From a mischievous monkey to children-turned-dinosaurs, bedtime proves a time of tiredness, tricks, and tirades in this collection of famous bedtime stories. The animated "Goodnight Gorilla" remains true to Peggy Rathman's irresistible artwork and features an adorable monkey who outsmarts the Zookeeper by unlocking all the animals cages and then following him home to bed. The addition of a jazzy "Variations on Brahms Lullaby" and understated narration by Anthony Edwards enhance an already terrific story. "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight" takes a humorous look at the striking similarities between children's behavior when bedtime arrives and that of roaring dinosaurs and "Happy Birthday, Moon" is a sweet story about a little boy who wants to buy the moon a birthday present. "The Napping House" features still pictures of illustrator Don Wood and the repetitive verse of Audrey Wood depicting a pile-up of creatures on Grandma's bed that ends with the tiniest creature setting off a huge chain reaction. Bonus stories include "The Paperboy," a romantic vision of a day in the life of a Paperboy; "Patrick," a tribute to the restorative power of music; and "The Hat," an exploration of chance and good fortune. A read-along feature is available for all stories. The Scholastic Video Collection has once again succeeded in bringing classic children's literature to life on the television screen. 4 out of 5 stars 5 stars minus 1 for a single gripe.......2007-04-13

This collection of stories is absolutely wonderful, except for...'How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight' is unnecessarily scary for little ones. The music is dark and menacing at times, and the dinosaurs are a bit too threatening. The 'demanding a piggyback ride' episode looks like the dinosaur is attacking the mother and she actually screams! My [...] still wants to watch it, but can only tolerate it while clinging to me for reassurance. I would have preferred more whimsical music and childlike dinosaur behavior, but older kids will probably like their dinosaurs with some teeth. That said, it is well done visually and the narration by Jane Yolen is excellent. It's a fun story.

Now that's done, and here are my thoughts on the many many other good things about this DVD:

My son loves every story and asks for each one repeatedly. I can and do watch them over and over again without getting sick of them, and I have my favorites as well (The Hat and Patrick).

Goodnight Gorilla: Actually works better as an animation than a book (just my opinion). Simply charming.

Happy Birthday Moon: Although I don't really love this one, my son really does and that's all that counts after all.

The Napping House: I didn't think my son would like this one, but he loves it. I love it too. Very soothing, simple and sweet.

The Paper Boy: Magical! The animation is beautiful and the musical score soars with grace and feeling. Forest Whittaker's narration is understated and brilliant.

Patrick: Just Music and animation, but a great story full of joy. The music is brilliant and the animation visually exciting. Love it!

The Hat: A wonderful story full of wit and humor. A magical hat, a good man down on his luck, heroic deeds rewarded, and a happy ending. My favorite!

    5 out of 5 stars Great video.......2007-04-12

My son really likes to watch this DVD and does get tired when watching the relaxing stories to put him to sleep. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite books come to life.......2007-02-26

This video is excellent for giving the stories more depth. Especially good for pairing with the literature itself and don't forget to look at the extra bonus stories. I'm a special ed teacher and I find them invaluable. The students ask for them over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Every story is fantastic! The perfect bedtime DVD!.......2007-02-17

We purchased the DVD in March 2006 when our daughter was 1 1/2. She hasn't tired of watching it yet. We have other DVDs including others from the Scholastic Video Collection. This is by far the Best and continues to be the most watched. Our daughter wants to watch every story. For those older parents, who remember Parent's Press Books from the 70's, "The Hat" will bring back memories. Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Nice for winding down at night........2007-01-19

My daughter is 2 and loves the quiet tone of the Goodnight Moon, Happy Birthday Moon, and Paperboy. We usually skip the dinosaur one because the creatures are a little scary for her at 2, but would be appropriate for kids a little older who would appreciate the story that is being told. All in all a great DVD with some fine actors lending their voices (Anthony Edwards, Forest Whitaker.)

Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4's case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah's couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O'Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it's funny, some of it's not, but there's a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. --Bret Fetzer

    4 out of 5 stars Great Parody........2007-07-03

After seeing a preview for Scary Movie 4, I knew that I had to have it. It was simply hilarious. I thought that they would run out of material after the third movie, but this was surely just as funny.

I definitely chuckled more than a few time at the amusements that this video ensued. I especially loved the Tom Cruise/Oprah ending, and the Brokeback Mountain sequence.

