Description
This funny, poignant comedy, in the gentle tradition of SHALL WE DANCE and THE WEDDING BANQUET, traces the lives of two handsome boyfriends who become entangled with a young woman who proposes the idea of conceiving a child with them and creating a family. A hit at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival where it played in the Director`s Fortnight, the story gets more complicated as conservative family members try to break up the gay couple`s relationship. Ultimately, the guys and the woman caryying their child come to the realization that they will have to decide for themselves the true meaning of family. Featuring original music by Bobby McFerrin, this warm and engaging comedy has won the hearts of filmgoers across the country.

Not only is Thoroughly Modern Millie a zany romantic spoof of the Roaring Twenties, it s a musical that won an Oscar for Best Original Music Score! Julie Andrews stars as Millie, an innocent country girl who comes to the big city in search of a husband. Along the way she becomes the secretary of the rich and famous Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), befriends the sweet Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), fights off white slaver Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) and hooks up with a lively paper clip salesman, Jimmy (James Fox). In the end it takes a rich nutty jazz baby like Muzzy (Carol Channing) to unravel all these complications, give a great party, and match up lovers.

Julie Andrews is at her peak of adorability in this enjoyable (and surprisingly sarcastic) spoof of the 1920s. It has every trick: occasional silent-movie intertitles, flapper lingo ("Oh, banana oil"), and a laughable plot about women being sold into white slavery by the scheming manageress (splendid Beatrice Lillie) of a Hotel for Ladies, aided by a cabal of wicked Chinese. (The stereotypes are bearable only if you remember this is a spoof of silent movie melodrama.) Even with able support from Mary Tyler Moore and James Fox, this is Julie's show; she plays to the camera with the collusion of director George Roy Hill, who's clearly smitten with her silly streak. The movie has an annoying tendency to spend time on musical numbers--a Jewish wedding, a vaudeville act--that don't serve the plot. A future Broadway musical would create a new score, except for the delightfully catchy title tune. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Just pure fun.......2007-06-01
This musical is just pure fun - jazzy music, great characters and lots of laughs. We love it!
Throughly Modern Millie.......2007-04-05
This is not exactly a "family movie" which is perfect for adults that enjoy adult humor, but shun violence, sex, and violence. Surprisingly enough, there are a few explitives in this "G" rated movie. Carol Channing is intoxicating as the pleasure seeking widow. This is a must see for those who miss the glamour of "old time" films. The costumes, dance numbers and song are all in fun along with the story line.
Thoroughly entertaining!.......2007-04-01
I watched this with my granddaughters who are ages 11 and 6. Both enjoyed it very much. It is so nice to have a wholesome movie to watch together!
Thoroughly Modern Millie.......2007-03-11
We recently saw this title on stage. It is still a big hit!
The movie version is very well done and holds well to the stage version.
The movie has a few songs that some stage presentations don't use.
All of the music is very well done. Julie Andrews is brilliant, as always!
I feel that this is a movie that the entire family can view and be entertained.
Whose brilliant idea was this?.......2007-02-22
I bought this DVD because Bea Lillie was in it. I remembered her from 50's tv and thought she was funny. She was a disappointment. Okay, the movie was supposed to be a spoof, but it had so many cliches that it was not enjoyable. However, Julie Andrews sang and looked beautiful, and Mary Tyler Moore danced and also looked beautiful. And it is fun to see them in younger days.

