Although it's been three years since we last saw Bridget (Renée Zellweger), only a few weeks have passed in her world. She is, as you'll remember, no longer a "singleton," having snagged stuffy but gallant Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at the end of the 2001 film. Now she's fallen deeply in love and out of her neurotic mind with paranoia: Is Mark cheating on her with that slim, bright young thing from the law office? Will the reappearance of dashing cad Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) further spell the end of her self-confidence when they're shoved off to Thailand together for a TV travel story? If such questions also seem pressing to you, this sequel will be fairly painless, but you shouldn't expect anything fresh. Director Beeban Kidron and her screenwriters--all four of them!--are content to sink matters into slapstick, with chunky Zellweger (who's unflatteringly photographed) the literal butt of all jokes. Though the star still has her charms, and some of Bridget's social gaffes are amusing, the film is mired in low comedy--a sequence in a Thai women's prison is more offensive than outrageous--with only Grant's rakish mischief to pull it out of the swamp. --Steve Wiecking

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, and more excellent.......2007-06-27

The movie arrived on time, there were no scratches, I definitely got more than my money's worth, especially since I got this at such a good low price, AND I absolutely LOVE this movie, so everything was just EXCELLENT!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-05

What can I say? If you liked the first one, you'll love this one! This movie exceeded my expectations. Still haven't convinced my boyfriend to watch it with me, even though it's funny as s**t.

2 out of 5 stars "The Edge" Is Right, More Like "Way Over The Edge".......2007-04-13

What happened? Everything that was great about the first movie went terribly wrong in this one. The first Bridget Jones film was centered on Bridget and Mark Darcy "finding" each other, sorting out their misconceptions, and ultimately falling in love. It is a modern re-telling of the core plot of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice: Girl meets guy at party, guy makes disparaging remark to girl, girl spends majority of film (and miniseries) disliking guy, is briefly deceived by villain (Daniel Cleaver, or in the case of P&P, Mr. Wickham), and eventually realizes guy is truly her perfect match. And to top it all off, girl and guy share passionate kiss at the end of the film (and the miniseries). Great formula, right? And then came the second movie...

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is supposed to depict the aftermath, or the "happily ever after" that in this case turns out not to go so "happily." Bridget and Mark Darcy have already been together for a while at the start of the film, but all of the chemistry that they had in the first film is completely gone. They seem almost estranged. Mark Darcy is just as icy as he was in the first film, only now that he's got the girl, there's no excuse for it. It just makes him seem closed off. Bridget is even more insecure than she was in the first film and gets into even more scrapes, only they don't seem as funny this time around. Instead of making her feel more secure, her relationship with Mark Darcy appears to have had the opposite effect. She comes off more as a train wreck than as a delightfully accident prone single girl. Even in their more intimate moments, they don't really seem like a couple (the ski slope scene in which Bridget realizes that she might be pregnant due to "all the weeks of uninterrupted sex they've had" begs the question, "When, exactly?"). I watched the film thinking, "How did these two get together?"

And then there's the plot. Gone are the hilarious conversations between Bridget and her friends in the pub, and gone is the subplot involving Bridget's parents. The parents are hardly featured in this film, and the friends only sporadically. Instead, we have Shazzer, Jed, cocaine, Thailand, way too much on-screen time with Daniel Cleaver, and a beautiful young lawyer who turns out to be a lesbian in love with Bridget. Huh? It's like one of those films where they just throw everything in together and take whatever emerges from the mess. To make it even worse, the mood of the film is inconsistent. It starts off attempting to be funny, then gets very dark after Bridget is imprisoned in Thailand on drug charges. All of a sudden we've gone from comedy to drama, then back to comedy after she is released. The film is a roller coaster, and in more ways than one.

Overall, it is simply a bad sequel, as so many other sequels have been before it. Stick to the first movie. At least you'll still have the "promise" that something great will happen.

5 out of 5 stars could watch it over and over again.......2007-03-24

This movie is good but would like to have the alternative scenes put in to make the movie a little darker. It would make the ending that much more sweeter.

2 out of 5 stars Unworthy Follow-Up.......2007-03-18

The neuroses and insecurities displayed by the Bridget Jones character were charming when she was lonely and single in the first movie. Now that she is involved in a loving relationship, these same characteristics make her seem controlling, desperate, and sad. It is much harder to like Bridget in this movie or to feel sympathy for or identify with her.

And her one-dimensional friends from the first movie are downright annoying in this sequel. They seem to exist solely to focus their attention on Bridget, and they prove over and over again in this film that they don't even have her best interests at heart.

If you were a fan of the first, you may want to steer clear of this one. Or at least go in with tempered expectations.

