fantasizes about pointing to the TV in front of his parents and saying "That's me". The second comes when the narrator buys his first Brian Slade album and a magazine with an article about Slade. He uses them as material to masturbate over.
The glam rockers changed the world when they brought to the world images that had been unthinkable images at that time. By doing so they eased life for gay men--they created a language that made it easier to explain ourselves to others. Their music can hardly be separated from the gay aspects of it.
The movie is stunning to watch and the imagery stays long after the movie is over. Sure, it is a surreal view of glam rock but so what? It is entertainment. It may be over the top and campy and excessive but it works beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars jonathan ryhs meyer...ewan mcgregor...wow.......2007-04-14

this movie was really good. I was pleasantly pleased when I bought this movie on a whim and was given great results.
The two leading male characters did a great job. Not to mention Christian Bale as well. It was all based on his memories and the memories of jonathan ryhs meyer's character wife telling of the story. I cant remember names...im so bad at that. I watched it awhile ago...sorry!!
its a really good movie...you should check it out. rent before to be safe, in case its not your style of movie.
i loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Brian Slade: Man is least himself when he talks in his own person... Give him a mask and he'll tell you the truth., .......2007-04-11

The year is 1984 and it's been 10 years since glam-rock superstar Brian Slade (Meyers) faked his own death and vanished from the spotlight. Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale), an investigative reporter, interviews the friends and business associates of the ex-pop icon trying to find out what lays behind the glitter make-up, flamboyance, outrage, and the intoxicating freedom of the sexual revolution. While uncovering the truth about disappearing star, Arthur will come to terms with his own past.

This movie is brilliant, wild (e), beautiful, exotic, as the rock movement it depicts and in its best moments (which are plenty) it has achieved the result that the praised to the high heaven "Moulin Rouge!" could only dream about. VG is lurid, is dreamlike, is surreal and it recreates perfectly the decadent world of 1970 Glam Rock with its androgynous male rock stars who looked like the strange and exotic flowers of faraway worlds, with its nostalgia and obsession, glitter and psychedelic colors, the world where Oscar Wilde whose name has been mentioned more than once would've felt at home.

The film's visual palette is incredible, the costumes are jaw-dropping, the music and singing simply mesmerize. Ewan McGregor's acting and courage (Curt Wild, the punk-rock pioneer who looked in the movie very much like another Curt) was among the most memorable along with a relative newcomer Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Brian Slade and incredible Toni Collette as Brian's American wife Mandy. While certainly not everyone's cup of tea due to many scenes with homosexuality, drugs, and full frontal nudity, the movie deserves to be seen for the successful recreation of the world of glam and glitter rock, "elegant crowds... amid sumptuous ornamentation".

2 out of 5 stars I'd like to thank..........2007-03-12

This film owes a lot to Roger Daltry and the Who, Jim Morrison and the Doors, Ken Russell, and even Orson Welles. There is nothing original about this -- derivitive is too much of a compliment. Yes, three of the four leads do a fine job -- I exempt Bale -- Toni Collette is fine as always, but otherwise -- don't waste your time.

Richard Pryor's face is plastered all over the cover of Car Wash, but don't be fooled. This slight comedy, made in 1976, is an ensemble piece much like Robert Altman's or Alan Rudolph's all-star movies in that there are a lot of familiar faces who have relatively little screen time or business to attend to. Set in smoggy Los Angeles, the film opens with a radio announcer's voiceover, "Hey, hey, L.A. It's a brand new day." And the camera pans the street, zooming in on the Dee-Luxe Car Wash, which is owned by the ultimate cheapskate, Mr. B (Sully Boyar). In rapid succession, we're introduced to a dizzying array of characters who all work or hang out at the car wash: drag queen Lindy (Antonio Fargas), brothers Floyd and Lloyd who want to be in show business, a hip brother, an angry brother, a taxi driver (George Carlin), cashier Marsha (Melanie Mayron), and a plethora of "types" who wash, dry, and polish everything in sight while making time to make time. Car Wash doesn't do much or have a lot to say, the laughs aren't particularly original, and the actors don't have much to do save for Fargas, whose role as a drag queen was groundbreaking because the character wasn't discriminated against or killed at the end. Even Richard Pryor is wasted in his single scene as a wealthy preacher named Daddy Rich. Car Wash, which was written by mainstream director Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin, Falling Down, The Client), is ultimately uneventful. Its revival on DVD is puzzling because it looks about as faded, dated, and undistinguished as a rusty old car. --Paula Nechak

5 out of 5 stars A Walk Back in Time.......2007-06-04

I bought this DVD to bring back good memories of my father and I watching this movie on KTLA back in the 70's. My father saw them filming the movie down at Sixth and Alvarado in L.A. and he loved to watch it with me on late night TV. It is just pure classic 70's movie making and a lot of fun to watch and some good laughs.

