Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon

Description

One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?!.......2007-06-30

Nothing that happens in this movie makes any sense. It's just a big f***ing ball of bulls***t. If you must watch it, I advise drinking heavily first.

p.s. I thought Conan O'Brien did pretty well as the autistic man who marries the hot blonde. WHOOPS, hope I didn't spoil any surprises.

p.p.s. The douche that Kiera K meets in the beginning? They get married too. SURPRISE!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Skip the Movie; Read the Book!.......2007-06-29

I count "Pride and Prejudice" among my top-three favorite books...ever. So, I was really looking forward to this cinematic version of it. I was sorely disappointed. In all fairness, two hours just can't do justice to this wonderful novel, but this movie didn't even scratch the surface. And Keira Knightley as Lizzy? Didn't quite work for me. I say don't waste your money. The book is cheaper and will afford you greater hours upon hours of pleasure. I dare say, you'll want to read it again, which is more than I can say about viewing this film.

5 out of 5 stars Even the purist likes it..........2007-06-28

Although I believed the A&E version could never be replaced in my heart due to its true-to-the-book writing, this is a wonderful sweetened condensed version and sparks a great romantic chord. Though I still adore the A&E version and would recommend it to anyone who's never read the book or is, like myself, a purist, this is a great little flick.

5 out of 5 stars Will they get together?!.......2007-06-27

I love it! It doesn't go into as much detail as the first Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996) ,then again that was five hours long, and some of the best scences weren't even in the book but whats wrong with that. There are some fantastic scences, spectacular scenery, and Pride and Prejudice is one of the few movies where you are worried if they are really going to get together so it keeps you attention the entire time Knightly plays Elizabeth beautifully and Matthew Macfadyen is the perfect Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice definitly didn't recieve the explosure it deserved.

5 out of 5 stars A breathtaking tale to watch again and again.......2007-06-25

I have not read the book - so I am reviewing based solely on my enjoyment of the film for its own sake. It is a lovely, whimsical, romantic tale that can be enjoyed many times over. I appreciated the refreshing lack of profanity, crudity, and senseless violence that floods today's movies.

Beautiful scenary, well acted - thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend this!

Ranked 34 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Films, To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made. A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter (racism in the Depression-era South) and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance, justice, integrity, and loving, responsible parenthood. It's tempting to call this an important "message" movie that should be required viewing for children and adults alike, but this riveting courtroom drama is anything but stodgy or pedantic. As Atticus Finch, the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two, Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man (Brock Peters) wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman. While his children, Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Philip Alford), learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred, they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious, mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall, in his brilliant, almost completely nonverbal screen debut). What emerges from this evocative, exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lee's enduring novel, a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film, and a rare quality of humanitarian artistry (including Horton Foote's splendid screenplay and Elmer Bernstein's outstanding score) that seems all but lost in the chaotic morass of modern cinema. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars One Fantastic Flick.......2007-06-19

This has got to me, in my opinion, the best movie ever made. It takes me back to my childhood. It's poignant, hard-hitting, real and inevitably sad. Life used to be like this.

5 out of 5 stars Ban both book and movie from all schools.......2007-06-16

Why ban them? Then, we might be spared what is possibly the most infantile, ignorant and uninformed collection of negative reviews present on Amazon.

I originally intended to post a review a few weeks ago after I had viewed it on cable, but for some reason I decided to read the negative views (both book and movie) to see why in the world anyone could condemn either. Afterwards, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I decided to laugh, but with an undertone of sadness.

A few examples of the absurd negative comments follow (with my own comments in parenthesis):

"Every copy of this book should be burned and never allowed to be read again." (Ah, the sweet smell of scorched paper around the bonfires. Armbands optional?)

"Yuk! Try to avoid reading this book as much as possible. . . . [I]t is confusing . . . and there is too much information given at one time." (You had me at "Yuk!")

"Thanks to all my friendswho had to tourchure threw reading this disgrace and supporting me in not likeing the book. By the way, DO NOT BUY, because if i find it in your house i won't think to kindly of you." (I tremble in terror and weep in shame at what you would think of my bookshelves.)