    Description

Jimmy Smits heads an all-star cast in this fast-pace romantic drama about medical students trying to meet the demands of love, ambition and competition. As they enter their third year of medical school, a group of young students prepare to leave the world of textbooks for the halls of a real hospital. Somehow, they must impress the chief of Surgery (Smits) while learning how to survive the life-and-death area of medicine and the complexity of their everyday lives.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars From "Vital Signs" to "Greys Anatomy".......2006-04-07

"Vital Signs" is a high adrenalin drama focussing on the lives of first year Surgical Residents at a large metropolitan hospital. The TV series "St. Elsewhere" together with "Vital Signs" may have set the tone for TV series such as "ER" and "Chicago Hope", but "Vital Signs" most certainly has set the tone for "Grey's Anatomy". Jimmy Smits turns every character he plays into a golden moment. His role in this film, as mentor to the young doctors, is no exception. If you love "Grey's Anatomy", you'll really appreciate "Vital Signs".

3 out of 5 stars A movie to remind you why "ER" was such an impressive TV show.......2005-09-14

If it were not for the fact that there is a brief nude scene involving Diane Lane, you could well think that "Vital Signs" is a filed television pilot. But this 1990 theatrical film, which predates "ER" but might remind you more of "Grey's Anatomy" since it focuses on a group of third year medical students going through their rotations at a hospital. Dr. David Redding (Jimmy Smits) is the "dean" and head of surgery, and the main focus of the drama is the contest between Michael Chatham (Adrian Pasdar), the son of a famous surgeon (William Devane), and Kenny Rose (Jack Gwaltney), who is married to Lauren (Laura San Giacomo), but is too busy competing with Chatham for the big internship prize to give her even ten minutes to catch a quick meal together.

Other students in the mix are Gina Wyler (Diane Lane), who finds Chatham to be more sympathetic than Dr. Donald Ballentine (Bradley Whitford), and Bobby Hayes (Tim Ransom) and Suzanne Maloney (Jane Adams), who end up being closer than mere study buddies and are not sure what to do about it. Otherwise the students encounter your standard med school problems: a patient who dies for no apparent reason, fainting at the sight of blood, opening up a patient to find their condition is inoperable, and having a superior fail to listen to you when you know you are right.

Director Marisa Silver had worked on "L.A. Law," which might explain why Jimmy Smits signed on to do the film even though he is playing a supporting role to all of the young doctor wannabes. "Vital Signs" is okay, but given what we have seen on television since 1990 it just seems so pedestrian in terms of what happens. For those of us who were used to watching Victor Ehrlich train under Dr. Mark Craig on "St. Elsewhere" these young doctors have it so easy and it just seems so strange to see a theatrical movie that is so much tamer than network television. Being a cleaner version of "Gross Anatomy" is not a strong recommendation and you will find yourself being more impressed by "ER" no matter how far it has fallen from its once lofty perch. The acting is competent enough, but "Vital Signs" is also hurt by an intrusive musical score that is used to pump some life into scenes. More often than not the effort is counterproductive because you stop and realize what limitations in the film the music is trying to gloss over.

3 out of 5 stars Been there, done that..........2005-07-08

Made in 1990, Vital Signs still carries residual of the `80s with its cheesy soundtrack. The film follows the trials and tribulations of several third year medical students as they compete for limited internships and to do so they have to earn enough honour grades.

Vital Signs is an ensemble piece a la St. Elsewhere and, later, E.R. but without the former's quality writing and the latter's adrenaline-fueled pacing. In fact, Vital Signs feels like a feature-length TV show in the way it is paced and structured. The cast is fine if not somewhat bland, with the likes Adrian Pasdar (the nondescript protagonist in Near Dark) and Diane Lane (window dressing in The Cotton Club) who are given very little to work with. Pasdar is appealing enough with his hunky, all-American looks. He plays the kind of brash, young upstart that Tom Cruise was known for (Top Gun, Color of Money, etc.). Lane is as gorgeous-looking as ever and I'm sure many of her fans would certainly like to have her as their doctor...that is until she sends a little boy into cardiac arrest and dies (albeit accidentally). The chemistry between them is pretty good. However, their characters, as written, never transcend their stereotypes or the conventional situations that they find themselves in.

Vital Signs is a little too earnest but does have its heart in the right place, it just doesn't do anything to distinguish itself from countless other medical comedy/dramas on the big and small screen.

4 out of 5 stars Very good movie about medical students.......2005-07-04

Very well taken movie that depicts the sacrifices and passion required for medical profession. Background score goes very well with the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced entertaining look at med school.......1999-01-10

Adrian Pasdar and Diane Lane stand out as the med students who fall in love. The rest of the cast is just as talented and the majority of characters are three-dimensional (except the "bad guy"). This is an interesting look into the lives of med students: their duties, relationships with their patients and each other, their angst, ethical worries, and the political system within the medical community. There are enough plots and subplots to keep one's interest the entire time. There is never a dull moment and it turns out to be a fun movie and a well-written one also. One of my favorite movies of all time.