Poor Charlotte Hollis. She's been shunned by the community for decades, ever since the fateful night in 1927 when her lover was hacked apart with an axe. Her antebellum southern mansion is slated for the bulldozer, as it stands in the way of highway construction. Charlotte's only hope lies in her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland), coming down from up north to help settle things. Miriam, however, has other designs. Together with her boyfriend Drew (Joseph Cotten), she embarks on a scheme to systematically drive Charlotte out of her mind (not a great leap) and get her mitts on the family fortune. From there, things only get more complicated. Charlotte puts the "gothic" in southern gothic, as a great showcase for completely bizarre, overwrought, and out-of-control performances from all involved. Agnes Moorehead plays Charlotte's loyal, disheveled housekeeper to the hilt, with an odd inflection that calls to mind Amos and Andy more than southern gentility. As the drunken, conniving Dr. Drew, Cotten's accent is indeterminate at times, and seems to come and go. As great as the supporting players are, though, the crown goes to Bette Davis as the shrieking Charlotte, a portrait of isolation and decay stuck in a world of tragic delusions inside her crumbling mansion. De Havilland is a close second as the scheming Miriam; the scene where she slaps the holy snot out of a hysterical Charlotte is itself worth the price of admission. Mary Astor (in her last role) and Cecil Kellaway (as a kindly Lloyd's of London adjuster) put in the only performances with any restraint, acting as counterweights for the rest of the cast. Besides, you'll never get another chance to see Joseph Cotten playing the harpsichord and singing, or caked in mud and lily pads! With Robert Aldrich's claustrophobic direction, Charlotte is as Southern as a field of kudzu, and as subdued as a train wreck. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
This is the tale of a wealthy southern spinster Charlotte Hollis (Bette Davis) who lives with her eccentric maid (Agnes Moorehead) in a decaying southern mansion, shunned by the townsfolk after the mysterious axe-murder of her late lover. When her jealous cousin (Olivia de Havilland) and her cousin's wily husband (Cotton) arrive for a visit, the two conspire to drive Charlotte insane and have her commited so the two can sell off her estate and pocket the proceeds.

A HAIR RAISING SHOCKER.......2007-06-09
THIS SUPERB FILM STARS BETTE DAVIS AS CHARLOTTE HOLLIS WHO HAS BEEN CLOSETED IN HER MANSION SINCE THE GRISLY MURDER OF HER MARRIED LOVER MANY YEARS EARLIER. FINE SUPPORT COMES FROM OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND AS HER COUSIN MIRIAM AND JOSEPH COTTEN AS DOCTOR DREW BAYLESS. THIS THRILLER WILL HAVE YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT AND SPECIAL MENTION MUST BE MADE OF CHARLOTTE'S LOYAL SERVANT OSCAR NOMINEE AGNES MOOREHEAD - I DON'T THINK EVEN THIS FINE ACTRESS HAS DONE ANYTHING BETTER. FINE REMASTERING FROM THE 1964 PRINT ADDS TO ONE'S PLEASURE SO DON'T MISS THIS REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT.
What A Twisted Tale Of Life-Long Deception!.......2007-05-26
Davis and DeHavilland are truly at their best in this shocking thriller, set in the bayou country of Louisiana. The setting, the family dynamics, and the un-expected twists and turns in the story will keep your attention riveted to the screen. I enthusiastically recommend this movie to all lovers of Hollywood classics...
Great entertainment.......2007-02-12
The story behind the conception of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" is well documented, so the question is: without being another Bette Davis/Joan Crawford battlefest, does it match up to the runaway success of "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane"? My opinion is that it ranks as a good movie, but falls into the shadow of it's predecessor.
The plot follows Davis as Charlotte, an eccentric recluse who has been shunned by the townsfolk ever since her married lover was found brutally murdered at a party when she was a young girl. Branded as the killer, Charlotte has grown into a bitter and lonely old woman, who is finally forced to come out of her isolation when the county wants to knock down her house to build a new road. The main part of the film begins as Charlotte's cousin Miriam arrives in an attempt to talk some sense into her, and all the skeletons of the past come to light again.
The film is built around it's two central stars, Bette Davis and Olivia de Haviland (who plays Miriam). The two could scarcely be more different. Davis plays Charlotte as wide-eyed, shrill and in a constant state of nervous terror, while de Havilland delivers a performance of sleek velvety calm. The film hinges on the relationship between these two women, and out of the two of them, it is Miriam rather then Charlotte who suggests a character with much more going on beneath the surface, thanks to de Havilland's glacial cool. Davis is brittle and exhausting nearly all the time, and although she was one of the greatest Hollywood stars of her time, some more subtelty would have greatly enhanced the character of Charlotte in places. However, for the most part she is terrific, in fact her performance gets better and better as the film progresses, culminating in a very moving conclusion. De Havilland also does a great job, speaking in silky soft tones for the most part, but capable of erupting into surprisingly venomous anger as more of her true character comes to light. As is usual with a well known film like this, the twists and surprise revelations are already well known, but what impressed me was the the way the various strands were worked into the film, and how effectively some of the twists were then later built up into new twists! It must have been very effective for first time audiences in 1964, and for anyone who has not seen it even today.