"Talk about a bad movie i would only buy it if someone paid me twice it's value to." (I don't think this is what was meant by the "new math.")

And, my favorite: "Do not watch, do not read ... stay ignorant of Harper Lee." (I suspect, young reader, that you have succeeded far beyond Harper Lee.)

Sorry to review the reviews, but now I actually have something serious to say about the movie and book.

Years before the publication of Harper Lee's novel, there was a trial in a small southern Mississippi town in 1945. A black man named Willie McGee was accused of the rape of a white woman. The circumstantial evidence pointed strongly to the possibility that the relationship was forced by the woman. Just as in "To Kill a Mockingbird," such a relationship at the time could not - would not - be tolerated. The case attracted national attention at the time, and after a prolonged series of appeals (spearheaded by former New York Congresswoman, Bella Abzug), a public execution was staged, which was no more than a legally sanctioned lynching. The state's portable electric chair was installed in the courthouse, which was filled to standing room only. Outside spectators climbed trees to gain a look at the execution through the opened windows. (A white Mississippi attorney, Dixon Pyles, also took part in the defense, so Atticus Finch is not without a foundation in fact.)

The Scottsboro trials have been cited as the main inspiration for Lee's novel, but I've often wondered if the McGee trial might not also have played a role. But it really doesn't matter. Fiction is often more suited to tell the truth than history. And the truth is that although many people in the South knew Jim Crow laws and lynchings were wrong, they also knew that if you were vocal about it, you could lose your job - or your life, which is what makes the portrait of Atticus Finch a true profile in courage, a Southern Gothic version of Sir Thomas Moore in "A Man For All Seasons."

But beyond the racial themes, both the book and the movie weave a gentle tapestry of what life in the South was like before air-conditioning, where games were things to be played outdoors rather than in front of computers, a discarded tire was an endlessly renewable resource for entertainment and summers seemed to last forever. (I've lived what I'm talking about.)

What saddens me about the negative reviews such as I quoted above is not their ignorance, but the lack of curiosity they display about our nation's history. I do, however, fervently hope that the young reviewer who urged the burning of all copies of the book is oblivious of the historical events he or she evoked and will someday realize the horror of what such comments endorse.

Ten stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD and appropriate additional features.......2007-06-13

This DVD provides clear images and speech. In addition to the complete motion picture, there are a question and answer session by Gregory Peck (Atticus Finch), an interview with the adult Mary Badham (Scout Finch), and other offerings.

5 out of 5 stars What more can be said?.......2007-05-26

What can really be written about this wonderful film that hasn't already been said since its release on December 25th 1962?

One can write that this has to be one of Gregory Peck's greatest performances portraying the memorable Atticus Finch with such believability that Peck attempted time and again to shed "Atticus" as an actor, even as an established one for twenty years, asking for "villain" roles and being turned down until The Boys From Brazil, Atticus Finch was a role made for Gregory Peck as the actor can play the sensitive, caring man of integrity with utter ease and did so for several films following To Kill a Mockingbird, such as "Behold a Pale Horse" (1964) "Mirage" (1965) and "Arabesque" (1966).

Harper Lee's novel addresses many issues for its time including racism and entrenched prejudice against the black American in the deep south before and during The Great Depression and after...as an audience of the film, we are exposed to the necessity of pursuing virtue as human beings and what it really means and how important it is to have basic good manners in one's life; what it means to reach for and practice goodness and have core beliefs and in the end, standing firm by those beliefs against overwhelming opposition. The film also shows us the need to walk a mile in another person's shoes before making any judgements on them, or as Atticus says to Scout... "Until you step inside their skin and walk around a little..."

The magnificent performance of Mary Badham as the irrepressible Scout won her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress only to miss out to Patty Duke in her stunning role in The Miracle Worker Considering both performances, Duke and Badham (both children) should have won a Joint Oscar as both were absolutely magnificent in their respective roles.

When the Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee was published, a somewhat recent bio of the author, Lee was asked about the character, Atticus Finch, and was he based on her actual attorney father, she said that Atticus of course was based on her father, but she embellished and added, creating a new character, a father and man she believed would be the ideal father & human being living under the circumstances presented in the novel.