And this movie slipped under the wires. It is a good movie...and proving to me that anything Joshua Leonard is in will be worth a look. It has creepy moments...and twists along the way...but it is all easy to follow. I would have enjoyed seeing more of the head nurse act...she was off the wall! Smiling a Joshua one moment...glaring and moving her eyes to your eye level the next in a stern stare down like a snake.

Red herring driven, the plot will keep you entertained. And guessing as to who or what is killing the staff......

5 out of 5 stars what happens when Identity and Silence of the Lambs meets..........2006-08-13

This movie was on my list of possible psychological thrillers for me to buy for quite a while now. I'm not sure what made me pause. Maybe it was the perfectly fantastic Session 9 that kept me from it. I figured that no other movie of it's type could possibly chill me quite as much. With the release of House of Voices recently as well as Boo, I figured hey, why not, I'll try madhouse. This movie is clever, scary and intensely riveting. You never truly know whether there really is a malevolent force at work possibly possessing a resident of the facility or if it's just some nut in general. There are plenty of suspects and lots of gruesome imagery both imagined and real. The boy "ghost" who continues to pop up is sure to raise the hairs on your arm as will the scene at the end when we learn the truth of the patient in that room in the basement. Like The Sixth Sense, clues abound everywhere and you don't really understand that they were clues until the end. Why this movie wasn't released in theaters is beyond me. Madhouse is a truly worthy addition to any genre fan's collection of twisted, psychopathic movies. And the door to a sequel is wide open at the end. More PLEASE!

    4 out of 5 stars Never trust a schizophrenic....ever...............2006-06-06

I believe horror fans will love this one. It centers around a student who is interning at a mental hospital, with a jaded past.
From the first second, this movie pulls you in with a violent collage of brutal images. It follows our main character, as he tries to unlock the mysteries of this asylum.
Once he meets the strange prisioner in the basement, things go from normal to crazy real quickly. The casting in this movie wasn't the best, but the characters WERE well written. Overall, I had fun watching it, and the violence is top-notch.
    Great movie for horror fans.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad..............2006-04-01

I can surely say that I've seen alot of horror movies that were alot worse than this one. This one wasn't bad. I liked the creepy mental institution, the creepy mental patients and the cool gory scenes! The acting wasn't bad either. At least I didn't want to shut the movie off halfway through like I have with other horror movies. With a surprise twist ending, this is a good movie to watch for horror fans. It will keep you interested throughout the movie. Worth seeing and at least renting.

4 out of 5 stars William Butler-- one of the best up-and-coming directors........2006-01-03

    [brief plot synopsis]
Clark (Joshua Leonard) is a young and idealistic new intern at a run-down and out-dated mental health facility. His aspirations for cleaning the place hit a snag when he butts heads with Dr. Franks (Lance Henrikson) who seems to not mind that the patients never seem to get any better. Shortly Clark begins seeing things and death and mayhem invade the reality of the "Madhouse". Together Clark and Sara must uncover who or what it is that stalks the asylum and survive the massacre.

    [good things]
Nicely directed, some pretty good kills, and a good story. The directing was superb, and it gave us some nice visual experiences, great cinematography, and all around tight scenery. There weren't many kills in this, but the ones it showed were pretty brutal and bloody. I also liked the cast, alot of good actors, and alot of very seasoned veterans (Lance Henrickson and Leslie Jordan).

    [the bad]
It was hard for me to believe that an asylum like this existed. I don't see alot of this happening in real life, and I guess it is a horror film and they don't really have to mirror reality. I would have also liked more kills. While the script wasn't at all unique, but nicely done and directed, it was almost obvious who the killer was.

    [final thoughts]
I may be playing favorites with this because William Butler is a friend, but it is a damn good movie. The all around feel to this movie is pretty cold and eerie. Joshua Leonard (from Blair Witch Project) delivers a great performance that almost makes me forget about his role (as himself) in The Blair Witch Project. Each character was nicely done and scripted. Even though the script could have taken a few different turns and made the story a bit harder to figure out, I still feel this is one of the better movies to be released in 2004.

