Bicentennial Man was stung at the 1999 box office, due no doubt in part to poor timing during a backlash against Robin Williams and his treacly performances in two other, then-recent releases, Jakob the Liar and Patch Adams. But this near-approximation of a science fiction epic, based on works by Isaac Asimov and directed, with uncharacteristic seriousness of purpose, by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire), is much better than one would have known from the knee-jerk negativity and box-office indifference.

Williams plays Andrew, a robot programmed for domestic chores and sold to an upper-middle-class family, the Martins, in the year 2005. The family patriarch (Sam Neill) recognizes and encourages Andrew's uncommon characteristics, particularly his artistic streak, sensitivity to beauty, humor, and independence of spirit. In so doing, he sets Williams's tin man on a two-century journey to become more human than most human beings.

As adapted by screenwriter Nicholas Kazan, the movie's scale is novelistic, though Columbus isn't the man to embrace with Spielbergian confidence its sweeping possibilities. Instead, the Home Alone director shakes off his familiar tendencies to pander and matures, finally, as a captivating storyteller. But what really makes this film matter is its undercurrent of deep yearning, the passion of Andrew as a convert to the human race and his willingness to sacrifice all to give and take love. Williams rises to an atypical challenge here as a futuristic Everyman, relying, perhaps for the first time, on his considerable iconic value to make the point that becoming human means becoming more like Robin Williams. Nothing wrong with that. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars A worthy effort in robot movies.......2007-07-03

All of you testosterone junkies beware. There is NO action in Bicentennial Man. None whatsoever. My guess is the action buffs would call this movie a chick flick because of the lack of violence and focus on emotional development. I pity you poor slobs for being so narrow minded. Bicentennial Man is like an autobiography. With that in mind the movie makes perfect sense and achieves what it sets out to do.

First lets get to the sci-fi stuff. The movie is supposed to open in the year 2005, which is roughly five years after the movie was made. No idea why they decided on just a short time. Obviously we never developed positronic brains and fully self-capable robots, but that's just nit picking. Add a couple of decades to the movie's timeline and all is well. The android technology was well done and believable. Also the 'upgrades' that Andrew (the android) does during his lifetime tend to be believable as well. Not much other tech stuff in the movie. You'll see a hover car here and some fancy tools there, but for the most part the technology in this movie is focused on the androids.

Because the movie's timeline covers about 200 years (thus the movie title) character development for the humans have been sped up, but not to the point to where you don't see it. There are a few one dimensional or static characters in the movie. The important characters fortunately aren't. Bicentennial Man is about character development by the way. It's about how Andrew becomes more and more human and how the humans around him adjust to how much he evolves.

The acting was well done of course. I have to give notice to child actress Hallie Kate Eisenberg for doing a great job as the youngest of the Martin family children. The movie is full of beautiful scenes both natural and technological. One thing that bugged me was there were some breathtaking futuristic cityscapes in Bicentennial Man, but they don't show any of them until much later in the movie. That tends to make the movie unbalanced as far as imagery is concerned.

If you like dramas then Bicentennial Man will hit the spot. If you like epics then you should be able to get something out of this movie too. It also makes a good date movie since it also involves love and relationships and all that mushy stuff. For the average science fiction fan as long as you're not all freaky about things having to blow up or anything like that then you too will enjoy Bicentennial Man.

5 out of 5 stars Biventeenial Man.......2007-07-03

I bought this as a gift for my daughter who just fell in love with the characters. I really enjoy it too. This saga, quest and journey leads a person through such intensity, happiness and bittersweet sorrow. A true love story that isn't sappy. I recommend it it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars more than excellent.......2007-06-27

This moviw is fantastic and arrives also early tha I was prepared to, so this is good.

2 out of 5 stars Of course the book was better.......2007-06-25

I've always liked Robin Williams, and I grew up reading Isaac Asimov. That's the problem. I'm sure that if you never read the novella, you really enjoy the movie. But like most people who read the story first, I can't get past the fact that the storyline was butchered for the sake of making the movie. Asimov rarely included romance in his writing, and what little he did wasn't included in Bicentennial Man. Maybe if they just called it something else, or said "loosely based on ideas and characters created by Isaac Asimov."

For those of you who have never read Isaac Asimov's original, enjoy this movie. It has special effects and a storyline you don't already know, and one of Robin Williams's better performances. But if you've read the book, don't disappoint yourself.

4 out of 5 stars An Android's Search for the meaning of Life.......2007-04-28

Williams plays Andrew, a household robot of the future, who, through a melted circuit, developes his own personality, and questions his reason for being. While the movie was touted as a comedy (there are very funny bits with Oliver Platt acting as his adopted mentor and `parts improver'), it is more poignant than this.