Despite this film opening forty years ago, the story and performances continue to be a model for present day filmmaking...beginning with a great story, a well adapted screenplay, a director who loves the project thus all in the crew give 100%, and the same basic example of virtue and integrity communicated in the novel and adapted for the screen: compassion, kindness, courage, respect and love.

Truly one of the all time great films of the twentieth century...something to show the children, something to learn.

A Bright 5 Stars.

Bernard Slade's smart, funny, and touching play about an adulterous couple who meet one weekend a year for 26 years is nicely adapted for the screen by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) in this 1978 film. The two-person story stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, both of whom are outstanding at conveying a rainbow of emotions over a quarter-century as life gives and takes away, and the world convulses with change. Mulligan brings taste and honesty to the film, and Alda and Burstyn give full, living performances. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Passionate ..and funny.......2007-05-26

Loved the historic timeline as backdrop to this movie.Alan Alda was perfect for this role! Wish it could be updated to the present time. The title song always gives me tingles....

5 out of 5 stars LIKE A GOOD WINE - BETTER WITH AGE.......2007-05-14

My wife and I celebrate our 30th anniversary of marriage this year and remember this movie fondly from almost 30 years ago. We both agreed that every aspect of the movie seemed better than when we viewed it last. The story was easier to follow, the humour seemed more ironic and the music exceeded my expectations in it's placement within the movie. I was left wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars A classic romance.......2007-05-13

Witty, philosophical, and an unlikely affair that happens once a year ... over decades. Delightful and sometimes a little painful. Ultimately, a classic romance (so now you know the ending).

4 out of 5 stars Heritage House, Mendocino.......2007-05-07

I bought this video to view before we visited the inn where it all happens: Heritage House in Mendocino, CA. As we drove up the coast, we talked about the movie, the moral issues, the actors, and it gave us so much to talk about, we almost missed the view of the Pacific! Just a little dated, but Alan Alda is so magnificent in this that you can put
aside your critic's pen and just enjoy. His performance should have brought him an Oscar.

5 out of 5 stars terrific romantic comedy.............2007-05-06

Doris (Ellen Burstyn) is a young housewife who has a chance encounter with George Peters (Alan Alda), at a country bed and breakfast. Though married to others, the two have an instant connection and mutual attraction. Though, both of them are devoted to their spouses and children, they agree to meet at the same time and place, year in and year out. As their 26 year love affair progresses, their conversations reflect the evolution of United States politics and social issues.

This film is funny, insightful and witty. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn have wonderful screen chemistry. They are very believable and are a joy to watch, as they celebrate one another's joyous ups and comfort each other at their darkest hours in life. Really great!

Director Karen Moncrieff has created short vignettes to show how one murder can affect a plethora of people both related and unrelated to the victim, in her chilling feature, The Dead Girl. The film unfolds with quiet repose, like a series of photographs, as the viewer learns from various points of view how Krista (Brittany Murphy) was murdered, and by whom. Opening with the most disparately related segments, the viewer meets Arden (Toni Colette), slave to her abusive mother (Piper Laurie). Arden, full of hatred that manifests as self-mutilation, is equally scarred by her discovery of Krista's body. Next, we witness Krista's grad-student sister, who, with her knowledge of forensics, combs cadavers for physical clues to find her missing sister's body. The second half of the film is more affecting, with better pacing and more pointed plot, since one sees the motivations behind the serial killer's crime, and later, Krista's mother's devotion to solving the mystery. As the victim's mother meets Krista's old friend, Ashley, and discovers the she left a daughter behind as legacy, there is a sense of rebirth that feels satisfyingly redemptive. The Dead Girl's cinematography reinforces the pervading melancholy so completely that the film itself begins to symbolically represent Krista's dead body. --Trinie Dalton

Product Description

The life of a lonesome caretaker (Toni Collette) is turned upside down when she stumbles upon the body of a murdered girl. This discovery may provide closure for a forensics graduate student (Rose Byrne) whose sister went missing when she was a child. A housewife (Mary Beth Hurt) Makes a disturbing connection between the body and her own husband (Nick Searcy) which leads her to take dark and decisive action. A mother (Marcia Gay Harden) desperately searches for answers about her runaway daughter s life and finds answers in one of her troubled young friend (Kerry Washington). A volatile young woman (Brittany Murphy) goes on an odyssey to get a birthday present to her little girl. Together, these stories paint a devastating portrait of seven women whose lives are linked by a single act of violence and a desire for change.