Always enjoy this film whenever I see it. It's still very funny, and more so if you just sit back and enjoy it. It's not a masterpiece; and I don't think it was meant to be one. Just a funny, enjoyable movie. The Amazon editorial reviewer obviously tried to read too much into it.

5 out of 5 stars Editor eview needs a TOILET FLUSHING OF A REVISION.......2006-12-19

THIS MOVIE IS A CLASSIC, 10 STAR MOVIE WITH ALL THE GREAT COMEDIANS OF THEIR TIME AND EVEN TO LATTER GENERATIONS. THE EDITOR FOR THIS MOVIE CRITIQUE SAID THAT "THIS MOVIE IS NOT ORIGINAL??" HELLOOOO THIS WAS MADE IN THE '70S! OF COURSE THIS MOVIE AND IT'S MATERIAL IS ORIGINAL, KIND OF A NOO BRAINER AND WHOMEVER GAVE THAT CRITIC HER JOB SHOULD CTIQUE THEMSELVES ON WHY IN THEE WORLD THEY GAVE HER THE POSITION.

SOMEONE SHOULD TELL THAT CRITIC, PAULA SELF-CHECK OR WHATEVER, THAT SHE HAS NO IDEA AS TO WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT AND IF PEOPLE ALL OVER BELIEVE CRITICS LIKE HER, THAT SUCH TIMELESS MASTERPIECES SUCH AS THIS MOVIE "IS NO GOOD," EXCELLENT OR EVEN A DECENT MOVIE FOR THAT MATTER, NO MOVIE WORTH WATCHING WOULD GET ANY ATTENTION SO JUDGING FOR YOURSELF WOULD BE "THEE" BEST OPTION.

4 out of 5 stars Car Wash vs. The Wash.......2006-10-27

I still see "Car Wash" on TV and this will always be a classic! I was excited when I saw the ad for "The Wash" with Dre and Snoop because I thought it was a rendition of "Car Wash." Buuuuzzzz! Wrong answer, "The Wash" was an excuse. The only thing having to do with "Car Wash" was that it was filmed in the same style in the same location, not a remake! "The Wash" stank! 'It' needed a WASH, with a second and third coat of soap and still wouldn't match up to what I though was a remake. It's cool that the casting department used Rich for "Daddy Rich" as it worked as a vehicle to promote the movie, and ultimately allows Rich to make the cameo of all cameos. The real star of this movie is Bill Duke, now a director in his own right, as the truth and maybe the anger and frustration of every black man on this planet named Abdullah. That character comes to mind daily at my current job and I try so hard not to go off on folks. Car Wash represented people in an ensembled-scripted environment at a real location. If you don't know what an ensemble is, think of, "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" An All-Star freestyle session given a few lines to set the pace, and the actors take it from there and beyond. Several directors have tried and failed, I'm glad this one is the example of the classics. Others I recommend are, "After Hours," "Friday (all 3,)" "3 Strikes," and a couple more I can't think of right now. As for The Wash, if you haven't seen it, don't bother unless you can see it for less than a dollar.

2 out of 5 stars another D list wana be porn.......2007-01-19

It just is not there the story line bad and the actors are not good looking.

3 out of 5 stars Not really worth it..........2006-11-04

I bought this as I thought all three movies would be worth watching and boy was I wrong. The only one of the three that is worth it is Exposed: The Making of a Legend, which is a documentary on the making of Buckleroos. It is well made, funny and has a wonderful insight into the world of gay porn and how it is made.
The other two movies were pretty appalling - softcore porn that didn't really do much. Sure, the men were kinda hot but really, it doesn't go far enough to make it porn and the acting is appalling enough to be porn!
Locked Up has some interesting moments but the characters are bad, the story was kinda shallow and the Mike character (and the actor himself - as seen in the cast interviews) is really annoying.
The Hole can be deemed as kinda funny but, yet again, the acting was bad and I guess perhaps the 'hardcore' version, if there is one, would've been more fulfilling.