David Mamet's hit play from the 1970s has made it to the screen with its grim humor intact. The story of a robbery that never actually happens, the three-character drama focuses on a set of small-timers looking for a big score: Donny (Dennis Franz), who runs a junk shop; his jittery young assistant, Bobby (Sean Nelson); and Teach (Dustin Hoffman), a card-playing pal of Donny's with a nose for a shifty deal. Donny has accidentally sold a rare buffalo-head nickel to a customer not realizing what it's worth, and so he and Bobby are planning to steal it back--and Teach wants a piece of the job. Mamet's trademark testosterone-fueled jabber is less about crime than about the ways men talk to--and at--each other. Hoffman is grungily appealing as a guy who always goes a step too far, while Franz brings a quiet power to his role as a man who always knows more than he says. --Marshall Fine

    Description

Two-time Academy AwardÂ(r) winner* Dustin Hoffman and two-time Emmy winner Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue") deliver tour-de-force performances as volatile small-time hustlers in this edgy, electrifying story of trust, betrayal and loyalty gone dangerously awry. American Buffalo is a riveting study in human virtue and vulnerability from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Mamet (Wag the Dog, The Edge, The Untouchables) and director Michael Corrente. For down-and-out junk dealer Don (Franz), life goes from unlucky to unbearable when he discovers that the rare, buffalo head nickel he just sold for $90 is worth ten times as much! Refusing to let himself beout-swindled, Don enlists the help of a young protÃ(c)gÃ(c) (Sean Nelson) in a scheme to steal the coin back. But their plans are suddenly altered by the intrusion of Teach (Hoffman), a disturbingly aggressive would-be thief who badgers Don into cutting him in on the heista decision that carries explosive consequences for everyone involved. *1988: Actor, Rain Man; 1979: Actor, Kramer vs. Kramer

I worked at thr YMCA in Pawtucket, R.I.,where this was filmed, and was fortunate to see alot of the shooting! One scene was filmed directly outside the YMCA's doors! Met Dennis Franz....what a nice guy! Met the director also....he too was quite congenial.Saw Hoffman, but could not get too close to him...Not like the bear hug, and joking around I enjoyed with Dennis Franz! I liked the movie for perhaps sentimental reasons...and also the young male actor in it was quite good, as well as of course Hoffman, and Franz...but could have done without some elements that were "overdone" i.e. swearing. It is a pretty decent film on the whole. The three actors seemed to work very well together, and I noticed, enjoyed goofing around with each other off-set!

4 out of 5 stars Hoffman Shines In This Small-Scale Mamet Adaptation.......2006-01-19

This came and went with nary a peep back in '96, but it deserved more attention than it got. Adaptations of David Mamet's work are not for everyone, I realize, but at least in this case the playwright did the adapting himself. Hoffman is a treat as Teach, a small-time hood who is all talk and very little action. The entire film is essentially a three-person, one-set ensemble piece, but Hoffman, Dennis Franz, and the young Sean Nelson pull it off. Franz wisely chose to underplay his role as Donny, who listens semi-patiently to all of Teach's endless bluster, and Michael Corrente's direction is mostly successful in keeping the film from feeling too stagey.

Since I have a lot of friends in the theatre business I'm always assailed by Mamet films (whether directed by him or just film adaptations of his plays) whenever I get together with them to watch a movie. Although there are a few Mamet films I enjoy, most of his film offerings are perfect examples of bourgeois cinema.

The director of American Buffalo might as well have had the actors perform the movie on a stage and filmed it like he would a play; the movie felt like a play. Mamet's dialogue might work in the theatre but in the world of film it is contrived at best and seems designed so that the intelligentsia can pat themselves on the back by chortling at the right spots. A.B. is Mamet at his most pretentious and merely proves that lovers of the playwright will sit through his self-congratulatory ... and try to read an insight into his material in order to prove to themselves that they haven't been deceived--that good old David is some witty commentator on society.

But he is not. Mamet is merely the decadent mouthpiece of bourgeois society and American Buffalo, like most of his films, offer no real societal critique and are intelligent only in the way a first year philosophy student in love with Nietzsche is intelligent. The man should stick to writing for the stage since theatre--the perfect medium for pretentious bourgeois art--is the last bastion for pretentious artists like Mamet.

    2 out of 5 stars Worth A Look.......2006-06-26

I first saw this movie in 1970, the year it was released. Recently, I saw it again on DVD, and unless my memory is slipping, I think there might have been something left out. It involves the scene on the beach, where the young nurse, played by Barbara Leigh, is tripping on acid. When I saw the movie the first time, I remember she showed pubic hair. I could be wrong because it has been thirty six years, but I don't think I am mistaken. It was one of the highlights of the film. How could I forget that? On the DVD, no pubic hair is shown. Why it would be edited out of an obvious T&A flick is beyond me. Luckily, another scene is left intact. It is a bedroom scene. The nurse, played by Karen Carlson, gets out of bed and walks to the other side of the room. We gat a nice, big view of her bare behind. You can also see a side view of her left breast and also a touch of pubic hair. There are a few more bare breast scenes throughout the film. As for the plot, or plots, the movie is fairly interesting. The acting though, if you want to call it that, is so unbelievably bad, it is almost laughable. Nevertheless, it is a fairly entertaing piece of campiness. If you are looking for a little bit of late 60's, early 70's nostalgia, sprinkled with some nice T&A, this film is worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Film for Retro-seekers.......2005-08-25