4 out of 5 stars the dead girl.......2007-07-03

I'll admit that I only bought this movie because James Franco was in it. I do enjoy his looks, but he is a strong actor that has intrigued me over the years. That being said, his part wasn't the biggest, nor was it the best. He did the best he could with the part given, but his segment (the movie is divided into 5 segments) was mainly focused on Rose Byrne's story. She gives an excellent performance, likely the best in the film.

The 4 remaining performances, all centered on women, are held together by strong female performances. I found Toni Collette's part to be the most emotionally touching, and Brittany Murphy does a good job as well. She was a bit over indulgent at times, but I have always admired her acting skills. This movie was no exception.

Overall, the movie was pretty depressing. The story was moving and engrossed me, but I can't say that I would recommend it unless you are a die hard fan of one of the actors. The plot is interesting, but the acting is the real story.

5 out of 5 stars Great underrated film........2007-06-29

Picked up this movie because of the known actors, had no idea what it was about whatsoever. Just like everyone else's review you have five different stories that all revolve around the dead girl. This movie has excellent acting, depressing stories and overall brilliant ideas. I could see some people not wanting to watch a depressing movie but this one was right up my alley. I would say that everyone I know would love this movie. I haven't seen Crash yet but I hear this is similar as far editing and I hear Crash is a great film. I you're into movies that have multiple stories going on try 'Go' or most Tarentino films. This film is not for minors due to nudity, violance, drugs etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great acting but slightly flawed.......2007-06-25

It's weird to figure out where this film hooked me in to watch it. Normally I like more independent films but sometimes there just so awful and "boy-are-we-smart" attitudes that you feel like the more you roll your eyes, the more they'll pop out of your sockets. "The Dead Girl" is one of those kind of films where it really shouldn't work and yet everything fits right but not quite enough. There's nothing inherently wrong with the story but it's like performing a long piano piece and hit 2 bad notes, it's like "argh, so close!"

The movie opens with Arden (Toni Collette) discovering the body of a young girl, Krista (Brittany Murphy) dead in a field. Krista's mother (Marcia Gay Harden) is in town trying to find her as well as finding out some surprising news. A body believed to be Krista's is found by a morgue assistant (Rose Byrne) who's been looking for her sister for years. Krista's killer is slowly being found out by his wife (Mary Beth Hurt).

There's different segments to the film and they're all played one at a time so it doesn't suffer that Crash format of having everyone somehow passing by each other. While the characters are all connected, it's not presented in this sort of implausible fashion that really only Robert Altman films can pull off. However, that means that each segment relies on the strength of where it is in the running order and how well done it is. For example, the "Sister" segment centering on Byrne is definately my favorite yet the previous segment, "the Stranger" which focuses on Collette is kind of boring.

The acting though is by-and-large excellent. There's some that are surprising (I always found Rose Byrne underrated yet nobody listens to me) while some are just obvious standouts such as Toni Collette but she's always good. Strangely, the one weak link is the titular character played by Brittany Murphy. Of course, the whole idea of a drugged out/messed up girl doesn't seem like a stretch but sometimes she's almost all over the place, being quietly reflective and subtle than she turns on the hysterics and kind of goes overboard. Sure she avoids the Sean Penn style of overacting but it's kind of distracting. The other I felt was James Franco as the lab assistant who gets involved with Byrne. He didn't feel like someone she should find comfort in since he almost seems more like someone who'd rather keep her in his bed than be a friend.

It's probably not a film for everyone. While the indie crowd would love it, it's one of those out of the way films where you'd almost have to overexplain what the whole thing's about. It's best a film you discover on your own or word of mouth and whether it interests you than some guy saying it's "best movie of the year!".