All in all, I recommend buying Exposed on its own and ignoring the other two.

This is my favorite movie. It is hilarious. This is a real gut buster. I reccomend this movie to everybody to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Richard Pryor Fan.......2007-03-17

If you like Richard Pryor, you'll love this DVD. Pryor plays three different characters in "Which Way is Up" and every character is a riot! His interaction with the children in "Bustin' Loose will have you in stitches! The only reason this doesn't get five stars is because of "Brewster's Millions", which I did not find quite as funny as the other three movies. Three great and one decent Richard Pryor movies all on one DVD---you can't beat it for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2007-01-09

Though I could not (and still cannot) get this DVD to play in my DVD player of choice, when I did have the opportunity to set it up in another room it was pure enjoyment. Richard Pryor was born to make laughs.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movies, Bare Bones Treatment.......2006-02-09

As you may know, comedian Richard Pryor passed away in December of 2005 following a massive heart attack. The award winning funnyman had also been suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. On February 7th, Universal released a four movie collection titled The Richard Pryor 4-Movie Collection. Universal re-released Bustin' Loose on DVD last year as part of their Soul Cinema collection, so I was a bit curious as to why this film was being released on DVD again.

The Richard Pryor 4 Movie Collection features the following films-Which Way Is Up, Brewster's Millions, Car Wash, and Bustin' Loose. This is a good collection of Pryor's funnier films. The bad thing about this collection is the bare bones treatment. There is no booklet, there are no new bonus features (as a matter of fact there are no bonus features at all), and there aren't even four discs. The movies are packaged on dual sided discs with two movies on each side of one disc. Each film is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1).

As for the movies, you may have seen them before on DVD. Which Way Is Up? was released on DVD in the past but has been out of print for awhile. This was one of Pryor's funniest vehicles. In this film he plays three different characters. Many critics have said that Eddie Murphy was inspired by this film because in later films Coming To America, and The Nutty Professor he juggled multiple roles. In this film Pryor stars as three different characters. Pryor stars as Leroy the orange picker, Leroy's father, and he stars as the minister who sexed up Leroy's wife while he was away working. Leroy himself also falls in love with another woman and finds himself juggling relationships.

Car Wash is a classic film with a host of guest stars. Pryor wasn't the star of Car Wash despite his name usually getting top billing in cover art. It's an ensemble film about people working at a popular car wash. Antonio Fargas (Starsky & Hutch), Bill Duke (Menace 2 Society) and George Carlin (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) co-star in the film.

Bustin' Loose ushered in a new era of Richard Pryor films. This ushered in the family friendly Richard Pryor (although there is still strong language in the film). Richard Pryor stars in this film as a man on parole with the threat of going back to jail held over his head. He doesn't have much time but he has to transport Cicely Tyson and a group of rag tag youths across the country.

Brewster's Millions is a very popular Pryor film although it's considered a dud by many. In this film Pryor has inherited a lot of money, but to get the money has to spend $30 million dollars in thirty days. There is a catch. He can't purchase anything large like a house. It's a fun film and John Candy co-stars.

The set just comes across as cheap when you look at other movie collections that Universal has released in the past year. The Alfred Hitchcock Collection, and special editions of To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting and The Deer Hunter seem so precious, unique, and effort filled. This set just seems thrown together. If you already own these films on DVD, keep your single disc sets. This collection is so bare bones it deserves to be in the bargain basket. What else is tragic about this movie collection is once again no bonus features. This is at least the third incarnation of Car Wash on DVD. So many of the people involved in the film are still alive and working in the industry. It would be great to get some kind of commentary or bonus featurette for this film one day. Also, since Richard has passed, it would have been nice if they held up this set's release to include some kind of tribute to Richard.

The bottom line is if you already own these films keep your single discs. If you don't own these films, this is a reasonable way to purchase all of the films.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2006-10-04

Ya. it had a pretty naked chick in it. but man it was booooring. definitely one for a very specialised market

4 out of 5 stars VERY NICE.......2006-06-28

VERY WELL DONE THIS MAN DOES GREAT WORK. STAY AWAY FROM GIRL ON A SWING IT IS VERY BORING.

3 out of 5 stars Wash Day?????????.......2006-04-02

Wouldn't consider this to be an artistic movie. Just an opportunity to
show a fairly attractive model in various stages of undress. Jenny is
worth the expense. Natural body in her early 20's. Hokey backyard
set though, so it doesn't have an expensive filming budget. Wish I had
a girfriend like her.