The film looks great. Beautifully shot in black and white, it makes great use of selective lighting and deep shadows, more often than not inside the grand but rotting mansion that Charlotte lives in. There are also some great lines in the script, most often spoken by Davis, which make the proceedings border on high camp some of the time, but for the most part it is a quality product. What detracts from the enjoyment are some very lazy post dubbing in several places (where you can see that the actors are either mouthing something different or not speaking at all!), and the opening prologue set at a party supposedly in 1927, which has no attempt at period detail at all as most of the party goers are dressed in contemporary 1960's oufits (one girl even has a beehive hairdo!). This lack of care by director Robert Aldrich is more in line with one of William Castle's schlocky (but enthusiastic) efforts, rather than a major studio production like "Charlotte" was supposed to be.
I haven't really got that many bones to pick though, as the film delivers solid entertainment for most of it's 2hour running time. It IS a little long, but the constantly unravelling plot together with the performances from it's stars (not forgetting to mention the hilarious turn by Agnes Moorhead as the tousled maid) keep you hooked all the way through. Although some of the early parts are a bit of a screech-fest, it definitely improves as reaches the end, in fact Davis' performance in the last half hour becomes quite touching (barring her cross-eyed freak out on the stairs), and the ending scene especially shows that the film has a real heart.
If you haven't seen the movie before...............2007-01-18
......don't watch the film with the commentary feature
activated. The long-winded, overexcited announcer gives
away the plot details within minutes of the opening credits.
Otherwise, this film is a wonderful, nostalgic presentation
of the B-movie style, black and white thrillers of the
late 50's/early 60's. Bette Davis, fresh off her success
of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," returns in a film
adaption of another Henry Farrell story. She reprises the role
of a mentally disturbed dame (in this case, done Southern style)
and she takes it way over the top, but still within the threshold
of high cinema. Fellow Academy Award winner, Olivia de Havilland
(replacing Joan Crawford, who was originally slated for "Miriam")
gives a good performance as the goodhearted relative with dark
ulterior motives.
This is a great movie. The theatrical trailers are laughable at how they present this film as the most suspenseful, horrifying film ever.
Well, given the time period, who knows? In any case, this is an enjoyable
exercise in suspense with Bette Davis at the helm, which always
translates into worthwhile cinema. Along with Davis and De Haviland, Agnes Moorhead
gives a remarkably delightful
performance as the feisty housekeeper,
receiving a well-deserved Academy Award nomination.
Highly Recommendable.
TURN OFF THE COMMENTARY FEATURE UNTIL YOU'VE HAD THE CHANCE
TO SEE THE MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH!!!!!!! If not, the
entire suspense element will be ruined.
HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE.......2007-01-13
It was just as I remembered it. I had a good time watching it with my daughter. She can't believe what we use to think was scary.

In the tradition of Die! Die! My Darling comes this tale of a young heroine made miserable by a lover's eccentric relations. Gwyneth Paltrow plays a New Yorker who marries a handsome boyfriend (Jonathon Schaech) and--following a confidence-shattering encounter with Manhattan crime--moves to his family's thoroughbred ranch. There, the young man's dominating mother (a hammy, Blanche DuBois-like role for Jessica Lange) goes to war with new bride's claim on mama's Oedipal turf. A stock thriller ensues, and while one has a sense of déjà vu about the whole thing, the film is fun for its audacity, its underpinnings of dime-store psychology, and some gothic stereotypes. (Hal Holbrook is perfect as one's fantasy of a country doctor.) --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A stunning beautiful movie.......2006-12-11
This movie has a beautiful storyline. Gwyneth is fabulous and looks great and her acting is stunning. Very attractive. Jessica lange is fabulous. I like when they meet for the first time and catches gwinnie in the nude. Cute butt! The actor who plays her husband is good too. This is a movie that people can watch from time to time about a loving couple and many exciting and entertaining surpises. Definitely an underrated movie.