3 out of 5 stars Great Potential, But..........2007-06-25

I eagerly anticipated watching this movie, and for most of its duration, it lived up to its billing.
It jolts you from the start when a lonely caregiver stumbles upon the gruesome corpse of a young woman. The movie has segments which describe other women who are, in some way, linked to the victim. These segments are well-acted, poignant, but brief perspectives of each woman's life, and for a moment this looks like it might become one of the truly great movies of recent years. And then the end sort of leaves you hanging, and wondering. It feels as if the characters are seeking closure, and yet closure is not something you think of when the movie is over.
This is the movie's only real flaw, though. It is beautifully scripted, written, and acted. Ah, if only...

1 out of 5 stars Vile, all too Vile, all too stooopid.......2007-06-24

That's N-i-e-t-z-s-c-h-e, and what he wrote bears no relation to this movie.

In this stinker, all the men seem like predators, or are unappealing at best, all the women are victims. If this is reality--the reality of L.A. or anywhere, I want no part of it. In my experience, people from most classes have some kind of spark or charm. This is a film that mistakes vileness and vapid, blank suffering for profundity or realism.

Watch them suffer! On second thought, don't! The most unappealing group of people I've ever fast-forwarded through in recent memory--even worse than The Hawk is Dying.

I like dark films--but this is just rub yer nose in it vile and stupid.

Avoid at all costs! Yech!

Hanging out at an Italian villa with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida sounds like a painless way to kill a vacation--and Come September is a pretty painless movie, too. Rock is a millionaire who spends a month at his home on the Riviera every year, except this year he's come early and surprised his staff, who've been running the place as a paying hotel. This is one of those comedies of sexual frustration--Rock can't get alone with Gina, because the "hotel" is overrun with American teenagers (chief among them Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, who married after meeting on the shoot). The plot is labored, and director Robert Mulligan shows little feel for farce (he would shortly hit his stride with To Kill a Mockingbird). At least the location shooting has a nice summer breeze to it, and Darin sings "Multiplication" in a nightclub, complete with hepcat moves. --Robert Horton

Product Description

Rock Hudson stars with the ravishing Gina Lollobrigida in a racy, romantic romp (Motion Picture Herald) set on the breathtaking Italian Riviera.

Every September, this successful New York businessman (Hudson) visits his Italian villa to relax and to romance his Roman girlfriend (Lollobrigida). But after arriving unannounced one July day, he s in for a huge surprise! During his absence, the luxurious home has become a hotel. What s more, the current guest list accommodates a gaggle of American girls with persistent boys pinning after them. In a desperate attempt to regain control, Hudson manages to lose his privacy, his girlfriend and his mind until he comes up with a plan of his own.

This is the film in which Bobby Darin not only makes his feature debut, but also ends up marrying his lovely co-star, Sandra Dee, just ten days after filming wrapped. Come September also features beautiful camerawork by Greta Garbo s favorite cinematographer, William Davis, with designer Morton Haack creating Ms. Lollobrigida s exquisite gowns.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Comedy, and Deservedly So.......2007-02-08

Once upon a time a fabulous group of actors got together to star in a frothy comedy set in the Italian Riviera: Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin, Walter Zlezak, Brenda De Banzie, Joel Grey. It was 1960, in America we were dreaming of Camelot, and in sunny Italy a new prosperity was making life easier for most people. Those were, indeed, happier days. I look at this film with tremendous nostalgia. Everything in it is just about perfect. Rock reveals his gift for comedy in a very natural, spontaneous way. Gina is absolutely stunning: a perfect beauty, an ideal woman. The locations used for the film, at Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, are breathtaking. A film I always go back to. This is a world I would like to inhabit.

I had heard that 'Come September' was a great movie, but I couldn't find it anywhere in town. [I live in Anchorage, AK, so it's kind of a quandry as to why I couldn't find it.] Anyhow, I found it on here, it was delivered quickly, and I loved it! It's one of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen.

A classic movie offering. Enjoy Bobby Darins screen debut with future wife Sandra Dee. Rock Hudson and Gina Lollabrigida make a fine couple as a counterpoint. Many laughs, some singing and romantic moments make this a good pick. Don't wait for September, see it now.