Ok, So this movie may not be the best movie I have ever seen, but it did make me laugh for a couple of hours.

Scary Movie 4 is a great parody!

3 out of 5 stars A comedy that pokes fun at scary movies........2007-06-13

If you've seen any of the 4 Scary Movies, you know what they're about. They're comedies that poke fun at scary movies. They don't have any real story line. They're just there to make us laugh.

So what's to like about this movie? There are quite a few jokes that had me laughing out loud. Some of the funny parts remind me of my own weird sense of humor and it's good to see a movie that contains not-so-typical/predictable jokes. Also, it's good to see the same old characters again in this movie (if you've seen Scary Movie 2, you'll appreciate the fact that the "Take my little land!" guy is in this one as well).

What's not to like about this movie? There's a couple of things. First, if you're not a horror movie fan (or if you haven't been to the movie theatre in a while), you may not understand some of the jokes and/or part of the plot. The majority of this movie is based on the movie "The Grudge" and "War of the Worlds". If you haven't seen both of these movies (or at least know in general what they are about), it's easy to get confused. Also, as I said above, if you're expecting a really good story line, don't even bother. All of the movies in the Scary Movie line are basically just random scenes thrown together to gain some laughs that will come together to create an ending (and not even a good one at that).

My rating: 3.5/5 stars. If you've seen any of the other Scary Movies, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't seen them or you aren't a horror movie fan, you may be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Cornball Sophmoric Parody.......2007-06-05

I actually founds some parts of this film amusing. I'm a big "war of the world's" fan, so when I saw this film was going to spoof it, I checked it out. Yeah, I'm not a fan of the potty humor (the scene with the old woman getting the sponge bath), or homophobic jokes (Brokeback Mountain parody), some of this film had some amusing bits. Tom on the Winfrey show. The Michael Jackson 'cameo' when the Tripods are attacking, the scene where "Tom" is trying to take the minivan.

Other scenes were just lame. (The beginning Saw scene), The scene in the Village.

I really can't see rating this film any more than 2 stars. It was Trash TV. But some of the scenes were well done, and I thought the actors: particularly the Tom character and his daughter (dead ringer for the kid in the actual movie), did an excellent job.

Recommend this film for adults only. Too much sex and potty humor for the kiddies.

3 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss Comedy, Just Average.......2007-05-28

"Scary Movie" franchise still goes on, with lots of parodies about the recent hit movies such as "War of the Worlds" "SAW" "The Village" and "The Grudge." David Zucker who also helmed the second sequel "Scary Movie 3" throws in lots of gags with his trademark zany humor. He just cannot sit still behind the camera. He is always trying to find something to joke about and the results are hit-and-miss.

Each gag or parody should be seen for yourself. Some are very funny, some unfunny and misguided, and all in all, well, just good. One sad thing for me is that the glorious days of comedies in the 1980s like "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" are gone. Funny as they are, the gags of "Scary Movie 4" still look repetitious and predictable for the fans like me who have seen these classics 20 years ago.

Maybe the filmmakers should have chosen some other materials for parody. The combined story of sci-fi big budget "War of the Worlds" and Japanese horror remake "The Grudge" is not likely to work, so are the occasional flashbacks that are inserted for the sole purpose of introducing another parody of "Million Dollar Baby" and others. Or maybe some jokes are not just funny when a little girl (spoof of Dakota Fanning's screaming girl in "WOTW") is forced to suffer numerous painful experiences repeatedly. Or just maybe, Charlie Sheen (who appears as cameo here) should be in the lead instead of Craig Bierko, who is, I think, miscast as "Tom Ryan."

The film makes fun of at least three internationally famous people - Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, and President of the United States of America (the last one done by Leslie Nielsen). I don't say it's not funny - yes, I laughed, I admit - but the targets are too familiar and the jokes are too obvious. The many cameos (including James Earl Jones, Doctor Phil McGraw and many others) are surely interesting to see, but some originality in the plot or humor would not hurt.

I really like comedies of David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, and lovely Anna Faris who has returned to the film as "Cindy." She shows her comedic talent again, and the film is benefited from its surprisingly good (and costly) production designs and special effects for this genre. What it needs is the laughs up to the standard of the past masterpieces.