How can you be brainwashed by your own mother?.......2006-10-17
A rather melodramatic rewriting of a plot that could have been produced by Tennessee Williams. The black widow of a mother who only lives and marries to get a son and put her hands on a big agricultural - or so - estate will not hesitate to kill and then she brainwashes her own son into believing his father died in some kind of an accident. What happens when this son gets married and is expecting a child from his newly wed wife ? The attachment of the son to his mother is shown as perverse and leading to the rejection of the wife, of the mother of the baby to come. Then it melodramatically develops into a new criminal affair and the son finds then the courage, in the name of his wife and child, to break off and go. There is something incestuous and insane in this mother and the film sounds sad and unhappy, in spite of the positive ending. A son, a man, a human being in general cannot live as a human being if he or she rejects his or her parents utterly. This is hatred and hatred is nothing but the perversion of love and hatred makes love impossible. A man or woman who hates cannot love anyone properly and rejects herself or himself out of society. Hatred is psychotic and leads, sooner or later, to murder and death.

TOTALLY RIDICULOUS CLIMAX!!.......2006-06-14
Do not read any further if you don't want to know the climax of this inferior thriller. Gwyneth Paltrow quickly recovering (after hours of intense natural childbirth labor!!!!!) to go to the garage and find the evidence that Jessica Lange killed her husband and having the strength to belt Lange in the process and looking downright none the worse for wear to boot was totally unbelievable and implausible. There is no way in real life that this could have occurred! It takes days for a woman who has undergone natural childbirth to get back on her feet, yet Paltrow is presented as though it was as easy as getting a good night's rest and getting up feeling refreshed, full of vim and vigor!! Total nonsense. The performances of the principals, mostly Lange and Paltrow make up for the implausibilities of the script. Nina Foch does a dandy turn as the granmother but the scene where Lange turns up the cold water in her steam bath is also unbelievable. In the next scene Foch is revealed to be fine and happy....no pneumonia, no after effects .....nothing!! This film was one big disappointment and I give it two stars for the acting because the story is pure fluff. All the actors deserve better here!! No wonder this film was a "hush" at the box-office....it came and went quickly and I can understand why.
from the chronicles of the clothespin.......2006-02-28
one of the best movies since a perfect murder yet out of the ages of time here comes another hit for jessica lange.. she was crazy here but it was a very hilarious movie...a definite MUST SEE!!!!!
No one leaves Martha!.......2006-02-14
I liked the film for it's intense conclution that just had me so anxious it wasn't funny...but there are some distracting elements, the main one being that everyone except Gwenyth's charactor seems to be really stupid. I mean, the fact that no one catches on that Jessica Lange is freaking insane is poposterous. I love my mother, but I can even attest to times when she's crazy, never this crazy thank god, but this guy thinks his mother is a saint when clearly she has way to many screws loose. So heres my word of advise. Watch it at least once, it's worth that for the final confrontation (and the baby's delivery which is just heartwrenching) and then decide for yourself how you feel. I was just so frustrated half the time that no one saw what was so obvious that it took away from the real terror of the film. Jessica Lange plays a great psycho and Gwenyth does good as the distraught wife of a mommies-boy.

Frank Sinatra was among the producers for X-15, an interesting space-race film that marked the feature debut of Richard Donner (the Lethal Weapon series, Timeline) and provided an early lead role for Charles Bronson, who leads a solid cast in this occasionally tense, hardware-driven drama. Bronson, David McLean, and Ralph Taeger are test pilots for the X-15 research vehicle, which brought man to the brink of outer space for the first time. The film divides its running time between scenes of the crew testing the rocket and domestic drama involving their wives and girlfriends (played by Mary Tyler Moore, Patricia Owens, and Lizabeth Hush). James Stewart's narration offers an all-American layer to the script, written by James Ward Bellah (whose stories were adapted by John Ford for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Sergeant Rutledge, among others) and producer Tony Lazzarino. Eagle-eyed fans might notice future California congressman Robert Dornan among the ground crew. MGM's widescreen DVD offers no extras. --Paul Gaita

Slow suicide...........2005-11-27
What a piece of garbage...Amazon should immediately refund everyone's money and then bring legal action againest whomever is resposible for this abomination of a DVD. Did no one attempt to watch this prior to it's release? Probably did and were promptly bored to death....Lynn Stubblefield, Nashville, TN...btw, one star because there is no way to leave them all blank...
none.......2005-09-03
I really enjoyed this movie. It was very entertaining. The actores were great. Having first hand knowlege of the X-15 project, Ihought it was fairly accuarte.