This film is a very well done study in humanity. Using a supposed inhuman character as the lead character, we are slapped in the face with a reality that has becaome all too common place in our society - the living in fear with not only the unknown, but living in fear because our government tells us we must. In the future, discrimination between races and beliefs is replaced with humans using androids as their focus of hate and rascism.

Andrew the Android (Williams), having become self-aware, learns to hide his uniqueness, in a simple attempt to survive destruction. Not only does he learn to mask his abilities to the public, he is forced to hide his developed emotions, provided through one of Platt's programs. While this makes for a great story, it is a comment on how humans interact in the real world.

As he searches for legitamacy, he demands Platt replace his robotic parts with more humanistic features in a desire to be nothing more than to be accepted by humans.

Centuries pass in this sad tale. Political stances in our so called modern mores are questioned. And in the end (GOD I HATE to give it away...) Andrew discovers love, how painful it can be, and learns that death is the ultimate definition of life.

I recommend this film for those who can stand introspection. If you are looking for a comedy, stop halfway through. The second half will jerk your heart, and hopefully open your eyes to the search that we all live for...the search for what makes us human.

I gave this 4 stars due to the trailers making this a comedy. I love Robim Williams in his serious roles. He has a gift of drawing us into the characters he plays. One of my favorites is `The Fisher King'.

Rent the movie, and be prepared to come to grips with your own feelings about stereotypes.

Manic energy and an agreeable level of comic insanity turn Just Friends into the kind of brainless comedy you can enjoy as a modest guilty pleasure. If you liked director Roger Kumble's previous comedy The Sweetest Thing (and let's face it, that movie had some really funny moments), chances are you'll get at least a few solid belly-laughs from this not-so-high-concept premise, in which a formerly fat high-schooler named Chris (Ryan Reynolds) is transformed, ten years later, into a womanizing music executive with a high-profile client (Anna Faris) in the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera mold. As it zips along with some broad-stroked slapstick and snappy one-liners, the screenplay by Adam Tex Davis contrives to reunite Chris with Jamie (Amy Smart), the former cheerleader who was the great, unrequited love of Chris' miserable high-school life. By his narcissistic logic, he'll seduce her by treating her badly (i.e. she'll want what she thinks she can't have), but he gets unexpected competition in the form of a "Mr. Sensitive" type (Chris Klein, from American Pie), and it's pretty much Hollywood formula from there on, as Just Friends loses momentum without losing its basic appeal. And while Reynolds invests his character with an unexpected degree of emotional nuance, Faris (Scary Movie 3) pulls out all the stops, going deliriously over-the-top to maintain her reputation as a rising comedy starlet with a (hopefully) promising future. We're not talking rocket science here, folks... just sit back, take off your thinking cap, and have some fun. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Funny all the way through!.......2007-06-30

This is a great movie. The casting is right on. Anna Farris is perfect as the spoiled, shallow pop diva. Ryan Reynolds is always funny. Chris Klein was an unexpected pleasant surprise. Julie Hagerty is always a treat.

We have shown this to a variety of our friends and all of them have loved it.

Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Very underrated movie.......2007-06-28

Its amazing how a movie this good could come out with so little buzz. From start to finish you'll be laughing. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Movie!!!.......2007-06-18

Great comedy!

This movie had me laughing almost the entire time. Anna Faris gives an amazing performance in this movie as a ditzy pop wanna-be singer. The rest of the cast is amazing in this movie as well. The story is very good and many could relate to it, specially if you've had a crush on someone in high school and you always felt like you were never good enough, unless you were rich, famous, and thin. This is defiantly a good comedy and revolves around the holidays but it's not just another holiday comedy either.

I have this movie as my top favorite films of all times. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean. great movie at a great value!

The shipping was fast, and the DVD was in great condition. This DVD has a great variety of DVD extras. You'll also get to see a lot of behind the scenes and a writer's journey on how to become an actor for a small role in the movie. It's a great DVD with lots to offer and it will keep you entertained through out the whole movie and special features as well.

I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars JUST FRIENDS IS JUST HILARIOUS!.......2007-06-13

This is the second movie I've watched with Ryan Reynolds in it in a short while. This movie is every bit as good as "Waiting" if not better. A quirky romantic comedy that is funny and has some heart. The DVD transfer is excellent and there are some very funny and interesting extras.

5 out of 5 stars Love Ryan Reynolds.......2007-06-08

Just a good fun movie. I love his sense of humor. I could and did watch it over and over again.