3 out of 5 stars Fun movie with a boatload of Special Features on the DVD.......2007-04-04

I've enjoyed the Scary Movie franchise. I know some are sick of it but fot me it's good fun. This time they focused making fun of "Saw", "War of the Worlds", "BrokeBack Mountain", and "Grudge" to name a few.

The gags work some of the time and others they don't. One of my favorites jokes had to be that killer intro mocking "The War of the Worlds" and the whole bit with Tripod. Other jokes aren't as funny because they're jokes that don't leave much surprise. The Tom Cruise bashing in the Oprah show is a riot.

The DVD for the flick is extensive and if you liked the movie is well worth watching. A lot of deleted scenes, bloopers, commentary, and makings on the film. Many of the deleted scenes are alternate or extended scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. The makings on the movie are done well. The cast clearly loves the franchise and hopes it never ends. All in all a decent dvd if you saw the movie but what more than what the theatrical release gave you.

"No one buys gorillas anymore," laments Mr. Peebles in the initial installment ("Big Game") of this Hanna-Barbera animation. The shop owner has looked after Magilla (Allan Melvin, The Brady Bunch) since he was a baby. Customers take the snappily-dressed simian home, he messes everything up--they bring him back. Looks like Peebles (actor/director Howard Morris, The Atom Ant Show) is stuck with the big lug. Granted, little Ogee (Jean Vander Pyl, The Flintstones), who makes her debut in the seventh episode ("Come Blow Your Dough"), would love a pet gorilla, but the redheaded tot is always short of cash.

Magilla first bounded onto the boob tube in 1964. Breaking from the usual pattern, the series premiered in syndication before moving to network TV two year later. Although the gorilla appears in the title cartoon of each episode, the other segments are dedicated to Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-long and Punkin' Puss and Mushmouse. Ricochet (Don Messick, Scooby-Doo) is "the fastest sheriff in the west," Droop-a-long coyote (Mel Blanc, Bugs Bunny) is his foot-dragging deputy, and Punkin' (Melvin) and Mushmouse (Morris) are a hillbilly Tom and Jerry, locked in a rambunctious Hatfield and McCoy-type feud.

This Classic Collection includes 23 episodes plus eight shorts. Throughout, the gorilla is drafted by the army ("Private Magilla"), cast in a movie ("Groovey Movie"), and abducted by aliens ("Planet Zero"). After moving to ABC, the secondary toons would eventually be replaced by Breezly and Sneezly and Peter Potamus and His Magic Flying Balloon, featuring much of the same voice talent. In both cases, the suspender-sporting primate was the top star of the show. As the theme song, introduced in episode 14 ("Motorcycle Magilla"), would have it, "A gorilla like Magilla is nice at any price!" --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

Magilla Gorilla, is a loveable but clumsy gorilla, who lives in Mr. Peebles' Pet Shop. Mr Peebles repeatedly tries to sell or give away the gorilla with no success. Backing segments include Punkin' Puss & Mushmouse and Rocochet Rabbit & Droop-a-long Coyote. These 23 complete cartoons plus 8 bonus Magilla Gorilla classic Hanna Barbera cartoons are now available for the first time ever on DVD!

This is a terrible movie. Frank Marshall (Arachnophobia) demonstrates no control over story, actors, effects, or general presentation in this adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel about an expedition into deep, dark Africa that runs into an unknown race of killer apes. The big monkeys attack and attack and attack and have to be fought off with machine guns and lasers--that's pretty much the story, except there's probably an even better one behind "fourth Ghostbuster" Ernie Hudson's bizarre decision to speak with a British accent. While Marshall wants us to root for the human characters, they're all so obnoxious and unbelievable you can't help but feel lousy for the poor apes when they get chopped to bits just for defending their homes against these twerps. If you're not feeling enough environmentalist ire these days, watch this and get angry. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Not enough Monkey Business!.......2007-02-10

Everybody say CONGO is a film about scientists find killer gorillas in th rain forest. This is true, but before we get to the psycho monkeys, we have to sit trough hostile militants, the Hungry Hungry Hippos in their cruel retirement, and guys who just get this occasional urge to shoot planes out of the sky with seeker rockets that thwarted with flare guns. The killer gorillas show up in the first five minutes to kill Bruce Campbell (dang you monkeys!) and disappear until the last twenty minutes or so. And this film is 110 minutes.