3 out of 5 stars A little light.......2005-10-10

The Idea was good.I thought this would be more euro.Should of had more than one girl. There wasn't as much full frontal as you would have expected.Just a few scenes in the tub. These movies are bought for the nudity, at least they should put some in it

4 out of 5 stars Glorified backyard camp out........2005-04-17

Camping out in the backyard was usually pretty fun when you are a young teenager with your friends. I guess if your spoiled older sister was going to camp out in the back yard, it might be like this. Actually, it's like how you want to imagine how a very beautiful girl might go about "roughing it" over the weekend. You can almost see a house nearby, but we have this "bedroom" set up almost in the woods or something. The DVD was probably shot on a $50 budget, so don't expect any Hollywood glitz and glamour here. It's basic, simple, down to Earth, plotless, and fun. Just a girl with a fantastic body going about some very simple "wash day" type chores out in the open air. It's very refreshing to see such a beautiful creature be so comfortable changing clothes, being topless while washing her clothes, and nude while bathing in an old fashioned outdoor bathtub. More nudity would have been nice, but there was plenty considering what you get quality wise. Maybe another David Hamilton in the making here. I'll be looking for more from this company.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars So much potential.... :-( wasted.......2007-06-13

I just finished watching this on cable and I was really disappointed. I had high hopes after finding out it was similar to the old Car Wash movie - which I love and highly recommend - and then I saw that Snoop and Dre were in it... then it just wasn't that funny or really even attention holding.

I recommend the Friday Trilogy, Little Man (which was a surprise!), and the OG-triple-OG Car Wash with Richard Pryor for some really funny stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Be Prepared To Laugh.......2007-03-27

Written and directed by DJ Pooh - who also plays Slim - the comedy features Dr. Dre (Sean) and Snoop Dogg (Dee Loc) as friends who have had bad breaks and made some poor choices, but stumble upon one last opportunity to get things together under some very bizarre circumstances.

The cast is heavy into hip-hop, with Xzibit, Eminem, Kurupt and Truth Hurts having parts big & small. Other actors include Pauly Shore, Tommy Chong, Shaq and George Wallace (as car wash owner, Mr. Washington).

The action mostly takes place at a car wash in Los Angeles, with Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg being a surprisingly good comedic duo. And Eminem - as the fired assistant manager with major issues - is hilarious in his brief appearance.

It is a wacky plot with over-the-top scenes and actors who are obviously having a blast. The editing sometimes makes following the plot a bit choppy, but that criticism can be directed at many comedies. The Wash is good for a few laughs and does not take things too seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good .......2007-03-21

The Wash is pretty good. It features artists such as Ludacris, Eminem, and Xzibit.

3 out of 5 stars Not That Bad At All (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-03-16

This is one of those movies that was pushing 2 1/2 stars. I gave it a higher rating for two reasons: because most of the females in the movie looked hot, and I some how managed to laugh throughout most of the movie. This isn't a bad movie overall, but it does have some bad parts. It wasn't the best acting ever, but it was okay in this movie. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg do an excellent job playing their parts and the plot execution is okay as well. Then you have a lot of popular west coast rappers in this movie as well aside from Dre and Snoop that many will easily recognize (I'm suprised Ice Cube didn't get mixed up in this). If you want to see a a few rappers and some nice females in a laughable movie, then check this out. It's not the best movie out there, but it isn't the worst. This is one of those movies that will be on TBS in about 2 years. Peace!

    4 out of 5 stars The Wash.......2007-01-12

People cant be too critical of this movie, just a little comedy with Dre and Snoop as the main characters.

The story wasnt really nothing special, but it was still quite funny. This movie has its funny moments, like when Dre has the girl over and Snoop turns up the music and they keep doin it back and forth. Also when Snoop tells off Dre when hes tryin to sell weed to people at the wash. I recommend this movie to fans of Snoop or Dre, and fans of comedy of course. Im not being critical of this movie because its not that type of movie to be really criticized.

In alot of comdedies, I usually dont laugh at the stupid stuff, but this movie actually made me laugh quite a bit because of how they act so check this movie out.

