"Oh my God, I'm a trend pimp!" cries rocker Josie McCoy (Rachel Leigh Cook) when she discovers that she and her best friends Melody (Tara Reid) and Val (Rosario Dawson)--collectively known as the Pussycats--have been recruited in a plot to brainwash America's youth into a frenzy of mindless consumerism. Unbeknownst to the Pussycats, subliminal messages in their chart-topping hit "Pretend to Be Nice" are forcing kids to follow the latest prefab trends as if their lives depended on it. Josie's going to be the Next Big Thing, and to her manager (Alan Cumming) and Megarecords mogul Fiona (Parker Posey), the other Pussycats are expendable baggage in their scheme to dictate the cool quotient of teenagers everywhere.
Shrewdly concocted by codirectors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, this wildly comedic update of the Archie comic book (and early-'70s cartoon show) is a deliriously entertaining assault on pop-cultural flotsam, with a disposable boy-band (aptly named "Du Jour") and cross-product marketing ploys that perpetuate blind conformity among gullible teens. Blatant product placements dominate virtually every colorful scene as Josie gamely embraces the cultural blight it claims to criticize, but this isn't Hollywood hypocrisy. Elfont and Kaplan willfully bite the hand that feeds them, and they're having loads of fun while advocating independent opinion. Cook and her pals are more honestly sexy than Britney Spears, and they make genuinely catchy music (although Cook's vocals were dubbed). It's pure fluff, but Josie and the Pussycats was conceived in such high spirits that it's hard to imagine how it could be improved. Even the obligatory end-credit outtakes are utterly irresistible. --Jeff Shannon

Long Tails and Ears for Hats.......2007-07-01
With its catchy theme song, likeable characters and funny plotlines, "Josie and the Pussycats" was one of the best Hanna-Barbera Series ever produced for Saturday Morning television.
Its release on DVD sparks many a memory of Saturday mornings spent in my pajamas as a six year old, enjoying Alpha Bits or Fruit Loops cereal while partaking of the broadcast fare. "Josie and the Pussycats" was a very important part of that ritual. My memories of the show are so vivid that I even remember the "In the Know" segments sandwiched between programs that featured the cast of "Josie" presenting light news features. If memory serves "In The Know" presaged "In The News" which ran for years on CBS Saturday Mornings.
Watching re-runs on Boomerang, I am amazed at how well the show holds up and the 'chase' songs were consistently good. Sure the plots were almost interchangeable, but, so what? The shows were fast paced, hilarious, and to borrow a lyric from the theme, we were invited to "c'mon watch the good guys win."
Unfortunately, this great cartoon premise lasted only a season before producers made the stupid decision to place the characters in Outer Space and for a show with far out plots, this premise was too way-out.
Can't wait to view the original adventures of Josie, Valerie, Melody, Alan, Alexander , Alexandra and Sebastian the Cat with my kids for another generation of enjoyment.

When this originally came out it rubbed alot of industry people the wrong way and did not get great reviews but watching it now -- it seems more applicable to the state of society. It's campy and fun to watch. The dialogue is not shakespear but it's not meant to be. It's a great escape and really makes you think about what and why things influence us.

'Josie and the Pussycats' is hard to categorize. But who cares?
This movie lovingly persiflages the workings of the rock music industry to you. In a highly light, original & refreshing way. Inviting you to sit back and enjoy, you'll be taken in by its humorous whirlwind-plot.
Though 'Josie and the Pussycats'' acting and picturing could have been better, its originality more than compensates. Five stars!

Blue Crush
With refreshing energy, Blue Crush is the kind of movie that girls and young women deserve to see more of. It's mostly for them (although nice tans and bikinis will attract the guys), and it rejuvenates the surf-movie tradition by showing real girls with real friendships, coping with absent parents, borderline poverty, rocky romance, and the challenge of raising a kid sister. For young Hawaiian Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth), those responsibilities are motivations to excel as a champion-class surfer... if she can overcome the fear of drowning, which she nearly did in a previous wipeout. Supportive friends (Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez, and Sanoe Lake) help her reach the climactic competition on Oahu's infamous Bonzai Pipeline, and like Saturday Night Fever, this engaging film uplifts the working class without condescension, riding high toward the joy of achievement. Himself an amateur surfer, director John Stockwell (Crazy/Beautiful) captures the extreme thrill of the sport while respecting the forces of nature and human behavior. --Jeff Shannon

Rockin.......2007-06-27
When this originally came out it rubbed alot of industry people the wrong way and did not get great reviews but watching it now -- it seems more applicable to the state of society. It's campy and fun to watch. The dialogue is not shakespear but it's not meant to be. It's a great escape and really makes you think about what and why things influence us.
lovingly original - ! -.......2006-11-23
Five stars!

I enjoyed the film, it was comical, but had serious side to it. I really, really enjoyed the extra features on the DVD like the Backstage with interviews of the various cast members and my favorite producer Marc Platt. I also loved the music videos.