I am a fan of Scottie MacGregor, who is also known as Katherine MacGregor who played "Mrs. Oleson" on "Little House on the Prairie" so when I found out that she was in this film as the Nurses' Instructor "Miss Boswell," I had to buy it and was it ever worth it!!!
The color, direction, music, and sound are terrific and the nurses are very attractive. Though the plot is a little weak, it still gives a wonderful introduction for women who wish to show their independence and liberation from the roles of homemaker and telephone operator. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is interested in the late 1960s and early '70s, you'll truly enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Not your average sexy nurse movie!.......2005-08-12

It is almost hard to even equate this film, the first of a series of "Nurse" films produced by Roger Corman in the early to mid-70s, with those that followed. Each film has some appeal to it, but the following films in every case fail to live up to the surprisingly high standard set by this first underrated classic of 70s cinema. Although the film contains all the sex and nudity one would come to expect (and look forward to) in any Corman production, director Stephanie Rothman (never heard of her? believe it or not, she is one of the most prolific female directors in the history of American Cinema despite having only around a dozen films to her credit)handles sex maturely, and in a show-me-yours-I'll-show-you-mine style that never fails to make equal eye candy of the attractive male cast members.

Like many filmmakers that started out in the boot camp of New World pictures and/or AIP (Scorsese, Demme, Howard, Coppolla - bet you've heard of THEM!), Rothman strives to meet her nudity and violence quota amidst a framework sporting pertinent social issues such as racial tension, drugs, abortion, and women in the workforce, and succeeds mightily. The film is serious, but never fails to entertain. The cast is undeniably attractive, and likeable. And the visions of LA circa 1970 are worth the price of admission in and of themselves.

My friend described the film as "a kind of Medium Cool with women," and I'd say that may not be too far off the mark. It is a real shame that Rothman wasn't able to expand into more mainstream features. She had a great eye, and a great knack for expressing humanity on the screen.

4 out of 5 stars Very entertaining with talented cast........2003-10-29

The first of Roger Corman's 'Nurse' films. The print is crystal clear and the sound excellent. The film stars the talented Elaine Giftos as Nurse Sharon Armitage, Karen Carlson as Phred Stella, Brioni Farrell as Lynn Verdugo and Barbara Leigh as Priscilla Kovac. The four likeable leads are supported well by Darrell Larson, Reni Santoni, Richard Rust and Lawrence Casey.
Listen carefully to the voice of the psychiatrist Ronald Gans, whose voice has been heard on many trailers over the years.
The music is good and the locations well chosen. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars "Like prostitution, journalism is learned on the streets.".......2006-05-28

The Peruvian film, "Tinta Roja" follows the trials and tribulations of a journalism student, Alfonso (Giovanni Ciccia), when he is assigned as an intern to a tacky tabloid called "Le Clamor." While Alfonso wants to cover shows, instead that assignment falls to his attractive competitor, Nadia (Lucia Jimenez), and Alfonso finds himself unwillingly assigned to cover police stories. The newspaper editor's philosophy is that the stories should entertain--rather than teach--the reader, and so in order to succeed, Alfonso quickly learns to toss aside all sense of journalistic ethics and chase the latest police event, and this includes suicides, car accidents, rapes, etc.

Alfonso becomes the fourth man on the police story team. Van Gogh (Carlos Gassols) is the driver who continually quotes famous sayings in an attempt to bring a sense of philosophy to the random world of crime. Escalona (Fele Martinez) is the predatory photographer, but it's the wily Faundez (Gianfranco Brero)--a man who has no sense of shame when it comes to getting a headline--who heads the team. Faundez's motto is to get to the scene, take the grisliest photos possible, and then round up the nearest relative of the victim and exploit them while they're emotionally vulnerable. While Alfonso is at first horrified by this sort of behaviour, he's soon under the influence of his new mentor, Faundez, and he quickly finds himself chasing and embellishing the tawdriest stories with gusto.

"Tinta Roja" is a very lively, colourful film, with plenty of dark humour, and its strong characters practically leap off the screen. After a very entertaining beginning, the film sags a little in the middle, but manages to recoup by the conclusion. "Tinta Roja" is based on the novel by Alberto Fuguet, and is directed by Francisco J. Lombardi. In Spanish with English subtitles--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars Reporting on the Reporting Media in Peru.......2004-04-26