    Description

From the director of The Fluffer comes this witty, erotic spoof of the Japanese Ringu movies starring Jason Adonis, Tag Eriksson and Josh Hammer. The film begins with two young men hearing the legend of a video tape that when watched will turn the viewer gay in seven days. It turns out that some of the local boys have already seen the tape and have begun idolizing Judy Garland and watching women's television! They try watching straight porn to no avail; these boys have "gone gay." It's then that a journalist arrives to investigate the phenomenon and he watches the tape. He tries desperately to save himself from "the Curse" as the seven days go by.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Misrepresented.......2006-02-18

This was not the product that was advertised. It was billed as a "witty, erotic spoof of the Japanese Ringu movies, from the director of the fluffer" I thought I was purchasing a comedy. It's nothing but soft-core porn. Don't get me wrong, the boys are hot but all the "good bits" have been cut out. If you like soft-core, this is a wonderful title. If you want to hurtle the remote at the screen when "good bits" are edited, run down the local XXX video store.

    2 out of 5 stars A Good Idea - Bad Acting - (psst - its porno...).......2006-01-05

It amazes me that this film is actually available not just here, but through many of the companies that mail and rent DVD's. It is pornography! Not that there is anything wrong with that, unless you want your kids watching several guys having "more than" soft-core sex. Now these guys are buff and good-looking, but are lacking the sawdust-grit stench of masculinity.

The premise is a `rip-off' from "The Ring", where after you watch a video you get a phone call saying you'll be gay in one week sounds hilarious. In practice here, it kind of stinks. The `straight' male actors can barely make it through a sentence without a telltale lisp (sorry, I know that that is not a determining factor for gays - you're reading from one). Nor can that occasional awkward pose be disguised. Mind you, these guys are tutored porno actors, not Juilliard graduates. It can actually be quite funny `camp'. Of course, in real life, if anyone got videotape that made you gay (or anything) you would make copies and make everyone you like, deceptively watch it! A clever idea. Hope I didn't give anything away!

    5 out of 5 stars FUN!.......2005-12-03

This movie is a perfect friday night -- watch alone -- light flick. It is totally fun! The guys are SCORCHING hot, the story moves along, and you really, really care about the characters. Especially the one from Sweden! It has a good musical score, it is funny, very sexy and a blast if you are in the mood for it. Excellent!

    1 out of 5 stars Pee-yew.......2005-10-26

Do not be fooled by the blurb. This is just a run-of-the-mill porn flick with the nasties edited out - nothing more. Turns out there's a hardcore version as well, which includes all those edited-out nasties. It was not filmed, just shot on video, like all the hardcore stuff. Witty? Hardly. Wooden porn "actors," minimal script/dialogue, harsh lighting, choppy editing. No cinematic value whatever. Just a feeble attempt to create an R-rated product out of an X-rated flick, I guess to pull in a few extra bucks? Where "The Fluffer," by the same filmmaker, was an actual movie with moderately capable actors and standard film techniques employed, this is just a watered-down skin-flick. May as well find the hardcore version and watch that, or better still, just rent one that's better made. It would almost certainly hold one's interest longer than this throwaway.

3 out of 5 stars They all look gay from begining.......2005-10-25

    The concept is very good.
But I don't see any difference between before and after.
They all look very gay from the begining.
And dropping "DUDE" and "PUSSY" here and there in the conversation will make every one straight?
    That is so retro.

    "THE FLUFFER"

