Great Movie to share with your preteen children near July 4th.......2007-06-24

This is one of my favorite musicals, which was unavailable on VHS for many years. I remember seeing this movie in Philadelphia during a class trip with my 6th grade class in June 1976, during the bicential celebration. It is a wonderful movie for young and old, a great movie to share with your older children around July 4th so that they can appreciate Independence Day and the struggles of our Founding Fathers to vote for Independence~

History brought to life.......2007-05-30

I am ordering the Director's Cut because the copy I have is VHS. This is my favorite musical and film. I saw the play on Broadway and was thrilled when it was made into a movie, using many of the same actors from Broadway instead of 'movie stars'.

The most stunning thing about the story is that this was living history but a history we were never taught when I was in school in the 1950's and 1960's. As can be seen by President Nixon's request to have something removed, people were still not too willing to face the truths about the Founding Fathers; they were human, they disagreed, they had to compromise and, in the end, they came together (almost) in agreement.

The music....I know every song by heart. Instead of intruding on the story, the music amazingly carries the story forward. I thought then and I still believe that this should be part of the curriculem of American History classes for elementary students.

movie review.......2007-05-26

What a wonderful film.... the music is delightful and so appropriate for the storyline. And it is a great way to reflect on the history of the founding of our country. The time flew by and before you know it, the movie is over. Would recommend this for young and old without hesitation.

The 1776 DVD - Historical and Entertaining.......2007-05-15

I found the video of the musical 1776 excellent. I had seen it before and seen the play on Broadway and it is always a good show. The thing about the musical is it brings to the forefront your knowledge of history and entertains you as well. As I read the Biography of Ben Franklin and John Adams I remember the scenes from the movie it enhances my expirience. I would highly recommend anyone this video if you like history and Musicals.

Of thee I Sing.......2007-04-24

The film adaptation of the Broadway hit, 1776, was an immensely entertaining movie. With the magic of imagination and plenty of melody, movie viewers get to see Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard), John Adams (William Daniels), and Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva) sing and dance. The film hearkens back to the rollicking entertainment movie musicals of the 1950s, but this is not a Rodgers and Hammerstein production, but a blend of historical fact and fiction set to choreography and music.

Director Peter Hunt brings history alive and shows members of the Continental Congress of 1776 attempting to meet a consensus for independence from British rule. Indeed, these men were a partisan group from all walks of life, and one can see that in 1776 there had already existed a disturbing divide between North and South amongst the delegates of each respective state, and the issue of slavery; this may be one of the serious aspects of the film as well as the depiction of the writing of the Declaration of Independence. However, aside from all seriousness, Hunt integrates the humor and the eccentric behavior that was exhibited by each member of the delegation within Independence Hall. This was displayed in scenes with Adams and Jefferson and Franklin choosing what kind of bird should be used as a symbol of the United States, and their ideas ranged from a turkey to an eagle. There is also an interesting and somewhat peculiar scene where Franklin is brought into the building where the delegates are gathered, and two men carry him in a carriage as if he was royalty.

Overall, 1776 was a delight to see in DVD form. The film is pure entertainment and enthusiastically commemorates one of the most monumental events in American history through song and dance.

Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called The Wonders--as in "one-hit wonders." The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record, to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue, to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964--and deserves to be one today. GREAT MOVIE INTERESTING DIRECTOR'S CUT TOO!.......2007-07-03

This is one of the few times that an extended version of a good movie is worth buying. The director's cut is very interesting and makes some scenes much easier to understand. I love the original cut of the film,but it is nice to have both on this 2 disc set. The extra features are cool too! Add a great transfer and you have a worthy ungrade!

Original better than the Director's Cut.......2007-06-27

Since I really like this movie, I enjoyed seeing the scenes that were deleted. Its a good thing they were deleted though, as the movie is much better without them. For instance, I'm glad they took out Tom Hanks' gay boyfriend.

I didn't watch the DVD right away, and when I did, parts of the movie had abnormal/undesirable intensity of color. The people's faces were almost orange in some scenes. Of course by the time I noticed this it was past the 30 days return policy. So I recommend you watch your DVD right away and return it if defective.

If you are a fan of the original, you will love this new Director's Cut. The 30+ minutes of never-seen-before footage makes for a whole new movie experience, rewarding the viewer with a previously not seen insight into the meteoric rise and fall of The Wonders.

That Thing I Love!.......2007-06-20

This movie has all aspects of a Great film. Lots of humor, awesome music and it remains upbeat throughout most of it. I have enjoyed this movie since I was ten years old and it has remained my favorite of all time. The lovely Liv Tyler doesn't hurt it either. Anyone would be lucky to see this classic.

This big budget production features an eclectic score by Wu-Tang Clan co-founder RZA and an A-list vocal cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman. But for all its elaborate production values and over-the-top fights, Afro Samurai suffers from a weakness at its core: Afro is so monosyllabic and cold-blooded, he's not very interesting. His inevitable duel-to-the-death with Justice lacks the emotional punch of Spike's face-off against Vicious in Cowboy Bebop or Kenshin's one-on-one with Shishio in Rurouni Kenshin. Afro Samurai is a moving work of art.
Ive seldom seen such anime with such attitude, gusto whatever you want to call it, packed into two discs. Samuel Jackson is a perfect choice for Ninja Ninja and Afro and the character design, story, and especially the music, can all be summed up in one word. That word is amazing.

the image of his father burned in his mind, just want you to watch and sees what happens. giving the nature of the violence in the cartoon of with everyone seeksing to become the next number 1, you watch to see if afro can do it and avenge his father death. i just love afro don't gvie a f**k attitude when it comes to giving someone their last moments before he kills them. i would recommend this to anyone who like's a cartoon that can give you a story line that can catch your attention like this one.