Ryan Dunn (played by himself) is one sorry SOB; he's completely hung up on Glauren (Jenn Rivell), his ex-girlfriend, even though she's out playing the field. Rumor spreads that she's hooked up with heavy metal's poster child, aptly named Hellboy (Rake Yohn). Ryan can't stand the thought of the two of them together, so he recruits his friends Valo (Bam Margera) and Falcone (Brandon DiCamillo) to find out the truth. The pair do whatever it takes to get their evidence, even break into her house. In the meantime Ryan flirts with insanity, has run-ins with the law and even gets stabbed in the eye with a fork as his friends try relentlessly to help him forget the girl. Haggard also features special appearances by professional skateboarders Tony Hawk, Jason Ellis and Bucky Lasek.

If you like the craziness of Jackass and Viva la bam! Then you will like this. Its very similar only theres no stunts, its a storyline with a plot! Just remember who's acting in it Bam Margera, Dico, Dunn, And Raab and Of course Mr. Don Vito!! as well as many more , you defiantly know with people like that you are going to have a seriously funny zany movie

2 out of 5 stars So BAD.......2007-05-14

I bought this DVD, being a big Bam/Jackass fan...and boy, was I disappointed. There are times when the writers of this film take it too seriously, and times when they don't take it seriously enough. It was kind of all over the place for me. I think the guys should just stick with what they do best and not try to seem so "deep".

Flypaper is a curious name for this shaggy-dog film about characters who continually cross paths as their lives careen out of control. Craig Sheffer is the ostensible lead, though his hotheaded, gun-toting criminal is hardly the picture's hero. He kick-starts the story by kidnapping meth lab chemist Lucy Liu, and then hunts down his junkie girlfriend, Sadie Frost, who is now under the care of her crotchety real estate mogul guardian (Robert Loggia). In the very next room is John C. McGinley, cheating on his jealous future bride, Illeana Douglas, with Talisa Soto, a dominatrix in tight leather. The film plays out these threads as if they are destined to intertwine in some improbable climax, but instead they merely crisscross in passing, finally fraying in a soft, anticlimactic conclusion. The performers try to have some fun with their familiar parts, and writer-director Klaus Hoch tosses in a few curve balls (my favorite is the knife sticking out of Sheffer's skull like a topknot, turning the homicidal heist man into a punch-drunk pussycat), but for all his offbeat humor and funky twists, nothing in Flypaper ever sticks. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-01-20

Unscrupulous Californians will do anything to get their hands on a million bucks in this twisted tale, which intertwines three story lines. Bobby Ray (Craig Sheffer) abducts a meth-lab chemist (Lucy Liu) and sets off to find his druggie girlfriend (Sadie Frost), who's in the custody of her real-estate magnate dad (Robert Loggia) -- a man in danger of being kidnapped. Meanwhile, jealous Laura (Illeana Douglas) must deal with a philandering fiancé.

4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2006-08-23

Like most people, I've bought this movie because of one or two appealing things it contains. Watching it, though, was a nice surprise. There was lots of scenes where I coundn't stop laughing! Of course, those appealing things were there too but, in the end, the whole was worth much more than that.

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING !!!!.......2006-04-30

Yes,it borrows the crossed stories structure from Pulp Fiction,so what ? The technique made history and many films have used it without harm whatsoever to their plots/stories.Plus,you get to see Lucy Liu at her sweetest and youngest, with some nudity and sexual scenes. If you?re a fan of this hot asian chick, you?ll go nuts about this movie (I did).

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2005-09-02

I don't know what the Big Bureaucratic Studio's problem is, but it seems that this film, along with equally awesome "Judas' Kiss," has never seen the big screen in this here Republic.

This one bears little resemblance to the plotless, boring, mechanical, gratuitously and senselessly cruel pile of manure titled "Pulp Fiction." "Flypaper" is, of course, a parody of a parody, but, goodness, it celebrates life and, if you watch it closely (as you should when it comes to good complete movies) finds a comical angle in things one is expected to idolize these days (which especially appeals to my sense of humor).

Fun, talented, astoundingly good. I have watched it seven times over the past year, and there are very few movies, less than ten, in the entire history of cinematography, that I can watch more than once.

4 out of 5 stars big kev.......2005-05-05

Awesome movie comparable (although better than) pulp fiction. This film revolves around a hand full of charactors all intertwined in some form or another. Lots of witty one liners and laughs (especially for those that find others misfortunes ammusing). Throw in one of the most bizzarest sex scene you will ever see and you have a film defenatly worth watching.