Well, I guess I can't get too angry at CONGO, it at least has decent effect and a few cool action sequences. Those are really the only two good things I can say about this borefest. Stay away unless your a Michael Chritchon completest.

5 out of 5 stars The most underrated comedy of the 90's.......2006-12-11

People may make the mistake when viewing Congo in thinking that they are seeing a suspenseful action flick. On the contrary, it is in fact an unintentional jungle adventure spoof comedy. Ernie Hudson is hilarious and delivers great lines such as "I'm your great white hunter, though I happen to be black." Tim Curry is hilarious as always. The scene where Hudson, Linney and Curry are bribing the warlord is one of the best comedy scenes of the 90's (Seriously, who doesn't find "STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!" funny?) This movie was misrepresented as a thriller but in reality it is Crichton's successful stab at comedy. I give this funny piece of crap 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The myth of the killer ape.......2006-11-17

I really liked this movie and thought it was a great adventure film. In a way it is kind of like the movie Anaconda only with killer gorillas instead of snakes.

Whereas the original Tarzan tells the story of a man raised by gorillas who learns to bring together the human and animal worlds, Tarzan II is a prequel, of sorts, focusing on a chapter from Tarzan's childhood where he realizes he is not an ape and sets out to discover his true identity. The young misfit runs away from his loving mother, Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), and wanders up the Dark Mountain to come face to face with the monstrous Zugor. But all is not serious in this 72-minute boondoggle; there is Disney's usual foray into frivolity by way of a few wisecracking sidekicks--a couple of gorilla brothers named Uto and Kago, and their nettlesome Mama Gunda (voiced by Estelle Harris, a laudable choice). Despite the star-studded voice cast, there is a sense of re-tread ground here, and the story (loosely based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' distinctive tale) shows signs of formulaic Disney. Nonetheless, Phil Collins' trio of original songs livens the pace to make the effort a short-lived smile. (Ages 6 to 14) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Why the midquels, disney??? Why???.......2007-04-19

First off, the animation was very nice. But pretty is as pretty does, right? The story is pretty weak and fairly uninteresting, like most disney DTVs today. It's about Tarzan's boyhood. Like I said, it's not too bad, but it's not very original either.
This is one of disney's first so called "midquels" that later spawned nightmares Bambi 2 and Fox and the Hound 2. I know that some don't feel that way (especially about Bambi 2 apparently), but, if you ever ask those that do like them, the answer is usually that they would have preferred a real sequel. What's with that, eh? Anyway, I'd rent this, there is too much of a chance that you might not like it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Disney sequels.......2007-02-20

I was about to say that Tarzan 2 was the best Dinsey sequel out there but I can't really say that when Toy Story 2 exists. Plus the Alladin sequels weren't that bad either. In Tarzan 2, young Tarzan struggles to in keeping up with the Gorillas. He almost dies and his mother thinks he died. He gets ready to tell her otherwise when he overhears some say the mom is better off now without him. So he sets off on his own to figure out what he is and what species he belongs with. He meets a grumpy old gorilla who scares other creatures off by making them think he's some scary creature. Tarzan promises he won't tell everyone the creature is just an old gorilla if he helps him figure out what he is.

The result is a harmless, cute and charming film that won't make you forget the first one but will still entertain you. Plus it helps that Phil Collins is back doing the songs once again. His songs help enhance the film a lot as well. I think this one could've actually have been released in theatres it was so well done. I mean come on Disney does need to go back to releasing more traditional animated movies in theatres. But they also need to be more original with them. I mean this was good but there's way too many sequels these days. I mean a sequel to the Hunchback of Notre Dame ? What's next Sleeping Beauty 2: The Second Nap ? For one I wouldn't mind seeing them make movies based on their cartoon series. I mean who wouldn't want Gummi Bears to be brought back with a few movies by Disney ? Or how about another Ducktales movie ??