The lazy way to put out an old film.......2004-08-18
"dhoggan" is right on the money. This is the lazy way to release an old film. Nothing could have been easier than to have re-worked this film in a full-frame version with the NASA footage sections returned to their original dimensions, which are naturally full-frame. You'd think it would have been a breeze with the available technology and software. Instead of being able to advertise a newly restored version that's better than the original theatrical release ever was, they end up with a DVD that's getting pathetic reviews and which isn't likely to sell. Sales from the corrected version would surely have offset the cost of the easy re-working of the film. The problem here lies with whoever is responsible for marketing this stuff. Come on MGM - you're supposed to be better than this. How about actually THINKING first.
MGM DVD doesn't help this turkey either..........2004-07-20
Dick Donner's directorial debut is about as far from auspicious as you want to get and is no way evocative of the successes he would enjoy in later years with the likes of Superman and the Lethal Weapon series. This maudlin, mysoginist, cliche-ridden old-school melodrama is further marred by aspect ratio problems that have been explained sufficiently by other reviewers, so I won't get into that here--but what adds insult to injury is MGM DVD's hack mastering job. The studio didn't even bother to optimize the film for 16.9 televisions, which partially would have allowed viewers with 1.33 TVs to compensate for the aspect ratio problem by making an adjustment in their DVD player's display settings. Furthermore, with today's digital technology it would have been easy enough to correct the aspect ratio problem in a post house by either adjusting the stock footage to 2.35:1 by zooming in on it, or remastering the whole film at 16.9 by slicing off the edges of the footage that Donner shot. I would have preferred the latter approach as it would have sacrificed very little in terms of picture fidelity, and if this were a worthwhile film, I'd rip the DVD to my hard drive and do the scaling myself in Adobe AfterEffects. But, alas, I have a life and will leave this pursuit to only the most die-hard purists out there. Bottom line, MGM need to get a clue in regards to consistently formatting their legacy releases to 16.9, a practice they have yet to adapt. All they need to do is walk into any Good Guys store and notice that the vast majority of large TVs now take advantage of the wider aspect ratio.
The worst in my collection.......2004-02-27
As an aviation enthusiast, and particularly the X-15, I eagerly awaited the DVD to come out. I went over it in less than 2 minutes. The important scenes, the NASA footage, are so badly stretched beyond recognition, that I will keep my VHS copy from TV broadcast as my main copy, at least the plane sequences were ok there. Terribly disappointing.
Will have to wait until spacecraft-films will release their documentary on the X-15 (announced since last year). Shame on you, MGM !

Studio Classics - That's Entertainment.......2007-07-04
No - Studio Classics are not the great musicals of MGM, but it is a group of great movies from Hollywood. All but four of the movies are Oscar winners in a major category and four best picture winners. You need to like the black and white movies of the late 30's into the 40's and the All-Star color classics of the 50's. Not certain I'd call this a "collection," since it is a pretty eclectic group of movies, but a treasure chest of viewing pleasure for those that can watch a great movie again and again. Bring on the popcorn!
A good collection of movies from 1937-1969.......2007-01-27
The previous reviewer asked an excellent question - Why part with all of that money if you don't even know what films are included? So, I looked it up and here's the list:
In Old Chicago (1937), Nominated Best Picture, won Best Supporting Actress
Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938), Nominated for Best Picture
The Rains Came (1939), Stars Myrna Loy in an OK sentimental disaster film.
The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Nominated Best Picture, in AFI top 100 Films.
The Mark of Zorro (1940), Stars Tyrone Power in title role.
How Green Was My Valley (1941), Won Best Picture
The Black Swan (1942), Tyrone Power & Maureen O'Hara in a pirate film.
Orchestra Wives (1942), Stars Glenn Miller and his band.