From the creators of the reality series Fire Within comes another look at the creation of a Cirque du Soleil production--in this case, the controversial and erotic Zumanity, which performs exclusively in Las Vegas. Lovesick follows four performers--drag MC Joey Arias (also seen in Mondo New York); an alarmingly muscular Cuban named Alex, who discovers his girlfriend is pregnant as he's in the midst of the show's development; British Laetitia, who keeps imagining her father's unhappy response to the show; and Canadian Jonel, who's soon to be married--if her fiance can make it across the border. As the documentary chronicles the bumpy and often abrasive process of Zumanity's creation, it delves into the strain the show puts on the performers' relationships, both because of the show's sexual content and the enormous commitment it requires. Viewers seeking titillation will probably be disappointed, as Lovesick only provides glimpses of Zumanity itself. But anyone interested in the interplay between on-stage and off in the lives of performers will find this documentary fascinating and wish it had only gone further into the dancers' psyches. --Bret Fetzer

One can't judge this documentary against the merits or lack thereof of the Vegas Cirque de Soleil show, but it is fair to require that this expensive documentary do more than simply present a MTV montage of images to reflect the "real story behind the story" of the making of the show. The shots inside the cars are dull and look like HBO's Confessions to a Taxicab Driver. The actual footage of rehearsals and presentation of the show are done with thousands of one second montaged shots that makes viewing this as anything but erotic or tense or dramatic. This type of topic deserved a much better movie. There really is no drama to its telling of the story, and there is nothing compelling or interesting in the way the movie follows the lives of the ones involved - especially disappointing since although the transvestite is the one most followed and examined, there appears to be far better stories involving the Catholic ballerina and the woman whose fiance is in Canada. Dull, and confusing.

1 out of 5 stars Shred-Worthy.......2006-11-30

I must say that this DVD seriously disappointed me. I absolutely hated it. I heard that Zumanity was a more "adult" show. I figured that maybe the costumes would have a little less fabric, and that the show would be more sexual than other shows. But I figured that it was the Cirque, even if the above were true, at least it would be done tastefully. I NEVER expected to see what I saw. I was so extremely disappointed. Not just with the DVD, but also with Cirque.

This DVD is the behind the scenes beginning of the show. But I still saw more T&A than I expected to see. (And the actors were told that they were playing it too sae and needed to show more.) And it was not done tastefully. I truely think that a strip joint would have more class than this show does. I'm not one that is easily offended, but I couldn't even finish watching the dvd. It was absolutely terrible. I'm tempted to send it through the cd shredder.

I'm just glad I bought the video before wasting money on a trip to see the show.

4 out of 5 stars LOVESICK is not suppposed to show ZUMANITY.......2006-07-26

It is amazing how many people get locked into a narrow view of what 'Cirque' is 'supposed' to be. Lovesick is a great documentary showing the trials and tribulations that take place before the whimsical world of Cirque becomes just that for the audience. I'm glad they chose not to show the actual performance. This DVD is not the show, and never should be classified as such. A must for anyone interested in the darker nature of pre-production.

Like Hitchcock, Atom Egoyan envisions family life as a potential hotbed of literal or figurative violence and incest. In Felicia's Journey, Egoyan's adaptation of William Trevor's shattering novel, one dreads to imagine what TV-cook mom (Arsinée Khanjian) did to so damage her pudgy son that grown- up Hilditch (Bob Hoskins) still prepares meals in perfect unison with faded videotapes of her show--and, as we eventually discover, often takes more sinister trips down Memory Lane. Distant kin to Psycho's Tony Perkins, Hoskins's troll is so obsessive, so traumatized, his every short-armed, fat-handed gesture and sing-song utterance is precisely calculated to keep reality safely buried.

Egoyan's movies often seem located underwater, in some surreal dreamscape where one's breath is perpetually suspended while a slow horror seeps ever deeper under the skin. Helpless, transfixed, one watches as his characters drive inexorably toward mined intersections where lives and souls may be lost or redeemed. When Hilditch's path crosses, diverges from, and finally coincides with that of young, pregnant Felicia (Elaine Cassidy)--an Irish innocent searching for her errant boyfriend--it leads to terrible epiphany for these fellow travelers. Trouble is, creepy Hilditch and too-naive Felicia come up a bit short in the psychological complexity department, so by film's end, revelatory payoffs are mostly penny ante. Felica's Journey tours familiar Egoyan territory--an industrialized wasteland full of hungry hearts--but this latest fairy tale (think perverse variations on Hansel and Gretel) isn't in the same league with such "family values" masterpieces as Exotica or The Sweet Hereafter. --Kathleen Murphy

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dinner with a Serial Killer.......2005-11-13

This is a movie in the Hitchcock style, this time without gore, but with subtle terror.

Some of the scenes are homages to the master, but this does not detract from their effectiveness. (I'm thinking of glass of milk carried up the stairs in Suspicion.)

The movie is suspenseful, and scary as mild-mannered catering supervisor Hilditch befriends the lost traveller Felicia as she struggles to find her missing boyfriend. On the surface, Mr. Hilditch seems so nice, but as his little hobby is gradually revealed, even the calmest scenes are quite terrifying.