3 out of 5 stars Shall I rank it 2 stars or 3??.......2006-04-14

I watched this movie when about 1 week after it was published. I thought it was good when I first watched it, but now I don't. However, this movie was not very bad, I just don't like it as I used to do.
The story and every plot was funny, and they made me laugh. But by all accounts, it was not a very excellent movie, it was only a comedy. Maybe I was affected by the remarks from many friends, then I watched this movie again, in order to find some defects of this movie. Needless to say, somewhat, I found.
Firstly, the story was not very good except it was funny. It was not like the original, it wasn't touching, none of the plots could make me feel warm or make my eyes wet. And I couldn't find the theme of this movie, sometimes I felt it was a little confused. What worse, sometimes I felt it strayed from the point. But it doesn't matter, maybe there was no point.
Secondly, I thought the tableaux of this movie were colorful, but not very smooth. The best of the tableaux was, at the end of the movie, young Tarzan swang through the jungle, everything on the backdrop was beautiful and natural. However, it's still not good enough.
Finally, I thought the music in this movie was not so good, though I couldn't say it was terrible. I doubted that whether Disney lazed, and Phil Collins did not so good as he used to do. Only "Who Am I" was good after a fashion. And the scores were not as good as the original's.
Generally speaking, this movie was much better than "Tarzan&Jane", but couldn't be compared with "Lady and the Tramp-2: Scamp's Adventure".

Sigourney Weaver more than earned her Oscar nomination for Best Actress in Gorillas in the Mist, dominating every frame of Michael Apted's biopic about primatologist Dian Fossey. Tenderly mothering an orphaned gorilla infant or terrorizing an African poacher with a staged lynching, the statuesque star is never less than fiercely focused, a glamorous warrior for animal rights. As the amateur scientist who researched and spotlighted Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas in National Geographic, Weaver is the passionate heart that keeps an otherwise flaccid film alive--whether bracing anthropologist Louis Leakey to forcibly offer her services as census-taker of the mountain gorillas; or hanging out with the noble animals until she becomes the first person on record to make friendly physical contact with them; or waging sometimes-physical war on natives and Europeans who decimate the gorillas for trophies or zoo fodder. Unfortunately, the film's stodgy script and direction simply document Fossey's magnificent obsession, offering no insight into what lonely impulse of the soul led this extraordinary woman to climb up an African mountain to bond so strongly with gorillas. Cardboard characters include an eternally smiling, sexless African soulmate (John Omirah Miluwi), a perfect boyfriend (Bryan Brown) who has to be dumped in favor of gorilla-love, and stereotypical villains. Still, the African scenery is spectacular, and who can resist the cross-species thrill when the huge dark hand of Digit, Fossey's favorite, first rests in her outstretched palm? Gorillas in the Mist will please those who savor Sigourney Weaver's Amazonian fervor and the pure fire of her physical and spiritual passion--and harbor a slightly misanthropic fondness for liaisons between beauties and beasts. --Kathleen Murphy

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-06-27

My thirteen year old wants to be a zoologist. She watched this movie with her mouth open. A great movie then - a great movie now.

4 out of 5 stars In the mind of a gorilla.......2006-09-23

We must thank the director and salute Sigourney Weaver's beautiful performance: this movie gives us a rare insight into the lives and minds of the gentle, yet ferocious, giant mountains gorillas. It is also the amazing journey of an extroardinary woman who went to live by herself in a remote mountain of Rwanda, secluded from the world. She lost much of her sanity, as well as her life, in the process of saving the lives of a few hundred remaining gorillas. Without her work, who knows who could have saved them from savage murder and total extinction? Thanks to her work and dedication, a "lost cause" had been heard at last.

The struggle for the survival of the "Great Apes" is not totally over though. One must hope that the abject poverty and the political unrest that still affect the region, as well as the illegal poaching and smuggling of goods and animals across borders - that happen with or without government officials' approval in each country involved - and the continuing deforestation and fauna's loss of habitat, can one day all come to an end so that the survival of these amazing creatures can be achieved.

One must recognize the sacrifices and thank people like Diane Fossey, conservationists around the world, and the Rwandese people in particular, who have made it possible so far despite great internal economic and political pressures. All hope is not lost!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful acting by Sigourney Weaver.......2006-08-18

Sometimes you see a movie with such great acting in it, you can never forget it. I can't imagine anyone playing Dian Fossey other than Sigourney; throughout the whole movie, you can feel her rage, her loneliness, her determination. I also think this movie did a good job in not making Dian look like an angel, because as devoted as she was, she had her flaws. Years of isolation in the remote mountains of Africa hardened her. Sometimes I think it would have been better if instead of endlessly fighting with the hunters, she had changed her approach and helped give them job oppurtunities so they had other ways to make money besides hunting. However, despite her flaws, Dian Fossey still deserves to be recognized and remembered for her selfless efforts to protect gorillas. This movie does just that.

