New Car Dealer.......2007-05-29
This film would have been better if they had stuck to the topic of everyday happenings at a dealership. The stupid inner drama of murder, drugs and gangsters would be better in a Soprano episode. But if you can watch the first 45 minutes and forget the rest, some of the characters especially the sales manager will offer the viewer a funny look what a bad dealer is. Thank goodness this is not the case of today's dealers.
Somewhat intesting movie but loses direction midway........2007-05-28
This movie is an interesting but inaccurate take on the user car sales industry. The sales techniques discussed in this movie are sure to shut down any business. However, this movie has some redeeming features in terms of it being truly funny at times. I would say that the first half of this movie is quite good, the latter half which diverges from the car salesman theme is what wrecks the movie. Who needs a mini crime story inside a user car story?
So true!.......2007-05-13
This movie totally tells it like it is in the car business. A little exaggeratted but dead on. I sold cars for a while so I can totally relate. The mind games that the sales and management play with the customers to bulldoze them into the sale. Phrases like "it's only $900/month..." or "you're only looking to pay x amount a month?" trying to make it sound like it's too little of an amount no matter what amount the customer may say. If you're looking to buy a car in the near future I would highly reccomend watching this as a two hour tutorial before shopping. Mind you, not all car salespeople are like this but a decent number of them can be this way... especially used car salespeople!!!
If you sell cars, you will love this movie.......2007-05-12
I work in the car biz, and one of the older guys here recommended this movie. So I searched Amazon for it, and surely enough there it was. This is a hilarious movie. It was just like the place I work. We aren't as mean as they were, but the same hilarity occurs. I'd recommend this to anyone who works in the car biz, and even anyone who's bought a car.
A Low Rent "Glengarry Glen Ross" Devolves Into Standard Action Picture.......2006-11-14
"Suckers" is an interesting, if not very accomplished, picture about the business of selling cars. Loaded with testosterone, this movie starts out as a low rent version of "Glengarry Glen Ross" (minus the great dialogue). We see the ruthlessness and the sleaze of one particular dealership as our cutthroat salesman will do anything to close a deal for maximum profit. Much of the movie is focused on Daniel Benzali as the man in charge. He gives frequent "pep" talks and motivates his staff to be heartless, cunning, and manipulative to outwit prospective buyers. These portions of the film are definitely the most interesting, and Benzali is a forceful--if not particularly likable--presence. Her performs the same function (in much the same way) that the Alec Baldwin character did in the movie version of "Glengarry" by setting up a competitive sales competition.
Based on the dealership aspect alone, this would have been a pretty intriguing film. But "Suckers" also throws in a few more standard B-movie conventions. We've got one salesman being threatened by loansharks, another involved in the drug trade, and a couple of superfluous sex scenes for the sake of nudity. By the time we near the end, the film has lost all interest in the dealership to go out with a big confrontational shoot-out. Very standard, and not very believable.
"Suckers" is harmless enough. Probably geared more for a male audience, I can imagine some people enjoying this picture--although, for me, it's appeal was somewhat limited. KGHarris, 11/06.

Weak Drive-In Pairing - Stay Clear!.......2001-12-03
This may be the most uninteresting DVD so far in the ever-growing Something Weird catalog. Once again, a nice package and an authentic recreation of an actual double-bill...but these two movies [are bad]...(...)
First up is "Blood Suckers" which is about a young man, Patrick Mower, who has become part of a satanic vampiric cult. His friends and family are on a mission to rescue him. Eventually they do. But once back home, the man has turned a bit weird and now likes to suck blood. Patrick McNee stars and Peter Cushing is in there too. I remember renting this on VHS many years ago and it didn't leave much of an impression then. It hasn't really gotten any better, but it is watchable and has it's moments. The print used here has the pre-release title of "Freedom Seeker" on it --- now that's somthing weird.
Well, after one mediocre flick, I was looking forward to feature #2 which I had never seen (although I remember seeing photos of the monster(?) in old issues of Famous Monsters magazine....or maybe it just looks like a creature from the Outer Limits...I don't know). Well, all I got to say is I now know why the 1965 filipino horror flick BLOOD THIRST took 6 years to find a release in the US on the bottom of this double bill. Absolutely mind-numbingly dull from start to finish, this 73 minute b/w melodrama left this viewer in a comatose state. Talk talk talk, blah blah blah.... and nothing happens. And that monster mask is pretty damn fake (in the whole 1 minute of screen time you see it). This one is just plain bad....not even good for laughs.