Hilditch has grown up under the suffocating wing of his famous TV chef mother. Apparently, like the mother-son bonding in Psycho, the results of this "nurturing" can be deadly.

The leads are played by Bob Hoskins -- what a great actor -- and Elaine Cassidy, a young actress who makes the incredibly naive Felicia come alive. The movie is from a novel by William Trevor.

This is a troubling film, filmed in wide-open industrial spaces that emphasize how alone and weak Felicia is. The only place of comfort is the serial killer's cozy homestead.

This is not a Psycho-style shrieker, but it is a work of quiet horror. "Have a cup of tea, my dear?"

If you liked this, see Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter.

4 out of 5 stars A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER..........2005-08-11

This film adaptation of William Trevor's novel of psychological suspense, for which its author was the recipient of the 1994 Whitbread Award, is one that those who read the book should see, as well as those who like unusual films of psychological suspense. After reading the book, I became curious as to how a film adaptation would work, as so much of the book involves the introspections of two people whose lives interconnect. Despite some of its shortcomings, it is definitely a film worth seeing, if only for Bob Hoskins brilliant performance.

Felicia is a seventeen year old motherless and naive Irish girl, who has become intimate with an Irish boy named Johnny. Of course, the expected ensues, and after Johnny has left Ireland and returned to England where he ostensibly works, Felicia is left holding the bag. Her disapproving father suspects Johnny of actually being in the British Army and, thus, a traitor to his own. He also has a few choice words for his daughter, now that she is in the family way, and none of it is flattering. So, Felicia leaves her rural village and her family and goes off in search of Johnny, having nothing more than the vaguest of ideas where he might be.

She crosses the Irish Sea and arrives in the English Midlands in the industrial city of Birmingham, as she believes Johnny to be working in a lawn mower factory there. In her search for Johnny, she runs into the portly catering manager for one of the local factories. His name is Joseph Ambrose Hilditch, and he is outwardly a jovial and agreeable man, well-liked by his co-workers and meticulous about his culinary repasts. He lives in solitary splendor in the large house in which he grew up. There, he concocts lavish gourmet meals, while watching tapes of his deceased mother's television show, as she was a chef of some renown. Obviously, he was quite close to his mother, and he still misses her. The house is cluttered with collectibles but is well-kept, although decorated in the style of a bygone era. Mr. Hilditch is, indeed, a collector, but his collection is initially far beyond Felicia's imaginings. In fact, Mr. Hilditch has a darker side to him, which is not immediately discernible by the unwary.

When Felicia first meets Mr. Hilditch, it is to ask for information in connection with her fool's errand, but something about her catches Mr. Hilditch's fancy, and he finds himself keeping Felicia in his crosshairs. When Felicia seemingly unexpectedly runs into Mr. Hilditch again, he directs her to lodgings, and so it begins. As Mr. Hilditch insinuates himself ever so slowly into her life, weaving a fantasy about his own life that is sure to put her mind at ease about him. Felicia begins finding herself ensnared by this ostensibly kind and ever so helpful, avuncular man, and she initially fails to see the darkness that lies at the core of his being. The viewer, however, is given sneak peaks into some of his peculiarities and deceits.

Bob Hoskins is magnificent in the role of Mr. Hilditch, infusing the character with an avuncular charm that sits as a thin veneer over the cauldron of seething emotion within, emotions that cause Mr. Hilditch to act in ways most others would not. The viewer sees what Felicia fails to see, until it is almost too late, the duplicity and cunning that is masked by his overt geniality and seeming kindness. Like a spider to the fly, our teddy bearish Mr. Hilditch begins laying his trap, and so Felicia's journey thrusts her into the belly of the beast. Newcomer, Eileen Cassidy is quite good as Felicia, playing her with a naiveté that is central to the character. Unlike the character of Mr. Hilditch, who physically stays true to the Mr. Hilditch of the book, the Felicia of the film differs physically. Instead of a pail, puling, nun like blonde, the viewer is presented with a robust looking, fresh-faced brunette.

The cinematography is excellent, and the interior of Mr. Hilditch's home is magnificent, as it evokes another era, miring Mr. Hilditch in happier times while at home. The musical soundtrack is used to good effect to maintain that evocation. The director, Atom Egoyan, who also wrote the screenplay, does a fairly good job of adapting the book to the screen, given some of the constraints inherent in the book. Where the film fails somewhat is in the exploration of the darker corners of the human psyche, although he maintains the cat and mouse game that is central to the story. While the mind of Mr. Hilditch is dark, indeed, unlike the book, there are no unspeakable revelations in the film as to what lies at the heart of his predilection. What the director substitutes does not really satisfy the viewer as to why Mr. Hilditch does what he does.