TINTA ROJA (Red Ink) is an excellent adaptation of Alberto Fuguet's novel by the same name that explores the world of tabloid journalism in Lima, Peru. Fuguet, himself a journalist as well as a brilliant Chilean novelist ("The Movies of My Life" etc), has provided an earthy story of a young writer Alfonso (Giovanni Ciccia) who longs to write novels, but sees, as his only entrance in to the writing arena, the job offered to him as a journalist following crime stories for a dingy tabloid edited by Faundez (Gianfranco Brero), a man with questionable scruples and secrets of his own. His philosophy : "News, like prostitution, is learned on the streets." And so our nascent reporter accompanies his boss to sites of murders, suicides, accidents, the drug scene, etc in the violent city of Lima, Peru. He is accompanied by a photographer Escalona (Fele Martinez) who captures the lurid details of the stories Alfonso attempts to stomach. Their driver is Van Gogh (Carlos Gassols, who all but steals this film!) who communicates in quotations both sensitively and hilariously from an international resource of famous people! Attempting to undercut Alfonso's reportage is Roxane (Yvonne Frayssinet), a seductive radio reporter who mingles with our staff in a humorous way. The love interest is provided by Nadia (Lucia Jimenez). The story builds in momentum until our idealistic hero finds himself swallowed up in the yellow journalism and smarmy lies and deceit that produces, only to find his way out with the discovery of his own dark genealogy and the help of his new friends.

Fuguet's stories are not easy to watch (or read,) as he is unafraid of the underbelly of society. But despite the somewhat excessive depiction of violence and gore, this movie makes its point very well. The pacing is excellent, the acting is excellent, and the ending makes the journey worthwhile. Director Francisco Lombardi is the only major Peruvian director
finding access to the international scene and he is a talent to watch.

This film, listed among Mexican movies, is actually a Peruvian film directed by Francisco Lombardi (who also directed "Captain Pantoja and the Special Service", "The Lyon's Den", "Fallen from Heaven", etc). Ths particular release is based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Alberto Fuguet. It deals with tabloid journalism, following the changes of a young journalism student who is an intern at the newspaper.

Dominique Swain, best known as Lolita in the 1998 Adrian Lyne remake and the knife-wielding daughter in Face-Off, shows off her gift for romantic comedy in this lightweight little confection. Interning at glossy fashion magazine "Skirt," her inexperienced but plucky and charming Jocelyn jumps at the often outlandish commands of her editors and nurses a crush on the magazine's assistant art director (Ben Pullen) while waiting for her big break, specifically a paying position. The high-strung editorial staff includes Joan Rivers (who barks up a storm with new ideas on wheelchair chic), Peggy Lipton, Kathy Griffin, Anna Thompson, and Paulina Porizkova as a former model who can't shake her starvation diet. "She had an apple two days ago," someone comments after she faints. "That can't be it," nods another.

The ostensible plot involves industrial espionage and the campaign to flush out "the Yuri," a spy sending all their upcoming ideas to arch-rival Vogue that Jocelyn vows to uncover, but that's just another complication in the wacky world of haute couture. Crammed with insider jokes, industry potshots, and an army of cameos only fashion devotees will recognize, from Diane von Fürstenberg to Tommy Hilfiger (for the rest of us there's Gwyneth Paltrow for a few brief seconds), it's an old fashioned romantic comedy with a new wardrobe. It's Swain's engaging performance and Michael Lange's genial direction that mellow the caustic barbs and invest it with a sense of heart. --Sean Axmaker

    2 out of 5 stars Fashionably Bad.......2005-09-28

I won't claim that this is the worst movie ever although many would award it at least a honorable mention. I watched this because "Dominique Swain" is one of the stars; she is the only one associated with this thing who has actually been able to find real work in the industry since its release. This was her first real career stumble and she probably wishes now that she had used an assumed name and worn a mask.

Imagine film students Leah and Vincenzo from the cable show "Film School" (The Tisch School of the Acts at NYU) collaborating on a feature length pseudo-documentary as their class project. They talk Swain into going with them to a New York City fashion magazine office for a couple of days. They tell the office staff that everyone has won a free week of acting for the camera lessons. They get another $10,000 from Parker and Jennifer to buy film (Parker's Visa card again), and reuse their script from 1999 when they made the unwatchable (and fortunately unwatched) "Fashionably LA".

Apparently the objective of the screenplay is to show the "real world" of fashion modeling through the eyes of an intern. The intern is played nicely by Swain who manages to inject some wry humor into many of her scenes and to somehow restrain herself from totally overwhelming the inexperienced cast around her (hence two stars instead of one).

The problem is that the premise, "blowing the lid off the fashion magazine scene", is of interest only to insiders who already know everything the film is about to reveal. Which is pretty much the same with any vocation. What next, a movie that "blows the lid off the Cincinnati CPA scene"?