Something Weird DVD's are usually still a good buy because of the extras included, but here's a case where even those are mediocre. We have several combo-trailers for other double features, none of them that interesting and one is incomplete. There are 2 short subjects, both somewhat banal --- one about a "horny vampire" and the other an old witch nudie short. There's the usual drive-in exploitation art gallery and it's the exact same line-up as another of a recent SW dvd release. The audio spots on it are the best thing on this disc, though, as they are hilarious "country-twang" spots from "Skyline Drive-In" in Greenville back in the 70's. This announcer is a hoot as he tries to peddle Zagnut Bars, Fanta Orange drinks and even Tab over the drive-in speaker system... He also touts their concession stand as having the best food ANYWHERE and that their concession stand is "World Famous". HAhahahahahhahaha! Also remember to get your weight and age guessed at by two beautiful women...one of them wearing a turban! Great stuff! There were some more different audio spots from this particular drive-in on another recent SW disc... they are priceless. I would rather have paid (...) for a disc just full of that stuff than these 2 mediocre movies. So a disappointing disc overall, but if you gotta see 'em all......
Borrrrrinnnnng!.......2001-11-09
Blood Suckers aka Freedom Seeker is not a vampire movie but some unidentifiable genre pic utilizing vampiric themes as well as some James Bond thrown in for good measure. This movie is kinda unwatchable, but one is pulled in by how strange and ridiculous it all is. Blood Thirst is a little better with a sexy fifties lead dude, acting all Mickey Spillane meets Frank Sinatra, is the best way to describe him. This flick was shot in the philliphines I think. This is my least favorite Something Wierd pairing, and least favorite Something Wierd DVD. I have at least half their DVD catalog.
Mind numbingly strange is what we want.......2001-10-03
Blood Suckers is a truly insane film that will make you explode with mirth at wondering 'how can something so stupid possibly exist.' Just when you think viewing this will injure you, you're rescued by gratuitous vampirism and psychedelic party depictions. Some of the shots, for example Patrick Macnee riding a donkey and an uptight Peter Cushing representing the academic elite, will bring gut laughter. As a lover of pschotronic cinema and degenerate film, I recommend this as an example of meta cinema worth checking out every so often. To some, this outing may be too much of a bad thing, but to the converted, its well worthwhile.
A "sucker" who isn't thirsty for more of this tripe!.......2001-08-01
While an ardent fan of BAD horror movies, I can think of very few complimentary remarks to make about this turgid waste of money. Aside from the ballyhoo on the cover (which I KNOW was part of the allure of the Drive-in) there is little to be entertained with these 2 yawners. The first picture BLOOD SUCKERS (which is titled FREEDOM SEEKERS on this print) is a horrid mess. It felt more like a bad episode of THE HARDY BOYS TV series. The sad thing is, this is worse! This film can't decide if its DRACULA, SHAFT or BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. (Disclaimer:If you love any of these films don't see this film) What's even more tragic is the cast! Alex Davion (remember "Ted Casablanca" in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS) plays one of the most boring action heros to be put on the screen. Patrick McNee is his usual regal self. The truly SAD casting decision in this film (as if there could be just ONE) is Peter Cushing in a most thankless role. His tears at the end of the movie seem more like remorse for having signed on for this mess! Vampire movie? You'll be greatly disappointed. There is barely a shot of a campire to be found here. Lots of comparisons to vampirism and orgasm, but who really cares. This was a waste of 80 minutes. Just when I though things HAD to get "better" in the bad movie sense of the word, along comes BLOOD THIRST! If you were confused by the first picture, just wait til this one! Filmed in the Phillipines, the story centers around an American detective summoned to Manila to help an old friend investigate a series of brutal murders. Is it a vampire? Well, even I wasn't sure at the end! We do get some fun shots of some monster with what looks like elephantitis, but even he is not much fun. What a bore! Don't waste your time or your 20 bucks!

Description
In the Underworld there is a pecking order: Kingpins, Soldiers, Players, Ballers and...Suckers. With ignorance being bliss, Joey, Tico and Evander (Danny De La Paz, Mike Boggio, and Santino Hamilton) don't realize they've been set up by their good buddies the Bravo Bros (Alfredo Ramos and Larry Durand). Thinking that the score of a lifetime is at hand, the trio head out to pull off the biggest scam the drug world has ever seen. Directed by the Sativa Brothers, Suckers is a first hand look into L.A. 's seedy side, and provides proof positive that there is a difference between being dumb and stupid.