5 out of 5 stars Murder in the Mist Solved?.......2006-07-11

After more than 15 years, the mastermind behind the gruesome and infamous murder of renowned gorilla researcher and protector, Dr. Dian Fossey whose life was portrayed in the 1988 movie "Gorillas in the Mist," may finally be in custody in Belgium. Protais Zigiranyirazo, the former Governor of the Ruhengeri province in Rwanda, brother-in-law of the assassinated Rwandan president, and one of the country's most wanted criminals for his creation of "death squads," which killed 800,000 in 1994, was captured by Belgian police while trying to flee Kenya on June 9, 2001.

Dr. Fossey observed the gorillas for 18 years in the Ruhengeri province when she was brutally murdered in her hut on December 27, 1985. Known for her vigilant pursuit of poachers, Dr. Fossey had made many enemies including Zigiranyirazo, who, it was reported, she was about to announce publicly as being behind poaching and smuggling rings of endangered species and gold in and out of Rwanda. Soon after her murder, Rwandan officials arrested one of her trackers for the murder. He then "apparently" committed suicide while in prison, but diplomats in Kigali believe he was secretly hanged before he could talk. Several months later, Wayne McGuire, her American research assistant, was accused by the Government of her murder but escaped capture when the US embassy warned him, enabling him to leave the country.

For years the FBI was unable to approach its prime suspect, Zigiranyirazo, because of his political connections, but that all changed when he was arrested in Belgium for war crimes.

The saga of Dian Fossey's murder may soon be resolved, but her work for the gorillas she fought so hard to preserve still goes on. The following story, reprinted from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, is of Beetsme, one of the original gorillas observed by Dr. Fossey over 25 years ago.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful,Dedicating Movie!!!!!.......2006-02-24

Although I'm labeled "horror buff", I just had to write a review of this film depicting the life of famed Dr. Dian Fossey. Heads up to Warner Brothers for giving us a glimpse into the world of a woman who ultimately gave her life to save and protect the few mountain gorillas remaining in Africa. Dian devoted 18 years of her life to researching and understanding these wonderful primates. This film shows Dian's vunerable side along with her determined side to do what ever it took to save the gorillas who are supposed to be protected by the parks. Sigourney Weaver shines in her role and was the perfect choice for this movie. She approached it with reckless abandon. Although Dian lost her life trying to save the remaining gorillas, we get to see how one person was responsible for doing so much for the gorillas. With heartwarming scenes with her and her beloved Digit, to heartbreaking scenes like when she had to turn over Pucker, the infant gorilla she nursed back to health, to a zoo and the horrible death of Digit, this movie captivates you from beginning to end. For anyone who is interested in the few remaining mountain gorillas, this movie will really open your eyes and make you route for Dian. Although with a tragic ending with Dian's death and burial next to Digit, it's a true love story not only between her and Bob Campbell, but between her and the gorillas she loved so much. I wish I could give this movie more than 5 stars!! Definetly a movie to own and to cherish... for her memory will never be forgotten as her work carries on thru The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International to this day.

Anthony Hopkins is a brilliant actor; Cuba Gooding Jr. is a talented guy with a lot of charm. Both have recently won Oscars (Best Actor for The Silence of the Lambs and Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire, respectively); neither can make Instinct compelling. Hopkins plays a brilliant anthropologist studying gorillas who entered into their world, becoming part of their family, and who killed two park rangers in the gorillas' habitat. Gooding plays a brilliant young psychiatrist who's supposed to evaluate Hopkins and determine whether he's fit to stand trial. Hopkins, along with a number of other psychotics, is being held at a prison, which serves to illustrate the movie's themes about control and freedom. It's not so much that the ideas themselves are hokum--nature versus civilization is always a rich topic--it's that Instinct boils them down to inane sound bites. Psychology is reduced to a game in which the psychiatrist's job is to trick the patient into believing the correct thing or revealing the key that will solve the puzzle. There's not a credible moment in the whole movie, despite the presence of a good cast, including Donald Sutherland (M*A*S*H, Klute, Without Limits, and many, many others) and Maura Tierney (TV's Newsradio). --Bret Fetzer

In a prison for the criminally insane, deranged anthropologist Ethan Powell (Hopkins) is set to be examined by a bright young psychiatrist, Theo Caulder (Gooding). 5 out of 5 stars INSTINCT... WHAT WE ALL SHOULD HAVE.......2007-05-16

Instinct was riveting, exciting, touched with humor, heart wrenching and worth every second! This had to be one of the best performances I have ever seen from Anthony Hopkins; an excellent actor to say the least. Cuba Gooding was fantastic and I'm sure it was a very dramatic role for him as well. I think EVERYONE should see this movie and be touched and angered at the same time by the factualities that exist today. I have recommended this movie to friends and family who have not yet seen it. Respectfully, S. Bluehawk Anderson, Lakota Nation

This is an emotionally gripping film. People who do not care about the environment probably wouldn't be interested in it, however.