The Ox-Bow Incident(1943), Nominated for Best Picture starring Henry Fonda.
The Song of Bernadette (1943), Nominated for Best Picture, won Best Actress.
The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), Gregory Peck nominated for Best Actor
Leave Her to Heaven (1945), Melodrama with Cornell Wilde & Gene Tierney
Anna and the King of Siam (1946), Rex Harrison in non-musical version of "The King and I".
My Darling Clementine (1946), John Ford, who actually knew Wyatt Earp, directs Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp.
The Razor's Edge (1946), nominated for Best Picture.
Gentleman's Agreement (1947), - Won best picture, direction, supporting actress (Celeste Holm).
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Gene Tierney as a widow plus Rex Harrison as the ghost she falls in love with.
The Snake Pit (1948), Nominated for best picture, stars Olivia DeHaviland as a mental patient.
A Letter to Three Wives (1949), nominated for Best Picture. 1 of 3 husbands has left his wife - but which one?
All About Eve (1950), Won Best Picture, helped revive Bette Davis' career
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), A terrific early sci-fi film
Titanic (1953), stars Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck as a feuding couple aboard the doomed ship.
Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), Nominated best picture
Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955), Nominated best picture
Anastasia (1956), Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress as the amnesiac heiress to the Russian throne.
The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956), Gregory Peck as a businessman trying to balance his career and home life.
An Affair to Remember (1957), Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr in a great romance
Desk Set (1957), One of Tracy & Hepburn's better films.
The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Best Actress award for Joanne Woodward as a woman with three personalities.
Peyton Place (1957),classic melodrama and Nominated Best Picture
The River's Edge (1957, An OK Western/film noir combo.
The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958),stars Ingrid Bergman as a missionary in China.
The Best of Everything (1959), 1950's view of the world of secretaries. Joan Crawford as an evil boss.
The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), Nominated Best Picture, won 3 others.
Return to Peyton Place (1961), a mediocre sequel to the original.
Zorba the Greek (1964), Nominated Best Picture, stars Anthony Quinn.
Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), Bette Davis in a great bizarre tale.
How to Steal a Million (1966), classic 60's comedy with Peter O'Toole & Audrey Hepburn.
Two for the Road (1967), Nominated for best screenplay, great love story told in flashbacks.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), Best Actress for Maggie Smith as a schoolteacher with unconventional ideas.
All in all, this is a good collection of 40 critically acclaimed and award-winning films from the years 1937-1969 that continue to be popular. They encompass all genres, and I count only two real clunkers among them - "Return to Peyton Place" and "The Rains Came". There are a lot of Academy Award winners among them - and I'm not talking just Best Song or Best Cinematography either. I counted 15 nominations for best picture, and a few actually won the top award. With the price heavily discounted as it is, it works out to six dollars per classic movie, which is a pretty good deal.
My impression is that this is just a DVD bundle, not a collector's edition of any kind. Thus I would not anticipate any extras other than those that are already on the included individual DVD's containing the movies themselves.
What is this?.......2007-01-20
You would think for five hundred and fifty five dollars there would at least be a list of the movies included!!

Warning: Drink a Lot of Caffiene Before Watching.......2004-12-13
The 2001 Japanese film "Hush!", directed by Ryosuke Hashiguchi, is a slow and not particularly interesting film about a recently-involved gay couple that meet a single woman who wants to have a child. The woman, Asako Fujikura (Reiko Kataoka), lives alone, works as a dental technician and tends to be a bit promiscuous and depressed. While eating in a restaurant, she overhears a conversation between the gay couple Naoya Hase (Kazuya Takahashi) and Katsuhiro Kurita (Seiichi Tanabe). Naoya works in a pet store and is rather open about himself, but Katsuhiro works in a lab and does not want any of his coworkers or anyone else to know that he is gay. After visiting a doctor and recommending surgery for a female problem, Asako tracks down Katsuhiro at his job to return an umbrella to him (that he had previously given to her outside of the restaurant) and to ask him whether he would be willing to father a child for her. It is around this same time that one of Katsuhiro's female coworkers becomes obsessed him.