    Interesting Work

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

I suppose everyone knows what a fluffer is-- if you don't ask a friend. I think a fluffer's job has to be very interesting but I wonder if you can make a living from it. But I digress.
"The Fluffer" (First Run Films) is the story of Sean, a young, inexperienced gay male who recently moved to the city of angels and is struggling to find his place in both his professional and personal life. One night while watching gay porn, he becomes infatuated with Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney) and he goes over to the studio that made the film and gets himself hired as a production assistant. Via the job he ends up on the set of a movie where he meets Johnny Rebel. Johnny was having a bit of trouble getting "it" up for a particular scene and he asks Sean for a little help. From this point on Sean has a little extra to do at work--he is Johnny's fluffer. As his fluffer, Sean becomes obsessed with Johnny only to learn that Johnny has many demons of his own. He is straight and arrogant, egotistical and a user of crystal meth who lives with his stripper girlfriend, Julie.
When Julie gets pregnant, things go out of control. She wants the baby and Johnny is beginning his decline as a top porn star. Porn stars have short spans as top dogs as there is always someone younger and better equipped waiting in the wings to take the lead. "The Fluffer" gives us a look at the gay porn industry though the eyes of a photographer who becomes a fluffer. Sean is obsessed with a gay-for-pay straight porn actor whom he regards as perfection. With the pregnancy of his girlfriend and the start of his decline as a box office draw, the porn star sinks into a state of despair and drags Sean with him. Sean gains a skewed view of his idol and of his chance to have a meaningful relationship with him and the destruction that follows and the salvation afterwards is what this film is all about.
It is an interesting, well-acted film with complicated and interesting characters and is basically well done. Oscar material it is not. Johnny Rebel is a self-centered opportunist who can't seem to get enough of anything. Once in a while he wants Sean and Sean is well aware of where he stands with Scott (Johnny Rebel is his screen name) but he can't help himself.
You would think that a movie about fluffing would have some hot sex scenes. It doesn't and there is no happy ending. Instead we have a look at unrequited love and the depths to which one will sink to try to get that love returned.
The only thing really sexy about the movie is the title. The guys in the movie are not so hot and the plot is a drawn out exercise in what could have been done in no more than a half an hour. It could have been so much better. Some of it works really well but after the first half the movie went downhill. I don't know that I would watch it a second time but it was pleasant enough for a brief respite. Have a look and decide for yourself. But be warned--a classic, it is not.

3 out of 5 stars Worth seeing it, for sure........2006-02-17

Even if it's not one of my favorite gay films ever, I think this is a very interesting film to learn about the movie industry (or probably the gay underground side of it). The two main characters are a visual plus for the movie. I wouldn't buy this movie unless you are very much into some of the topics the movie deals with. I do recommend to rent it at least.

3 out of 5 stars Stuck in the middle with you.............2005-10-06

"The Fluffer" boasts some moments of really good acting and some quality comedic & dramatic scenes throughout it's run. However, as a heterosexual male, this movie also had plenty of moments that left me feeling uncomfortable, and some others that were pretty outlandish.

Not to familiar with movies in this genre, I thought I would give this one a go. It was worth watching, but I really wouldn't want to see it more than once.

Sean is a young inexperienced gay man whose just moved to LA and is struggling to find his place in both his professional and personal life. While renting a gay X-rated film one night, he becomes intoxicated with its leading man Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney). So he hightails it over to the company that made the film and gets himself a job as a P.A. (production assistant).

This leads him to an on-set encounter with none other than Johnny Rebel- who after some "difficulty" shooting a particular scene, carouses young Sean over to him and asks him for a little "help". Hence, Sean becomes a sort of personal "fluffer" for Johnny when he has this difficult moments from there on....

"Fluffing" is a term that refers to someone who coaxes and erection out of a male porn actor when they are having trouble.

So Sean becomes obsessed with Johnny- a guy who has plenty of demons of his own. Johnny is a straight, egotistical, arrogant crystal meth user who lives with his stripper girlfriend Julie (Roxanne Day).

Things began to really spiral out of control when Julie gets pregnant, wants to have the baby, and Johnny starts to decline in his status as a "top dog" with the company he works for.

Some scenes in "The Fluffer" work very nicely. The scenes with Johnny and Julia, as well as most with Johnny and Sean are very well acted and play out nicely. Johnny is a tortured soul- and you can easily feel his despair. All three of the actors did a great job with their characters.

The movie takes a real downturn towards the end- with Johnny and Sean hightailing it down to Mexico for reasons you'll have to watch to find out. Johnny's descent downhill plays out too quick, and overall is pretty far fetched. There's also a small subplot with Sean trying to date some other guy that really wasn't needed in the movie.

Overall, this reviewer felt the stronger half of the film was it's first half. And although the subject matter and some scenes were a little too much for me personally, the performances in "The Fluffer" helped greatly to make the movie work.

I wouldn't want to see it again- but would say the "The Fluffer" is an average film with some above average acting.

4 out of 5 stars ADORATION IS A HEAVY BURDEN.......2005-08-26

The Fluffer is a very interesting and almost squalid view of gay porn industry through the eyes of a videographer turned back stage fluffer. Our "hero" is obsessed with a gay-for-pay straight guy who is porn perfection. We discover that the "straight guy" has a pole-dancer girlfriend who eventually becomes pregnant by him. His moral decline (imagine that), and the "fluffer's" skewed view of his potential with his idol leads to destruction and a form of salvation for 2 of the 3 main characters. The movie starts slow, but gains speed. Don't buy it...rent it...!