The film, however, manages to show how each of these two flawed human beings were initially able to achieve a connection with another, only to find ostensible betrayal. What is decidedly different is the way that they each cope with that betrayal. Moreover, the book has no happily-ever-after ending to its story, which culminates with a conclusion that is quite bleak, robbing the reader of some satisfaction. The film's conclusion differs from that of the book, and while less bleak, is also somewhat unsatisfactory but, perhaps, only so to those who may have already read the book. As in the book, the journey that Felicia makes is larger in scope than merely a trip across the Irish Sea.

5 out of 5 stars Theater, Film & Music.......2005-07-26

Like "Exotica," Felicia's Journey focuses on impossible dreams, but murders we never see are the reality in the background. Wonderful music links what will never be with what we do not want to know. Lost girl (Elaine Cassidy) receives lots of help from too-lonely professional(Bob Hoskins),who turns out to be a serial killer. His victims come to life in one-minute video clips - a great theater mask - you know they're already dead. "Rest in Peace" sung in Gaelic by Kate Crossan during the final credits is a gorgeous emotional reconciliation.

5 out of 5 stars An ugly secret is behind the door!.......2005-03-31

This is a low-key psychological thriller about a relationship between a hunger of love young woman with an older man that maintains two well definite profiles. So this ambigous character will spark the screen.

Felicia is simple woman who is pregnant, a fact that she will keep secret from her family as well Johnny, her boyfriend. So after a long and unhappy search, she will go to Birmingham to intend rebuild a new life. But the mysterious and enigmatic presence of Hildtich will seem to fit perfectly for her hopes and illusions.

The loneliness and the double moral will meet in this crossroad emotional picture. As you know, Hoskins is one the top actors in the world and this role comes to him as ring to finger.

Atom Egoyan a first class director has built a very intersting film without any fissure. This work deserved the prize as Best Canadian Film in 1999 so consider this factor as another positive point.

Recommended without any reserve!

4 out of 5 stars Purity itself can surely wash the pain away. .......2005-03-17

Felicia's Journey was one of those films that I loved, then hated, then liked, then thought was decent. It was a difficult film to watch because the pacing that Egoyan has implemented is unlike any other film that I have seen. His use of the camera to create that uneasy sensation on screen and while watching the film was very impressive. Hoskins gives the performance of his career as this very controlled man with a very dark secret while Elaine Cassidy impressed me with her simplistic portrayal of Felicia. This was a brilliant film, but there were just some scenes and elements that didn't seem to match the rest of the film. The ending in particular was a bit misleading and at times rushed, but everything building up to that point really hit a strong nerve. If you were to define the word "thriller", I don't think that you could do it without mentioning this film. Brilliant acting, an interesting use of direction (which worked very well), and a story that allowed itself to be build upon during each scene are just a few of the great moments (that overshadow the poor) in this movie.

Felicia's Journey would not have been the powerhouse that it was if it was not for the powerful acting by Bob Hoskins who completely engulfed this character and showed us this rare glimpse of evil humanity. While I am sure that some of it is due in part by Egoyan's direction, but you cannot keep your eyes off Hoskins whenever he is on the screen. He builds his character so well, and bit by bit, that you never can anticipate what will he will say or do next. That is what is brilliant about Hoskins. Normally, when you have a troubled soul like Hilditch you can sometimes guess what he is going to do next. Actors sometimes fall into a pattern of repetition, but with Hoskins it was as if we were watching the final chapter and there were bigger events taking place. He also worked so well with Cassidy that at times I had forgotten that I was watching a film. His ability to be this sinister father figure to this girl was impressive. Hoskins really built this beautiful family dynamic to the film that I never saw coming. Outstanding performances by both that any film connoisseurs should not miss.

Taped onto the vintage acting is this deeply engrossing story that pours from the bottle like some freshly corked wine. The simplicity of the story allows the complexity of the characters emerge and be triumphant. The story gives our characters layers upon which we gradually peel away. Hoskins character especially. From the opening scene until the final, I felt as if I was given the whole course, and not just bits and pieces. While Felicia's name does take the title of this film, it is Hoskins whom this story is really about. We learn more about his life, and his struggles than we do with Felicia. Yet, the story does not stop there. I found it quite interesting that Felicia father caused her conflict, while a matriarchal figure challenged Hilditch's perception. I thought that Egoyan was really trying to do more than tell a serial killer story (as the box may reveal) by giving us these strange and strangled family moments. I felt as if this was more a story about family, then it was about the horrors of humanity ... or perhaps it was a slice of both. Either way, the story is the foundation to this picture, and for the first time it really worked. So many times we go to the theater expecting to be blown away by a creative and empowering story, but this time it was a polar opposite. The acting is what kept this film high above water, while the story (as simple as it was) only helped build Hoskins and Cassidy further into the world of impressiveness.