Customer Reviews:
Ferret out the slapstick.......2007-06-16
In this low-budget, low-brow Latino yuk-fest about the bad guys vs. the good guys in the Los Angeles barrio, Weezo the ferret (played by Weezo) comes to the aid of a poor sucker (Danny De La Paz) just when he needs help the most. The movie is not about Weezo, but the charming little sable is featured in several scenes (swimming in the pool, noshing on a Mexican meal, etc.). The movie has some pretty obvious, over the top humor, but it's so likable that you just can't help but root for the hapless hero.
BROWN FACES FOR ALL RACES.......2002-03-02
American Latino movies are typically about one of three things: gangs, the barrio, or la familia. While some of these movies are great, most are pretty awful. Go to the video store and you'll see dozens of them sitting on the shelves collecting dust because Latino audiences are tired of seeing themselves portrayed through the same stereotypes over and over again. People wonder why hollywood is nervous about making modern "Latino" movies, it's because they've all been made already! Suckers is the first movie by Latinos I've seen that is about people who happen to be brown, but could just as easily be any other color. There are no references to Latino culture, family, or gangs, and I find it refreshing. And a comedy? How many Latino comedies are there? You can probably count them on one hand. While its vulgar slapstick humor isn't exactly my style, it still managed to squeeze a few laughs out of me. Suckers stands alone in a movie niche that's wide open.
THE LITTLE MOVIE THAT COULD.......2002-03-01
It's not very often we come across an underground independent film that is actually entertaining or even holds our interest. Usually these types of films are either too artsy or so low budget they're painful to watch. SUCKERS not only held my interest but had my whole family in stitches laughing! It's about three losers in the seedier side of Los Angeles looking to make a buck any way they can. But they're all so stupid in their own ways they end up getting themselves in trouble with local thugs (who I think have the funniest scenes in the movie). When I found out SUCKERS was made with almost no budget my jaw hit the floor. It turns out SUCKERS was made by a group of totally inexperienced friends from East LA who had a dream about making a movie. So in the summer of `97, after taking some basic film classes at a community college and using only the first draft of their script, they recruited anyone they knew willing to help out for free and shot SUCKERS in 15 days. With the exception of Danny De La Paz (latino film icon), all the actors and crew were first timers with zero experience. In fact, the crew and actors were the same people! (They talk about it in the DVD special features). So five years later SUCKERS finally gets released. I highly recommend this movie not only because it's hilarious, but because the underdog behind-the-scenes story is so inspiring.
Movie Miracle Must-Have!.......2002-02-27
Made for a miniscule $11,000, "Suckers" proves that dedication, creativity, and talent can turn a first-time film effort into a darling little movie. The Sativa Brothers ambitiously enter the urban latino comedy genre, untouched since "Born In East L.A." (1987), with a lovable crossover movie that ranks in the low budget arena with "Clerks" and "El Mariachi." "Suckers" is a must-have for any aspiring filmmaker and guarantees laughs to viewers who don't go to church on Sundays.
The best car movie EVER !!!!.......2002-01-27
This movie...rules. If you dont sell cars now for a living, you will be soon or you will be suing the writers of this film for the mental anguish this flick will infick on your fragile little mind.
PS As a bonus, if you are a sales manager buying this movie will boost the moral of your sales staff 150% gauranteed!

Customer Reviews:
"The salesman's job starts when the customer says no.".......2006-08-22
The film "Suckers" revolves around the Southside car dealership which is managed by tough-as-nails, Reggie (Daniel Benzali)--a man who believes that there are no limits when it comes to selling cars. Bobby Deluca (Louis Mandylor) applies for a job as a car salesman at Southside--he's had a run of bad luck, and desperately needs money. To him, the sales job isn't what he really wants, but it's necessary. Director Roger Nygard explores the racist culture at the car dealership mainly through the interactions between Reggie and his team of aggressive salesmen. Reggie leads a number of Saturday morning 'inspirational' sales meetings and dangles a $10,000 bonus out there for the top salesman of the month. These inspirational meetings are a behind-the-scenes look at some very familiar manipulative sales tactics, and anyone who's ever been on the receiving end of a hard-sell salesman will recognize some of the tactics at play in the film.