    5 out of 5 stars Instinct.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent movie for anyone who is interested in primates. The actors are superb and the subject matter is presented in such a manner that you will want to watch this video many times.

3 out of 5 stars Instinct vs. Ishmael.......2006-12-08

Okay. This movie is loosely based off of Daniel Quinn's book Ishmael. But rather than the actual gorilla sage Ishmael recanting his own analysis of captivity and human (pre)history to an apprentice, it is an obstensibly psychotic old man undergoing therapy of some sort by Cuba Gooding's character.

The book heavily influenced my thinking of ecology and the atrocity of industrial civilization. So the reason I give this film 3 stars is its disregard and lack of justice for the deeper meaning in Ishmael. Also, the additional character, Hopkin's daughter played by the woman from Liar, Liar, irritates me. Sure, the sexual tension between Cuba and her, along with her troubled relationship with her crazy dad, may give the flick some spice, but that's exactly why it annoys me. It's a little cheesy and begins to dominate the story.

For those who have seen or are contemplating preveiwing this movie, I strongly recommend reading the book--especially if you are part of the latter case. I'm not trying to espouse primitivism or spoil anything, but the film's ending and intrigue versus the book's does not stand a fighting chance. Just watch it and you'll probably chuckle a bit at the anticlimactic resolution.

    5 out of 5 stars Instinct.......2006-08-11

This movie is great.Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding JR. work together really well. It has it sad parts and its humories parts.

      Description

This program doesn't just talk with an ape, it carries on an intimate, decades-long dialogue with her. The story documents the incredible development of a gorilla named Koko, whose learning of American Sign Language (and understanding of spoken English) gives new meaning to the ideas of animal intelligence and inter-species communication. Witness an animal who not only expresses wants and needs but also exhibits creativity and complex, human-like emotions. After being told that her pet kitten died in an accident, Koko demonstrates deep and sincere sadness-and seems to express exactly that when left alone that night. Most amazingly, she maintains a deep and enduring friendship with her human teacher and playmate, Dr. Penny Patterson. But will Dr. Patterson's innovative experiment end with Koko? Or will Koko give birth and transmit her knowledge to a new ape generation? Narrated by Martin Sheen, this inspiring, unforgettable program seeks the answers. The Gorilla Foundation - The mission of the Foundation is to bring interspecies communication to the public, in order to save gorillas from extinction, and inspire our children to create a better future for all the great apes. Established in 1976, The Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org promotes the protection, preservation and propagation of gorillas. Project Koko, a primary focus of TGF/Koko.org, involves teaching a modified form of American Sign Language to two lowland gorillas, Koko and Michael. In addition, TGF/Koko.org is developing a unique preserve for gorillas on the island of Maui, Hawaii.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and endearing.......2007-05-12

I really enjoyed this short film about Koko. It was amazing to see what this gorilla can express! It definitely sparked an interest for me to pursue some of the other films about her.

      5 out of 5 stars Koko.......2006-11-10

I showed this to my cultural anthropology class as an introduction to language. They loved it. It gave them a whole different perspective on primate behavior and intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars 500 pound gorilla in the room.......2006-04-15

What a heartbreaker this segment of Nature becomes.

Koko is, of course, the first talking (or signing) gorilla. She was later joined by Michael (who also learned to sign), and they became as brother and sister.

Michael is the dark and silent type. One day, in true Real World fashion, he signs us his dark secret. As a young child, he witnessed the capture and slaughter of his mother for bush meat. He survives the slaughter as a pet, but he is traumatized for life.

This DVD broke my heart twice - once while watching, and then again when I heard the news in April 2000 of Michael's sudden death from heart attack (or, rather, broken heart as we know it must have been). Gets 10 stars in my book - five for Koko and five for Michael.