Finally, there was Egoyan behind the camera doing what he does best. I have seen only one of his other films, Exotica, and he is notorious for building the suspense from behind the camera as well as in front. His choice of panning in the wrong direction, the colors surrounding our characters and the sound of the film hit our nerves before any actors even walk into the picture. This is all coming from Egoyan's mind, which continues to impress me with each film that I view. I cannot wait to see more of his work and to see how well he has developed with each project. You can definitely see the Hitchcock influence that has been imprinted with Egoyan. I finished watching Frenzy (by Hitchcock) right after this film and the similarities were uncanny. Egoyan reminds me of a cross between Hitchcock and von Trier. His bold style makes each film his own, yet he is not afraid to be brutally honest and attributive to the cultural setting. He is a true filmmaker that needs to continue to prove that you don't need millions to create a masterpiece.

While I have given credit to everyone, and thing, that deserves it in this film, I must finish this review by saying that this film was not perfection on a stick, but very close. There were some unfinished ends that could have been tied better, and the ending just felt as if there was this outside influence at work that Egoyan was battling. Up until the final twenty minutes of this film, I was thoroughly enjoying what I was seeing, but when the idea of religion was brought in from left field, I felt the final moments were rushed and forced. I needed something just as dramatic, just not so random. Also, I needed some form of conclusion to Felicia's actual "journey". Did she find what she was looking for?

Overall, I was very impressed with this film.

Set during the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong in 1997, this fascinating film uses that urgent and grandly ceremonial political backdrop for an intimate study of personal transition. Jeremy Irons plays a seasoned journalist who discovers he is terminally ill, causing him to be torn between his obsessive love for a former prostitute (Chinese film star Li Gong) and a streetwise hustler (Maggie Cheung) whom he has chosen as the subject of a video documentary. Through his involvement in the lives of these two very different women, director Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club) creates a cinematic "love-hate letter" to his native Hong Kong, where each character is allegorical and suffers an identity crisis much like Hong Kong itself. The film's love story is somewhat aimless and ultimately unimportant, but Chinese Box (even the title suggests a place that holds secrets within its borders) remains a fascinating film in the semi-documentary tradition, capturing the psychology of its time and place with compelling immediacy. Musician/actor/politician Ruben Blades is featured in a memorable supporting role. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Possibly the most ridiculous film ever made!! Razzies all over!.......2007-07-03

THIS WAS AWFUL!!Usually I can find something positive to say about a film, but not with CHINESE BOX!

If you choose to waste 99 minutes with a film that is absolutely ridiculous be my guest. How could someone such as Wayne Wang who directed THE JOY LUCK CLUB and actors Gong Li (RAISE THE RED LANTERN) and Jeremy Irons (just about everything for thirty years) have ever held their heads up after this bomb!!!

1997 Hong Kong is in the midst of British Colonial Rule ending. What will happen to it's culture,it's society etc. as the Chinese regain rule? If that is the story then something really got lost in translation in this internationally produced debacle. This screenplay is absolutely one of the worst that I have ever sat through. The acting is simply misdirected.CHINESE BOX is ludicrous. 0 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2007-02-11

Chinese Box is a mesmerizing assault on the senses: confounding, mystifying, bewildering and passionately driven from beginning to end. The acting is riveting and complex: Gong Li eloquently portrays a siren of a cipher and Jeremy Irons unrelentingly lives and breathes the role of her doomed lover. Wayne Wang's film draws you into a maze of emotions and actions that intertwine to defy all reason and yet make the most profound sense. IF you are serious about your film collection--Chinese Box is a must have.

2 out of 5 stars Wayne, please stick with melodrama and lay off the social commentary.......2006-07-18

I can completely understand those who feel this is a beautiful and touching film. The acting, pace, mood are good and even affecting.

It is the social commentary part that is laughably atrocious. It should be a crime for a film maker to make up historical events like Mr. Wong did in this film; I am referring to the two scenes of student suicide. For those of us who are well informed, the movie just lost all credibility; for those who aren't, it just added more to social and racial prejudice. It is beyond artistic license, it is political propaganda! Why oh why Wayne? To appease certain Westerners' stereotypical view of the Chinese? Simply unforgivable!! Wayne, for your and the world's sake, stick with melodramas please.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome except for the Maggie Cheung Story.......2006-07-03

The film is a masterpiece. But the Maggie Cheung story was sad and not vey interesting, that is my main objection to this excellent movie. And Ruben Blades is quite annoying.

But the Jeremy Irons and Gong Li love story is a masterpiece, it deserves a place among humanity great performances. The chinese man that is Gong Li's boy friend sees her as a prostitute, but the english man loves her with all his hearth. Extremely good acting, since it is extremely difficult to play convincingly a love story.