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

    3 out of 5 stars Give It A Break.......2005-01-23

Bad reviews abound for this straight-to-video feature - lot's of ugly sniping about the fashion business, gay stereotypes, superficiality, etc. But, please, let's get real here. Not every movie has to have deep subtext and meaning - especially not movies about the fashion business. Written and executive produced by Jill Kopelman, (daughter of the owner of the House of Chanel) and Caroline Doyle, the inside jokes and cameos run rampant in a movie that just misses being very clever. With a dreary romantic comedy subplot, Dominique Swain, most notable for *Lolita*, plays Jocelyn, an intern at *Skirt* magazine, who becomes involved in fashion espionage. A very thin premise, to be sure, with a John Waters-ish feel to it, but with a breathless E! TV approach to fashion and comedy. Also like a John Waters film, *Intern* depends heavily on onscreen slapstick and cameo performances- though since it's not John Waters, of course, we miss seeing Patty Hearst. Peggy Lipton is a pleasant surprise as Fashion Editor, Roxanne Rochet, a typical fashion victim, given to such statements as "Forget the herbal wrap - I want a Himalayan rejuvenation lichen-berry acid peel." She and her staff are complete caricatures of fashionistas (they are devoting nine pages of their current issue to making wheelchairs the chic accessory), but they are right on the money - especially Leilani Bishop as the vacuous, self-absorbed supermodel, and David Deblinger as the queeny art director. Paulina Porizkova, Anna Thompson, and comedienne Kathy Griffin are a little one-dimensional, but funny as well. Joan Rivers is Joan Rivers, and that's all we need to say about that. As stated earlier, it's not a particularly deep movie, but to paraphrase Karl Lagerfeld, fashion is not the same thing as feeding the hungry and curing the ill.

    5 out of 5 stars its cute.......2003-07-31

I don't know what everyone is on about, that this movie is bad. Ok, it may only be for a limited crowd-fashion people and people who follow that world, but I thought it was really cute.
Dominique Swain plays the "pathetic lowly intern" really well, and Ben Pullen as the love interest is really cute. They play well together.
The supporting cast is exactly the sort of people I'd expect to find at a fashion magazine. Considering some of the divas present in fashion, those people seem to underplay. Severely.
I'd say to the critics-give this movie another chance. Its not Citizen Kane. Maybe Citizen Kane for the fashion set.

    4 out of 5 stars Fashion funny!!.......2002-10-22

I'm not a big Dominique Swain fan, so I can't really comment on the other reviews about this not being her best performance. In fact, this movie really shouldn't be considered a "Classic," but if you like fashion and are interested in the fashion industry, I think you'll find this movie very funny.

I loved the cameos by Gwenyth Paltrow, Kevyn Aucoin, Kenneth Cole, etc. I thought the movie was to be taken tongue-in-cheek. It isn't rocket science, it's fashion!! The plot is about a young woman working at a fashion magazine (Skirt Magazine) as an intern. While she is there, it is discovered that there is a "Yuri" (a spy leaking insider info to their competitor, Vogue Magazine).

If you love fashion as much as I do and are looking for a fun, no brainer movie to watch, I recommend The Intern.

A couple of days ago I ordered Anatomy 2 off amazon.com. I had seen the movie in stores, but they wanted too much money for it. So I went to the trusty amazon.com, and ordered it. I got it 2day on the mail, and I popped in the movie. Within mintues, I was hooked into the movie. This movie has so much twists and turns in the movie, you would think that u would be on a roller coaster. It's so wonderfully done. I loved this movie, and I would recommended this to anyone who likes horror/action flicks. And I think that doctors will love this type of movie. The only backback is is that u cant watch the movie in english, since the movie was made in Germany. But if u can get past that barrier and don't mind subtitles, then your in for a treat.

    **1/2

From Dr. Frankenstein to Dr. Mengele, Germany has developed quite a reputation for...hmm.. how shall we put it?..."unconventional" men of science.

It's appropriate, then, that the German film "Anatomy 2" should be a brave-new-world sci-fi thriller that deals with the issues of biomedical ethics and just how far science should be allowed to go in trying to "improve" on Mother Nature.

Professor Muller-LaRousse is a world famous neurosurgeon who has been covertly conducting questionable experiments, implanting synthetic muscles into perfectly healthy young men and women (who also happen to be his devoted interns). Even though a disturbing number of these "guinea pigs" have died as a result of the procedures, LaRousse forges on, undeterred and undaunted, convinced - as any mad scientist worth his salt would be - that scientific advancement cannot be allowed to run aground on the shoals of a few trivial dead bodies. His plan is to create some sort of "master race" of invincible semi-humans. Jo Hauser is a promising young doctor who has come to Berlin to work and study under LaRousse, confident that he will be able to make a real difference not only in the lives of others but particularly in the life of his younger brother who has fallen victim to a degenerative neurological disorder. Filled with idealism, Jo allows himself to be pulled into LaRousse's group of sycophantic acolytes, perhaps to his everlasting regret.

The film is obviously intended as a modern day allegory of Nazism - what with its emphasis on group-think, unethical medical experimentation and talk about creating a "master race" - but the movie feels just too much like other - and better - dystopian sci-fi fantasies to be very effective. The intriguing medical ethics issues are eventually shunted aside for a series of protracted action scenes overflowing with typical mad scientist malarkey and man-on-the-run cliches.