Scenery was fabulous; makes one want to travel the coast of Italy right away! A Romantic Comedy much like so many other 1960's Romantic Comedies: innocent & kind of screwball at the same time. Women are always dressed just so, and the leading men always handsome. Nice movie to watch after a long day!

A jewel of a sleeper, The Man in the Moon comes off as a nearly perfect short story of two sisters' first competition in the field of love. In a 1950's small Louisiana farm town, 14-year-old Dani falls for Court, a 17-year-old engaging neighbor boy. The two become great friends, but Court is more interested in Dani's 17-year-old sister, Maureen, who is blossoming. Dani will look for any justification why she should be with Court, but as human law dictates, there is no cure for a 14-year-old with a crush.

The film is another winning portrayal of small-town adolescence from Robert Mulligan (To Kill A Mockingbird). His eye for casting is impeccable, with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper as the earnest parents and newcomer Jason London as the dreamy Court. The real find, though, is Reese Witherspoon as Dani. Her timeless work here is magical. The PG-13 rating is a bit heavy-handed--although the film does not shy away from its look at budding sensuality, or a horrific and emotional accident. Mature 10-year-olds may find one of their favorite films here. --Doug Thomas

Description

Oscar(r) nominees* Sam Waterston and Tess Harper and veteran actress Gail Strickland (Norma Rae) join three talented newcomers in this deeply moving film (Los Angeles Times) about coming of age and sexual discovery in rural, 1950s Louisiana. Brilliantly directed by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Summer of 42), The Man in the Moon is a poignant and bittersweet tale Roger Ebert calls a wonderful movie...a victory...a meticulously prepared masterpiece. Fourteen-year-old Dani (Reese Witherspoon) and her older sister Maureen (Emily Warfield) have always shared everything. This movie was a joy to watch. NO nudity, NO bad language, just a simple story line about a family, a real family, and how they handle life. I have seen this movie more than once and will probably see it again.

Absolutely excellent movie about a teenage kid (Reese W) who falls in love with a boy 3 years older who in turn falls for Reese's older sister, the acting is superb and Reese shows us in her debut movie what we have seen for many years now - that she is a great actress. this is a film for all ages that everyone can identify with - the teenage crush and subsequent heartbreak when things go wrong. the screenplay is exceptional and director Mulligan keeps the film interesting at all times.

Disney does Dickens in this animated version of Oliver Twist, in which a homeless New York City cat falls in with a bunch of mischievous dogs under the leadership of the appealing scoundrel Fagin. The roots of Disney's success with animation in the '90s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Lyricist Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid) worked on the songs, the best of which is sung by Billy Joel, who provides the voice of (the Artful) Dodger. --Tom Keogh

Description

A timeless classic inspired by Charles Dickens' novel "Oliver Twist," OLIVER & COMPANY is a fun-filled, action-packed musical adventure voiced and sung by one of the most talented casts in Disney history! And now you can own this Disney masterpiece on DVD! The film artfully blends lovable characters, cool songs, and action-packed adventure into a contemporary classic that's "charming, funny, musical, and thrilling!" (ABC-TV) Disney's hip, high-energy tale begins in the concrete canyons of New York City, where Oliver, an adorable orphaned kitten, is befriended by Dodger, a carefree mutt with a certain street savoir faire. The mischievous little cat is welcomed by Dodger's pack of pickpocket pooches, including dim-witted Einstein, ravishing Rita, and live-wire Tito. This ragtag family of misfits runs into trouble when the evil mastermind Sykes -- aided by his two daunting dobermans -- schemes to kidnap the lonely little rich girl who just adopted Oliver! It's up to the brave kitten and his newfound friends to race to the rescue in an electrifying chase through the city's subway system. Boasting five outstanding original songs and the musical talents of Billy Joel, Bette Midler, and Huey Lewis -- and overflowing with brilliant animation, OLIVER & COMPANY is a modern masterpiece.

great movie . great price and as always great service . keep up the good work

4 out of 5 stars Great family oriented fun, but not one of Disney's absolute greatest........2007-04-26

First of all, It's great movie. It has catchy songs, lovable charecters, and finely portrayed setting. The plot was a little questionable, particularly at the end. Stuff happens that really just doesn't make sense, such as a car getting it's tires scraped off from subway rails and having the exposed wheels ride on the rails perfectly. Also the antagonist is a little too evil. Now you might say, "he's the antagonist, he's supposed to be evil!" but seriously, the way he over-reacts to the smallest of things is just downright corny. For example: grabbing his gun before greeting a pizza delivery person just because he didn't order it.

