I Would Have Asked Her Out.......2005-10-08
I've been watching reruns of this show on SAFE TV, Channel 9711 on the Sky Angel satellite system, Wednesdays at 11:00 AM. The show was originally broadcast on TV before I was born. When I first watched it I thought it was corny, but it grows on you. It really is quite charming and entertaining. And if I had been a teenager then, I certainly would have asked Corliss out! (Sorry, Dexter). She seems like a lot of fun.
It's great that they are putting this show on DVD. Now I can see it unedited without commercials, which sometimes lop off parts of the show. Let's hope they make all of the episodes available.
One other thing: you know how in Hillary Duff's "Lizzy McGuire" they often switch from live action to cartoon commentary? Well, "Meet Corliss Archer" did something very similar fifty years before!
bright and bubbly sitcom.......2005-08-10
4 episodes from the long-forgotten 1950s sitcom MEET CORLISS ARCHER starring Ann Baker in the title role. Includes:
"A Date for Doris" - Corliss and Dexter set out to find a date for lonely Doris, with disastrous results.
"Corliss the Cheerleader" - Corliss tries out for the cheerleading squad, leaving Dexter out in the cold and extremely jealous that Corliss is spending all her time with the cheerleading captain.
"The Vase That Came to Dinner" - Janet buys an expensive-yet ugly vase, which stirs up trouble in the Archer household.
"Friends Forever" - After their friends cancel a party-date, the Archers feel they are being snubbed, but only Dexter knows the real story.
Simple homely domestic comedy. Ann Baker is pert and appealing in the lead role of Corliss. Bobby Ellis plays the ever-faithful boyfriend Dexter with Mary Brian and John Eldredge as her parents.
Lets hope Alpha releases some more eps from this charming show.
Rare 1950s comedy on DVD.......2005-02-17
Here's an entertaining family sitcom from the 1954-55 television season starring Ann Baker as Corliss Archer. It's the story of the Archer family and Corliss' boyfriend Dexter and their many amusing misadventures. It reminds me of other family centered comedies like "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" or "The Donna Reed Show." The show was syndicated by ZIV Television and had a total of 39 episodes. Ann Baker's television and screen credits were fairly minimal and this series was the peak of her relatively short career.
The prints utilized by Alpha Video for this release are very good and relatively defect free for this 50 year old show; to the best of my knowledge, this is the show's only DVD release. "Meet Corliss Archer" is certainly not the classic that "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" is, but it is entertaining enough on its own terms and is recommended primarily to those who enjoy television comedies from the 1950s.

more "Corliss" classics with Ann Baker.......2005-08-11
4 episodes from the long-forgotten 1950s sitcom MEET CORLISS ARCHER starring Ann Baker in the title role. Includes:
"The Algebra Problem" - Corliss, Dexter and their parents all spend a fretful night trying to work out a tricky homework question.
"Quaranteened" - Corliss comes down with the measles and Mr Archer has to deal with Dexter, whose been quaranteened in the Archer house for a week.
"No Clothes for the Party" - Corliss and Dexter need to borrow some clothes for the big Saturday dance but neither is brave enough to ask their parents.
"The Best Policy" - Corliss' relationship with Dexter hits a sour note when she takes onboard some comments from her mother.
Simple homely domestic comedy. Ann Baker is pert and appealing in the lead role of Corliss. Bobby Ellis plays the ever-faithful Dexter with Mary Brian and John Eldredge as her parents. Lets hope Alpha releases some more eps from this charming show.
More Corliss = More Laughs!.......2005-06-20
"Meet Corliss Archer" is certainly no television classic, but rather it's a reminder of the wholesome and gentle family comedies that were broadcast during the 1950s and 1960s. The series ran for 39 episodes during the 1954-55 season, and that relatively short run means that it probably will not be seen on broadcast or cable television anytime soon. Fortunately, Alpha Video has released this second volume containing four episodes to join volume one, which also contained four episodes, so owners of these DVDs can create their own mini-marathon of Corliss Archer episodes.
Ann Baker is a delight as Corliss, but it's John Eldredge (as Corliss' father Harry) and Bobby Ellis (as Corliss' boyfriend Dexter) who provide most of the laughs. The prints used for this release aren't restored, but they're watchable and the audio is fine for a 50 year old series.
"Meet Corliss Archer" is recommended to fans of vintage television comedies, as well as to those who prefer an alternative to the cynicism and vulgarities found in many of today's "family" sitcoms. I have a slight preference for the episode selections in volume one, so my rating for volume two is actually closer to *** & 1/2.