Reggie always compares the act of selling a car to the customer as a predatory sexual act. While he acknowledges that the customer really has all the control, he emphasizes his tried-and-true methods for wresting psychological control from the customer and steering the "sucker" towards a horrible deal. Reggie's strategy is to capitalize on the customer's financial naivete by bouncing the customer back and forth between the down payment, the monthly payment, and the finance charges, until he squeezes the optimum price from the deal. Reggie's methods aren't pretty, and although "Suckers" is a comedy film, it's a dark twisted humour that's at work here. Reggie is a truly appalling person, and Daniel Benzali's performance is incredible.
"Suckers" is a lively, crude film from beginning to end. Rife with sexual references, the film follows Bobby's introduction to the hard-sell atmosphere of the dealership--a place where nice people get eaten alive by the barracuda salesmen. In many ways, the culture at the car lot reflects society in general, and Reggie's view that it's a dog-eat-dog world is bleak. Reggie believes that anything is justified when it comes to making a sale, and he spouts his "it's never enough" philosophy (and morality) every chance he gets--egging on his salesmen, dehumanizing the customers, and justifying every deceptive ploy. Bobby discovers that no matter how tough you are, and how far you're prepared to go, there's always someone more desperate than you are, so in many ways this entertaining film is a cautionary tale. If you enjoy this film, I also recommend the documentary "Slasher"--displacedhuman
Funny! and an education in car buying.......2004-07-17

Hilarious, from a certain point of view.......2006-08-21
If you have any retail background or sales experience and can handle the overt bigotry and foul language, watch this movie. I can't remember the last time I laughed so strongly watching something. It's audacious, but that's a big part of its charm. How did I come upon this film? My sales manager let me borrow it. It's just that tuned into what the car business feels like at times - but, of course, is nowhere near an accurate representation of current practices... I hope.
Better than it looks!.......2004-11-16
Great movie! I went in thinking it would be really stupid and came out laughing hard. I thought maybe it was just me, but even my friends loved it too. If you're in sales you'll really get a kick out of it - especially if you're in car sales!
It's well worth the money and it's one of those obscure titles that's a definite nugget.
Too much cussing, but very accurate portrayal of car dealers.......2004-09-19
I have been a car salesman at a One-Price dealer for 11 years, and this DVD is very funny. The accuracy is pretty spot on for big cities in the old days of car selling. We all got a big kick out of some of the ridiculous stuff on here, as most of it is over the top, but some is very true.
There is an overuse of the F word, and a ridiculous ending, but overall a fun film for car guys. Some of the events are things that I have actually seen before except maybe being left out in the street with no pants after a test drive and subsequent sexual interlude with a beautiful woman...I wish...
I pretty agree w/ James D Fett.......2004-08-05
I think he managed to successfully summarize it...pretty descent flick until it hit it's crushindo...Should have left it like it was. It's almost as if they were trying to do a more exteme/exaggrated version of Glengarry Glenross...
Decent movie until it degrades into a low-rent caper flick.......2004-06-20
Good writing, pacing, and direction. Suckers made me laugh out loud several times, and was a good movie on its own merit until the direction takes a left turn into Quentin Tarrantinoville. The movie would have been a lot better had they stuck to the salesman theme.

FIREFLY AND FARSCAPE, MEET ALIENS AND BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.......2007-03-06
This film ROCKS!!!
What do you get when you combine a decommissioned space ship set (ala Firefly) as well as computer models of, said ship, that can be ever so slightly tweaked, with a rough and ready crew that includes a super sexy vampire babe, a tough Asian chick, a good old boy and a new recruit, thrown out alone in the deepest, darkest, reaches of the human colonized universe, to fight different variations of vampires, with a nice smattering of situation specific humour and a lot of nasty/gory special effects?!!
You get a little gem of a film called, "BLOOD SUCKERS"!!!
The ONLY real problem with this film, isn't in the actual movie itself, but in the DVD case, which to be honest, is a tad misleading.
I think that if they had used my header as their tag line, then more of the right people, for whom this film was created for, would give it a try, and realized what a great little gem of a film this, conglomeration of, sci-fi/horror/comedy, really is.
So if my header sounds intriguing to you, you like hot vampire babes (or are just curious as to what the Firefly set has been doing since the shows cancellation) then run right out and get it (and if, like me, you're lucky enough to find a new copy of it at Zellers, for $4.95 (Canadian funds) even better).