Those are the negative aspects, but I'm sure any kid below the age of 13 isn't even going care about those. The rest of the movie leading up to the end is a great Disney classic.

4 out of 5 stars Great characters.......2006-12-27

If I could, I would rate this film 3.5 stars. It was okay. Not as good as other Disney movies, but okay. However, the characters were great. I personally liked Tito and Francis best. Georgette was also great. Tito was a spunky, fearless chihuaha (I know that's spelled wrong) and Francis was an intelligent-talking dog with a taste for high-class items. Then Georgette was an egomaniacal ("Perfection is Me") pampered poodle whom is also hilarious.

As for the other characters, they were good, too. The homeless guy, Fegin, was okay, just kind of pathetic. I didn't like the part when he wrote that ransom note and lied to Jenny about finding Oliver. It just didn't seem . . . right for a "good" guy to do.

The movie as a whole? Well, like I said, not as good as the other Disney movies, but it defintely has something going for it: great, rememberable characters.

5 out of 5 stars Cute Movie.......2006-11-21

I watched this movie when I was a kid. It's really good. It's one of Disney Production's best. Oliver is a cat when he is all alone in the little cat orphaniage box. He is the only one left alone at night. Cries, then the rain ruins the box and Oliver almost lands in the sewer. He then hangs out with Dodger to find a better life and possibly find a human owner.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Movie Inspired by Oliver Twist.......2006-11-14

The Charles Dickens book "Oliver Twist" was the inspiration for this book. There have been many adaptations of "Oliver Twist," and I found this one to be humorous and enjoyable. The movie is a bit scary in some places, but otherwise should be suitable for most family members.

Oliver (voice by Joseph Lawrence) is an abandoned kitten in New York City. Oliver stumbles about until he encounters worldly dog Dodger (voiced by singer Billy Joel). Dodger lives a carefree life with pals Tito (voiced by Cheech Marin), Einstein (voiced by Richard Mulligan), and other dogs. Initially Oliver believes that Dodger's world is a good place to be, but all the stray dogs work with Fagin (voiced by Dom DeLuise), and Fagin owes Sykes (menacingly voiced by Robert Loggia) money. Sykes has very affirmative methods of getting what he wants. Those methods include effective application of violence.

Jenny (voiced by Natalie Gregory) adopts Oliver and it seems as though Oliver's life is going to get better. Unfortunately, Jenny's dog Georgette (voiced by Bette Midler) is not prepared to allow Oliver to take any attention away from her, so she plots to get Oliver out of the house. Fagin captures Oliver and holds Oliver for ransom. When Jenny shows up with her piggy bank, Sykes steps in and grabs Jenny, holding her for ransom from her wealthy parents. The excitement is intense as we learn whether the dogs are able to defeat Sykes and return Jenny to her home.

This movie is rated G, but there are some dark scenes in this movie. I suggest the movie is suitable for most children down to the age of four or five years, but younger children may find some of the scenes disturbing or too intense. Most other members of the family should find this movie fun to watch.

This movie is kept from being too dark by a series of funny scenes. There are also songs and dancing. This movie shares some similarities to "The Lady and the Tramp." If you enjoyed that movie, you should enjoy this one. This movie is a favorite of younger children, and most adults should find it interesting as well.

Enjoy!

This was light romantic comedy in the mid-80's that is a hidden gem. Imagine having to teach someone how to be cool and win over girls and the pearly gates open? That is one divine assignment that seems really hard for some and a piece of cake for others. The Heavenly Kid is one to watch when you want a movie you don't have to think too much about.