This film literally put me to sleep after about an hour and I had no further interest in watching it through to the end as it is extremely slow and the characters are uninspiring. Granted, the cinematography is very good, Reiko Kataoka won two Japanese film awards and Seiichi Tanabe won one Japanese film award; but the film simply fails to be sufficiently interesting to watch its entire 135 minutes. Consequently, I can only rate "Hush!" with 2 out of 5 stars for its boredom. Some people clearly do enjoy this film, but I am not one of them. Other characters in this film include Asako's father (Minori Terada), Naoya's mother (Manami Fuji), Katsuhiro's brother Shoji (Ken Mitsuishi), Emi Nagata (Tsugumi) and the gynecologist (Ryo Iwamatsu).
Hush!.......2004-07-04
It surprised me actually that I liked this film as much as I did. It seems a bit long, but nothing unbearable. Interesting, evocative and occasionally amusing: all a round it's a very good movie. It's actually quite similar to Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet (also very good), except Japan is the setting here and Hush! is also a bit darker (as most Japanese films are).
The story mainly revolves around three characters: Katsuhiro, a gay man quietly living and working in a predominately straight world; Asako, a solemn & tattered women working as a lab tech. in a dental office; and Naoya, Katsuhiro's eventual lover who's far more out and about with his life, and a fond lover of animals. While sitting by herself in a local restaurant, Asako eavesdrops on part of the conversation between Katsuhiro and Naoya, who were also eating there. They were talking about being (not so) openly gay and their (mostly Katsuhiro's) feelings about fatherhood. As Asako begins to leave the restaurant she finds that someone has stolen her umbrella (and it's raining rather hard outside). Being ignored by management, she eventually leaves angered and upset. Katsuhiro, who noticed the whole ordeal, gives her his company umbrella as he and Naoya leave the restaurant behind her. Asako ultimately tracks down Katsuhiro at his job to return the umbrella that he had given to her. The two start to converse and she eventually asks him if he would father a child with her (through artificial insemination). After some time he agrees. The obvious struggles then begin with Naoya taken aback on the whole idea at first, but other complications also keep the film very interesting: such as a female co-worker of Katsuhiro who grows insatiably obsessed with him; Naoya's charismatic and outspoken mother; and Katsuhiro's sister-in-law who disdainfully censures Asako after delving into her past... Assortments of other things also keep away any tediousness as well.
Personally, I thought the film was great; but if you're homophobic or have a low-attention span, then this film may not be for you. If you're open-minded and like semi-sentimental stories, then this one's an excellent choice :).

Superb Performance by Diane Ladd.......2005-07-08
.
The day 25-year-old Susan Nolan, who was adopted soon after birth by loving parents, meets her biological mother Edie (played by Diane Ladd) she thinks she has found the one thing that is missing from her life. She is dead wrong!
Edy has spent a goodly part of her adult life in a mental institution, where she was placed by a judge for allegedly endangering her child, a fact she does not reveal to Susan.
Diane Ladd's performance in this is blood-curdling, yet heart-wrenching, thriller is superb! The other actors also give superb performances. The writer-editor deserves a Best Story award. The director deserves a Best Director award. The producer deserves a Best Producer award. Had this film been produced by The Hollywood Film Kingdom instead of by Canadians, it no doubt would have taken many Academy Awards and Diane Ladd might have won Best Actresss of the year.

A Drama & Thriller In One!.......2004-05-11
A woman is reunited with her biological mother after she was taken by child-protective services when she was little. Her mother was suffering from postpartum psychosis and supposedly put her into a bathtub of scalding hot water. After all these years, her mother is still psycho. She meets her daughter's lifelong foster parents, husband, son and new-born baby. As she tries to bond with her daughter, extreme rage and jealousy builds up inside of her towards the foster parents. And when her anti-psychotic medication runs out, she goes on a violent and sociopathic rampage against the family. It gets to the point where she plans on completly destroying every person in her daughter's life so they can start over, just the two of them. Her daughter realizes what she's up to when the bitch tries to kill the baby. The same way she did before, a bathtub full of steaming, scalding water. It turns into a shocking, heartpounding turmoil between the mother and daughter which leads to emotional pain, violence, and certain death.
A very good movie.......2000-05-30
The story line for the movie is very good and convincing and the acting by every character was believable and sincere.