That's a shame because the movie starts off with a better-than-average premise that promises a thoughtful re-examination of an age-old theme. However, "Anatomy 2" just winds up being silly where it most desperately needs to be serious.

    1 out of 5 stars Deserves dissection.......2004-09-22

What's a wretched, unoriginal horror movie without an equally uninspired sequel? "Anatomy 2" fits the bill nicely, a vaguely grisly hodgepodge that is about as much fun as leg surgery without anesthetic. It's the same tangle of lame, derivative thriller elements, only this time it cannibalizes the first film directly.

Young medical student Jo Hauser (Barnaby Metschurat) arrives a Berlin hospital, leaving his paraplegic brother in their hometown. Professor Muller-LaRousse (Herbert Knaup) is the revered neurosurgeon who holds the reins. But he's a member of the Anti-Hippocratic Society (AAA -- an auto service?), which eschews the "do no harm" rule in favor of medical advancement. The advancement this time? Artificial muscles, which can augment any muscle in the body, and may end paralysis.

Hauser is seduced (both literally and figuratively) into joining the society, and has artificial muscles implanted in his legs. The problem is, the muscles can be controlled via computer, and the drugs involved are addictive. Then Hauser learns that he is the unwilling guinea pig for the next phase of the robotic-muscle development, where human muscles are REPLACED by robot ones.

Ever since "Run Lola Run" came out, there's been a feel that in German cinema that synth music and a sense of style are all it takes to make a hit. Unfortunately, "Anatomy" isn't style over substance -- it's all style, no substance. Writer-director Stefan Ruzowitzky has clearly lost any inspiration he may have once had -- and he never had much, since his previous "Anatomy" film was basically just a slasher fic where the slashing is done with scalpels rather than axes. "Anatomy 2" is just a rehash of a rehash.

The direction is even more bizarre this time around, including some rather kinked-up sex scenes and a clinic that looks like a medical theme park. Ruzowitzky tries hard to convince us to take his "artificial muscle" storyline seriously, but it's impossible. It's comic book science. And it isn't even GOOD comic book science -- one intern puts an artificial muscle in his penis for a little... well, you get the idea.

The characters are walking cardboard figures. Metschurat plays such a naive idiot that it's impossible to feel much real liking for him. The other characters are stereotypes -- sexy evil nurse who seduces the naive hero, evil doctor, and so on. The only semi-likable person in the whole mess is Rosie Alvarez's character, who is in love with Metschurat, but she isn't given nearly enough time onscreen.

"Anatomy 2" is one of those soulless hulks that cries out to be revived as a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 flick. Call me picky, but I don't like goofy, lifeless horror sequels.

    4 out of 5 stars a different perspective.......2004-08-18

I haven't seen the original Anatomy so I had no expectations for this movie. That being said, I really enjoyed it. It is mostly action with very little gore. The opening sequence is great but the film is best viewed as commentary on the horrible pressure doctors and interns face each day. It's an extreme example of the consequences of obsession and ambition. The message of the movie is that even the best intentions from the most caring profession can end in mayhem when taken too far.

If that doesn't convince you--- HOT GERMAN ACTORS GETTING IT ON!!!

1 out of 5 stars Awful. That's it. Like Last Year's Knee Surgery.......2004-07-03

This is supposedly the sequel to the reasonable German medical thriller "Anatomie" (2000), but apparently they didn't care the story this time, which is basically the same except for some minor points. You see again an aspiring medical student, a secret or two in a prestigious hospital, and so on and on. The director is the same person, who, it seems, is replaced by someone else somewhere behind the cutting room. And you can see Franka Potente, the original's star, for about ... er ... 8 minutes, I guess.

If you have seen the original, skip the story part, and skip the whole picture as well. There is nothing surprising about this newer film, in which, like I said, a medical student (this time, a male!) enters a medical institute, where the students and professors are engaged in some secret experiments. The film is so careless in presenting the "secrets" that you can see through everything in the opening section.

From that part, the film gets worse and worse. The film with its politically correct cast (you know, bad people are all white) is so intent on scaring or amazing us that we are allowed to see some very incredible shots, including very kinky kaleidoscopic "love scenes" and some laughably cheesy medical experiments.

The film tries to give more stress on actions, which are just risible. Imagine the cardboard characters (I mean, bad guys and good guys) running around the hospital, where patients and doctors are watching. And the good guy, being chased, didn't even think about asking for help from someone, or using cell phone to call the police! Even those TV horrors would avoid that silly situation these days.

You see the face of Franka Potente as police investigator very briefly, and that's the only place where you can remember the word, originality. Yes, she was good in the first one, and is still good even in this mess. But you have to wait for her to show up for an hour, which is way too long.