The music is absolutely awesome and is perfect for such a good love story. I am not a big fan of love stories, but this one is a true one and it is awesome.

The end is really sad. The film is really very very good. If you ask me who is the best actress in the world, I probably would say Gong Li. Sadly she is not so popular in the western world

1 out of 5 stars Lost time..........2006-06-20

This film has a good plot (a romance, in a background of change in an exotic place), a great cast (Jeremy Irons, Li Gong, Maggie Cheung), and a well-known director (Wayne Wang, the director of "The Joy Luck Club"). Notwhitstanding that, "Chinese box" falls short of expectations, and can only be defined as a forgettable movie.

In case you are still interested in this film, despite what I have just told you, I will outline the plot for you. The main character is John (Jeremy Irons), a journalist in love with Vivian (Li Gong), a lovely Chinese woman with a shady past that he cannot have. John discovers he is severely ill, and decides to make something in the last few months he has left. He wants to make a documentary regarding Hong Kong, the place where he lives as an expatriate. During his new endeavour, John meets a very troubled young woman (played by Maggie Cheung), and manages to document some of the turmoil that took place in Hong Kong before the Chinese takeover in 1997.

All in all, I regret renting this movie, and I regard the time I spent watching "Chinese Box" as lost. Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Time machine to a better place........2007-03-24

This movie was fantastic. It was made in a more innocent time before AIDS, stalking laws and all of the scandelous relationships between patients and doctors were plastered all over the media. Hell, there was'nt even such a thing as sexual harrassment back then. I look at the film now and somehow feel sentimental for a period when we did'nt know how dangerous a place the world could be. Blissful ignorence.

Dudley Moore was just one of the all time comedic genius's that will never be duplicated. Practically anything starring him was sure to be a hit, even though overshadowed by Tom Hanks in the end. I especially liked the narritive by the Freud character, it makes the film unique and catches you off guard while being so appropriate and funny. Charming, whistful, clever and enduring, what more is to be said. If you can get past the funny 80's clothes and old cars of the day the film is a real treat, if you are older then it will take you back to a time when life was sweeter and fun was a priority.

3 out of 5 stars Love Sick, Sweet Love.......2007-03-14

I am not a Dudley Moore fan, but this is one of his performances that rings true. It is a love story, unabashedly, and is told in a gentle, loving way. There are laughs, but often not far from tears, and would make a wonderful date movie.

3 out of 5 stars The score is available.......2006-12-22

For those of you who love this beautiful score, one half-hour of it is available on the Varese Sarabande CD "Sister Mary Explains It All" by Philippe Sarde, which contains the title score, "Lovesick" and selections from "The Manhattan Project" The CD is worth the purchase for "Lovesick" alone. Although long out of print, it can be purchased on iTunes.

3 out of 5 stars Fair movie with a great musical score........2005-02-28

I enjoy most projects done by Dudley More and that includes this movie.
At times it seem like a bit of struggle for the actors to bring life to this average script.
The real gem in this movie is the score (soundtrack) which is beautiful.
Disappointingly at this point, I can't find it anywhere on CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Experience To Treasure Forever........2004-02-29

There isn't really anything to say about LOVESICK that hasn't been said by the other Amazon.com reviewers already. But my gosh, I just have to express my love for this movie! , I consider myself madly in love with a girl. LOVESICK is the very first film I have ever seen to accurately express this dazzling, baffling, and just plain ridiculous feeling we call love. Dudley Moore gives a quiet, toned-down performance (at least when compared to ARTHUR), which gives him a realism like nothing I have ever seen on film. Same goes for Elizabeth McGovern, who with her exceptional beauty and controlled delivery makes her all the more believable. You really do feel that these two people are madly in love! Dudley Moore's slowly escalating obsession with this woman is a marvel to behold, with frequent visits from Ales Guiness in a terrific supporting role. Another key aspect of the film is the music by Peter Knight; magical, enchanting, and every other similar word fails to describe it. Words cannot begin to describe LOVESICK, an everlasting homage to love, through good times and bad times, to ultimately realizing that everything else is rubbish without it.

5 out of 5 stars FOREVER TOGETHER IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!.......2005-03-27

Why haven't we heard more about this movie? I wanted it to go on forever. It's touching, heartwarming, a fantastic story, and a great twist at the end! Ralph Macchio is brilliant and Diane Ladd is great as the grandmother. If you ever want to just sit back for a couple of hours and take refuge from the outside world and just feel good, then watching this film would be the way to do it. If you want to feel emotion like never before, then this is the movie to watch. I'm still crying, not from sadness...but the tender tears of joy that this film induced. This is a movie for all ages.
