These music videos are very artistic and intrinsic. The CD is much better when you have seen the videos. I really like the emotion of the songs that you can understand after watching the movies.

Bjork is truly a genius musically and also visually. She's amazingly fulfilling as an artist. She's a brave and courageous woman (when you see the videos, if you haven't already, you'll know why)who has a very unique vision and is totally uninhibited about presenting it. You have all her videos before Medulla (her latest album) in brilliant sound and image quality. Of course we would love audio commemnts and a documentary about her videos and how she brought them to life, but as an artist who rarely speaks in her live performances she totally communicates to us through her very personnal and astonishing musical and visual universe. You don't need words, just to immerse yourself in abandonement in her work. And that'll be more rewarding than you'll ever know.

Stellar videos get a rather lackluster presentation.......2006-05-22

I can't think of another musical artist that has really explored the potential that video artistry can provide. Other artists may have an even greater output (Madonna, Michael Jackson), but most of their videos don't really lend themselves to viewing multiple times (not to mention their music isn't as interesting either). Even artists that are more interesting musically (i.e. New Order, Depeche Mode) only occassionally put out a really good video. This is about the only video compilation that I'd watch from beginning to end without interruption. Mind you, not everyone will like every video. There's a wide range of styles, from an artificial (Jacque Demy influenced) musical dance number to a cartoon to CGI enhanced sci-fi. I won't go into the details of the individual videos, since many already have. I will, however, comment about my big gripe about this dvd: the quality of the presentation. The sound is actually very good, with stereo for all tracks or the option for 5.1 on those tracks that had originally been mastered in that format (Vespertine era). The big problem for me is that the dvd is mastered for full screen TVs. When you select the "Play all" option, it looks like a VHS tape. Image quality is nowhere where it should be. To add to that more than half of the videos are actually widescreen, so you have the black bars on the screen of your screen & bars (sometimes actually a darkish gray color) across the top, cutting down the resolution significantly (about 1/2 of my screen is wasted by the letterboxing). Because of this, I suspect the DVD was mastered from a VHS tape, though the quality is much better than many such tape transfers, so I can't be sure. The other disappointment is that the menus/extras presentation is rather poor, much more could have been done with this, hence I deducted a star from what should have been a 5 star release.

Cotton Comes To Harlem is a movie produced in the time of Black Exploitation films. Fortunately, this movie doesn't fit the mode. It got a lot of soul and laughter. A very good cast.

Humor at its finest.......2005-12-23

This is the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life. Only Richard Pryor ever made me laugh harder. Rex Reed, the movie critic whose tongue was sharper than a sword, said that you needed to sit through two showing in a theatre so you could hear the lines you missed because people were laughing so hard. He was right.

Electrifying Inner-City Comic Thriller.......2005-02-27

Director Ossie Davis delivers not only a taut police thriller but a film that inserts the concerns of the civil rights movement circa 1970 in a fascinating way. Filmed on actual locations the film just exudes authenticity and atmosphere. For a film that keeps it real I found it interesting that the film's score was composed by Galt McDermott of "Hair" fame(?!). Another minor quibble is that the violence in the film was at times over-the-top. Godfrey Cambridge as Gravedigger Jones and Raymond St. Jacques as Coffin Ed Johnson make an engaging pair. They assume their duty as New York police detectives is to protect their people from predators whether they be black or white even if at times they are at odds with their white captain. Calvin Lockhart is deliciously smarmy as Reverend Deke O'Malley who bilks his congregants out of cash for a bogus back to Africa scheme. Judy Pace is seductively evil as Iris, O'Malley's main squeeze. Redd Foxx is underutilized here as a junk dealer but his character does prove integral to the film's plot.

Don't buy this one unless you're a very stong fan of

It's always good to watch performers like Danny Aiello, Shelley Winters, and Dyan Cannon in an imaginative enterprise...like this movie was supposed to be. Maybe "The Pickle" was to be Paul Mazursky's "Stardust Memories" [Woody Allen's highly personal and decidedly off-beat effort]. All three try to wring life out of an unfocused, one-note script, leaving the viewer with the uncomfortable feeling that the performances are merely drammatic exercises in an acting class.
The premise is interesting: Aiello, the serious director of "art" films can no longer make a buck doing 'em, so he is convinced that in order to keep the home fires burning he must...stretch a bit. Like make a all-out crowd-pleaser with all the trendy, commercial stuff you can think of, with a totally spaced out science fiction backdrop. So the burned out Director reaches into his own psyche for whatever feels right, whatever works. When he was a child he was rewarded with a nice juicy pickle. So a pickle takes on guargantuan proportions and seemingly human intelligence.
One depressing and pointless scene blends into the next.
While the premiere of the film takes place its' embarrassed Director attempts to take his life in a hotel room and Aiello's acting is strong, but again pretentiousness reduces the impact. Little Richard fans note that the Architect makes a second Mazursky appearance - the first being the '86 "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" with a production number of the 1956 recording of "Good Golly, Miss Molly".

Danny ("The Professional," "Jacob's Ladder") Aiello plays a once-respected director who whores himself out to do a big budget sci-fi action flick, hysterically rolling-out his anxieties, fears, and mid-life neuroses on the eve of the film's premiere. Shelly ("The Poseidon Adventure") Winters is Aiello's tough, no-nonsense mum, and the movie-in-a-movie is actually pretty cool, featuring Ally Sheedy, Griffin Dunne, and Little Richard as the president of an alien world, whose inhabitants eat only beef. "More pickle juice!"