Great animation and a HUGE Afro!.......2007-06-28

Afro Samurai is a stylish visit to a world at once familiar to fans of anime' and samurai films like Lone Wolf and Cub, while at the same time strikingly original.

Samuel L. Jackson voices the character of the Afro Samurai and his smart mouthed, creepy little "sidekick". This is a world filled with anachronisms: People of all races live in a Japanese-esk/Asian world battling with samurai swords and Naginata as well as flintlocks, six-shooters and RPG's. Afro is number 2, the second best warrior in the world. He is searching for number 1 (voiced by Ron Perlman), the man that killed Afro's father. Number 1 must only worry about fighting number two as number 1 is considered a demigod; however anyone can take a shot and number 2 and pretty much everyone does in this anime' serial.

This film has it all: cool animation, martial arts, revenge hungry samurai, cell phone chatting warrior-monks and an animated Sam Jackson sporting a really big afro.

Afro Samurai is definitely a must see for all fans of anime' in the martial arts genre.

An Animated Cut Above the Rest.......2007-06-28

When you think Afro Sanurai..Think A black Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name...Think a Black version of Lone Wolf and Cub with a mouthy side kick..Think Samurai Jack with an adult theme ..Now know this is one of the best anime animation out there at this time

In this americanized version, Samuel Jackson verbalizes Samurai (when he says anything at all) and his jiving sidekick. Beauty and the Beast and Hellboy's Ron Perlman voices Justice.

This otherworldly tale of a son's revenge for a father's death is so well done.When it ran on Spike TV, Loved it! ..the director cut is 1000 times better than that. I loved this tale of revenge, it reminded me of early Bruce Lee stuff from the 1970's

I do not want to give away the twists of this 5 episode story. Anime fans, action fans and Matial artists alike wont be bored.nor will the general public

If you dont get this, you will miss of something great

Afro Samurai is one of those ideas that doesn't sound promising on paper, but oce it's put to screen, it's so close to glory that you can't help but wonder why you thought it would have been anything different. Originally aired on Spike TV, all five episodes of Afro Samurai are here on DVD in all it's uncut and unedited glory on DVD, as Samuel L. Jackson lends his voice to the revenge driven, title character who as a child witnessed his father being murdered by the insane Justice (Ron "Hellboy" Perlman). Now, Afro works his way up the food chain in an effort to become the "Number One" warrior in all of the world, and get his bloody revenge. What Afro Samurai lacks in it's overall story more than makes up for it in style. The animation is striking and brilliant with incredibly sweeping detail, and the voice cast, which also includes Kelly Hu, Phil LaMar, and a host of voice acting veterans, is superb. The only real downsides to Afro Samurai are with the main character himself. Afro hardly as any kind of character development whatsoever and isn't as sympathetic a character as one might think. Despite that though, Afro Samurai still features a great soundtrack by The RZA, and Jackson also lends his voice to Afro's semi-sidekick Ninja Ninja, who provides some funny moments. All in all, Afro Samurai is a memorable, American-ized anime with a hip-hop flavor, and this violent, uncut version is definitely worth picking up for viewers who wanted more from the TV broadcast and anime fans in general.

Great combat movie........2007-07-01

I've heard it said that combat is long periods of boredom, punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Well, this movie has it in spades.

From what I know of WWII history, this movie is accurate. Beyond that, you spend hours in the confined quarters of desperate men making the best they can of a bad situation.

Naturally, the movie ends on a down note.

Quite a ride. Loved it.

Gripping epic of war at sea.......2007-06-28

This is the model for films about war at sea. The direction and photography are expert: there are very few scenes that look like model work, and you have no trouble believing you are on board the U-boat under the most perilous of conditions. I did think some of the depth charge explosions were too close to be survivable, but I'll accept that as arising from the film's need to get explosions and submarine into the same frame. The crew show a believable and gripping range of characteristics and emotions, including courage, desperation, and ingenuity. These men believe in their country but have little time for ideology. They have a bond that holds them together under the worst of circumstances, and the first-rate acting makes that very real. The ending brings home the cost and futility of war.

I only wish some of these long-winded reviewers would stop trying to be Roger Ebert.

Film is terrific. Must see. Fine writing/direction. Walfgang Petersen is another A-list director, no doubt about it.
The only quibble is this: film is on the looong side. Saw the original version in a theatre way back when it came out--and it was just about right. This version, though, just might leave your poor backside aching after a while.

Definitely worth getting. Might be the BEST submarine film ever made.

THE KING OF ALL SUBMARINE EPICS!!!.......2007-06-03

This is the type of movie that you watch when you are really longing for a submarine movie. This is a well-made and very realistic epic of a real life German U-boat in WW II Be prepared to spend the whole day watching because it is very long but very worthwhile. It is a must see!

Good but theatrics distracts from realism in spots........2007-06-02

The 3.5 hours watching it did not feel long to me, and it was a generally enjoyable production. There was apparently considerable effort at accuracy and realism in portraying the way things were on a U-boot. But, there were some things that distracted me from the realism.

The English subtitles are often not a translation of the German but a representation of what the translator assumed a typical, modern day American would say. It wasn't a big distraction for me, but I think I would have preferred a more literal translation.

A bigger distraction for me was seeing all attempts at realism abandoned to show the U-boat magically surviving depth charges. I kept wondering if this U-boat was made of Star Trek tritanium material.

The biggest disappointment was the ending. I can understand wanting to end with something dramatic, but this was such an obvious gratuitous cheap shot out of left field trying to evoke an emotional response that it impressed me as an insult to reasonable intelligence rather than a dramatic twist. One can look up the history of the U-96.
